IThe hospitality industry, like many others, continues to deal with the ongoing labor shortage that is disrupting the way we normally do business. Our veteran staff members are stretched thin and are overworked, leaving many of the workers coming into our industry, whether for the first time or after a hiatus, having to learn ‘on the fly’ and without adequate training. Training is critically important. Without a standard operating procedure for onboarding new employees, industry businesses are finding themselves in a revolving door of hiring, firing, job posting, and doing it all over again. As more untrained workers seek employment in the hospitality industry, it is important that our recruitment strategies are in line with our capacity to bring them up to speed. It is true that the hospitality industry is the industry of opportunity. Whether you are looking for a part time job while you are in school; a few hours here and there as you raise the kids; or a new career path with room to grow, the hospitality industry offers flexible hours, excellent pay, and ample opportunity. But, as great as that all sounds, those who have come to have successful careers in hospitality understand that the days are long, the work is hard, and that part of the reward is the camaraderie you can develop with your coworkers (especially when the order slips pile, while the temperature rises in the kitchen). These are things you simply cannot understand until you have experienced them.

Even though our businesses are still short-staffed, sometimes hard decisions have to be made for the betterment of the company and its brand. While our industry needs workers, we can do a better job of identifying and bringing in candidates who not only need to work, but who WANT to work in hospitality. To do that, we can begin by establishing and building out more professional development opportunities, encouraging collaboration and communication amongst industry peers, and looking inward at how we treat our existing employees. THE PERFECT EMPANADA By Brian J. Lowney “I’m chasing the perfect empanada!” he emphatically says, as our conversation begins… Pablo Mastandrea is on a quest to find the perfect empanada. The Attleboro, Massachusetts resident and father of four, started his personal journey more than 20 years ago in Rochester, New York, where he attended graduate school, but he couldn’t find what he was so fervently seeking. “It’s become my passion,” begins Mastandrea, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. “For 20 years, I have been chasing the perfect empanada.” Mastandrea shares that during his culinary journey, which has taken him from South America to Miami, Los Angeles, and New York, where he’s occasionally enjoyed the fried or baked Latin American hand pies made with various delicious fillings. “They were very unique at the time,” Mastandrea continues, adding that while he enjoyed a lucrative corporate career in sales and marketing working for several Fortune 500 companies, he was always drawn to the kitchen, where he could create good food for his family and friends. His latest venture, “The Perfect Empanada,” combines his passion for cooking with his business acumen. “I’ve chosen the road less traveled…” he emphasizes. “I left a comfortable, corporate professional career to take a chance and create an innovative company driven by personal passion and a vision.” Working with the staff at Hope and Main in Warren, Mastandrea launched his new venture in March ’21, and began production and sales of his Artisanal Gourmet Empanadas eight months later. “Our empanadas have all the qualities of goodness. They are decadent and delicious, fun, shareable, portable, beautiful, and creative,” he tells. “Our empanadas are baked, not fried. I am a bit of a perfectionist and all about the presentation. In addition to being delicious, our product must be creative, fun, and memorable! Most empanadas are pretty tasty. We want our empanadas to be irresistibly delicious,

According to the entrepreneur chef, some of the most popular flavors include Savory Chicken, which features chicken breast, sautéed with onions, roasted red peppers, scallions, and then finished in a white wine reduction to enhance and balance out the flavors.

We are going to lead with passion, humility, enthusiasm, fun, creativity, friendliness, dedication, and above all, generosity. In addition to succeeding as a business, we want to be in a position to give back to the communities we serve and truly make a long-term impact by helping others, who are perhaps, less fortunate. In order to achieve this, we need to continuously innovate and improve The Perfect Empanada experience for our customers. Our operation is very labor intensive and we wouldn’t have it any other way. This is not a side-gig. We embrace the challenge to serve the absolute best experience possible. This, to me, is the true definition of what The Perfect Empanada should be. So, I don’t think I’ll ever stop chasing the perfect empanada!” The enthusiastic entrepreneur describes the response that he and his daughter have received at Hope and Main and other events as “overwhelmingly positive.” “The lines are forming at the farmers markets,” Mastandrea observes. “We are a small and humble operation, with just a pop-up tent and a table, but we have a much bigger and more exciting vision for this business. Celebrating Greek Culture and Traditions in Rhode Island by Julia Romano

