North Providence is finally getting the restaurant they 401-353-0500 have been waiting for! Until just recently, February to be exact, no one in the are was serving a true farm fresh, scratch made breakfast & lunch; but two brothers and their Chef have changed that, and the locals are raving!

Christopher Howe, Jr., is a life long Rhode Islander,

owning & operating Providence Fire Restoration for Group & Private 30+ years. His younger brother Michael, a Johnson & Wales trainedClasses Chef, andavailable. owner/operator of two other restaurants, has lived in Chicago for 30+ years as well. a wonderful gift!

They hadMakes always talked about opening a restaurant together, and when Chris came across the space located at 1525 Smith Street, they decided it was finally time.

Michael was fortunate to be able to bring out Sarah Bleich as the Chef & General Manager in early 2019.

Sarah was a former student of his from his teaching days in Chicago. While in Chicago, she worked in several restaurants, two of them being Michelin Star establishments. She then moved and worked in one of Michael’s other farm-to-table restaurant in Omaha, NE, called The Grey Plume, where she taught sold out cooking classes on the weekends.

The idea for Howie’s was simple: fresh, great tasting, scratch-made meals prepared by utilizing as many locally sourced products as possible. They set out and developed friendships with over 15 farms in Rhode Island and the New England area. Places like: Baffoni’s Poultry Farm (Johnston), Sprout Organic Farms (Providence), Wright’s Dairy Farm (North Smithfield), and North Country Smokehouse (Claremont, NH) to name just a few.

Preparing items in house is a big art of what Howie’s does. Offering a wide range of breakfast and lunch items, there is really something for everyone. They make their own breakfast sausage, chorizo, “soyrizo” (vegan chorizo), salad dressing, and, their most popular item, corned beef hash. Utilizing beef from Maine Family Farms (Portland, ME), they dry cure the beef for 8 days, then slow cook at low temperatures (to keep it moist!) for up to 24 hours where it becomes pull apart tender. The Avocado Toast is another popular item. I’ve had Clams Casino in many different forms. Back when I worked in Italian restaurants in New York, we would make a breadcrumb mixture, press it onto a freshly opened whole clam, and then place a small piece of bacon on top before it went into the oven. It was good, but the clam often stuck to the shell, and many people didn’t want to gulp down a whole clam like that. When it was time for me to make my own recipe, I decided that I would chop the clams and mix them into the breadcrumb mix, so that every bite was the same.

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/3 cup finely chopped Vidalia or other sweet onion (about a 1/2 an onion) 2 garlic cloves, squeezed through a garlic press 1/3 cup dry white wine 1/3 cup unflavored bread crumbs 1 tablespoon fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano Freshly cracked black pepper 2 dozen medium neck clams 1/3 lb. bacon, cut in small squares to fit the clam shells Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Directions:

Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the onions, and sauté them until they’re translucent. Add the garlic, and cook for 10 seconds.

Add the wine and simmer for a minute. Add the bread crumbs, and stir the mixture until it becomes thicker, like a paste. Add the parsley and oregano. Season with pepper. (There’s going to be plenty of salt in the clam juice and bacon, so no salt is needed).

Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool.

It’s time to open the clams. If you know how to do that, open them over a sieve with a bowl underneath so that the clam meats and juices are captured. Discard any broken shells, but save the good ones.

Bring a large pot of water to boil, and drop the clams into it, about 10 at a time, for 30 seconds. Don’t let them open! Remove the clams with a slotted spoon and place them in a bowl to cool. Continue doing this in small batches until all the clams have been in the water. You’ll find this makes opening the clams much easier. Then proceed as above.

Once you’ve shucked all the clams, let the clam juice sit for a bit, so that any grit settles to the bottom of the bowl. Then pour off the clean clam juice and add it to your bread crumb mixture. (Don’t worry if it looks soggy at this point.)

I like to hand chop the clam meats instead of using a food processor.

You want tasty clam chunks, not too big but not mush. Add the clams to the the bread crumb mix. At this point, if the clam mix looks very soggy, simply add a little more bread crumb to dry it out.

Line a large baking sheet with foil. Separate the clam shell halves and wash them, making sure you don’t have any shell fragments left in the clam shell. Fill them with the clam mixture, mounding them slightly, and placing each one on the baking sheet.

Cut the bacon in small squares to fit the clam shells. Place a small piece of raw bacon on the top of each clam.

Bake until the clams are just cooked through, the topping is golden, and the bacon is cooked, about 30 minutes.

