Airlines Do Not Like Your Sneaky Cost-Saving Trick It often costs more for the convenience of a direct flight over one with connecting flights, but some fliers have figured out a way to game the system, much to the chagrin of airlines. It’s a process called “skiplagging,” which is when a customer books a nondirect flight for less than the direct one would’ve cost, but then makes the connecting city their final destination—meaning they never board the next leg of the flight. One woman tells CNN Travel she’s saved between $3,000 and $4,000 using “hidden city ticketing” about 10 times over the past few years, usually on international flights. “I pay much less, and I’m doing it constantly,” she says. Kathleen Bangs, an aviation expert and former pilot, gives CNN Travel an example of this “modern-day equivalent of ghosting an airline flight” as follows: “Suppose I want to fly from Minneapolis to Miami, and the fare is $500. Then I discovered that if I book the flight from Minneapolis to Jacksonville, Florida, with a stop or a connection in Miami, the fare is only $350. In that case, I could book a one-way flight only, take just carry-on bags, and simply never board the Miami-Jacksonville leg of the itinerary and voila—I’m in Miami where I wanted to be in the first place, and saved $150 in the process.” There’s technically nothing illegal about the decadeslong practice, which even travel agents have used to their advantage; there are even websites dedicated to helping customers find skiplagging flights, the New York Times reported over the summer—and American Airlines sued one such site. But many airlines consider it a breach of their terms, and some will nix frequentflier miles, make customers pay the difference in fare, or even bar people from flying on the airline again if they’re caught. Airlines hate when people skiplag because there are empty seats they could’ve sold to someone else. 4 Shop In RI

of offering a retirement plan and providing financial education at the same time, the program seeks to increase employee participation rates. For hospitality industry businesses in Rhode Island that already offer 401(k) plans, transitioning to the RIHA Group 401(k) Plan can be a wise move. It’s not only cost-effective, but also streamlines administrative responsibilities, eliminating the need for a plan audit. For those businesses that have yet to implement a plan, starting with the RIHA Group 401(k) Plan is a cost-efficient choice, as it comes with no out-of-pocket startup costs or ongoing fees. Dale J. Venturini

Securing Tomorrow with The RIHA Group 401(k) Plan By Dale J. Venturini,

President/CEO, RI Hospitality Association (RIHA)

The fast-paced, dynamic nature of the hospitality industry often leaves little room for thought about retirement. Young and energetic, those working in hospitality are dedicated to their craft, putting in long hours and embracing the endless rush of business. The allure of a career in hospitality lies in competitive pay, flexible hours, and the sense of community that comes with it. However, these attractive aspects do not always translate into long-term security. Unfortunately, many hospitality employees lack access to retirement plans, which is a stark contrast to what many of their corporate counterparts are offered. Shockingly, only about 30% of hospitality workers have access to a 401(k) plan at work, and a mere 13% participate, according to data from the RI Hospitality Association’s partners at Napier Financial. The Rhode Island Hospitality Association (RIHA) is keenly aware of this gap and has taken a proactive step to address it. Launched in partnership with Napier Financial, The RIHA Group 401(k) Plan aims to provide a comprehensive solution for the entire hospitality industry. This innovative partnership addresses several crucial aspects of retirement planning for both employers and employees. The RIHA Group 401(k) Plan helps reduce the administrative burden associated with sponsoring a retirement plan, leading to lower administration expenses for businesses. It also helps employers attract and retain top talent by offering valuable retirement benefits. One of the key objectives of this partnership is to make retirement planning accessible to all hospitality workers in Rhode Island. By simplifying the process 12 Shop In RI

In an industry where competition for talent is fierce, enhancing employee satisfaction is vital. By offering retirement benefits, you’re not just securing your employees’ futures, you’re also making a commitment to their well-being that begins paying dividends today. When you show your staff that you care about their longterm financial security, it strengthens their dedication to your business. The benefits are mutual. Your business becomes more attractive to potential hires, and your existing staff feels valued and empowered to save for life after retirement. The RIHA Group 401(k) Plan is a game-changer for the hospitality industry in Rhode Island. It offers a pathway to a more secure future for both employees and businesses in an industry that never stops. As we take steps to improve employee satisfaction and strengthen our workforce, the RIHA Group 401(k) Plan stands as a beacon of hope, ensuring that employment in the hospitality industry can also be a source of long-term financial security. If you’re an RIHA member interested in learning more about the program, you can reach out to Retirement Plan Specialist Adam Dani, who serves as our liaison at Napier Financial. He can be contacted via email at adani@napierfinancial.com or by phone at 781-884-2354. Whether you’re of Italian descent or simply love seafood, these ideas will help you host an unforgettable Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. Italians love to be with family and even moreso, love to eat good Italian food. Holidays are perfect times to show your family how much they are loved as you create a feast that will knock their socks off. The Feast of the Seven Fishes, also known as Festa dei Sette Pesci or La Vigilia, is celebrated on December 24. This Christmas Eve celebration kicks off the holiday festivities with a huge dinner consisting of seven courses of fish and seafood. The Feast of the Seven Fishes tradition stems from the Roman Catholic practice of abstaining from meat the day prior to religious holidays, which currently is typically reserved for Fridays during Lent. In earlier days, Italians refrained from meat and celebrated Christmas Eve by pulling out all the stops and incorporating fish into a large meal. Over time, this overthe-top meal turned into a custom that many Italian-American families look forward to each

