Waldorf Astoria Losing Up to 75% of Its Hotel Rooms

A classic New York City landmark is about to undergo a radical transformation. China’s Anbang Insurance Group plans to close the Waldorf Astoria hotel next spring for a $1 billion renovation lasting up to three years that will see roughly twothirds of its rooms converted into private apartments, reports the Wall Street Journal. The hotel will go from having 1,413 rooms to between 300 and 500 meaning many of the 1,500 Waldorf employees will find themselves without a job. Anbang, which bought the hotel for $1.95 billion in 2014, says it will pay more than $100 million in severance agreements, hundreds of which have already been signed.

“We have not finalized any plans in terms of the scope, nature, and details of the renovation project or the

exact timing and duration of the hotel’s closure. We are currently developing conceptual plans and will share additional details once those plans are finalized,” an Anbang rep tells Reuters. Back in 2014, a hotel analyst predicted that converting the Waldorf Astoria to condos could raise $4 billion in sales. For now, there’s no word on how many condos will be created or what they might cost, but be warned: “A potential buyer needs more than money to qualify for our apartments,” Anbang’s chairman told a crowd.

GRILLED CLAMS WITH PASTA

Who says you’re only allowed to cook burgers on the grill ? This is one of my favorite ways to enjoy clams...and without the clam knife! I always use hardwood charcoal for this recipe.

The clams should be stored cold and dry until ready to use...not in water, not on ice. Place the clams in a bowl and cover with a wet dish towel in the fridge.

To clean (purge) the clams, fill a large bowl with cold water, add sea salt and some cornmeal to it, and mix it around. Add the clams to this bowl and let them sit in this liquid for at least an hour. They will suck up the cornmeal and spit out sand and grit from the clams. After an hour, pour out the water/salt/meal/grit mix, and thoroughly wash the clams.

Start your hardwood charcoal grill and divide it in half: coals on one side, no coals on the other.

While the coals are heating up, take a disposable aluminum foil tray and place it on a burner on your stove over medium heat. Add the butter, olive oil, parsley, oregano, basil, garlic and salt, and stir to combine. Once the butter has melted and everything has blended, bring the tray over to the charcoal grill and place on the side of the grill without coals to keep the butter and herb mix warm.

Ingredients: A couple of dozen (or more) little neck clams, washed and purged 1 stick (8 oz.) of unsalted butter 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon minced garlic 40 ShopInRI

Once the coals are hot, place the clams directly on the grill. (Use tongs, unless you want to remove all of your knuckle hair.) When they start to open, carefully flip them over, trying not to lose any of the precious juices inside the clams.

Cook them for as long as you like, from raw, to more thoroughly cooked. As each one reaches the desired doneness, place it in the aluminum tray, making sure it gets swished around in the butter and herb mix.

When all of the clams have been cooked and are in the tray, serve on top of pasta...or simply eat with a fresh baguette. A glass of great white wine is also a must.

Every year, once winter melts away, I wait eagerly for August, when the best heirloom tomatoes reach their peak ripeness. In New England, local heirloom tomatoes are a fleeting commodity, showing up in August and fading away before the end of September; so when they are in season, I take advantage by preparing and eating them as often as possible. There is no better way to enjoy fresh, ripe heirloom tomatoes than raw, prepared as simply as possible to preserve their natural flavor. This recipe is one of my favorites, and I make it every year. There is no exact amount for any of the ingredients because the proportions depend solely on one’s own taste. The only thing that is crucial for this recipe is using the best and freshest ingredients you can find, and during this time of year, that is easy to do.

Ingredients

Local heirloom tomatoes, cut into bite sized pieces Narragansett Creamery fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into bite sized pieces White onion, sliced as thinly as possible Basil leaves, chopped into pieces Balsamic vinegar and olive oil, about twice as much oil as vinegar Salt and pepper Preparation

Combine all ingredients in a container, making sure there is enough vinegar and oil to completely coat all of the ingredients. Toss well to combine, and chill overnight, allowing the flavors to meld. Take out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before serving.

Zucchini Frittata with Red and Yellow Cherry Tomatoes There’s nothing like a good frittata in the summertime; it’s a dish you can have in the morning, afternoon or evening, and is quite filling too.

Zucchini is now locally in abundance, or if you prefer, summer squash would work just as well.

Zucchini is a low calorie vegetable, high in potassium, and also contains moderate levels of B-complex vitamins. As for cherry tomatoes, they are also low in calories and high in vitamin A and vitamin C, among other beneficial properties. This recipe is very eye catching with its rich color combinations, and will be sure to please your guests when they get served a slice.

Ingredients: - 2 medium zucchinis, sliced thinly - 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil - 1 cup ricotta cheese - 5 eggs - 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, finely grated, plus more for the top of the frittata - 1/4 cup flour - 14-15 yellow and red cherry tomatoes, cut up in halves or quarters depending on the size - 1/4 cup to half a cup (depending on how much you like) of diced red onion.

Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush a 9 inch round pie plate with a little more than ½ a Tablespoon of olive oil.

Heat ½ Tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet. Add the sliced zucchini and cook for 3 minutes, seasoning with salt and pepper. They should be slightly soft but still green. Set aside to cool.

In a medium bowl whisk eggs. Then add ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, a little touch of salt and pepper, the flour and the minced parsley. Mix together thoroughly.

Pour the mixture into the prepared pie plate. Then sprinkle the asiago cheese on top of it and a little bit more parmesan too.

- 1/4 cup asiago cheese, grated - 1 Tablespoon fresh parsley, minced salt, pepper to taste

Next take the same skillet used for the zucchini and add another ½ Tablespoon of olive oil. Heat up the oil and then add in your minced red onion and throw in the sliced cherry tomatoes and cook for a minute together.

Place the cooked onion and cherry tomatoes in a strainer so the tomatoes liquids seep out, otherwise you will have a watery frittata. Now take your zucchini mixture in the prepared pie plate and arrange the cherry tomatoes and onions on top of the zucchini and cheese mixture. Sprinkle with some more parsley if you like.

