Making Pizza into a Work of Art

By Patrick Burke Eric Palmieri has a rich history in pizza making, and this fifth generation baker puts a different spin on pies at Johnston’s D. Palmieri’s Bakery. This Van Gogh of dough, sauce and cheese creations can look too good to want to slice and gobble up, but he says it’s perfectly okay.

That was the genesis of Palmieri’s pizza canvas genius.

“People tell me all the time that they feel bad cutting the pizzas and eating them,” Palmieri said. “What I tell them is, ‘take a picture and eat up!’ People do this with cakes.

What I’m waiting for is for someone to start the trend of putting candles on a pizza instead of celebrating with a cake. That would be something!”

“I’m basicallythinking about it all the time, even when I’m not working,” Palmieri said. Food art, in general, is not something that I see a lot of people doing (although there is a growing community here in Rhode Island – Allie’s Donuts does some really fun things with their giant donut cakes, colored sprinkles and frosting – and we all seem to support and push one another, which is pretty awesome).

There isn’t a manual or school of techniques, so I’m always thinking about new ways to manipulate ingredients in order to improve the quality of the pizza art.”

With a table full of toppings as his palette, Palmieri has turned a varied list of ingredients into everything from sports’ stars, to cartoons, and anything you can imagine in between. When Palmieri saw a 4th of July American flag cake made with “strawberry stripes and blueberry stars,” he thought, “why not replicate the idea with pepperoni and black olives.”

Eric’s great-great-grandfather, Domenico Palmieri, founded the original Palmieri’s Bakery on Federal Hill in 1905. In the 1970s, Eric’s grandfather Domenic, opened his own storefront, D. Palmieri’s Bakery, on Killingly Street in Johnston. Eric has worked there since 2006. The original Palmieri’s Bakery location was purchased from Eric’s uncle (his grandfather’s brother) approximately 20 years ago,

then new owners expanded locations around the state. The Johnston location is the only family-run bakery remaining.

“It’s pretty crazy to think about,” Palmieri said.

“In terms of how much history there is with my family and Italian baking.”

At D. Palmieri’s, you can get everything from NY-style slices to pastries, bread, stuffed calzones that make your mouth water, Italian market prepared foods that are made fresh every day, and much more, but where they really go outside the realm of your everyday pizza place or bakery is with Eric’s custom pizza portrait designs.

Eric has a separate website to show off his previous pizza works, which cover all angles of pop culture and show off seriously unique skills in crafting with creative toppings. He’s had breakthroughs with mixing ingredients, creating different shades, and has experimented with toppings.

“As an example, for the color grey, I used to use mushrooms, however, there is quite a variation in tones with mushrooms, from white to grey to black. In order to get a more consistent hue, I figured out that I could mix white grated cheese with black pepper powder. Depending on what shade of grey I want, I can add more or less pepper. Then, I use oil to bond the two ingredients together. It’s a lot like mixing paints, actually. The color is much more consistent and also easier to mold, shape, and work with, in general,” said Palmieri.

“Another example of mixing ingredients is the tennis ball pizza,” Palmieri continued. “Where I chopped green and yellow bell peppers so small that I was able to mix them together to create the color of a tennis ball that is neither yellow, nor green, but actually a combination of the two. Then, I sprinkled it with oil and grated cheese to give it a ‘fuzzy’ look.”

Palmieri chopped spinach to get that perfect Frankenstein-skin green, but went with green peppers for Oscar the Grouch and The Grinch since that shade “is more vibrant and

cartoonish.” There’s also an eye-catching Celtics’ shamrock that’s colored green with basil leaves.

The strangest ingredient he’s used was purple potatoes, which create a “super vibrant” purple hue, but the color can be compromised if sliced too thin. It shows up menacingly on his Joker. Mozzarella can create a delicious white, while breaded eggplant can make a tasty, textured beard or a coat of Wookie fur.

“There’s a lot of thought and preparation that goes into it and a bit of trial and error too,” Palmieri said. “There are many variables that I need to consider when creating these pizzas, aside from the way they look-like how they will taste and how they will cook! I realized rather quickly that if I’m going to use American cheese for eyeballs or letters, that I need to use two slices instead of one, otherwise, the cheese melts too much, becomes transparent and the colors underneath start to show through.”

Palmieri tries to be consistent with creating one or two new designs a week, and his gallery shows quite an imaginative array and a prodigious output. He stressed that adjustments can be made for custom orders, like red peppers instead of pepperoni for vegetarians.

“I absolutely welcome and encourage people to contact me with custom design requests,” Palmieri said. “I always try to work with customers to create a pizza design that is visually pleasing, delicious and fits within their budget.”

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

BABY BELL PEPPERS WITH FRESH CORN STUFFING I came up with this crunchy appetizer a few years ago, when I needed a tasty bite for one of our summer parties. I wanted something fresh that highlighted the veggies of the season, so when I spotted these baby bell peppers in the supermarket, I got the idea.

I get requests for the recipe every year. (I grow my own baby bell peppers, but when we’re talking about feeding a large party, it’s time to go to the supermarket! ) I went to Twitter for some help.

Since I follow a number of chefs, I asked the question: I’m cooking for a real chef for the first time. What’s the #1 tip you can give me? Only one chef answered, but it was none other than Andrew Zimmern, and

Ingredients: * Baby bell peppers * 6 ears fresh corn, removed from the cob…or organic f rozen corn * 1/2 Vidalia onion, peeled, quartered, grilled, chopped * 1 cup mayonnaise * 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (I use Frank’s Red Hot) * 6 oz. feta cheese or Queso * Fresco, crumbled * Juice of 1 lime * Pinch of white pepper * 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped 14 ShopInRI

he said simply: “Be yourself.” Be myself? Yeah…I think I can fake that!

Cut the corn kernels from the ears, and sauté them very briefly in a little olive oil.

Place them in a bowl and let them cool.

