Anthony’s Authentic Italian Cuisine: A Fixture on the Hill By Mark Berger
Owner of Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, Anthony Palmisano, knows Federal Hill in Providence well. His family has been a part of that neighborhood for more than a century after emigrating from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His family grew up close to the area, and when he opened his restaurant on 441 Atwells Ave. in Providence three years ago, it was a homecoming for him and his family. 10

“I left in 1989 to work in Las Vegas and Florida at various Italian festivals,” said Palmisano, who is a third-generation feast festival promoter and a well-known local philanthropist. Our family loves the area and has been a part of this community for years. When this space (for the22 restaurant) was available, it was like coming home again,” he continued.

In November 2018 The Rhody Hen Café opened in Pawtucket Rhode Island. For just over a year they were on a steady incline and gaining new fans and steady customers every week. Business is looking good... and then the pandemic hit. Limited indoor seating, challenged outdoor seating, and sometimes the weather was against them. Sometimes the neighbors were against them. But that’s not stopping the team at The Rhody Hen Café. Their menu is still one of the best in town and their loyal customers continue to come back every week. Tiffany and Antonio Barrera are in it for the long haul; reinventing their work model to fit 2020’s new format and moving into 2021. Last summer, Antonio went on a road trip to Alabama to pick up a custom made smoker. Since then, he has been perfecting his perfect dry rubs and sauces that go on the ribs and chicken. They have also been working on smoked short ribs and pork belly. The addition of BBQ dinners added to the volume of takeout orders. Starting the second week of January, The Rhody Hen Café will be offering an additional dinner menu called The Smoking Hen. BBQ dinners will be available Tuesday thru Saturday until 8PM for pick up/ to go. Orders will have to be in by 1pm that day. The latest order taken for BBQ pickup will be 5pm.

The Rhody Hen Café does not use any third party delivery services. It makes for better accuracy of orders if the customer speaks to the kitchen themselves. Third party delivery services may also compromise the integrity of the food and Tiffany and Antonio find it very important that their customers get exactly what they want the way they want it. Having the customers come pick up their orders also provides an opportunity to build a face to face relationship with the hopes of those people becoming regulars. They also have a food truck that has been described as a “labor of love”. The pandemic has kept them from plans but now they are hoping it will be up and running in February of 2021. The food truck will carry customer favorites, as well as BBQ and some new items that Antonio hasn’t even told Tiffany about yet. Tiffany added, “Antonio and I have big plans for the future of The Rhody Hen.” Weekend specials, breakfast, lunch, and BBQ! There is so much to choose from you almost HAVE TO come back over and over again to try everything. Accompany your meal with a local beer or a specialty Rhody Hen libation. Tis The Season For Winter Squash It’s that time of year when the plump, often misshapen varieties of winter squash are plentiful. Don’t let their unusual shapes and sizes intimidate you. The varieties of these fruits (yes, because of their seeds and the fact they are grown from the flower producing part of a plant, they are considered to be fruits) are as abundant as the summer fruits were a few months ago. Once you get them home, there are so many different recipes for them. They can be the centerpiece of your family’s lunch or dinner, or a side dish to any meal. They’re so cheap, as well, so bringing home a loadful will be easy on your pockets. They are, also, easy to store, so there’s no worries about them spoiling before being used. One popular thing to do with winter squash is to stuff them. Not only will you use the winter squash, but you can also use so many different stuffing ingredients that are already in your refrigerator.
Ingredients
Stuffed Winter Squash
• 2 acorn, delicata, dumpling, or carnival squash, cut in half through the stem and seeded • 2 teaspoons olive oil, plus more for rubbing the squash and oiling the dish • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 6 ounces chorizo or sweet Italian sausage, crumbled or cut into small pieces • 1 cup chopped leeks (from 1 small leek) • 1 cup chopped apple or pear (from 1 to 2 fruit) • Freshly ground pepper • 2 cups sliced tender greens (like spinach, tatsoi, kale, Swiss chard), cut into ribbons • 4 fresh sage leaves, coarsely chopped • 2 cups cooked millet, rice, or quinoa • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Rub the flesh of each squash half with olive oil, and oil an ovenproof dish or baking sheet. Sprinkle the whole baking dish with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt. Lay the squash flesh-side down in the dish and bake until it is very tender when pricked with a fork, 30 to 40 minutes. Remove the squash from the oven and raise the oven temperature to 425°F. Meanwhile, heat the remaining olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chorizo or sausage and fry until browned. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the leeks to the hot oil and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Add the apple, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper, and cook for another minute. Add the greens, sage, cooked grains, and reserved sausage. Cook for another minute, stirring to combine, and remove from heat. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper if needed. Flip the cooked squash over in the baking dish so it is flesh-side up. (Be careful, as steam will escape when you turn it.) Scoop the filling into the cavity of each squash half, piling it into a mountain so that it holds as much as possible. Sprinkle with cheese and bake until the cheese melts, about 10 minutes.