Champlin’s Seafood, Galilee

Champlin’s Seafood is part of the story of the distinctive Port of Galilee, and the story is on the walls and in the fare. It’s a place where you can smell the salt water, hear the Atlantic Ocean in its serenity or ire, and watch working draggers ply the wharves from the comfort of a cocktail, a plate of steamers, and a lobster roll. “Most everything here at Champlin’s – the food in the restaurant upstairs and the retail market downstairs – comes from boats out the back door,” owner Bob Mitchell said. “All your lobsters, all your fish, and shellfish.”

Champlin’s has a wholesale dock where they unload day-boats and offshore vessels. Champlin’s Fish Market sells retail downstairs, and the upstairs Champlin’s Seafood Deck gives diners a panoramic scene of maritime life, a gastronomic tour of local seafood classics, and a visual history through memorabilia 46 ShopInRI

on the walls and bars. “It could be swimming in the morning and on your plate at night,” Mitchell said.

“Sea bass, fluke, flounder, whiting, scup, squid. You can almost get any species that is around here. Anything that is indigenous to this port.”

A longtime South County resident, Mitchell bought Champlin’s in 1990 along with two partners, and he is very aware of the deep history. “It began as a shed for the Champlin family; they were fishermen,” Mitchell said. “It was a fisherman’s storage shed where they left their

equipment – their rubber boots, tools of the trade, and anything they needed to fix their boats.” Around the 1920s, the shack expanded into a retail and wholesale fish market, and in the late 1930s, owner Harry Champlin started selling clear chowder. The Hurricane of 1938 devastated Galilee and some speculated it wouldn’t be rebuilt. Even after 1954’s Hurricane Carol, the spirit of Galilee wouldn’t sink. “And the area grew,” Mitchell explained. “The store got popular; they put coolers in, and in the late ‘70s, they put a second floor on it and opened up a restaurant upstairs.” “It’s a draw,” Mitchell said of the views. “A lot of people sit out there.

They are either having a drink, or drinking and eating; and they watch the fish being unloaded downstairs.”

From quahoggers in the Salt Pond tidal flats, to deep-sea lobstermen, Galilee was built on the fisheries.

According to local lore, Nova Scotian fisherman Thomas Mann dubbed the growing hamlets on either side of the inlet ‘Galilee and Jerusalem’ in 1902 as his idyllic new home on the Narragansett shoreline produced Biblical allusions. The area took modern shape in the early 1900s when permanent breakwaters and jetties were constructed, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to Point Judith Pond through the breach way and creating the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge. Fishing shacks went up as ships docked overnight. Nowadays, the Block Island Ferry leaves from Galilee; there are charter vessels and large commercial fleets; fish processing and shipping plants alongside shops, homes, restaurants, bars and beaches. Lobster boats go out early, but they come back in the afternoon.”

Approximately 250 people can sit in a combination of inside/outside dining with small and large booths and bar seating, with open vistas all around. The walls and bar are lined with maritime nostalgia – tidal maps, newspaper articles commemorating Hurricane Carol, and old photos of mariners, the building, Clippers and such. Dining is informal; you order at a window and wait until your number is called. Then carry your heaping tray to wherever you’d like to sit. At the bar, they have draft beers and cocktails, and specialize in Bloody Marys. The menu has everything from raw bar oysters to fried mollusks to steamed lobsters and clam bakes. They use cholesterol-free and trans-fat-free oils, and they use flounder or yellowtail for fish and chips. There are three types of chowders – original clear, white and red – to have with clam cakes, or there are fish taco appetizers, clams casino, stuffies and snail salad; buttered lobster salad sandwiches, fried whole belly soft-shell clams, and scallop and clam strip rolls. Downstairs, you can shop for steamers, swordfish or tuna steaks to take home. You can pick a lobster downstairs and have them cook it upstairs. “We’re one of the few places that offer whole fish, not cut,” Mitchell said. “Some people like to look at the eyes and the gills and make sure their fish is fresh. This is as fresh as it gets.”

During the summer, Champlin’s is open from 11am to 8pm Sunday through Thursday, and on Friday and Saturday, it’s open 11am-9pm.

A Rhode Island Success Story…

How does a young, minority woman from a small community and a background of poverty and dysfunction achieve success? For Viola Davis, it happened because of her diligent work, her tenacity to thrive, and a persistent drive to overcome life’s obstacles and challenges.

Actress Viola Davis was born on her grandmother’s farm, Singleton Plantation in St. Matthews, South Carolina.

When she was two months old, her family moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island, where her father, Dan Davis, worked as a horse groomer and trainer. Her mother, Mary Alice, a maid and factory worker, was also a civil rights activist. Growing up in Central Falls, Davis and her family were the only African Americans. “It was difficult growing up in a small town where we were the only Blacks,” Davis said in an interview with www.ric.edu.

However, the biggest problem for Davis as a child was poverty. “I love my family dearly and I am dedicated to and protective of them,” she continued in the interview, “but I came from a dysfunctional family. Poverty is a disease of the mind, and a disease of the spirit.” She found solace from this poverty with education. “My parents were not educated, but they believed in education,” Davis was quoted as saying on www.tv411.org. Therefore she attended Saturday classes and summer school and when not in a classroom, was tutored by her older sister. Barely a teenager, Davis had already decided on an acting career.

“I wanted to express myself by being an actor. I felt the

Does Exercise Cure STRESS?

Muscles tense in preparation for action, mental alertness increases, less blood is delivered to the skin, digestive tract, kidneys and liver. This happens because those organs are not needed as much during crises mode.

Sugar, fats and cholesterol increase in the blood for energy. Are you seeing the picture of how and why we gain weight when we are stressed?

Here are the most common systems of stress:

Physical Headache, fatigue, insomnia, muscle aches, rapid heart beat, chest pain, upset stomach, appetite loss, trembling, cold hands and feet sweating I don’t know if we can say that exercise “cures” stress, but we can definitely say it can control stress. What does that mean, “control stress”?