Christmas Eve. Below are some ideas to impress and satisfy your guests. Appetizers - Shrimp Cocktail (don’t forget the cocktail sauce and horseradish for some heat) - Clams Casino - Clams on the half shell - Fried Smelts - Stuffed Quahogs A cool, fresh salad is the perfect way to break up a multi-course meal. Calamari and snail salad are very traditional dishes for this celebration. Along with the shrimp cocktail, clams casino, and fried smelts, I order these salads from my favorite local seafood store and always have plenty of tabasco sauce and lemons on hand to add some zest to these dishes. The feast continues with flavorful seafood pasta. Some sure-to-please options are linguine with clams in a white sauce, or for a dish that is much richer, my family loves linguine with lobster in a pink vodka sauce. I always make both to ensure all of my guests are satisfied.

Dynamic Thoughts

The holidays are upon us; with that, we tend to be traveling on long car rides and hustling back and forth, shopping in stores.

In these times, we are limited in how much personal time we have in our day. Stress levels are high during this time, which can amplify pain or cause us to become rigid. It is important to prioritize some small movements in our day, to offset all the time we spend sitting and stressing out about everything that needs to get done for the year’s end. Here are a few things you can do to keep the body loose, while still being able to manage all of your other obligations.

Be Your Own Bodyguard By Kevin Kearns Recently, I was in the company of many New England real estate brokers. Believe it or not, there are approximately 1.5 million realtors in the US, and most of which are female. I never realized until talking to and working with them, how vulnerable they really are when they have a showing at a home. What most people don’t realize is that the danger in showing a home to what is in reality, strangers, can be a serious cause for concern. The epitome of this is an unfortunate and tragic event that happened to a female broker 3 years ago, in Barrington Rhode Island. The female realtor showed up to the home, and unfortunately, the prospective buyer murdered her. Thanks to Emilio Esperia and Joe Fazio, of Engel and Volkers, we came up with the concept of sharing my background of martial arts for the past four decades, with a workshop, referred to as “be your own bodyguard,” for real estate brokers We successfully ran this workshop for his shop two weeks ago. Then I was able to go to the expo event in Worcester, with my friend Kenny Olson, and meet, talk with, and work with 350 realtors from the expo, to hear the concerns about personal protection for realtors. “The beautiful body” is a program from ‘burn with kearns,’ that is designed to be easy to understand, while also being practical. The system is a blend of many martial arts, such as Muay Thai, Filipino kali, jiu-jitsu, grappling, old-school kung fu, and green World War II close quarter combat. I’ve taken the best from what my teachers have taught me and put it into a system that realtors can work easily and effectively. 28 Shop In RI

We start with a workshop at their location, and then if they want, we can continue with regular classes, once to twice a month, either at their location or via the web. Our approach is simple. We use effective, efficient, real world programming. We have some rules that will guide and protect realtors, and this is also very common when I teach at domestic violence shelters. These simple rules could save your life… • In a self-defense situation, you must understand and follow these rules to protect yourself from dangerous predators and situations. • Being nice can be taken for being weak. Why? Predators often have ill intentions. • Use your brain, your mouth, and your legs, to get out of danger. • When they break the 6 foot barrier, it’s go time. One of the other big concepts we teach is that when you have a prospective buyer, treat them like a potential date. I know it sounds odd, but if you were going on a date with someone you met on a dating app, wouldn’t you plug their name into