Irresistible Mashed Winter Squash Ingredients • 1 butternut squash 4-5lbs • 1/3 cup butter divided, melted • 2 tablespoons brown sugar optional • ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon • salt & pepper to taste • ¼ cup light cream
This recipe creates a side dish that is delicious and impossible to resist.
Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Cut butternut squash in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. 3. Lightly brush the squash with melted butter (reserve the rest for mashing). 4. Sprinkle with spices and brown sugar. 5. Place on a baking sheet cut side up and bake 1 hour or until very tender. 6. Scoop out the flesh and place in a large bowl. 7. With a hand masher or an electric mixer on low, mix until smooth. 8. Pour in cream and melted butter to taste. 9. Season with salt & pepper, or with some brown sugar for a sweeter disn, and serve. Boiling/steaming butternut squash is a quicker method, but it doesn’t have quite as much flavor. Baked butternut squash doesn’t absorb water and it caramelizes a bit, adding another layer of flavor, so that’s a good reason to bake it in the oven. If you’re short on time, the squash can be cut into chunks and steamed about 15 minutes. Prep the Squash: Before cutting into the butternut squash, slice a very thin piece off the bottom (the widest part) and set it upright on a towel to keep it sturdy. Then cut it straight down the middle from the top with less worry! Once you have scooped the seeds out, brush the inside with a portion of the melted butter and sprinkle with your choice of spices and brown sugar. Bake and Mash: Place butternut squash on a baking sheet, cut sides up, and bake until extra tender. When it’s done cooking and cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh and place in a large mixing bowl! Mix the butternut squash to your desired consistency, slowly adding the cream and the remaining butter! Now, that sounds like a dish that is irresistible! This recipe is also easy to personalize to your taste! Mashed butternut squash with maple syrup will have a smoother texture than mashed butternut squash with brown sugar but both sweet and savory delicious!

I’ve had Clams Casino in many different forms. Back when I worked in Italian restaurants in New York, we would make a breadcrumb mixture, press it onto a freshly opened whole clam, and then place a small piece of bacon on top before it went into the oven. It was good, but the clam often stuck to the shell, and many people didn’t want to gulp down a whole clam like that. When it was time for me to make my own recipe, I decided that I would chop the clams and mix them into the breadcrumb mix, so that every bite was the same.
Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil
Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the onions, and sauté them until they’re translucent. Add the garlic, and cook for 10 seconds. Add the wine and simmer for a minute. Add the bread crumbs, and stir the mixture until it becomes thicker, like a paste. Add the parsley and oregano. Season with pepper. (There’s going to be plenty of salt in the clam juice and bacon, so no salt is needed).
1/3 cup finely chopped Vidalia or other sweet onion (about a 1/2 an onion) 2 garlic cloves, squeezed through a garlic press
Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool.
1/3 cup dry white wine
It’s time to open the clams. If you know how to do that, open them over a sieve with a bowl underneath so that the clam meats and juices are captured. Discard any broken shells, but save the good ones.
1/3 cup unflavored bread crumbs 1 tablespoon fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano Freshly cracked black pepper 2 dozen medium neck clams
Bring a large pot of water to boil, and drop the clams into it, about 10 at a time, for 30 seconds. Don’t let them open! Remove the clams with a slotted spoon and place them in a bowl to cool. Continue doing this in small batches until all the clams have been in the water. You’ll find this makes opening the clams much easier. Then proceed as above. Once you’ve shucked all the clams, let the clam juice sit for a bit, so that any grit settles to the bottom of the bowl. Then pour off the clean clam juice and add it to your bread crumb mixture. (Don’t worry if it looks soggy at this point.)
I like to hand chop the clam meats instead of using a food processor. You want tasty clam chunks, not too big but not mush. Add the clams to the the bread crumb mix. At this point, if the clam mix looks very soggy, simply add a little more bread crumb to dry it out. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with foil. Separate the clam shell halves and wash them, making sure you don’t have any shell fragments left in the clam shell. Fill them with the clam mixture, mounding them slightly, and placing each one on the baking sheet. 1/3 lb. bacon, cut in small squares to fit the clam shells
Cut the bacon in small squares to fit the clam shells. Place a small piece of raw bacon on the top of each clam. Bake until the clams are just cooked through, the topping is golden, and the bacon is cooked, about 30 minutes. 20 Shop In RI

