The Guide to Sleeping in Airports has published the results of its annual survey of the best airports in the world, rated by travelers on factors including comfort, food, services available, cleanliness, customer service, things to do, and of course, the security experience. The top five: 1 Changi International Airport (Singapore): It features five gardens, a fish spa, massage chairs, video gaming stations, a free movie theater, a ton of restaurants and stores, and even a multi-story slide. 2 Incheon International Airport (Seoul, South Korea): It also has gardens and a movie theater, as well as a cultural center, ice rink, free showers, and reclining lounge chairs. 3 Haneda International Airport (Tokyo, Japan): It may not sound as exciting as Nos. 1 and 2, but Haneda Airport is extremely clean and efficient, with excellent customer service. 4 Taoyuan International Airport (Taipei, Taiwan): The website says this may be “the world’s most creative airport,” with different themes at every gate, most of which include a corresponding activity for travelers to pass the time. 5 Munich International Airport (Germany): Here you can enjoy free morning coffee, free WiFi, a brewery, and even more exotic pleasures: a mini-golf course, an ice rink, a seasonal Christkindl market, and even surfing.

Spending the holidays at Disney World is a truly enchanting experience. There are seasonal lights, trees, special events, and much, much more that make the end of each year very special. Just the act of decorating the resort is a Christmas miracle in itself. While most tourists are asleep in their beds a team of decorators works to turn the Florida resort into a winter wonderland. Using around 40 trucks that are turned over up to 150 times, this efficient night crew can make a park sparkle overnight... literally. They work from approximately 10 pm until the wee hours of the morning so that guests do not see anything unfinished. Walt Disney World Resort consists of four theme parks, the Downtown Disney shopping area, and 24 hotels operated by Disney. To blanket all of this space in holiday cheer requires 1,300 trees (all artificial), another 1,300 wreaths, 15 miles of garland, 300,000 yards of ribbon, and a whopping 8.5 million lights. And you thought your attic was full of seasonal decorations!
It’s Known as Dracula’s Castle, to Its Owner’s Dismay
Just about everyone associates Bran Castle with Dracula - except its owner. For Archduke Dominic Habsburg, the Romanian fortress is the former home of his grandparents, Queen Marie and King Ferdinand I, who made it “a happy place of light and flowers.” Today, however, few know anything about the castle except that it served as inspiration for Dracula’s lair in Bram Stoker’s 1897 vampire tale and might’ve once held Vlad the Impaler. Habsburg, 79, who lives in New York, blames the Romanian government. After the fall of communism in 1989, the government played up the castle’s links to Dracula to boost tourism and portrayed its former royal inhabitants “as the mean exploiters of the poor,” Habsburg says.
In reality, the townspeople loved Queen Marie—who was Queen Victoria’s granddaughter—so much that they gave her the 14th-century fortress in 1920, Habsburg says. Since he and his sisters inherited the castle in 2006, they’ve tried to rid it of its sinister feel by adding furnishings and teaching visitors about its history as a royal residence. Soon, “the queen’s tea house, where she used to receive international visitors,” will become a restaurant. Yet he knows Bran Castle’s ties to Dracula aren’t going anywhere. Most of the 800,000 tourists who visit the castle each year—and pass through a parking-lot souvenir area selling everything from plastic fangs to Dracula salad dressing—”come for Dracula,” he says, “but they leave with the queen.
Priscilla Presley Reveals Why She Left Elvis
Priscilla Presley’s marriage to Elvis made her the envy of many, but it wasn’t all glitz and glamour behind closed doors. The pair “didn’t go out” and “truly lived in a bubble,” Presley told ITV talk show Loose Women. “I just kind of followed what he did. You lived his life,” continued Presley, who started dating Elvis at age 14 and married him at 21, though he was 10 years her senior. “You really kind of lost yourself.” Not even alone with Elvis could she be entirely herself. “He taught me, even in having a relationship, about always having a mystique—never revealing everything,” she said, per Yahoo. For example, not once during six years of marriage did Elvis see his wife without makeup on, says Presley, 71. “He never wanted to see me getting dressed. He wanted to see the result of getting dressed,” she said, as quoted by Country Living. While her teenage years were “fun,” she didn’t experience them “as a normal girl.” Only when she began attending a dance class did she realize how unusual their relationship was, said Presley, who divorced Elvis in 1973. “I left because … I needed to find out what the world was like,” she said. “I didn’t really know who I was.” Even then, they still loved each other, she said, and left the courthouse holding hands.
We May Finally Know Exactly Where the 1st Pilgrims Lived
(It only took 396 years) We likely now know the exact location of the first Pilgrim settlement in the New World—thanks, in part, to a cow named Constance. The Boston Globe reports it’s long been known that the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620, but it was never clear exactly where they built their settlement. Archaeologists from the University of Massachusetts Boston had been digging at a place called Burial Hill—a place believed to have served as a cemetery for the original settlement—for five weeks when they made an exciting find, according to Cape Cod Today. That find? The first evidence in downtown Plymouth of a “built environment” predating 1700. The team found ceramics, musket balls, and

more. One of the most important discoveries was evidence that a wooden post had once stood there. “It’s about much more than the artifacts,” the head of the archaeology team says. It’s about trying to pin down soil color and trying to understand constructed features that are no longer there.” Even better: The team found the remains of a cow, which they named Constance, buried at the site. Native Americans didn’t keep domestic cattle. Kathryn Ness at the Plimoth Plantation history museum told Fox News it’s “an incredibly exciting discovery that can fundamentally
change our understanding of the 17th-century Atlantic world.” The team plans to do more digging next summer and hopes to figure out why Constance was buried instead of eaten.

Aretha Franklin stretches National Anthem 4.5 Minutes
Americans were reminded of one more thing to be thankful for on Thanksgiving: Aretha Franklin. In what caused a “Twitter meltdown,” Franklin sang the national anthem ahead of the Detroit Lions’ game against the Minnesota Vikings and stretched the song into an incredible “4-minute, 35-second-long church spiritual.” The national anthem performance at the Super Bowl is typically expected to take about two minutes. One Twitter user joked that “I cooked my whole turkey, ate, and did the dishes” during the performance, while another said it was a wonder Franklin didn’t get a delay of game penalty. At one point in the game, CBS even included Franklin in a graphic showing time of possession on the field. But fans at the stadium were thrilled, applauding several times throughout the performance, per People. The Lions went on to win the game 16-13.
James Corden To Host Grammys
Late-night host and “Carpool Karaoke” commuter James Corden will be behind the wheel at the Grammy Awards telecast in February, the AP reports. It will be the first turn for Corden presiding over the Grammycast, which for the past five years has had LL Cool J as host. It airs live Feb. 12 from Los Angeles on CBS. For two years, Corden has hosted CBS’ The Late Late Show, where his popular “Carpool Karaoke” feature finds him on the road with popular entertainers in the passenger seat as they sing hit songs. Corden hosted the Tony Awards last June, which brought him back to Broadway, where in 2012 he won a Tony of his own for his performance in the play One Man, Two Guvnors.
Original Gerber Baby Is 90 Years Old
The original Gerber baby has turned 90. The baby food maker says Ann Taylor Cook celebrated her 90th birthday. Cook was about 4 months old in 1927 when her image was sketched in charcoal by family friend Dorothy Hope Smith. The drawing was submitted to Gerber a year later when Gerber put out a call for images to be used in its new baby food advertisements. Today reports that Smith explained in a note that if Gerber picked her entry she’d finish what was an uncompleted sketch, but the company thought it fit the bill. Cook’s picture became the company’s official trademark in 1931. Cook became a mother of four and taught literature and writing in Tampa, Florida, for 26 years before retiring in 1989. Her identity as the Gerber baby wasn’t revealed until 1978, notes Today: Previous to that, Americans suspected Elizabeth Taylor or Jayne Seymour might have served as the model.

This just in from the Department of Making People Feel Old: Jaleel White, who played quintessential nerd Steve Urkel in the ‘80s and ‘90s sitcom Family Matters, turned 40 this month.In the 18 years since the show ended, White— who played the character for 10 years, starting when he was 12—got a degree from UCLA in theater, film, and television. He also had film roles, appeared on TV series including House and Dancing With the Stars, hosted the Syfy series Total Blackout, and continued to provide the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in multiple animated series.