Officially known as the Hellenic Republic, Greece is a mountainous peninsula located in southeastern Europe, between the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. With a landmass of 51,000 square miles, Greece is bordered to the north by Bulgaria and Macedonia. Nearly 2,000 islands surround its eastern, southern, and western borders. The nine major land areas that constitute Greece include Central Pindus, Thessaly, the Salonika Plain, Macedonia/Thrace, Peloponnesus, the Southeastern Uplands, the Ionian Islands, the Aegean Islands, and Crete. The capital city, Athens, and the cities of Thessaloniki (Salonika), Patras, Volos, and Larissa have the largest populations in Greece, which has a total population of approximately ten million. Ninety-seven percent of the ethnically and linguistically homogeneous nation speaks Greek, and one percent, Turkish. The Eastern Orthodox church is the dominant religion; only about 1.5 percent of the population is Muslim, and a small percentage is Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, or Jewish.

Name days are just as widely celebrated as birthdays Many common Greek names are derived from religious saints; for instance, Constantinos (or variations such as Costas and Dinos) and Helen (Ellen, Eleni, Lena). They are wished a happy name day by their family and friends on the days that the saint is celebrated in the church. For a lot of people in Greece, this is just as big of an occasion, or even more so than their birthday! Democracy originated in Greece - The concept of democracy originated in Athens, where the Greek word demokratia meant “people-power.” Greeks tend to smoke inside restaurants, despite the current anti-smoking law - According to the European Commission for World No Tobacco Day, Greece is the EU’s heaviest smoking country with 37% of Greeks who smoke. Greek Coffee is brewed differently and contains three parts - Greek Coffee is made with a fine grind of coffee, boiled in a tall, narrow pot known as a briki, cezve or an ibrik. The three main parts to Greek coffee include the grounds, the thick and strong liquid coffee middle, and creamy topping of foam. It’s meant to be sipped slowly with grounds remaining in the cup as they settle to the bottom.

The flavors of Mexican food have influenced American cuisine for centuries. In the last half of the 1900s, Mexican-inspired foods found their way to every part of the United States, as it seamlessly blended as widespread popular cultural fare. Alongside traditional foods like tortillas, tacos, tamales, enchiladas, and salsas, new dishes emerged that combined Mexican, regional American, and other Latino cultures. Americans have welcomed Mexican foods into their diets and desired choice of cuisine. As a melting pot of numerous cultural backgrounds, the United States has incorporated Mexican cuisine into their daily eating habits as a common practice. As a matter of fact, salsa is the number one condiment throughout the nation, surpassing even ketchup and mayo. And tortillas have now been outselling hot dog buns for more than a decade. One of the primary reasons for the integration of Mexican food into the American food culture is the immigration of Mexicans into the United States. The immigrants may have left their country of birth, but their pride for their ethnicity caused them to bring their traditional, familial foods with them. To the delight of many Americans, many of the immigrants opened restaurants, serving the 26 Shop In RI

authentic Mexican food that they have come to love. The creation of Tex-Mex (which became popular in the 1940s) is the best example of our integration with our neighboring country, as Texas borders Mexico, and the popular Tex-Mex cuisine is a blending of the two.The cuisine we refer to as TexMex is rooted in the state’s Tejano culture (Texans of Spanish or Mexican heritage who lived in Texas before it became a republic) and also Mexican immigrants who hailed largely from Northern Mexico. Until the 1970s, though, most people referred to it simply as Mexican food. Mexican cuisine, on the other hand, has been around for thousands of years, beginning with indigenous communities (such as the Mayans and other Mesoamerican groups), bringing their cooking methods together. There are also Spanish, African, and even Asian influences in Mexican cuisine due to colonization. Another difference is with the spices used to create the dishes, but even more so, the specific dishes that exist in Mexican versus Tex-Mex. Mexican cuisine is different across regions, with different dishes, moles, and cooking methods that region is known for.