Here we are again. It’s that time of year when we all contemplate what we intend to do for our New Year’s resolution. I’ll join the gym or eat healthier, I will lose weight or cut out sweets, etc. For most, this doesn’t last much beyond the month of January. It sounds good, but when it comes to seriously making the commitment, people just can’t seem to stick with it. This is where I preach that is not about losing weight, it’s about living a healthy lifestyle. Such a cliche, I know, but let me explain further.

Any day in which you are blessed with awakening, can be the first day of your future. You are in control. Over and over again, I remind people of how much better they will feel when exercise is a natural part of their daily routine, part of their life style

and part of who they are. You won’t just feel better physically, you will feel more energized, mentally. I do not agree with or like fad diets. Sure, they work initially. They work because you are shocking your body by drastically changing what the types of food you are eating. Or maybe you are on one of those appetite suppressant diets.

Of course you are going to lose weight, but as soon as you are off the suppressants and revert back to your former eating habits, all of those pounds you thought you lost will be back with a vengeance. An appetite suppressant puts your body into a temporary starvation mode, where all of the food you do eat is stored as fat.

Diets do not work long term. This is not a January fix. You need to make a choice to make a change

in your life! Once you realize you need to to take care of yourself, a new feeling of happiness will automatically fall into place. Furthermore, if exercise were part of your everyday life, you’d have more days where you feel that joy.

Forget those days of wanting to just stay in bed, of not wanting to deal with people and not wanting to face life. Then there are a million excuses to not exercise. I’ve heard all of them. It’s really just a matter of how important it is that you feel your best, look your best and be your best. This time of year can be very challenging.

It’s cold out, it gets dark early and let’s face it, unfortunately, the holidays are depressing for many people. For others, you might start feeling depressed

because of the weight you put on over the holidays. Try to push yourself from falling into a depressive state! You are in control. You get to choose whether you get up and work out or whether you stay in bed. You have that choice to exercise after work instead of going straight home to food.

These are your choices. Make the right choice and do something good for you!

When you don’t feel good physically, it’s very hard to be positive, and it’s even harder for others to want to be around you. No one wants to be around a negative person. I realize we all have “bad” days. I’m not saying every day is going to be a great day. I’m not saying you are going to be happy every day, however; when you feel good physically, there will be many more days of when you are happy and positive. The world feels like a different place when you are happy. This life is so short and so precious, why be unhappy when there is another choice, one that will be a positive influence on you and everyone around you?

You have the power to change anything that is NOT working for you. You are in control of everything in your life and you need to believe that. Once you believe it, you give out good vibrations and the universe will repay you in ways you never knew existed. However; you can’t have this attitude if you are not feeling good about yourself and loving yourself. It all starts with how you feel physically and mentally. Stop allowing things and people to control who you are. Stop saying, “woe is me.”

Stop letting stress cause you to sit around and eat.

Stop making excuses to not eat healthy or to not exercise. STOP. Wake up tomorrow and say, “this is the first day of my new, healthy and happy life.”

and the universe will provide it.” You must believe and you must give out positive vibes. You can make yourself feel good. You can make yourself happy.

Once this happens, the changes that will occur in your life will be amazing. You will be amazing!

Franklin Rogers Ltd. started as a complete full line men’s clothing store. The store quickly became the suit store for Providence. Over the past several years, Gross has added a second floor to his operation which features The Groom Store, a custom suit department, and a full line tuxedo and prom department. He has expanded his selection of sizes and price points to be able to greatly broaden the store’s appeal. He has brought in Shoes and dressy clothing as well as broadened his selection of casual clothing. The store reflects what is happening today in fashion, and Gross will tell you that if is in GQ, Franklin Rogers already has it.

Gross, who is going to turn 74 in February relies on his Staff to share the work load that he once handled all by himself. Where once the store sold four to five hundred suits a year, it now sells over three thousand. Gross himself handles much of the day to day operational duties, but relies on three department heads to make sure that things run smoothly.

The Groom Store.

Gross started the groom store business several years ago. He realized he could sell a suit or tuxedo with accessories for less money than it cost to rent one. “Why rent When You Can Own for Less”, is his motto, and it is catching on across the state with Brides and Grooms. The groom store has grown exponentially for its first five years and has exceeded all growth expectations.

Laura Stanzione is the Groom Store Wedding Coordinator, and has years of experience in both design and fashion. She works closely with the Groom and his Bride in order to customize every wedding to the high expectations that her customers expect.