OPERATION WARP SPEED By Julia Romano
In an effort to crush the COVID-19 virus that, without invitation, entered the United States from China sometime in early 2020, President Donald Trump officially unveiled “Operation Warp Speed” on May 15th, 2020, a plan that President Trump already had in progress to develop a vaccine to combat the virus for the American people. At the time, there were many naysayers, due to the limited timeframe, and this was a seemingly highly ambitious effort but, if successful, would accelerate the manufacturing and logistics’ preparations to distribute a coronavirus vaccine that would prove to be effective in clinical trials in record time. As the vaccine development seems to be at the point where it will be ready by December’s end, it means that drugmakers will have accomplished something that has never happened in the history of the United States: a safe and effective vaccine available in less than one year. According to a statement by the United States Department of Defense (DOD), “Using the resources of the Federal Government and the United States private sector, Operation Warp Speed was going to accelerate the testing, supply, development, and distribution of safe and effective vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics to counter COVID-19 by January 2021. A formal announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), also set January 2021, as the goal for making “substantial quantities of a safe and effective vaccine available for Americans.” Many people from many sects resisted the possibility that it could be done, based on the timeline of the objective, considering the average development timeline for a vaccine, including clinical tests and manufacturing, can take 10 to 15 years. The White House and President Trump spoke of their confidence about Operation Warp Speed and expressed that it was going to be “unlike anything our country has seen since

the “Manhattan Project” initiative during WWII. Operation Warp Speed is a partnership among several components of the HHS and the DOD. There is also collaboration with private firms and other federal agencies, and coordinating among existing HHS-wide efforts to accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics. Operation Warp Speed has also partnered with the private sector, academia, research institutions, other federal departments and agencies, and state, local, and tribal governments. On March 27, Congress, with President Trump’s support, directed almost $10 billion for Operation Warp Speed through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. That amount included more than $6.5 billion designated for countermeasure development through BARDA and $3 billion for NIH research. Although there will likely be several drug manufacturer’s that hop on board to develop a coronavirus vaccine, there are two that the United States have worked with from the start - Pfizer and Moderna. In July, President Trump’s administration reached its first agreement with Pfizer to provide $1.95 billion to support the mass manufacturing and distribution of 100 million doses, with the option to purchase a total of 600 million doses, shortly thereafter. This investment made it possible for the vaccine to be provided by Pfizer free of charge. Moderna became the second drug manufacturer to enter the vaccine arena in August 2020. HHS announced up to $1.5 billion in funds to support the large-scale manufacturing and delivery of Moderna’s investigational vaccine
candidate. Under the terms of the agreement, the United States government will own the resulting 100 million doses of vaccine, and will have the option to acquire more. OTHER FOCUSES: Therapeutics to treat virus stricken Americans In October 2020, HHS announced an agreement with AstraZeneca for late-stage development and large-scale manufacturing of the company’s COVID-19 investigational product, a cocktail of two monoclonal antibodies that may help treat or prevent COVID-19. The goal of AstraZeneca’s partnership with the United States government is to develop a monoclonal antibody cocktail that can help prevent infection. Also in October 2020, HHS announced a $375 million agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to purchase the first doses of the company’s COVID-19 investigational antibody therapeutic bamlanivimab, a drug that is a possible treatment for COVID-19 in outpatients. In late November 2020, HHS announced plans to allocate initial doses of Regeneron’s investigational monoclonal antibody therapeutic, casirivimab and imdevimab, which received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on November 21, 2020, for treatment of non-hospitalized patients with mild or moderate confirmed cases of COVID-19 at high risk of hospitalization. The naysayers, so far, have had to stand back regarding their beliefs about the vaccine not being ready when the January 2021 date was set. Not only are they ready, it happened five times faster than the fastest prior vaccine development in history.
VACCINE DISTRIBUTION PLANS Operation Warp Speed collaborated with the CDC to develop the plans and infrastructure for distribution of the vaccine, even prior to it being approved or authorized. The CDC-recommended allocation policy includes a tiered approach, based on methodologies developed as part of pandemic flu planning, and adjusted based on the COVID-19 response data on the virus and its impact on diverse populations and the performance of a given countermeasure. DOD said they will support the CDC to distribute any FDA authorized or approved vaccines, as directed. President Trump stated that the vaccine will be distributed to frontline workers, the elderly, and high-risk Americans, as a starting point, for they are the obvious groups of those most compromised by the virus, for many different reasons. President Trump announced he would be signing an executive order to ensure that all Americans have access to the virus vaccine before it is shared with other nations. Once the needs of the American people are met, utilization of remaining vaccines and therapeutics will be distributed as a matter of national policy. In addition to the vaccine, there are many other focus areas for Operation Warp Speed, including development and testing of therapeutics, development and testing of diagnostics, supply production, and therapeutics; security and assurance of vaccine, diagnostics, and therapeutic development, testing, supply, production, and distribution. The FDA has had rigorous scientific and regulatory processes in place to facilitate development, and to ensure the safety, effectiveness, and quality of COVID-19 vaccines.