Cortisol, which is the primary stress hormone, increases sugars (glucose) in the bloodstream, which is why we tend to gain weight when we are under stress. It has been scientifically proven that women, more so than men, tend to gain weight, especially in the lower body when they are stressed.

Before I explain how to keep cortisol under control, let me try to explain what causes stress and what happens internally to our bodies when we are under stress.

There are both external and internal events that trigger a stress response.

In today’s world, externally could be a number of things. Today’s technology has everything right at our fingertips which can be good and bad. Yes, we are aware of things immediately, but it also leaves us no down time. We are always rushing to do the next thing.

This can cause stress. Other outside factors could be anything from traffic, deadlines at the office, a confrontation with a family member, a friend, a store clerk, or even someone at work can cause us stress. Then there’s the internal stress which we bring on ourselves. This may be the most harmful type of stress. Examples of this exasperation stress are again, the overload of schedules, too much caffeine, the sleep we don’t get, etc.

Everyone reacts differently to stress, but what takes place in our bodies is quite similar. Adrenaline, a well known stress hormone tends to result in the fight-or-flight response, providing strength and energy to either fight impending danger or escape it. This has been programmed into our bodies through evolution, back to the caveman days. Think about it, when a bigger guy, perhaps with a bigger club, threatened to take your food, you either fought him off or you made a run for it.

When you exercise, a lot is going on chemically in the body. The euphoric feelings during and after exercise, as well as the muscle soreness that might come a day later, do not appear magically. Your body is made up of millions of chemical reactions, which result in different physical and mental feelings. Here are some of the top hormones and chemicals that are released when you work out.

Endorphins These chemicals are released by your pituitary gland, which is located in the base of your brain. Endorphins make you feel exhilarated and happy and block any feelings of pain; so you can power through any discomfort caused by exercising. That’s why people become addicted to strenuous forms of exercises and experience “runner’s high”.

Estrogen Estrogen determines whether carbs or fat fuel the body during an intense exercise session. Women tend to burn fat for fuel, while men tend to burn carbs, because women have higher estrogen levels. When women undergo menopause, they usually experience some weight gain because of lowered estrogen levels.

Dopamine Dopamine is a pleasure chemical. Studies have found that a brain with a dopamine receptor deficiency is more prone to weight gain, because eating quickly easily raises dopamine levels. Those with fewer receptors need more dopamine in the bloodstream (aka more food) to reach the same level of satisfaction as someone with a normal amount. This is even more reason to work out regularly. This helps to keep those dopamine levels up in order to keep from overeating and gaining weight.

Serotonin A chemical responsible for happiness, restful sleep, and a healthy appetite, serotonin levels will increase if you work out regularly. Serotonin works with endorphins to make working out a pleasurable activity. In addition, more serotonin means more energy and clearer thinking.

These are just a few. There are also many “growth hormones” that are released during exercise that contribute to muscle growth, cell repair, etc.

Bottom line, there are so many benefits to exercising. I have always preached, since becoming an instructor, exercise for the health benefits; the weight loss will be a fringe benefit.

I find when people focus on the weight loss, exercising becomes a chore, however; if you exercise for the right reason, TO BE HEALTHY, the weight loss will be a fringe benefit.

Change Your Bad Habits!

How about all of those cookouts and barbecues?! I’m sure July was filled with a ton of them. I bet you’re asking yourself a lot of questions. What can I eat so as not to overindulge? What should I bring that is healthy next time? Well, we must change our habits and make it a lifestyle change! Personally, I would bring turkey burgers to a cookout. When you arrive, choose the salad over the chips and salsa; and continue to do so out of habit.

See, there is a difference between habit and need.

You do not NEED the chips and salsa. You may want to have the salad over the chips because you’ve made this a lifestyle change, which then turns into habit.

I have been eating clean for twelve years now and everything I do is out of habit. When I say eating clean, I mean healthy, real, whole foods. I always eat fresh and never frozen so that I can get the best possible nutrients.

The common misconception is that people must eat bland, boring foods in order to live a healthy lifestyle.

This is completely untrue! I enjoy the same food as the next person; but, I prepare it in a cleaner fashion.

For example, chicken parmesan can be baked instead of fried. Pasta can be brown rice pasta; and veggies do not have to be smothered in butter. Again, this is a habit. This will gradually turn into a healthy lifestyle change and it’s something for which your future body will thank you.

So, I challenge you to change your lifestyle, change your habits, and in turn, you will change your body!

In June 1996, Evans created Second Fire for the International Sculpture Conference where it became the gathering place for thousands of participants from all over the world. Ardent art supporters convinced Evans to create an on-going fire installation and started a grass-roots effort to establish WaterFire as a non-profit arts organization.

With the support of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, a hard working staff, generous donations from visitors, contributions from corporate leaders, and support from the City and State, WaterFire’s bright flames now regularly return to illuminate downtown Providence.

In 1997, WaterFire Providence expanded to 42 braziers, and attracted an estimated attendance of 350,000 people during thirteen lightings. Evans received the Renaissance Award from the City of Providence for his work as an artist and his role in revitalizing downtown Providence.

In response to growing attendance, WaterFire expanded in size to 81 braziers in 1998; and 97 braziers in 1999. The 1999 season culminated with 100 bonfires in a special WaterFire lighting for the December 31 millennium celebrations.

The Vanderbilt family – once America’s wealthiest and most affluent – flaunted and spent their riches to the extreme and lost it all!

The lifestyle of the nation’s wealthiest family has long been a source of allure for ordinary people. Their lavish and luxurious mansions, the enormous summer “cottages” they built in the 19th century, their flair for entertaining, and their extravagant galas were glamorous beyond our imagination.

The Vanderbilt’s accumulated the first great fortune of the Industrial Age. They went on to symbolize the overindulgence of the Gilded Age, using their wealth to achieve distinction in New York’s prosperous social scene in the late twentieth century.

Members of the Vanderbilt family constructed many of America’s most extravagant private homes, such as “The Biltmore” in Asheville, North Carolina, and “The Breakers” and the “Marble House”, spectacular vacation cottages in Newport, RI. They also owned ten mansions on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, dominating prime real estate in the world’s wealthiest city of that time.

