One of the Hottest Landmarks Offering Private, Pricey Tours

Fancy seeing the ancient Acropolis uncluttered by thousands of selfiesnappers? A solution is in the works, but it will set you back up to $5,500. Starting April 1, Greece plans to offer exclusive guided tours of its most powerful tourist magnet to handfuls of well-heeled visitors outside normal opening hours, per the AP. The measure is part of an overhaul of ticketing policy for Greece’s archaeological sites and museums, which will see acrossthe-board increases as of April 2025. The new Acropolis service will apply to a maximum of four groups, of up to five people each. It will cost $5,500 per group, although individuals prepared to cover the full group fee are welcome to visit on their own. The visits, with certified guides, will last up to two hours: from 7am9am local time, just before the site opens, or 8pm-10pm, after it closes. The new ticket policy will include a 50% increase in prices for ordinary Acropolis tickets, from about $22 to $33, although the number of free entry days during the winter will be doubled to two a month. Dominating the Athens skyline, the Acropolis and its 2,500-year-old marble monuments—including the Parthenon temple—is Greece’s most-visited ancient site. Amid a surge of tourist arrivals in the country, it attracted more than 3 million people in 2022. The press of up to 23,000 daily visitors drove the Culture Ministry in September to announce caps on entry numbers and other restrictions starting in 2024. 4 Shop In RI

There’s a Fresh Geyser Mystery Elton John, Bernie Taupin Win in ’Incredible Honor’ Yellowstone It’s unclear why the Steamboat Geyser had a record year

It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. This Was Most-Watched Streaming Original in 2023

But even Ted Lasso, which was viewed for a total of 16.9 billion minutes, couldn’t crack the 10 most-viewed titles on streaming services, a list dominated by “library” titles, Deadline reports. Suits topped the list, with 57.7 billion viewing minutes on Netflix and Peacock, followed by Bluey, with 43.9 billion viewing minutes on Disney+. It was a similar story with movies. Moana, which came out in 2016, was top of the list with 11.6 billion viewing minutes on Disney+. “Originals are sprinters, like Usain Bolt getting that quick run, and the acquired titles are more distance runners,” Fuhrer says.

Nielsen exec Brian Fuhrer says Ted Lasso was such a big hit that he initially thought an error had occurred at the ratings company. The series was the most-watched original series on a streaming service last year, though its maker, Apple TV+, has fewer viewers than any other service Nielsen measures. ”Even though Apple TV+ didn’t have the biggest footprint, a lot of people have either watched it multiple times or they’ve had more people come into their viewing pool and watch it,” Fuhrer tells the Hollywood Reporter. The sports comedydrama is the first non-Netflix series to take the top spot in the four years Nielsen has been releasing streaming rankings.

The 2023 Stars of the Industry

President/CEO, RI Hospitality Association (RIHA)

The red carpet was unfurled once again at the Providence Performing Arts Center for a night of grandeur and recognition, to celebrate the very best of Rhode Island’s hospitality community at the RI Hospitality Association’s 33rd Annual Stars of the Industry event. On Wednesday, December 6th, more than 700 attendees gathered to honor colleagues, family, and friends, and enjoy a night of comradery and community. Black-tie optional, award recipients dazzled in their finest attire, adding a touch of elegance and individual flair to the evening’s festivities. This year’s ceremony was a sight to behold. A specially crafted runway framed the historic theater’s stage, hinting at the glamour and excitement that awaited. A special performance by Massachusettsnative and former ‘The Voice’ contestant, Sam James, kicked off the night. A talented singer and songwriter, Sam performed his own original music, as well as songs co-written for music greats Dolly Parton and Lee Brice. The room was filled with anticipation, as attendees applauded fellow winners, and eagerly awaited their names to be called. Eighty four awards were presented in categories ranging from best bartenders, chefs, and restaurants, to hoteliers, valets, and tourism partners. There were also special awards for “Man/Woman of the Year” and the “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Following the awards ceremony, the stage transformed into a vibrant hub of celebration. A unique invitation awaited guests to step onto the stage itself, where mingling with award recipients and catching up with colleagues continued for hours. McGrath Catering, plus 14 member restaurants, tantalized palates with incredible food stations, and WRIK Entertainment elevated the ambiance, creating an unforgettable postceremony experience. 8 Shop In RI

There is not enough space to name each award winner individually because there’s just too much talent! You can find the complete list of this year’s winners at: www.rihospitality.org/RIHA-Stars-Award-Winners. In a small state like Rhode Island, chances are you’ll spot someone familiar, or are connected to someone you know on that list! Although many are nominated and win an award each year, there are countless others who shine brightly in their own roles, within the hospitality community. To everyone who has done their part to make the industry the vibrant and crucial cornerstone of Rhode Island’s culture and economy, you are offered heartfelt appreciation. Until we meet again, may your light continue to illuminate the path to excellence!

PORK TENDERLOIN SOUP WITH CHICKPEAS AND KALE

Pork tenderloin is a lean cut of meat that can dry out easily when roasted. It’s usually just a couple of inches around, and over a foot long…a shape that can easily go from juicy to overdone in just a few minutes if you’re not watching it carefully. This recipe really is based on what I had in the fridge and pantry at the time, and it just rocked! I chose chickpeas as my starch. I don’t worry too much about carbs, as long as they’re good ones and in moderation. I always use organic kale. Kale is one of the most heavily sprayed veggies out there. You don’t need pesticides in your soup! The soup is gluten-free if you use gluten-free flour instead of regular all purpose flour.

