The Chicken Coop Kitchen & Bar Now open in Johnston, perfect for just about any occasion by Jennifer Coates The sign on the bar says it all to those who enter: “Come in, we are Awesome!” For Tonya Antonelli and Meliza Ferruolo, the coowners of The Chicken Coop Kitchen & Bar, this catchy phrase says everything - this place is awesome, and all are truly welcome! A focus on great service and good oldfashioned hospitality at this new restaurant in Johnston is not by accident, it is, in fact, quite intentional. Meliza and Tonya, who are linked by their partners, brothers Robert Ferruolo (who is married to Meliza) and Mathew Ferruolo (Tonya’s fiancé) care deeply about the dining experience that their customers have at The Chicken Coop. This begins with the kind of friendly hospitality that they expect their servers and bartenders to deliver ~ along with the delicious food they serve up every day at this casual kitchen and bar in the city. Rhode Islanders Ferruolo and Antonelli are not only the co-owners of The Chicken Coop Kitchen & Bar, they are also good friends. When the former take-out restaurant Wings-to-Go closed, Tonya, who has been in the industry for over twenty-seven years, jumped at the chance to go out on her own. Along with Meliza, these two women put their heads together and set in motion a plan to convert a tired and empty space into the cozy, welcoming dine-in restaurant it is today. The lease to The Coop was signed on September 5th and with the guidance and design inspiration of Tonya and Meliza, the Ferruolo brothers went right to work. With their 30+ years of combined experience in commercial and residential construction, these hardworking guys completed renovations that went from floor to ceiling, rafter to rafter, and front to back. was left undone. The restaurant was officially opened to the public on November 19th, in record time. What was once an overly bold-colored space had been expanded, lightened, brightened, and modernized. Today, a soft blue-gray paint coats the wainscoting while the remaining wall space is covered with whitewashed brick. The tabletops are butcher block and the bar has a dark, polished granite countertop which anchors the whole room. The restaurant is divided into a dining area and a lounge area where diners can relax while they munch on appetizers or just cozy up with a cocktail while they watch the Patriots play on one of the many TV’s in the room. The light of a neon sign - a gift from Meliza to
her husband Robert (who is a huge fan of Tom Cruise’s film 1988 movie “Cocktail”) shines down on black leather couches making this part of The Chicken Coop feel just like home. Today, the restaurant would be called classic “modern farmhouse,” it is “country” in design, but not kitchy! While the décor at The Chicken Cook Kitchen & Bar is “on trend,” what makes this newly opened dinery most notable is its delicious and carefully selected menu. Some might call it “pub-style” fare, but it is certainly more elevated than that moniker implies. The menu was curated by Chef Justin Ferreira, a young and talented chef who certainly knows his way around the kitchen. Though a local guy, Chef Ferreira has been cooking up a storm in restaurants across the country for over 15 years. Hailing from Fall River, his work has taken him to as far away as California where he cooked in the kitchen of a 5-star restaurant. He is innovative and yet consistent, knowing that it is his signature flavors and dishes that have garnered him fans from one coast to another. The menu at The Chicken Coop Kitchen & Bar is straightforward and enticing, from its classic pub-style cuisine to its famous chicken wings! Peruse your way through this mouthwatering selection of appetizers: House-made chili (perfect for a chilly winter day), crunchy Mozzarella sticks & onion rings, Steak & Cheese Eggrolls, House-made FRIED pickles and potato chips (nothing like them off any grocery store shelf), Fried Cheese Curds, the best dang French Fries around (too good to describe, but don’t miss them) and Nachos (piled high with cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno, and more) If this doesn’t tempt you, how about their crispy, fresh salads or their succulent burgers! Workforce Woes What Can We Do?