Peel and quarter the Vidalia onion, and throw it on a hot grill with a little olive oil to get some nice grill marks on it, leaving the onion still crispy, not soft. If you’re cooking indoors, throw the quartered onion in a hot pan with a little olive oil, and cook it until you get some brown marks on it. Remove it, let cool, then place it in a food processor and pulse it until the onion is chopped into small bits, just smaller than the corn kernels. Add the onions to the corn.

In a separate small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and the Frank’s Red Hot. Pour in the crumbled cheese and mix well. Pour this into the corn and onion bowl and mix well.

Add the lime juice, white pepper and parsley to the bowl and mix well again.

Cut the baby bell peppers in half lengthwise, and remove the seeds and membrane.

Stuff the peppers with the corn mixture and garnish with cilantro or parsley.

If you’re preparing this ahead of time, refrigerate the stuffed peppers until you’re ready to eat, but allow some time for them to warm up to a cool, not cold, temperature.

Anawan Farm:

Certified Organic Certified Family

By: Jenn Lombari Not far from the Rhode Island border is a family farm that was built on love.

Anawan Farm started with 2 acres of blueberry bushes planted by Gabi Salisbury’s grandfather. Her father continued to keep the farm producing when he started conventionally growing butternut squash. He was the main squash farmer in the area for over 20 years; selling to local markets until the times caught up with local farmers and made them follow FSMA regulations and go through big corporations to sell their product.

There isn’t much squash anymore and blueberries became less of a concern.

But Anawan Farm continues to thrive as a five generation farm with Gabi and Pam Salisbury and their son and daughter running the show. About five years ago, Pam and Gabi both lost

their mothers unexpectedly. Gabi’s mother had been growing zinnias for 30 years. Growing flowers seemed like a way that they could both honor the memory of their mothers and keep Gabi’s dad busy on the farm.

They asked if they could have a small piece of land to start a garden and they planted a simple row of zinnias. Soon, they had more than they knew what to do with. It seemed like a nice thing to do at the time; set up a small table by the roadside and sell zinnias using the honor system. People driving by could stop, take the fresh cut flowers home and leave the money in the cash box.

Every day, all the flowers were gone and customers were respecting the system.

From that little space they were given to grow a row of zinnias, Pam and

Gabi are now in charge of four acres of active farm. As of 2019 Anawan Farm has been certified ORGANIC, and they are one of the only farms in the area that can claim this. The vegetables that they are growing organically are local favorites. Some of what they grow is snap peas, different types of lettuce, kales, basil, radishes, cucumbers, summer squash and more.

Other organic items that are provided by nearby farms are fresh eggs, fruits, carrots, onions…the list goes on. It’s best to just stop in. They even started a small strawberry crop this year! The farm stand still operates on the honor system Tuesday-Friday 1pm-6:30pm and one of their 5 workers or 5 volunteers will be at the farm stand on the weekend 10am-6:30pm to help you and answer any questions you may have. Pam and Gabi do hope to staff

the farm stand full time but you can’t rush a good thing.

In addition to zinnias, Anawan Farm grows and sells over 50,000 sunflowers yearly! The flower fields are not organic yet but are in transition and will be certified organic as soon as possible. However, you can buy confidently, knowing that the flowers are all herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free.

They don’t plan to sell their vegetables in any large supermarkets but they will continue to sell at local farmers markets as well as their farm stand. Pam enjoys meeting the people she sells to and educating the public on the process and importance of organic local produce. She commented that “Your food can be local! It’s the freshest and you can tell the difference.”

People enjoy this local farm and what they grow so much, that over thirty people take part in the farms Community Supported Agriculture program. Pam explained that it is sort of like a Kickstarter program for fresh produce. Around February, they make the announcement on their website and Facebook page and allow people to sign up. Essentially, you are paying ahead of time for a weekly box of fresh picked produce throughout the season. The farm stand is open certain hours for people that are part of the CSA program. They can come and fill their box with whatever they’d like vs the boxes being filled already and just waiting for pick up.

This allows each person to pick what they like.

It works better this way because not everybody has the same taste.

Comic Con, Eternal Con, Chiller Theatre, and Auto Show have been staples of large themed shows, drawing huge crowds of die-hard fans. Now, on November 23-24, you can add Sopranos Con, an event organized in honor of the HBO blockbuster show that dazzled the nation.

The show is the “brain-child” of Michael Mota, Rhode Island Native and his two partners.

“It is great to do something you enjoy and put your heart into it. This is a passion project for me and my partners Joe and Dan. It is not the first Sopranos event I have had but this one is a bigger scale.”

The event will be held at the Meadowlands in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Michael has done smaller Sopranos events that featured four or five cast members doing a Q&A either at his restaurant or some other venue. He and his partners decided to tackle something with a bigger “bada-bing”. They wanted to develop a Con like no other that would be a fan experience not just a bunch of booths of people selling items.

As Michael explained it is prime time to do the Con. There is the 20th Anniversary of the show and the confirmation of the long awaited prequel by Dave Chase coming out in 2020 called “The Many Saints of Newark”. It is funny to note when the show first came out Michael wasn’t even interested in taking it in. It was not until curiosity gnawed at him and he watched the first season and he was hooked.

Michael is entrepreneur and has broadened his horizons as he runs two different businesses, ATOM Media and Skyline at Waterplace. His company ATOM Media is an international company that has clients like BENRUS, Benjamin Moore, FAMARS, BMAX, Sasha Liv, the Jeffrey Osborne Classic and many more. He also is the CEO of Skyline at Waterplace which is a premier event company and restaurant.

Yet with all this work he still took on the behemoth of Sopranos Con. Michael’s partner Dan created the brand “Time Immemorial” (@timeimmemorial_ on instagram) in 2008 as a tribute to the Sopranos. The brand became a hub for the mega fans of the hit show. The network has managed to garner over 150,000 followers on Facebook alone. Joe is a leader in the event space world and owns a printing company. Together they make the perfect storm.