Yet all of these cuisines are a part of Mexican culture and tradition. The Northern Region is well-known for its meat dishes, while Oaxaca and Veracruz are more known for their seafood. Each region has unique flavors and dishes that they use. Some popular dishes are: mole, which is a traditional sauce made from chiles and cacao; cochinita pibil, or slow roasted pork; and tamales, which is masa/dough steamed in a corn husk with meat inside. Other well known dishes include: chili con carne, which is spicy stew made with ground beef, beans, and tomatoes; fajitas, which is grilled meat and veggies; and chimichangas, which are deep-fried burritos. Due to the American’s love of Mexican cuisine, Mexican restaurants across the country are thriving. No Time to Workout? By: Susan Gazerro

Time; we never seem to have enough of it. Yet, time is what’s needed to fit even the shortest of exercise sessions into the busiest of schedules. It’s so easy to let this one most important thing slip, if you haven’t put time aside to do it. But, you’re never too busy to exercise. It’s about your health. There are fun ways to get active. You just have to create an exercise plan that works for you. Trust me, you will feel better and happier at the end of each session. NO doubt! The World Health Organization recommends that adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of intense aerobic exercise each week. You should also do strength exercises on two or more days per week. This may seem like a lot, but I’m going to break it down for you. I also want to express that weight training is not about getting bulky, it’s about burning fat, while you do the weight training exercises. Weight training activates the muscles and you continue to burn fat for an average up to do two days after you are done working out. This, obviously, depends on your size, height, and weight, and will vary slightly. Make sure you do enough to average 30 minutes a day of exercise, five times a week. You can meet these targets by exercising in shorter bouts of at least 10 minutes each, spread across the week. It’s not that difficult. You find time for everything else, right? This is about being healthy. Keep reminding yourself of that. You must move your body. Your body is like anything else. Unused and it will rust! Here are 7 ways to workout, even when you think you have no time. There IS always time.

1. Start early. Wake up a few minutes earlier than usual and do a ten minute workout. Jumping jacks, go for a ten minute walk, do some abs, or mix it up with all the above. When you kick start your day with a workout, you feel so much better!

2. Get active on your commute. 36 Shop In RI

Walk as much as you can. Whether it’s to work, on lunch break, or on a mental break during the day, walk! If you can avoid taking a train or cab, do it and walk. If it’s bad weather, yes, commute another way, but whenever the weather permits, use your body as much as you can. Park far away from any entrance and walk. I repeat this often, but especially at the grocery store because you then can carry your bags to your car, and that is your weight workout, with some cardio.

3. Be Prepared. Keep a pair of sneakers and workout gear at work so you can do a little exercise during your lunch hour. Take a walk outside, try a short fitness or yoga class before lunch, or make use of a spare meeting room, and do 15 minutes of body resistance exercises.

4. Fast exercise is still healthy exercise.

Try interval training instead of longer cardio workouts to reap the benefits of aerobic exercise. To do this, alternate short bursts of intense activity with longer breaks of moderate activity. If you’re somewhat fit already, why not take a brisk walk and add in short bursts of jogging or running? Not

only will you improve your fitness and burn calories, you’ll complete your workout in a shorter amount of time.

5. Involve the family and friends. Your family and friends also need to get their daily dose of exercise so why not suggest football in the park or a game of frisbee on the way home? Exercise doesn’t need to be planned or take place in a gym.

6. Take advantage of waiting time. If you’re waiting for your dinner to cook or are bored of staring at TV ads, during a commercial break, take the opportunity to do a little exercise. Break into a dance, run in place, do pushups or star jumps. It all counts towards your weekly exercise target.

7. Look beyond cardio. Resist focusing only on cardio, as strength training is also important. You don’t even need to use weights, as your body weight is just as effective as free weights or machines. Set aside 5 minutes during the day to do 10 to 15 sit-ups, lunges, push-ups, and squats. Once you start making this a priority, it will become part of your lifestyle and you will actually be upset if you miss a day that wasn’t a planned day off. I’m okay with a planned day off, but if something happens that

interrupts my planned workout, I don’t feel right mentally or physically, for the entire day. You will love the new you!