The family’s patriarch, Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt, at the young age of 16, is said to have managed to transform $100 that he borrowed from his mother, into a fortune At the time of his death on January 4, 1877, his inheritance to his family of over 100 million dollars, was more than what was held in the US Treasury at the time.

The Commodore started out piloting a passenger boat on Staten Island in 1810, developed the steamboat business, and went on to construct a railroad empire.

He is best known for building the New York Central Railroad, and provided the initial funds for the construction of Vanderbilt University. Born poor and with a mediocre education, his luck, perseverance and intelligence led into leadership positions.

Cornelius had a driven and coarse disposition. He was often feared because of his combative temperament. So much so, a book was written in the 1980s by a Vanderbilt ancestor which claimed that he was “illiterate, bad-tempered and vulgar, and inclined, when trapped into a social event, to be obnoxious and to spit streams of tobacco juice, and fondle the maids.”

However, overall, he was honorable, clever, and hardworking.

He publicly expressed his disappointment with his family. Out of thirteen children, he only had two boys, and strongly felt that these boys were not up to his standards. He didn’t think they had what it took to sustain the family wealth, but he was wrong. His son William expanded the railroad business and doubled the family fortune to over $200 million. That’s over $300 billion in today’s dollars.

down and their contents had been auctioned off. This is when their good fortune changed and their prominence declined, known as the “Fall of the House of Vanderbilt”.

Within just thirty years of the death of the Commodore, no member of the Vanderbilt family was among the richest in the US. And forty eight years after his death, one of his grandchildren is said to have been impoverished when he died.

In less than a single generation, the surviving Vanderbilts had spent the majority of their family wealth.

Their riches were virtually gone within four generations. How was this possible? Simply put, they went from producers of great wealth, to overindulging in it.

The Commodore’s children and

grandchildren tried to outdo each other in building increasingly massive and lavish homes. They set and followed the trends of New York’s high society. For recognition, they gave money away to fashionable charities. They held over-thetop legendary parties. They raced yachts, sports cars and horses, and indulged their fantasies at any cost.

Some were said to have developed substance abuse problems which created bad family publicity.

The Great Depression and the introduction of the income and estate taxes in the early 1900s undoubtedly took a considerable toll on the Vanderbilt fortune. However, families such as the Rothschilds, the Rockefellers, the Fords, and the Duponts were able to overcome these obstacles and preserve their

wealth. Members of these families continue to be on today’s billionaire’s list.

The Vanderbilts held a family reunion at Vanderbilt University in 1973, attended by 120 family members. Not even one of them was a millionaire.

Many successors of the family have authored books with titles such as Fortune’s Children: The Fall of the House of Vanderbilt and Dead End Gene Pool, the story about the family’s lost wealth. According to their descriptions, there was no organization or arrangements in how the family should transfer wealth from one generation to the next.

The Vanderbilts were overly extravagant and simply splurged their wealth. It proves that, no matter the amount, there’s no fortune that can’t be depleted.

HOW SHOULD INVESTORS RESPOND TO ‘BREXIT’? investments. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can ease the effects of volatility, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) As you know by now, the United Kingdom (U.K.) has voted to leave the European Union. The “Brexit” vote is expected to have major implications for Britain’s trade and economic relationships – but how might it affect you, as an individual investor?

At first glance, you might be worried. After all, right after the results came in, we saw a sharp decline in stock markets around the world, including here in the United States. And we may well see more volatility in the near term. But by taking a step back and looking at the big picture, you might see that the outlook for investors is nowhere near as gloomy as you may have thought.

Here are some suggestions for maintaining your perspective: Be patient. Despite the Brexit vote, it’s not so simple for the U.K. to just pack its bags and bid “adieu” to the European Union. In fact, it may take three or more years before the U.K. actually departs. This extended time period can give financial markets a chance to absorb the new reality – while giving investors time to ponder their long-term strategy.

Don’t forget about the “fundamentals.” Financial markets dislike uncertainty, which is why they fell so sharply after Brexit. But the markets move much faster than the fundamentals that actually drive stock prices – and, despite Brexit, these fundamentals remain generally positive. In the U.S., economic growth is expected to continue in the 2%–2.5% range, and the prospects of a recession remain small. U.S. companies will continue to operate in Britain as before, and British companies will still participate in the global economy.

Review your investment portfolio – and look for opportunities. If you’ve done a good job of building a diversified portfolio that’s based on your individual needs, goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you may not need to take any action in the immediate aftermath of Brexit. Diversification is especially important, because it’s possible that some financial assets may be more negatively affected by Brexit than others; you can blunt this impact by owning a wide range of 88 ShopInRI

Keep your focus on the long term. If Brexit-inspired volatility does go on for a while, keep your focus on your long-term financial goals, which have not changed. By staying focused on the “far horizon,” so to speak, you’ll be less tempted to make short-term moves that may not be in your best interest.

The Brexit vote may not be a positive development for the global economy. But we’ve gotten past bigger events in the past, including wars and other political crises, and we’ll get through this one, too. What’s on Your Bucket Lis t?

With summer here, it’s a perfect time to create a bucket list of activities that you will find enjoyable and that will satisfy your desires and temptations. Each person will have a different bucket list which is dependent upon their unique style, thoughts, passions, and interests.

Although Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union, there are endless places to go and an infinite number of places to see, which may potentially create a challenge.

However, if you concentrate on your true passions and put an emphasis on categories within your reach, you will succeed.

• Pawtucket Red Sox (commonly known as the Pawsox- McCoy Stadium- For an affordable night out, you can cheer on RI’s minor league baseball team and feel the camaraderie of local team supporters. As part of your experience, don’t forget to have a hot dog, hamburger, popcorn, or whatever suits your palate. Following certain scheduled games you can also experience a phenomenal fireworks display.

I must admit, I have not yet accomplished everything on my bucket list, however; I have not placed a time limit on reaching my bucket list goals, and I do intend to continue forward with meeting my bucket list objectives. Having a bucket list gives me what I most need when life gets stalesomething to look forward to, and the ability to indulge in my favorite things!