“The fans will experience a feast like event with food, user experience RFID technology, themed music and even a tour bus of the actually Sopranos Con. Not to exclude the twenty

ENCORE BOSTON HARBOR OPENS WITH A BANG

By Julia Romano Encore Boston Harbor, which was previously referred to as Wynn Everett and Wynn Boston Harbor is a luxury resort and casino, owned by Wynn Resorts and located in Everett, Massachusetts. The resort borders the City of Boston and is just about five miles from Boston’s Logan International Airport and financial district. The development is located on a 33-acre parcel of land, which was previously used for industrial purposes along the Mystic River, and purchased by Wynn Resorts in January 2015.

Public amenities of the year-round harborwalk are unique to the resort and include a picnic park, paths for bikers and pedestrians, viewing decks, waterfront dining and retail stores, a performance lawn, floral displays, and boat docks. According to Encore, the 33acre development is “the largest private 28 ShopInRI

single-phase construction project in the history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

The process to develop a casino started in 2011, when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts enacted the Expanded Gaming Act, which would allow Las Vegas style gaming in three established state territories, each eligible for one gaming licensed development. Everett, a territory that is part of Greater Boston, was one of the territories that was chosen to receive a gaming license. While a number of companies expressed interest in developing a casino project to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, Wynn Resorts set their sights on the Everett location, and once they did, they went full force ahead.

in Atlantic City and Foxwoods Resort Casino, made a deal with Wynn Resorts that he would be the lead for the project of the Wynn Everett development and then, would act as the resort’s president, if he was able to secure the license. In June 2014, Wynn Resorts submitted its Final Environmental Impact Report, a last step in the proposal process. In September 2014, Wynn Resorts’ proposal was accepted by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and received the first of the gaming licenses, beating out an over $1.1 billion casino proposal by Mohegan Sun to rebuild the Suffolk Downs racetrack in Revere near Boston. According to the Associated Press, the decision “came after Wynn conceded to a number of significant requests commissioners made, including proposing alternative designs for its 27-story glass hotel tower.” Also, Wynn Resorts “agreed to pay millions more toward long-term

Square in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood.”

Part of the environmental cleanup plan for the area involved building a living ecosystem on the shoreline. Additional positive outcomes of the 26 acre proposal involved the addition of several thousand full-time jobs with salaries averaging at $56,000. Wynn Resorts also estimated that Wynn Everett would bring $260 million in annual tax revenue to the state of Massachusetts. On January 5, 2015, Wynn Resorts spent $35 million on 33 acres of land along the Mystic River in Everett, as they publicized their plans to develop “an integrated resort containing a hotel, restaurants, casino, spa, premium retail offerings, meeting and convention space and a waterfront harborwalk.

On June 23, 2019, Encore Boston Harbor opened its doors after spending a whopping 2.6 billion dollars and settling legal problems related to sexual misconduct allegations against founder of Wynn Resorts, Steve Wynn. As a result of the negative publicity, Wynn removed himself from Wynn Resorts, and the name of the Boston project was changed to separate it from the Wynn name.

STYLEWEEK Season 17 Returns With New Look and New Location

STYLEWEEK Northeast will return this fall for Season 17, showcasing Spring 2020 collections. As a wellestablished Rhode Island favorite, STYLEWEEK looks to freshen up their three-night fashion extravaganza this year.

the new emerging designers, Rhode Island-based Tatyana, and Bostonbased Sinsational and Jeena. This year’s SEED challenge will consist of university level designers from MassArt tasked to create one piece made out of recycled material.

This new look will feature a new location for STYLEWEEK, set in the larger, third floor venue of the Rhode Island Convention Center, as opposed to the former, narrower venue of Sabin place. STYLEWEEK aims for a new, modern look by transforming the venue into an industrial chic atmosphere featuring a wider runway.

Friday, September 20th, will open with STYLEWEEK newcomer Kathryn Ambers, followed by returning Boston-based designer Angelica Timas, and STYLEWEEK veteran Carissa Lynne. The second half of Friday evening will showcase designs from STYLEWEEK veteran Chris Rogers, Project Runway alum Cornelius Ortiz, and end with eco conscious and ethical fashion label Devinto from Cape Cod. Friday evening will also include a bridal instillation by Arianna Nicola Designs.

Remaining in theme with their new venue, STYLEWEEK will also keep things fresh in their designer lineup by opening on Thursday, September 19th evening with mainly emerging artists and the SEED challenge. Saturday evening will close with designs from Boston-based Lalla Bee and Project Runway alum, Chicago-based designer Peach Carr. The final evening of STYLEWEEK Season 17 will also feature a fashion instillation by Amy Page DeBlasio. Guests can enjoy the pre-show Cocktail Hour and shopping on all three of the nights. Boston-based company, Flexetail, will have two mobile shops set up at STYLEWEEK, showcasing local designers.

STYLEWEEK released a brand new website on July 31st. After 17 successful seasons, STYLEWEEK is excited to branch out and embrace change on and off the runway. I don’t know about you, but I like my food, fruits, and vegetables nice and fresh. There is nothing better than farm fresh food. Well, except for a good aged meat, cheese, wine or scotch. I feel the same way about suits.

When we get a run of suits, even when the suit sells very well, we’re left with a few stragglers. Those suits cost us a lot of headaches. All the time, customers will see the suit in our stock, tell us that is exactly what they’re looking for, only to find that we no longer have that suit in stock, in a variety of sizes. Usually the customer doesn’t buy anything because they already saw the suit they wanted.

I have seen it happen time and time again. We know that if the customer had never seen the suit they fell in love with, the customer most likely would buy something else.

Many of you have had the experience of going to a restaurant for something you’re craving and find out they’re out of it, even though it’s on the menu. The funny thing is you really cannot pick out anything else on the menu because you came for one particular thing. Well, we think we may have come up with a solution.

At the end of every season, we cull the stock from our business and designer section, including suits that range from $700-$800, and put them into stock for $99-$199.

These suits are truly incredible buys in the range. There are pieces from all our designer lines, and in almost all cases, these suits are being sold below what we pay for them. Yes, we really do lose money on them, but we don’t lose a sale because someone wanted them, and we no longer have their size.