Saying Good Riddance to Added Sugar By Julia Romano Did you know that removing foods with “added sugar” from your diet will enable not only a significant amount of weight loss, but will also help to prevent a great number of health problems? I can tell you, firsthand, that this has nothing to do with another fad diet. It’s also not something that will prevent you from eating what you love, and take it from me, if I was able to accomplish this, ANYONE can. I am in my early 50s, and for several years, I had a sugar addiction. Day after day, week after week, and month after month, led to years of eating foods with an exorbitant amount of “added sugar,” causing many unwanted pounds to creep up on me, while also causing me to feel unhealthy, both physically and emotionally. I constantly felt sluggish and unmotivated, with no end in sight. Did I attribute my declining health to the sugar? Of course not! Doing so, would mean that I would have to put a stop to my sugar addiction, and to be honest, I had no idea how to do this, or even if it was a possibility. I was in “deep sugar!” At the time, I blamed my weight gain and other health issues on everything, but my over consumption of sugar. My excuses included the normal ageing process and my body’s changes due to menopause, but if I was to be honest, I would have admitted that my diet, and specifically, the extreme amount of sugar I was consuming, was the primary culprit. Just about a year ago, a telephone call from my very intelligent and astute primary care doctor made a huge impact on me and started me on the track to turn things around. After some routine blood work, my doctor determined that the sugar I was consuming was not metabolizing as it should, which she explained, could potentially lead to medical issues not so far down the road. I took this as my “wake up call” and the push I needed to finally address my sugar addiction. At that very moment, I made a decision that one year later, drastically improved my health and enabled me to shed all of the weight I had gained in the past several years. I finally came to the realization that I was eating foods 40 Shop In RI

with far too much added sugar and it was time to change that if I wanted to take control of my health.

Reasons to Avoid Added Sugar One common sense fact is that an excess of sweetened foods and beverages can lead to weight gain, blood sugar problems, and an increased risk of heart disease, among other potentially dangerous conditions. For these reasons, added sugar should be kept to a minimum, whenever possible, which is actually not as difficult as you may think. I found it to be very surprising that most foods have added sugar, but, I also was able to find the same type of foods with no added sugar that are just as satisfying.

Important FACTS about ADDED SUGAR Many people rely on quick, processed foods for meals and snacks. Since these products often contain added sugar, it makes up a large proportion of their daily calorie intake. Experts note that sugar consumption is a major cause of obesity and chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression, liver problems, kidney disorders, cancer, and many others. Rates of obesity are rising worldwide and added sugar, especially from sugar-sweetened beverages, is thought to be a primary cause. Sugar-sweetened drinks like sodas, juices, and sweet teas are loaded with fructose, a type of simple sugar. Consuming fructose increases your hunger and desire for food more than glucose, the main type of sugar found in starchy foods.

In addition, drinking a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to an increased amount of visceral fat, a kind of deep belly fat associated with conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Below are even more risks linked to a diet with too much sugar intake: Increases the risk for kidney disease: Having consistent levels of high blood sugar may damage the blood vessels in your kidneys that can lead to an increased risk of kidney disease. Negatively impacts dental health: Eating too much sugar can cause cavities, potentially leading to decay and other problems. Increases the risk of developing gout, an inflammatory condition characterized by pain in the joints. Added sugars raise uric acid levels in the blood, increasing the risk of developing or worsening gout. Accelerates cognitive decline: High-sugar diets can lead to impaired memory and have been linked to an increased risk of dementia. As I am not a health care provider, nor a medical expert, I can only report on what I’ve been told by my trusted doctor, as well as the positive results I’ve achieved from removing added sugar from my diet. Replacing Added Sugar Foods After achieving results I never thought possible, I wouldn’t dream of going back to my sugar laced diet. The food replacements I have found are now what I crave instead of chocolate bars, which I replaced with one of the many no sugar added and Keto protein bars (Quest and ONE are two of my favorites) and sugary desserts. Being that my specific problem was too much sugar, I found that what worked for me was replacing my usual sweet cravings with many of the “Keto” diet desserts. Ice cream is one weakness I have that I thought I could never replace. Boy, was I wrong about that! There is a treasure trove of yummy Keto ice creams that are now very popular, such as Halo Top, Nick’s, Enlightened, Rebel, and so many others. Breyer’s also has “no sugar added” ice cream, as well as one with no sugar added and low carbs that are a little more affordable than the other brands. I now prefer no sugar added protein shakes, as well as no sugar flavored water, instead of sodas and sweetened fruit drinks. I also fell in love with acai’ bowls, a fruit dessert I had never heard of until recently. It can be made at home (check out the many recipes online) or purchased from many different places that serve protein shakes and other healthy, delicious treats, such