With 2021 behind us and a fresh start ahead, workforce woes are still among the most pressing issues affecting the hospitality industry going into 2022. From hiring to retention, and from performance to reliability and more, workforce concerns continue to limit our industry’s economic recovery, negatively impact consumer confidence, and put our already struggling businesses at a competitive disadvantage. So, what’s next? What will our industry do if it is unable to strengthen its workforce in the coming months? The reality is, if our restaurants, hotels, and industry businesses cannot attract and retain enough qualified staff to support operations, doors will close, and many more jobs will be lost. While this is a scenario which in my opinion should be avoided at all costs, industry operators have shown that adaptation is possible and that there are ways to compensate for a lack of adequate staffing. If you have been out to eat, or if you have stayed in a hotel recently, you may have noticed that things are being done differently. Where possible, many businesses are substituting technology for people. At restaurants with functional online ordering and reservation systems, one host or hostess can do the job of two with the assistance of computerized scheduling programs that streamline efficiency. At hotels in smaller markets, there is no

While we certainly do not want to see jobs eliminated due to the implementation of technology-based solutions, these advancements are often more cost-effective and provide more value to the consumer. With costs down and consumer satisfaction up, businesses are likely to produce higher revenue which actually does more to stabilize the workforce than the act of filling obsolete or unnecessary positions. Industry operators are also scaling back their services and offerings to compensate for inadequate staffing. Restaurant menus are being cut down to place a greater emphasis on “crowd-pleasers,” and expensive ingredients are being swapped out for cost-effective substitutes. At hotels, amenities are being pared down and reconfigured to bring more value to the customer while limiting the costs to offer those services, and oftentimes that leads to reduced hours of operation, limited staffing, and the implementation of appointment-only accommodations. While crunching numbers is helpful, and embracing technological trends allows our industry to keep up with the times, these solutions are really just putting lipstick on the problem and do not account for the positive impact a strong workforce has on our industry. People look forward to interacting with their favorite bartender, and they remember fondly the times that room service stocked and straightened their hotel rooms without having to ask. Good workers bring good customers to good businesses, which is GOOD for the industry! If our true goal is to bolster our workforce, a greater emphasis should be placed upon training workers for success, and improving the benefits and opportunities that not only attract workers to our unique industry, but also incentivize them to stay. Every one of our industry’s workers provides a great deal of value, from dishwashers to valet drivers, and from bussers to managers. It’s our responsibility to provide that same level of value in return. I recently researched top ten foods not to eat and top ten foods you should eat. Here’s what I came up with and why. I will start with the “shouldn’t eat.” Number one, Marie Callender’s Large Size Chicken Pot Pie. Most people hear “chicken” and assume it’s good for you. Not this one. It’s loaded with saturated fat, calories, and sodium. Stay away. Number two, Five Guys Burgers. I was surprised at this one. I was thinking that they must use better meat than the other fast food places. I was wrong. Their burgers are loaded with fat. They’re burgers make McDonald’s Big Mac seem healthy. Stay away. Number three, Cambell’s Chicken Soup. Again, a little surprised, but I know there is a lot of sodium in anything canned. It doesn’t get any worse than this one. Number four, Chipotle’s Chicken Burrito. Again chicken. This has the most sodium and calories I have ever seen. You can eat six Taco Bell’s chicken soft tacos and still have half the calories and sodium of this item. Stay away. Number five, Cheesecake Factory’s Chocolate Tower Truffle Cake. Forget the calories and saturated fat. The grams of sugar in this cake add up to a three day supply of sugar intake in one slice. Stay away. Number six, Uno Pizzeria and Grill’s Chicago Classic Deep Dish Pizza. You can have three of Pizza Hut’s Pepperoni Lover’s Personal Pan Pizzas to one of these. It’s loaded with sodium, fat, and calories. Number seven, Olive Garden’s Tour of Italy. It should be named “triple bypass.” Lasagna, Chicken Parmigiana, and Fettuccine Alfredo. Too un-