The following is a mere sample of 25 RI events, venues, entertainment, eateries, and favorite hotspots (in no particular order) that you may wish to add to your own personal bucket list.

• Ft. Adams State Park- Situated at the mouth of the Newport Harbor, Fort Adams State Park offers an exceptional panoramic view of both Newport Harbor and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. The park also offers a wide range of activities including salt water bathing, fishing, boating, soccer, rugby, and picnicking.

Fort Adams is perhaps best known for its annual summer concerts when the Newport Jazz Festival (July 29, 30, & 31 of 2016) and the Newport Folk Festival (July 22, 23, & 24 of 2016) host both local and countrywide jazz and folk artists and entertainers, which draw thousands to enjoy the music and beautiful surroundings.

• Charlestown Annual Seafood Festival- Come rain or shine (August 5, 6, & 7 of 2016) to celebrate an extravaganza of Rhode Island’s best seafood, lobsters, steamers, chowder, fish & chips, lobster rolls, clam cakes, corn on the cob and a raw bar, as well as an array of all types of foods for every taste. You will relish in a wide variety of arts and crafts on display, amusement rides, rock wall climbing, car show, Marcolites Kite exhibition, midway entertainment, bungee jumping, kayaking, 50/50 and lobster raffle and much, more of continuous entertainment and events.

• Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House- One of the most well known venues in southern RI, Iggy’s features award winning, yummy doughboys, chowder, clam cakes, fish & chips, and more. Dine-in or takeout, Iggy’s menu has an incredible selection of seafood including lobster rolls, scallops, and baked scrod. Iggy’s also has full selection of sandwiches, burgers, and salads.

• Bob & Timmy’s Grilled Pizza- I have never met a person who doesn’t like pizza and Bob & Timmy’s in Providence and Smithfield. Grilled on an open wood fire, the crust is thin and smoky with the perfect amount of tomato sauce, (gravy in my vocabulary-LOL) and any mouth watering topping you can think of. With indoor seating and a small garden area of outdoor seating at the Providence location, it’s the perfect spot to indulge, and you will look forward to the leftovers if you can resist eating everything you order.

Rhode Island Places to Be & See...

• Twin River Casino- Located in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Twin River is a full casino with live table games, video slot machines, and virtual table games. For those who are not the gambling type or if you want to mix it up, Twin River Casino also offers live entertainment and dining.

• Newport Mansions- The Newport Mansions are a must see at any time of the year! They are the preservation of Newport society. Rough Point was the Newport home of Doris Duke—heiress, philanthropist and art collector.

The Breakers, owned by the Vanderbilt family since the 1800s is one of the grandest mansions in Newport, with 70 Renaissance-style rooms full of priceless art. Today, it’s a national historic landmark. Built between 1888 and 1892 for the Vanderbilt family, Marble House is another of their “cottages.” Consisting of 500,000 cubic-feet of marble, the home was a gift to Mrs. Vanderbilt for her 39th birthday.

Modeled after a famous French chateau, The Elms was completed in 1901. The mansion is full of Renaissance ceramics, Oriental jades, and 18th century paintings.

Lastly, Rosecliff inspired by Versailles, was commissioned

by Nevada silver heiress, Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899. It was the site of some of Newport’s most opulent parties, and has since appeared in many films, including The Great Gatsby and Amistad. For those with high society taste, it is now a popular wedding venue.

• Roger Williams Park & Zoo- This RI landmark houses over 957 animals, representing 156 species in a naturalistic setting, and includes a children’s farmyard exhibit, a carousel, and a playground. It is one of the oldest zoos in the country and is located in Providence, amid a 40 acre park setting. A major, annual autumn feature is the highly anticipated park’s presentation of a breathtaking display of 5,000 illuminated jack-o-lanterns, with over 125 of them artistically carved and displayed in scenes to play out the annual theme. The presentation is a key fundraiser event to help maintain the park.

• Waterfire Providence- Waterfire transforms downtown Providence into a cost-free spectacular evening of delight. It is illuminated by one hundred fires that burn just above the surface of the rivers that flow through Waterplace Park and the middle of downtown Providence. The public is invited to come and walk the riverfront and enjoy the beauty of the flickering firelight, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the changing silhouettes of the volunteer firetenders, and the music from around the world – each of which engages the senses and emotions of all who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park and the walkways along the banks of the rivers.

• Quonset Point Air Show-The RI National Guard Air Show has been a RI tradition since 1991. The air show offers the finest aerial and static displays, along with activities for all ages. In June of 2016, the show will celebrate its 26th anniversary and will feature the USAF Thunderbirds. The show’s intent is to feature only the best aircraft and pilots, and to put on a world class show for the benefit of the community.

• Alex and Ani City Center-There is nothing better than ice-skating in the heart of downtown Providence and Newport during the winter months, at the Alex and Ani City Center! With a space double the size of Rockefeller Center, the Alex and Ani City Center is a destination for ice skating and special events!

What’s on Your Bucket Lis t?

• Block Island- The Block Island Ferry transports visitors to and from Block Island (at Galilee) between Memorial Day and Columbus Day. You will not have a problem filling your day with things to do as you navigate the island.

A place to relax, enjoy the plentiful beaches, take a hike on its 32 miles of trails, shop at its more than 50 stores and specialty shops, Block Island offers amenity for all ages.

Other activities include but are not limited to biking, fishing, horse back riding, kayaking, sailing and parasailing.

Dining experiences are as diverse as they are delicious.

• Scituate Art Festival-The Scituate Art Festival, in its 50th year, is an annual Rhode Island tradition over the Columbus Day weekend. Thousands of visitors stroll the beautiful Village Green, taking in some of the most unique varieties of art, craft, sculpture and antiques, not to mention sample the vast assortment of food and autumn desserts.

My favorite is the apple dumpling, sprinkled with cinnamon. Once you experience the festival, you will be sure to return every year.

