TRAVELTIPS It Will Soon Be Illegal to Use US Passports to Enter North Korea

The Trump administration will ban American citizens from traveling to North Korea following the death of university student Otto Warmbier, reports the AP. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has decided to impose a “geographic travel restriction” for North Korea, which would make it illegal to use US passports to enter the country, say US officials. Since 1967, such bans have been imposed intermittently on countries such as Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, Cuba, and North Vietnam. But the US doesn’t currently prohibit its passports from being used to travel to any countries, even though financial restrictions limit US travel to Cuba and elsewhere. If a passport ban were placed on North Korea, an American who violated it could face a fine and up to 10 years in prison for a first offense.

The officials say the restriction will go into effect 30 days after a notice is published in the Federal Register, but it was not immediately clear when that would be. They were not authorized to publicly discuss the decision before it is announced and spoke on condition of anonymity. However, two tour operators that organize group trips to North Korea say they had already been informed of the decision. It isn’t clear how many Americans the move will impact, as figures about how many Americans go to North Korea are difficult for even the US government to obtain. Americans who venture there typically travel from China, where several tour groups market trips to adventure-seekers.

Mirabella’s Italian Cucina

Bringing old world flavor from The Hill to Warwick By: Jenn Lombari

Mirabella’s Italian Cucina took their roots from “The Hill” in Providence and branched out to Governor Francis Plaza on Namquid Drive, off Warwick Avenue in Warwick.

That’s where you’ll find Cheryl Mirabella, owner and operator of this unique, outstanding Italian restaurant.

Mirabella has been cooking up a reputation for some of the best, authentic Italian cuisine in the state!

Growing up on Federal Hill in Providence, she learned how to cook from watching her mother, Carol Mirabella, and her grandfather. Her mother would send her over to her grandfather’s kitchen to help him clean, but somehow, the cleaning never happened. Her grandfather would tell her, “Sit down and watch me cook. A man wants a woman who can cook. If you can cook good, you’ll get any man you want.” He taught her the family recipes; the Santangelo family recipes that were his mother’s.

Nothing was measured. Everything was eyeballed and done by taste.

The idea to open her restaurant evolved from another business that she owned, a small ice cream shop on Allens Ave. in Providence called Fran’s. It was there when she was eating her lunch that she brought from home. A few utility workers had come by and were so mesmerized by the aroma of what she was eating and how good it smelled; they asked if she could make them some. Word got around and soon after getting the proper food licenses, Fran’s was selling meatball sandwiches and other delightful Italian dishes.

and eat herself. She emphasized, “If I wouldn’t cook it and eat it at home, I don’t serve it.” She tries to buy as much produce from markets that sell local vegetables. She even buys her veal from Fred-Rick Veal Co. on Federal Hill. Everything is made to order. There is no food sitting in sterno pans waiting to be served. While there are many “grab and go items, it’s best to call ahead if you’re in a hurry. People who say, “I only eat my mother’s meatballs,” end up loving the authentic flavor and texture of Mirabella’s family recipe. You can also get traditional plates of veal and peas, lasagna, shepherd’s pie, and her pasta fagioli is a winter favorite. All of the cold cuts and cheeses are Boar’s Head brand. Her Italian tuna recipe is also a favorite, along with her delicious chicken salad. Not a granule of sugar goes into the chicken salad and it has a big taste! Maybe you’re

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

GRAVLAX RECIPE

Ingredients: 2 lbs. wild-caught salmon, skin on, pin bones removed 2/3 cup (100g) Kosher salt (I use Diamond Crystal) 1/3 cup (80g) sugar (I use natural beet sugar) 1 large bunch fresh dill, washed

I love salmon in all forms, but not cooked. To me, cooking changes the true flavor of this fantastic fish; so I enjoy it raw (as in sashimi), smoked, and cured. Curing, which is how you get Gravlax, is really quite simple.

You just need to have enough patience to wait a few days before you eat it.

The first step, of course, is to choose the right piece of salmon. Avoid Atlantic salmon. It’s farmed, and there are far too many negative things associated with it to fit on this page! What you do want is that beautiful, vibrant, almost-orange wild-caught Alaskan or Pacific salmon that costs more than you thought you were going to spend. Wild-caught means that the salmon has eaten the foods it loves, a natural diet that gives the meat of the fish that beautiful color, and incredible flavor.

If your fish monger hasn't removed the pin bones from your salmon filet, you'll need to get a pair of long-nose pliers and remove them. It's not the worst thing in the world to leave them in, but you really don't want to be spitting bones out later.

Get a non-reactive tray long enough to hold the salmon filet. I prefer glass.

Mix the salt and the sugar together, and sprinkle half of it evenly on the bottom of the glass tray. Lay the piece of salmon down on the cure, skin side down, and evenly cover the top of the salmon with the rest of the cure.

Lay the sprigs of dill on top of the cure, covering the entire piece of fish.

Cover everything with several layers of plastic wrap, pushing it down and tucking it into the corners for a tight fit. Find a flat board or something similar and lay it on top of the plastic wrap. Add heavy weights on top to press down evenly on all of the salmon’s surfaces. I use cans of tomatoes.

After 24 hours, remove the plastic wrap and tilting the tray, baste the dill-covered salmon with the brine juices that have formed. Put clean plastic wrap on top, add the weights, and put it all back in the fridge for another 24 hours. Repeat that process at the 48-hour mark, if needed.

You'll know the fish is fully cured when the thickest part of the filet is firm to the touch.

Unwrap the salmon, discarding the salt and sugar brine, and the dill. Rinse the filet under cold running water and pat dry with paper towels.

To serve, place the gravlax skin-side down on a board. With a long, sharp narrow-bladed knife, slice the fish against the grain, on the diagonal, into thin pieces. Serve with mustard-dill sauce, chopped onion, capers, hardboiled egg, bread, and/or whatever you like.

Refrigerate any remaining gravlax immediately, wrapped in plastic wrap for up to 2 weeks.

Turn the saucepan with the veal broth on high and reduce it to about 1/2 cup. Season it with salt and pepper.

In a large pot, cook the pasta to a bit firmer than al dente in well-salted water. Drain and set aside.

In the large sauce pan with the meatballs, add the butter and the half-andhalf. Add the reduced veal broth, the pasta, and the peas.