Unveiling the Blueprint for Your Timeless Transformation in the New Year! By Kevin Kearns

Greetings to the distinguished 40+, 50+, and 60+ crowd in the Rhode Island and Boston area, those whose aspirations for the New Year transcend the ordinary. The burning question emerges: “Coach Kearns, how do I achieve enduring results? What should my fitness program entail?” Firstly, let’s establish that your program must be effective, efficient, and, above all, safe for you. Tailoring it to your unique needs is paramount. If, for instance, you haven’t lifted weights in decades, but aspire to shed 40 lbs, hurling weights recklessly isn’t the answer. At Burn with Kearns, we advocate for building the basement – laying a strong foundation through a safe and scientific approach, ensuring your fitness journey endures. Let’s delve into building the basement. The core, often oversimplified, is a complex ensemble of muscles. Picture a line from your right shoulder to left hip and its reverse

on the other side. This encompasses the abdominals, lower back, rib cage muscles, gluteal muscles, and scapular muscles. It’s not just about crunches; it’s about a holistic approach. Think of it as investing $5000 in the foundation, before spending $100,000 on the roof. Without a robust core, you can’t throw a punch, swing a golf club, or even take a step confidently. Introducing our exclusive “Core Killer” – a set of exercises used by 15 UFC fighters, NFL athletes, NBA athletes, college hockey, and even actors like Kevin James. If it works for them, it will work for you! These drills, adaptable to weight plates, medicine balls, dumbbells, or even a patio brick, target not just your abs, but also crucial stabilizers and neutralizers. You won’t feel the burn like traditional crunches, but you’ll experience a holistic engagement vital for everyday life.

Allow me to share a real-life testament to the power of core strength. Twelve weeks before a crucial fight, UFC fighter Kenny Florian faced a potential career-ending back injury. Thanks to a robust core built over 18 months, he not only recovered, but triumphed in the ring. The transverse plane of motion, often overlooked in conventional workouts, played a pivotal role in preventing injuries and ensuring his victory. As we venture into the new year, I’ll be your guide in a series of articles, unlocking the missing pieces to elevate and perpetuate your fitness journey. Why, you ask? Because it’s my mission to assist individuals like yourself in achieving and sustaining the best shape of your life. Stay relentless, Be relentless in the design of your life! Coach Kearns

Keeping Hydrated During Wintertime Is Crucial to Good Health

By Stacie Venagro | 2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro

In the winter months, the importance of drinking water cannot be overstated. As temperatures drop and the air becomes drier, our bodies are more susceptible to dehydration. Despite the common misconception that hydration is primarily a concern in hot weather, staying well-hydrated during winter is equally crucial for overall health.

temperature. Cold weather can prompt the body to work harder to maintain its core temperature, leading to increased respiratory water loss. Staying hydrated ensures that the body can efficiently regulate temperature, reducing the risk of hypothermia. In winter, dry skin is a common complaint, and hydration plays a key role in skin health. Water helps moisturize the skin from the inside out, combating the effects of cold winds and indoor heating systems that can strip the skin of its natural moisture.

Furthermore, proper hydration supports joint FOR TICKETS: text 489-8839 or call Thirsty Beaver health, which is crucial270-7686 when colder temperatures During colder months, the air tends to be drier both outdoors and indoors due to heating systems. This dry environment can lead to increased water loss through breathing and skin evaporation. Additionally, people often indulge in warm beverages like coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, which may contribute to fluid loss if not balanced with an adequate intake of water. Proper hydration supports various bodily functions, including maintaining a healthy immune system. Dehydration can compromise the immune system’s ability to fend off illnesses, which is particularly problematic during a season when colds and flu are prevalent. Dynamic Thoughts By: Dr. Pete Dionisopoulos, PT, DPT One of the biggest mistakes people make when they start getting into activities is not dedicating time for a quality warm-up. Avoidance of this can lead to potential nagging aches and easily avoidable pains, forcing you to be inconsistent and derailing your performance goals. A warm-up isn’t just about getting a little blood flow. It is targeted to your exercises by priming the body in various ranges of motion, and preparing the tissues for increased stress. Our warm-ups should be progressive by starting slow, and then moving to near full intensity of the activities we will perform for the day. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. Being targeted allows you to be more timeefficient and better prepared. You wouldn’t warm up for a run by doing quick stretches and lifting weights before going out. You would want to do some running-specific drills, like marching or skipping that involves running mechanics. The other great thing about a proper warmup is that it can be a time to address some deficiencies in movement patterns, while you are fresh and moving at lower intensities. This is a game changer when you become fatigued and fall into bad habits. The warm-up can help facilitate better movement patterns and be more efficient and fatigue-resistant, furthering your ability to stay less injury-prone.

Sports and Injuries By: Susan Gazerro I was listening to the news, and they mentioned that a female athlete received a serious face injury, when a male on the opposing team, accidently hit her with a puck, during a field hockey game. This started me thinking about sports and injuries. It is very common to hear about runners having knee issues or hip issues, but I also knew that there were many more we don’t like to talk about. In my research, I found the top 7 sports that cause the most injuries, for which I will write in detail about each one. So, it’s pretty well known that there are 7 sports that may cause more injuries to players than others. These 7 include basketball, football, soccer, baseball/softball, ice hockey, snow skiing/snowboarding, and believe it or not, golf! Would you believe that basketball causes the most injuries? More than 26 million young adults, ranging in age from 12 to 17, 24 Shop In RI 24 Shop In RI

play basketball, but injuries happen for all ages playing this sport. Roughly 260,000 players were treated for injuries in the United States in 2021. When playing basketball, it is recommended that eye protection is worn, as well as elbow and knee pads, and it is also recommended that a mouthguard be worn. Basketball players should also engage in strength training to avoid injuries, and will be more protected than those players who are not in their full strength capacity. The next sport, which I was not shocked to learn was on the list is football. Football injuries can happen at any level, but they are very common in teenagers. In 2021, more than 220,000 Americans were treated for injuries related to football. When playing football, it is recommended to wear all pads and other safety equipment related to the game. It is also recommended that one warms up properly before playing. For children and teens, they should be trained and educated about proper

tackling techniques, and most definitely be told and taught to limit head contact. I was a little surprised to hear that soccer has a lot of contact and collisions’ injuries. More than 140,000 people show up in U.S. emergency rooms because of soccer injuries, each year. Did you know that collision or contact sports, such as soccer, football, basketball, and baseball, account for about 80% of all sports-related emergency room visits for children ages 5 to 14. Soccer is a sport in which “heading” is involved. The coaches need to make sure they are teaching the kids how to properly use their head to strike or make a play with a ball. I personally don’t think “heading” should be involved in any sport. There is more and more data showing TBI (traumatic brain injuries) are caused from “heading” in sports. The fourth sport I read about was baseball/ softball. Baseball and softball are risky sports people play at a young age, and continue to play, recreationally, as they get older. More than 116,000 people were treated for baseball and softball injuries in U.S. emergency rooms in 2021. It is important to wear all safety equipment, such as a batting helmet, shin and elbow guards, and also detachable bases. Warm up before playing. Stretch your muscles and get your heart rate up before you play ball, to help reduce the risk of being injured. The fifth, which was another one I was not surprised to see on the list, is ice hockey. Ice hockey causes the most concussions of any other sport. Activities involving skating, including ice hockey, land fifth on the list of sports-causing injuries. Nearly 70,000 skating injuries are treated in the emergency room, each year. This is another sport in which head contact should be as limited as possible. I was a bit surprised that ice hockey ranked higher for head injuries, even over football,