Google, to ensure they are who they say they are? You should also check their phone number and do some additional research, to learn as much as you possibly can about that person. Another lesson we teach is to ALWAYS trust your instincts; if it doesn’t feel right, leave the situation immediately. The next thing we strongly relay is to NEVER discount anything, strange feeling or otherwise. What that means is if you start seeing red flags, don’t brush them off. These types of people that want to hurt you are well-versed manipulators. It’s what they do! Furthermore, when with a prospective buyer in a home, always keep your eye on them, while maintaining eye contact, as much as possible. Lastly, there’s a simple self-defense weapon you can carry with you that is completely innocuous, portable, and is very effective when utilized in a self-defense situation. I’ve traveled the globe with this throughout foreign countries, when traveling on airplanes, and no one would think

twice about it. Do you know what it is? Well, it’s a small handheld tactical flashlight, similar to the ones military and law enforcement carry. This is a defensive tool that could save your life, and is available at the reasonable cost of only $9 to $20. This tool is completely portable, and we teach you how to use it as an effective self-defense weapon, for many situations. Additionally, our workshops and classes are quite the workout. My mission is to help everybody feel confident, and most important, safe, in all types of situations! So ask yourself: Do you want to be the victim or the victor? I am confident that you would want to be the latter. For more information about our workshops, classes, and seminars, I can be reached at kevin@ burnwithkearns.com, or by calling 508-4048503. And, yes, I answer my phone because why else would I have one?

Fitness Tips

By Stacie Venagro | 2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro

STAY HYDRATED IN THE COLD WINTER MONTHS: START NOW AND STAY HEALTHY The winter season often brings to mind cozy sweaters, hot cocoa, and roaring fires. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges, one of which is staying properly hydrated. While the scorching heat of summer may make us more aware of the need to drink water, it’s easy to underestimate the importance of staying hydrated in the cold winter months. In this article, we’ll explore why hydration is essential during winter, and will provide practical tips on how to keep your body well-hydrated. Why hydration matters in the winter: 1. Indoor Heating: Central heating systems and heaters can dry out the air inside your home, leading to increased evaporation of moisture from your skin and respiratory passages. This makes it important to replenish lost fluids. 2. Cold Air: Cold air can be dehydrating. When you breathe in cold, dry air, your body loses moisture with each breath, which can lead to dehydration. 3. Physical Activity: Many people engage in outdoor activities like winter sports, or even just shoveling snow. These activities can make you sweat, even in the cold, and increase your fluid requirements. 4. Reduced Thirst Sensation: During winter, people tend to feel less thirsty than they do in the heat of summer. This reduced thirst sensation can lead to unintentional dehydration. Tips to stay hydrated in the winter: 1. Drink Water: Start your day with a glass of water, and aim to consume at least 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon can also count towards your daily fluid intake. 2. Use a Humidifier: Invest in a humidifier to

add moisture to the dry indoor air. This can help prevent excessive moisture loss through your skin and respiratory system. 3. Eat Water-Rich Foods: Consume fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as cucumber, watermelon, oranges, and celery. These can contribute to your daily hydration needs. 4. Monitor Your Urine: Pay attention to the color of your urine. If it’s light yellow, you’re likely well-hydrated. Dark yellow or amber urine may indicate dehydration. 5. Dress in Layers: Wearing layers can help you regulate your body temperature and reduce excessive sweating, which can lead to fluid loss. 6. Carry a Reusable Water Bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day, whether you’re at home, work, or out and about. Having water readily available can encourage you to drink more. 7. Consume Electrolytes: If you engage in physical activities, consider consuming beverages or foods with electrolytes to help replenish lost minerals and fluids. 8. Avoid Excessive Caffeine and Alcohol: These beverages can have a diuretic effect, causing increased fluid loss. Limit their consumption, especially in the evening. Staying hydrated in the winter is just as important as it is in the summer, and it’s crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. Dehydration can lead to a range of issues, including dry skin, reduced immune function, and even an increased risk of respiratory infections. Don’t wait until the new year to prioritize your hydration; start now and make it a part of your daily routine. By following these tips, you can ensure that you stay properly hydrated throughout the cold winter months, and you’ll be happier and healthier for it.

Working out on an Empty Stomach Good or Bad? By: Susan Gazerro

This article is going to discuss whether it is good or bad to workout on an empty stomach. One paragraph will have you believing it is okay, and the next will have you thinking twice. I tried to gather as much research as I could, but it is clear more studies need to be done.

on an empty stomach may be promising if you are again, young, in good health, and live an active lifestyle.

Working out on an empty stomach won’t hurt you, it may actually help you, depending on your goal. Everyone is different, so it depends on the individual. There was a study done and this study’s results showed that when you exercise after an overnight fast, or workout in the evening after fasting during the day, you will burn a significant amount of extra fat and calories. The amount of fat burned during a 30 minute cycle increased by 70% for those who had an empty stomach. The study also showed that working out on an empty stomach is great for young, athletic, healthy people. Although there is on-going research, if your primary goal is weight loss, exercising

Exercising before eating comes with the risk of feeling lethargic or light-headed due to low blood sugar. You may end up feeling tired or edgy, and your workout won’t be as intense as it would have if you had eaten something. For most, a light amount of food will help you get through the workout session more comfortably and with more energy. This is true for any age group, and more so for people who aren’t physically active every day.