as Brewology in Smithfield, Coffee Connection, at all of its RI locations, Brewed Awakenings’ locations, as well as many other RI cafes. If you find the cafe’ acai’ bowl a little too pricey, Trader Joe’s sells it at a phenomenal price. I buy several and put them in the freezer so as to always have them on hand. I now totally bypass my typical sugary sweets and instead eat lots of fresh fruit, especially apples, oranges, bananas, and all things berries. I would have never imagined that I could make these changes, but it’s really amazing how you and your body will adapt and accept new preferences. I have also replaced regular peanut butter with one that has “no sugar added, (Skippy has one, but there is another called “Hank’s” that has many added flavors, without the added sugar, that was created and is locally sourced here in Little Rhody). I also use it as a spread for apples and bananas and add it to acai’ bowls for a delicious twist. I could go on and on and on about what I eat in place of the unhealthy stuff, but we all have our own tastes and foods that satisfy us. It just takes a little effort to find what you might prefer. What’s important to remember is that it can most definitely be done. Now that I have succeeded in reducing my sugar intake and reaped its many health benefits, I have also adopted a new habit. I can often be found in any given store, reading food labels to scout out the hidden sugars that are in so, so many products. Keep in mind that every one of those sugar ridden products has a more healthy replacement. One thing I know for sure from experience is that saying good riddance to added sugar will enable you to look and feel so much better, but I would strongly suggest that you check with your medical provider to see what diet changes may be the healthiest for your body. The Tomorrow Fund’s

34th Annual Gala Takes on “Roaring 20s” Theme By Mark Berger The Tomorrow Fund, the only local nonprofit organization that provides daily financial and emotional support to children with cancer and to their families, will be holding its 34th Annual Gala to further raise awareness and funds toward its mission. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, November 5th, at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston. The night will feature a live and silent auction, dinner, and dancing all in an effort to raise further awareness and resources to help children battling cancer. Executive Director Lisa Abbenante said their signature event typically draws over 500 guests; however, to allow for comfortable distancing, the event will be capped at less than 500. Other activities and surprises are also planned for during the evening. This year’s theme is “A Toast To The Twenties” with GQ and the Lady providing the musical entertainment. Abbenante said, “they’ve already received inquiries regarding the event, and expects quite a few guests will be dressed in themed attire.” “We are so fortunate to have a dedicated group of people ranging from the office and medical staff to

volunteers, all enabling families to focus on their child’s treatment,” said Abbenante, “We are a separate and independent organization, relying solely on fundraisers, grants and the generosity of the community for funding as we support every child diagnosed with Cancer who is treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital (in Providence).” Abbenante said the financial, physical, and emotional toll cancer places on families can be monumental. Not only does the patient face challenges, but so does the family, including the responsibility to ensure their child attends each and every appointment and treatment session. This can be both exhausting and financially draining. For example, parking would cost thousands of dollars for families. Fortunately, The Tomorrow Fund provides paid parking defraying those costs, from the time of diagnosis throughout the duration of their treatment, said Abbenante. One of the emotional programs The Tomorrow Fund provides is a weeklong summer camp for patients and their siblings that involve various activities and special events. Part of The Tomorrow Fund’s goal is taking the entire family into consideration when it comes to treatment and programs, she added. “Siblings often feel not only left out, but anxious and overwhelmed by the entire process,” Abbenante said. “In an effort to maintain family bonds, we offer many family activities that involve everyone.”

