United Airlines Is Making a Big Boarding Change In what some might see as an obvious move, United Airlines is making what media outlets are painting as a big change to its boarding process: Passengers with window seats will board first. Well, they’ll still board after everyone who is allowed to pre-board, plus all the fancy passengers (business class, first class, certain credit card holders, et cetera). But they’ll board before those with middle or aisle seats (as will those in exit rows), the New York Times reports. The process is for some reason referred to as WILMA for “window, middle, aisle,” because after the window seat holders, it’s the middle seat sitters who board next, followed by those in the aisle seats. The final group allowed to board the plane will be those in basic economy, a fare type that does not include a carry-on bag, or anyone without a boarding group listed on their boarding pass, Travel + Leisure reports. The Times says United tested the WILMA method at five airports in 2017, but other outlets are reporting that the airline once used the method more widely and then stopped using it in 2017, when the basic economy fare was introduced, because its computer systems at the time only allowed for five boarding groups (there are now six, thanks to updated systems). Confusingly, the Washington Post is reporting that WILMA was launched in 2017 because of the introduction of the basic economy fare, but was later paused and is now resuming. Whatever the case may be, the airline most recently boarded its planes in the “standard frontto-back approach” most airlines use, Conde Nast reports. It says using the WILMA process, will reduce boarding time by up to two minutes. INGREDIENTS: • 3 lbs. chicken wings • 1/2 cup ketchup • 1/2 cup unseasoned rice vinegar • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon Chinese chili garlic • salt and pepper • chopped scallions • white sesame seeds • chopped cilantro (optional) 12 Shop In RI

To make the glaze, combine the ketchup, rice vinegar, soy sauce, honey, and chili garlic sauce in a sauce pan. Simmer it over medium heat, reducing the sauce by half. Set it aside. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Season the chicken wings with oil, salt and pepper. Spread them out on a sheet pan lined with non-stick foil and bake them until done, about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken from the sheet pan and place them in a large bowl. Raise the oven temperature to 400. Pour off any fat or liquid from the sheet pan and discard it. Bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, until you just start seeing a little char on the edges of the wings. Plate the wings and top them with the scallions, sesame seeds, and cilantro.

Increase CNS (Central Nervous System) Demand: How To Use The Tricks From Functional Training to Improve Your Game In The Cage By Kevin Kearns

For as long as I can remember I heard forever if you want to become stronger you must move heavy weights. The definition of Functional strength training is strength that you can use. That form has to fit the function. This does not mean you have to throw out all those “high school”and “beach muscle” moves you love. What it means is thinking outside the box a little bit. It means being a little crazy and not giving a chit what people might be saying at the gym about you. Especially if you are in the cage. You need an edge.

So lets look at challenging the C.N.S. (central nervous system). What is the CNS? The central nervous system (CNS) is made up of the brain, the spinal cord, and the optic nerves. The central nervous system controls thought processes, guides movement, and registers sensations throughout the body.

Here are some key concepts to remember about functional strength training which will enhance your game. Why do I know?

These are the same concepts I used with 15 UFC fighters personally.

The way that this is different from specific balance training is that you are able to integrate this into your everyday routine. You don’t have to do a separate portion of balance training. You add a little “ salsa” to your normal training to spice things up. Here are some other examples. Plans Its 20th Anniversary Polar Plunge by Mark Berger The first day of 2024 will be special for many reasons. For numerous groups and individuals, they will head to the ocean for a great cause, while helping two local kids who are battling life-threatening illnesses. A Wish Come True (AWCT), the oldest wish-granting organization in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, will host its annual Polar Plunge at Easton’s Beach (aka First Beach) in Newport on Sunday, January 1st, from 11:00 AM until 1:30 PM. Please arrive early, as parking will be limited. This year’s “Wish Kids” are Sofia (from Warwick, age 6) and Graciela (from West Kingstown, age 16). Both wish to travel to Florida to visit Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios! Sofia of Warwick, RI Sofia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia back in July of 2022. She is on an aggressive chemo cycle every three weeks to help her fight off the cancer. 44 Shop In RI

Sofia is excited to spend quality time with her family and make memories in Disney and SeaWorld! Graciela of West Kingston, RI Graciela was diagnosed with cerebal palsy. She was a micro-preemie and twin survivor, being born at 23 weeks old and weighing 1.2 pounds. She spent the first five months of her life in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Graciela has had 11 surgeries and countless procedures, including a stem cell transplant at 2 1⁄2 years old. Graciela is a strong and happy teen who loves to learn and have fun. Graciela also loves thrill rides and is excited to ride the Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios in Disney. AWCT Executive Director Mary-Kate O’Leary said, “Often, people don’t realize they are donating to help make dreams come true for children with a lifethreatening illness. This event features more than 5,000 people willing to head into the water and be ‘freezin’ for a reason. This past year, we granted 43 wishes, the highest in the history of AWCT. We did not anticipate the great need, but are happy that we could grant these wishes, thanks to the incredible support of the community.

