VENISON STEW WITH PUFF PASTRY CLAMS It’s freezing outside. It’s time for some serious comfort food.

Back when I worked in Italian restaurants in New York, we would make a breadcrumb mixture, press it onto a freshly opened whole clam, and then place a small piece of bacon on top before it went into the oven. It was good, but the clam often stuck to the shell, and many people didn’t want to gulp down a whole clam like that. When it was time for me to make my own recipe, I decided that I would chop the clams and mix them into the breadcrumb mix, so that every bite was the same.

The Secret Is Out! Word of Eric Palmieri's Pizza Art Spreads Across the Globe

By: Mark Berger When Eric Palmieri, a third generation pizza maker, decided to try his hand in the family business, he had an idea that he thought might work. That idea was creating specialty pizzas with logos, and designs made to resemble well-known characters from radio, movies, television, and other fields of entertainment.

Working from D. Palmieri’s Bakery, located at 624 Killingly Street in Johnston, Palmieri’s first attempt was an American flag-themed pizza, using toppings and his clever imagination. His vision showed people a new, creative side of baking and enticed them to want more.

The Fourth of July holiday was Palmieri’s first try with his new concept: the flag being made with olives (for the 50 stars) and pepperoni (for the stripes); it was not only festive, but delightfully amusing and delicious. His second idea not only proved to be more popular given the topic, it would also create a feeding sensation that became recognized throughout the country. Staying with his patriotic theme, he created a New England Patriots pizza, complete with the team’s “Elvis” style logo. That pizza sold even more than the American flag because the team is wildly popular in this region.

“People started taking it upon themselves to call up and ask if I could make different designs (after the Pats pizza took off),” said Palmieri. “As I started sharing photos of them on social media, more and more people started asking for them, until eventually, I just started making designs on my own and offering them on my website.”

It was just the beginning! Palmieri had no idea how quickly word had spread about his new and delectable endeavor.

“The initial boost I got was from RI Monthly, who profiled me in February of 2019, and awarded me the Editor’s Pick for ‘Best Party Pizza’ for Best in Rhode Island 2019. That led to inquiries from WJAR-TV (NBC10) and Cat Country’s Maddie Grimaldi (who I made the “Hocus Pocus” Pizza for), who featured me on the “Studio 10” program. It was after that when WPRI came to do the story,” shared Palmieri. “So, WPRI-TV, Channel 12, was nice enough to come to the bakery and film me making one of my pizzas: the “Elf on the Shelf,” he continued.

WPRI-TV, Channel 12 then put together an amazing piece about Palmieri and his work, complete with time lapse photography and an interview with (Reporter) Kim Kalunian. The piece ran on Christmas Eve and was shared widely on social media. A couple days later, he

noticed that the CNN wire had picked up the story and shared it on their Twitter account.

“At that point, I realized that the story was picking up steam,” Palmieri said.

“The next day I received an e-mail from a representative at CNN, with some questions for an online article they were going to publish on CNN.com. They posted the article, along with the WPRI piece, and when that happened, it seemed like every local news station affiliated with CNN ran the story.”

During this period, Palmieri’s website traffic increased by 7,000% and the number of his social media followers quintupled.

I know there are big debates going on about global warming. Is it man made? Is it Gods will? Many of us have an opinion on this. Whatever the side of the fence you are on, if you are old enough, you do remember winters started earlier, there was more snow, and the temperatures were colder. I have been selling clothing for over fifty years now, and mostly pay attention to the weather because it can affect business, one way or another. There have always been aberrations in temperatures. It has been warm in March, and freezing in June. There have been cold wet summers, and scorching hot summers. To those of us who have been around Rhode Island long enough, you may remember when the TV weatherman would give you an update as to which ponds were safe to skate in. When was the last time you heard about that?

I remember when every guy needed two navy blazers. One was wool flannel, the other was a tropical wool. Guys had two sets of dress trousers. They were a heavy flannel wool, and tropical wool. There were four defined seasons back then.

I remember one particularly cold January in the 70’s when the temperature did not go above freezing for almost 20 days! Everybody had rain coat, a long wool coat, and a very heavy casual coat. People were going skiing right here in Rhode Island, and there were a good number of ski shops in RI as well.

One of the biggest long-term trends I have seen over the last thirty years, is the downward trend in outerwear. In this day and age all a guy needs is one warm coat. I own an overcoat. I would wear my long topcoat almost every day. Now I hardly ever wear it. I guess I am not alone. As a retailer we have seen our coat business in a long- term decline, and we have too many winter coats on hand. We are now running an amazing winter coat sale. Some Major Changes for the Premier New England Fashion Week

STYLEWEEK Northeast, the premier fashion week held in Providence, Rhode Island, began in 2009, with the intention of providing a professional platform/event for designers from all over the country. They wanted to be modeled after major fashion weeks in other cities, as well as offer the community an event that is paralleled to those coveted fashion weeks that many of us strive to attend in NYC and beyond.