but that is what the data shows. The sixth sport on the report was most surprising to me. I did not expect to see golf on the list, but it apparently causes injuries, and is more dangerous than it would seem. Even though golf isn’t a contact sport, it still results in nearly 60,000 injuries, each year. What’s more shocking is that golf is responsible for more injuries than rugby. Many injuries involve golf carts and errant golf balls, in addition to stress and overuse of the body, when one does have an injury. This is one of those sports, where it’s not about contact, but it is about overusing muscle groups, and a small injury can lead to a more severe injury, over time. I was also surprised to learn that snow skiing and snowboarding have the lowest rate of injury, compared to the other six sports mentioned. Although skiing and snowboarding are perceived by some as risky sports, the rate of injury is lower than many more popular sports on this list. Still, these activities result in roughly 57,000 injuries each year. Snowboarding has a higher rate of injury than skiing, but skiing can result in more serious injuries. The best protection with these two sports is to always wear a helmet. Sports is the “American Way,” and for most, even if we aren’t playing, we love watching. Just remember to be safe! Kendall Reiss Gallery & Studio Artist, Entrepreneur & Gallery Owner by L.A.Reilly Photos by L.A.Reilly & Jen Lial

A native of Bristol, Rhode Island, Kendall Reiss grew up exploring the rocky shoreline of Narragansett Bay. She attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA where she received a BS in Geology, which provided the visual training and hands-on approach she now uses as an artist and educator. After studying at several prominent institutions including the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Kendall returned to school to combine her fascination of the natural world with the study of jewelry. In 2011, she received a MFA in Jewelry + Metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design. International presentations of her work include: Finnish jewelry triennial, KORU8 with exhibitions at The Finnish Forest Museum Lusto in Punkaharju and The Oulu Art Museum, Finland in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Her work was exhibited in Jewelry & Nature at Tincal Lab in Porto, Portugal, as well as nationally for New York City Jewelry Week, at the Baltimore Jewelry Center, Greenville Center for Creative Arts, Bristol Art Museum, and Haskell Public Gardens. Kendall will present her ongoing research project, BEING [with] TREES at the College Art Association annual conference in a panel led by curator Martina Tanga; Learning from Trees: Artists & Climate Solutions. Kendall lives in Bristol, Rhode Island

where she owns and operates the local arts initiative, Kendall Reiss Gallery & Studio. Located at 469 Wood Street in Bristol, RI, the business focuses on exhibiting the work of contemporary artists and jewelers, offers private instruction and small group classes in jewelry making and metalworking, in addition to serving as Kendall’s studio. Art activism and community focused projects have become an important aspect of Kendall’s practice. Notably, Research BIPOC History, a grassroots effort dedicated to researching, recognizing, and honoring the history, humanity, and contributions of the enslaved people who resided in Bristol, RI from the towns founding in 1680 to the Civil War.

LA: You have a Bachelor of Science in Geology, when did you start having an interest in this field? KR: When I went to undergrad, I went to a liberal arts school and I was interested in art and I’ve always been a student of the natural world. I’m an observer, a collector of little things that I might find and I’ve always been curious about nature. When I went to college I had a lot of questions about how this planet is here; what’s underneath our feet, how soil is produced, how trees come along etc. I took an oceanography class and I started with the marine part of it and it answered a lot of bigger questions that I had. How do these systems work like the tides and currents? When I was an undergrad I did a semester at sea and I went abroad on a 135 foot long “Schooner” I learned not only about boats and nautical maritime history, but also about science. There was a lab on the boat I’ve always been asking questions. LA: You went back to school to study jewelry in 2011 and received a MFA in jewelry and metalsmithing from RISD. Your work has been showcased around the globe, what is your favorite type of jewelry to design ? KR: Right now, the thing that really gets me excited as an artist has been working with glass doing glass casting. It’s not wearable jewelry but work that’s based on my ongoing research I’ve been doing around old growth trees in Bristol and all over the world. I’ve been making these glass tablets that reference necklaces. I do both jewelry and work with glass tiles. Because I’m a full time professor at Tufts University, this means I also have to keep up a research practice. I really like teaching casting classes. Students are working across a lot of different materials and are learning different skills in casting and mold making that would apply to jewelry. I’m more of an interdisciplinary artist and community organizer. We got a substantial grant from Tufts to support a project I’ve been working on in Bristol for the last four years. There are a lot of things that tie into my creative and artistic practice that aren’t necessarily jewelry. LA: Tell me about your ongoing research project called “Being (with) Trees” at the College Art Association. KR: This is a presentation that I will be giving with six different artists. The College Art Association is a long standing organization. They have an annual conference and this year it’s in Chicago which is an opportunity for

34 Shop In RI

me to present my work that I’ve been doing like the glass casting pieces. During the pandemic I taught a class called “Relational Placemaking”. The assignment for students was they had to choose one place wherever they were. People were from all over the globe. They had to go somewhere outdoors weekly and connect with it, record it, document it and think about what it meant to them as an artist. I did projects locally in Bristol. The trees were really the focus of this project and got me thinking about the lifespan of the trees, who it would have known and what would have been in its lifetime. I self-published a book for people weekly about a tulip tree that I love near Linden place. It was available for people walking by it was in a book box that they could just take. They were highly popular. We did a workshop with a photographer from Boston. She taught us a process called “Anthotype” using pigment from plants to make photographic prints. I use parts of the trees to make impressions and then create the castings. A couple of the pieces are going to Finland they’re accepted into a major exhibition