Gently mix the ingredients in the pan until the peas have warmed through and the sauce clings to the pasta. Serve immediately.

Narragansett Chamber of Commerce Presents the 3rd Annual Rhode Island Calamari Festival The 3rd annual Rhode Island Calamari Festival will be held on Saturday, September 9th at Veteran’s Park in Narragansett. The Festival opens at 11:00am, with the premier event of the day, The Calamari Cook-off, running from noon-4pm. Eleven restaurants will compete for top honors with their unique calamari dishes. Last year’s winners for Best Overall, Most Inventive and Most Spirited Team included George’s of Galilee and PJ’s Pub. Looking to make a comeback and win this year will be the winners of the 2015 event, the Coast Guard House and Arturo Joes, as well as seven additional restaurants: Chapel Grille, Charlie O’s Tavern, Frederickson Farm Stand Café, Mariner Grille, Mews Tavern, Chair 5, and 210 Oyster Bar! Tickets are just $10 per person and children under 12 attend for free.

Come with the entire family or groups of friends, or just stroll on in yourself and enjoy unlimited calamari samples, shop the vendor marketplace, dine at food trucks, and listen to live music throughout the day. The live entertainment will kick off with the band Orange Whip, followed by The Brian Scott Band, and will culminate with The Ravers bringing us their popular reggae beats!

There is also a beer garden sponsored this year by Heineken and will feature three of their top selling brands for purchase. The Festival concludes at 6pm or until the last calamari ring is consumed! Narragansett is a beautiful town to visit all summer and it was once called “Americas First Resort” because of its picturesque coastline. But what goes on after the summer is just as special. Starting the weekend of September 9th, all beach parking lots are open to the public at no cost. So you can spend a day at the beach and take in the Calamari Festival for food, fun and great music.

The South County Trolley, based in Narragansett, will be running for additional parking convenience and for just 2 bucks you can ride the trolley around the town all day long!

In June of 2014, Governor Lincoln Chafee signed a bill that was passed through Rhode Island’s state legislature designating calamari as Rhode Island’s official state appetizer. In 2015, The Rhode Island Calamari Festival was created to celebrate the anniversary of the bill’s passage. It may seem that designating an official state appetizer was just a feel good law that was adopted to appeal both to tourists and residents, but in actuality, it was a celebration of Rhode Island’s squid industry.

Many people don’t know that Galilee is New England’s second largest commercial fishing point. Most don’t know that Rhode Island places second nationally for squid landings, with the exception of 2016 where Rhode Island fisherman had a record season and led the country in squid processing. Rhode Island squid has an international reputation for its quality, and most of the squid brought in through The Port of Galilee is shipped to points all over the US and abroad. The partners in this festival and some of the largest processors of squid in Rhode Island are Seafreeze, SeaFresh and Town Dock. Statler Chicken Breast with Peach Vinaigrette and Summer Vegetable Panzanella

By Chef Adam Baffoni ~ Photos by Kelly Meyer To me, summer is all about simple food. This time of year, Rhode Island is flourishing with fresh fruits and vegetables, straight from our small farmers. When you have ingredients this pure, you only need a few to create an amazing meal.

This dish was inspired by the bounty of the summer growing season and is perfect for a hot August day. For this recipe, I use a statler chicken breast, which is a chicken breast that has the first wing joint still attached, but it can be made with a regular chicken breast if you prefer. The vinaigrette can be prepared ahead of time and served cold.

Directions

Ingredients 2 statler chicken breasts 1 clove garlic, minced 1 medium-sized zucchini, diced 2 medium-sized tomatoes, diced 1 loaf Italian bread, diced

For the vinaigrette, puree the peach in a blender with the cider vinegar and salt to taste. While the blender is running, slowly drizzle in the oil. Taste and season, if necessary.

For the panzanella, heat a small amount of oil in a large pan. Saute the garlic until barely browned, then add the tomatoes, zucchini and white wine. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 5-10 minutes over medium heat, until the vegetables are wilted. Just before serving, add the diced bread and toss it with the vegetables so that it soaks up the juice and wine that is in the pan.

½ cup white wine 1 peach, peeled and pitted 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 1 cup neutral oil, such as canola

For the chicken, heat a small amount of oil in a saute pan until very hot. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and place it in the pan, skin side down, until well browned. Flip and cook for 3-4 minutes more, until the flesh is white when cut open at the thickest part.

To serve, divide the panzanella among two plates, top each with a chicken breast and finish with a few

Creamy Corn Pasta & Cherry Tomatoes

It’s corn season in RI and it is such a versatile food to incorporate in a fun, tasty summer dish. Pairing it with pasta, fresh tomatoes and local green onions is a great way to try something different and make an entire meal from seasonal farm crops. The mascarpone cheese adds a nice creamy texture, without making it too heavy.

It’s a great dish for both lunch and dinner, and tastes even better as leftovers.

Ingredients: 1 box of penne pasta (cooked to taste) 6 ears of corn (shucked and boiled) 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 large container of cherry tomatoes or 2 small ones (cut in halves) 6 cloves of garlic (minced) 4-5 green onions (chopped, tops too) 8 oz. mascarpone cheese 1 lemon Salt Pepper

Directions: In a large pan, sauté the corn, garlic, and green onions with olive oil on medium heat. After they get soft, add the cherry tomatoes and cook until tender. Take off the stove top and set aside.

Charlestown’s annual Seafood Festival draws thousands of visitors looking to savor local lobster, clams and mussels, fish & chips, lobster rolls, clam cakes, corn on the cob, a raw bar, and a variety of all types of foods for every taste. Visitors will also experience a wide array of first-rate performers. The small seaside city on Rhode Island’s southern coast offers festival-goers long, sandy beaches for sunning and swimming, several historic districts to explore, and a wildlife refuge where birdwatchers may catch glimpses of kestrels and sandpipers.

There is on-street parking and metered parking along India Street and Bridge Street, and the parking lot for the Newport ferry beneath I-195.

We have chairs and tables for you to eat at, but you can feel free to bring your own chairs or picnic blankets. Due to health and licensing regulations, outside beverages and goods are strictly prohibited.

Admission is $5 for adults, ith free entry for children under 12 years of age. The ticket price includes entry for one day of the festival, with several hours of live music and entertainment for all ages. Food is not included in the ticket price, but is for sale separately at various restaurant vendors.