Well I’m sure everyone is happy to be ringing in the new year. Times are a little bit different, but one thing that will never change is people always want to start the new year off with a new year’s resolution. A lot of resolutions are to be healthier, exercise, join a gym, go on a diet, etc.
fact. Things happen in the brain when one is exercising. We have all heard when you exercise you stimulate your endorphins and endorphins are what makes us happy. There are many other chemical reactions going on when we are exercising and this in turns lifts your mood.
For most, these resolutions usually last a couple of months and then it’s back to the old you. My goal for this article was to share ideas of how to stay motivated so you keep with the plan this year. I’m going to start with listing a few and I mean “few” because there are so many more reasons to exercise, but I wanted to list some of the obvious. Exercise lifts you mood. This is a scientific

Another huge benefit of exercise is it reduces stress. We could all use a little stress relief right about now and no better way than to exercise. I’ve always said exercise is the best medicine. Again, there are so many more benefits but those few should make anyone want to get started. Now, how do you stay motivated? I put together a list of ideas to help you. TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME.
Don’t expect something to happen overnight. Sure there are all these crash diets where you lose a ton of weight very quickly, but they don’t work long term. You need to change your lifestyle. As far as exercising, don’t expect to go out and run a marathon if you never ran. Start slow and build.
Run a lap around a track and everyday add another lap. Start with five pushups and everyday add a pushup. Build slowly. Your body will change even starting slow because it’s a change for your body. Your body will react. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVITY.
No one likes, need, or wants to be around negativity. Rid yourself and your life of negative people. Associate with people who lift you up. Make you feel good and encourage you in your goals. MAKE SMART/REAL GOALS.
Again, don’t expect a miracle overnight. Things that happen slowly are the ones that usually last. Don’t go on a crash diet. Start changing your eating habits slowly. If you just say “that’s it I’m done with chips, sugar candy, etc.” The odds are you will do it for a while but it won’t last. If you eliminate certain foods slowly and replace them with better choices, you will soon realize you are eating a much healthier diet. Same with exercise. Set realistic goals. Don’t say “I’m going to workout or run everyday this week.” Start by saying “I’m going to workout or run three days this week”. Build. It’s all about building. REWARD YOURSELF
This doesn’t always mean food. Yes you can once in a while reward yourself with a sweet treat. Absolutely! Key words: “once in a while”. Reward yourself in other ways. Buy that bag you’ve wanted. Make a vision board. When I lose 5lbs I will buy that bag I want. When I lose 10lbs I’ll buy a new outfit. When I lose 15lbs I’ll pay it forward and donate
my old clothes or I’ll donate to an animal shelter. Have a board, write your vision and your goals. Look at it everyday. This will hold you accountable and give you reasons to stay on track. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
Believe you can do anything you put your mind to because the truth is you can. Know in your heart you can and you will achieve whatever it is you are trying to achieve. Forget what everyone else thinks. Believe in yourself and be the best you you can be. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. We are all unique and we all have our own special gift or talent or both. The only competition going on is you are competing with who you were yesterday. This is true not only for the physical you but the mental and spiritual you as well. Everyday try to be better than you were yesterday. This also keeps you young. It’s never too late to start. Pick a day and get started but remember Someday is not a day in the week.

I am already awake; however, I pretend to be sleeping because I enjoy when my kids (ages 5 and 3) come in for a cuddle. The rule is we do not get out of bed until the clock reads 6:30. I go to sleep at night looking forward to this moment of stillness and quiet with the whole family.