• Trinity Repertory- Trinity Repertory is a Tony Awardwinning professional theater in Providence that produces classic and contemporary plays, including an annual production of “A Christmas Carol,” for an estimated annual audience of 120,000. In its 52-year history, the theater has produced nearly 58 world premieres, mounted national and international tours and, through its MFA program, trained hundreds of new actors and directors. For those who love plays, season tickets are a must.

• Providence Place Mall-Indulge in brands you love at the best shopping mall in Rhode Island. Visit Providence Place Mall for the ultimate in shopping and dining, with over 160 stores and boutiques, and more than 52 quick dine and eat-in restaurants. The mall is also connected to the Omni Hotel for out of town visitors or if you want to enjoy a special night away from home.

• Federal Hill-Recognized as one of the top culinary destinations in the country with many award-winning restaurants to choose from, Federal Hill is also known as “Little Italy”. The restaurants on the Hill will tantalize your taste buds with dishes from many regions in Italy. If you’re not in the mood for Italian, you can also enjoy delicious Chinese, Mediterranean, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Lebanese, Caribbean, and Cuban food. The gateway arch over Atwells Avenue near Downtown is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Rhode Island. Federal Hill also hosts the annual Columbus Day parade in October, the Federal Hill Stroll in June, (experience a sampling of signature cuisine from the Hill’s restaurants and vendors) and The Feast of St. Joseph in April when you can sample the delicious, traditional Italian Zeppole pastry from the many Federal Hill bakeries.

• Brickley’s Ice Cream- Brickley’s, a favorite Narragansett hot spot, with ice cold homemade, premier ice cream that is bar none. With 45 tempting flavors, it is impossible to leave without taking some home.

My favorite is the Apple Pie flavored and I could eat it morning, noon, and night. The homemade waffle cones are another specialty that makes Brickley’s outstanding.

• Newport Vineyards-For the wine connoisseur or for anyone who has an interest in wine, Newport Vineyards will undoubtedly satisfy you and your palate. Aquidneck Island is blessed with one of the most desirable farming areas in the country, if not the world.

This extraordinary micro-climate is created by a combination of the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to the south and the moderating effects of Narragansett Bay. These conditions provide a long, cool growing season ideal for developing complex flavors in wine. From wine tasting to group tours and live music, as well as a wedding venue option, Newport Vineyards has picture-perfect lovely scenery of 40 wine acres.

Rhode Island Places to Be & See...

• Coast Guard House-This perfectly situated restaurant offers a stunning and unrivalled view of the pier districts’ historic Narragansett Bay and is located on Ocean Road in Narragansett. The Coast Guard House Restaurant established itself in the 1940s and is revered for serving locally harvested seafood. The restaurant was transformed in 1979 to a year round dining destination. Over the past decade, they have been recognized on a state and national level as a premier dining destination. At nighttime, The Coast Guard House is a favorite hotspot for college students and others to socialize, relax, and have a few drinks.

• RISD Museum-The RISD Museum acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets works of art and design representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. Distinguished by its relationship to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the museum educates and inspires artists, designers, students, scholars, and the general public through exhibitions, programs, and publications.

• Pasta Beach-The only problem you may have at Pasta Beach is choosing just one meal from their menu. Located on Memorial Blvd. in Newport, Pasta Beach is a perfectly situated, natural place to go for freshly made Italian food.

From bruschetta, to pasta dishes, to pizza, Pasta Beach does everything perfect to make you come back again and again. And forget the sitter; it’s a perfect place to bring the kids.

• Jeanette’s Bakery-Nothing more than a “hole in the wall,” Jeanette’s variety and flavorful calzones are “to die for”. If it weren’t for the sign hanging over the door, you’d surely drive by Jeannette’s. It appears out of nowhere on a largely residential stretch of Branch Avenue in Providence.

You may want to call ahead because their calzones are so delicious, they don’t last long, and once they are gone, you will have to wait for the next day. Call to order a massive tray with an assortment of calzones (for a very fair price) for any gathering. Your guests will thank you!

• Port of Galilee- The Port of Galilee, part of Narragansett Rhode Island is an authentic working New England fishing village. Galilee has a great selection of seafood restaurants, shops, a local hotel, and is close to two state beaches, Roger Wheeler and Salty Brine, with Scarborough and Narragansett just a few miles away. A perfect place to visit for a day, or to head to after a day at the beach, Galilee has that beachy-vacation feeling that keeps you from wanting to go home. You will want to watch the lobster and crab boats come in (As a kid, my father took us there every weekend after the beach and I loved it…the smell of the salt water and the calm of the outdoor atmosphere brought me serenity.) and maybe even take some fresh catch home. Or, you may enjoy sitting at one of the many area seafood restaurants to relax and take in the sights, to perfectly end off your day.

• International Tennis Hall of Fame and MuseumThe International Tennis Hall of fame is set in the Newport Casino, a beautiful facility that dates back to 1880 and has an interesting history in tennis and in Newport. Located on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, the facility is also a pictureperfect setting for a wedding or other event. The Museum at the International Tennis Hall of Fame features over 13,000 square feet of exhibits and has exciting interactive exhibits about the history of the sport and the current game.

• Allie’s Donuts- It’s not a dream-it’s Allies Donuts! Allies was passed on to Walter “Bud” and Anne Briggs Drescher (Briggs’ oldest daughter) in 1986. These scrumptious donuts are still handmade, fresh daily, and they come in all the usual varieties, from simple old-fashioned plain to those filled with jelly or custard- my favorite is those with the sprinkles! One of the secrets to their appeal is a special kind of flour imported from a small company, Dawn Foods, in Wisconsin. It’s so secret that even the Dreschers don’t know what ingredients go into it.

Crate Games – Tips for helping your dog love his crate!

By: Heidi Palmer McNeil Pooch Pawsitive www.poochpawsitive.com In the wild, dogs live in a den and it is natural for them to eat and sleep there. The den is usually a safe place for dogs to go. Most of the time, dogs like to go into their cozy den. But then there’s the occasion when dogs just don’t like it and want no part of it!