This year we have added a selection of magnificent sport coats to our summer sale. Now, we have a selection of very timely products in summer fabrics such as cotton, rayon, silk and linen starting at only $99. We have a great selection of jackets which are ideal for wearing as a dress jacket, for travel, or with khakis and jeans. For anyone travelling this summer or early fall, having a jacket with a bunch of pockets on them is really helpful in keeping your gear and tickets together.

We have also added a selection of less constructed and less constrictive jackets as well as traditional and slim fit models. The styles are new, and shorter in length. By Brian J. Lowney A visit to the Hotpoint Emporium is an adventure that shouldn’t be missed and one that certainly deserves more than a casual glimpse.

Nasseramics in the Mudstone Studios in Warren, exhibits his ceramics at Hotpoint as well as at craft and music festivals.

The colorful gallery offers more than 35 award-winning painters and illustrators, sculptors, handbag designers, woodworkers, textile artists, ceramists, photographers, shell artists, jewelers, torn paper artists and other award-winning artisans, all housed in a spacious facility that is marked by an iconic neon sign that was fully restored at 39 State Street.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s also a lot of fun,” the ceramist begins. Nasser, a 2013 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth where he studied graphic design, offers a variety of drink and dinner ware, plates and bowls at the Hotpoint Emporium.

Nasser, who serves as the assistant director of Visual Communications at Cape Cod Community College, began his artistic venture as a potter

while still in high school and “took it more seriously” at the university.

He continued his interest in wheelthrowing at Mudstone where he has continued his art for the past four years.

The potter’s collection includes a variety of Bristol-themed mugs and dinnerware, and the artist notes that he will soon be busy creating holidaythemed ornaments that are always popular as gifts and as table favors.

Hotpoint artist Richard Bradley, a Providence resident, says “I’ve always had a fascination, as far back as I remember, with jewelry and all things sparkly. In my teenage years I started collecting vintage costume jewelry and my natural inclination was to explore how and where such beautiful objects were made. From working in design houses that opened in the 1930’s and 40’s I learned many of the old and lost techniques from some of the industries ‘old timers.’ Today I’m a 10+ year veteran jewelry designer who enjoys inspiring others as well as exploring my own creative venues.”

Sculptor Ellen Blomgren, owner of Mudstone Studios in Warren whose work is available at Hotpoint, is a member of the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts, has taught pottery and art throughout the state.

“My inspiration comes from my love of wildlife and nature,” Blomgren shares. “I use the ceramic medium to tell a story. As I mold the clay into the form I’m trying to achieve, a story evolves embellished with texture, color and detail. I hope to stir a feeling that these creatures to come to life and play with you.”

“I am an an animal sculptor,” she says, adding that her favorite subjects include foxes and dogs.

Her two pugs, Gracie and Eddy, are often used as models as she sculpts with clay.

“I am new with cats,” Blomgren reveals, adding that while her work is on display at the gallery, she also works on commission.

As an artist, Blomgren says that she is constantly inspired by her association with the Hotpoint collaboration.

“Artists, in general, think outside the box, “ she continues. “They are always pushing the envelope on the canvas, so to speak.”

Nasser agrees that his artistic colleagues are very congenial and supportive of each other’s work.

“There is a very strong collaboration at the gallery,” Nasser shares.

“Everyone helps each other out.”

He explains that each artisan works two shifts per month, and all sales benefit the artist.

“Because there is no sales tax on art sold in Rhode Island, visitors and local shoppers can take advantage of any purchases in the store,” Nasser tells. He adds that artists bring in new work very week and there is always one or two artisans on hand at the store to discuss their work.

Another artisan who developed a widespread following is Melonie Massa, owner of Mermaid’s Baubles, a Bristol-based artist who creates seashell art.

Massa delicately makes sailor’s valentines, using rare vintage shells into wearable or ornamental art.

Hotpoint Emporium artist Jen Charleson pairs her mixed media geometric paintings with photos from the Hubble telescope and has been selected to exhibit her works from this collection as part of The Art of the Cosmos show celebrating 30 years of the Hubble Mission. The exhibit will be staged in Pasadena, California in April 2020.

Charleson offers a capsule of her work in Emporium’s lower basement.

The traditional and most popular story about the origin of the term “flea market” was in the article, “What Is A Flea Market?” by Albert LaFarge in the 1998 winter edition of Today’s Flea Market magazine. LeFarge’s theory, as expressed in the book, is that “flea market” is an English term taken from the French “marché aux puces,” which literally translates to “market of the fleas,” labeled as such because the items sold were previously owned and worn, supposedly containing fleas. LeFarge goes on to describe a flea market as an outdoor bazaar in Paris, France, named after those pesky little parasites of the order Siphonaptera (or “wingless bloodsucker”) that infested the upholstery of old furniture that was put out for sale.

According to Hollis Flea Market in Hollis, New Hampshire, America has approximately 5,000 flea markets, swap meets, open-air, farmers, antique and collectible markets, and special events, with an estimated over one million vendors and one hundred million annual shoppers.

Elvira Protano’s Gift for Hope Foundation is helping people fighting breast cancer.

Mark Berger By Since her breast cancer diagnosis several years ago, Elvira Protano of Woonsocket has waged a fierce one-woman battle against the disease. Instead of feeling sorry for herself and thinking there was nothing that she could do to make a difference, Protano not only beat back cancer, but also started a non-profit group devoted to aiding anyone else dealing with this disease.

Five years ago, she began “Elvira’s Gift for Hope Foundation,” not only as a coping mechanism for herself, but to show others that someone else is also fighting for them.

Protano knows first-hand the hardships that arise when doctors inform patients of a cancer diagnosis.

“It’s not just the person who is affected by the cancer; the entire family feels the effects as well,” said Protano, herself a Stage 2 Breast Cancer survivor. She underwent a double 46 ShopInRI

She wants to help out in her own way—because she knows what these families are going through—but said that she does not need the spotlight to feel like she makes a difference.

“There is a need for people to get help, but they are too proud to ask,” she said. “It can be tough to ask for assistance, but I am here to help, and every donation I receive and give is strictly confidential. They do not need to meet with me, although they can if they want. Over the past few years, I have

HEAT OR ICE FOR SORE MUSCLES?