As a believer that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing, I gear up with my Luxxie Boston camisole in Cosmic Latte and a chunky wool sweater on this frosty day. My kids’ bento boxes are assembled with the flair of Mondrian and their face masks and backup face masks are packed. I put the kids in snowsuits to keep them toasty and we head out for our 10-minute walk to school. No matter the weather, we always walk to get everyone’s nervous energy out for the day.

It is the holidays and I love the merriment of the season. For my lingerie company, Luxxie Boston, we gift wrap every order this month regardless if the item is a present. I usually check the orders for the day and make sure the fulfillment center has enough wrapping material and inventory to ensure timely delivery. This year’s theme is boxwood greenery tied with a navy velvet ribbon.

My husband and I are both working from home. One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that we get to have lunch together every day. Some days it is just a quick hummus sandwich, but today we are having pasta with a creamy mushroom sauce.

Time to pick up the kids from school! Again, we are walking some days this is my only opportunity to exercise. The kids tell me about their day over a snack of dino nuggets, blueberries and pretzel sticks. Then it is back to work for us all; I setup their office/playroom next to mine so we can spend this time together.
5pm
Dinner time - tonight we are having swordfish with a ginger sesame kale salad and coconut rice. We go around the table telling each other our top 3 favorite/least favorite moments of the day. The kids have their obligatory two bites and go off to continue playing while my husband and I enjoy the remainder of our meal and a bottle of Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

Bedtime!!! We’ve all earned our sleep. My husband and I tag team - one with each child. My approach to bedtime is stricter than my husbands’, but both seem to work. My son chooses his Captain America pajamas and my daughter chooses her Incredible Hulk pjs - yes, you read that correctly. For myself, it is my Luxxie bralette slip in Platinum with wooly socks; yes, I sleep with socks on.

Video chats and email fill much of my day, but my evening is spent talking to our manufacturers in Los Angeles. I think we are going to make a lilac camisole for Spring 2021 and introduce a pleated silk short you can wear to bed or out.

Cuddled up in bed, draped in the warm embrace of my silk slip and down comforter, I am obsessively reading the space opera Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. I often stay up super late because I cannot put it down. I read mostly with the Kindle App on my phone, so I do not have to worry about waking my husband. I often pay for this obsession in the morning.

In addition to the emotional impact a divorce can have, it can also take a significant toll on finances. If you have recently gone through a divorce, now may be a good time to take a fresh look at your financial situation. Consider how these steps may help you get on firmer footing: ADJUST YOUR BUDGET: A good place to start is to establish a budget that reflects your current monthly income and expenses. Calculate your new monthly income, including spousal or child support if applicable, and estimate what you expect to earn over the next year. If you are a stay-athome parent or spouse, you may decide to re-enter the workforce to bolster your income. Or the time may be right to switch careers or seek a higher-paying job. Next, look at your spending to see if you need to adjust your patterns. MONEY FUNDAMENTALS FOR KIDS Parents with school-age children are filling in as teacher more often these days due to COVID-19 and distance learning. Why not add a few lessons on money fundamentals while you have a captive audience? Here are five simple lessons on “dollars and sense” that can help kids develop a financial foundation. LESSON #1: MONEY ISN’T FREE. Children may have limited understanding of where money comes from. They may not realize there are limits to the amount of money that is available for things they want. Tell them that money is a byproduct of work, and that there are limits to its supply. LESSON #2: DON’T SPEND WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE. It will probably come as a surprise to kids to learn that when money is borrowed in the grownup world, the borrower has to repay more than they borrowed! You can also point out that if everything in their piggy bank is gone, they won’t have money left for other things they may want or need at a later date. Talk with older children about the risks of overspending and credit history. A poor credit history due to youthful money mismanagement can harm their ability to get a car or home loan down the road. Bad credit can even affect employment. LESSON #3: SPEND THOUGHTFULLY. Help your kids learn to be deliberate with their dollars. They can practice smart spending by answering these three questions about hypothetical purchases: … CAN I AFFORD IT? … IS IT WORTH IT? … WILL I REGRET IT? This framework of questions gives kids the power to make better spending choices. LESSON #4: GET IN THE HABIT OF SAVING. Show how much easier it is to save when its done regularly, even in small amounts, and that savings can help meet larger goals. This can be demonstrated with simple visual addition problems on paper. Don’t forget to mention the other crucial role of savings for adults —as protection when work is interrupted or an unexpected expense occurs. Older students earn extra credit with a lesson on compound interest.
LESSON #5: MONEY DESERVES RESPECT. Teach your kids to handle their money with care. That means not stuffing dollars into pockets or leaving change at the bottom of a backpack. Currency kept neatly folded in a wallet or change purse shows respect for the value it represents. The same applies to debit and credit cards, which are as good as money. They too should be guarded, especially to prevent them from being lost or stolen. Follow your own advice and be a good example. Just as you are a resource for your children, your financial advisor can be a source of financial knowledge for you. Keep your own finances on track with regular financial reviews and you’ll be even better prepared to engage your kids in meaningful conversations about money. Kids and dogs are a natural combination, like peanut butter and jelly or macaroni and cheese. Most
children
enjoy
the
companionship of a family pet, whether it’s a dog, cat, turtle, hamster, rabbit, parakeet, iguana, or a school of swimming tropical fish. While I always enjoyed and owned a family dog, a few cats, and an occasional small turtle purchased from the local Five and Dime store, I became seriously interested in the sport of dogs when I began exhibiting Kerry Blue Terriers in the 1980s, when I joined the Providence County Kennel Club (PCKC) in Rhode Island and the Wampanoag Kennel Club (WKC) in New Bedford. PCKC, which is still quite active, was led by the Hon. John Mutter and Bonnie Riker, who later became his wife. Bonnie, who passed away a few months ago, was the hostess of “Romper Room,” a local broadcast that attracted legions of young fans. Two local dog show luminaries, who also left their mark on the sport of dogs, were Louis Iacobucci, a world-renowned breeder of champion Irish Setters, who wrote a popular dog column in the Providence Journal for many years. Another Irish Setter breeder, Claire Andrews, also gained widespread acclaim as a judge and always attracted a large