There certainly is. The drinks tent is run by the festival itself (as opposed to an outside vendor) and provides a range of local beers, wine, spirits and soda, as well as festival merchandise.

In this month’s article, I thought I would just ramble on a little bit about some hair tips that you might find interesting; so with that in mind, hair are some great tips and advice on hair care that will help you look your very best at all times!

KEEPING HAIR TOOLS CLEAN… • Always keep your hair care tools clean (well tip #1).

• Use shampoo or body soap to clean them each week.

• Keeping your hair care tools clean, will keep your hair cleaner as you brush it.

• Use a comb to thoroughly clean your brushes.

• Make sure to rinse them thoroughly and allow them to dry completely before using them. There are some people who are convinced that excessive shampooing is harmful to their hair, so they have started using dry shampoo products. Such products can present significant drawbacks.

When the hair is not rinsed, residual traces of the shampoo can remain in the hair. This can weigh hair down and make it appear greasy.

THE QUALITY OF AIR IN YOUR HOME… The quality of air in your home is very important to your hair and skin.

To improve the quality of air in your home, use a humidifier, if you can.

This device can help to make the air in your home or apartment comfortable, while also restoring moisture to your hair and skin.

A WORD ABOUT SPLIT ENDS… While there are products available on the market that promise to repair split ends, there is nothing you can do that will really restore your hair back to its original state, short of a haircut. You can apply some different hair products to temporally help it look better; but in order to make it really look healthier, the split ends should be cut off.

HAIR DRYERS… FIRST....make sure you use a comb that has wide teeth, or use a pick to comb tangles out of your hair. Do this when your hair is just damp, so it will more easily move through your hair. You can also use a leave-in conditioner that can make it easier to comb. Hot air will not damage your hair, as long as you use a product to protect the hair!

For the past couple of seasons the Maxi dress has been a staple for many women during hot, summer days. I have a friend who is 5’4 who was intimidated to wear one because she thought she would too short. Not true, you can find Maxi dresses at any length and they look super chic with a long necklace and tan skin.

I have a go-to black Maxi dress that I always bring out for summer weddings and I pair it with long gold necklaces.

I am all about convenience. One thing I am not good at is putting together outfits down to the last detail. Jumpsuits have been a saving grace for that fashionista who wants to look chic but doesn’t have the time nor patience to put together an ensemble. Jumpsuits come in any fabric so you can choose if you want casual or tailored. You can even wear jumpsuits to evening events with the right shoe and accessories. And again, you can find a style for any body type; you can even get Bermuda short jumpsuits.

These camisoles are a musthave. They come in every color under the rainbow and you can get them at most department stores, discount stores and boutiques. I must own at least 25 of these and they always make you look put together. They normally are not fitted and have a blouse effect, which makes them transitional from day to night.

They can be paired with jeans, skirts, shorts, etc you name it.

Sometimes you can find some that have enough draping where you can wear sans bra.

Now that’s a huge plus in humid weather, right ladies?

Shorts a must have in the summer months. They are easy, the come in so many cute summer patterns and if you have some killer legs, they are a definite. If you are like me and don’t have the legs you wish you had, longer more tailored Bermuda shorts should be your go to with some stylish wedges or sandal. You want to make sure your shorts fit your body well and that they are accentuating the right parts. The best thing about a longer short is that they look great on ALL body types.

The Gladiator Sandal I can’t even get in to how many adorable styles are out right now for the gladiator sandal. I am not a big espadrille, wedge girl.

But I am a huge gladiator sandal girl. You can find a pair of these for super casual outfits or if you want to spend a little cash, a pair that are super well made and fashionable.

I love pairing these with Bermuda shorts, especially if they are the style that extends up the angle. I call them “summer booties”. The only think you need to do is make sure the piggies are pedicured.

Kessa Kreations & Devil’s Halo

By Jenn Lombari “Stand up and stand out,” is what local rock n roll fashion designer, Kessa Halo suggests. ”Don’t look like you just got off the couch to get up on stage or go to a show. If you’re going to wear your favorite shirt to a concert, make it STAND OUT! Make it look great. Wave your freak flag high!”

Kessa started designing her own clothes in high school when she couldn’t find a wrap for the prom; nothing came in a color that matched her dress. Anything she found in a magazine was too expensive and there was nothing that caught her eye at local malls. “Back in the day, people thought if you made your own clothes or if your mom made your clothes, it meant you were less fortunate than others.

Both my parents are doctors and I still made my own clothes,” explains Halo. “I never cared what other people thought. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t mind being pointed out. I used to shop second hand because I didn’t want to look like everyone else. Now I found a way to share my creativity with other people who don’t like to blend in.”

After attending her first rock concert (Iron Maiden) at the age of 13, Halo was hooked. The local and international rock and metal scenes became her home, and she started making many connections and developing new friendships.

This new network of people played a big role in Kessa getting her name and her products out there in the public eye.

Even the band, Tango Down, has credited Devil’s Halo and Kessa Kreations on their album, and John Arch of Fates Warning is wearing a Devil’s Halo vest on stage in Europe on their 30th Anniversary Tour DVD. Go to a rock or metal show in Rhode Island and you’ll likely see people wearing these unique items. Halo has made stage wear for the band Black Knight’s Castle, and Metal: 101, to name just a few. She has also been recreating stage wear for tribute bands that want the exact look of what the bands wore.

She started by making pocketbooks for herself. Pocketbooks that had a very metal/biker type look to them. Embellished in spikes, studs and crosses, and no two alike, people saw them and started asking her to make them one, as a gift

The History of Labor Day Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of our country.

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some controversy as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”

But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday.

Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire,

later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.

• Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.

There are many different ways to celebrate Labor Day and, even if you’re not particularly interested in the holiday itself, it still gives us a three-day weekend, and serves as a suiting send off to the summer.

Facts About Labor Day:

• Labor Day started as a part of the labor union movement, to recognize the contributions of men and women in the US workforce, but modernly is seen as a chance to celebrate the last weekend of summer.

• The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.

• 10,000 workers marched from City Hall all the way to 42nd Street and then met with their families in Wendel’s Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches.

• Canada is said to have originated the idea of hosting a day honoring the labor movement. In 1872, they held a “Nine-Hour Movement” to show support for striking workers.

• Americans worked 12-hour days seven days a week during the 19th century!