By Susan Gazerro It can be so confusing. When do I use heat and when do I use ice? There are many techniques such as nutrition, hydration, compression, blood flow, and topical ointments to limit or eliminate the annoying muscle soreness that you can often experience after lifting weights, running, or exposing your muscles to other potentially damaging activities. But the question is, when do you use heat and when do you use ice?

As I mentioned in one of my previous articles, I believe that salt is a healer. I also believe that ice is a healer. However, there are times when heat is the answer. So, how do you know whether you should use ice or heat?

Icing and cold exposure for sore muscle recovery should be applied on a regular basis when you feel sore. I have recently read about cold thermogenesis and all its advantages. Some include the multitude of performance benefits derived from frequent exposure to cold temperatures and cryotherapy, such as cold water immersion and cold showers. Pain from sore muscles can interfere with daily activity. However, ice and heat can decrease muscle soreness and speed your recovery. While both treatments are beneficial, they are best suited for different 50 ShopInRI

situations. Ice and heat may also be alternated as soon as 3 days after injury. Let me explain further and try to shed some light on the differences and timing of when to use ice or heat.

When to Ice an Injury Immediately after an injury, muscle soreness occurs as tissues are overstretched or torn. Bleeding and swelling often occur inside and around your muscle.

Ice application after an injury constricts your blood vessels, decreasing blood flow to the area and limiting swelling. Nerve activity is decreased by cold, which diminishes your pain. Ice is typically applied for 10 to 20 minutes every 3 to 4 hours. It can be used daily until your pain is gone.

Heat Application Heat application increases blood flow to the injured area. For this reason, heat should not be used for the first 2 to 3 days after injury.

Heat is typically applied for 15 to 20 minutes to improve flexibility

and reduce stiffness. Following the first 3 days after injury, you can alternate the use of ice and heat to treat your sore muscles.

Apply heat if you’re feeling stiff.

The most common time for stiffness is after the muscle has been in a rest mode, such as first thing in the morning after you get out of bed. The muscle has been in an idle mode contributing to stiffness. This is when heat is beneficial. Ice is most beneficial immediately after the activity when the muscle is “awake.”

Hot and Cold Baths Hot and cold baths will absolutely decrease pain and swelling of your sore muscles. Alternating between warm and cold water helps flush excess fluid out of the area as your blood vessels expand and contract. Warm bath temperatures should range from 105 to 110 degrees fahrenheit and cold baths from 50 to 65 degrees fahrenheit. Alternating between hot and cold baths can begin immediately after injury. Treatment

should typically last for 10 to 30 minutes and may be performed more than once a day.

My personal opinion and experience is that ice is more helpful than heat. There are times when heat should be applied, but like salt, I believe that ice is a healer. Ice not only helps with soreness and pain, but it also decreases inflammation. Speaking from experience, (lots of experience), heat, ice, ibuprofen, creams, etc. are all great and may help with soreness or stiffness. I truly believe, however, that the number one medication for an injury is to work through it. The more you don’t use the sore muscle, the worse it will get. I have a very bad knee. My injury is so severe that a surgeon told me that it was the worst tear he had ever seen and that I had to have surgery. I have since had two more opinions, and yes, both surgeons agree it is very bad, but both also said that the worst thing I can do is to do nothing. You need to keep moving. I could not believe what I was hearing because this is what I preach to all my clients and classes. Our bodies are meant to move. Once we stop, our bodies will become noticeably stiff. If you have the ability to move your arms and legs, move them! The more you move your body, the healthier your body is going to be.

It’s the perfect time for gathering at many outdoor activities with family and friends. Cookouts, festivals, beach days, or just hanging by the pool are most popular during the summer months in the Ocean State.

During this time, we tend to eat lots of “party food” such as burgers, hot dogs, sweets, and other fast foods. Sometimes it’s just too hot to cook in the kitchen! It can be difficult to resist temptation during this time; things just don’t seem to be as regimented in the summertime. I hear the phrase “summer bodies are made in the winter” all of the time; this is a great way for you to think about the summer and plan ahead, but it does not mean that you should throw your progress away. Anytime is the perfect time to start incorporating healthy foods and exercise into your daily plan.

There are plenty of delicious meals that can be made to avoid using a stove and that are cookout friendly. Eating red meat every once in awhile is fine, but eating it regularly can cause health issues like heart disease, high cholesterol and increased cancer risk. Swap out red meat for leaner sources of protein such as fish, turkey, chicken, beans, and lean cuts of pork. Turkey burgers and veggie burgers are readily available at almost every supermarket if you don’t want to make your own; just pay attention to the salt content. Cut chicken into small pieces and marinate in a low sodium marinade for as long as possible, grab some delicious veggies and make kabobs on the grill. Another idea is to pre-make foil packets with a portion of lean protein and veggies to have ready to put on the grill anytime for a healthy meal. Drain and rinse canned chickpeas and season with your favorite flavors and throw them in the toaster oven for a few minutes for a high protein snack or an addition to your salad. Start your day with a big healthy breakfast so you don’t go out starving. Staying on top of your game doesn’t mean denying yourself the occasional burger or piece of cake. Moderation and small portions are key; it’s just as important to enjoy yourself. There are so many possibilities, you don’t need to limit yourself.

If you’re an outdoors type of person, get out early in the morning or later in the day to exercise to avoid becoming dehydrated or develop heat exhaustion; it happens faster than you think. If you cannot avoid getting your workout in during peak sun time, do it indoors or hit the pool. Exercises in the water are excellent for staying cool and keeping pressure off of bones and joints. Trust me, you’ll feel much more confident putting that bathing on after a good workout Water, water, water! Hydrate yourself from the minute you wake up. Add lemons and other fruits to jazz it up a bit. Herbal teas can be made into delicious iced teas as well. Summer fruits also give lots of hydration, especially melons. Keep alcoholic beverages to a minimum, and when you do have them, drink extra water, since alcohol can also cause dehydration.