32 Shop In RI

Read on to understand why it works best for that group, and to understand the pros and cons for everyone else.

For older adults over 55, it is important to eat something before exercising, especially when working out first thing in the morning. During the night, our body makes physiological

adjustments, so we’re able to survive. This includes breaking itself down to sustain our blood-glucose levels. If you exercise in the morning without having something to eat, for some, the body will continue to operate in a breakdown state, which can lead to muscle loss. As you can see, the evidence is mixed. Some studies have also failed to find weight-loss advantages associated with fasting, when compared to traditional diets. Other research suggests that skipping breakfast may be bad for your health. As mentioned earlier, the hype about fasting, then exercising, may also not prove true for everyone. A lot of people advocating for fasted exercise on blogs and lifestyle sites tend to be those very young individuals or young athletes and in great physical shape. These folks are not just exercising on an empty stomach, every other part of their lifestyle is tuned in. They are in good health, they eat foods that are of high quality and very regulated. Their lifestyle, overall, is very healthy. When the average person decides to workout on an empty stomach, they have to be careful of nutritional deficiencies or unhealthy body composition changes. I feel a lot more work and studies need to be done on intermittent fasting and exercise before it’s safe to say what works for everyone, especially the age group over 50. I personally cannot eat before I exercise. This is why I stress it is about the individual. Everyone and every body type is different. I strongly feel, for everyone, eating a full course meal is not beneficial before exercising. Some may need a little something to get them going. I also feel, for people who aren’t athletes, fueling up with food before a workout may be the best way to get the most fat-burning workout. Try a small pre-exercise snack that combines protein and carbohydrates. Half of a banana, with a spoonful of peanut

butter, a hard-boiled egg, or a good protein shake, will do the trick. You don’t want to fill up, you just want to give your body a burst of energy to power your training session. After you exercise, drink some water, but wait 60 to 90 minutes before eating. You’re trying to take advantage of your elevated metabolic rate after exercising, so if you can go an hour or an hour and a half without eating, you’ll maximize the fat-burning response. This is all general advice and always based on the research and reading I’ve done. I will say again, I am not promoting exercising on an empty stomach. I truly feel this is very specific to the individual and the lifestyle of that individual. Quotes:

“Your body will be around a lot longer than that expensive handbag. Invest in yourself.” “Healthy is an outfit that looks different on everyone.” Shop In RI 33

Opens Doors for First Time Homebuyers with the Return of Its Down Payment Assistance Program Are you thinking about buying a new home? Owning property can be a great way to invest in your future, giving you a sense of pride, security and accomplishment. After all, buying a home is considered an important part of the American Dream. Unfortunately, the state of our post-pandemic economy is providing a sobering reality check. With today’s uncertain fiscal climate, combined with changing interest rates and low inventory in the local real estate market, many individuals and families are making the difficult decision to put homeownership on hold. But a leading local lender wants to help change that. In an effort to make homeownership more affordable in our community, BayCoast Mortgage, a top residential lender on the South Coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, is making a welcome move to help eligible borrowers pursue their goal of purchasing a home, with the return of its highly successful Down Payment Assistance (DPA) program. Let’s take a closer look at how the new DPA program works.* BayCoast Mortgage, a wholly owned subsidiary of BayCoast Bank, is offering Down Payment Assistance to qualifying borrowers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island who are purchasing a home within BayCoast Bank’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Assessment Area. A total of $500,000 has been earmarked for the DPA program, which launched on November 6, 2023. Program funds in the amount of $100,000 will be provided as grants. The remaining $400,000 will be accessible to eligible borrowers as an interest-free loan, with repayment starting in the sixth year. To qualify, borrowers must meet income and purchase limits. Applicants will be notified of eligibility and grant/loan amount at the time of mortgage approval. Any funds will be available to qualified buyers at the time of closing. The Down Payment Assistance Program will conclude once allocated funds are depleted. 40 Shop In RI

“At BayCoast Mortgage, we recognize the financial challenges many first-time homebuyers face,” said Daniel J. Briand, President and CEO of BayCoast Mortgage. “Saving for a down payment on a home can take years. Our Down Payment Assistance Program is the key to opening more doors, especially for those at low-tomoderate income levels, who may have thought homeownership simply wasn’t possible.” The return of BayCoast Mortgage’s Down Payment Assistance Program follows a highly successful round one, which debuted in August of 2022, ultimately helping more than three dozen firsttime homebuyers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island purchase their dream homes. Round one was initiated in an effort to help meet the financial needs of the local community, ensuring that homeownership is within reach for more individuals and families in Southern New England. The initial DPA program had impressive results. A total of 42 borrowers - 21 in Massachusetts and 21 in Rhode Island - realized their goal of homeownership through the DPA program. Breaking down the statistics by county, the largest number of DPA grants went to eligible borrowers in Bristol County, Massachusetts, with 21, which included Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Fairhaven, Acushnet, Lakeville, and South Dartmouth.