A Study Finds Dogs Remember Their Owners’ Actions: As researcher Claudia Fugazza puts it, “most dog owners at least suspected” their furry friends remember the times they’ve shared together. Now a new study offers some scientific evidence to back that feeling up. More than a third of dogs tested were able to replicate a human’s action (like touching an umbrella) an hour later. Episodic memory? Well, maybe “episodic-like.” 7
wORLD NEWS Japan’s ‘World-First’ Ice Rink Blasted as ‘Immoral’
A recently opened ice rink in Japan was advertised as a “world first”—only to subsequently be accused of being “immoral” and “weird” and having “no soul,” CNN and the Guardian report. The skating rink in the Space World theme park in Kitakyushu came under fire for installing about 5,000 frozen fish under the ice, with some of the fish positioned in the shape of arrows and others spelling out the word “hello.” Space World also posted since-deleted pictures of the attraction on its Facebook page, including such captions as “I am d … d … drowning, s … s … suffocating.” Commenters took to that page to register their complaints, with one suggesting “you should freeze all your crew and members that enjoyed and made this program it’s immoral.”
“What a terrible idea, no respect for living things,” reads one post, while another simply noted, “Just no.” Crabs, whale sharks, and rays were also spotted underneath the icy layers, but the park insists those were just blown-up pictures. The manager of the park tells CNN that staff members were “shocked” to hear there was hubbub, citing the attraction’s “unprecedented” popularity during its initial two weeks. Based on the incensed reaction, however, the park plans to unfreeze the rink, pull out the fish—purchased already dead from a local market, per the manager—conduct an “appropriate religious service,” and then turn the erstwhile swimmers into fertilizer. A park spokesman tells the BBC the ice rink, closed and will reopen sometime in December.

New $4.4B Navy Destroyer Breaks Down in Panama Canal
The Navy’s new $4.4 billion “stealth destroyer” USS Zumwalt stealthily broke down in the Panama Canal last month, bumped into the lock walls, and had to be towed to port. The destroyer, which was on its way from Baltimore to San Diego, will now spend time at ex-Rodman Naval Station for repairs, reports the AP, which notes that the ship is the most expensive destroyer the Navy has ever had. According to the US Naval Institute, the Zumwalt suffered an “engineering casualty” while going through the canal. The ship lost propulsion during the incident and also suffered water intrusion to bearings that connect driveshafts to motors. Officials say the problem is similar to one that the 610-foot ship suffered in September, when it lost propulsion on the way from Bath Iron Works in Maine, where it was built, to Baltimore, where it was commissioned in October. When it gets moving again, the Zumwalt will continue to Naval Base San Diego, where its futuristic weapon systems will be activated before it enters service in 2018.
Man Discovers $3.7M Worth of Gold in His New House
Inheriting a house from hoarders isn’t so bad when the stuff they hoarded is ... a whole bunch of gold. A man inherited a house in France from a deceased relative only to discover $3.7 million worth of hidden gold. “It was under the furniture, under piles of linen, in the bathroom ... everywhere,” an auctioneer says. It started when the unnamed-yet-very-lucky man started moving furniture and found a box of gold coins attached to the bottom of one piece. He continued poking around and soon found an old whisky box with more gold pieces hidden inside. By the time the treasure hunt ended, he had found 5,000 gold pieces, two
gold bars, and 37 gold ingots. The entire haul weighed more than 200 pounds and was reportedly bought during the 1950s and 1960s. The Telegraph reports that the house is in the town of Evreux in Normandy, the same general region where three builders found about $1 million worth of gold buried in a garden in 2011. The man has already sold his treasure to multiple buyers, but it’s not quite the windfall it seems. He owes a 45% inheritance tax on the gold, plus three years of back taxes if his relatives hadn’t declared it.

An Italian Christmas Eve
The Feast of the Seven Fishes

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is part of the Italian American Christmas Eve celebration, although it’s not called by this name in Italy and is not a “feast” in the stricter sense of “holiday,” but a grand meal shared with family and friends. Traditional Italians may celebrate Christmas Eve as a vigil or fasting day, and the abundance of seafood reflects the tradition of abstinence from red meat until the actual feast of Christmas Day itself. Today, it is a meal that typically consists of seven different seafood dishes. It originates, however, from Southern Italy, where it is known simply as The Vigil (La Vigilia). This celebration commemorates the wait, the Vigilia di Natale, for the midnight birth of the baby Jesus. The long tradition of eating seafood on Christmas Eve dates from the Roman
Catholic tradition of abstinence. The term “Feast of the Seven Fishes” was popularized because the number seven represents the seven sacraments and nine for the Trinity multiplied by three. Over the years, the number of courses served by most Italian families has decreased, but fish still remains the main feature of the meal. Some Italian Americans serving several courses, with a wellbalanced selection of dishes using a variety of different fish and shellfish an appetizer, a soup, a salad, a fried fish, a baked, grilled, or stewed fish, and a pasta dish. In other households, the meal may actually include seven, eight, or even nine specific fishes that are considered traditional. However, some Italian-American families have been known to celebrate with nine, eleven or thirteen different seafood dishes. “Seven” fishes as a fixed
concept or name is unknown in Italy itself. In some of the oldest Italian American families there was no count of the number of fish dishes. Dinner began with whiting in lemon, followed by some version of clams or mussels in spaghetti, baccalà and onward to any number of other fish dishes without number. Some have suggested that the idea of “seven” fishes originated in restaurants. The most famous dish for Southern Italians is baccalà (salted cod fish). The custom of celebrating with a simple fish such as baccalà reflects customs in what were historically greatly impoverished regions of Southern Italy, as well as seasonal factors. Fried smelts, calamari and other types of seafood have been incorporated into the Christmas Eve dinner over the years. A great way to prepare a Christmas Eve
meal is to combine the fish with the Italian favorite food of pasta. Below you will find a recipe that is sure to satisfy the tradition of an Italian American Christmas Eve, as well as your family and friends. This is a wonderfully rich dish so the serving size is small. You will only need one lobster tail for 2 servings. The lobster shell is used to infuse the cream sauce with more of the lobster’s flavor. It may seem like an unusual technique but the resulting sauce is comparable to the velvety texture of lobster bisque.
Ingredients: 1 (10-12 ounce) lobster tail 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 heaping tablespoon tomato paste 1 plum tomato, chopped 1/2 cup dry white wine
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 large garlic clove, sliced 2 fresh thyme springs 2 fresh parsley springs 1-1/2 cups heavy cream 5-6 ounces fettuccine Salt and pepper Chopped parsley for garnish Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Directions: Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add the lobster tail and simmer 7-10 minutes until slightly undercooked. Remove the tail from water and set aside until cool enough to handle. Remove the meat, cut it into bite size pieces, cover, and refrigerate. With kitchen scissors, cut the remaining shell into 10-12 pieces. Heat the oil in a wide saucepan over
high heat. Add the reserved lobster shells and saute for 3 minutes. Reduce the heat to low. Add the tomato paste and stir for 1 minute. Add the tomato, wine, vinegar, garlic, thyme, and parsley. Add the cream, bring to a boil, and boil for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Strain into a bowl, pressing on the solids to extract as much sauce as possible. Discard contents of strainer. Transfer sauce to a saucepan. Gently re-warm over low heat. Meanwhile, cook the pasta for 2 minutes less than the recommended time. Drain the pasta and add it to the sauce along with the reserved lobster meat. Cook 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Divide pasta between 2serving plates. Garnish with chopped parsley. Serve with Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Cookies •1 cup butter or margarine softened • 2 cups sugar • 2 eggs • 2 cups Supreme Ricotta Cheese (Whole Milk) • 2 tsps vanilla • 4 cups flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda • Few drops of lemon extract Frosting • Powdered sugar • Milk In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time and beat. Add Supreme Ricotta Cheese and vanilla, and beat for 1 minute. In a separate bowl combine last 3 ingredients together and add to the ricotta mixture and beat until well blended. Drop dough by teaspoonful onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350° F for 11 to 15 minutes until bottoms are light brown. Mix powdered sugar and milk into a glaze and frost cookies.