Enjoy this time with family and friends, don’t get too hung up on weight and appearances. Stick to your plan and it will happen for you!

GOLF TOURAMENT BENEFITS THE TOMORROW FUND

By Mark Berger One of the joys of having children is seeing them turn into adults. Parents often start saving up for their future.

Maybe they will purchase their first baseball or softball glove. Or, perhaps it will be something more valuable like college or their first vehicle. They will have numerous decisions that will shape their lives as they get older.

That makes news of a cancer diagnosis in a child so devastating. No parent plans on seeing their son or daughter endure hospital stays days, weeks, months or even years. No caretaker expects to spend their money on after-visit care, parking and/or doctor visits. They certainly never think or dream of planning their own child’s funeral, if they should pass away.

The Tomorrow Fund helps families who are dealing with such issues. Founded on the notion that kids should live as close to healthy lives as possible, they raise money to ease the financial burden cancer can inflict on 54 ShopInRI

a family. Executive Director Lisa Abbenante said the financial strain can put many families over the edge without The Tomorrow Fund’s support.

“Nobody wants to think about these scenarios, but in case they happen, we are a resource available to them,” said Abbenante. “Costs such as parking can become very expensive if a parent is coming in daily or even several times a day. Parents might take a leave from work to stay by their child’s side at the hospital, causing overdue rent and utility bills. We are here to financially and emotionally support these courageous kids and their families during this challenging time.”

The Tomorrow Fund is located on the Rhode Island Hospital Campus on Eddy Street in Providence and provides support to any child diagnosed with cancer who is treated in the oncology program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and The Tomorrow Fund Clinic. The Tomorrow Fund is unique

to Rhode Island.

Abbenante said they provide parking passes for the parents or guardians and a daily stipend for inpatients to be put toward food or other expenses. She noted that parking can cost into the tens of thousands and is not something that people consider when they are dealing with said care. The Tomorrow Fund also provides day camps for the patients and their siblings. Camp Dotty (ages 4 to 7 year olds) and Camp Tomorrow (ages 8 to 13) provides a week-long day came with fun and activities for children to just be children.

Additionally, they also provide other programs and services for families.

The Tomorrow Fund sponsors Sibling Day, Parents Time Out, National Cancer Survivors Day, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Parent Reunion among their programs. Their “Kids for Kids” program invites schools, colleges and youth organizations to join in raising awareness in helping

children with cancer.

Abbenante said the organization hosts three outside events annually. The first one is their Stroll, which happens every April, where people of all ages stroll around Garden City in Cranston.

Another one is their 27th annual Golf Tournament at Warwick Country Club taking place on Monday, August 26. Last but not least, The Tomorrow Fund will hold its signature event, the 32nd Annual Fantasy Ball, on Saturday, November 2, at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston.

She said the events are designed to raise awareness and funding for their programs. When people mention they have never heard of The Tomorrow Fund, Abbenante said it’s not a bad thing, it means that they and no one they know have been affected or are dealing with the disease. If someone in their family is dealing with cancer, then they have a better understanding of what The Tomorrow Fund does and what they provide their patients and their family.

“These three events are crucial, ensuring the continuation of programs and the mission of the organization. The Tomorrow Fund is an independent 501(c) (3) organization who receives no funding from Hasbro Children’s Hospital,” said Abbenante. “The money helps to not only provide the children and their families with some much-needed relief and piece of mind, it also helps supports the clinic. We are grateful for the kind support of our donors and benefactors who make this possible.”

Why “Natural Finish” Deck Staining is SUCH a Finicky Undertaking…

Believe it or not, I am in my 3rd decade in the home improvement industry.

Feels kind of funny to be able to say it, but yes, I suppose I am some type of elder statesman. Perhaps one of the most dynamically evolving portions of the industry that I have witnessed over this time period is “natural finish” deck staining technology. When I first got involved in the industry, we had some historically SUPER sweet natural finish deck staining products that were the backbone of many of our deck staining suppliers. As time progressed, however, I personally have witnessed revolutionary shifts with regard to these types of products, as environmental laws have tightened up and become more restrictive than any of the natural finish deck stain producers could have possibly anticipated. As this has occurred, normally ultra-reliable “go-to” natural finish deck staining products have seemingly overnight become the source of application issues in the field, as well as potential service challenges on the backside of things.

As our industry has done their best to adapt and keep pace with these dramatic shifts, we have done a tremendous amount of trial and error on our end to be able to recommend and put into effect what we believe are the very best natural finish deck staining methodologies for our clients. Although not perfect, and still ever-evolving, I do believe we have (knock on wood) the best systems in place for ensuring that our clients have what is best available in terms of natural finish deck staining technology, for each of their absolutely individual deck requirements.

There are many variables when it comes to properly getting a natural finish deck staining job done correctly. Although it is not able to be controlled, the weather is at the forefront of everything. We prefer it being bone dry the day before you stain, the day you stain, and the day after you stain. We try our best to communicate this to our clients. In New England, with particularly challenging stretches of on-and-off wet weather,

we understand that it can be mountingly difficult for clients to remain patient as they wait for the ideal time to stain. Nonetheless, proper weather conditions are VERY important.

Another VERY important thing to pay attention to is the way that the stain is applied. My recommendation is that the stain should be applied one board at a time, end-to-end, while always maintaining a wet edge. For best results, we either brush, rag, or brush/rag in tandem our natural stain applications. If ragging, be sure to store all used rags in a bucket of water (if you want to know why I say this, feel free to reach out to us and set up some time to chat with me and I will be happy to fill you in).

We typically utilize one-coat natural finish deck stains. Before any product is applied to the deck, the deck should be thoroughly cleaned and prepped to bare wood as best as possible. If the deck was previously coated, there are a variety of techniques that can be used to ensure that the finish you are applying, will be as beautiful as ultimately possible.

It is important to note that all horizontal natural stain finished deck surfaces (floors, stairs and the top of handrails) should receive a maintenance coat, minimally, once every 1-3 years, depending upon how they weather and a few other factors.

