The three leading Bauhaus locations - Weimar, Dessau and Berlin - will host major exhibitions, and new museums will open in Weimar and Dessau.

Making Lasagna as a Labor of Love

Once you have made a gravy, creating a delicious lasagna is fast, easy and a perfect meal that will delight your loved ones. My suggestion for making the gravy (sauce) is to use Pastene Kitchen Ready tomatoes. I also use the meatballs, mild sausage, pepperoni, pork, and beef that I cook in the gravy as part of the lasagna, so basically, most of the lasagna ingredients are in the gravy and what makes the lasagna taste so tasty.

I use extra virgin olive oil and garlic to start off the gravy and fry it until golden brown. From there I fry the sausage, Margherita pepperoni stick (cut into pieces), beef, and pork in the same pan until it browns nicely. I then add 5 cans of Pastene Kitchen Ready tomatoes (with salt), and 2 cans of water and stir well.

I also add garlic powder, salt, parmesan cheese, a tiny

pinch of red pepper flakes, and about a tsp. of sugar to the gravy and meat. I continue to stir it well on very low heat, until it comes to a light boil. From there, I stir the gravy every 15 minutes or so throughout the entire process and keep it on a very low heat to prevent burning on the bottom of the pan.

For the meatballs, depending on how many pounds of hamburg you use will determine the amount of ingredients you add to them for flavor. Mix one egg for each pound of hamburg. I then use Progresso Italian flavored breadcrumbs, garlic powder, parmesan cheese, salt, a pinch of black pepper, freshly cut up basil, and a good amount of dried parsley. After mixing well, I add some cold water (about Âź cup for 2 lbs. hamburg) and maybe more breadcrumbs, until I reach a texture where

the meatballs are easy to roll, and stay nicely formed with a sticky texture. For the purposes of using the meatballs in the lasagna, I like to cook them directly in the gravy so that they stay moist and easy to mash up when it comes time to use them. (For those who prefer to bake them, line them up on a foiled cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees until browned. When done, add them to the gravy for further cooking and to add more flavor to the gravy after draining most of the oil from baking.)

I like to simmer my gravy for 4 to 5 hours and find that the longer it cooks, the better it tastes.

Lasagna Preparation Ingredients:

2 boxes Barilla (no boil) lasagna pasta 4 pounds Supreme Ricotta cheese 1 bag mozzarella shredded cheese Supreme Scamorza cheese 4 eggs (1 egg for each pound of Ricotta cheese) • Parmesan cheese (to taste) • Salt and pepper (to taste) Mix the Ricotta cheese with the eggs in a large bowl. Add ½ cup of parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and a half cup of mozzarella cheese to the mixture and stir well. After the gravy is cooked, use it to cover the bottom of a lasagna dish. Next, add a layer of the barilla pasta, leaving a little space between each piece because it will spread as it cooks. Next, add a thick layer of the Ricotta cheese mix, a light layer of gravy, and a layer of the gravy meat after it has been mashed up and mixed together. Next, sprinkle mozzarella cheese and thin slices of the scamorza cheese over the layer and repeat the layering two more times, for a total of 3 layers. Top off with a layer of Barilla pasta, a good amount of gravy, more mozzarella cheese, the remainder of the scamorza cheese and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.

Cook, covered with foil in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 45 minutes on the oven’s middle rack. Remove the foil and cook for 15 additional minutes. Allow the lasagna to sit for at least 30 minutes to set, and then serve. Another option is to cook, let cool, refrigerate, and heat the next day for the ingredients to meld together even more.

Beat cream cheese with a hand held mixer until fluffy. Add sugar and vanilla, beating well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Place a vanilla wafer, flat side down in each muffin pan liner. Spoon cream cheese mixture over wafers. Cook for 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely. Top with fillings of your choice.

Milk Chocolate Vs. Dark Chocolate Which is Better for You?

Some chocolate junkies are obsessed with the creamy texture and taste that makes milk chocolate as popular as it is. Others, however, acquire a taste for the more bitter tasting dark chocolate and also take into consideration the health benefits it offers.

Cocoa, a main ingredient in chocolate, is a great source of flavonoids, a special class of antioxidants that are the main reason chocolate is now considered to be a treat that is good for you. For health purposes, though, which is best for consumption-milk chocolate or dark chocolate?

According to medical studies, although milk chocolate may taste great, it’s not nearly as good for you as dark chocolate.

This is because milk chocolate has less of the original cocoa bean than dark chocolate does, and the more cocoa that is present, the higher the nutritional quality. Milk chocolate is made by combining chocolate with milk powder or condensed milk, which will make most anything taste better.

Additionally, dark chocolate has a much lower sugar content and less calories, while it contains up to four times the fiber. Dark chocolate is also packed with beneficial minerals such as potassium, zinc, and selenium, and a 100g bar of dark (70 per cent or more) chocolate provides 67% of the RDA of iron.

Since milk chocolate does contain some cocoa solids though, it’s not completely void of all nutrition; however, the nutritional quality cannot compare with dark chocolate.

Experts have found that dark chocolate, especially, is good for the heart, circulation, and brain, and it has been suggested that it

may be beneficial in major health issues such as autism, obesity and diabetes. The very latest research even suggests that eating chocolate could help keep your brain function further into senior years.

Other findings about milk and dark chocolate: Consumption of cocoa has been shown to reduce levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and raise levels of “good” cholesterol, potentially lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The flavonols in dark chocolate can protect the skin against sun damage (though you’d still better apply that sunscreen).

Chocolate can help you lose weight. Really. Neuroscientist Will Clower says a small square of chocolate melted on the tongue 20 minutes before a meal triggers the hormones in the brain that say, “I’m full,” cutting the amount of food you end up consuming. Finishing a meal with the same small trigger could reduce subsequent snacking.

It’s good for mothers and babies-A Finnish study found that chocolate reduced stress in expectant mothers, and that the babies of such mothers smiled more often than the offspring of non-chocolate-eating parents.

It may prevent diabetes. It sounds crazy, but cocoa has

been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. So dark chocolate-in moderation-might delay or prevent the onset of diabetes.

Chocolate is good for the brain-Flavanols are thought to reduce memory loss in older people, and the antiinflammatory qualities of dark chocolate have been found beneficial in treating brain injuries such as concussion.

Chocolate makes you feel better-Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), which is the same chemical that your brain creates when you feel like you’re falling in love. PEA encourages your brain to release feel-good endorphins.

Regardless of which is healthier, the key is to consume chocolate in moderation and choose dark chocolate varieties that contain at least 65% cacao. Don’t assume your grocery store checkout line dark chocolate bar is best; pay close attention to the percentage of its cacao.

As far as the favorite brand of chocolate goes, that is determined by one’s own taste buds. With all of the choices available, even compared to the most expensive of chocolates, mine is a good old fashioned milk chocolate Hershey bar. As for dark chocolate, I am not a fan and regardless of its health benefits, when it comes to enjoying a treat, I will opt for milk chocolate every time.