“We are especially grateful to the people who made this event so successful for two decades,” said O’Leary, who will be one of the plungers. “The money we raise from this event goes toward helping children and their families find an opportunity for joy, as well as helping the family get back on their feet during this long and challenging journey.”

How to Get the Most Out of Passive Income in Your Portfolio By: Edward Pontarelli Jr. Passive income is broadly defined as money that comes from investments rather than employment wages. Examples include dividend income generated by stock investments or rental income derived from property you own. Passive income can play an important role in helping to meet day-to-day expenses and to accumulate wealth for retirement. According to research from Ameriprise Financial, 40% of investors across multiple generations have some form of passive income, and more than two-thirds (77%) of investors say passive income is important or very important to their retirement strategy. Having more than one source of income to draw from can be a powerful way to hedge against risk and ensure you have the means to cover your expenses. This is particularly true for retirees who no longer earn a traditional income and need to recreate their paycheck. Five primary ways to generate passive income Passive income can originate from a variety of sources. Here are five ways to generate passive income that may be a fit for your financial portfolio: #1 – Dividend-paying stocks and mutual funds or ETFs Stocks that generate competitive dividend yields are a prime source of passive income. If choosing individual stocks, pay attention to their track record. Companies with a history of raising dividend payouts consistently over time may offer the best, long-term opportunity. You can also find mutual funds or ETFs that emphasize dividend-paying stocks. #2 – Bonds and bond index funds or ETFs Investing in bonds is another way to generate income. Even if you are in the accumulation stage of life, bond income can play an important role in helping you build wealth. Not only do bonds offer a way to diversify a stock portfolio, but in today’s market, bond yields are increasingly attractive. Consider that at the end of 2021, the yield on the benchmark 10year Treasury note was 1.52%. At the end of August 2023, the yield was more than 4%. Bond funds and ETFs are generally offering more competitive payouts today as well. #3 – Cash instruments Like bonds, cash-equivalent vehicles such as money market funds and certain certificates of deposit and bank savings accounts pay more attractive yields today. This is in line with changes to the yield environment in the broader bond market. Money put to work in this way generally has the added benefit of protection of principal value. Not only can you earn competitive returns, but you do so in a relatively safe manner. #4 – Rental property Some people choose to own property, such as houses or apartments, rent them out and use the income to buffer their nest egg. While this is considered a passive investment, there may still be some sweat equity and ongoing costs involved in maintaining properties and attracting and managing tenants. You’ll also want to pay close attention to the state of the real estate market where you invest in properties. Ideally, these properties will appreciate in value over time.