As you can see, natural finish deck staining is not the easiest to plan, nor execute. If done correctly, though, your deck can easily be the envy of all those who may see it, as well as be protected to maintain its SWEET-looking state for a long time to come!

Joseph Schectman: Helping Students Graduate College and Prepare for Careers in Today’s World of Artificial Intelligence

The most difficult transition in life is from high school to college.

High school seniors are stressed about grades, homework, peer relationships, family struggles, going to the “right” college, leaving their friends and family members, and, in many ways, starting life over again. Despite these challenges, most high school seniors expect to graduate college in four years.

According to the National Student Clearinghouse Center, 58% of students who began college in the fall of 2012 graduated six years later in the spring of 2018.

Asian students (76.7%) and White students (72.1%) continue to graduate at much higher rates than Hispanic (57.4%) and Black (47.6%) students. David Jenkins of the Community College Research Center at Columbia University

The key to success in school— not to mention work and life—is brain dominance. According to Dr. Katherine Benzinger, who wrote the book, Thriving In Mind, the brain has four unique quadrants—two on the left and two on the right—and each quadrant has a very specific set of skills. Every individual has one quadrant of the brain that is their preference, the one that is their true gift.

This is where Joseph Schectmen, Owner of Joseph Schectman & Associates in Barrington, can help clients young and young at heart get to their core issues and remove the “mental junk’ that may be preventing them from success.

“College freshmen face two major challenges: developing new friendships and choosing good majors,” said Schectman.

“According to the National Center for Education Statistics, on average, college students change their majors three times. Additionally, 37% of college students transfer to another school, and of this group, 45% will transfer again. When people know their natural preference, they can choose the right college, major, and career that ensure their success and happiness, both in college and in work.”

He noted that students who are the most successful in high school, college, and life naturally use all four quadrants of the brain. In Dr. Benzinger’s research, 25% of people naturally use one quadrant,

55% of people use two quadrants, 15% use three quadrants, and only 5% use all four. The majority of college freshmen with low high school GPAs use one or two quadrants of the brain and use just the right side. A review of colleges throughout the United States reveals significantly lower graduation rates for schools that accept students with lower high school GPAs in the 2.0 – 2.9 range (C students) compared to schools accepting students with higher GPAs in the 3.0 – 4.0 range (B-A students).

“In my work with both white and minority students in K-12 schools, I found 90% of the students who were labeled at risk and/or special education to be right-brain dominant, hands-on and/or visual learners. In our national education system, we still use ‘stand and deliver’ left-brain ‘drill and kill’ methodologies. When ‘teach to the test’ curricula strategies dominate our classrooms, left-brain students thrive while right-brain students struggle to survive,” he said.

Schectman worked with Dr. Benzinger for over 25 years. Nine years ago, he developed a unique model to teach individuals how to use all four quadrants of the brain. During the 2011/2012 academic year, Schectman ran a pilot for 17 African-American and Hispanic, first-generation, at-risk freshmen with an average high school GPA of 2.5 at Southern Vermont College. All 17 students completed the brain dominance assessment and tested right-brain dominant.

After using his program, those students dramatically improved their self-esteem, academic confidence,

and the capacity to establish and maintain healthy relationships. In the spring of 2015, four years later, 12 of 17 graduated. Each student was the first person in their family to graduate college. The graduation rate was 70.5%.

The following year, they began a second cohort of 16 students. All 16 went through his program, and the results of the brain dominance assessment found 15/16 students to be right-brain dominant. Four years later, in May 2016, 13 out of 16 students graduated.

The graduation rate was 81.25%.

As K-12 schools and colleges are preparing their students to succeed in the job market, Schectman

must prepare their students for these changes,” said Schectman. “Bernard Marr, an expert in artificial intelligence, identified seven job skills that AI and robots can’t do better than humans: empathy and communication, critical thinking, creativity, strategy, technological management, installation and upkeep, and imagination vision. Those students who naturally use all four quadrants of the brain easily use all seven of these job skills.

“My program is simple to implement. Superintendents and college presidents can help their students, and parents also can ensure their children will have the competitive edge to succeed in today’s job market,”

Once You Turn 70 ½ This Tax Requirement May Apply to You. Here’s What You Need to Know.

If your retirement plan includes tax-advantaged accounts, there is a particular tax rule you should know about: required minimum distributions, or RMDs. This tax rule can be complicated, but the following commonly-asked questions can help you understand how it works and how it may apply to you.

Q: What are RMDs? A: Required minimum distributions are retirement account withdrawals mandated by the IRS once you reach age 70.5. By requiring you to withdraw a portion of your savings, the IRS is able to tax income that has been allowed to grow tax-free.

Q: What types of accounts fall under these tax rules?

A: RMDs generally apply to all tax-deferred retirement accounts, including traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs and SIMPLE IRA plans.

An inherited IRA is also subject to these tax rules. Roth IRAs are exempt from this requirement because they are funded with after-tax dollars.

Q: When do I need to withdraw RMDs? A: RMDs are an annual obligation once you reach age 70.5.

In the year you turn 70.5, your first RMD is due by April 1 of the following year. Thereafter, you must withdraw the required amount by December 31 each year. (There is one exception to the 70.5 rule: If you are still working and participate in a 401(k), profit sharing, 403(b) or other defined contribution plan, you can – if allowed by the terms of the plan document – generally wait until retirement to make RMDs from this type of retirement account.)

Q: How are RMDs calculated?

A: Your life expectancy is a factor in your RMD calculation. The IRS provides life expectancy charts and worksheets to help you determine how much you need to take from your IRA. The calculation is different if you participate in a Defined Contribution Plan, however the plan administrator often will calculate your RMD for you. Your financial advisor and tax advisor can help you plan for and make the appropriate withdrawals to meet the requirement.

Q: What if I own multiple accounts?

A: Once you turn 70.5, each eligible account you own will have an RMD requirement. If you own multiple IRAs, you can choose to add up the RMD amount for each account and withdraw the total from one eligible account to satisfy the requirement for all of your accounts.