What began as a simple thought has now become an annual springtime event. It’s a place to learn about what’s available in the local area and beyond in relation to wellness services and products to use to be healthy on all levels.

That’s the short description of the 9th annual DiscoverYou Wellness Expo which will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 801 Greenwich Ave., Warwick, on Sunday, March 10th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The 2019 event is sponsored by Shop in RI magazine, The Biomed Center of New England, and Natural Awakenings Magazine; produced by DiscoverYou Events; and co-hosted by Elaine DeJoy. The Expo features two keynote speakers; the first of whom is Roland Comtois. Comtois is a

clear-sighted spiritual medium, a compelling inspirational speaker, host of the podcast, “The Wisdom Keepers” and TV show, “Signs of Spirit,” author of Signs of Spirit, And Then There Was Heaven, 16 Minutes, and co-author of 365 Days of Angel Prayers.

Roland’s newest book, Signs of Spirit about Roland’s development of his signature “Purple Papers” tells stories of love lost, love found, and connections between loved ones that extend into infinity. For over 40 years, Roland has reached many along his vocational path from physical to spiritual healing. He has worked as a geriatric nurse, Reiki Master, metaphysical teacher, and grief specialist.

The second keynote speaker is Dr. Jon Porman, an internationally-known holistic physician focusing on the topics of health, well-

ness, and human performance. He has lectured, trained, and treated clients worldwide since 1996. He was an officer in the United States Marine Corps and a contributing author of the book, The Thought That Changed My Life Forever.

When attendees walk through the doors, they can visit exhibits related to the mind, body, and spirit. Among some of the exhibits available are: wellness professionals, including chiropractors, massage therapists, medical doctors, health coaches, life and business coaches, mediums, energy workers, and more. Vendors include: essential oils, CBD products, clothing, beauty products, environmentally-friendly products, local authors, and more.

“The goal is to create a fun and interactive event— making it a destination. Exhibitors are encouraged to give the attendees something experiential, versus just information about products and services. When attendees have an experience, they will remember the exhibitors they spoke to long after the event,” she added.

“Our mission is for this event to be a destination where people can learn about what products and services are available in their immediate area to be well in mind, body, and spirit,” she continued. “The Expo will provide attendees things to experience, learn, and the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.

Separate workshops will be available for those who want to learn more about a particular topic or presenter.”

Lataille said that she’s very excited about the new addition to the Expo. An Event App is being created so that all the information is easily accessible. Attendees can create their own schedules, view exhibitor and workshop information, write notes, take surveys, and more, as well as earn points to win door prizes throughout the day.

“The event has grown in popularity due to interest in the holistic model. The public is looking for different ways to be well on all levels. It’s a great starting point for those who do not know where to begin,” said Lataille.

Lataille, along with her brother, created the first event in April 2009, which was held at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln. That Expo featured 54 exhibitors and brought in over 500 attendees. The Expo was held there for four years before moving on to other locations due to limitations and the public’s hesitation about attending a wellness event held at a casino. This is the third year the Expo has been held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, taking over the Grand and Plaza Ballrooms.

Fitness is a billion dollar industry and still growing, but regardless of the business profits, studies report that people are unhealthier than ever. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), from 2015-2016, 39.8% of adults in the US are considered to be obese; that’s a staggering 93.3 million people! If you’re wondering why that is, it’s definitely a complicated answer. What I can say from my perspective is that more people are purchasing weight loss products, sports apparel, gym memberships, and various other diet and fitness related products on the market than they’re actually using or are even necessary. If you have read previous articles of mine, you know I always stress to keep it as simple as possible, but I know that sometimes trying something new can keep us motivated. I want to highlight that what I believe from my professional experience can add value to your fitness plan and help you achieve your short and long term goals.

If you ask me, most of the products sold are completely unnecessary to achieve your goals. There are all sorts of teas, shakes, and pills that claim to get you in shape, but are packed with junk ingredients and potentially harmful stimulants. Most of these products are short term solutions. This means-sure you’ll drop some weight in the beginning, but it’s not a sustainable plan that will keep weight off and have you feeling healthy for the long run. With that being said, I understand that the type of world we live in now is very hectic for most of us, so we need quick, healthy solutions for our everyday plan. Most of us do not get enough of the vital nutrients we need everyday, and on top of that, our soil is depleted of nutrients in comparison to years ago, according to Ronald Amundson, a University of California-Berkeley professor who co-authored a 2015 study on soil depletion. As a result, the nutrients in the fruits and vegetables we eat are being compromised.

Supplementation can be very beneficial. Meal replacement shakes, vitamins, and other whole food supplements, however, need to be carefully inspected before you buy them. Always look at the ingredients label and make sure that the product is comprised of whole foods. Another thing that most people don’t realize is that a protein shake and a meal replacement shake are not the same. A protein supplement should be used to get more protein, usually following a workout or maybe as a snack if you’re not getting enough from your daily food intake. Any supplement with more than 30-40 grams of protein isn’t really helping because protein amounts beyond that are converted into glucose. Now I know that for some other people that number may vary, but for the

majority of us, anything above that per meal is unnecessary. A meal replacement shake contains all of your macronutrients such as protein, carbs, and fat, and is used to replace a meal. Pay close attention to all of the ingredients to be sure it has everything you need, and most importantly, to ensure it’s not loaded with sugar. The amount of sugar and the type of sugar are important to note. Sugar has many names such as fructose, maltose, glucose, maltodextrin, dextrose, corn syrup, brown rice syrup; and these are just a few examples. Do your research and learn how to identify what you are consuming. Speak with a registered dietitian or nutrition expert for your specific needs.

Something that we see marketed often in the fitness industry is fitness apparel. No matter what your style, there is something out there to suit your taste, but do we really need specific apparel to enhance our performance? My short answer is no, absolutely not. You could pretty much wear whatever you’d like and still get a good workout in. I do believe that good quality workout clothes help us to feel more comfortable and provide support, and for some can help keep them motivated. The two most important items of apparel when it comes to working out are footwear, and for women, bras. For most workouts, your feet are really taking a lot of the work, not only for exercising, but in our everyday lives! Not having proper support for your feet can lead to other issues like back pain and plantar fasciitis. Invest in good, quality footwear, and always try them on before purchasing. A good sports bra is very important, especially for high impact workout sessions. Without good support, there can be immediate pain and discomfort, but there can also be lasting effects, including neck and back pain. If looking good is important and helps motivate you, then embrace it!

Buy yourself a new workout outfit so you can look forward to your next session and feel confident. Price is not always synonymous with quality. There are plenty of affordable clothes out there that will fit comfortably and last.

If you hear about a weight loss miracle that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Any diet that suggests you completely cut out carbohydrates, fats, or proteins, is not a good one. Unless you’re instructed by a medical professional to do this, there is absolutely no reason you should. It is very possible to control weight and get in shape by eating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. The occasional splurge here and there is good for your mind and will not hurt your body. My most important piece of advice is to enjoy yourself and view taking care of your body as a gift and not a chore. Everything you need to reach your goals is within you.