STYLEWEEK Founder and Creator, Rosanna M. Ortiz, has spent the past decade providing top-notch fashion shows for the Rhode Island and New England community twice per year. Each February and September, STYLEWEEK Northeast was the fashion event fixture in Providence. They celebrate their tenth anniversary this year and STYLEWEEK is changing things up a bit.

After 10 years, STYLEWEEK Northeast will now be hosted as an annual event. This year's fashion shows will be held from MAY 27- MAY 30th!

The decision derived from their new mission is to have a more high-quality event that provides designers ample time to create collections to be shown on the STYLEWEEK Northeast runway. The very first STYLEWEEK was June 2010, and was a seven-day event with twelve fashion shows from designers all over the eastern seaboard. STYLEWEEK Northeast showed designers from New York, Boston, Connecticut, and of course, Rhode Island, during that inaugural week.

Over the past ten years, STYLEWEEK Northeast has boasted over 214 designers from all over the country in eighteen

seasons. The event offers a professional outlet, where designers can debut their respective collections to the community, as well as the press, bloggers, influencers, and consumers.

STYLEWEEK has been pivotal for many designers in the region by providing top-notch video, photography and production, so the designers can propel their brands.

In addition, over the past eight years, STYLEWEEK has brought forth student designers during the runway show competition, SEED: Student Design Challenge. For this event, STYLEWEEK partnered with major universities in the New England area, as well as high schools.

“The decision to create STYLEWEEK Northeast became clear when we started to notice a movement within the fashion industry,” says Founder, Ortiz. “We noticed that many designers were focusing on sustainability by creating season-less collections and many of our regional emerging designers are doing the same.”

For the tenth year, STYLEWEEK will be returning to Sabin Place at the RI Convention Center. Sabin Place is a beloved spot for STYLEWEEK and the perfect venue for this event, as it provides a great flow for attendees and is very convenient.

We can’t wait to see what STYLEWEEK has in store for their 10th anniversary celebration, but we can already feel that based on their track record, it is going to be exciting and full of creativity.

This February, I want to challenge everyone to do something that they may not otherwise do-love themselves.

Love who you are. Accept who you are and only compete with yourself.

These are just words, but I truly wish everyone could find the beauty and uniqueness we were all born with.

Do not compare yourself to anyone else. We are all unique and special.

As a fitness instructor, sure I preach exercise, because I know how it makes one feel better both physically and mentally. I know it’s not easy for everyone to just say “ok, today I am going to start exercising and I will stick with it.” However, if you could, you would realize that exercise is not just about your exterior, it’s also about being mentally and spiritually healthy. It can change your life. Exercise is therapy. It puts us in a better state mentally and that puts us in a better state physically and spiritually.

Make a commitment to yourself to be good to yourself in 2020. Do things that make you feel good. When you do this, it becomes much easier to want to do the things you need to do for everyone else. We all have things we have to do for others, and let’s be honest, a

lot of the time we just don’t feel like it. If you felt good physically and mentally, those “chores” become so much easier to do.

Here are a few tips to help kickstart the new you:

Make a decision to eat healthier Yes, you can do it. Make better choices. There are so many options out there today. Good food actually tastes great. Not like years ago, when “good” food tasted like cardboard. Eat clean and don’t overeat. Try some new foods and watch how your body reacts to good food.

Make it a point to exercise Even if it means taking a two or three mile walk each day. Move your body. Don’t make excuses. Once into a routine, you will wonder why you didn’t start earlier.

The changes will be both physically and mentally astonishing. You will see a difference physically and will feel emotional stability. Initially, you will probably lose water weight, and that should be your incentive to keep moving. You will soon realize your energy level has increased, and all of a sudden, you find you are in a bet-

ter mood. You are a happier person within yourself and nicer to everyone around you.

Take time to walk your dog This is so important for both you and the dog. Dogs need exercise. They are not meant to sit all day, everyday. They need to release energy and this gives you the perfect reason to walk. I once read that if your dog is overweight, YOU are not getting enough exercise. This is a win/win for pet and owner. Pets also bring a sense of calmness and peace to our lives. Just sitting with a pet is calming, and that leads me into my last tip...

Make it a point to get in tune with your spiritual self We all have this, we just need to take a few minutes a day to tap in. It doesn’t matter what religion you are.

We are all energy and are all connected. Find a few minutes each day to meditate, pray, or talk to a loved one who has passed on. They are still with you. You can’t see or feel their human physical body, but their spirit,

energy, and soul are with you. The best thing about this is that you can talk to them anytime you want. Be in tune and pay attention. You may just receive a response in the form of a “sign,” that your loved one is around you and listening. Find PEACE. This will help you find the “best” you. You will start accepting who you are and will realize the gifts you have that can be shared with others. When you are not in tune spiritually and not feeling good mentally or physically, it is impossible for you to share your gifts with the world. We all have something to offer; soul search and share what you find with the world.