Italian Wine Biscuits
The holidays are here and there’s nothing better than celebrating with family, friends, good food, and yummy desserts. There are so many cookies to choose from during this time of year but one that is very Italian is the wine biscuit. This cookie is super easy to make, and quite tasty; not to mention it’s different than your typical cookie or biscuit that can be found during this season. The dough takes on a lilac hue before they are baked; after baked, they become more of a grayish color. Wine biscuits certainly have a distinct look about them. The rich, wine flavor is great when paired with a hot drink. The key to making a good wine biscuit is the oil; some people use olive oil but that is too heavy and takes away from the flavor. A light, flavorless oil such as vegetable or canola are the better picks to making a great biscuit. So break out the red wine and start baking. Ingredients:
* 4 cups of all-purpose flour * 1 cup sugar * 1 cup of dry red wine * 4 tsp. baking powder * ¾ cup vegetable/canola oil Directions: By Kelly Paterson * Preheat oven to 375 degrees. * Mix all wet ingredients into dry ingredients. * Knead the dough until smooth. * Cut off a piece of the dough, about the size of a pencil or pen, and roll between your palms. If the dough is still too wet, coat with a little more flour and roll again. * Form the dough into a circle, then pinch the ends closed, and brush tops with milk. * Bake for 10-12 minutes, until dough is slightly golden on the edges. * Let cool and serve.

Candy Kiss Chocolate Chip Christmas Cookies
This recipe of Candy Kiss Chocolate Chip cookies has always been a favorite of my family and a Christmastime tradition. They are easy to make and can be made as a single cookie, or added to a cookie tray. There are variations to this recipe, some using peanut butter as an ingredient, however; for families with allergies, this recipe is without worry. Ingredients: 2 ½ cups flour 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 1 cup butter ½ cup granulated sugar ¾ cup brown sugar 1 small package instant vanilla pudding mix 2 tsp vanilla 1 egg ½ package chocolate chips (red and green) ½ cup dark chocolate chips (optional) 1 bag of Hershey Chocolate Candy Kisses or Hershey’s Candy Cane Kisses for a different taste and more of a holiday appearance. (Mixing it up with both flavors is another option.) Holly Sprinkles (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Stir baking soda, flour and salt; set aside. 3. Combine butter, sugars and pudding mix, beating until fluffy. 4. Add vanilla and egg; beat until smooth. 5. Add dry ingredients; mix well. 6. Stir in chocolate chips. 7. Roll dough into balls and bake for 8-10 minutes. 8. Remove cookies from oven, place on a wire rack to cool. 9. Before cookies cool, press candy Kiss in the middle of the cookie. 10. While the Candy Kiss is still warm, gently add holly sprinkles to the top of it.

Benefit Concert
On Saturday, December 17, 2016, the forces behind local music are stepping up to help raise money on behalf of three exceptional charities, Toys for Tots, St Jude Research Hospital, and Wigs for Kids. This children’s benefit concert is being held at JR’s Fastlane inside of the Mardi Gras Nightclub in Cranston, RI. Owner of Black Wiing Productions and E Rocktography, Eric Tier, has been producing Toys for Tots’ benefit concerts since 1994. This year, he decided to add the two cancer benefits to his event. Eric explains, “I want to raise between ten to fifteen thousand dollars per charity in donations and toys, as well as raise awareness of all three charities, and express how they are truly non- profit. Secondly, I want to gain notoriety for the bands who are volunteering to play and the venue for hosting the event. I also want people to come out and have a good time and realize they can do that and still support live music and a good cause, or in this case three great causes”. Tier will also be cutting his VERY long hair on stage to raise money for the Wigs for Kids portion of the benefit show. You can pledge money through the Go Fund Me Page at the end of this article. In order to accommodate all of the bands that wanted to help out, this event starts at 5pm. Good news for those who don’t like staying out too late. And for those who want to rock and roll all night, the party goes until 1:00am! Tier adds, “I believe that kids should always have a Christmas to look forward to. This year I decided to make this event bigger and better than any other I have done in the past.”
The cover charge for the concert is $10 or a brand new, unwrapped toy which will be donated to the US Marines’ Toys for Tots. The RI Chapter, as well, will have T-shirts available, raffles, and auction items. All money raised at this event, including sponsor money, will be donated to all three charities. So there are lots of ways to participate and donate. “I have lost a lot to cancer and know how it affects everyone of every age. Thank you for your continued support of these great causes,” said Tier on his Go Fund Me page. It also tends to bring with it a social calendar that’s packed tighter than Old Saint Nick’s belt after all of that milk and cookie time. Part of the dilemma with going to all of the holiday parties is the pressure of bringing the host or hostess the perfect gift, you know, the gift that not only says, “thank you for graciously opening up your home to us”, but also covers things like, “thank you for all of the clean up you’re about to do”, and the slightly less popular, “I’m sorry I used the decorative soap in your bathroom.” Whatever your need or budget, I’ve got you covered. First thing’s first; if at all possible, always try to find out what the host/hostess prefers to drink. If you know they drink red or white wine, but aren’t sure which type, the rule of thumb is to try to adhere to the middle of the spectrum in terms of things like acidity, dryness level and fruitiness. I’ll be highlighting some wines in a few different price categories that would make great gifts, but keep in mind, some people have die hard wine preferences and their loyalties can be stronger than Madonna’s biceps, if you can even imagine the existence of such a thing. Let’s kick things off with a great find for under $15. Oregon’s Underwood Pinot Noir exemplifies a great balance of traditional characteristics like cherries and blackberries, with a finesse you wouldn’t expect at this price point. In fact, a great deal of Pinot that comes out of this region is more than double the price point of the Underwood, but with this choice, they’ve really nailed bringing quality wine at a reasonable price. For the white wine drinker in your life, pick up the Montinore Borealis wine drinker in your life, pick up the Montinore Borealis White (organic). Fresh and juicy, and with a clean dry finish, this wine is a definite go-to for holiday time.
Let’s talk under $30. Staying within the theme of easy to please, the French region of Jura is a good direction to go. Domaine Grand Trousseau (organic) is a stunner in this price range. Bright fruit notes of strawberry and raspberry are complimented by undertones of deep cherry flavor will excite the palate. Its mild acidity, subtle tannin, and slight similarities to a lean Burgundian Pinot Noir, make this a smooth transition for people who may be unfamiliar with wines from this region. Its quaffable nature and deliciousness will have your friends talking about this wine long after the bottle is finished. Snatch up a bottle of the Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon Chenin Blanc (organic) for a unique white wine that is fresh, floral and fun. This is truly a wonderful gift for any fan of white wine. For those willing to go a bit higher, the over $30 price range opens up a vast amount of wines that are truly drool-worthy. It really is hard to narrow this down, but I’d have to go with Domaine Du Meix-Foulot Mercurey 1er Cru Burgundy. Wonderfully robust wild cranberry and a long lasting finish solidify this Burgundy as the perfect option. It’s a great way to gift a wine from a premier cru without breaking the bank. For a stunning wine that will appease anyone with a penchant for white wine, go for the Alphonse Dolly Pouilly-Fume and experience bright fruit flavors and minerality upfront, followed by a coy savory mid-palate, and flavors that linger well after you’ve sipped the last drop. TUNA TARTARE Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails
Ingredients
1 lb. excellent quality raw tuna Juice of 1 grapefruit 1 teaspoon grapefruit zest 2 teaspoons low-salt soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon wasabi powder 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (I use Frank's Red Hot) 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (I use Fleur de Sel) 1 tablespoon chopped scallions, green part only sesame seeds (optional) cubed avocado or plain guacamole

For me, the only way to eat tuna is raw, and not just sushi or sashimi. So finding different ways to marinate quality tuna at home is a great way to get my fix. The first step is to get the best quality tuna you can afford. That means, buy it in season from local fishermen, like my friends at The Local Catch. Otherwise, buy sashimi-grade frozen tuna at a higher-end supermarket. Frozen tuna is the easiest to slice into perfect cubes for tartare, so freeze even the fresh tuna before preparing this recipe. If you're starting with frozen tuna, allow it to thaw just enough so that you can cut it into small cubes easily. Place the cut tuna in a bowl and keep it in the fridge. In another bowl, combine all of the other ingredients, except the sesame seeds and avocado. Pour these ingredients onto the tuna and mix well. Put the tuna back in the fridge to marinate for at least an hour. When you're ready to serve, use a slotted spoon to place the tuna on a plate to keep it from being too runny. Top with a sprinkling of sesame seeds, if you like, and serve with fresh cubed avocado, or even plain guacamole.