The Nutrition Station Opens Its Doors on August 26th!

CRANSTON - The efforts of several people to bring a healthier alternative to the numerous fast food options comes to fruition at the end of August, as The Nutrition Station officially opens for business at its location on 935 Park Ave. in Cranston.

Co-Owner David Piatek said that he and the Station’s other coowner, Johnna Pitochelli, chose that location because of the myriad of potentially unhealthy food choices in that area. He added that giving people the opportunity to come in and try different flavor combinations to determine their favorites empowers them to learn more about other healthier options.

Piatek noted how surprised people might become when they initially enter the facility.

“We are not a shake shop,” said Piatek, who also serves as a 24/7 health and wellness coach. “We focus on discovering, meeting, and surpassing our customers’ health and wellness goals.”

Piatek adds, “Our location is centrally located--about 10 minutes (south) of Providence and a few minutes north of Warwick.

Most people say if someplace is located on Park Avenue, then they typically say that they know where it is.”

Another aspect of The Nutrition Station that people will find rewarding is its atmosphere.

Piatek said that its positive vibe is no accident. He said that one of the first things customers will notice when they enter is the optimistic energy coming from The Nutrition Station’s

five employees, including the co-owners. They are motivated individuals who want to see customers having a good time and finding ways to improve and better themselves. According to Piatek, “The Station also prides itself on being a communityoriented place for people to meet and socialize.”

Visitors can also enjoy one of the many healthy shakes that they offer. Piatek said that the staff is extensively knowledgeable about the products they serve and can mix a variety of flavors at the customer’s request.

“We have 24 recipes for meal replacement shakes, but we can create dozens of other drink options,” he expressed. “Our most popular drink is the Peanut Butter Oreo shake. Many people

will see someone else order this particular shake and ask about it. We also serve nine different teas with raspberry being the favorite. We add a couple of varieties of aloe sweeteners that help with the digestive track.”

“We see this as a place to bring friends and family or colleagues from work, to come and meet,” he continued. “There is a lot of positive energy that we strive to accomplish here. People want to have choices on where to eat and how to manage their lives.”

Piatek added that there are no particular demographics for their products. He said their shakes and education are appropriate for a range of any age from “grade school to the ‘young-at-heart’.

They also cater to area youth, middle school, high school, and college/university sports’ teams.

While the healthy shakes are part of The Nutrition Station allure, they accounts for only part of their business. As a health and wellness coach, Piatek said that just consuming their products is not enough. He said that they also offer classes and tips on further educating their customers on healthy living, exercise, dieting, and other physical and mental activities that will help keep them motivated.

Best of all, according to Piatek, is the chance for people to earn extra money, while maintaining

healthy living. He said the Station wants collegeaged students who are interested in learning more about the hub and the benefits of their products to inquire about prospects of becoming involved in the business. There are opportunities for people to become wellness coaches with the benefits of earning an income and helping others achieve their goals.

“We want people who work with us to know how something tastes, rather saying they think they know how the shake tastes,” Piatek said. “Our staff members are like ‘shake chefs’, where if someone comes in and requests different ingredients, the ‘chefs’ can conjure up something for them. It’s a healthy alternative to the hot dogs and donuts that could be consumed,” he adds.

While the store enjoyed a “soft opening” in July, Piatek said that The Nutrition Station plans to have its Grand Opening on Saturday, August 26, from 8am until 2pm. There will be shake specials, raffles, prizes, a disk jockey, samples, ribbon cutting, and more surprises.

I’m sure July was filled with a ton of them. I bet you’re asking yourself a lot of questions. What can I eat so as not to overindulge?

What should I bring that is healthy next time? Well, we must change our habits and make it a lifestyle change! Personally, I would bring turkey burgers to a cookout. When you arrive, choose the salad over the chips and salsa; and continue to do so out of habit.

See, there is a difference between habit and need. You do not NEED the chips and salsa.

You may want to have the salad over the chips because you’ve made this a lifestyle change, which then turns into habit.

I have been eating clean for twelve years now and everything I do is out of habit. When I say eating clean, I mean healthy, real, whole foods.

I always eat fresh and never frozen so that I can get the best possible nutrients.

The common misconception is that people must eat bland, boring foods in order to live a healthy lifestyle. This is completely untrue! I enjoy the same food as the next person; but, I prepare it in a cleaner fashion. For example, chicken parmesan can be baked instead of fried. Pasta can be brown rice pasta; and veggies do not have to be smothered in butter.

Again, this is a habit. This will gradually turn into a healthy lifestyle change and it’s something for which your future body will thank you.

So, I challenge you to change your lifestyle, change your habits, and in turn, you will change your body!

Abs / Core / Love Handles

Handles How do I How Abs/Core/Love do I get a flat stomach? get a six pack? How do I build a strong core? How do I get rid of these love handles? Sound familiar? As a trainer, these are very common questions posed Byfirst Susan Gazerro to me. The thing I tell clients is that just doing 100 sit-ups is not going to do it. If you are carrying some extra weight in your waistline, cardio, along with diet are the answer. If you just start doing sit-ups or ab workouts, you are going to build muscle, which is great, however; you may notice your abs protruding even more. The reason for this is that you didn’t the correct balance of work to lose the extra bulge. What you did was build muscle making your abs look and feel even more bloated. It’s ok! You have actually built muscle, which once you lose the fat, will give you the look and feel you want. But, if you had done the cardio and diet first, you wouldn’t feel so bloated. Make sense?

Now let’s talk facts.

An ab workout won’t do much of anything by itself. You need to mix it up if you want to blast those love handles away. Love handles are made up of fat deposits. To get rid of excess fat, a combination of cardio fitness and a healthy diet is critical. Once that fat begins to shrink, you’ll be able to see all of that hard work paying off.

Toning your obliques is the goal; but how is this achieved? First off, eat healthy every day. Choosing healthy alternatives such as fruits and vegetables instead of salty or sugar filled snacks is a great first step.

Keep track of your calories. Figure out how many calories you’re burning daily and make the correct adjustments to your diet. Remember that a decrease of 500 calories a day will add up to the loss of 1 pound by the end of the week!

Trust me; this works better than any crash, liquid, or fad diet. Those “diets” work short-term. Yes, you will lose weight because you will have shocked your body and reduced the amount of intake it is used to getting. However; 50 ShopInRI

you can’t and won’t survive like this forever. Once you go off that diet, you will gain all the weight back and then some. Slow and steady wins the race!