healthy for anyone. Stay away. Number eight, a Starbucks product. They call it “Starbucks on steroids.” White Chocolate Mocha. Even if you order this with 2% or nonfat milk, it has as many calories, ready, as a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with cheese! Who would have thought a coffee drink would be that unhealthy. Stay away. Number nine, Ben & Jerry’s Extreme Ice Cream. This was not so much of a surprise. There is so much sugar added to your fat cells and into your artery walls and that’s only with one serving. By the way, Haagen Dazs is no better. Stay away. Number ten, McDonald’s, but not food, rather its Shakedown. A 22 oz cup has 19 teaspoons of sugar, added sugar, and 13 grams of saturated fat. Granted, that’s a large, but a small has just as many calories as a Big Mac. Stay away. Here are the “should eat.” Number one, sweet potato. This is an excellent source of carotenoids, potassium, and fiber. Add olive oil, cinnamon, or chili powder and enjoy. Number two, mangos. One cup of mangos provides about two-thirds a day’s supply of vitamin C, 10% of vitamin A, fiber, and a dose of blood pressure-lowering potassium. Number three, Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt has twice the protein of ordinary yogurt. Greek yogurt is also strained so it is very thick and creamy. Add fruit, nuts, or granola and enjoy. Number four, broccoli. One of my favorite foods. Raw, broiled, frozen, steamed, baked, it doesn’t matter. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C, vita-
min K, carotenoids and folate. Add olive oil, roast with onion until brown, delicious! Number five, garbanzo beans. All beans are loaded with protein, fiber, copper, folate, iron magnesium, potassium, and zinc, but garbanzo beans or chickpeas, as most know them as, are so versatile. You can add these to salad, make hummus, add to stew or soup, etc. Delicious and healthy. Number six, leafy greens. No surprise, right? Kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collards, etc. are all loaded with vitamins. You will get your vitamin A, C, and K, along with folate, potassium, iron, fiber, and magnesium. Add salad dressing or oil & vinegar and enjoy. Number seven, wild salmon. Another of my favorites. Low in calories and high in potassium, vitamin C and A, and lycopene. So healthy! Number eight, watermelon. This is a nutritional winner. Loaded with vitamins and basically all water. No calories. No guilt. Just yummy. Number nine, oatmeal. Yes, quick, old fashioned oatmeal. Just a half cup has four grams of fiber and will help lower cholesterol. Add bananas, almonds, or diced apples instead of sugar and kick start your day. Number ten, butternut squash. Butternut Squash is loaded with fiber, vitamin A and C, and what’s really great is that it’s filling. You won’t feel hungry after eating some butternut squash.

THE TIME CAPSULE
The Time Capsule has two retail locations that sell comic books, toys, records, movies, video games, and all sorts of collectibles. Rob Yeremian tells his story of how he started collecting comic books as a young kid, to owning two stores, and was once in the top 50 sellers on eBay.
“Everyone wants to relive their youth and that’s what really fuels a lot of people to want to collect. When people come into my store and find comics from the past and old toys and records, it’s exciting and fun.” By L.A. Reilly I really wanted to interview a record store for my next article. I googled records stores in RI and The Time Capsule came up as one of the most popular stores. After reading about Rob Yeremian’s store, I discovered it was much more than just a record store. Along with records, he sells new and old comics, records, classic VHS tapes, gaming consoles, and vintage toys. Definitely a trip down memory lane that can easily put a smile on someone’s face, remembering the fun times of your childhood. “I’ve always been a collector of comic books, starting as a young kid, and by the time I was 15, I started developing more expensive tastes so I started selling off the ones I had to raise money to buy older, more expensive stuff,” Rob said. It then turned into a business. He started at age 15, setting up at comic conventions. The promoters at the conventions were so impressed that a 15 year old kid wanted to set up that they gave him a table right by the front door. “What happened was someone walked through the door with a big bag full of comics, and since I had the first table, he asked me if I wanted to buy them. I was looking for older, more expensive comics, myself. I
looked through the bag and bought them, realizing I could make a profit.” Rob started thinking about buying comics and reselling them so he could buy the comics he really wanted. Before graduating from URI with a degree in Economics in ‘93, he opened his first store selling comics and toys called “Time Capsule Comics,” in Warwick. In 1998, Rob decided to liquidate and sold what he had left to one of his customers. He decided to go to Los Angeles where he attempted to sell comics & collectibles on the West Coast. He ran into two problems. One was the cost of living and second he came to realize that in New England, people had attics and basements where they stored old stuff. People saved things. Out in LA, most houses didn’t have attics or basements so people didn’t save stuff. After 7 months, he came back to RI. Back in late 1998, he joined eBay and it changed the whole game for Rob. After he came back he had no inventory and had to start over. He pieced together enough money to open a store in Warwick. When he came back to RI, someone had taken his “Time Capsule” name. So he opened as “Recycled Memories.” He spent the next 5-6 months building his inventory back up and selling on eBay. He sold comics and VHS tapes that hadn’t been released Shop ShopIn InRI RI41 41