Why do we need to use a crate? For puppies, we use a crate for housetraining. At the veterinarian, a crate is used for rest, confinement, or medical treatment. At the groomer, they use a crate for keeping a dog still while blow-drying. In a car or on an airplane, we use a crate to keep the dog safe and confined. At home, we use a crate to keep our dog out of mischief. If your dog needs to do any of these things, then you will need your dog to like, or at least tolerate a crate.

Here are some tips for helping your dog adjust to a crate: • In a safe room or small area (like an exercise pen or kitchen), leave the crate door open and randomly toss treats into the crate. When your dog goes to investigate, he will be pleasantly rewarded with something good!

• If your dog won’t even go close to the crate, you can leave a trail of treats from the middle of the room toward the front, and just inside the crate.

• You can also put your dog’s food bowl just inside the crate and leave the door open. As your dog gets braver,

gradually move the food bowl toward the back of the crate so that its whole body has to go inside. Continue to leave the crate door open.

• I like to teach the dog by stating, “Go in your crate” and tossing a treat inside and letting the dog go in to get it. Then, I’ll immediately say, “Come on out” and toss a treat outside of the crate so that the dog has to come out. Play this game with your dog’s dry food (kibble) at mealtime.

• Once the dog is readily going into the crate, repeat the above exercise and close the crate door for 1 second.

Then state, “Come on out”. Repeat this until the dog doesn’t mind the door being closed for 1 second. Then, gradually increase the amount of time that the crate door is closed. Close the door for 2 seconds, 3 seconds, 4 seconds, etc., until the dog gets comfortable with being in the crate for longer periods of time.

Sometimes, a dog just has a really bad association with a crate. If you can identify the cause, then work with a certified trainer to help with the problem. Otherwise, try an alternative confinement area like an exercise pen, or room of its own, to keep your dog safe while you are not home.

Coping With the Loss of a Pet

By Susan Gazerro The following steps should help you with coping with the loss of a pet. Before I explain how to deal with the loss of a pet, I feel I must repeat what I’ve said in previous articles; animals are innocent, or at least, a lot more innocent than people. When an animal does something that’s considered awful or mean, they are doing what instinct and nature have created them to do. Let me add, it might be what “man” has taught them to do. Animals do what their instinct tells them to do to survive.

I say this because if you believe this, it makes it even harder when you lose a pet. You know in your heart they are innocent, and they have loved you unconditionally. Do not feel you are wrong or abnormal for mourning over your pet. If you are a true pet lover, that pet was an important part of your family.

How to Cope:

You Did Me a Kindness: When my legs grew too weak to carry me, And my tired eyes could no longer see, When it pained me to struggle for each new breath, When my heart beat weaker and I drew closer to death, You did me the kindness of letting me go.

You didn’t make me hang on when I was suffering so.

You freed my spirit from its body so wracked with pain, And let me run the fields of Heaven, where I’m sure we’ll meet again.

If you have family or friends who are pet lovers, they will understand. It helps to talk about your pet and your feelings. Pet lovers understand, they truly understand. Do not expect someone who is not an animal person or pet owner to understand how you feel, or to be able to comfort you. I believe people are, or are not animal lovers. The ones who are not, just do not understand.

The next thing you will feel is guilt, anger, depression, or even denial. This is normal, but let me tell you, and I speak from experience, it is NOT your fault. If you are a true pet lover, you probably did everything you could before your pet passed; or, you had to resort to euthanizing your pet. Feelings of guilt will be there; trust me, however; when it comes to that point, your pet is thanking you. You are saving them from pain and feelings of being uncomfortable. You may question, “When is the right time to euthanize your pet?” Your vet can help with this decision, however; I believe with all my heart, you will know when the time is right. You should not be selfish about this for YOU; you need to do what’s best for your pet and you.

A couple of things that helped me personally were, the “Final Gift” and “Pet Gems”.

I never ever thought I would cremate my pet. I was convinced I would bury my pet. The morning I found her I was on the phone with a friend who said, “Hang up and call the “Final Gift”.” I didn’t even think twice. For the first time, I knew I needed her ashes so she could always be with me. They came, picked her up, let me choose an urn and I opted for a private cremation. The other company that brought me peace was “Pet Gems”. “Pet Gems” takes a small portion of your pet’s ashes and literally makes a gem that you can wear. I opted for a crucifix, in which the top opens and the ashes are poured in.

I then knew I could wear it, hang it in my car, etc. I would always have her with me.

The next question becomes how soon should I get another pet? When my first baby, Aspen, passed away, the majority of people said, “Go get another dog”. In my heart, I could not replace her. I needed to grieve the loss and I just couldn’t run and get another dog. Everyone is different when it comes to this. Some people do need to get another dog right away, while others need time. Other factors may play a role as well.

When my Aspen passed, I also had a lot of other changes happening in my life, and I just didn’t have the time for a puppy. I did not want to leave a puppy in a crate all day while I was off to work. I believe, just like knowing when the time is right to euthanize your pet, you will also know when the time is right to get another pet. For me it was five years. The circumstances were all right when I adopted Will. There was no questioning if I should adopt him. I knew it was the right thing to do, at the right time; and, so will you!

Wanted Dead or Alive

Liberty Mobility Buys and Sells Power Wheelchairs and Scooters As a writer, I have the honor of meeting and interviewing a lot of people. Everyone is special in their own way, but every once in a while I am privileged to meet an extraordinary individual who is truly doing something for the good of mankind. I recently met and interviewed one of those people, Paul Long.

Paul is the owner of Liberty Mobility which helps thousands of people in need of powered wheelchairs and scooters. Paul’s story is so fascinating I am honored to write about it.

Paul was a contractor, bidding jobs and working hard everyday. On his occasional day off, Paul enjoyed going to yard & garage sales. Well, one day back in the summer of 2010, little did he know, a yard sale was about to change his life.

When he arrived, he realized this was an estate sale. Everything had to go. As Paul was being Paul, he had to look at everything. You can say Paul at an estate sale is like a woman in a shoe store. Again, having to look at everything, making sure he didn’t miss anything. The first thing that caught Paul’s eye was a brass bed from Italy with an asking price of $350.