Add a 30-minute cardio session every other day. Go for a walk, run, dance, do some jumping jacks. Do anything to get your heart rate going. And remember, if you enjoy what you are doing, it will be easier to keep it up.

Hold a set of light weights in your hands. If you do not have weights, soup cans or water bottles will work. Squat with your feet a little past shoulder width apart. Holding the weight above your shoulder, crunch down while squeezing your oblique and bringing your elbow to the outside of quad/ thigh. Repeat 15 times on each side.

This really targets those obliques and love handles. Follow this love handle workout routine for 6 DAYS. Not only will you target those unwanted love handles, but you’ll be firming your core, as well. A strong core helps with everyday “functional” activities.

When you have a strong core, carrying shopping bags, babies, luggage, and even just standing or being on your feet all day becomes so much less of an effort.

The best way to build a strong core is to hold a plank for 30 seconds three times a day. You can do this on your forearms

or your hands. If on your hands, have hands shoulder width apart. Have your shoulders over your hands to relieve shoulder pressure, (lean your torso forward). Situate your butt slightly above hips. Do not have your butt in the air and do not arch your back so it is sinking. Again, slightly above your hips.

Hold this for 30 seconds three times a day. This is the best core strengthener.

The 7th day will be your rest day. There is such a thing as too much exercise. By taking a day to let your muscles recover, will increase the efficiency of your body’s fat burning capabilities.

Repeat this routine for Week 2.

By following these simple steps for 14 days, you will not only feel good, you will be taking a huge first step towards a healthier lifestyle. This could be the beginning of a new lifestyle-a new YOU! A you who has more confidence, more energy, and a new outlook on life.

How Can You Leave the LegacyYou Desire?

You may not see it in the greeting card section of your local drugstore, but August is “What Will Be Your Legacy Month.” So it’s a good time to think about the type of legacy you’d like to leave.

Of course, “legacy” can mean many things. In the broadest sense, your legacy is how you will be remembered by your loved ones, friends and the communities to which you belong. On a practical level, establishing your legacy means providing your family and the charitable organizations you support with the resources you’d like them to have.

And that means you may need to take the following actions: create your plans, communicate your wishes and review and update your documents.

Let’s take a quick look at all these steps:

Create your plans. You will want to work with your legal professional, and possibly your tax and financial professionals, too, to draft the plans needed to fulfill your legacy wishes. These plans may include drafting a will, living trust, health care directive, power of attorney and other documents. Ideally, you want these plans to do more than just convey where you want your money to go – you want to impart, to the next generation, a sense of the effort that went into building the wealth they receive. Without such an appreciation, your heirs may be less than rigorous in retaining the tangible legacies you’ve left them.

Communicate your wishes.

It’s important to communicate your legacy-related wishes to your family members as early as possible. By doing so, you can hopefully avoid unpleasant surprises and hurt feelings when it’s time for your estate to be settled – and you’ll also let people know what tasks, if any, they need to perform.

For example, if you’re choosing a family member to be the executor of your estate, or if you’re giving someone power of attorney over your financial or health-related matters, they should be prepared.

Update your documents. During your life, you

may well experience any number of changes – new marriage, new children, opening a family business, and so on. You need to make sure your legal documents and financial accounts reflect these changes. For example, if you’ve remarried, you may want to change the beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts – if left untouched, these designations may even supersede the instructions left in your will. And the directions in life chosen by your grown children may also dictate changes in your will or living trust. In any case, it’s a good idea to review all your legacy-related documents periodically, and update them as needed.

In addition to taking the above steps, you also need to protect the financial resources that go into your legacy.

So, when you retire and begin taking funds from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts, make sure your withdrawal rate is sufficient for your living expenses, but not so high that it eventually jeopardizes the amounts you planned to leave to your family or to your preferred charities. A financial professional can help you determine the withdrawal rate appropriate for your situation.

With careful planning, and by making the right moves, you can create the type of legacy you desire – one that can benefit your loved ones far into the future.

The Cumberland Farms Transformation

In 1938, Vasilios and Aphrodite Haseotes purchased a singlecow farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island, which eventually grew into the largest dairy farm in Southern New England. Cumberland Farms opened a dairy store in Bellingham, Massachusetts in 1958 and the first convenience store in the northeastern United States in 1962.

Cumberland Farms (“Cumbies”) is a regional chain of convenience stores based in Westborough, Massachusetts, operating primarily in New York, New England and Florida. Cumberland Farms operates roughly 600 retail stores, gas stations, and a support system including petroleum and grocery distribution operations in 11 states, including Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The company is still owned by the Haseotes family, with Lily Haseotes Bentas formerly serving as CEO and Ari Haseotes currently serving as the President and COO of Cumberland Farms, Inc. It is one of the largest retail chains to be completely privately owned. Cumberland Farms offers a large assortment of food service items, candy, snacks, and chilled drinks, which it calls “The Chill Zone”, along with Cumberland Farms branded chips, pastries, candy, coffee, and much more.

A pre-sale home inspection is cost effective in the long run. There may be many small projects and repairs that you’ve been putting off. With everything involved in getting your home ready for sale, you may decide to only complete the cosmetic list thinking the buyer may overlook the rest… think again!

A buyer will most likely schedule a home inspection, however; many times, they will accept your pre-sale home inspection rather than absorb the cost themselves. Remember, your costs to repair anything prior to sale will always be less than what is requested of you, therefore, start to attack the punch list.

The buyer will normally seek the highest bid for repair in order to “pad” the actual cost. Also, any repair not done prior to sale leaves the buyer questioning possible neglect and leave them curious if there could be other issues not taken care of. They may even question routine maintenance as well.

Remember, it is much more important to address home inspection results than cosmetics. Everyone has their own style and color choices. The condition cannot beat! will sell it, so let’s get going. of yourbehome

One of the first things that people often do when they get that new set of keys is to paint the interior of the new home prior to moving in so that the paint job is knocked out before the house is filled with their belongings. Sometimes a professional is hired; other times, people paint on their own.

Frequently, a relatively simple thing to do regarding interior trim painting is not properly done, and as a result, potential problems may often arise down the line. The interior trim on the home is many times painted with an old oil glossy paint or an acrylic product with quite the sheen to it. Most importantly, if this trim is not properly prepped, there is a good chance the top coat will not bond correctly. Perhaps you may have seen the after-effects of not properly prepping the trim?