on DVD. They became collectibles. The store in Warwick had a storefront where people could come and shop, but it was more of a base of operations for his eBay business. His good friend Anthony Balasco owned an online wrestling superstore which was one of the biggest mail ordering wrestling companies in the world. He originally started the The Time Capsule Comics store with Rob. Around 1999 at “Recycled Memories,” Anthony gave Rob all his non-wrestling inventory to merge with Rob’s inventory and use of his old warehouse to set up in. “It was a great deal for me because his inventory was huge and we were good partners. “It was a good match,” Rob said. So he closed down his store and did internet sales only until 2002. At one time, they were in the top 50 sellers on eBay. Eventually Rob went off on his own again and opened “The Time Capsule” in Cranston, in 2003. After about 5 years, he was confident about the business so he bought the building. Record selling started by complete accident. “When I had the eBay business, I bought out the estate of the guy who owned Strawberry Records in downtown Providence. I bought all his comics and toys, but he also had tons of records,” Rob explained. He put the records out to help fill up his new store, and he wasn’t sure how much to sell them for. He was selling them for $3 a piece. Collectors were coming down buying them all up. “I had no idea what to sell them for. I was a comic book guy,” he said. One of his customers told him he had some valuable vinyl and they were worth more than he was selling them for. “I realized that this was a thriving subculture. I basically spent the next 10 years studying vinyl and really learning vinyl,” he continued. He went to people’s garages that were getting rid of vinyl. Someone had 10,000 records sitting in their garage that they wanted to get rid of. He bought them. He went to one estate sale that had 100,000

albums. He bought those too. Rob’s favorite is Pink Floyd. He had a gigantic Dark Side of the Moon cassette custom made. It’s the only one in the world that size and it’s sitting in the window of his store. Rob buys and sells. “If people have a large enough collection I will make a house call. I do about 3-4 a week. I’ve been doing this for about 35 years and I’ve sold a lot of stuff in my store and on eBay. I have a general idea of what things are worth and also the cost of doing business,” he said. Hot items change as the years go on. Collectors’ tastes change,” he added. “Everyone wants to relive their youth and that’s what really fuels a lot of people to collect. By the time you get to your 30s and 40s, most people have a little disposable income to start collecting. It’s a 20 year rule for what people want. I started in ’87 and people wanted things from the ‘60s and ‘70s. I used to be able to sell the Three Stooges and Shirley Temple items. Now you can’t give that stuff away. Now they want Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters. They want the things of their youth,” he explained. When I asked Rob what the most popular items were, he replied, “For comic books: ‘Amazing Spider Man’; Records: Pink Floyd, Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix; and Video Games: Classic Nintendo.” I wanted to know what Rob’s “Holy Grail” was. It’s a comic that he bought 5 years ago. “Zap Comix” issue #1 by Robert Crumb. His personal collection focuses around underground comics of the ‘60s and’ 70s. He’s always enjoyed reading those. “One thing we never have enough inventory of is Godzilla toys. We can’t seem to get our hands on enough Godzilla stuff to satisfy the demand,” he stated.

Video Games What’s in store for the future for Rob? “I ask myself that all the time. I would certainly like to open up another store, but I feel like I wouldn’t be able to stock it like I want to. I’ve road tripped around this country multiple times and 70% of the stores that are out there are all identical. They have brand new comics and aisles of collected editions, and a couple sections of hot toys. That’s what most of the comic book stores out there are like. They might be profitable, but they aren’t fun. When people come into my store and find comics from the ‘60s and ‘70s, or they find old toys and records, it’s exciting and it’s fun for people to experience the past. Most of the comic stores around the country focus on new products. They are “mini Walmarts.” It’s a lot more work to do what I do, dealing with vintage stuff,” he explained. When he first opened, the eBay sales were probably 70% of his overall sales. Today, it’s 50/50. Half the sales are from his store and half from eBay. “Most hobby shops are usually owner-operated and it takes a lot to do both. I am very ambitious and at the end of the day, I’m making a living and I’m happy. That’s all that really matters. Every day I can’t wait to get out of bed and see what the day brings. For me, buying collections is the best part of the business. Over half the collections I buy come from recommendations from people who I have already bought items from. It pays to be fair with people . I’m having a good time for sure! I get to be around people I like and buy and sell things that I enjoy,” he said with gusto. Time Capsule has two locations:

Combatting Inflation Threats in Retirement By Edward Pontarelli Jr.