Q: Can I withdraw the same amount every year?

A: RMDs are not something you can set and forget. The amount you are required to withdraw can change each year, so it’s important to stay current on the rules. A financial advisor and tax advisor can help you calculate and request your distribution.

Tax withholding is another consideration to discuss with your tax preparer.

Q: What happens if I don’t take the distribution?

A: Ignoring the RMD rule can trigger costly financial penalties.

A skipped withdrawal may be taxed at 50 percent. If you miss a deadline or miscalculate, consider withdrawing the required amount as soon as you realize your mistake and consult your tax preparer.

Q: Do I need to spend my RMD? A: No. If you don’t need the cash infusion, consider reinvesting withdrawn funds in a non-retirement investment account. Set aside whatever you may need to take care of tax withholding, if applicable. You can also consider using your RMD to make a charitable contribution (see below).

Q: May I donate my RMD to charity?

A: Yes, you can, if the contribution is paid out directly from your IRA (by the trustee) to an eligible charity. This is called a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). (If you take the RMD as income and then donate it, the money will count as taxable income.) A QCD is generally tax-deductible, up to certain limits. This type of distribution allows you to support the nonprofit organizations you care about while potentially reducing your tax obligation. Be sure to obtain documentation from the charity and provide it to your tax preparer to preserve your tax advantage.

By Mark Berger It can be hard for some people to understand what they see in front of them. Other people might not grasp the complex world that they live in. That may hold true for anyone trying to fathom the way the stock market and financial world works, and what the daily results mean for a financial advisor’s customer’s short-term and longterm prospects.

For Ronald Kent, President of Spinnaker Asset Management, located on 3970 Post Road in Warwick, such topics as figures, trends and mapping out the financial future for his clients are just the types of issues he thrives on and wants to handle.

From growing up on a farm in rural Pennsylvania, then graduating from Penn State University with a

degree in Aerospace Engineering, to finding his true calling—helping clients secure their financial future—Kent realized early on that asking questions drives him to success.

“I always wanted to know how things worked,” said Kent, who devoted four decades toward learning his craft. “I saw the markets and wanted to know why stocks fell when good earnings reports came out and why they rose when the opposite occurred. After investing a small amount of money and achieving a measure of success, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more.”

Managing other people’s money was a far cry from being raised on his family’s farm, where Kent said he grew up handling chores, tending

to the livestock, and enjoying the orchards and vegetable gardens they produced over the years.

Yet, his thirst for knowledge drove Kent from staying on the farm to becoming fully educated about the stock market.

Kent’s career began in the late 1960s, as a member of the General Electric’s Missile & Space Division.

He worked as an aerospace design and test engineer. After the faceoff in Cuba calmed down, the Air Force wanted a more sophisticated weapons system. Kent served on a five-member team assigned to test advanced ballistic weapons systems, under contract of the United States Air Force.

He also worked as a sales and marketing executive at an industrial equipment manufacturer until the

That lasted until his move to Providence in 1986, where he worked in institutional sales and ultimately as vice president and financial analyst at Dominick & Dominick, Inc. Kent worked in various capacities until deciding to form Spinnaker Asset Management in September of 2008.

Kent said that his goal is simple: providing easy-to-understand advice to his clients so they feel comfortable investing in the market. He stresses that the market is going to have peaks and valleys due to its volatile nature, but added that if people understand the risks and rewards based upon solid research and reasoning, then they can invest confidently knowing that their accounts are in good hands.

“There are so many variables that determine what is or is not a good investment,” Kent said. “I need to take both past and present information into account to determine what may be likely in the future 2-3 quarters of time. There is no sure-fire formula for determining which markets (stock, bond or commodity) will perform well, otherwise, anyone could do this job.

“The most important activity I perform for clients is to slant the probability of success in their favor by moving their assets into what I perceive to be emerging market leadership…and out of those issues that are not likely to perform as well,” Kent said.

Animal Cruelty Susan Gazerro

What defines animal cruelty? Some examples may be obvious, but others may not. Following are a few examples that clearly require a report to authorities when witnessed. The first is neglect. This is a failure to provide an animal’s basic needs such as food, water, adequate shelter, veterinary care, or when an animal is abandoned. When any or all of these negatively affect an animal, neglect should be reported. The second example is direct abuse. Nothing is more upsetting to me than seeing someone attacking an innocent animal.

I recently started a petition called “The Punishment Should Match the Crime.” I know the outcome will never be an “eye for an eye,” but the laws need to be more strict and finally, it is becoming more strict in some states. These abusive individuals need to be held accountable. Often, when violence is aimed toward an animal, it can lead to a larger pattern of violence toward humans. The abusers must be stopped. Many convicted murderers in jail started out by killing animals.

Do not turn your eye on animal abuse. As hard as it may be to get involved, it must be reported. The third example is pets left in cars. Time is so important when reporting a pet being left in a car. Even if the outside temperature seems cool, the animal could be minutes away from death or severe organ damage. If you don’t see the owner, do not wait to call authorities. Always jot down the color and make of the vehicle, the license plate number and the type of animal inside. The fourth example is awareness of any “animal fighting” or organized animal cruelty. Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states and can often be linked to other criminal activity such as human violence, gambling and drug distribution. In this case, if you report this to authorities, you may not only be saving animals, you may also be saving humans and aiding in shutting down illegal activities.

I am so thankful to organizations like “Handsome Dan’s Rescue Programs.” Handsome Dan’s Rescue Programs advocate for the rescue and placement of pit bull type dogs from local shelters, previously considered “unadoptable,” through a network of volunteer foster homes. Many dogs have been rescued from severe abuse and neglect, often including victims of dog fighting. Because the dogs in their program often require extra care, including medical, training and rehabilitation, our rescue is small by design.

They rescue locally and all around the country, wherever their help is needed.

I was so touched when I met Sandy and learned what this organization does. Every week, about five women meet a van at a Park and Ride in Rhode Island. This van has dogs that were rescued and brought up from the South. Most, if not all, were in kill shelters. These women foster them as they look for long term fosters and adoptions.