#5 – Real estate investment trusts (REITs) If the idea of generating income from owning properties appeals to you, but you don’t feel prepared to tackle the challenge of direct ownership, REITs offer an alternative. REITs are professionally managed like mutual funds, with money invested in properties such as office buildings, apartment complexes, retail spaces, warehouses or hotels. Those who invest in REITs primarily benefit from the income stream generated by the properties held. REITs are subject to market risk and various fees, and dividends are taxed as regular income. Evaluate any investment options carefully to understand how it may impact your situation. Work within your overall plan Passive income is most effective when the investment strategy is implemented within the context of your overall financial plan (with the plan itself designed according to your unique goals, timeframe to achieve them, and level of financial risk you want to accept along the way). Work with your financial advisor to determine how best to incorporate passive income strategies. Don’t Let Emotional Investing Cloud Your Judgement By: Carrie McPherson When it comes to money, it’s easy to let your emotions get the best of you – particularly during periods of personal stress or market volatility. Even seasoned investors should 1 guard against making financial decisions based on feelings instead of facts. Here are four common investment biases that can cloud your judgment. Keeping these tendencies in mind can help you avoid making regrettable decisions regarding your hard-earned money. Overconfidence: Overconfidence implies that investors tend to overestimate their ability to generate a return and underestimate the risk associated with a particular investment. For example, imagine you are an investor who has recently had success picking winning shares. You may conclude that the success is due solely to your investment skill. That may be the case, but it’s also possible the results were due to market forces outside of your control. The problem is that in either case, recent success may encourage you to take greater risks. While this could lead to greater profits, it’s just as likely to result in greater losses. Herding mentality, which is the tendency for investors to follow and copy what other investors are doing, also tends to distort near-term risks in up markets. Thus, investors can mistakenly discount the volatility and chance for loss as they seek to chase higher returns. Investors are best served by following objective information and building in an expectation that stocks do not move in a straight line. Aversion to loss: Aversion to loss is innate. It is said that one feels the pain of a loss twice as strongly as the joy of a gain. In an attempt to minimize the pain associated with an investment loss, investors may be more prone to take action that can lead to the derailment of their long-term investment success. In market drawdowns, investors can be quick to react, selling stocks, and over-allocating to bonds or cash to avoid further losses and protect their nest eggs. Many investors sold down their stock funds in favor of bond funds and cash during the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Unfortunately, by doing so, they missed out on the subsequent rallies that eventually took place and helped propel stocks to new highs. While it is tempting to move to the sidelines during times of market stress, investors may want to avoid over-allocating to cash and avoid locking in investment losses that they would not otherwise incorporate into their regular portfolio management activity. Importantly, if you maintain a well-diversified investment mix and own high-quality stocks and bonds, you should be better able to stomach near-term investment losses and ride out the eventual market cycles that come and go with time. Anchoring: Anchoring implies that investors tend to rely too heavily on specific information or lean on recent circumstances to make decisions. Our minds can ”anchor” to information and use it as a reference point moving forward, regardless of its relevance. For example, investors may hang on to poor investments by waiting for them to break even at the price at which it was purchased.

Pattern-seeking behavior: Pattern-seeking behavior describes our brain’s desire to seek out ways to compartmentalize the flow of information and find patterns that help us make sense of the world quickly. Since our brain is hardwired to do this, investors can mistakenly believe they see patterns in market trends that prove false. Since the future can be unpredictable at times, and patterns are not always present, investors may want to incorporate the following: • Establish realistic expectations for your portfolio, both from a return and risk perspective. • Expect markets to move in unpredictable ways, particularly during periods of market stress. • While the near-term is unpredictable, generally, stocks move up and to the right over the long-term. • Society is aging, and growth is slower. That means the patterns of the past may be harder to apply to the future, or possibly, not relevant. Truly understanding your risk tolerance and your threshold for loss can go a long way in helping you maintain a level head during times of market stress. If you suspect your personal investing bias and emotions are interfering with your investment decisions, defer to the experts. The club features five full-size indoor SportstMaster PRO-cushion courts. They are composed of five layers of rubber pellets, two coats of sand, and several layers of acrylic topcoat. Storti shared, “It’s great to see the investment in the courts has had such a positive impact on the members’ playing experiences. We have members that play 2-3 hours a day, every day; the courts are very forgiving on the body.” According to the owners, about 50% of its membership are newcomers to the sport. The owners understand the importance of providing lessons and opportunities for these members to play with others at their skill levels. Because there are so many new players entering the sport, the club provides a “Pickleball Boot Camp.” These three-hour sessions may have as many as

eight students at a time. The courses usually take place either on Saturday or Sunday. During the camp, the pro will review all aspects of the game, along with the rules and scoring. He or she will provide basic instruction as to all the different shots you’ll need to master. Teaching the basics of court awareness, both with and without a partner. “Once you complete this lesson, then you will have greater confidence. The game itself will be more enjoyable for you and everyone you play with in the future,” Storti said. The cost for non-members for these services is $130; members pay $100. This indoor model is certainly new for Rhode Island, this being only the second indoor club in the state. The Club model ensures the member controls when they play, and when they

arrive the court is ready, so they jump right on and play. The member also chooses how long they want to play. Outdoor programs are great and have for years been the only option. However, on outdoor courts, sometimes you play a few times, sometimes you show up and you can’t even get on the courts. Weather never affects indoor play, and the climatecontrolled environment makes it comfortable, even when you’re working up a sweat. Everything is scheduled in advance. The members log into the booking portal right from their phone. From there, they may reserve private courts, lessons, leagues, and drop-in play. If you’re at the office and it’s 3:30 pm and you decide you want to play at 5:30 that same day– open the portal to see if the court is open, so that you book it just before you arrive. Membership starts at $39 per month, which includes 120