Today it’s common for Americans to spend two, three or even four decades in retirement. This means people have ample time to relax and achieve a bucket list of dreams. However, the flip side is that retirees need to ensure they have enough savings to last through their lifetime. One complicating factor is that inflation is a fact of life, and it can result in meaningfully higher expenses over time. As you’ve likely seen in recent headlines, inflation rates are the highest they’ve been in many years. Living costs have risen 5% over the past 12 months ending in June, based on the Consumer Price Index 1 – significantly higher than the 1-2% annual increases we’ve gotten used to seeing over the past decade. Inflation creates challenges for all consumers, but it can be particularly difficult for those who are retired and living on a limited income. Higher inflation can throw off the assumptions for regular expenses reflected in your retirement plan. It’s unknown whether this uptick in living costs will persist, but you should prepare for the impacts of inflation regardless. Here are a few things to know and do:
Keep it in perspective Today’s inflation rate of 5% is high by recent standards, but nowhere near a record. We may be a long way from seeing an extended period of high inflation like we had in the 1970s and 1980s, where inflation in the United States peaked at 13.5%. Since 1982, inflation has only been higher than 5% in one calendar year (1991) until now.2 While another decade-long inflation threat is unlikely, living costs in the near-term may continue to rise at a fast pace.
Revisit your expenses If the cost of essential items, such as food, gas, plus the cost of discretionary expenses, such as travel, are busting your budget, you may need to explore ways to cut back. Can you buy food in bulk to save money? Should you reduce your casual driving to cut down on gas? Are there other discretionary expenses you can forego, at least for now? Addressing these questions today could prevent you from spending down your assets too quickly.
Adjust your investments Is your portfolio properly positioned to keep pace with inflation? It may make sense to keep a portion of your assets invested in stocks. Over the past 30 years, the Standard & Poor’s 500, a benchmark of U.S. large cap stock market performance, gained, on average, more than 10% annually3, well above the 2.3% average annual inflation rate over that same period.4 Earning higher returns on money you may need 10 to 20 years in the future should help it grow sufficiently to meet inflated income needs at that time, but a large portion of your portfolio should still be invested more conservatively to protect it from market volatility. Look at other options to improve your position If you are experiencing financial strains as living costs rise, you may want to consider other options, such as a part-time job or consulting. Even in retirement, it is important to be flexible to react to changing circumstances that may affect even your best-laid plans. Redoing a Ceiling - Better To Go Over Existing or To Start from My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting(www.LopcoContracting. com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! There are a number of reasons why someone may want to replace a ceiling. Perhaps their existing ceiling has some type of texture to it that is overly annoying to them. Maybe they have a large section of the ceiling that is damaged (think – someone falling through a ceiling while putzing around in the attic).Or they may have an old calcimine ceiling that gives them a fit every time they go to try to fix some peeling paint on it and the paint seems to keep peeling and peeling and peeling and peeling…no matter how thoroughly they prep the ceiling before painting it. Whatever the reasoning, once the decision has been made that the ceiling needs to be redone, there are two different ways of doing so. One method is to go over the existing ceiling with a new ceiling. In the Northeast, where blueboard and plaster – particularly in residential settings – is king, the general approach would be to hang new 3/8” blueboard over the existing ceiling and then plaster over the blueboard to whichever finish one desires (smooth, swirl, textured, etc.) over it. If there is crown molding that surrounds the room, a ceiling fan, certain types of light fixtures, or the like, they may have to be very carefully removed prior to the ceiling being hung and then properly re-installed (or have an updated version installed) after the ceiling has been completed. The other method is starting from scratch. This method entails, literally, taking down the existing ceiling in its entirety, hanging a new ceiling - again, assuming the Northeast typical residential construction approach - in this instance with ½” blueboard and then plastering over the blueboard to whichever finish one desires (smooth, swirl, textured, etc.) over it. In both methodologies, one can certainly substitute sheetrock (vs. the blueboard) and its accompanying process of taping the seams and joint compounding the seams and screw holes and the entire process that is involved with this particular procedure. Most often, however, in this part of the country, blueboard and plaster is what is utilized for this type of project the majority of the time. If there is an existing “bow”, even a slight one, with the existing ceiling, if going over the ceiling with a new ceiling, the bow will most likely NOT disappear as the new ceiling will simply follow the contour of the old ceiling once the new ceiling is hung over it (whereas taking down the ceiling in its entirety clearly provides an opportunity to possibly correct what may be causing the bow behind the ceiling). With this all being said, which angle is “better”? 58 Shop In RI