Red Wine Braised Brisket with Sweet Potatoes By: Chef Adam Baffoni
To me, winter is all about hearty dishes. Braising is a very simple cooking technique that can be used on almost type of meat. Typically, tougher cuts of meat are braised because it makes them tender enough to fall apart. This isn’t the quickest dish to put together, because braising something as tough as a beef brisket takes a few hours, but the time and effort are well worth the amazing outcome. This can be served on its own or over any starch you’d like, including pasta, polenta or rice.
Directions Ingredients: 2 lbs. beef brisket, cut into large chunks 1 large sweet potato, diced 2 cups red wine 2 carrots, diced 1 white onion, diced Salt and pepper, to taste Oil, for cooking 2 tbsp. butter
Heat a small amount of oil in a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium high heat. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Once the pan is hot, add the pieces of brisket and cook, flipping occasionally until they are browned on all sides. Transfer the brisket to a large oven safe pan or deep casserole dish. Add the carrots and onion to the hot pan and saute for five minutes. Season the vegetables with a good amount of salt and pepper and add the red wine to the pan. Scrape the pan with a spoon while the wine boils to dissolve all of the brown bits from the pan into the wine. Remove the wine and vegetables from the heat and transfer them into the pan with the brisket. Add just enough water to completely cover the brisket and cover with a tight fitting lid, or with plastic wrap and foil. Put the brisket in the oven and bake for 2-3 hours, until it is very tender. (If you use plastic wrap, remember to remove it before the dish goes into the oven.) Once each hour or so, check the brisket by uncovering the pan and piercing it with a fork. Once it feels very soft, it is done. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. To make the sweet potatoes, turn the oven up to 375 degrees. Toss the potatoes in a large bowl with oil, salt, and pepper, and lay them out on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes begin to brown. Once the brisket has cooled slightly, remove it from the braising liquid. Strain the braising liquid and reserve. Discard the leftover vegetables. Once the brisket is cool enough to handle, use your hands to completely shred it. All of this can be done ahead of time. To serve, heat a small amount of oil in a large pan over medium high heat. When it is hot, add the shredded brisket and cook until it is brown on the bottom. Add the sweet potatoes, about 2 cups of braising liquid cook, stirring occasionally until the liquid reduces slightly and is absorbed into the brisket. Stir in the butter to slightly thicken the sauce and serve.

The Story OF THE Obstacles and Success of Ri Boxing lEGEND Vinny Paz By Julia Romano
Vincent Edward Pazienza was born on December 16, 1962 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Since his professional debut on May 26, 1983, Vinny Paz has been one of boxing’s most charismatic and exciting fighters. Very few fighters have had the same success in the ring and at the box office as Vinny has had. He had won five world titles in total at lightweight, junior middleweight, and super middleweight. Paz won his first world title on June 7, 1987 with a 15 round decision over reigning IBF world lightweight champion Greg Haugen in an epic war in front of a sell-out crowd at the Providence Civic Center. It would be four years before Vinny was once again a world champion. On October 1, 1991, Vinny showed everyone that you should never count him out. He dominated the WBA world junior middleweight champion, Gilbert Dele, and stopped him in the twelfth round. Soon after the Dele fight, Vinny broke his neck in a serious automobile accident. Pazienza was told that he would never fight again, and he spent the better part of three months in a hospital bed with a halo screwed into his head. Doctors were afraid he would never walk again. But during the entire ordeal, all the champion ever thought about was when he would fight again. Those doctors who told 42 42 ShopInRI ShopInRI
Vinny he would never fight obviously did not know the heart of this true champion. When you’re Vinny Paz, you don’t follow the pack, you don’t concern yourself with batted eyes, and you don’t take no for an answer. Against doctors’ orders, and without their knowledge, Vinny Paz, affectionately nicknamed “The Pazmanian Devil” for his come-forward, brawling style in the ring, and his wild personality outside it, returned to the gym with the halo on. He began lifting weights, getting back the strength he lost while sitting in bed. He finally made his triumphant return to the ring just over a year later, capping off an unbelievable recovery. His first opponent following his recovery was former WBC world super welterweight champion Luis Santana. Paz won a unanimous ten round decision that not only marked his return to the ring, but also marked the beginning of major professional boxing at the Foxwoods Casino. Bleed for This is the true, inspirational story of Pazienza’s life as a world champion boxer and the trials and tribulations he faced throughout his amazing, prominent career. The film, written and directed by Ben Younger, and starring Miles Teller as Pazienza was released on November
18, 2016. Younger considers Pazienza’s story to be the greatest comeback in boxing history. It’s a story worth telling, and Paz tells it like only he can. “The movie did not exaggerate on anything. It’s unbelievable,” Paz, 53, told USA TODAY Sports in his thick Rhode Island accent over dinner at Old Hickory Steakhouse in September. “My life don’t need exaggeration. It’s going to be the only movie in the history of the world they under exaggerated. It’s ten times better than I thought it was going to be.” Bleed for This begins at a notable point in Pazienza’s career, which also entertainingly conveys how far he pushed himself and perhaps some poor guidance he received early on as a professional fighter. As seen in the film’s trailer, Pazienza was trying to shed weight right up until the last minute before weighing in for his first title fight, a 1988 bout with WBC World Junior Welterweight champion Roger Mayweather. While he did make the 140-pound limit, Pazienza spent the next 24 hours eating (basically whatever he wanted) to get his strength back, while cruising the casinos with his girlfriend at the time. As could be expected, Pazienza wasn’t at his sharpest for the fight. His lack
of movement, in particular, made him a stationery target for Mayweather to punch. Frustrated by his fighter’s lack of discipline and refusal to make necessary improvements, Pazienza’s trainer, Lou Duva (Ted Levine), tells the press that he’s not sure if Pazienza will box again. That’s news to Pazienza and his father Angelo (Ciaran Hinds), who not only fully intend to continue his boxing career, but can’t afford not to fight. But Duva and his promoter son Dan don’t want to work with a boxer who keeps losing and won’t get better, and thus is difficult to sell for more fights. To wash his hands of Pazienza, and perhaps a hope that a new voice will get through, Duva sends him to train with Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart), best known for training Mike Tyson early in his career. As it turns out, sending Pazienza to Rooney is also an attempt to revitalize the trainer, who’s spiraled into obscurity and heavy drinking after Tyson broke ties with him. Initially, Rooney sees Pazienza as a lost cause and doesn’t think he’s worth the effort. But Pazienza’s persistence
and stubbornness intrigue the trainer. While he has many bad habits to break (particularly when it comes to moving his head and not giving the opponent an easy target), Rooney is convinced there’s enough raw material that he can work with to make a successful fighter. And frankly, Rooney himself needs a project to give him some purpose again. It’s at this point where Pazienza’s story veers from the typical boxing movie narrative and becomes distinct enough to deserve a movie. Following an unexpected title victory, Pazienza is involved in a serious automobile accident which results in his neck being broken. (In terms of how the accident scene is shot, director Ben Younger deserves some credit here for not falling into cliches that we’ve seen many times in recent movies and TV shows.) Requiring a halo brace to keep his neck and spine in place, Pazienza is told he may never walk again. Yet the fighter fully intends to box again, despite the enormous physical risks. His family and friends dismiss the
talk about returning to the ring, realizing Pazienza’s bravado. Eventually, with a little bit of real talk, the reality of the situation will occur to him. Yet if there’s one prevailing theme in this movie, it’s that Pazienza is not afraid of pain or suffering. He actually thinks it’s necessary to make him a successful fighter. This is what sets Bleed for This apart from other boxing movies. The fighter in question isn’t trying to make a comeback because his skills have eroded, age has set in, or he became complacent after success. He’s fighting against his own body, putting his life at risk in the process. Even if you’re familiar with Pazienza’s story and know how this stage of his career turned out, it’s harrowing to watch as he tries to lift weights and train when such effort could result in paralysis. Bleed for This is a pleasant surprise. On the surface, it may look like a boxing film you’ve seen many times before. And maybe Vinny Pazienza doesn’t appear to be a compelling enough figure for a movie. But his story is one worth telling, and Teller’s performance sells it. The role is one of the best he’s had, allowing him to show range that can handle drama, comedy and action. ShopInRI 43