He said that power teas and healthy energy drinks are among The Nutrition Station’s biggest sellers. “Athletes and those who are active love the fact that there are no additives, sugars, or other potentially unhealthy ingredients that other well-known energy drinks have,” he added.

“Another popular item during the winter months has been the Peanut Butter Kiss Cookie Shake, but the most popular is the Peanut Butter Oreo Shake,” Piatek said. He goes on to say that there’s a good reason why people continue to frequent their store. “Our biggest selling point is that we make all of our drinks using the same process,” he said. “We are big on consistency, so customers do not have to ask for a certain person to make their drinks.

We are unlike anyplace else in that regard. We hear comments from people all the time about how drinks at other places can be really good one visit and bland the next time. Drinks at other business can vary in taste based on the staff (making them).”

The Nutrition Station is open weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays. Piatek said they hope to have Sunday morning hours soon.

They are available on several social media sites, including Instagram and Facebook, where they post special deals and contests. They are also receiving reviews on Google and Yelp.

Tips to make that journey a lot easier.

You don’t have to be a runner or even built like a runner to engage in this activity. When you see marathon runners, cross country runners, or runners who are in the sport to compete, they usually have a long, lean body structure, however; anyone can run. You just have to pace yourself and start slow. Running is as much mental as it is physical. That is true for both the physical activity of running and for the mental therapy it provides. If you never ran before, or your running background is limited, here are some helpful tips to get you started and to help keep you motivated. Many studies reveal that a warm-up routine can help you perform better, not with just running, but with any aerobic exercise. You should always warm up your muscles before starting any aerobic activity. Warm ups don’t have to take long, nor do they have to be difficult, however; when runners do dynamic stretches, they are able to go almost 2 ½ minutes longer before they tire out, compared to if they don’t warm up. This may not seem like a lot, but for those competing or running a race, whether it be a 5k, 1/2 marathon, or marathon, 2 ½ minutes makes a huge difference. Even if you are not training for a race, stretching before and after your run is important for many reasons, including helping to prevent injury.

Here are some helpful stretches to do before you run: • Hip Flexor Stretch Stand tall. Flex your hip and knee to bring your right knee up toward your chest as you swing your left arm forward. Lower leg to starting position then repeat on the other leg.

• Leg Flexor Stretch Stand tall with your right arm forward. Bend your knee at a right angle in front of you, thigh parallel to the ground, (lunge position) as you swing your right arm back and left arm forward. Contract your quads to extend your leg straight out. Return to standing, then repeat with the other leg.

• Leg Extensor Stretch Tighten your hamstrings and bend your right knee behind you, bringing your heel toward your butt as you swing your right arm back and left arm forward. Straighten your leg, then repeat on the other side.

• Squats Stand with feet together, shoulder width apart, or stand in a wide stance. Bend at the knees, lowering your butt to the floor or as low as you can. Sit into your heels. Stand up tall and repeat.

You can also warm your muscles up by walking up and down some stairs or walking around the block for a 1/4 of a mile before you start to train. The purpose is to get your blood flowing.

I do feel it is important to also have a supportive running shoe.

I always buy my running shoes ½ size larger than my normal shoe size. When you run your feet should be able to breathe.

You don’t want a shoe that is too tight.

When you start running, don’t set your distance expectation too high. When I first started, I went to a local running track.

Once around the track was 1/4 mile. The first night, I ran once around, then walked a few times to build my cardio endurance. I went back the second night and ran twice around and again walked to build my cardio endurance. The third night, I went back and ran three times around, followed by a walk. I continued to do this, adding a lap every night, until I reached three miles. I then ran three miles periodically throughout the month. One day, I decided I wanted to go five miles. By this time, I had built up my cardio endurance, so it wasn’t too difficult to add a couple of miles. Music is also a motivator. so I always have my phone or a shuffle with me with plenty of music to keep me going. What brought me back night after night was the way I felt both physically and mentally. I physically felt like I had more energy and was less tired during the day. Mentally, I felt I could take on the world. Endorphins, along with many other chemicals are released in your brain when you are active. There is no question that exercise is natural medicine.

For a lot of people, running on a treadmill can seem boring.

Most people prefer outdoors, as there is a change of scenery.

However; running on a treadmill is much more forgiving to your joints. If you are going to run a race, my advice is to train as much as you can on a treadmill or a track that is made for running. On race day, you will have no choice, but save your joints during training by using a treadmill.

LOOKING OUT FOR THE HEALTHIER SIDE OF LIFE

By Mark Berger When a passion meets an opportunity, the results can sometimes be life changing. This is what can be said of Beth Newberry of Pure Haven.

Because her oldest son, Liam, was experiencing motor tics that impacted his life, including the inability to stay focused during school and other activities, she knew something had to be done to combat his problems.

“We began noticing Liam having these tics at three years old,” said Newberry. “His fourth grade teacher noticed them, as well, and had an occupational therapist go through the classroom to make it a better learning environment for Liam. His initial diagnosis at three was that he would grow out of it, but when he was 10 years old, he also had vocal tics-tics that were causing neck pain and other issues.”

Newberry said that one day while she was driving her car and listening to the radio, she heard about a local company that was manufacturing non-toxic household products. As the interview aired, she learned about the company and their line of organic, non-toxic products that could help change people’s perceptions about the products they use in their own homes.

After listening to the entire interview on the radio, Newberry went to the company’s website and started researching the ingredients in the products in her own home that were oftentimes described with words such as “natural,” “safe,” and “mild.” As a result of her findings, Newberry realized that the ingredients in many of the products she and her family were using were loaded with neurotoxins.

The Johnston-based company that Newberry learned from appealed to

her because she wanted to support area local businesses (Newberry lives in nearby North Smithfield), the products would be less harmful, and the ingredients would result in a better outcome for her own family.

“As any parent can imagine, when I started researching what was in the products my family was using, I was really mad and immediately wanted to shout from the rooftops and clean out my entire house of those products,” Newberry said.

“Although there is no cure for his ailment, there are ways that Liam has been able to lessen the tics and remain active. As for myself, I needed to find a different path.”

“What I learned opened my eyes to the fact that the products used in my home had ingredients that were potentially unsafe,” she continued.

“Companies can add to a product

what they want as their main ingredient and then hide literally hundreds of ingredients in the word ‘fragrance’ to keep their trade secret intact. This has been going on since cosmetic labeling laws went into effect in the 1930s.”

Something else that was eyeopening for Newberry was how quickly chemicals can enter the human body through the skin. She said that she learned it can take roughly 26 seconds for chemicals to seep into the scalp, groin, gums, and armpit area. She also explained that people usually don’t think twice when they are using shampoo and/or conditioner in the shower, deodorant while getting ready in the morning, or toothpaste.

Newberry said the latter poses a “double-whammy” because it not only enters the gums, but it can easily be swallowed and affect a person’s entire system.

Pure Haven does not mass produce their items—they only make small batches during their peak usage months to insure nothing is left to sit for months at a time after the given season (such as bug spray during the summer, according to Newberry).