As with many things, there are pros and cons to each. The biggest con with hanging a new ceiling over the existing ceiling is one will lose about a ½” of ceiling height (which for some folks is a big deal, for others not so much). The biggest con with demoing an existing ceiling when replacing it, is the demo process can be a bit more cumbersome and messier (as well as costly if you are hiring someone to do this for you) than simply going over the existing ceiling (even when taking into account any crown molding or fixtures that might have to come down and go back up with the process involving going over the existing ceiling). The biggest pro of hanging a new ceiling over the existing ceiling is it is a bit easier than having to trudge through the messiness involved in taking down a ceiling in its entirety.The biggest pro in completely removing a ceiling is that no ceiling height is lost. With me, the optimum choice is truly situational. While some folks may be more strongly opinionated than others on this topic, I believe there are some times when going over the existing ceiling makes more sense and there are other times when taking down the ceiling in its entirety and starting all over again might be the better way to go. Out with the old, tired and dated materials, and in with new, fresh and colorful ideas. Because federal and state governments invested billions of dollars into infrastructure and keeping people from losing their homes, many took the funds to spruce up their homes. Projects often ranged from clearing out debris or a paint job on the outside to replacing furniture and rugs inside. Also, a possibility would be changing one’s curtains to give the appearance better appeal. That’s why the folks at American Blinds Wholesale Outlet in North Providence prides itself on not only offering the widest selection of blinds in the area, but also exceptional customer service. Owner Francis Clark said that the latter is the foundation of their company. For several decades, the staff has made blinds their mission and have succeeded by forging their own path to success. “When you contact us, you will speak with an actual person instead of an automated operator. Clark, who graduated from Bryant with a business degree, went into the industry because “it was something different” from the financial and other similar disciplines that recruited him. From there, he worked at Manufacturing Blinds in the mid 1990s. He purchased that company from the prior owner and set out on his professional journey. One aspect about American Blinds’ services that sets him apart was selling directly to the customers instead of through retail made a big difference. Since he did not go that route, that translates into passing on the savings to their customers. Also helping was Clark’s ability to create quality products based on his own experience.
Another winning move was securing a tractor trailer to make weekly trips from their manufacturing plant in Philadelphia to Rhode Island. That move cut the turnaround time for orders to roughly three to four weeks instead of a minimum of several months. Clark understands how important the truck has been during the last year. “There have been so many issues with the lack of drivers and the supply chain constantly breaking down,” said Clark. “Having our own trailer at our disposal has enabled our customers to get their orders in a timely fashion and without too many hands touching the items.” They don’t use shipping companies, couriers, or other methods because that provides more opportunities for breakage. The truck leaves Philly and arrives in North Providence, where the employees directly unload the trailer. Fewer people handling the merchandise means fewer accidents. People often have ideas on what they would like for blinds. However, they may lack the technical expertise to handle such a project. Clark understands. “Most people are not blind experts; we are. We can come in and make recommendations, do the measurements, and provide installation at no additional charge. If a blind gets damaged, we also have a dedicated service technician who will come to the residence and repair the blind. That’s different from other places that will simply sell you a new blind. We are all about customer service we give because we would love for them to become repeat customers,” he said. Their materials are top shelf. They won’t use subpar or flimsy materials that other well-known outlets may use and pass off as quality materials. Since many people don’t know or understand the difference, those facilities can pawn off their blinds. They may not have the knowledge of whether the blind is worth investing in or going to be replaced in short order. Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an Icon with a Profoundly Impactful Message
By Julia Romano Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in 2022 will be observed on Monday, January 17th, a special day that marks an annual federal United States holiday, with its government offices and most businesses closed. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed Martin Luther King, Jr. Day into law, and three years later, it was first celebrated. By the year 2000, all fifty states officially observed the day. Martin Luther King, Jr., son of Michael King, Sr. and Alberta Christine was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929. As a highly effective social activist, he was the leader of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and made a huge impact on its progress until his death on April 4th, 1968. Dr. King is especially remembered for his nonviolent protests against segregation and his “I have a Dream” speech. This quintessential speech was important in a number of ways as it brought even greater attention to the civil rights movement, which had been going on for many years. Following this speech, the name Martin Luther King was a household name throughout the nation. The speech was instrumental in Congress moving faster passing the Civil Rights Act. In 1955, King became one of the prominent leaders for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. For 381 days, King and his followers boycotted the bus system that allowed segregation on public buses. Dr. King’s primary goals were to abolish racial discrimination in many areas including public transportation, employment, and with voting rights. Dr. King also opened doors to education and employment that had long been closed to Black America. His speeches are renowned and 70 Shop In RI