Along with family activities, The Tomorrow Fund’s support goes beyond, by providing financial aid and support, assisting with mortgages/rents, utilities, food and other essentials. That is because the financial impact of treating a child with cancer can be unbearable. The Annual Gala offers various Sponsorships levels with accompanying benefits such as tickets to attend the event, name recognition and signage during the event. She noted with the continued support of prior year sponsors and the hope of new companies and individuals, “we can all make a difference and support the Mission.” Abbenante said that while people are there to have fun, they are also making a tremendous difference by helping make better lives for children with cancer. “These are brave boys and girls battling cancer. Not only are they fighters, but so are their mothers, fathers and siblings. There’s so much they all go through both emotionally and physically. By supporting The Tomorrow Fund and this event, you will be making a difference for these patients and their families,” Abbenante said. Freelance professionals have unique opportunities and challenges when it comes to creating a viable path to financial security. In exchange for increased flexibility, freelancers must create their own paychecks and financial strategy. Whether you’re a long-time freelancer, new to the ‘gig economy,’ or just curious how people can manage their money when they don’t have access to traditional workplace benefits, here’s a primer on how to make it work: Do set your own terms of service. Define your rates and payment terms to avoid ambiguity with your clients. It’s easier to enforce terms when you’ve spelled them out in your freelance contract and on your invoice. An established policy can also help you set and achieve your income goals and maintain sufficient cash flow. Do keep business and personal finances separate. Mixing business and personal expenses can cause trouble down the road. When tax time rolls around, it’s helpful to have your business expenses isolated, with receipts to back them up. Be sure to maintain complete business records going back a minimum of three years in case of an IRS audit. Also, consider paying yourself on a regular schedule from your business account. You can choose a set amount each month or a percentage of each project. Doing so will help you manage your personal expenses. Do maintain a healthy emergency fund. Freelance income often ebbs and flows in direct response to a variety of factors, including the economy, seasonality, changes in a key client’s needs or your capacity for projects. Build your liquid savings, which will allow you to subsidize your paycheck in a lean month. Do create a tax strategy. Freelancers are generally required to pay estimated taxes on a quarterly basis, with the remaining balance due by tax time of the following year. Self-employment taxes, which covers Social Security and Medicare, also generally need to be paid quarterly. Paying the incorrect amount can result in costly penalties. Consult a tax advisor who can help you formulate your strategy. Do prioritize saving for retirement. Investors with a longer time horizon usually can tolerate more risk so they will hold a larger percentage of stocks within their portfolio. Investors with a shorter time horizon may hold more bonds or similar instruments that offer greater security with lower yields.

Portfolio diversification. Portfolio diversification is another strategy designed to help you spread risk across your portfolio. It involves selecting a variety of investments within each asset class to help minimize risk. For example, by putting your “growth stock” money into several companies that meet growth criteria, you are protected in the event one of those companies fails.

Dollar-cost averaging.

During times of market volatility like we’ve seen since the start of 2022, it’s natural to feel a bit skittish about the stock market. It’s a potent reminder that there are risks to stock ownership. Individual stocks are not guaranteed to grow and may lose value. The good news is that the stock market has historically delivered a higher rate of return than other forms of investment in the same timeframe. With this in mind, there are strategies you can deploy to help insulate your portfolio from the natural up-and-down swings of the market, while staying invested for the long term.

Buy and hold. There will always be day-to-day fluctuations in the stock market. Plunging stocks can cause panic selling. Rising stocks can inspire overly optimistic purchasing. A buy-and-hold investment strategy takes a long-term view to investing. It discourages buying or selling stocks in response to market dips and surges. Over time, portfolios governed by this strategy tend to deliver more robust long-term results than ones guided by emotional decisions.