Some of the products they offer include: shampoo, cleaning products, such as the popular “Master Blaster” that effectively cleans up messy stains and odors of all types, deodorant, lotions, and more. The products are made locally and the company will provide information to someone thinking about changing the products they use.

“People should learn more about what they are bringing into their homes and what they are potentially putting into their bodies,” she said. “If they notice something that doesn’t sound right, then it probably isn’t. That doesn’t mean they should just throw everything out. It should be more of a gradual cleaning.”

“Most people want to use up what they have and transition over as they run out of products,” Newberry added. “I love the Pure Haven Lifestyle Bundle because it gives a good sampling of many of our products and will easily remove 117 toxins from your family’s daily routine. As for Liam, he is currently enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he studies technical theatre. Newberry said the exercises he does helps control his symptoms and that he knows what to do when his tics are heightened during certain times—like finals—when he’s more stressed and not getting as much sleep. She said that the help of his teachers early on made a lasting impression on how he views life and taught him about the contributions he can now make in the world.

Newberry’s biggest piece of advice for people thinking about trying Pure Haven is to not go crazy at first—and learn.

since my first job in retail, in February Ever 1970, I have been a student of retail. I watched and observed. I tried to figure out what worked and what didn’t work. I had mentors and teachers from the myriad of retailers I met over the years. I was always eager to listen and to learn. I figured out over the last 49 years that no matter how much you think you may know, there are ten times as many things that you don’t know. The Retail clothing business is a very big guessing game. Who do you listen to? Who calls the shots? Who determines what is going to be desirable a year from now? My questions go on and on.

I have a very different view of this business than I did as a kid. I have learned several very important lessons throughout the years. These lessons have made me a smarter, yet far from perfect retailer. The most important lesson at the time is to make sure the product you offer is what the customers want you to offer. This lesson was learned while watching a skit from a 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live. The skit was about a couple of young businessmen who opened a store in a mall selling Scotch Tape. It was called the “Tape Store”. Much to their chagrin, every customer who come into the store wanted to buy a Cassette Tape. The business owners stuck to their guns, and eventually went out of business.

Watching that episode, I had an epiphany.

Understand what the customer wants and needs. You will never sell a customer something he does not want and has no need for. In other words, listen to the customers and carry what they want you to carry.

Years later a young lady bought a men’s store around the corner from us, and I went in to wish her well. She asked me if I had any advice for her. “Let your customers tell you what they want you to carry”. Her response was, “no, we will show the customers what they should wear”. She was out of business a few years later.

Another life long lesson I learned happened when I was in the lady’s clothing business in the 1970’s. I would try to get a look at the labels on the boxes being delivered to the competition. A competitor saw me doing that, and came up to me and said this: “What you are doing is not a good idea. You may see what your competition is carrying, but you have no idea whether or not that merchandise is selling well, or is all going to be marked down.

Worry about your own business, and forget about the competition”. Since that point on, I never shopped the competition. I just trust my own judgment as to what is relevant to out customers. All the time now we hear that our merchandise is unique, and is different than any other store. Just the other day, I was visited by a sales rep who had never been in Franklin Rogers Ltd. He told me that his first impression of our store was the uniqueness of our product. We looked like no other store he calls on. I have to wonder though; we often hear that all the other stores in the area look the same. What that tells me is the buyers from those stores are spending to much time in the competition, and not enough time developing a unique product.

All can provide the same equipment, talent and products, however, there is one event company that stands apart from all others. ADVANCED Production & Design offers full-service event planning and production for fashion weeks, weddings, celebrations, and much, much more. Below are many reasons why ADVANCED is a head above the rest. As they say, lighting IS everything.

1. WHAT DOES ADVANCED PRODUCTION AND DESIGN PROVIDE THAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU FROM OTHER EVENT RESOURCES IN NEW ENGLAND?

Anyone can provide the equipment, but our team works tirelessly to ensure that our customer service and commitment to our customers are like none other. Advanced Production & Design started after meeting several customers who felt let down and disgruntled at the service they were receiving elsewhere. Over the years, we continue to improve and expand our array of services to make sure our customers always have a champion in their corner to produce a successful event. We at Advanced Production & Design are incredibly passionate and hands on with every event, as we continue with the same passion we started with. Over the years, we have developed a special place in our hearts for helping the nonprofit community, which now makes up more than 50% of the company’s customer base. Through these efforts, it has allowed our company to help even more people then we set out to. We have assisted in raising over 15 million dollars for non-profits through events, functions, and a variety of other engagements.

5. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT TO DATE? We have been so fortunate to meet and work with

fantastic people. We have such a blast with all of our customers and couldn’t be more proud of the incredible team we have built and whom we get to work with on a day-to-day basis. We have had the pleasure of working with companies like Hasbro, PBS, Brown University, Cox Communications, and even the Volvo Ocean Race. The VOLVO OCEAN RACE NEWPORT STOPOVER was a huge accomplishment for our company-from winning the competitive bidding process straight through the end of the race, and everything in between. To have global exposure right in our own backyard was a true blessing. Of course, we worked very hard for every accolade and for the successful outcome. Like some of our other events that have been weather sensitive, this event required 24/7 attention, for which we are equipped and happy to provide.

6. WHEN YOU SAY, “PRODUCTION AND DESIGN,” HOW DO YOU CORRELATE THE TWO? IS DESIGN A LARGE PART OF PRODUCTION IN THIS FIELD? Design and production are two extremely crucial pieces of a successful event. We work with customers who come from a variety of backgrounds and are in need of varying services.

Some of our customers call us and are able to tell us exactly what they want, while others put their trust in our team to design the entire event from start to finish. After the design phase, our staff works with our production team, whose focus is executing the event’s details as have been laid out through the design process. Understanding the process helps us step in wherever a customer needs our help, whether it is early in the process, or even as late as the day of the event.

7. WHAT MAIN COMPONENTS NEED TO COME TOGETHER TO EXECUTE A SUCCESSFUL EVENT? People, Process, Product. All over the business community we hear about the three Ps and how they are the key to success. Events are our business, so for us, it is critical to have an incredible team who loves what they do and works every option and angle to satisfy our customers. There is always a baseline process for creating a successful event; our team learns from every event and improves on this process to provide the ultimate outcome.

production teams to create a stellar and memorable event.

Our focus on service and relationships with our customers are what keeps us excited to use our creativity on every event and what keeps our customers coming back for more.

8. WHERE DO YOU SEE APAD IN THE FUTURE AND HOW WILL YOU STRIVE TO GET THERE? We want to extend our services to people in more places.

In the future, we want to be able to help customers, from wherever they live and/or are planning an event. From our homebase in Warwick, we have spent the past year looking at potential locations for additional offices in areas where we already have a customer base outside of RI. This way, we can bring our services closer to those existing customers and will take on new customers in these areas to help bridge more connections, while providing stress free solutions to their event planning. As an all inclusive event resource group, we want to be prepared to travel to wherever our customers need us. By expanding to new locations in these other areas, we will be able to still provide the same services, but at a much faster rate.