Again, Paul being Paul, he was going to attempt a negotiation. Well, the only negotiation that was happening was Paul negotiating with Paul. The owner was not budging on the price. Paul continued to look, knowing he was leaving with that bed even if he had to pay the full asking price. The other thing about Paul Long is when he wants something, he wants it, and nothing is going to get in his way.

Paul then stumbles upon a powered wheelchair in the garage with an asking price of $25.00. Paul thought, “It has to be worth something; maybe I can refurbish it and sell it”. He was determined to feel he was a good negotiator and would get something, so he asked the owner to throw the wheelchair in and he would pay full price for the bed. Done deal! Little did Paul know, this deal was about to change his life. Although he knew very little, if anything, about wheelchairs, he felt he won the negotiation and being a carpenter, figured he could do something with the chair. He refurbished the wheelchair and listed it on eBay. No interest! Not one bid on the chair; so he decided to take the chair apart and sell the usable parts separately. Before long, Paul had a thriving business, as he was able to use his talents as a contractor to disassemble and refurbish the good, usable parts, and reassemble powered wheelchairs and scooters. What was most rewarding was he was able to sell them at a fraction of the price of a new chair or scooter, and he found himself a huge market of people who were so thankful they could afford the devices they so desperately needed. What meant more to him was he found himself in a position to help so many people and he wasn’t just working to make money; he felt rewarded, something he had never really felt in the past. Liberty Mobility was born and right up

to this day, Paul will tell you it’s a win/win. He wins because to him he is no longer making a living working. He is doing something he loves, and helping so many people afford something that would normally cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. For the buyer it’s a win, because again, they can afford something that will change and enhance their life.

Prior to the birth of Liberty Mobility, most of these people were living very isolated lives. These chairs and scooters are a sense of freedom and independence.

I’m going to fast forward to the year 2015. Paul received a call from someone looking for a powered wheelchair for 7 year old, JD, whose dad was in the service and they were living in NY. JD recently came down with a debilitating disease and needed a chair to be mobile. On this day, Paul did not have and never had a chair that small. The very next day, Liberty Mobility received a call to buy a used chair the exact size needed for JD. This was truly a miracle. Paul refurbished the chair and arrangements were made for Paul and his team to deliver the chair to JD. JD’s family was going to come here to Rhode Island. There would be news coverage, JD’s family and friends, Paul’s team, etc. What was weighing on Paul’s mind was, “What’s JD’s reaction going to be? Is he going to cry when he sees the chair, knowing he is now going to have to rely on a wheelchair for movement?” Well, to Paul and everyone’s amazement, JD smiled the biggest smile ever when he was presented with the chair! I believe this is one of the highlights of not only Paul’s career, but his life. His eyes filled up sharing the story for this article. Paul is truly an amazing human being and I thank him for sharing his story with me so that I could share it with you.

From City to Sea: The Providence to Newport Ferry is Now Full Steam Ahead By: Neko catanzaro

Anticipation was high for the July 1st debut of Seastreak’s Providence to Newport ferry route. The launch was serendipitously timed, not only in coordination with the Independence Day holiday, but also with the Travel and Leisure magazine’s “Best Places to Travel in July” feature, which included historic Newport, Rhode Island. The maiden voyage proved popular with more than 1,000 people hopping on board the new transit connection during its first weekend of operation. All of the morning trips were sold out, from Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4.

The ferry is set to run three round trips, Monday through Thursday, and four round trips, Friday through Sunday, as well as on holidays, between India Point in Providence and Perotti Park in Newport. The fare is $10 each way for adults, with discounted tickets for seniors, children and disabled riders. In addition, complimentary shuttle bus service is available between the Providence train station, Convention Center, downtown, and the Providence to Newport ferry terminal.

Seastreak is known for its reliability, luxury, and comfort, running a fleet of high-speed catamaran services to points in Manhattan, New Jersey, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard. Its Providence to Newport vessel is aptly named the “Ocean State”, and is a 65-foot M/V catamaran that holds a maximum of 149 passengers. Both pet-friendly and bike-friendly, the highspeed ferry also includes bar service. At speeds of 30 knots, the “Ocean State” makes the Providence to Newport trip a relaxing 45 minutes, which is an enjoyable alternative to the highly trafficked route, road construction, and bridge crossings.

“Newport is always a hot vacation spot, and Seastreak is delighted to provide an easy transportation option for people to get there in this peak travel season,” said John Silvia, Seastreak’s Operations Manager. “We continually look for new routes that 114 ShopInRI

will offer passengers a wider choice of destinations to explore.”

As one of Rhode Island’s premier destinations, Newport is even livelier in the summer months. Bellevue Avenue’s mansions, the Vanderbilt’s illustrious summer retreat, and The Breakers have become go-to day trips for sightseers and visitors from all over the world. The seaport city’s yachting lifestyle also caters to vacationing stars and music lovers who come out in droves for the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival. Besides Newport’s many tourist attractions, the port boasts a coveted nightlife that locals praise. A hot spot and a cool escape for those who want to beat the heat of Providence, Newport’s sea breeze and diverse selection of dining establishments provides the perfect destination for a night out on the town.

For locals, the route is a familiar one that formerly ran from 2000 to 2008. According to the Public Utilities Commission, the services’ riders peaked between 30,000 to 40,000 during its 2000-2008 operation. The state estimates that throughout the summer’s high-commute levels, the service has the potential to remove between 15,000-20,000 cars off the road on any given day.

Less emission is one of the main reasons for the reestablishment of the service; and RIDOT is already pleased with the high number of walk-ons and bicycle toting passengers.

RIDOT is utilizing a $500,000 US Department of Transportation grant to fund the ferry service.

Despite Seastreak’s inaugural success and extensive tourism opportunities, it is still a pilot program. RIDOT will evaluate the service at the end of its season to determine whether or not the ferry will continue in 2017. New England Patriots Offensive Lineman Sebastian Vollmer takes steps to block further hair loss Born in Germany, New England Patriots offensive lineman and Super Bowl Champion Sebastian Vollmer thought male hair loss was simply a part of life, and was unaware that there were treatment options available.