The movie begins in the home of the Bergens, Bergen Town. The Bergens are the evil race that eats the Trolls for happiness, and are a sad and desolate species that look like ugly monsters, maybe even like what we think of trolls as. The Trolls, however, are a fun and happy society of little creatures that sing, dance, do arts and crafts, and are never sad. The Bergens envied the Trolls happiness and found out that the only way to get happiness was to EAT Trolls! Therefore, they create a holiday called Trollstice where they eat the Trolls to gain happiness. The young prince Gristle Jr. ( John Cleese) wakes his father up excitedly, as it is his first time eating a troll. However, when he goes to eat the troll, he learns that it’s a fake, and that the Trolls had escaped! The chef (Christine Baranski) is exiled from her kingdom and forced to forge for herself. The Trolls escape and King Peppy ( Jeffrey Tambor) leads his people to safety and they escape to a new civilization. 20 years later, Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) plans to throw a huge party to celebrate their 20 years of freedom. However, a glum troll named Branch ( Justin Timberlake) warns them that it’s just going to attract the Bergen to them and threaten their safety. Poppy and her friends tell him he’s crazy and go on with the party anyway. The party is going great and everyone is having fun, but they caused such a commotion that they gave away their

hiding spot and the chef finds them, taking almost all of the Trolls except for Poppy, King Peppy, Branch and many others. Poppy is wrought with grief and believes that it was her fault and decides to head to Bergen Town to get her friends back. She attempts to persuade Branch to come with her but to no avail. She decides to go out on her own and is eventually saved by Branch and reluctantly, he travels along with her. Poppy and Branch eventually make it into Bergen Town and find their friends being guarded by the scullery maid Bridget (Zooey Deschanel), who is ordered by the newly returned chef who plans to use the newly appointed King Gristle Jr. to take over. Poppy sees how much Bridget loves King Gristle Jr. she convinces Bridget to let her friends go in exchange for their help in getting her and the King together. However, everything goes wrong and they are captured, as they learn that the zen-like Troll Creek betrayed them and the Trolls have to fight for their lives. In summary, the movie was great. I loved how it had a very animated and cartoony feel with lots of felt-like items and mysterious creatures. I don’t like how predictable the movie was with the theme of love. I won’t give it away but for someone who watches movies a lot and has a keen eye for movie themes, it’s very obvious. It seemed very short too, at one and a half hours. Overall, I give the movie Trolls a 3 out of 6 diamonds.

I love everything about the holiday season: the fresh, crisp air, the twinkling lights brightening the night, the music, and let’s not forget the holiday parties. Whether it’s a work party, a holiday party amongst friends, your annual family gathering, or all of the above – you should always dress with the holiday spirit in mind! I’m a total theme dresser, and the holidays are no exception. Always dress the part. Not everyone may be able to go out and purchase a new outfit, especially around the holidays, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put together a new look with items you already have. Here are some tips for dressing for the holidays. For a work party: Stay professional, but festive. Same as if you were in the office – no super short dresses or anything that is too low-cut. A red or black sleeveless shift dress and heels would work perfectly. Accessorizing is key to taking your outfit to the next level. If you can’t buy a new dress, buy a statement necklace that sparkles, and pair it with black pants, heels, and a dressy blouse you already have. For your party with friends: Depending on the venue for this party, the attire can vary. I love to buy a new dress for the holidays, one that is black, red, silver or gold, and on the more formal side. Pair it with some black tights, and add extra shine with your accessories, if the party location calls for it. For a casual party, you can always dress your look with a pair of flats and understated jewelry. Family gathering: Christmas at Nana’s. What do you wear? Keep it simple, since you’re probably going to be sitting around opening gifts and eating lots of food with your nearest and dearest. I like comfy, but cute, so my go-to look for this would be leggings and an oversized blouse or sweater. As mentioned earlier, accessories are key; so by pairing this simple, comfortable look with a great necklace or earrings and the right shoes, you’ll look put together but will be able to eat and sit around all you want without feeling uncomfortable!

A Rhode Island Inspiration Giavanna Arakelian
Giavanna Arakelian won her first pageant in May 2015 and was crowned the title of Miss Rhode Island Pre-Teen Italia 2015. In May 2016, her reign had come to an end and Giavanna wanted to participate in another pageant, one with a national title. She decided to participate in the Miss American Teenager, junior division (ages 13-15) which took place at the Alpine Country Club on June 12, 2016. At the Alpine Country Club pageant, Kaitlin DuPont of Johnston won the title of Miss Rhode Island American Teenager Junior and Giavanna won first runner-up. Kaitlin DuPont went on to the nationals held in New Jersey and on August 6, 2016, won the national title of Miss American Teenager. Elaine and Ray Paolo are the directors of the New England region of the Miss American Teenager Pageant. Within a few days, I received a phone call from Elaine, expressing the great achievement of Kaitlin DuPont winning the national title; and Elaine also explained that Kaitlin’s accomplishment meant that the first runner up in the Miss Rhode Island American Teenager Junior would assume the title and duties of the State title. My daughter, Giavanna, held that status and is now the titleholder of Miss Rhode Island American Teenager Junior 2016. We were ecstatic to hear this news. As I am Mrs. Rhode Island 2016, and Elaine and Ray Paolo are my directors as well; they were thrilled to have a mother and daughter team as Rhode Island titleholders for 2016. Giavanna graduated from St. Mary’s School in Cranston in June, 2016 and is currently a freshman at LaSalle Academy. Giavanna loves the sport of dance and has been dancing since the age of 4. She dances all genres of dance, including ballet, lyrical, jazz, hip hop, modern, contemporary, and tap. She dances at the studio of Maria Benson Center for Dance in Cranston and has won numerous competitions throughout the New England region. In July, Giavanna competed in the Elite Dance Challenge, a national dance competition held at the RI Convention Center. In addition to competing in ten 62 62 ShopInRI ShopInRI
dance routines, Giavanna entered the modeling portion of the competition which included - photogenic, formal fashion wear and the fun fashion wear; she won all three divisions for her age category and was also crowned the title of Overall Elite Model. Giavanna has always given back to the community, as her role model parents, are also very active in the State with giving back. Giavanna recently chaired the walk for the Tomorrow Fund for LaSalle Academy. She also attended her first meeting of the Pro-Life Club, an alliance designed to give back to the sick, homeless and needy in communities throughout Rhode Island. Giavanna remains busy with community service and most recently walked in the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer foundation walk in memory of one of her best friend’s mother who passed away from cancer. She then attended the Johnston Police Explorers Post#405 fundraiser and then was off to the Victoria Alviti Music Foundation Fundraiser, all in one day. Giavanna is thrilled and honored to be a role model for American teenagers, and proud to join her role model and mother, Gina Sabitoni-Arakelian, Mrs. Rhode Island America 2016, as representatives of Rhode Island.