LA: You are a very busy woman along with owning a gallery, you also teach locally and nationally at RISD and museums. You are currently a professor of the Practice of Metals at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. Tell me about this. KR: It’s a school within a school, we are within the school of Arts and Sciences, but the Museum School, SMFA, has been in existence since the 1800s. SMFA is a very unique. There are no majors. Students major in studio art. They don’t focus on one thing which is great because it’s very broad and we can use all different techniques and materials. I started in 2012 part time after grad school, then I was a full time visiting artist for two years. In 2018 I applied for and was offered a full time position. Tufts is a Research-1 University. They support faculty and have great opportunities for different ways to support my practice. I’m an artist and also a business person. In the spring I’m teaching a class called “Art Entrepreneurship”, which helps students to be problem solvers. As a professor of metals I teach soldering. Starting with sheet metals and wires and fabricating to make sculptures and jewelry. In terms of hands-on skill building it’s traditional metal smithing techniques. I teach a casting class as well

LA: Tell me about your gallery and how you came about opening it and when did you open? Your business focuses on exhibiting the work of contemporary artists and Jewelers? You also offer private instruction and small group classes in jewelry making and metal working, when your classes offered and what type of jewelry can people make? KR: I bought this building seven years ago. Wood Street is booming so we have a really great spot. I teach classes here and right now I have one remarkable student that I am working with she wants to learn all about jewelry making I do a lot of community workshops in town as well . LA: Tell me the difference between jewelry making and metalworking. KR: Metalworking is very specific to a material. We work with copper, bronze, silver and gold. Jewelry making is more open-ended. You’re not working with just one material, you work with wood, glass and mica. Metal is not necessarily used. LA: Tell me about your current showing “Shiny Things”. It features works of 30 contemporary Jewelers and artists. this exhibit goes to January 14th. So people can buy the art and jewelry at your studio? Also how do artists get to be showcased at your gallery? KR: Everything is for sale, this show was by invitation only. They are a group of artists that I curated myself and brought in based on how the work would all show together and also a range of pieces both in prices and materials and wearability styles. For the last eight weeks the shows been up it’s been so great to connect with people. You can come to the gallery, show me what you make and if it would be a great fit I would think about it but I specifically look for work that is contemporary and you can’t find anywhere else. I want to show emerging artists. I want to support students who are getting an opportunity for the first time to get their work out in the public.

KR: I’m in shock about Finland and it happens once every three years since 2003. KORU means jewelry in Finnish. In Europe they have a National Finished Jewelry Association. It’s an exhibition, symposium and workshop. First it will take place in a forest museum. In June there will lectures and hands on workshops. 450 people applied to the show, 49 got accepted and I was 1 out of 3 people from the United states that got accepted. I feel very grateful. LA: Do you have a favorite piece of jewelry that you ever made that you couldn’t part with? KR: All of them! I have made things over the years that I loved but this ring I’m wearing I would never sell. I got the gem in Peru at a marketplace and I would never get rid of it. LA: Lastly, when you are not busy with your gallery, making jewelry ,teaching classes, what do you like to do for fun? You must have a favorite restaurant in Bristol. KR: I have my dog Bubba, he’s a great excuse for me to get out and about. I love to go walking and hiking with him and I love to see other art shows, I love music and food. I love O’Brien and Brough for a drink and for food I’d say Bywater in Warren. Kendall Reiss Gallery & Studio: 469 Wood Street, Bristol Website: Kendallreiss.com Phone: 401-662-7935 kendalreiss@gmail.com IG:@Kendall.a.reiss FB@KRGallery and Studio

LA: You have an upcoming exhibit in two different museums in Finland that runs to 2025 called “KORU8”. Tell me about this and how you got involved. The theme is forests and that they play a crucial role in climate change.

Seek Answers to These Five Basic Life Insurance Questions By: Edward Pontarelli Jr. Life insurance is an important part of a well-rounded financial plan. While it can be an emotionally difficult topic to contemplate, life insurance provides a degree of protection for loved ones, in the event of a death. 1

Most adults who have dependents who rely on them should have life insurance coverage. The challenge is determining what amount of coverage is right for you. If you already have life insurance in place, is it sufficient to meet your family’s unique needs? Here are five questions you can ask yourself to help assess the types and levels of life insurance you should have in place to protect your loved ones. #1 – Who do I want to protect? Life insurance’s primary purpose is to provide financial resources to those who are left behind. If you have a spouse, partner, children, or others who are dependent on the income you generate, your death may leave a significant financial gap, unless you have the right protections in place. Start by assessing the difference it would make, not just this year, but over the long term, if you were no longer around. If you are past your working years, you might consider whether life insurance can play a role in protecting your estate. #2 – What expenses need to be covered by life insurance proceeds? Start with non-discretionary expenses such as your home, debts that need to be repaid, living expenses like food costs, and childcare expenses. You may also want to consider non-discretionary expenses such as money for extracurricular activities and vacations. Beyond that, it’s important that a surviving spouse or partner can continue to save, to meet key goals like retirement or a child’s education. Determine annual expenses and then account for how many years you want to be certain that those expenses are covered. If you are at or near retirement, you may want to determine if insurance is needed to provide liquidity for the dissolution of your estate. #3 – What type of life insurance makes sense for me? There are different types of life insurance. The simplest and typically least expensive form is term insurance, which provides a death benefit for a set period of years. You can also consider “permanent” forms of life insurance that provide a death benefit and can have an investment component or cash value benefit. These policies will be 36 Shop In RI