If the trim in this particular type of situation gets nicked in any way, the small bit of peeling paint can easily shed off in sheets while fussing with it afterwards. This is often an extraordinarily frustrating situation and one that is absolutely avoidable. If the trim is prepped properly when it is painted, this problem should NEVER occur.

Prepping the trim is really simple. The existing coating should be lightly sanded, cleaned of any dust, and then primed with an alcohol-based shellac. That’s it…literally! After this, the walls are ready for the top coat (assuming any gaps/holes are filled in to your satisfaction).

Now, there are a few different ways to approach this issue. The aforementioned method happens to be the one that we typically use. It’s the LOPCO Contracting’s choice for ensuring the job is perfect. We back up our work for 5 years after the job is done; and, in every situation we are dedicated to using what we believe will maximize the lifetime of WHATEVER we are doing for the client.

While certainly not the only way to assure that your interior trim paint in the conditions described will not peel, the prescribed method is one that we can guarantee will NOT tie you to the annoyance of chasing peeling trim paint in this situation, should your door frame, window frame, or baseboard be accidentally disturbed at some point in the future!

The whimsical days of summer seemed endless.

So now with summer here, I am ready to take off into big little memories…on a bike.

My favorite summer memories pop up in technicolor. I recall the West Coast childhood days of camping in Big Sur and the Sequoia Mountains and swimming the beaches in Malibu with boogie board in tow. The avocado green VW camper stands out the most, blending well with memories of the incredible trips with beach sand on my plastic mattress in the pop-up camper. I can still taste the delicious swordfish we grilled with some lemon and dill on the hibachi and the fireroasted, slightly burned s’mores.

The roaring tides and waves of the Atlantic shoreline have swept over my practical self and nature…I fell in love last month. I fell in love with “Big Little Lies” on HBO. Here’s why…

The Big Little Lies show crept up on my earlier recollection of the West Coast years. It left a lasting impression and haunts me now. This series takes place in the gorgeous Monterey, California coastal community: powerful, cascading waves crashing, homes set on the cliffs with modern décor and pristine details. Of course, the drama is unending, the story line captivating, the soundtrack incredible, the acting pivotal. But now, how does this relate to our present existence?

This past month I was moved by the amount of discipline we all strive for or actually have to have with our schedules, obligations and deadlines.

I often find myself escaping the reality of the day-to-day and going back in time. Back when our biggest concern was the stubbed toe we got from chasing the ice cream truck.

From my day-to-day summer life, I decided I needed to reconnect with my childhood, while simultaneously carrying around the gorgeous images of Big Little Lies. I want to come

home and be in Monterey, or Barrington or Bristol, and totally relaxed, in another element. Give me my childhood pastime with an adult edge.

Because I am also infatuated with the East Bay and love Bristol, I found myself magnetically drawn to the edge of the sea off charming Thames Street--- I then popped into Pedego Bike and never looked back.

You see, as a girl back on the West Coast, I inevitably found joy in everything, including basic errands, transportation, and obligations by whisking around on my bike. My bike allowed me to experience and exercise my childhood independence. It was a Schwinn with a flowered plastic basket that held my sheets of piano music when I would pedal off to San Vincente Blvd for the weekly lesson with Mr. Pasek. To me, this bike was as perfect as could be and provided necessary transportation, exercise, fresh air and exhilaration. Free and away.

The return of these thrilling rides came about with my discovery of the electric bikes at Pedego Bikes in Bristol.

Free and away again! You see, the beauty of the electric bike is that it combines our childhood past with our modern needs by giving us a choice: to pedal or not to pedal. Using an electric bike, you can pedal for a while, and then switchover by engaging the “electric” function to easily cruise up a

steep hill or head straight into headwinds.

So - I took my middle-aged self over to Pedego, paid my 30 dollars and went biking for a couple of hours on the bike path, which is a mere hop away from the store. This popular path winds endlessly around Bristol, tightly hugging our beautiful ocean. Open air, sea, some light pedaling, and my speed effortlessly increased. The journey can then go farther and faster. Eureka!

Pet Heroes - Saving Lives

There are a number of amazing stories about how animals have saved human lives. It makes me question how anyone can say, “it’s just a dog” or “just an animal”.

These loyal creatures do not speak our language, but they are so in tune to their surroundings (sometimes more than humans) that they have the ability to sense danger before it happens. They have a keen sense of what’s happening or about to happen. If you are skeptical about this phenomenon, keep reading.

The Doberman sensed the danger and tried to nudge the toddler away, but she didn’t move. He then picked her up by her diaper and tossed her a few feet behind him.

The movement startled the snake, which lunged and bit Khan on the paw. After receiving an antivenin, the Doberman made a full recovery.

The parents were unaware of what was happening until the snake appeared and bit Khan. They soon realized that he likely saved their toddler’s life.

In October 2007, 17-month-old Charlotte Svillicic was playing in the yard of her family’s Australian home when the family dog, a Doberman pinscher named Khan, began to bark and snarl. A large snake, one of the world’s most venomous, was beneath the house.

Joe Stalnaker adopted his German shepherd, Buddy, when the pup was only 8 weeks old. He taught him to retrieve the phone when he started to experience seizure symptoms.

As a result, if Joe should black out or become unable to make a call, Buddy has been trained to use his

teeth to hit a speed-dial button that contacts 911. In 2008, the 18-monthold dog called the emergency line and began whimpering into the phone.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene a few minutes later and found Joe unconscious. After rushing him to the hospital and spending a couple of days there, he did recover. Buddy became Joe’s independence. He is Joe’s best friend and is always there for him.

Buddy is the most loyal companion in the world to Joe. “I just hope I can be as good to him as he’s been to me,” quoted Joe. Buddy isn’t the first dog to dial 911 for help. In 1996, an Irish setter placed a 911 call when her owner’s breathing machine disconnected; and in 2004, a Rottweiler not only placed a call when her owner fell out of her wheelchair, but also opened the door for police officers.

Can you still say “just a dog”?