Nathan has brought an addition option to Franklin Rogers as he is an innovative stylist who will custom design a suit that is uniquely yours and certain to bring rave reviews by anybody who sees you wearing it. Our custom suit program includes a range of unique fabrics that come for the finest factories in Biella Italy. Our make is top of the line with full canvas chested jackets. We can even make a custom lining for our customers who might want to convert a picture they cherish into a lining for a suit.

Most important to the operation is the Franklin Rogers Tailor shop. Still offering free tailoring on most of its product line, Gross has relied on Raissa Assad, the director of tailoring.

BIG CHANGES HAPPENING AT SPINNAKER ASSET MANAGEMENT

As the old decade turns into the new decade, Warwick-based Spinnaker Asset Management has taken positive steps to serve their clients and address their growing needs.

Spinnaker President, Ronald Kent, recently hired Lisa Picillo as a new Financial Advisor. Her responsibilities include developing relationships with both new and existing clients, providing advice and financial planning services, and analyzing industry trends and educating clients.

Picillo said the seeds for working at Spinnaker were sown roughly one year ago during a chance meeting at a networking event. “I had just started working at Merrill Lynch at the time I met Ron. For the next several months, we would meet for coffee and talk about the industry and markets. I realized our skill sets are complimentary and we share the same values and investment philosophy”. Ron offered me a position at Spinnaker early on and as we continued to meet, it was clear to me that it was time for me to make a change.”

Kent said that Picillo, “checked all of the boxes” when it came to what he wanted in a Financial Advisor.

“I wanted to find someone with industry experience who was stable, devoted, had a good personality and good at building relationships. Lisa has all of these qualities and is a great addition to shaping the future of this firm.” said Kent.

Picillo has been in the investment industry for more than two decades. She began her career in Financial Services at Fleet Bank as a retail customer service representative in 1998. In 2004, after the Fleet and Bank of America merger, she continued her career with Bank of America and took on other roles including consumer loans, technical support, branch support and business analyst.

In 2007, while expecting her twin girls, Picillo had the opportunity to obtain her Series 7. Upon obtaining her 48 Shop In RI

license, she began a position as an Investment Advisor Representative with Bank of America Investments. Shortly after the birth of her daughters, Picillo accepted a position as a Trader at Fidelity Investments. She held the role for two years before transitioning to a Client Manager within the Institutional Wealth Management Group, which she held until 2018.

In addition to holding a Series 7, she holds Series 66 and RI life & Health. She graduated from Rhode Island College in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.

Picillo is married with 3 children and lives in North Smithfield, RI. Picillo believes strongly in giving back and helping others. She enjoys spending time volunteering in local schools and various non-profit organizations.

SHINES IN NEW ROLE AS TWINS MANAGER By Julia Romano At just 38 years old, Rhode Island native Rocco Baldelli has achieved excellence in more things than most do in a lifetime.

From a very early age, Baldelli exhibited extraordinary determination in whatever he did, and that, combined with scores of natural talent, landed him as a star in Major League Baseball.

Even after suffering several injuries throughout his career, Baldelli refused to give up. His tenacity, and passion for the sport of baseball, led him from centerfield, to exactly where he belongs-as manager of the Minnesota Twins. And in true Baldelli fashion, it didn’t stop there.

AFTER JUST ONE YEAR OF MANAGING THE TWINS, IN 2019, BALDELLI WAS THE YOUNGEST COACH EVER TO BE VOTED MANAGER OF THE YEAR AFTER LEADING MINNESOTA TO ITS FIRST AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL TITLE SINCE 2010.

Rocco was born in 1981 in Woonsocket, RI, to parents Dan and Michelle Baldelli. Throughout his younger years, Rocco, along with his brothers, Nicholas and Dante, played Little League baseball in Woonsocket, with their dad always on the field as the coach for all of their teams. While kids from other parts of the country practiced on an outside field year round, RI’s often inclement winter weather prevented Baldelli from that same amount of practice.

But the freezing cold outside temperatures in RI fell short of stopping Baldelli from creating his own arena for practicing.

Following his dad’s retirement from the Woonsocket Fire Department, he became a small business owner of various types,

including a coffee shop, located in Woonsocket. Baldelli was a driven young man, even as a pre-teen, and refused to lose out on critical practice time. He found a way to take advantage of his dad’s coffee shop’s basement to create a homemade batting cage. The Dungeon, as the basement was referred to, served its purpose better than could have been expected.