some of the most iconic of the 20th century, having a profound effect on the national awareness of racism and the civil rights movement. In regards to his education, as a result of being such a gifted student, King was able to bypass grades nine and twelve, prior to enrolling in 1944 at Morehouse College, the alma mater of his father and maternal grandfather. Although he was the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, it was not King’s intention to follow the family profession until Morehouse President Benjamin E. Mays, a noted theologian, convinced him to change his mind. King was ordained before graduating college with a degree in sociology. After earning a divinity degree from Pennsylvania’s Crozer Theological Seminary, King attended graduate school at Boston University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1955. The title of his dissertation was “A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.” Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was not his first at the Lincoln Memorial. Six years before his iconic oration at the March on Washington, King was among the civil rights leaders who spoke in the shadow of the Great Emancipator during the Prayer Pilgrimage for

Before a crowd estimated at between 15,000 and 30,000, King delivered his first national address on the topic of voting rights. Dr. King made an effort to have people on his side as he fought. He appealed to the masses of the public with his message, one that was so effective, his speeches are quoted to this day. He used the law, the courts, and people to peacefully march towards equality.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a phenomenal leader and possessed outstanding traits including intelligence, self-confidence, and determination. He also won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to fight racial inequality in a non-violent manner.
An inspirational person of character, Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream to change the world, and he transcended racial barriers to improve American society in a profound way. One of the greatest qualities he possessed was extreme patience, an invaluable virtue which helped him spread his remarkably meaningful message across America.

By: Brian Lowney The Cape Verdean Museum is an important asset to our community, state, and region, and is dedicated to celebrating the fascinating history and rich culture of Cape Verde and CapeVerdean-Americans. According to Joseph DaMoura, president of the organization, the institution, which is the first of its kind in the nation, was founded in 2000, by a small group of dedicated volunteers who represented Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The museum opened in East Providence in 2005, and will expand next year to a new facility in Pawtucket next year. In 2000, 50 families pledged $1,000 each to successfully launch the museum, which continues to flourish and expand. “We are a 501(3)(c) institution, defined as a non-profit organization, created and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes,” begins DaMoura, noting that the organization’s staff are all volunteers who are committed to the museum’s important goals.

One of the museum’s most fascinating exhibits is the section devoted to the migration of people from Cape Verde and the Azores to the United States as whalers and seasonal cranberry harvesters, as well as packet ship passengers settling in Fox Point in Providence, New Bedford and other ports along the coast. “We celebrate the contributions these families made, whether it’s as whalers, stone masons and longshoremen, or other professions that contribute to our society,” Gonsalves notes. DaMoura shares that in 2020, the Cape Verdean Museum launched a fundraising campaign for a new museum in Pawtucket. The new home will allow the museum to display more of the collection, expand the research and library area, host larger school visits, and devote space to special exhibits, gallery shows, and other events for the public to enjoy. “We are grateful for the support received during the last 20 years and we want to keep that momentum going by moving into a new home that allows to truly showcase our collection and host special events, thus raising the visibility of Cape Verdean heritage and developing the museum into a Rhode Island cultural institution that everyone can take pride in,” says DaMoura. He adds that during the past 15 years since its opening, the museum has welcomed visitors from 32 states and 39 foreign countries. Several schools and college/universities have welcomed
students and the museum’s education committee has sponsored a traveling exhibit that has been shown at libraries, schools, festivals, and diversity programs throughout Rhode Island. According to Smart, two of the museum’s most successful regular events are the Cape Verdean Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Cape Verdean communities of New England, and Tardi Kultural, an arts festival that celebrates the rich culture of Cape Verdean life. DMoura says that building campaigns have generated financial and moral support from all parts of the country. Board members have organized a Cape Verdean Museum Supporters Club, which for a monthly or annual fee, offers free entrance to the museum, discounts on purchases, certain event discounts, a special edition annual calendar , and other benefits.