following, then her dogs appeared ringside to see the handsome red-colored Setters. I began to judge AKC-licensed classes for Junior Showmanship in the late 1980s, a pursuit that I still continue to enjoy Junior Showmanship, also called Junior Handling, is a sport for young people in which they exhibit their dog handling skills in an event similar to a conformation dog show. Unlike a conformation show, it is the young handlers who are judged, not their dogs. Not only do the young handlers learn the art of handling, but also learn about other breeds and good sportsmanship, and also become lifelong friends, while enjoying successful careers as veterinarians, vet techs, groomers, professional handlers, and other rewarding occupations. Once I began to judge Junior Showmanship, I was
asked by Al Kirby of the Wampanoag Kennel Club to substitute at a 4H show at the Stratham Fair in New Hampshire, where I was to judge fitting and showmanship classes. That introduction led me to officiate at fairs and competitions in several states, including The Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield.
and taught me how to be a good sport. It gave me many valuable experiences, not necessarily found in a classroom. You have to learn to be patient. It’s not just all about instant gratification.” Langellotti plans to enroll her young daughter in a 4H program when she is older so that she, too, can derive the same benefits, opportunities, and fun.
As a Junior, my assignments have taken me to Missouri, Illinois,Virginia, and throughout New England. Needless to say, it has been a rewarding advocacy that has afforded me the opportunity to meet wonderful young handlers and judges, learn about fascinating canine breeds, and to visit places that I’d only once read about, but had never had the opportunity to visit.
When asked about her experiences with Basenjis, including a trip to the famed Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden, where she exhibited her dog, Langellotti simply laughs.
Once I learned the ring procedures and discovered that mixed-breeds were allowed to compete at 4H events, the day began to unfold. I was presented with classes that were filled with dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages, and handlers, who presented themselves professionally, displayed good sportsmanship, and whom all truly liked their dogs.

One young lady, Jodi Langellotti, remains a Facebook friend. During a recent telephone conversation, the busy wife, daughter, public speaker, and blogger, vividly recalled that her canine charge, a delightful mixed-breed named Scruffy, brought so much joy and made her mother laugh and smile that day and for several years to come. “I wanted to get into the breed ring and Juniors,” Langellotti recalls, adding that she subsequently exhibited Basenjis in conformation and obedience.
“If you want a perpetual toddler, get a Basenji,” she suggests. “This is a breed that is smart, fun, independent, and very mischievous.”