At age 12, Baldelli played AAU baseball for the Rhode Island Tides and his team went all the way to the nationals. At age 13, while playing basketball, another sport he excelled in, he shattered his tibia, severely injuring the tendons in his leg. The extent of his injury based on the opinion of several doctors, could have taken Baldelli away from participating in any sport. But after a bit of coaxing from his dad, Baldelli tried out for the local American Legion team after being off the field for a long two years. Although he had a rough start, Baldelli made the team. This accomplishment was the stepping stone to his next couple of years at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, where he mastered a total of four sports and was recipient of all-state honors in baseball, basketball, indoor track, and volleyball. Baldelli didn’t stop there-he was also an exceptional student, receiving high honors in all of his classes, earning an amazing 4.25 GPA. In the summer before his senior year of high school, Baldelli attended a baseball scouting program at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, where his skills became highly visible to many major league organizations. At the 1999 East Coast Showcase in Wilmington, North Carolina, he received a whopping 50 scholarship offers from various colleges after impressing scout observers, and that was just for baseball. Baldelli was also an elite, talented volleyball player, known throughout the country for his skills on the court and, thus, received a UCLA scholarship offer to play volleyball. It was time to choose which sport had won him over.

Prior to the MLB 2000 draft, Baldelli had still not chosen which path he would take for his future. Not confident that he would be chosen before the 5th or 6th round, he, along with his family, agreed that he would attend college unless he was chosen in the first round pick. Well, as fate would have it, Baldelli was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the first round as their first pick; he was the sixth pick overall.

Baldelli started with the Rookie-level Princeton Devil Rays that year. In 2001, he played for the South Atlantic League’s River Dogs Class A team. In 2002, he played at three levels, promoted from High-A to Double A to Triple A, and was named the Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America.

In 2003, Baldelli took his spot where he belonged-in centerfield of the major leagues with the Devil Rays. Starting his major-league career with a 13game hitting streak, he earned the second longest streak to start a career between 1990 and 2003.

In 2004, Baldelli had many ups and downs with injuries. But having complete faith in his abilities, manager Lou Piniella convinced Baldelli of the team’s commitment to him as the starter in center field. This relaxed Baldelli, and as a result, his hitting improved dramatically. A hamstring strain limited Baldelli to 136 games that year, but he hit .280 and his home runs increased to 16 in total. The next injuries seemed to happen one after another. There was a torn knee ligament, followed by an elbow injury, a torn ulnar collateral ligament, and another strained hamstring. As a result of all of these injuries, Baldelli missed the entire 2005 season, but played again in 2006 and 2007. In

His playing suffered and in mid-May after yet another hamstring injury, he was on the injured list for the rest of the season.

At this point, Baldelli was having frequent muscle cramping and severe fatigue, occurring even after minimal exercise. After being examined by several physicians, Baldelli was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder, a defect in the energy-producing part of the body’s cells. But he was not willing to give in to this condition. He returned to play 28 regular-season games in August and September. He hit two home runs in postseason play, including a three-run homer in the ALCS victory that helped propel the Rays to the World Series.

In 2009, Baldelli was re-diagnosed with a protein abnormality that interferes with muscular function. This new diagnosis came when Baldelli joined the Red Sox as a free agent in 2009. Playing for the Red Sox was a “childhood dream” for Baldelli, especially since most of his family were avid Red Sox fans.

During spring training 2010, Baldelli returned to the Tampa Bay Rays as a special assistant to observe and coach players in the organization’s minor league system on baserunning and outfield defense. In June and July of 2010, he played for Tampa’s minor league teams. On September 1, Baldelli was called up to the major league squad to serve as a designated hitter, pinch hitter and reserve outfielder. On September 5, in his first at-bat since returning to the Rays’ roster, Baldelli hit an 8th inning pinch hit 2-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles in Camden Yards and finished the game in right field. This was Baldelli’s last appearance as a player. The effects of the muscular disease, his shoulder injury, combined with Lyme Disease he had contracted as a teenager, were taking their toll, and in 2011, Baldelli retired.

Throughout his career as a baseball player, even with all of his injuries and his muscular functioning disorder, Baldelli never gave up-not on his team, the game, or his will to play. Most would have thrown in the towel. But Baldelli is not a quitter. No matter what physical pain he has had, he never let it keep him down. His ambition was much too strong for that. With all of his remarkable abilities, including his achievements as a student, he could have been whatever he wanted to be. He chose baseball, and as he did with everything else in his life, he put full force effort into it and that’s how he succeeded.

Rocco Baldelli has accomplished some incredible things in just 38 years-and his fellow Rhode Islanders could not be more proud of him.