Providence County was at the top of the list for Rhode Island, with 12 DPA grants being provided to qualified borrowers in Providence, North Providence, East Providence, Riverside, Tiverton, Newport, Cranston, Warwick, West Warwick, Cumberland, Pawtucket, Richmond, and South Kingstown “The Down Payment Assistance Program offered by BayCoast Mortgage is lifechanging,” said Evelyn Ranone, First Vice President, CRA Officer for BayCoast Bank. “Buying your first home can be a very emotional experience. It is gratifying to know we are truly helping members of our community achieve the American Dream by making homeownership more affordable.” To learn more information about how the program works and to see if you may qualify, we encourage you to contact BayCoast Mortgage today at 877-466-2678 and a Loan Officer will be happy to assist you.

Steps to Manage Your Tax Burden in Retirement Before Year End By: Edward Pontarelli Jr.

organization. This approach is beneficial if you must take RMDs and don’t need the money for your own needs because you can avoid claiming the RMD as taxable income by directing the QCD to a qualified charitable organization. Individuals can direct up to $100,000 in gifts to qualified charities from their IRAs annually (that number will be indexed to inflation beginning in 2024). Another option is to gift appreciated assets, such as stock, to a charitable organization. By gifting the asset, you avoid realizing the capital gain that would result from selling it. Your tax burden can be reduced while supporting a favored cause. #4 – Consider tax harvesting If you do not yet collect Social Security (you have until age 70 to begin) and are not yet age 73 (to begin RMDs), it might be time to tap some investment gains in your portfolio. Realizing gains by selling appreciated assets (in taxable accounts) will add to your tax burden this year, but can help lower your tax liability in future years when other sources of income kick in. You can also look for opportunities to sell positions at a loss and offset some of your capital gains.

Taxes are a critical expense category in retirement and the clock is ticking on making timely, tax-saving moves before year-end. If you’re retired, now is a good time to take a closer look at your investment portfolio and determine if any changes are appropriate. Keep in mind that some changes may need to be implemented by December 31, 2023 to avoid negative tax implications – which is all the more reason to get started today. Here are five steps to consider: #1 – Actively manage retirement plan distributions All distributions from workplace retirement plans made with pre-tax contributions are subject to tax at your ordinary income tax rate. For IRAs funded with after-tax contributions or annuities, the portion of the distribution attributable to earnings growth inside those accounts is subject to tax. You want to balance distributions from pre-tax and after-tax accounts to avoid moving into a higher tax bracket (if possible), which would increase your tax liability. Utilizing tax-free Roth IRA distributions to fulfill your cash flow needs is one way to help manage your tax burden. #2 – Be aware of RMD rules If you turn 73 in 2023, you have to begin taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from traditional IRAs or workplace retirement plans with the first RMD due by April 1, 2024. Beginning in the 2024 tax year, RMDs must be taken by December 31. That means if you wait and take your first RMD in 2024 before April 1, you will have two RMDs in 2024. To check when RMDs start for you (based on your birth year), visit IRS.gov. #3 – Make tax-smart charitable gifts If, like most people, you don’t itemize tax deductions and claim a standard deduction on your tax return, you can make charitable contributions and generate tax savings using other strategies. If you are age 70½ or older, you can arrange qualified charitable distributions (QCD) from your IRA, which go directly from the IRA custodian to the qualified charitable 42 Shop In RI

#5 – Manage your Medicare premiums Along with managing your tax burden, strategically maneuvering income streams can help you stay below thresholds that could result in higher premiums for Medicare Part B. Single people with income over $97,000 and married couples with incomes exceeding $194,000 (2023 levels) might have to pay higher Medicare Part B premiums in 2025 as a result. If you can keep income below those levels, you may maintain the most favorable Part B premium. Even if your income is higher, there are multiple premium tiers based on income level, so any steps you can take to limit your income in a given year may help reduce your premium. If you are seeking to implement these or other significant tax-saving strategies, be sure to check with your financial and tax advisors for confirmation that the measures you are implementing are appropriate for you. Near Retirement? Here Are Five Smart Year-End Tax Moves to Explore By: Carrie McPherson Although tax filing season is months away, the window to make timely tax-saving moves is closing. In most cases, you must act by December 31 to apply any tax sa1 vings to your 2023 federal income tax return.