Designer Profile - Jess Abernethy By Rosanna Ortiz Jess Abernethy is not from Rhode Island. Nope, she’s not. She is a fashion designer who moved here in 2000 and built her business in Rhode Island. After falling in love with the state when she took a trip here to visit family, she decided that this was the place where she wanted to live and begin her career. Rhode Island has many fashion design talents who live here and have built a business with their brands, however, Jess’ story is different and special; she came to Rhode Island and chose to build her business here. I was very excited to interview Jess and to find out why she decided to plant roots in Providence.
Studying in Munich, I noticed that the trends were definitely different from the US. They were more fashion forward and actually cared about what they were wearing. Going to the store in sweats and sneakers really doesn’t happen in Munich. Women are definitely more put together. Being that Munich and the surrounding areas have more of an expendable income, they care more about what they are wearing, and it clearly shows. It helped me to realize that women, and even men, should care more about how they look, and put forth more effort toward their fashion.
How long have you been designing women’s wear?
What made you move to Providence?
I have always loved clothes and would make clothes for my Hot Looks’ dolls when I was young. Remember those? They were about the size of an American Girl doll and I was obsessed with making sure they had good clothes. I have been designing my line for adult women for 11 years now and was educated at SMODE in Munich, Germany. My family is of German and Scottish heritage, and it felt right attending a university there.
I was homesick after being in Germany for over five years and decided to visit my brother who was living in Providence. So I came to visit over Christmas in 2000 and fell in love with this little city. Since my goal was to be closer to family, I thought, why not start my business and life in Providence? And the rest is history! I am still here.

You are the co-owner of Nude Boutique in the Arcade. How do you like owning a boutique in downtown Providence?
Owning a boutique is wonderful and the people of the city are very welcoming to what we are doing. I feel that Nude has filled a void for a one of a kind, personal shopping experience. It’s where one can come in and get a custom item created for a modest cost, or make a purchase off the rack from a local designer. I love having the intimate connection with the woman I dress and I like to see them light up and feel good about themselves when they finally receive the finished product. I feel as though I am doing something good by making clothing for the woman who appreciates it and sees the value in a custom made garment. Where do you see the Jess Abernethy brand in five years? Still living in Providence and owning
a boutique, and hopefully selling my clothing line nationwide! How would you describe your brand, and what type of woman wears Jess Abernethy? The woman who wears my clothing is a career woman who has motivation, and is independent. She wants a classic look with a little bit of flair-sophistication, with a touch of playful. The Jess Abernethy woman is not too ostentatious. There is always a hint of vintage in my designs that is a throwback to more stylish times.

Work hard and be consistent; and only do it if you are serious about it and because you love doing it.

Remember taste, enjoy, and don’t overindulge. You won’t gain weight from one piece of pie or dessert. It takes 500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above your normal/maintenance consumption to gain one pound. If you overeat at a certain meal, accept it without worry. Go lighter on the next meal or if it was your last meal of that day, wake up and be extra good the next day. Everyday is a new chance to start over. As mentioned in last month’s article, take the focus off food. Plan family and friend group activities that aren’t surrounded by food. There is plenty to do and see around the holidays that does not include food. If you are a guest at a party or a holiday meal, bring your own healthy dish, something you love, and just taste the other foods. A small taste can satisfy you. Keep the mantra going, “I know what this tastes like, I don’t need to keep eating it”. Some tips when cooking to save on fat and calories: Gravy — Refrigerate the gravy to harden fat. Skim the fat. This will save a whopping 56 grams of fat per cup. Dressing — Use a little less bread and add more onions, garlic, celery, and vegetables. Add fruits, such as cranberries or apples. Moisten or flavor with low fat, low sodium chicken, vegetable broth, or applesauce. Turkey – Enjoy delicious, roasted turkey breast without the skin and save 11 grams of saturated fat per 3 ounce serving.
Green Bean Casserole — Cook fresh green beans with chucks of potatoes instead of cream soup. Top with almonds instead of fried onion rings. Mashed Potatoes— Use skim milk, chicken broth, garlic or garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese, instead of whole milk and butter. Quick Holiday Nog — Four bananas, 1-1/2 cups skim milk or soymilk, 1-1/2 cups plain nonfat yogurt, 1/4 teaspoon rum extract, and ground nutmeg. Blend all ingredients except nutmeg. Puree until smooth. Top with nutmeg. Desserts — Make a crustless pumpkin pie. Substitute two egg whites for each whole egg in baked recipes. Replace heavy cream with evaporated skim milk in cheesecakes and cream pies. Top cakes with fresh fruit, fruit sauce, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar, instead of fattening frostings. This was an interview I thoroughly enjoyed. Being the animal lover that I am, it was exciting to meet and interview John and Jessica Byron, owners of Bark Republic, and their beautiful dog, Mishka. Mishka is one their evaluation dogs that you will read about in this article. John and Jessica took their passion for dogs and opened Bark Republic on Mineral Spring Avenue this past September. After a career in retail management, Jessica decided she wanted to spend her days doing something she felt really passionate about, so with the support of her husband John, Bark Republic was on its way to becoming a reality. I have visited many boarding facilities in the state based on my love and concern for dogs. When you love your dog the way I do, you want to ensure he/she is getting love, attention, is able to socialize with other dogs, and is in a clean, safe environment. Well, as soon as I walked into Bark Republic I knew I had found just that! It was quite evident that Jessica is compulsive about keeping Bark Republic clean, and I left there 88 ShopInRI
thinking that even a human could eat off the floors. One would think there would be a certain odor in an
animal environment, but not at Bark Republic. I’ve been in homes that have only one dog as a pet and there is more of a dog odor than at Bark Republic.
Bark Republic is a day care for pet owners who work all day, or who just want their dog to socialize; and it is also the perfect boarding facility for those who travel but need and want the peace of mind that their dog is in a happy, loving environment. They offer half day services of four hours or less for only $20, and full day care, of over four hours for only $30. Their 5000 square foot facility has plenty of room for the dogs to play, run, sleep, and cuddle. What makes Bark Republic so different from all of the other boarding facilities? Well, first I have to reiterate their cleanliness. John showed me the commercial Heppa Air Filters that they utilize. These
If all goes well on a leash and everyone is comfortable with the dog’s behavior, the leash is removed. The whole process takes awhile, but unless the dog passes the evaluation, he/ she cannot stay. They do not have to separate aggressive dogs from well behaved dogs because they do not allow aggressive dogs at their facility. They do have a number of rooms and they will separate larger dogs from small dogs if need be, but again, there are no aggressive dogs to worry about. If a dog does not eat lunch at home, they have a separate area for lunch. Another feature that separates this facility from others is its overnight boarding service. They have suites in which the dog can stay overnight for $50. The dog is not put in its suite until 8:00pm and a worker is back at 6:30am to let he/she out. They also offer a slumber sleep over in which dogs are all together in a big, cozy room with beds, and a person stays overnight, along with them. There are not many places that have a person that stays overnight with dogs. This, to me, is peace of mind.

You cannot bring your dog through the front door without proof from a veterinarian that he/she is up to date on all vaccinations. Next, the dogs go through an evaluation process. If the dog does not pass this evaluation, they will not allow the dog to participate in day care or overnight boarding. Jessica was kind enough to explain the evaluation process to me. That’s where Mishka comes in. Mishka is John and Jessica’s dog. They use her as one of the evaluation dogs because they know everything about her, she has been trained by them, and they are her Alpha. Consequently, she’s a perfect evaluation dog because she will listen and obey their commands when she greets a new dog. Shalimar is another evaluation dog they use. Shalimar’s owner, Michael Leamy, is the manager at Bark Republic, so using Shalimar is helpful as they know everything about her, as well. The process starts with the snout to tail assessment. They have to be able to pet the dog’s face, touch the dog’s ears, and touch the dog’s body. Mishka or Shalimar is on leash at this point during the process and they slowly introduce the dogs to see how their social skills are when they are around other dogs.
Overall, what I loved most about Bark Republic was something Jessica said to me. She said, “We really try to accommodate everyone. We allow dogs to have their own toys from home, and we do not charge extra if we have to administer medication to a dog. We treat the dogs the way we would want someone to treat Mishka.” As a pet owner, I don’t think you could ask for more. Written By: Susan Gazerro