How about the fact that a parrot saved a life? Yes, Will the parrot saved a 2-year-old named Hannah Kuusk from choking. Meghan, Hannah’s babysitter, said that while she was in another room, Willie started screaming like she had never heard him scream; and, he started flapping his wings. Meghan recalled, “Then he started saying ‘mama baby’ over and over again until I came in and looked at Hannah and her face was turning blue.”

Meghan then performed the Heimlich maneuver to save the little girl; but she says that Willie is the real hero.

The bird was later presented with the local Red Cross Chapter’s Animal Lifesaver Award.

When a gas-powered water pump began leaking carbon monoxide, an odorless gas that a human cannot detect, into the Keesling home, their cat, Winnie, began nudging her sleeping owners and started piercingly meowing. It was such a crazy meow, a screaming meow that they have never heard her make. When Cathy, the homeowner, woke up, she was already dizzy and nauseated from the poisonous gas and her husband and son were unconscious.

Thanks to Winnie, Cathy was able to call 911 and get help before anyone was seriously harmed.

When Ben Heinrich’s workshop caught fire in 2010, he shouted at his German shepherd, Buddy, that he needed help and the dog took off into the woods. Buddy ran to a nearby road where he actually found a state trooper and then led him to the site of the fire. The state trooper then directed the fire department to the scene, where firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control just as it was about to spread to Heinrich’s home. As a result, Buddy received a silver-plated bowl from the Alaska State Troopers for his heroism; but Heinrich said

that it wasn’t the first time Buddy showed his bravery.

The dog, raised by Heinrich since he was 6 weeks old, has twice chased bears away while Heinrich was fishing.

Truly amazing!

In January 2009, 10-year-old Maxim Kurguzov was playing outside his home in Russia, when a fox wandered into the yard, killed one of the family chickens and then turned on the boy. Shrek, the family dog, leapt in front of Maxim and fought off the fox with several bites to the head. Upon hearing the commotion, Maxim’s father, Alexey, grabbed his son and began snapping photos of his fearless dog, who engaged in a 25-minute standoff with the fox.

Roberta Trawick was sitting on her couch in her Oklahoma City home in 2009, when an armed intruder busted through her front door and demanded that she get on the ground. Her 2-year-old pit bull, D-Boy, came charging into the room while the intruder fired multiple times, hitting D-Boy three times, including two shots to the head. Nevertheless, the dog continued to chase after him. The intruder, apparently spooked, finally fled. “That dog saved my life and lives of my family,” said Trawick.

“Without D-Boy, that guy may have shot me and my family.’’ The Trawicks had rescued the pit bull from an abusive home just three months before the break-in; and here he was just three months later putting his life in harm’s way to save the family that saved him.

These pets, along with many others, are true heroes. They not only love unconditionally; they are extremely loyal and wouldn’t think twice about risking their life to save yours. And for those who dare to say “just a dog” or “just an animal”, shame on you-“just a human”.

SAFETY PARTNERS American Red Cross, EPFD, Keller Williams Realty, Leading Edge help keep local residents safe during “Home Fire Preparedness Campaign” By: Mark Berger EAST PROVIDENCE—Thousands of lives are lost annually because homes or other places of residence either lack adequate fire alarm systems or use outdated ones.

Several local organizations recently aligned to ensure families stay safe.

Volunteers from The American Red Cross, Rhode Island Chapter, the East Providence Fire Department (EPFD), and Keller Williams Realty, Leading Edge toured the city installing new smoke alarms and educating residents on having an escape plan, how to ensure proper ventilation, and other tactics that may prevent danger.

Elizabeth McDonald, Senior Director of Emergency Services said the group performed 137 installations during its recent campaign. She said that this effort is part of a national effort to prevent fire-related deaths. So far, 235 lives were saved since the start of the campaign, with efforts to decrease the number of residential fire deaths by 5% over the next five years.

“The American Red Cross responds to home fires and other disasters, nearly 64,000 a year,” said McDonald, who has worked for The American Red Cross for 25 years. “In these situations, we deal with the families after the fire—trying to

take care of their immediate emergency needs and help families get back on their feet. The faster fires are detected, the less damage that occurs, and the more time that people have to get out. Smoke alarms save lives!”

efforts, spoke with the teams before they went about the installation process and provided education pointers. The program took roughly 20 minutes at each stop. Keller William Realty, Leading Edge Volunteer Tom Keith of Cranston and Red Cross Volunteer Bob Foti (Rumford), were among the teams that installed the new fire alarm systems, which numbered up to three new devices in each residence. The agency has offices in Cumberland and East Providence.

Trainer said that programs such as the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign work for two reasons. The first helps keep the city safe in the event of a fire. Second, it provides the EPFD with a chance to be more involved with the community and provides residents with answers to their questions or concerns. He said having programs regarding this is not only important for the public to take advantage of, but also for the Department to be proactive within the city. “The majority of fires that we see often happen because of an accident,” said Trainer. “Many of them could have been prevented with a working smoke system.

Many people do not realize that the older alarms fail after five years if they do not replace the battery. The newer models last 10 years, and there is no battery to replace.”

Paul W. Cutler of Keller Williams Realty, Leading Edge, and a Burrillville resident, said the opportunity to help came by chance. Cutler said he met McDonald at an open house and they got to talking. When MacDonald said they were holding this event, Cutler said that fit in with the Realty’s RED Day Initiative, when the agency closes its doors for one day to get involved in the community. Cutler’s colleague, Stephen Thibodeau, said the agency worked on several projects including building homes for Habitat for Humanity, as one example. He said it was a simple choice to sign on for this project.

We have been doing RED Day since I began working here 12 years ago,” said Thibodeau, who works in the East Side as the Operating Principal. “This program fits in with our culture and community partnership mission.”

Summer 2017 Movie Reviews By Hannah Burke

With the arrival of summer, the abundance of summer blockbusters has grown. The anticipated reveal of Cars 3 has been on the minds of many since the first trailer debut. Now, it’s on the big screen.

Cars 3 tells the story of Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as his racing days are sadly coming to a close. The new overtaking of enhanced race cars like Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) takes over the playing field, forcing the veterans to retire, and leaving McQueen to fight for the title of Piston Cup. His sponsorship is turned over to a new and improved company, where he trains with the latest technology. He also trains with Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), a sports car desperate to get on the racing track.