Now, what does all the have to do with fitness?

Everything! When we take care of our bodies, in and out, we evolve into a happier, healthier place. You must feel good about you, before you can help someone else, teach someone else, or love someone else. If you don’t feel good about yourself, helping, teaching, or loving someone isn’t going to be real. It is going to be you just going through the motions.

My wish for 2020 is that you make this the year you take care of yourself. You fall in love with who you are.

A STAPLE IN THE COMMUNITY FOR 25 YEARS

By Mark Berger There are few times when a business starts anew and prospers while their competitors fail. Several factors can be the cause of that outcome. When successful companies conduct business the right way, then customers respect and respond to them appropriately. They work toward becoming an institution in the community.

Valley Falls Flower Shop, located on 244 Broad Street in Cumberland, has served the community for 25 years. The building has been used for that purpose for more than a century, according to Owner Greg Grenon.

“The previous owners had this store for decades before we purchased it about 25 years ago,” said Grenon, who spent 35 years in wholesale flowers before owning his store.

“There have been seven or eight other flower shops in town that have since come and gone, but we are still here.”

Grenon said one of the main reasons why they have flourished is their customer service commitment. They deliver bouquets and other orders as far north as Bellingham, Massachusetts to as far south as Cranston and Warwick daily. They also fill special orders, rush orders and even help those 52 Shop In RI

customers who are either forgetful or have little time before an event.

Grenon said they are open early and stay late in another effort to cater to the community. While they are open six days, he said the extended hours are helpful to those who can find themselves in a “situation”.

Perhaps the biggest reason for their continuing success is paying attention to the details. Grenon said when people come to purchase arrangements that they should look and present themselves as such. He touts his staff that includes several designers and several more who come in for special occasions (such as the holidays) for additional support.

“I am lucky to have several designers, including my daughter, Jodie, who has worked with me here for 10 years, where other flower shops may be searching to find just one,” he said. “We try to take care of problems right away and not have those issues slide.

“We also check and make sure that each arrangement is worth their value,” Grenon continues. “That might mean adding a few extra flowers if it doesn’t look like enough. I would rather

do that than have an expensive piece leave here looking like it didn’t fulfill the customer’s expectations.”

He cited Valentine’s Day being one of the three craziest days of the year for the shop. Grenan said Mother’s Day and Christmas are the other two days that are considered “challenging.” Easter and Thanksgiving are also up there, but they are not what they used to be regarding request, he said.

While February 14 might be the busiest day of the year for the Valley Falls Flower Shop, Grenon said Mother’s Day might be the busiest week of the year because, as he put it, “everyone has a mother, a mother-in-law or both.”

Most people purchase roses for Valentine’s Day because that is the preferred flower, according to Grenon. They are also inundated with requests for chocolates, which they have imported locally from Sweenor’s Chocolates in Wakefield, plush animals (including a wide selection of teddy bears) and helium-filled balloons. While there are not any specific trends or popular designs for this day, Grenan said his staff will be busy handling requests right up until February 14.

Alluding to his mission of providing excellent customer service, Grenon said he does not do the one thing other florists might consider doing around this time. In addition to February 14, Valley Falls Flower Shop does a lot of work with funerals

“We don’t hike up the price of the flowers, I see a lot of places that will really mark up the items just because of the holiday. We don’t do that because it is important for us to have our customers return after having a wonderful experience with us."

"We have two drivers along with a dedicated staff that includes customer service receptionists, who are outgoing when they work with people.” (another reason why they are open early, Grenon explained), weddings, communions, school dances, graduations and other events. He said the prom season is a very busy time—from April to June—and have the staff on hand and on-call to make sure every request is handled expertly.

Valley Falls Flower Shop is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 6:00 and from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday but deliveries are made.

GETTING “2020 VISION” ON YOUR FINANCES IN THE NEW YEAR The start of the new year is a great time to focus on your finances and put them into perspective.

Competing demands on our time can often cloud our line of sight on what really matters. So, if you want a better handle on your finances, take these six foundational steps to get a better vision in 2020.

1. Review where you stand Begin by looking at your broad financial picture. This includes determining your net worth (assets you own minus liabilities or debts you owe). Identify whether you can cut costs in order to put more money to work toward your key financial goals. Also make sure you have a sufficient emergency fund that could cover at least three to six months of income.

2. Reassess your goals Determine if the goals you’ve established, such as education savings or retirement savings, are still appropriate based on your plans for the future. Are you on track to achieve them? Can you find more dollars to put toward them?