costlier than term insurance, but may be more suitable, depending on your circumstances. #4 – Are there riders I should add to my policy? Life insurance riders allow you to tailor your policy to meet certain needs. These can range from premium coverage if you should become disabled, protection against accidental death and dismemberment, or even coverage to pay for expenses related to long-term care needs. #5 – Is my current coverage adequate? If you already have life insurance in place, it’s important to review coverage, periodically, to account for changes in your life. For starters, answer the questions listed above. A thorough review of all your protection needs can help ensure that you have the most appropriate protection solutions in place. Discussing these questions, and others you have, with a financial advisor, can help you assess the most effective life insurance strategy for your circumstances. Four Strategies to Maximize Your Charitable Giving By: Carrie McPherson Many investors care deeply about giving back to their communities, and they often do so through traditional monetary gifts. 1 While cash can be an easy and convenient vehicle to support your favorite nonprofits, there are other gifting strategies that may help maximize the value of your generosity and provide tax advantages. Here’s an overview on four strategies that may be worth exploring. Gift highly appreciated stocks or other assets If you hold stocks or other investments for more than one year that have gained value, you may consider liquidating the asset to make a charitable donation with the proceeds. However, doing so may result in a taxable long-term capital gain. One potentially more efficient way to maximize the value of your donation is to give appreciated stock directly to a qualified charity. The charity would receive an asset it can continue to hold or immediately sell, and you would not generate taxable income from a sale of the asset prior to the donation. Additionally, the market value of the stock at the time the gift is made is generally deductible from your adjusted gross income, if you itemize your deductions (subject to income-based limitations). Check to ensure the charity accepts this type of donation before exploring it as a financial strategy. Establish a charitable trust Another way to consider gifting assets is to set up a charitable trust. Trusts can help you manage highly appreciated assets in a more tax-efficient manner, while in some cases, allowing you to split assets among charitable and non-charitable beneficiaries. The timing of each gift and the flexibility you want dictates the type of trust that works best. With a Charitable Lead Trust, a charity is funded with income from assets placed in the trust for a specified time period. After that time, the remaining assets revert to other named beneficiaries, such as your heirs. In a Charitable Remainder Trust, the reverse occurs. The trust makes regular income payments back to you or another beneficiary. After a period of time specified in the trust, the remaining assets are directed to the named charities. These trusts have specific rules and are generally established through a professional. An alternative option is to choose a donor-advised fund, which allows you to make a large donation that may be immediately deductible from taxes but gives you the flexibility to recommend gifts to charities spread out over a period of years. Work with your attorney or tax professional for additional information on what may be appropriate for your circumstances. Maximize donations through your employer Workplace giving campaigns are becoming increasingly popular. Your employer may offer the convenience of making contributions through payroll deductions, allowing you to give systematically with each paycheck. In addition, your employer may 38 Shop In RI

match a certain donation amount, which can add to the impact your gift makes. If you have access to these or other workplace giving programs, check to see if the charities you care about are eligible to receive this type of donation. Make a charitable individual retirement account (IRA) donation If you have reached age 70 ½, or wish to wait until the age at which you are required to take distributions from your traditional IRA each year, but you don’t need the money to meet your essential and lifestyle expenses, you may prefer to avoid the resulting tax bill. An alternative is to take advantage of the Qualified Charitable Distribution rule. It allows you to transfer funds directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization. This is a tax-efficient way to shift up to $100,000 in 2023, or up to $105,000 in 2024, out of an IRA. By doing so, you may avoid having to claim income (and subsequent tax liability) since you would not receive the required distribution. If you have not yet reached the age at which you are required to take distributions, you may want to consider this strategy as part of your retirement plan. To determine when required distributions will start for you (based on your birth year), visit IRS.gov.

Meet The Dream Team: Bob Crudale Each month, Shop in RI Magazine profiles one member of a growing business networking group called, “The Dream Team” that meets weekly in Smithfield. This month, we feature Bob Crudale of Amazing Specialties in Cranston.

“It doesn’t even have to be a customer, but someone may be just having a conversation and says, ‘hey do you know someone that…Yes, I’ve got a guy for you.’ It’s like having 20-plus extra sales people doing your bidding.

Bob has been with his company for five decades. He provides clients with promotional items and services. He can either create, design or even find that special way to get a business or event in front of customers.

“I wouldn’t give up my seat at the Dream Team for anything,” Crudale said.

He has an array of products ranging from the typical mugs, office supplies and clothing (such as shirts with company logos embroidered) to items commemorating special events such as grand openings and milestones. Bob has created a great business model that focuses on one core value: “My secret to success has been providing efficient and effective customer service,” Crudale said. “I can get orders into my vendors and get them processed rather quickly. I can also offer discounts from my vendors that help keep clients happy. Although the times have changed, people are still in the market to get their names out there.”

For more details about Bob and his services, please contact him either by phone at 401-3693644, email him at amazingspecialty@aol.com or visit the website at www.amazingspecialties. com. “The Dream Team” currently has 20 members. They meet every Wednesday morning, from 7:00 AM until 8:30 AM, at the Home2Suites Hilton on Douglas Pike (Rte. 7) in Smithfield, across from Laura’s Bar and Grill. The group is looking to grow its chapter and is interested in meeting professionals from various industries, including HVAC, event planning, personal injury attorneys, and photography. Further information about the group may be found by contacting either President Rocco Elgar at 401-265-0857 or at therockhbi@msn.com, or Vice President Tim Richard at 401-766-4200 or at tim@estenandrichardinsurance.com.

The reason for Bob joining the Dream Team is having the opportunity to meet many other business people that become their sales people. Every time each one of these members of the Dream Team are out seeing their customers and the customer mentions a need, there’s another member in the group that most likely can fulfill that need, he said. Garage Headquarters Celebrates Five Decades of Service Established in 1973, the company has grown and developed into a diversified family owned- group of enterprises. By Mark Berger Warwick-based Garage Headquarters Companies recently announced their milestone 50th anniversary of serving Rhode Island and Massachusetts clients in all their residential, commercial, and industrial door projects’ needs. For the last nearly 20 years, they have expanded to several spin-off companies to better serve their customers and communities in the region and nationally.

Garage Headquarters founder James Grace (far left), Residential Sales Specialist Denise Zanni (second from left), company President Scott Grace (second from right), and Architectural Team Coordinator Rachanda Miller (far right) celebrate at the company’s gala on November 3rd.

Garage Headquarters President Scott Grace said that the company’s longevity is the result of their ability to listen, evolve, and adjust to the ever-changing needs of its increasing roster of customers, while keeping a strong corporate team culture.

A series of recognitions marked the anniversary milestone, including citations from Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee. At an anniversary celebration event, Overhead Door Corporation executives in attendance said that the significance of reaching such a milestone was not lost on them.

“Our team is the backbone of our success in developing new dynamic solutions to the evolving needs of our customers,” he said. “Regardless of whether a team member started working with us 50 years ago, or simply a few months back, the professionalism, loyalty, and eye for detail are seen in everything we do, individually, and as a team.”

“Fifty years do not happen every day with our distributors,” said Jeremy Harris, Vice President and General Manager of Overhead Door Corporation. “This is a true accomplishment, and we truly appreciate everything the Grace Team does and its partnership with the Overhead Door Corporation.”