If you are nearing retirement, identifying ways to effectively manage your tax burden may take on greater importance. Consider the following strategies to benefit you now and in the future. #1 – Plan carefully to maximize the value of deductions Most people claim a standard deduction when filing taxes. The standard deduction in 2023 is $13,850 for single filers and $27,700 for married couples filing a joint return. If you anticipate potentially exceeding those thresholds this year or next, it may make sense to bundle deductions to the extent possible to get the most impact in the year in which you itemize. This can include timing the payment of property and income taxes if possible and making large charitable contributions. #2 – Consider donating appreciated stock or other assets If you don’t itemize deductions, cash charitable contributions won’t be deductible. As an alternative strategy, you may want to consider donating appreciated assets to a charitable organization. This approach can help you avoid the capital gains tax that you would otherwise have to pay if you sold the asset first and then made the gift. Work with your tax advisor to determine the best approach for your circumstances. #3 – Lock in capital losses if selling an asset makes sense Perhaps you own stock (or other assets) in a taxable account that may no longer be a fit for your portfolio. If so, and the asset is worth less than you paid for it, you can sell the asset and claim a capital loss. The value of the loss can be used to offset capital gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income. Any surplus losses can be carried over to offset gains in future years. Be sure you are comfortable with the change in your portfolio before a holding is sold. #4 – Consider a Roth IRA conversion Building up a Roth IRA can be a great way to give yourself more flexibility as you structure a tax-efficient retirement income stream. Along with making after-tax contributions to a Roth IRA (if you qualify), you should discuss with your tax and financial professional if opportunities to convert savings from traditional IRAs and workplace savings plans to a Roth IRA are a good choice 52 Shop In RI

for you. Be strategic in doing so. You may want to convert only as much in a single year as possible without moving into a higher tax bracket (taxes will be due on some or all of the converted amount). Roth conversions make the most sense if you anticipate being in a higher tax bracket in retirement. A Roth conversion will not always make sense, so it’s important to consider your personal situation as you make your choice. #5 – Use FSA dollars If you’ve taken the tax-saving step of setting money aside in a Flexible Spending Account to help with out-ofpocket medical expenses, check your balance. FSAs allow you to set pre-tax dollars aside and use the funds to pay for certain medical and dental expenses such as deductibles, copays, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and medical equipment. Check your employer’s FSA rules to see if they extend a grace period to spend dollars (up to mid-March 2024) or allow some leftover money to be carried over into an FSA for next year. If neither option is offered, you need to spend your balance in 2023 or you will forfeit leftover dollars. As you consider tax strategies to benefit you now and, in the future, consult with an advisor and tax professional to see if any of these actions make sense for you. Carrie A. Meet The Dream Team: Javier R. Alfonzo Each month, Shop in RI Magazine profiles one member of a weekly business networking group called “The Dream Team,” that meets in Smithfield. In this issue, we meet Javier R. Alfonzo of Sente Stoneworks, LLC, in Pawtucket. Javier’s business began last May, after working in graphic design and other industry jobs for more than a decade. He fancies creating a work that is memorable for his clients. They are looked upon as keepsakes for their longevity and craftsmanship that goes into each project. Do not think Javier takes his time because the job is easy. There is a process involved that takes precision and patience. The mark of his work is paying attention to detail. Javier said that there are no rushing projects of this magnitude. “These are works of art that take plenty of time to compile. It can take 6-8 hours a day, for months, to get the lettering, relief work, and/or sculpture down perfectly. It takes plenty of time and awareness to make the stone carving stand out.”

He focuses on memorials of all kinds, interior architectural design elements, and fine art stone carvings, among other works. Projects can take between 1-3 years, based on the materials needed, importing them, and the time needed to complete them. As for joining the Dream Team, Javier said that it was a great opportunity for him to interact with other professionals, learn from their experiences, and educate them about his services. “As artists, we are secluded in a space for months at a time. We usually don’t get a chance to go out and meet other people. This was my opportunity to make that happen,” he said. “The Dream Team” currently has 20 members. They meet every Wednesday morning, from 7:00 AM until 8:30 AM, at the Home2Suites Hilton on Douglas Pike (Rte. 7) in Smithfield, across from Laura’s Bar and Grill. The group is looking to grow its chapter and is interested in meeting professionals from various industries, including HVAC, event planning, personal injury attorneys, and photography. Further information about the group may be found by contacting either President Rocco Elgar at 401-265-0857 or at therockhbi@msn. com, or Vice President Tim Richard at 401-7664200 or at tim@estenandrichardinsurance.com.