3. Consider your debt and credit score If you haven’t checked your credit score lately, it’s a good idea to do so. Look at your current debts (auto loans, mortgages, student loans, etc.) to see if there are ways they can be paid down more quickly or if you could benefit by refinancing any loans.

4. Review your portfolio Investment markets have performed well for an extended period of time. Are you prepared for increased unpredictability in the markets? Make sure the risk reflected in your portfolio aligns with your risk profile.

Consider rebalancing investments if your portfolio allocations have shifted due to varying performance for different assets.

5. Conduct a checkup of your protection strategy Now is a good time to review your insurance policies to make sure you are properly covered. This includes everything from auto and home insurance to life insurance, disability income coverage and long-term care protection.

6. Solidify your estate plan Pay special attention to your estate planning needs. This is a concern regardless of your age and assets. Review your will to be sure that it is current and reflects your wishes for how your legacy will be carried out. If you don’t have a will, arrange to have one prepared. Consider whether trusts need to be in place or if those in place are up to date. Also review beneficiary designations on your financial accounts and insurance policies.

Football Powers Up for Inaugural Season

Many people growing up want to own something either historic, famous or become the envy of others.

One of those things may include owning a sports team. How cool would it be to call the shots, hire and fire players, trade for talent and talk to the media non-stop about the state of the franchise? While there are most people who may fantasize about the prospect, there are very few people with the vast resources, time, effort and staff to make it all happen.

Since the professional teams in the five major U.S. sports— football, baseball, hockey, soccer and basketball—are all spoken for, then what about the prospect of being the owner of a minor league team? They might not be as glamourous, but there would be far fewer headaches and media scrutiny than there would be at the pro level.

When the chance for being the head of a minor league football team came calling for Woonsocket’s Alex Hughes, the long-time football fan could not turn the offer down.

Hughes is the owner of the New England Spartans, a minor league football team that is part of the East Coast Football League (ECFL). The League consists of 20 teams representing all six New England states and competes during the summer for the right to be called champions.

“There are three teams from Rhode Island (the other teams are from Providence and Narragansett), four 78 Shop In RI

from Connecticut, one each from New Hampshire and Maine and the rest from Massachusetts,” said Hughes, himself a die-hard New Orleans Saints fan.

“We have 53 players on the team. They are primarily in their mid-20s, but we also have older players as well. Our team is practicing now and will begin the season in June and run until the league championship game takes place on Labor Day weekend.”

Hughes moved to the area recently and had thoughts of joining a franchise. He initially settled on a Narragansett team (The Rhode Island Raiders) until travel demands made it difficult for him to keep the commitment. Seeing a need for a team in this region, Hughes began forming his own team. He said the players usually graduated from either high school or college and harbor dreams of playing professionally.

For that to become possible, they must have a chance to play. Hughes said not making the National Football League (NFL) is not the end of the road. He cited numerous other outlets internationally such as the Canadian Football League (CFL) and European Football that have teams playing professionally with much fanfare and success.

“There are some teams in this league that draw well and others that don’t. The reason is marketing.

How can you go to a game when you don’t know the date/place/time? We are hoping to build this team from the ground up and hope that football fans will embrace this team before the colleges and

professional teams get back to work in the fall,” Hughes said.

Now, Hughes said he has two coaches in place in addition to the 53 players. He noted two players on the roster that include former Shea High School standout Chris Duarte and Manny Ceballos, who was on the Woonsocket High School Football team that won the Super Bowl two years ago.

Hughes said he is currently looking for more players—particularly offensive linemen — as well as a front office, support staff and coaches to lead the team. Hughes added the prototypical player he seeks to become part of the Spartans.

“I am looking for players who are dedicated, determined, intense, loves to compete and loyal,” he said. “Above all else, I want someone who will show up to practice, do what is needed to be successful and put the team ahead of oneself.”

The Spartans are currently practicing for their April preseason schedule and their regular season slate that begins in June. Hughes said he is looking for a venue to play its home games. That part is in negotiations now and hopes to have the information ready soon.

Hughes said he has been happy with the initial support of area businesses and individuals who have

come to support the franchise. He hopes that more people will come and help out whether it’s through in-kind donations, sponsorships, volunteering or simply attending the games when they start.

Players who are interested in becoming part of the team must pay a $25 fee unless they want to play on the offensive line, which there is no fee. Players are also required to provide their own equipment.

Hughes said that is hard finding people for those positions thus they waive the registration. Players can be as young as 17 but must have their parent’s permission and not be involved in any high school sports.

Tickets for the games are $10 each for adults, free for children under 13, $1 for seniors and $2 for first responders, military and others in those fields. The full schedule will be announced in the spring. The Spartans are also looking for sponsors and donations so that they may have an excellent season. All funds stay within the organization that will help with travel, equipment and other administrative aspects.