HOLIDAY SEASON = COLD WEATHER HOW AND WHEN TO STEP UP FOR AN INJURED ANIMAL By: Susan Gazerro
Unfortunately there are too many wild baby animals that need our help. Every spring a new generation makes it way into the world. My instinct, and I’m sure other animal lovers feel this way, you want to immediately help a baby animal. However; unless that animal has been truly orphaned or truly injured there is no need to rescue him or her. Truth is animals, more so than humans, have a natural instinct for survival. I often joke that they should be rescuing humans. Their instinct is in tune with what’s happening in the universe, it often amazes me. Here are some tips I found that can help one decide if a baby animal is orphaned, injured, or in some sort of danger and really needs human interaction to save it. These are pretty basic but again unless one of these actions is obvious, there is probably no reason to interfere with nature:

Become an Animal Rescue Volunteer Now I know this may not be for everyone, but if you are an animal lover and you have an hour a week in which you can help, please do. Shelters need animal handling, cage cleaning, administrative tasks, etc. Help is always needed and I know it’s much appreciated. Even if you can donate towels, rugs, food, dog beds, etc. anything and everything helps.
Advocate for Animals in Your Community When you see the news and their
is a story about a wild coyote, deer, beaver, etc., or you read an article about any of the wildlife in your community, you have an opportunity to write to the editor or call the news station and share your opinion and help change public opinion about these innocent lives. The story could have just been about a sighting and people wanting the animal euthanized, or it could be about the animals wandering in peoples yards maybe even eating in the gardens. The Holidays Could In Fact Be the Time to Sell
By Amanda Hannon The holiday season runs from November through January. If you decide to sell, there is more in your favor than you may realize. Buyers during this time of year are more serious, and there are fewer homes are on the market, making your home more marketable. First, hire a reliable, dedicated real estate agent who is committed to working hard and won’t be away for “The Holidays.” Release the stress to your agent and allow yourself and your family the time to enjoy the season. Make sure your house is looking its best prior to the photographer taking photos. Remember, people begin their search online, in the comfort of their home. Go ahead and decorate your home and give it its best look. Remember to keep your decorations simple and don’t over crowd your living space, avoiding distracting buyers. Select general decorations and avoid religious themes. Ensure your holiday decorations match your current décor. If your room is painted blue, skip using red. Opt for white snowflakes or silver accents. If your home has earthy tones, accent with rich tones like cranberry and gold. We know it’s time to hang the stockings for Santa but don’t block the beautiful view of your fireplace. Limit yourself to a few hints of holiday decor in each room and leave the rest of your decorations in storage. Just remember, less to pack once the sale is made!
Make curb appeal welcoming. Complete fall cleanups in your yard and don’t forget to clean the gutters. Remember, bare trees expose more of your home. Consider a fresh coat of paint on the front door. With these months bringing snow and ice, make sure to keep walkways and stairs clean and free of ice. Make sure your home feels cozy and crank up the heat. Consider Some New Year’s (Financial) Resolutions this year, or if you think you can find other ways to free up some money, increase your contributions to your retirement plan.
We’re just about ready to open the door to 2017, so you might be thinking about some New Year’s resolutions. What’s on your list this year? More visits to the gym? Learning a new language? Mastering the perfect beef bourguignon? All worthy ambitions, of course, but why not also include some financial resolutions? By reviewing your needs and goals, you can identify some resolutions that are particularly relevant to your own situation. But here are a few suggestions: Build an emergency fund. If you needed a major car repair or a new furnace, or faced some other large, unanticipated expense, could you cope with it? If you didn’t have the money readily available, you might have to dip into those investments intended for long-term goals, such as retirement. Instead, build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Cut down on debts. It’s not easy to cut down on one’s debt load. But if you can find ways to reduce your debts, you’ll help improve your overall financial picture. Many debts are not “useful” – that is, they don’t carry any tax advantages – so every dollar you spend to pay down those debts is a dollar you could use to invest for your future. Boost contributions to your retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it. Your earnings have the potential to grow tax deferred and your contributions may lower your taxable income. Trump Defeats Clinton in Historic Election Donald Trump, the billionaire businessman turned reality TV star who repeatedly defied political norms and conventional wisdom on his way to a hostile takeover of the Republican Party before mounting a combative and acidic general election campaign, was elected the 45th President of the United States, defeating Hillary Clinton to cap a historic rise to highest office in the land. Trump’s election was the surprising culmination of a campaign 106 ShopInRI
that was unpredictable and unprecedented from its start. Polls across a wide range of battleground states showed Clinton holding a narrow but consistent lead in the days before the election. But a race that political watchers in both parties had expected to go the Democrat’s way quickly became a nail-biter, with razor-thin margins in key states turning into a Trump tide that flooded the electoral map. The GOP nominee won Ohio, Florida, and North Carolina, cutting off several paths for Clinton to win an Electoral College victory. Trump was then declared the victor in Pennsylvania, and the Associated Press called the race for him at 2:30 a.m. E.T. Financial markets were already tumbling at the prospect of a Trump victory hours earlier, with Dow futures down more
than 700 points at one point. Clinton called Trump to concede, a Trump aide confirmed, shortly after her campaign chairman signaled she would not address the results until later. Trump, addressing ebullient supporters in New York City, immediately struck a conciliatory tone. “Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country,” Trump said. “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans and this is so important to me.” At every turn, Trump’s unlikely candidacy represented a departure from political
precedent, as a billionaire real estate mogul who had never held elected office became a major party nominee who vowed to take on the political establishment. The first woman to receive a major party’s presidential nomination, Clinton, 69, would have become the country’s first female president. For both Clinton and Trump, the divisive race came to an end on election night at rallies less than two miles apart in New York City, the same place where both candidates launched their campaigns within days of one another in June 2015. In the final weeks of a campaign that saw both candidates facing historically high unfavorable ratings, Trump reinforced the anti-establishment narrative on which he ran his entire campaign, promising a presidency that would be an antidote to a political system he views as corrupt. He cast Clinton as a Washington insider, digging up past scandals and reframing her decades in the political arena as a liability in a year when voters voiced increasing frustration with the political status quo. On the eve of the election, Trump warned of what the future would hold under a Clinton administration. For her part, Clinton tried to frame herself as an inclusive candidate who Americans could vote for, casting Trump as a divisive influence. She brought political and musical star-power to her most recent rallies in an effort to turn out key demographics in battleground states, including Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, and Pennsylvania. The difference in their closing arguments reflected the long-standing differences in their campaigns. Trump, 70, rode an anti-establishment wave to defeat 16 opponents in the Republican primary. He built his campaign on a promise to “Make America Great Again,” painting a bleak picture of the U.S. economy and the country’s standing in the world, dismissing even the leaders of his own party who

Christmas Cheer at the Newport & Aldrich Mansions
For the second year, Marble House will host a mantelpiece decorating competition among regional garden clubs.
The holiday season is not only for shopping and gift giving. It is also a time for celebrations and special time spent with family and friends. THE NEWPORT MANSIONS The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House--three National Historic Landmarks and icons of the Gilded Age in America--are filled with thousands of poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens and wreaths. A total of 28 decorated Christmas trees reflecting individual room decor anchor many of the magnificent spaces. Dining tables set with period silver and china complete the elegant setting. And windows of each mansion are lit with individual white candles, in keeping with the colonial tradition.
Additional Highlights: The Breakers Great Hall will feature the iconic 15 foot tall poinsettia tree. Model trains, recalling the Vanderbilt family’s New York Central Railroad, will be on display in the second floor loggia, traveling around three decorated trees. Railroad and Vanderbilt memorabilia from the Preservation Society’s collections will also be on display.