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The company’s beginning started out of necessity. Jim Grace worked in the building materials industry growing up and held a senior leadership position with a regional lumberyard. In 1973, Jim learned of an opportunity to lead a Rhode Island distributorship for the Overhead Door Corporation. That distributorship was Overhead Door Company of Providence, based in Warwick, RI. A decade passed before Jim purchased a neighboring Overhead Door Corporation distributorship in New Bedford. The distributorship extended the company’s service area by expanding from Rhode Island out to the Bourne Bridge, the gateway to Cape Cod, MA.

In 2015, the expansion continued as the parent company founded DoorWall Systems Corporation, a company focused on custom high-end commercial and institutional architectural doors. The company has innovated a patented door that has been a basis of design for construction projects across the country from California to Massachusetts, including a recent installation in Manhattan.

COMMUNITY

This custom logo ice sculpture, marking the 50th Anniversary of Garage Headquarters, was displayed at the company’s gala, held at the Quidnessett Country Club.

Nearly two decades later, in 2004, their reach expanded into Boston, with the launch of Overhead Door Company of Southeastern Massachusetts.

The company is also no stranger to community service. Garage Headquarters Companies supports several charities, including The McAuley House in Providence, which helps feed the homeless and offer assistance to battered women and their children. Also, the Ron Burton Training Village in Hubbardston, MA, which helps provide character building in the inner cities. For additional details about the company, please visit their website at www.garageheadquarters. com, or you can reach out to Scott Grace directly at sgrace@ohd.com.

In 2005, after over a decade of sales and leadership positions with IBM, Scott Grace returned to lead the company and its future regional and national expansion. “We went from a local player in Warwick, Rhode Island back in ‘73, and with our great people, investments and innovation, we now have a presence throughout North America,” Grace said.

GARAGE HEADQUARTERS IS BORN Garage Headquarters was born as result of a new diversified set of companies and products to better serve the market beyond the Overhead Door Corporation brand. In 2006, the company launched Specified Building Products Corporation. The new enterprise produces and installs custom fire and smoke resistant doors. Some notable clients include Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, the University of Rhode Island’s College of Engineering, and Novartis in Cambridge, MA. Shop In RI 43

Ask An Expert

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www. LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@ LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column!

Egress Windows Many folks often daydream about the types of home improvements that they would like to see occur in their home, if they had the opportunity to do so. At the top of the list, more times than not, is to “finish” the basement. Thoughts of having a ‘Man Cave,’ or shifting an older child to their own lair and the like, are quite enticing, and typically serve as the catalyst which ignites these visions. Although pricey (as with seemingly everything else in life), when comparing the cost of finishing a basement to that of just a few years ago, for those with an unfinished basement, the benefits of incorporating one into the fabric of one’s home is still enormously tempting. For those brave enough and in the position to make it happen, when taking the leap toward doing so, there are a number of items to keep in mind. Certainly, there are height requirements and other regulations and guidelines, which locally may vary from one community to another. Along with all of the planning that comes with this type of project, one of the biggest items of focus tends to be egress direction that would be dictated by the local building official (remember, the more local the building code, the more it takes precedence!). While varying in their design, bulkheads are one means of egress that are very common. In addition to a bulkhead [or in some instances, in lieu of (again, depending on the demands of local code)], one option for egress is the ‘egress window’. The egress window is a window that is installed in one’s home that, literally, allows egress to the exterior. Though basements tend to be the most common area that they are used in, they can be utilized in other areas, as well. An egress window looks like a large regular window, but it opens large enough to allow the inhabitants of the space to escape in the event of a fire. Local building officials should be consulted to double check how large the window space actually needs to be, as you are planning the project. There is MUCH involved when embarking on the project of installing an egress window. While it can definitely differ from project to project, here are examples of what we see usually involved, when installing an egress window:

↳ Window needs to be ordered at the appropriate sizes ↳ Area outside of window properly dug out ↳ Foundation needs to be cut, and the hole prepped, to receive a window ↳ Window installed ↳ Finish trim installed around exterior of window ↳ Hole that was dug is backfilled ↳ Window well installed in hole (we always custommake these with steel, and depending on the situation, may need to incorporate a ladder into the fabrication, as well) ↳ Crushed stone placed in bottom of hole that was dug ↳ Interior finish work done around window, with the intention of making the window appear as of it had always been there As you can see, the process is a bit involved. When working through this procedure, it is important that a local building official is involved to make sure that what is done meets egress code. Finished basements are definitely fantastic features in the homes of many, ensuring proper egress though is not only prudent, but an essential part of the process that should be well thought out, and embedded into the overall game plan.

A Rhode Island Love Story of Legend by Paul Lonardo

hey say that love was the reason the Taj Mahal was built, but what about the construction of a 2½ story mansion made of fieldstone situated in Lincoln, Rhode Island?

Claudius II, who issued an edict prohibiting the marriage of young people. His decree was based on the belief that unmarried soldiers fought better because they did not have families to worry about.

The love story behind Hearthside House, like other legendary stories of love, is rife romanticized elements that no one really questions. The stories are often just accepted as fact. People just seem to enjoy a good love story, especially around Valentine’s Day, a “holiday” whose own history is bound in myth.

Though forbidden to conduct marriage ceremonies, Saint Valentine did so anyway, and he was eventually imprisoned for his actions. According to the legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the blind daughter of his jailer. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter and signed it, “Your Valentine.” While no one can be certain of these accounts, it no longer seems to matter as chocolates, flowers, and especially Valentine’s cards continue to be exchanged in many countries around the world on February 14th each year.

While Saint Valentine himself has become canonized as the official patron saint of lovers, this third century Roman priest was known for performing Christian weddings for soldiers during the reign of Emperor 56 56 Shop Shop In In RI RI

The story about how Hearthside House came to be has all the elements of any other fable of love. The popular folktale surrounding Hearthside House begins with its construction in the early 1800’s, when Stephen Hopkins Smith was courting a young woman of means from Providence. Making it all the more mysterious, no one even seems to know the woman’s exact name or very much else about her. The love-bitten Smith did not see the difference in social status as an obstacle. While he was a member of a noted Lincoln, RI family and lived a comfortable life, he was far from wealthy. He was a Quaker, who lived a simple lifestyle.

front entrance pillars supporting a top floor balcony, and each of the ten rooms in the mansion boasting its own fireplace, hence the name by which it would come to be known; Hearthside House. The magnificent home was located in an area of farm land in Lincoln on pastoral Great Road, the first traversable tract through the wilderness between Providence and Mendon, Massachusetts, and one of the oldest thoroughfares in America.