Since becoming president in 2005, Laurie White has worked to advance the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. They have seen increased growth with membership rising to more than 8,000 members representing 1,200 companies. Events were plentiful and in abundance for professionals to attend, network, and grow. Then March 2020 altered the way business happened. In-person meetings and functions were replaced by virtual meetings and livestream programs. Conducting business changed from that point forward and for months, thereafter. However, for White and her eight-person staff, they found ways to persevere amid uncertainty. “Our Chamber hasn’t skipped a beat since the pandemic hit,” she said. “We have been working throughout this time to ensure our members stay informed about the services we provide, are educated about what’s happening at the state and federal levels, and meeting when it’s safe to do so. We continue being a valued resource for our members, as we navigate through this together.”

Among the resources for which they continue to help members include the PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) and other grant applications, getting COVID-19-related supplies, such as sanitizers, masks, and gloves out to those in need, and hosting programs to help those coping with the new reality. While some companies had to unfortunately close their doors, other businesses have been created, as a result. There are opportunities for people to explore, but there are also numerous issues affecting members and nonmembers, alike. White cited the rising healthcare costs and COVID-19 cases happening both on state and national levels as two major topics of concern. People are going to stay vigilant and make sure they are doing everything they can to keep themselves and those around them safe, she said. One positive product of the pandemic was the creation of “Chamber TV.” White said that the idea came about as a way of keeping members informed regarding Chamber business by inviting guest speakers to deepen the conversation on those relevant issues.
For the coming year, the Chamber president hopes that larger events can once again take place and there is a sense of normalcy that returns. There is work to be done on that and other fronts. However, she’s always feeling good about those prospects.

Because of the unknown, people are going to work from home and meet via virtual meetings, such as Zoom, to prevent the spread of this disease. There will be no getting around that reality for some time and business owners will have to make tough choices about staying virtual and downsizing their buildings or renegotiating their leases. As for the Greater Providence Chamber and their mission, White said that getting involved now has several advantages over going it alone.
There is no set time when the show airs, but White said they put on a show roughly three to four times a week and catalog every show so they can be referenced. “It made sense for us to get information out about the CARES Act funding, what’s happening in the school systems, and with large-scale programs,” she said. “We have interviewed presidents of area hospitals, frontline workers, and marketing strategists, among other people, to get their respective takes on these situations. There have been roughly 90 shows we’ve done since March, and it’s been great because people can also call in and ask questions. We are looking forward to doing more shows.” While this year has been one of constant concern and change, White hopes the coming year will bring about stability for the business community. The year 2020 has been all pandemic and COVID-19 related news. That reality will continue until a widespread vaccine gets distributed and people feel more comfortable about going out without masks or the fear of getting sick.
“Being part of a Chamber gives us and the businesses that support us strength in numbers. It’s also a chance for people to ‘find their tribe’ and become part of something that is larger than themselves. Also, it’s a network of professionals that look out for one another. That would not happen for someone who is going it alone,” White said. White’s staff works in four-week blocks. She said that there is little point in planning events and services longer than that because of the constant uncertainty over what is happening and the ensuing effects of those actions. She also gives a lot of credit to the Chamber’s Board of Directors, who have spent plenty of time and effort to guide the entity through these issues and change. Before answering the question of How long does a toilet wax ring last, it may be helpful to know what the heck a wax ring has to do with your toilet in the first place.
replaced because it is found to no longer be functional, my recommendation is to have it done by a professional.
A wax ring for your toilet is pretty much precisely what it sounds like – a ring made out of a very tacky wax which aids in forming a watertight seal at the point where the bottom of the toilet and the top of the sewer pipe meet.
Could an average homeowner replace the wax ring? Of course! Because of the expertise involved though, I personally would not recommend it. I have seen a number of times in the past when folks thought that it was easy enough to do and attempted to do it themselves with disastrous results.
A plumber by the name of Paul Thies is credited with inventing the wax seal in the mid-1950s. There have been a number of modifications to this handy methodological device over the years but all with the same intent – to minimize the potential for leakage at this crucial juncture where the bottom of the toilet meets the top of the sewer pipe. So what happens if the wax ring does leak? This, of course, should be answered in the context of the fact that water needs only the slightest bit of a compromise at this critical meeting point, to begin seeping out and leaking toward whatever may be located below it. A leak in a wax ring may be noticed soon after it is incurred or it may, literally, take years to be discovered. These types of leaks are most often learned about, as was the recent experience realized by a Client of ours, when a ceiling below the toilet begins to show some signs of water staining, which, in turn, is often then traced back to the toilet where it is found out that the wax ring has been broken in some fashion. In theory, the wax ring “should” last the lifetime of the toilet, or certainly 20 to 30 years.We come across situations all the time, however, where wax rings are in need of replacing well short of this scenario. Besides leaking, signs that the wax ring may need replacing could be an odd odor seemingly stemming from the area where the toilet meets the floor, or if the toilet itself feels wobbly. If a toilet is not properly secured, it may get loose to the point where the wax seal gets damaged and subsequently begins leaking to some degree (obviously it IS possible to catch the wobbliness prior to the wax seal being broken).If a wax ring does need to be 66 Shop In RI
Either a plumber has to be called in to properly correct things, a leak occurs where the damage needing to be corrected is super-involved, or some combination of both! I have seen non-knowledgeable, well-intended homeowners caulk around the base of the toilet (where it meets the floor) attempting to solve what truly is actually a wax ring repair-oriented leak. To a plumber, I imagine this type of homeowner attempt would be “cute” but entirely non-effective. While extremely appealing because the entire material cost of the wax ring fix might be $10 or less, the priceless knowledge of a seasoned professional that can save one from the painfully annoying aggravation of a wax ring leak repair gone bad, is well-worth its weight in gold!