5:00 AM I have an internal clock that each day before the sunrises, my eyes slowly open without the need for extra encouragement. Similar to my lack of dislike for fad diets, I don’t want to wake up to an alarm clock so I don’t. I don’t even own one. Once I get out of bed, I brush my teeth and put on workout clothes: black yoga pants and a sports bra from my drawer that is filled with so many to choose from. I select a sports bra based on my mood for the day.

That color or style of sports bra sets the tone for my day because it reflects how I’m feeling that morning.

I head straight downstairs to my Nespresso machine. The machine magically creates the perfect cup of dark, rich and very strong coffee for me. .the kind of strong that puts hair on your teeth. Just the way I like it!

5:30 am The house is very quiet because I’m the only one awake so this is time for me to sit quietly in my home office and catch up on emails and prepare for my day. Preparing for my day entails diligently reviewing my calendar for the day: With whom will I be meeting with? What are my goals for the meeting? What are my goals for the day?

6:00 am My morning ritual always includes snuggling in bed with my 9-year-old daughter Victory for 15 minutes or so before she has to get herself ready for school. She’s usually stretching and gazing up into her ceiling around this time, so I peek in and jump into bed with her for our morning snuggle snuggles routine.

6:30 am I head back downstairs to make breakfast for Victory and prepare her a healthy snack pack for school. Victory and I have breakfast together, review homework and discuss our day and what we look forward to and discuss what we’d like to cook for dinner together.

7:30 am I drop Victory off at school. Sometimes I’ll walk her into her classroom. A lot of times, I drive to the circle and watch her walk into her school like a big girl. It’s bittersweet to see her all grown up, with her lunch box in hand, her huge backpack on her back waving good bye and blowing kisses as she confidently walks towards the school entrance.

8:00 am I arrive at the gym to meet my trainer, the other V in my life I call her. V, or Vanessa Kolker-Serio is the Co-Owner and Director of Operations at Top Strength! She is also my very fit, very friendly and very fierce trainer! We meet 3-4 times a week and she guides me through a rigorous HIIT workout balanced with very focused weight sessions that target specific muscles using both isolation and either light or body weights. Good form over heavy weights, constant maintenance using a roller on the mat and stretch, stretch, stretch are a big part of the daily workout routine with V! We are constantly laughing throughout the workouts, so my core is always engaged during each exercise or movement! After an hour of intense training, I hop on a cardio machine for another 30 minutes either a light jog on the treadmill or the beloved stair master!

9:30 am Breakfast meeting at Nick’s on Broadway with my friend Michelle Carr, Deputy Director of Leadership Rhode Island to discuss the impact of my family foundation and my personal investment in Leadership Rhode Island and College leadership Rhode Island’s initiatives and goals.

11:00 am Participate on a speaking panel for College Leadership Rhode Island at Amica to discuss the importance of philanthropy and its direct connection to business and the economy. Quick meet and greet 12:00 pm Lunch meeting at the University Club with my YearUp mentee. YearUp is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional development.

1:30 pm Commute to my office, Ting Barnard’s Studio on the West Side for a quick afternoon coffee meeting with a local artist (musician, chef, fashion designer or photographer) to discuss an upcoming art exhibition at my studio space. What I love about my work is that I have the opportunity to meet creative individuals with different skill sets utilizing different mediums.

2:30 pm Connect and late coffee meeting with Suzanne Fogarty at Lincoln School to discuss potential exciting partnerships for the school. We also take the time to catch up on the latest fashion, good reads and good eats.

Suzanne has become a friend and mentor to me since her appointment as Head of Lincoln School where Victory attends school.

3:30 pm While Victory has piano and voice lessons at home, I have the ability to jump on a conference call with a client to discuss an upcoming project or the status of an existing project, video shoot or marketing campaign.

4:30 pm Prepare dinner with my Mom while Victory does her homework. I enjoy cooking Thai food with her because the entire house becomes filled with such aromatic smells afterwards.

5:00 pm Prepare speaking engagement for my evening studio event or an evening meeting.

5:30 pm Dinner with the family at least 3 times a week around the dinner table with no phones and no distractions. Friday nights, we cook as a family and it’s fiesta night!!!

6:30 pm Dinner meeting with Yarrow Thorne, the Founder of Avenue Concept, a public arts organization to discuss a new installation piece or mural.

7:30 pm Make an appearance at a fashion event, book signing or social event. Tonight, I have the opportunity to meet some amazing Millenials in Rhode Island at a social gathering through Travis Escobar, a dear friend and the Founder of Millennial RI. He graciously introduces me to his Board, Staff and peers.

8:30 pm Read and tuck Victory into bed. This is a special time for me to unwind with Victory and it’s actually my favorite time of the day.

9:30 pm Head into my home office to read or work on light emails.

10:30 pm Read or journal before bedtime.

MOVIE REVIEW AQUAMAN

By Lauren Stanford Walking into Aquaman, I expected the movie to be an expositionheavy origin story to set the character up for later films with some action sprinkled throughout.

While Aquaman is an origin story with action, it superseded my expectations by evenly incorporating both aspects into the main story to create a stunning film.

The movie tells the story of Aquaman, the son of an Atlantean queen and a lighthouse keeper, whose forbidden birth causes his mother’s execution. Aquaman learns to accept both his human and Atlantean heritage in order to become king of all seven kingdoms of Atlantis, while teaching Mera, princess of the Xebel kingdom, to appreciate human culture. Orm, his younger half-brother and pure Atlantean, also attempts to unite the kingdoms in order to destroy humankind. Black Manta, a high-tech pirate seeking revenge against Aquaman for not saving his father, aids Orm. Every character in the film is given an appropriate amount of screen time, with the aforementioned four having plenty to develop their arcs.

The storytelling of Aquaman’s arc is particularly impressive. Throughout the movie, flashbacks of Aquaman’s childhood show how he initially learned Atlantean culture. Aquaman couldn’t wait to meet his younger Atlantean brother and completely embraced his culture. Yet upon learning his birth caused his mother’s execution, he shuns his Atlantean ancestry.

Additionally, at the beginning of the film, Aquaman is a lone wolf who shows no mercy against evildoers, including his brother. During the course of the film, Aquaman regains his childhood appreciation for Atlantean culture and refrains from making enemies when possible. The connection between flashback and journey makes the origin portion of the movie feel more pertinent to film’s actual adventure.

Another major arc involves Aquaman learning what being king of Atlantis entails. Being a half breed, proving his right to rule is more difficult than simply showing up. Unlike every other king in the film, he travels to nearly every kingdom of Atlantis, allowing him to connect with every kingdom and become a true king. By contrast, his brother uses force to command various kingdoms, and in the end, these kingdoms fail to stand by Orm’s side. Aquaman’s connection to all seven kingdoms is even portrayed through the action and shooting of the film, which impressed me the most. In the beginning he fights like his brother, alone and in an almost brutish style, taking hits and dishing them right back out. The film’s shooting draws the viewer into these scenes through point of view shots, enhancing the feeling of unrestrained violence. Aquaman proceeds to lose many of the following fights. This forces him to learn restraint and technique, as well as teamwork, ultimately separating him from his brother and allowing him to become the true king of Atlantis.