Overall, I thought the movie was good; but it wasn’t great. I thought the ending deflated the movie, considering how much of it was dedicated to McQueen becoming a better race car to beat Jackson Storm. The ending was almost the same as the previous two movies. It felt like the only good parts of the movie worth watching were the first 20 or so minutes, and everything else was just an hour of Rocky montages, to an ending that didn’t summarize enough. Will there be a Cars 4? Because if so, the ending would make more sense. Is the series over? Because it was a pretty uneventful ending. I give Cars 3 a 2.5 out of 6 diamonds. Rated G. It’s been four years since we’ve seen Gru and his minions, but he’s back with a new movie, Despicable Me 3. Despicable Me 3 tells the story of Gru (Steve Carell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) as they attempt to take down the infamous villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), an actor who played a villain as a child and eventually grew so attached to the character, he actually became him to seek revenge on Hollywood. However, during this time, Gru learns of his twin brother Dru (Steve Carell), who was separated from him at birth. Gru also learns that his father was actually one of the greatest supervillains to ever live, and Dru attempts to convince him to rejoin the life of crime. It is an extremely hard decision for him, to choose between his wife Lucy, and their three girls, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Nev Scharrel), and his supervillain blood.

Overall, I really liked the movie. It had everything that a cheesy 80 ShopInRI

movie like Despicable Me would have. There was a great family dynamic, as well as amazing action, daring twists and suspense.

Of course, there were the Minions providing classic comedy relief.

However, I felt that there could have been more. The movie was mostly focused around Gru’s return to villainy, but I felt it was too short-lived, as only about 40 out of the 90 minutes was spent on his villain side, only for him to quickly change back to the good side. I also felt like it could have gone for longer, as it was only 90 minutes, whereas the second was 98 minutes, and the first was 95 minutes. I give Despicable Me 3 3.5 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG for violence.

After the not well liked Spiderman and The Amazing Spiderman movies, Marvel has finally premiered the highly anticipated Spiderman: Homecoming. Almost everyone knows about how Spiderman came to be, but Spiderman: Homecoming takes his story to a new turn. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is a boy living in Queens with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), but little does she know that at night he patrols the city of New York as Spiderman. During the day, he goes to Midtown High School with his friends, Ned ( Jacob Batalon), Michelle (Zendaya), and his crush, Liz (Laura Harrier). However, one night Ned learns that he is Spiderman, and aids him in his adventures. He quit the decathlon team in order to stay in New York for Tony (Robert Downey Jr.). However, the viewers can see how Peter is too eager to prove himself to Tony. He eventually goes to D.C. on the decathalon trip and saves his friends’ lives.

The movie shows Peter’s struggles as he deals with being Spiderman, school issues, his crush, keeping his identity a secret, and fighting the Vulture (Michael Keaton), an illegal weapons dealer who is using alien technology to earn money.

I thought Spiderman: Homecoming was amazing, blowing the other movies out of the water. At the end of Civil War, I was horribly disappointed that the end-credits scene was for Spiderman, but grew more excited as the movie’s debut came closer. It had an amazing realistic element of Peter’s overexcitement, as well as depression, and the always present Spiderman determination. Tony Stark was a great add-on to the movie, because he was portrayed as an almost fatherly mentor figure to Peter throughout the film. I thought it was important because Tony just wanted Peter to be better than him. I give Spiderman: Homecoming a 6 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG13 for violence.

Downtown Sundown Series & The Providence Folk Festival By: Jenn Lombari

Live folk music on a summer day is just as much of a summer time expectation in Rhode Island as is seafood. With several different folk festivals stretching across RI and local Massachusetts, and varying in styles, there is always live music for everyone to enjoy.

The Downtown Sundown series is a mix of talks, tours, and music, and theatre that spans from May to the end of August on ThursdaySunday evenings. The concerts take place on the lawn at The Roger Williams National Memorial, situated between Capitol Hill and the East Side of Providence.

There is always ample free parking. As part of that series, every other Saturday night there is a Sundown Concert featuring three or four folk performers for the public to enjoy. Music lovers are encouraged to bring a blanket 84 ShopInRI or a lawn chair, and maybe even a ShopInRI 84 8484ShopInRI ShopInRI

picnic basket, to relax and enjoy the entertainment. Well behaved, leashed dogs are also invited.

At the end of the summer, and after the Sundown Concerts have taken place, there will be a day long concert known as The Providence Folk Festival.

So how did all of this start and who is to thank for making this FREE annual event possible?

John Fuzek is no stranger to the folk music scene in Rhode Island.

He’s been performing solos as well as in various folk and singer songwriter groups for decades, including his Neil Young tribute, Forever Young. When he’s not working on his own music, he’s helping provide an outlet for other musicians to be seen and heard by audiences throughout Rhode Island.

Fuzek had been running a singer

songwriter stage at the famous Newport Folk Festival for several years. The stage was at the entrance gates where performers could play for a captive audience while they waited to enter the festival. Many people in the folk scene, fans and performers alike, got to know Fuzek this way. He became known for producing a great show. He was also involved in the Hear In Rhode Island organization which also happened to have a festival that was held at Roger Williams Park. Hear In Rhode Island was an offshoot of the Rhode Island Songwriter’s Association. This festival grew to 100 acts with four stages, and was held at The Temple Of Music. So, Fuzek knows the work that goes into a festival of any size and has a reputation for doing it right.

Around the time of Providence’s 375th Birthday, Ranger John

McNiff and The Roger Williams National Memorial Park offered Fuzek a grant to produce a celebratory project.

This involvement with the park led to the Downtown Sundown Series and the Providence Folk Festival. With major support from Roger Williams National Memorial, and the generous donations from local sponsors, these two events have been growing since 2010. The festival has two stages and Fuzek hopes to eventually top out at three. The first year of the festival, Fuzek actually built the stage himself, using donated supplies.

For Fuzek, it’s a labor of love and dedication. Every Downtown Sundown Series Concert is bringing in 100200 people each time and last year there were about 750 in attendance at the Providence Folk Festival.

The performers range from traditional folk, bluegrass, Celtic, Americana, singer songwriter, and small ensembles, showcasing the sounds of guitars, mandolins, standup bass, and other traditional instruments. Past performers have included Robin Lane, Jen Chapin (Harry Chapin’s daughter), The Neilds, Cliff Eberhardt, Bob Kendall, Andy Pratt, Allysen Callery, Jo die Treloar Sampson, Mary Day and many more.