Membership also allows you to book private courts for $30 or $40 an hour, take lessons, join leagues, or just drop in and play with others, all matched up in the calendar by skill level, at different times throughout the day. The club is impressive in size, scale, and decor. The energy level in the club is amazing, and the lighting and court colors are vibrant. There is a clear feeling of community and you sense that the moment you walk in the door. It’s very obvious that a lot of thought went into creating the membership experience. “It’s amazing to see, in just a few weeks, the community that has developed. I was shocked today after realizing that almost a thousand people have passed through the doors in just under four weeks,” said O’Brien. O’Brien goes on. “We struggled

to find the right location, ceiling heights, column spacing, welllighted retail space, with a rent factor that made the membership affordable. We did, but it took almost eight months.” Pickleball is on the rise in Rhode Island! America’s fastest-growing sport is touching down in the Ocean State, with 33 Pickleball courts across the region and a number of great organizations. For the uninitiated, Pickleball is a racket or paddle sport in which two or four players hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball with paddles over a 34-inch-high net, until one side is unable to return the ball or commits an infraction. Pickleball is played indoors and outdoors. In the summer of 1965, Pickleball was founded by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Within days, Joan Pritchard had come up with the name “pickleball”—a reference to the thrown-together leftover non-

starters in the “pickle boat” of crew races. “All across Rhode Island, from Newport to Providence, Bristol to Narragansett, people of all skill levels are picking up their paddles and starting to play Pickleball,” according to the Pickleball Union website. Storti and O’Brien welcome “private events,” businesses or organizations, reserving courts, and using Pickleball for employee team building or to entertain customers. The club has rental paddles and balls, and the event can be competitive or casual. An instructional pro can also add value to the event. The Beauty of a Built-In A ‘built-in’ is a term used in construction that is right up there with the best of the, in terms of those that can be confusing for whomever may be hearing it for the first time. When someone thinks of something being ‘built-in,’ their mind may automatically gravitate toward something as simple as the cupholder in their car. “I have a built-in cupholder in my car,” you may hear from an excited friend. “Oooooooo…fancy…” you may think in your head, (or perhaps not). The concept is very similar in home construction. But whereas a built-in cupholder (to keep with this example) may be something that is fairly standard in the way that it is done across a variety of lines of cars, a ‘built-in’ in someone’s home tends to be a bit more custom. Though there certainly are instances in home building where a ‘builtin’ feature may be one selected from a line, which the builder typically provides to their clients, upon request; the built-ins that I happen to more consistently run into align with something which is truly designed and constructed for the specific home that I come across them in. While built-ins certainly may have elaborate designs behind them and take hours upon hours to create, built-ins are much more often (at least in my world), crafted by master craftspeople and cabinet folks who, although might have a set of basic drawings that they are following as they are building the built-in, they may also not even have a plan at all, and simply rely on their intrinsic vision & talent for craftsmanship that is beyond what the average person may own. The built-in units I typically see are those that are more so on the cabinetry side, which often boast some type of shelving system, sometimes even a window seat. The imagination definitely is the limit, however, in terms of what the

concept of the built-in is limited by. I have seen built-in beds that drop down from a wall, built-in aquariums, built-in tables, etc. The possibilities are endless for intertwining a variety of possible tracts for this cool feature in peoples’ homes. Not as common as a built-in bookshelf or dining room cabinet, built-ins, such as the aquarium idea, are usually SUPER AWESOME (the aquarium is my personal favorite!)!! Built-ins can be worked into the design of one’s home (as we have pointed out earlier), or they can be built along the way as someone is simply trying to more efficiently use a space that for a period of time, they have had no idea what to do with. Built-ins can be painted or finished with some type of stain & polyurethane system. Whatever the finish coat system happens to be, it should be quite durable (think along the lines of something that will provide an enamel-type finish), similar to what you would find associated with a solid kitchen cabinetry system. Sometimes built-ins blend so well with the natural state of a room that one may never even realize that the built-in is a built-in. Other times built-ins are meant to be the focal point of a given room (back to the aquarium example). Whether a built-in is something you are simply looking to for extra storage in the kitchen, or if it was for a huge room with high ceilings whose walls (floor-to-ceiling) themselves consist of bookshelves to form a library, the two-fold purpose of usefulness and cosmetic appeal of built-ins are an age-old phenomenon, which add unique character to whatever home they happen to grace.