Dawn Marie Tramontano and Steve Parrott Find Real Estate Their Calling by Mark Berger

co work Fate can be a funny thing. Take the case of Dawn Marie Tramontano and Steven Parrott. Both of them were in deep with their respective restaurants and hospitality industry jobs. They both wanted to change their professional directions and it was during one of those sudden moments that their paths collided and changed their professional trajectory. Parrot, a Team Leader of Century 21 Limitless, based in Davol Square in Fall River, connected with Tramontano during a chance encounter. The latter had recently separated from her restaurant job and planned to take the 58 Shop In RI

summer off. She wanted her new endeavor to enable her to spend more time with her son. When the two of them met, it was Parrott asking Tramontano if she would be interested in becoming a Realtor. Once she accepted his job offer, it has become a wonderful match in real estate heaven. Steve provides Realtors with the systems and processes to be successful agents - he has a team of eight, including herself. The agency serves most of Massachusetts and Rhode Island in partnership with Kyle Seyboth of Century 21/The Seyboth Team, who is based in East Providence, RI. They handle residential and commercial properties and have been busy learning and educating themselves and their customers on the changing landscape of home buying and selling. The call for open houses will continue to be high and the summer will be a great time to see what is available for purchase. How to Save House Plants While Away on Vacation My name is Tom Lopatosky. Deep down inside my soul, I realize that I have better chances starting as the ‘center’ for any team in a professional basketball league, than I do at being trusted with any type of garden advice, whatsoever.

Adjust the amount of light and temperature your plants will receive, while you are away (with the idea that the more light the plant receives and the warmer it is, the more thirsty your plant will be, over time). Prune the plant right before leaving (this will lead to the plant needing less water while you are away).

Recently, I came across some neat tips, however, that seemed to be perfect for the interior plant enthusiast in our lives, who may be taking a vacation at some point.

A cool trick: place gallon containers or jars of water (size being dictated by how long you plan to be away) around the plant and anchor one end of a piece of twine at the bottom of the container or jar, and the other end around the soil of the plant. Water will gradually wick up from the container/jar and help to keep the soil moist while you are away.

While some of the more truly passionate plant owners in my life seem as if they would like to take their plants on vacation with them, this is obviously not realistic.

Believe it or not, many folks care just as deeply about their potted plants, as others care for pets or even family members!

Although the plants are not able to take a seat on the plane next to you, you can be assured that they will not only survive your absence, but they will also be in very good condition when you get back to town.

Ensuring that their plants will be okay while they are away, adds an element of ‘peace of mind’ that may not be able to be described to others, unless you happen to be one of these fine plant-loving folks.

Plants need air just as much as they need water. Therefore, contrary to some beliefs, it is important not to simply attempt to prevent moisture evaporation by covering the plant with some type of glass enclosure. This is an absolute ‘no-no’ and will most likely cause the plant to die due to lack of air.

Combining a number of these tips should certainly help in easing concerns of leaving plants behind while away on vacation, particularly without a daily caretaker.

By the same token, if you happen to have a traditional terrarium, it is equally important not to oversupply the plant because it has no design to accommodate the correct drainage. Well then.

If a plant needs to be able to breathe and also needs to be able to access water while away, what are the options? One simple solution is to arrange to have someone come by once in a while to water the plants (assuming they are properly trained to do so) while you are away. An “old-school” trick that may be helpful would be to soak the soil of the given plant soon before your departure and then insert a heavy cardboard disk in the top of the pot that will then fit around the stem (or stems) of the plant; this will reduce the pace of moisture evaporating. “When my oldest mare died, I allowed the others to see her, sniff her body, and realize that she had died, not just disappeared,” she wrote. Pugh added that the mare’s daughter, Dolly, was brought out of the barn to witness the burial. “She stood over her mother until the heavy equipment came to move the body, dig her burial spot, and bring her down to the site,” Pugh continued. “Dolly followed the backhoe and waited patiently, standing guard until her mother was completely covered and the equipment left. From that day forward, when she was let out of her stall in the morning, the first place Dolly would go was to her mother’s grave and stand over it for a few moments before moving on to graze. She is now buried alongside her mother.” Pugh revealed that cows also grieve. “I saw my neighbor’s cow give birth to a premature calf,” she recalled. “It didn’t live long, less than an hour. As the mother stood over her baby, trying to nudge it back to life, all the other cows gathered around. Then they formed a line and each cow walked by, gently touching the dead calf and then moved on. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.” Pugh remembers that the cows also comforted the mother by gently nudging her and remaining with the grieving animal for the rest of the day.