The film’s shooting of later fight scenes puts emphasis on Aquaman’s growth by not focusing solely on him, but panning out to show how many Atlanteans he has connected with.

Beyond the story, Aquaman performs slightly above average. There is plenty of action, which avoids being repetitive. The movie included Aquaman fight scenes, a chase scene and a larger war scene. For a superhero with seemingly limited capabilities, the combat was also

pretty unique. Aquaman utilized basic fighting and more advanced Atlantean techniques and weaponry to keep things fresh.

The movie didn’t feature too many long speeches or expositional moments, and most dialogue felt natural to the character. The movie certainly had its funny moments, with one scene in particular being totally unexpected and hilarious.

However, most of it wasn’t anything too special and clearly not the highlight.

Aquaman is a superhero movie, and thus, not for everyone.

Understanding the references enhances the experience, and enjoying the action is obviously important. Still, none of my family disliked the movie, but Aquaman does have an over the top comic-book feel that could deter less enthusiastic viewers.

Overall, I rate Aquaman four out of five stars, for a beautiful story held down slightly by improvable humor and appeal.

Not everyone will appreciate Aquaman in its entirety, but most will enjoy it nonetheless.

5 Tips to Save for Your Child’s College Tuition After You’ve Gone Through a Divorce

Parents of college-bound students know that paying for higher education takes planning and saving. For divorced parents, it can be particularly complex. Whether they’re paying for the college bills solo or contributing to the expenses in partnership with their ex-spouse, there are a lot of financial and emotional items to consider. If you fall into this category, here are five tips to help you work toward your college savings goal.

If possible, set aside time for a conversation with your ex-spouse.

If you and your ex-spouse desire to work on funding college for your child together, it may be helpful to have an open and honest conversation to align on a savings strategy. Ask your ex-spouse to pick a time to connect with you on this topic. While it may seem formal, scheduling a conversation will ideally allow both of you to set aside other emotions and get on the same page about funding your child’s college education.

When it’s time to talk, consider bringing in a financial advisor to help facilitate the discussion. A professional can help initiate the difficult topics, offer an informed opinion on how to reach a compromise and provide accountability as you divide and conquer the various expenses (see tip #2). Your divorce settlement may have stipulations or a framework to help guide the conversation.

Decide how to divide and conquer college expenses.

Decide sooner rather than later who will pay for expenses like tuition, books, a laptop, a parking pass, and room and board. If your child plays an instrument, participates in a sport or pursues another activity, there may be additional expenses (e.g. uniforms, travel, activity fees) for you to divvy up. If you’re able to come to an agreement, put your game plan in writing to help keep you and your ex-spouse accountable.

Fill out the FAFSA to see your options for potential financial aid.

Regardless of how much you have in college savings, it’s important to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually, starting when your child is a senior in high school. The FAFSA determines your child’s eligibility for financial aid (including needs-based aid, certain grants and loans) after taking into account the amount they expect your family to contribute.

In general, the FAFSA considers the finances of the parent the child has lived with more in the last year when assessing any qualification for aid (and that parent – often called the custodian parent – should complete the FAFSA). If the child has lived with both divorced parents equally, the FAFSA factors in the finances of whomever has provided more monetary support in the last year.

Different factors may be considered in the FAFSA calculation depending on your specific circumstances. Visit the FAFSA website for more details (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/). You may also contact the financial aid office at your child’s college of choice for additional help.

Pay close attention to account ownership of 529s.

If you or your ex-spouse funded a college savings plan while you were still married, ownership of the account was likely decided in your divorce settlement. (Typically account ownership remains with the spouse who created and/or funds it most often.). If your ex-spouse retains control of one or more 529 accounts, consider if it makes sense – whether for financial or emotional purposes – to create your own account with your child as the beneficiary.

Set expectations with your child.

Your child is likely considering a multitude of factors to determine which college may be the best fit – including which one may be the most affordable. Be honest about the type of support he or she can expect from you and your ex-spouse. Bear in mind that this doesn’t mean you have to share all the nuances of your arrangement. Rather, consider providing key details to help your child make their choice – and know who to turn to when tuition or a school fee is due.

It’s true that divorce may add a few extra steps and considerations when saving for your child’s college tuition. But don’t let the complexity stop you. Jordan’s Jungle

It’s true that you can find beauty in the most unsuspecting places. In an old mill building that hosts an array of businesses, standing just on the Providence/Pawtucket city line, you can find a 4000 square foot tropical oasis thriving.

Darin Wildenstein and Jordan Ford were living in Providence in 2012. Darin had given Jordan an orchid plant. A common belief is that orchids are difficult to keep alive. Jordan was determined to keep it alive. And that was the inspiration that turned their home into a greenhouse. He researched and researched orchid care until he had it under control and it continued growing.

It became an addiction. Jordan would go to the clearance rack at garden centers and buy the plants that were dead or dying and he would bring them home, revive them, and then get more. Jordan couldn’t walk through a plant department without buying a few. He would

propagate the plants that he saved. Darin came home one day to find that the two spare rooms in the house were now filled with closet size greenhouses with grow lights and as many plants that would fit. Darin told Jordan, “You can’t buy another plant until they can pay for themselves.”

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! Jordan started selling his plants on EBay and within two weeks, they were all gone. Then he went out and bought more. In 2013, he was selling on EBay, Amazon, Etsy, and his own website. They were both selling the plants at pop up craft shows and flea markets. They would then move on to the flower show circuit in RI, Boston, and NJ. They decided that if they hit their target sales goal, they were going to open a store. Jordan and Darin quit their full time jobs and made plants their main focus.

Jordan’s Jungle is more than just a store. It’s a destination. It’s an experience. Everything in stock is meant to be an indoor plant and easy to care for. The temperature indoors is always warm enough for these high quality plants to thrive. Some plants can be brought outside in the warm weather and brought back in when the temperatures are too low. Nothing in the jungle can winter over outside in our climate zone, but can be kept thriving indoors all year. Inventory consists of many tropical vines, citrus trees, bird of paradise, air plants, succulents, cactus, bromeliads, and so much more. Everything in the jungle is also listed online and can be purchased and shipped to your door as well. And as mentioned above, all the plants are easy to care for. Feel free to ask questions and they will gladly teach you all you need to know about plant care.

Because they started out selling and grew from the local arts and crafts scene, there is a large selection of gifts from local artisans. Items by Coventry Candle, Above Below Jewelry, Dewclaw Ceramics, and Universal By Nature are just some of the available gifts. Darin and Jordan also make and sell their own line of Jungle Scents, a large line of handmade incense sticks. They also make candles, soaps, and lip balm. Near the front counter, you can shop a selection of crystals, minerals, and geodes of all sizes. You will also find a “Build Your Own Terrarium” section. Take your time and get creative. You’ll be back soon to make more. Having plants in the home not only brings life to empty space, but plants can clean the air and boost your overall wellbeing. You may even become addicted to creating your own jungle!