Tasca Family Continues Serving Customers By Mark Berger
Carl Tasca, Jr. and his family understand the importance of keeping customers happy. That characteristic has been ingrained in their family’s history for four generations. Now more than ever, the customer comes first. At the Tasca Automotive Group, with its flagship located on 1300 Pontiac Avenue in Cranston, they have devoted their lives to helping their customers and their communities. They continue thriving through the years with their famous Tasca Family Commitment, “You WILL Be Satisfied!” The last several months have been challenging for business owners of all sizes. That extends to the automobile industry, where many people are thinking more about getting by than they are figuring out their long-term prospects. Certain industries have been hit hard by the pandemic, and the car industry has not escaped its wrath. Tasca, Jr. said the ongoing crisis has certainly been a rollercoaster with many twists and turns, but he is very grateful and appreciative that they have been able to persevere and continue to serve their loyal customers. “2020 has been a very challenging year, but we are grateful for the health and safety of our employees and customers,” Tasca, Jr. said. “We are, and continue to be, very positive about 2021, and we look to continue to grow.”
The Tasca Family has been a fixture in Rhode Island for decades. Their roots can be traced back to the mid-1930s. That became a seminal moment because it was in school that a young Bob Tasca, Sr., told his classmates that he wanted to grow up to become a Ford dealer, according to Tasca, Jr.

Several years later, Bob’s vision began to take shape. As you will read, the story of Tasca Automotive Group is one of a local RI family raised in the automotive business and dedicated to the principles of customer satisfaction, family values, and hard work. Bob’s official career started on May 5, 1943, when he became the lot boy at a local Ford dealership. He worked up through service and sales before opening the first Tasca Ford in Bristol, RI, in November 1953. Sadly, the facility fell victim to Hurricane Carol one year later. Undaunted, Bob started over and settled into a small location on Taunton Avenue in East Providence before moving down the street to 777 Taunton Ave. It was there that he became the second largest Ford dealership in the world AND a motorsports icon when he created the legendary Ford Cobra Jet and working with Carroll Shelby to bring Ford into the golden age of muscle cars. This racing heritage continues today. Bob closed Tasca Ford and opened Tasca Lincoln Mercury in 1972. This became both the highest volume and highest customer satisfaction Lincoln Mercury dealership in the world during the 1980’s. The facility also became well known for becoming the birth place of automotive leasing in 1982. Tasca Ford reopened in East Providence in 1994 and quickly became the largest Ford dealer in the market.

The Tasca family then opened its flagship location in Cranston, Rhode Island in 2002. This multi-brand dealership is one of the largest in the country. Bob Tasca, Sr. passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of honesty, integrity and hard work. The Tasca Automotive Group has since grown to 10 locations throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, and Illinois. It includes Ford, Lincoln, Mazda, Volvo, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, and Kia. There are currently 10 Tasca family members spanning three generations operating the organization. Tasca was recently honored as the Dealerrater “Dealer of the Year” for the seventh consecutive year and as the Newsweek’s “Best Dealer in America” for the Northeast. While they proudly celebrate their 77th anniversary, Tasca, Jr., said their best days are ahead and look forward to ensuring that every customer that walks through their doors receives the same satisfying treatment that began several decades ago.