Hot Glue Heroes Creations of Fond Craft Memories By Jenn Lombari

After looking into my recycle bin at all of the mini golden cans piling up, I thought they would be perfect vessels for my vision of kitsch and craft. Over the last four years, Hot Glue Heroes has grown into a small business. It started when Angela made a few for her own Christmas tree and others for gifts. By the second year, after being so well received, she started to build a small inventory and bring them to local Indie craft shows. By the third year, she was selling her ornaments alongside her clothing line at shows in Las Vegas, New York, Boston, and Providence. This year, her Facebook page was launched, www. facebook.com/hotglueheroesri, and a solid season of craft shows have been booked! The ornaments are available at a price range of $10-$15 each, making it easy for everyone to obtain a small piece of art.
Angela Zampell is a designer and founder of her own clothing label, Mode Merr. Being a crafter and creator of different things since she was a kid, she loves making clothes for her customers; but she admits that hanging out and creating in her craft room at the end of a long day is how she likes to relax. Hot Glue Heroes are mini dioramas created using up cycled cat food cans, vintage figurines, and long forgotten holiday decorations. The cans are thoroughly cleaned and covered with art paper, retro trim, and lots of glitter! Zampell says, “I spend the summers at yard sales and flea markets, and hunting for tiny treasures that will reside in the dioramas”. She also reuses damaged jewelry, vintage floral supplies, and other baubles to embellish her pieces. “There’s a story behind each piece,” she says. “I love giving new life to a castaway vintage toy or cutie doll inside one of my mini scenes.” When asked where her inspiration comes from, she stated, “My inspiration comes from the vintage diorama ornaments of the 1940s and 1950s. Angela’s boyfriend, Tom Butts, a tattoo artist at North Atlantic Tattoo in New Bedford, MA and Anchor Steam Tattoo in Newport is also a
talented painter. He designed and painted the Hot Glue Heroes logo in watercolor. The two often collaborate on projects in Tom’s studio, and plan to work together on some shadow boxes in the next few months. “Developing this small craft business has been a lot of fun,” says Zampell. “It differs from my clothing business because I don’t need to source materials in bulk to reproduce a design in small batches. Each hero is totally unique. But like my clothing business, I have done a lot of product development after taking feedback from my customers. So many people tell me that they keep their pieces that I’ve made on display all year round, therefore; I’ve started making more pet themed and whimsical designs, rather than strictly holiday or winter inspired ones.” Hot Glue Heroes are now produced all year round; and Angela is hoping to make them available online for those from out of town who have a love for her craft. She plans to keep the business small but ever changing.

The Chicago Cubs End 108 Year World Series Drought
The curse of the billy goat is dead! The Cubs hadn’t won a World Series since 1908, which was the longest drought in baseball. They also broke the curse set the last time they got this far 71 years ago. On October 6, 1945, a month after the end of World War II, a Chicago tavern owner named William “Billy” Sianis went to Wrigley Field, intending to attend Game 4 of the World Series with his pet goat, Murphy. But, according to the Billy Goat Tavern website, while both had tickets, the goat was denied entry. No animals were allowed in the ballpark, plus Murphy smelled bad. Sianis, according to legend, threw up his arms and proclaimed, “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.” They had not won since-until now. The 2016 World Series was the 112th edition of Major League Baseball’s championship series, a best-of-seven playoff between the National League 136 ShopInRI
champions Chicago Cubs and the American League champions Cleveland Indians If you are going to endure years — no, generations — of ineffectiveness and heartbreak, when you do finally win a World Series championship, it may as well be a memorable one. The Chicago Cubs did just that, shattering their 108-year championship drought in epic fashion: with an 8-7, 10-inning victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 7, which began on Wednesday night, carried into Thursday morning and seemed to end all too soon. When the Indians rallied with three runs in the eighth inning — including a two-out, two-strike, two-run thunderbolt of a home run by Rajai Davis off closer Aroldis Chapman — the Cubs found a way to beat back the ghosts of playoffs past. After a brief rain delay following the ninth inning, they pushed two runs across in the 10th inning on
a double by Ben Zobrist, the Series most valuable player, and a single by Miguel Montero. The Cubs then had to hold their breath in the bottom of the inning when Davis hit a run-scoring single to pull the Indians to a run behind. But reliever Mike Montgomery replaced Carl Edwards and got Michael Martinez to hit a slow roller into the infield. Third baseman Kris Bryant scooped it up and threw across to first baseman Anthony Rizzo. As the ball made its flight across the diamond, the stadium went silent for one of only a few times all night — and only until it settled into Rizzo’s glove. Then the huge contingent of Cubs fans erupted, and the players raced to the middle of the infield to celebrate. Thousands of fans lingered for nearly an hour after the game, moving into the field level of the stadium, waving the ubiquitous W flags, singing the victory anthem “Go Cubs Go” and roaring when Rizzo held up the ball he had caught for the final out.
One fan held a sign: “Now I can die in peace.” That sleep will no longer be tortured by old memories — of collapses in 1969, 1984 and 2003, and talk of curses of black cats, billy goats and Steve Bartman, the fan who infamously interfered with a foul ball in the playoffs. The heart-stopping end to the series — and the 108year wait — carried with it an additional historical perk. The Cubs became the first team to rally from a threegames-to-one Series deficit since Kansas City did so in 1985 and the first to do it on the road since Pittsburgh in 1979. The Indians have not won since 1948 — and the excruciating way in which they suffered the defeat, with three consecutive losses — will take its place atop a list that until now was topped by the 1997 World Series, in which the Indians lost a ninth-inning lead, and eventually the Series, to Florida. The roller coaster of a game took place in an unusually neutral environment, with so many of the Cubs’ passionate and well-heeled fans finding their way into the stadium. The crowd of 38,104 was evenly split, and the two groups of fans spent the evening alternating full-throated roars, robbing the environment of any lulls. Not even the 17-minute rain delay affected their spirits. When the Cubs went to Wrigley Field on Sunday knowing they would have to win three in a row, Rizzo lightened the mood. He arranged for the “Rocky” movies to be played on all of the televisions in the clubhouse and then shadowboxed around the room while half dressed. Rizzo’s message: The Series was going the distance.
“It was like a heavyweight fight, man,” Zobrist said. “Just blow for blow, everybody playing their heart out. The Indians never gave up, either, and I can’t believe we’re finally standing, after 108 years, finally able to hoist the trophy.” When the rain delay came after the ninth inning, Jason Heyward convened a player meeting in the weight room. He reminded everyone to forget about what had transpired and said that they would find a way to win. “Everyone was fired up, and I didn’t expect that,” Montgomery said. “I expected everyone to be frustrated, down on themselves, down on the team. We just blew a three-run lead in the eighth inning with two outs. The next thing I know, everyone’s like, ‘We got this.’” When the tarp was removed from the field, Kyle Schwarber began the 10th with a single to right off reliever Bryan Shaw, and Albert Almora pinch-ran for him. Bryant, who had homered in the previous two games, drove a ball deep to center that Davis caught on the warning track. It was far enough to allow Almora to tag up and take second. Shaw then walked Rizzo intentionally. Zobrist sliced a two-strike pitch for a double into the left-field corner, scoring Almora and sending Rizzo to third, and the usually composed Zobrist pumped his fists wildly and screamed as he arrived at second base ahead of the throw. After Addison Russell was intentionally walked, Montero followed with a single that brought home Rizzo. The runs took Chapman, who had gotten the final eight outs and thrown 42 pitches on Sunday to keep the Cubs alive, off the hook, and ending the curse as champions!

It Takes A Village to Raise a Rhode Islander • Some villages don’t sound like they belong here. Wyoming is probably a better known example, but there’s also Moscow (Hopkinton), Jerusalem (Narragansett), Carolina (Charlestown/Richmond) and Austin (Exeter). Humble said there’s Palace Garden in Warwick, Lion Head in Jamestown and Jericho/Arctic in West Warwick, too. • To village, or not to village? Depending on where you live, you either go by your village name, or you don’t. Humble said people in Burrillville love their villages: Pascoag, Nasonville, Harrisville and Glendale to name a few. There’s also the popular Pawtuxet (Cranston/Warwick) and Wickford (North Kingstown) villages. But folks in Westerly, despite having 11 villages, rarely use their village names, with the exception of Watch Hill (Hi Taylor!), Misquamicut and sometimes Weekapaug. • You might not have a village. Humble said there’s at least one village within a village, and it plays host to the annual Kenyon’s Johnny Cake Festival. “Usquepaug is a village in West Kingston, and West Kingston is a village within South Kingstown,” she said. Former Boston Celtics Fan Favorite Brian Scalabrine Restores His Hair With Leonard Hair Transplant Associates The bright lights of playing 11 seasons in the NBA with the Nets, Bulls and Celtics never bothered Brian Scalabrine. Neither did his stint as an assistant coach with the Warriors, where television cameras and media surrounded him on a daily basis.