Ask An Expert What is the Best Way to Remove Old Wallpaper?

When it comes to working on clients’ homes, there are two things that I absolutely personally despise doing more than anything else.

One is re-glazing old windows. The other is removing old wallpaper.

I am very fortunate that over the years, I have been able to surround myself with some very hard working, talented people who are able and willing to relieve me of what for me are the most painstaking of painstaking tasks. Of the two, taking down wallpaper is obviously the one that is the more interior-oriented. Arduous is one word that many use to describe this “fun” activity and I think it hits it right on the head. Elbow grease is essential when taking down wallpaper.

Over the years, we have found there to be a few other tools, however, that may be able to assist in the process (the wallpaper must be perforated before these tools will be truly effective).

Wallpaper steamers can be very helpful. Clearly, not everyone has a wallpaper steamer sitting around their home. If you are able to borrow or rent one, although a little cumbersome to set up and clean, many find them to be extremely useful.

We have found that concentrated or ready mix wallpaper removal solutions from the local hardware, paint, or box store, work to varying degrees, depending on the type of wallpaper that is being stripped (vinyl or paper-backed, paste or adhesive, how many layers, etc.).

A home “remedy” that you may find on the Internet that includes fabric softener or vinegar mixed to differing concoctions with boiling hot water, as one example, could possibly be an alternate way of approaching things.

Taking down wallpaper is not an easy task, whatsoever.

Many times, it is a process of trial and error to see what the best methodology will be in your situation. Out of the numerous possibilities, believe it or not, our best

wallpaper guy for years has sworn by just using boiling hot water!

No matter how you look at it, the process is the same: perforate wallpaper, apply “solution” (steam, wallpaper removal solution, home remedy, hot water, etc.), use a putty knife or scraper to take off wallpaper, use a sponge to help remove as much of the adhesive residue as possible, and then repeat until everything is off.

At the end of the day, there is no magic button.

Good old-fashioned hard work is the most essential part of the entire process and there is no escaping that!

It varies depending on breed and size, but small dogs are considered seniors around 10 or 12 years old and larger breeds can be considered seniors at 5 or 6. Most veterinarians will claim that 7 or 8 is the beginning of the senior years. Just like people, as dogs get older, some will inevitably be faced with health problems and it can become expensive. Some dogs will age with their owners until their owner cannot care for them anymore. When someone has to be hospitalized or move into an assisted living facility that doesn’t accommodate dogs, where do their companions go to live the rest of their lives?

Shelters can be overcrowded and senior dogs and dogs with disabilities are the least likely to be adopted. In most cases, the dogs have lived with the people who love them and once at the shelter, they are confused, and miss who and what they have known their whole life. Many people searching for a pet want a puppy or young dog to join their family and be with them for their whole life. What they don’t realize, is that senior dogs can still have a long lifespan and are not always sick. They are loving, often times less work than a younger active dog, and they don’t require a super active lifestyle of hiking and swimming and long walks. They really just want care and love.

Foster homes are usually the answer for the unadoptable senior dogs when shelters need room.

How about a retirement home? Yes, you read that correctly.

Vintage Pet Rescue in Foster, Rhode Island, is a non-profit organization that provides a home for older dogs and dogs with disabilities. Founders Kristen and Marc Peralta met in 2013 at an animal shelter when they both lived in Los Angeles, CA. They came together through a shared love for animals and had quite a few at their home; a few cats and 10 senior dogs. Eventually they moved to Rhode Island and were residing in North Kingstown for a year before the town implemented a pet limit. Searching for a place that would allow them to make a home for themselves as well as the pets, they moved to Foster.

The new facility is perfect for the dogs. There are two large rooms where the dogs can walk around as they please, and they can nap on couches or in dog beds together or by themselves if they want some alone time. They have a large area outdoors to play and do their business as well.

They are one happy pack! As of now, there are 10-12 steady volunteers.Volunteers come daily to sit with the dogs and pet them. The television is on and while some of them watch it, some sit by the sliding glass doors and watch what’s going on outside. Older dogs have accidents and Kristen says “It can be exhausting. I’m constantly cleaning.”

The facility is very clean and the dogs all seem very happy.

The residents are well fed, and they all have constant veterinary care.

Together, the Peraltas have saved around 42 dogs. Currently, they

are applying for a license through the state so that they can handle adoptions.

When the volunteers come to visit, some residents just take to certain people.

Kristen explained how “people can come here and build relationships with the dogs so that the adoptions can be a smooth transition.” Other future plans involve building a cattery for senior cats to come live out their lives.

To say these dogs are spoiled would be an understatement. As soon as you walk in the doors you can tell they are all happy and getting along. They just all sort of joined together in their own little furry gang, although Otto, the oneeyed Chihuahua, seems to think he’s the boss sometimes. They’re cleaned on a regular basis but once a month they have a spa day where volunteers come in with grooming tables. They will give the dogs, baths, haircuts, blow dry them, and clip their nails. A clean dog is a happy dog!

Receiving any type of grant from the state is very competitive and can take a long time. Vintage Pet Rescue has been operating since 2017 as a 501 c3 non-profit organization and depends on donations and fundraisers for food, supplies, and most importantly, vet care. Last year, VPR held a fundraiser at The Guild in Pawtucket. It was pet friendly vendors, music, food and drinks and dogs all day.

It was called Pawchella, like the famous music festival Cochella. They had over 400 guests with all proceeds going towards their animal rescue.

Kristen added that “the main goal is not only to save these dogs and let them live their best lives, but to see how special they all are and how unique their personalities are and show people how great a senior dog can be as a companion.

We have dogs here that were in hospice and with a change of environment, other dogs, and constant love and care, they are now thriving.” For example, Diego was given just a few months to live when they rescued him. He’s the happiest little dog and the vet cannot find any sign of cancer in him at the moment.

They also have an Amazon wish list that is updated regularly. It’s just another way that the public can help out.

What is a Smart Speaker?

Getting started with smart speakers — Google vs Apple vs Amazon

A smart speaker is a device that can not only play your favorite music, but can provide answers from verbally introduced questions, and even control parts of your home via a built-in virtual assistant feature. A smart speaker greatly expands what we normally think of as a music playback system.

This means that a smart speaker can serve as a central information source (weather, dictionary, traffic, directions, etc...), as well as serve as a ‘home assistant’ that can provide control of common household tasks, such as environmental control (thermostat), lighting, door locks, window shades, security monitoring, and more.

Music playback: Smart speakers can play back music like any other speaker, but they aren’t designed in exactly the same way. Unlike the speakers that you connect to a stereo or home theater receiver, these are self-contained powered speakers. Also, you can place multiple same-brand smart speakers around the house so that music that you have playing on one, can also play in additional locations simultaneously – similar to how dedicated wireless multiroom audio systems operate, such as MusicCast, Sonos, Play-Fi, HEOS, and others.

Smart Speaker Core Features

Internet: A smart speaker can connect to the internet via your Wi-Fi home network. Initial setup may require the use of a smartphone or PC, which downloads a specific app that guides you through the setup process.