Javier’s foray into calligraphy is what launched him into his career. His love of letters started with casual sketches, using fountain pens before moving to professional instruments, like metal nibs, ink sticks, and pencils, where he diligently builds them to perfection. In November 2010, a three-hour elective course at a Boston Calligraphy Conference on stone carving set his direction, professionally. Shop In RI 67 Shop In RI 67

How to Get Tape (and Other Adhesives) off a Wall Many of those who know me are aware that I am a bit of an early bird. So much so, that my haircut each Saturday morning typically occurs around 5am or so. Sometimes a little later, sometimes a bit earlier, but on average, 5am would be a safe bet, as to where you would find me on a Saturday morning, having my weekly trim (yes, because I have SO MUCH hair to begin with). Right after me, a RI State Trooper buddy of mine is usually next up as he prepares for his day, as well. Even in these early hours, typical barbershop banter occurs, while the majority of those in our neck of the world are still fast asleep. Recently, as I was in the barber chair at the tail end of my haircut, my friend walked in, and after a short time of sitting down, blurted out (paraphrasing), Hey, I have this super strong double-sided sticky tape that just will not come off the wall, no matter what I try. He then asked what I would recommend doing that would cause the least amount of damage to the wall? As you may have guessed, I love when folks ask me questions like this [hence the creation of the weekly radio show! (PROTalk Home Improvement Radio, every Saturday @ 2pm on WPRO 630AM & 99.7FM in RI). With little hesitation, after a few clarifying questions, I relayed a procedure which I thought would not only be able to help remove the tape and its accompanying adhesive, but would do so in a fashion that would create minimal collateral damage to the wall, as well as the areas around it. There is a product known as ‘GOOF OFF’ that can be bought at pretty much any hardware, paint, or big box store. There are definitely other products which may do the trick, but the ones I am most aware of are much less aggressive and more suitable for helping in similar situations, where a heavier hand may not be as necessary (an example would be the removal of regular Scotch tape and its associated adhesive or something along those lines). For situations where a more robust approach must be taken (such as in the case of my friend, where the product remaining on the wall was used to hang a baby monitor), after years of trying different methods, I believe GOOF OFF is the best bet. Please keep in mind that there is a bit of an odor that does come 68 Shop In RI

along with using GOOF OFF, and you should definitely keep this in mind, as you go about its use. The method I recommended to my friend is one that could help in a variety of similar dilemmas:

~ Saturate (though not to the point where it is dripping!) the area that you are trying to remove the tape & its adhesive. ~ Wait 5 minutes. ~ Use a stiff putty knife to remove the adhesive. ~ Repeat until the adhesive is off. ~ Clean the area with warm water and Dawn (my brand preference) dish detergent (this serves as a degreaser). ~ Rinse the area with a warm cloth to make sure the soap residue is removed ~ After things have dried out, evaluate the wall to see if any minor surface/paint correction needs to take place, and if so, proceed appropriately to do so. If you find yourself in a similar situation, you will be surprised at how easily the area cleans up, using this process. Although being at the barbershop prior to the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning may not necessarily be the most ideal time for folks to get their haircut, there certainly are bonuses in doing so, such as helping each other in navigating annoyingly frustrating situations, including a stubborn piece of thick tape that purely does not want to budge off a wall!

Come to Toyota of Smithfield By Mark Berger

Toyota of Smithfield, located on George Washington Highway near the Smithfield/Lincoln town line, has new and certified, preowned vehicles on their lots. Regardless of which type of car or truck you desire, the dealership has the knowledge to make the car-purchasing process easy. General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for their next vehicle will work with their award-winning sales department to take advantage of dealer incentives. “Anyone who trades in either their used or certified, pre-owned cars, will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There won’t be a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more now than its ever going to be worth.” For those who already possess their dream vehicle, they should visit their award-winning service department to keep their vehicles running smoothly. Their highly-trained staff are adept at diagnosing the small problems that can turn into major headaches if left unattended. With their inventory still lower than normal, Durrani said that they want any available used cars. There are several incentives designed to get someone out of their older car and potentially into a more suitable one. “We ask the community to bring in their used vehicles. Simply put, we lack the available inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said.