It is believed that the woman was more than a little cautious about any future with Smith and told him this directly. Accordingly, she revealed to him that she enjoyed spending time with him but in a suitor, she was looking for someone of substantial wealth who could provide her with the lifestyle she was used to.

Smith continued his courtship of the woman through the four years of construction, never letting on what he was building so that it would be a surprise sufficient to capture her heart. When the home was finally complete, he took a horse and buggy out to Providence and asked his sweetheart to come along with him for a ride. He was excited as they approached the bend of Great Road, but when the woman first laid her eyes on the mansion she clapped her hands together and exclaimed, “What a beautiful house! But who would ever want to live way out in the wilderness.”

Then one day, as if in answer to his prayers, Smith won a lottery. He netted an estimated jackpot of $40,000, the equivalent of about $9 million in today’s money.

Smith was heartbroken. It is believed that he drove her back to Providence that day and never called on her again. At least, that is the story that has been told through the years.

Keeping his winnings a secret from the woman he hoped to marry, Smith schemed to build a breathtaking home to sweep her off her feet. What is not in dispute is that construction on Hearthside got underway in 1810 and was completed in 1814. The stately mansion was considered to be one of the finest examples of early 19th century federal-style architecture in the state, unique with its curved roofline and totally stone construction. The design included a gable roof with impressive ogee curves above circular attic windows, four wooden

Having failed at romance, Smith put all his effort and energy into his work and career. He built a mill made of stone, similar in appearance and directly across from Hearthside. The manufacturing business he started there, however, was not successful. Stephen Smith died in 1857, a relatively old man for that time, having never married. He was buried in a cemetery a mile from the home he built for a love that never was, while his story continues to live on in historical lore. Shop In RI 57

The Importance of Creating a Loving, Thoughtful, & Memorable Valentine’s Day By Julia Romano

I think we can all agree that the blessed holiday season is a spectacular, yet hectic time. With endless shopping, cooking, and everything else that goes into planning and executing our Christmas and New Year’s traditions, we can now settle down from all of the frenzy, but then, BAM…Valentine’s Day is here, and the cycle of life and making memories continues. On many holidays and throughout the rest of the year, mostly everything we do is to satisfy our families, friends, bosses, and sometimes even strangers, but the Valentine’s Day holiday provides us an opportunity to completely concentrate on that one special person in our lives that consistently dotes on us and brings us the kind of happiness that simply cannot be found in any other of our relationships. As a result, creating what our partner would consider a perfect day, one that honors them and truly expresses our love is very important, and maybe even critical. I say “critical” because the support and happiness our significant other brings to us often goes unnoticed or overlooked throughout the busy year. On this one day out of the other 364 days, we should recognize that it’s necessary to put forth effort into planning something that will express our feelings and reciprocate our adoration. The “something” you plan will depend on several different factors. It’s completely understandable that most men, especially, need a teeny, tiny amount of help with acknowledging the significance of Valentine’s Day, as well as a teeny, tiny amount of help with ideas for 60 Shop In RI

making plans that will impress, and more importantly, express that feeling (you know the feeling, ladies), we all appreciate, and to be honest, need, as females. Now, gentlemen, don’t you panic! A woman’s expectations of what you plan is so much more important that the dollar amount it will cost to execute your plan. For many women, the expectations are quite simple. Do you remember the candy hearts that have heartfelt words or phrases imprinted on them? They are still sold today, and were very popular many years ago. I can clearly remember as a young girl how exciting it was to receive these treats from a “crush,” and how all of my friends would giggle and glow with happiness if the one boy they had their heart set on gave them one. The sentiment as an adult is basically the same. We all want to know that the one we love cares as much about us as we do them, and that’s what’s most important and heartwarming. One very important thing to remember is that Valentine’s Day should not cause stress or be a burden. For women, as long as you surprise us with something you typically don’t do, you will have half the battle won. The loving memories come from the thought and romantic sentiment embedded in those plans. It may sound odd, but I believe that there are many men out there who don’t realize that most women are very easy to please. Now, that being said, it may not always be the case where a woman will appreciate the “little things,” but men in those relationships are already aware of this and will likely plan accordingly. Also, there are some men who enjoy spoiling their partner,

and have the funds to do so, but I feel as though the majority of men are with a “typical” woman, one that looks forward to Valentine’s Day to experience the sweet side of their partner. Rember, vocalizing your feelings to that special someone is great, but as the old saying goes, “actions speak louder than words.” Below are some ideas to impress your partner, and to win the other half of the battle of conquering Valentine’s Day. Your special plan for Valentine’s Day can take on so many different ideas and forms. Only you know your better half and what makes them happy within. If you take into account everything you’ve learned about your partner, regardless of if it’s a new relationship or one that has survived, and even thrived over many years, your ideas for Valentine’s Day plans should reflect that amount of time. Here are some ideas to surprise your partner… If you are not one who commonly gives greeting cards to your partner, this may be something that will make them happy. Find one that has words that appropriately expresses everything you feel, but often fail to vocalize. Some women love to receive flowers, and if that’s the case, buy a bouquet, or pick some yourself and put them into a vase, and then add a box of her favorite type of chocolates. Your partner may be someone who dreams about beautiful jewelry, but neither you, nor they, are able to regularly afford to purchase it. Well, here’s where you can make their dream come true…let them know your heart glistens for them and head over to Anthony’s Jewelers in North Providence, where you will get the best and affordable, quality jewelry, as well as something unique and exquisite that is a sparkling treasure they will keep and cherish forever! Below are some fun and unique Valentine’s Day plans that will excite and satisfy your beloved partner: How about creating a charcuterie board/movie night? Charcuterie boards are “all the rage,” and replacing the typical Valentine’s dinner with a DIY charcuterie board night with all of your other half’s favorite goodies will definitely be a ‘hit.’ This idea can be for both partners, as each will find joy and satisfaction munching on the treats they most love. Try some chocolates for a fondue board or burrata for a cheese board, or a combination