Although there are no official industry standards on what qualifies a product as a smart speaker, the label is being applied to standalone audio devices that incorporate the following core features.

Music Streaming: As a result of network/internet connectivity smart speakers have the ability to stream music from specific online sources supported by the specific brand/model.

Compact Size: Up until today, a smart speaker has needed to be compact, so that it could be placed anywhere around the house. A small size allows you to place the speaker virtually anywhere (a nightstand, a kitchen counter, on a bookshelf, etc). We expect smart speakers to be offered in a variety of small-to-large sizes as they (or rather if they) gain acceptance by consumers.

Bluetooth (optional): In addition to internet connectivity, a smart speaker may also provide Bluetooth support.

This allows you to stream music directly from compatible smartphones and tablets (without depending on your WiFi network). As indicated, Bluetooth support on smart speakers is optional, but it is included with Google Home

and Amazon Echo. In fact, you can stream music playing on an Amazon Echo to additional external Bluetooth speakers.

Voice Control: A smart speaker has one (or more) builtin microphones, that allow you speak commands that the speaker will follow (based on its functionality). So, thanks to its internet connection, you can get the temperature, forecast, raise the volume, etc.

Why You Might Not Want A Smart Speaker

Virtual Home Assistant: In addition to voice recognition and control, a smart speaker can also function as a virtual home assistant. Possible home assistant features may include access to local over-the-air radio stations, TV, thermostat, and lighting control, message dictation, audio book playback, language translation, shopping (including ordering take-out and delivery), and hands-free phone calling. However, keep in mind that those added features are provided at the discretion of the manufacturer and none, one, or more, may be built-in. Some features may require firmware upgrades, or integration with external devices that may require an additional purchase (such as a smart plug that would connect to your lights). Also, Google Home and Amazon Echo will work with some third-party control devices, while Apple HomePod will only work with Apple Home Kit compatible accessory control devices.When shopping for a smart speaker, make sure that it will be able to perform the tasks you desire - and if the purchase of additional peripheral devices to make some features work is required.

Talking To An Electronic Device: Even though many are used to using voice commands to perform web searches on a smartphone or smart TV, if you haven’t experienced that yet, or just don’t like the idea of talking to an electronic device and having it talk back to you may be unnerving.

Why You May Want a Smart Speaker Flexible Music Listening: Replace your clock radio/alarm clock and compact music system, and stop running down your smartphone battery when at home to stream music to a Bluetooth speaker or home audio system. Just listen to your smart speaker.

Convenience: You can easily place a smart speaker anywhere in the house. Also, all you need is your voice to operate it - you don’t have to search for a misplaced remote control or smartphone. Also, you don’t have to pick-up the newspaper, hop onto your PC, or grab your smartphone or tablet to get the latest news, weather, sport scores, or other information that may be important to you.

Interaction With Other Devices: Depending on the brand/ model of smart speaker, it may provide control integration possibilities with other devices around the house that can be controlled via easy voice commands. Also, using a smart speaker for home control activities, although not as comprehensive as a custom installed system, is less expensive.

The Money Pit: Just as with most electronic devices these days, there is a cost factor to keep in mind. Manufacturers draw you in with what seems to be an inexpensive smart speaker, but once you get hooked, you may find yourself not only spending money to add more speakers to put in other rooms of the house, but spending more to add peripheral devices to control other parts of your home environment.

You Only Want To Listen To Music: If music is your primary use, and the added features, such as control of other devices around the house, is not important to you, then the option to buy an inexpensive Bluetooth speaker or a jump into a multi-room wireless audio system platform may suit your needs better. Although a multi-room audio system can still balloon your budget, it is focused solely on your music listening needs.

Smartphone and Smart TV vs Smart Speaker: You may already have a smartphone and/or smart TV. Although a smartphone can interact with a smart speaker, there a lot of apps available that enable your smartphone to perform a lot of the same home control functions that may be provided by a smart speaker. Likewise, if home control is your desire, some smart TVs (such as some models offered by LG and Samsung) can also interface, via downloadable apps, with some of the same control systems that a smart speaker can — and also add some video control to the mix, such as baby or security monitoring.

The Bottom Line The availability of smart speakers adds another dimension to both home entertainment and home control. Combining the ability to listen to music, with the ability to perform other personal and household tasks, definitely changes how we assess the need of traditional clock radio/alarm clock and compact mini audio systems. Whether you choose to take the plunge is up to you, but just like it is hard to find a TV that isn’t smart, the smart speaker might eventually push traditional compact music systems off store shelves.

What is Topgolf?

What sort of games do you play?

Short version: three-story-tall driving range with bar and kitchen. The range is populated by several dozen bays, which you and your group can rent by the hour.

Each bay is essentially a private driving range tee with a waitstaff. Six can play at a time, all ages. Honestly, it feels like going to a golf version of a bowling alley.

Topgolf offers multiple game options, but the most popular is cleverly called “Topgolf.” It’s basically driving-range target practice. Players aim not at a tiny hole on the other side of an angry lake 500 yards away but at one of several enormous targets scattered around the range. The more accurate your shot, and the farther away the target, the more points you get. Think of it as aiming at crop circles, which are real despite what the government tells you.

If you’re a skilled golfer, the games present a novel if accessible challenge. But if you’re new, intermediate or exceedingly terrible, it’s stress-free because it’s an all-inclusive environment. (No one’s behind you and you’ll definitely not run into Trump.) For instance, our group included four gangly novice children and that spent much of its time focusing on hitting the ball straight, while the guys two bays down looked like they could target and hit individual cars on the adjacent highway. Maybe once an hour you’ll hear someone knock a ball into the delivery machine, which results in a primally-satisfying CLANG and reminds you that you are never the worst one there.

And you can drink while doing this?

Yes! And good thing, because alcohol is proven to make you amore accurate, comedic and emotionally stable player. Also, since it’s a bar, they’re playing what sounds like the Imagine Dragons station on Spotify.

And if you’re there at night, the crop-circle targets light up in a rainbow of psychedelic colors, which sounds like a goofy needless ‘Murica vulgarization of all you love about the purity of the sport but is actually pretty slick.

So you’re standing three stories in the air? How do you not fall off?

Anyone not hitting is commanded to stand behind a Red Line of Danger, so as not to get whacked in the chin while absent-mindedly eating a donut hole. For those who wander too close to the edge, there’s a safety net that’s called a safety net despite not being remotely sufficient enough to save a small housecat, let alone your gangly and drinking frame. So if your dream is to become a viral obit that reads “Idiot Plummets to Death While Golfing, Somehow,” go for it.

Can you bring your own clubs?

You can! You can also bring your own bowling ball to a bowling alley, if you’re awful.

What’s the best thing to eat?

There’s a full menu that you can fully ignore in lieu of ordering donut holes, small orbs of cinnamon-covered magnificence that you THEN inject with flavorful goo. If they have other food there, I don’t really need to know about it. To recap, beer and donut holes and a driving range, so though it’s fun let’s not go counting this “exercise.”