To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to buy a car from their lot. “We will purchase your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” he added. The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Saturday, December 30, and Sunday, December 31, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives. The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front, and the best available leasing and financing terms also offered up front. Durrani said that this is just part of the allaround, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication. The Holiday Season Brings out the Good in People Around the Globe By Julia Romano

As Americans, we are all familiar with Christmas traditions in our country, such as putting up lights and festive decorations, having Christmas trees and nativity scenes, attending religious celebrations, such as candlelit services or Midnight Mass, and for the children, making plans for Santa Claus’s visit. But how do the people of other countries celebrate and what are their holiday customs? In current times, as our world seems to be in turmoil, it is important to recognize that all countries have many citizens who are good and honest people, just like here in our own country. We should also acknowledge and celebrate the fact that the good nature of the people of the world seems to be most prevalent during the holiday season. From fun, quirky traditions to more unusual customs, and those that compare to ones in the US, here are just some Christmas traditions of other countries. CHINA, KOREA, JAPAN, and VIETNAM: BODHI DAY Those who practice Buddhism celebrate Bodhi Day each December 8. The day honors Buddha’s enlightenment, which is said to have happened under the Bodhi tree—which is how the holiday got its name. The holiday is observed primarily in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, though Buddhists from around the world celebrate Bodhi Day. The day is observed with meditation and acts of kindness. GERMANY In some German households, the Christmas tree is not revealed until Christmas Eve. Instead, an advent wreath is put on the dining room table on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. The wreaths have four large candles on them and each one is lit every Sunday. December 5th is marked as St. Nicholas’ Day - a very exciting day for the kids. Children leave freshly polished boots outside their bedroom door before bedtime. St. Nicholas and his assistant will visit their homes overnight and leave presents in their boots for them to open the next morning. 74 Shop In RI 74 74 Shop Shop In In RI RI

ISRAEL Christmas in Israel generally coincides with Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of light, which diffuses a festive spirit across the land. This year, Christmas takes place on December 25, 2023 and Hanukkah takes place from December 7-15, 2023. Christmas in Israel is said to be unlike any other place in the world, and is known as the holiest site in Christianity. People can celebrate by walking Jesus’ steps! Special Christmas services are held throughout the Holy Land in Christian churches, along with Christmas concerts, markets, bazaars, parades, services, and events. Though it’s not a public holiday in Israel (the main religions of Israel being Judaism and Islam), it’s an extremely meaningful place at Christmastime. Israel is the actual land where the nativity story took place. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judaism’s holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which falls during September or October. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world, and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days.”

RUSSIA In Russia, Christmas is a family holiday. Traditionally, most Russians celebrate it with their relatives and loved ones. During this time of love and forgiveness, people present their Christmas gifts to each other to show their affinity, or just to make others a little bit happier. When the fast is over, families begin a celebration meal. Traditionally, the Russian Christmas fare includes gherkins, pickled mushrooms, pickled apples, and sour-crout. Russians decorate their homes with fairy lights, stars, and сutouts in the form of angels, as well as a Christmas tree. SOUTHERN AFRICA - THE CARIBBEAN Kwanzaa was created in the United States in 1966, by Black nationalist Maulana Karenga, to unite and empower Black Americans in light of the Watts Rebellion, and is primarily celebrated in the US and the Caribbean. The holiday is modeled after traditional African harvest festivals. Though its practices have roots in Southern African culture, Kwanzaa is a celebration of diasporic African family, community, and culture, especially those of Black Americans. The seven-day celebration begins the day after Christmas and lasts until the new year, with each day representing principles, known as Nguzo Saba, honoring faith, family, and community. Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday rather than a religious one, though it does have an inherent spiritual significance.

ITALY Christmas in Italy is a very special time. Much of Italy is Catholic and the Vatican is in Rome, so the opportunities to experience age-old traditions will enrich your December trip to Italy. La Festa di San Silvestro, New Year’s Eve, is celebrated all over Italy with a special traditional dinner, fireworks, music and dancing, and prosecco, Italian sparkling wine. The Fat Ox Fair is held in Bologna on New Year’s Eve. Age-old New Year’s traditions like throwing your old things out the window to symbolize your readiness to accept the New Year and wearing red underwear to ring in the New Year for good luck are still carried out, especially in the south. MEXICO Believed to have originated in Mexico via Spanish missionaries, Las Posadas (meaning inns), are nightly processionals for the nine days preceding Christmas Eve. The posadas recreate the tradition of Jesus and Mary seeking shelter, and typically involves lots of singing and children dressed as angels. Eventually, each posada ends the night at someone’s pre-selected home, where, after initially being turned away, they’re welcomed with the likes of tamales and Christmas punch. The posada party isn’t over until the ceremonial whacking of the candy-filled piñata, often a seven-pointed star representing the seven deadly sins that need to be smashed. Shop In RI 75