of these and so many more yummy treats. You could also make it into a heart-shaped board for even more points! In addition, you could have a special movie ready, one that you wouldn’t commonly watch, but one that you know will entertain your partner. These are two simple ideas that will definitely be considered thoughtful gestures. Plan a spa date. Why not skip a stressful plan for an intricate evening, and try something different like a DIY at-home spa day for two. I’m talking hair masks, foot scrubs, and massages—the whole nine yards. Dim the lights, put the music on in the background, and pamper each other to leave the date in a completely relaxed state of mind. After all, the couple that face-masks together, stays together (hahaha)! Plan a money-free date. Yup, you read that correctly. Get extra creative this year and plan a day full of activities where no money is allowed to be spent. Go for a bike ride or walk, explore a new area you’ve always wanted to go to, have a picnic with the food from your fridge, or do an online yoga class together. The more creative you can get with it, the better. Share some ‘belly laughs’ at a comedy club. Laughing is the medicine perfecting love. When you laugh together it promotes mutual happiness, attraction, and can reduce stress. A night out to an improv or sketch comedy show can help you get out of your head and have some much-needed laughs. On your way home, plan a surprise dinner at your beloved’s favorite restaurant. Recreate your first or your best date/s. (This is one of my personal favorites.) Whether it’s revisiting your first date spot or recreating a dreamy picnic (either on your living room floor or at a romantic park), reminiscing on the giggly, sweet first days of a relationship can bring levity to your relationship. Let your partner know that you remember your first date by planning the same exact experience, from its romantic beginning to end. This is truly a surprise that will warm their heart. Plan their fantasy trip (without the kiddies). Discuss your dream trips and plot out your ideal travel itinerary. Make it fun by taking time to search for Airbnb listings, favorite hotels, restaurants, and activities, and secretly take notes of your partner’s fantasy trip—and then shock your beloved by spontaneously booking this fantasy excursion. I promise, this idea will make for the most exciting and memorable experiences.

General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for their next vehicle will work with their award-winning sales department to take advantage of numerous dealer incentives. “Anyone who trades in either their used or certified, pre-owned cars, will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There won’t be any better time for anyone to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more now than its ever going to be worth.” For those who already own a car or truck, they should visit the dealership’s award-winning service department to keep their vehicles running efficiently. Their highly-trained staff are adept at diagnosing the small problem, before they become major headaches. With lower-than-normal inventory, Durrani said that they are seeking all available used cars, and that there are several incentives designed to get someone from their older car into a newer model. “We are appealing to the public to come in with their used vehicles. Right now, we do not have available inventory to sufficiently fulfill orders,” Durrani said. To help facilitate their need for additional certified, pre-owned vehicles, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether customers decide on purchasing a car from their lot. “We will purchase your trade-in, even if you don’t buy a vehicle from us,” he added. The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Saturday, February 24 and Sunday, February 25, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Attendees will have access to their inventory, and managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives. The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front, and the best available leasing and financing terms also offered up front. Durrani said that this is just part of the allaround, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication. Polar Plunge Was “A Wish Come True”

New Year’s Day event raised $80K with businesses stepping up to help. By Mark Berger The 20th Annual A Wish Come True Polar Plunge raised nearly $80,000 and generated more than 6,000 supporters who braved the water on Easton’s Beach in Newport on January 1st.

wanted to help us and those companies that provided some financial backing to our event and cause. We had many new donors this year. That will aid in our planning for our upcoming events.”

The numerous people and funds raised from the event were both records. Their previous marks were $42,000 raised and 5,000 attendees respectively. Among the beneficiaries were two “Wish Kids” who will be going to Florida with their families. Sofia from Warwick and Graciela from West Kingstown will visit Disney World later this year.

Indeed, there were dozens of local businesses that lent their time and efforts through donations, in-kind services and outreach.

A Wish Come True Executive Director Mary-Kate O’Leary said the outpouring of donations from the public and business communities will help sixteen wish children as well as help their mission moving forward. “It was just a wonderful day all around,” said O’Leary, who appropriately, wore a superhero costume to commemorate the Plunge. “We received the gift of great weather, the outpouring of people who 66 Shop In RI

The event’s Presenting Sponsor, Massey and Associates, had a particular reason for contributing. Owner and Founder Jeff Massey said “The need to support other causes such as A Wish Come True is always great from that perspective. Chief among them is seeing how the mission positively impacts those affected. Plus, it provides a face or a voice to people who may not otherwise give it a second thought.” Massey added the way in which his Warwick-based wealth management firm helps out makes the recent event all the more heartwarming.

“When you see the look on a child’s face, and they are smiling, that is a look that I personally want to see,” he said. “There are many reasons for anyone to contribute to their favorite cause. I started attending these events and realized that our firm could make a valuable contribution to this organization. Part of this event had another inspirational moment. “Wish Kid” Graciela was one of the first people to take the Plunge with her family. There were two great symbolic moments in this: first, if she could brave the water, then anybody could and second, she and her family has the backing of the entire community behind them. Sofia of Warwick, RI, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia back in July of 2022. She is on an aggressive chemo cycle every three weeks to help her fight off the cancer. Sofia loves arts and crafts – especially drawing and painting. She also loves to

shop at Target and play with her dog and bunny! Sofia is excited to spend quality time with her family and make memories in Disney and SeaWorld! Graciela of West Kingston, RI, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. She was a micro-premie and twin survivor, being born at 23 weeks old and weighing 1.2 pounds. She spent the first five months of her life in the NICU. Graciela has had 11 surgeries and countless procedures, including a stem cell transplant at 2 ½ years old. This year, the organization challenged companies and individuals to form teams to raise money. Any team that raised at least $1,000 will be entered to win a $1,500 prize! The group from Laborers District Council and Local 1322 were the recipients of the prize. In the spirit of giving, the group donated the funds back to A Wish Come True! For anyone that missed out on the Plunge, A Wish Come True has another opportunity for the community to get involved. Their annual Shamrocks and Shenanigans event Takes place on Wednesday, March 15, at Venus De Milo, 75 GAR Highway, Swansea, Ma. The festivities begin at 5:30 with dinner starting at 6:00 PM. In addition to dinner and dancing with music provided by Rugburn, there will be a performance by Comedian David Kane. His “Misgivings” show is, “a divine comedy of belly laughs, blessings, blarney and bingo.” Tickets are $45 in advance and $60 sold after February 15th. Tables may be purchased for $500.
