Inevitable but still unwelcome: The US Geological Society says the average daily water level of Great Salt Lake in Utah has dropped to a historic low. The agency tweeted that it recorded a level of 4,191.3 feet above sea level, eclipsing the previous low set in 1964, per the Salt Lake Tribune. Don’t expect the record to stand very long, because the lake typically drops through August and September before rebounding in October. “The new historic low is going to be set this autumn,” says Ryan Rowland of the USGS. While lake levels have been trending lower for years, this year’s drought in Utah delivered the decisive blow in regard to the unwanted record. Snow melt in the spring usually raises the lake level 2 feet. This year? 6 inches.

his father had done. The 13-year-old Florida boy had been captivated by some of the finds his dad uncovered as a commercial diver, including a 300-year-old shipwreck he discovered in the Black Sea in 2019. The father and son set out on a dive trip at St. Andrews State Park near Panama City Beach. Sebastian had only been diving for about six months, which is how long it took him to find treasure. “In the corner of my eye, I see something shine,” he said. He noticed a leather strap, and spent about 10 minutes trying to wrench the object from the sand. Turns out it was a leg—a prosthetic one worth about $9,000. But the story doesn’t end there. Sebastian managed to find the man who lost it.

That would be Sergeant Carter Hess, who lost much of his right leg below the knee while in Afghanistan in 2012. A Washington Nationals away game in San Francisco could have ended in tragedy were it not for starting pitcher Joe Ross’ doctor dad. While watching his son play the Giants at Oracle Park, Dr. Willie Ross noticed a woman near him in the stands who appeared to be in distress. Dr. Ross, a pediatrician at Stanford Hospital, told the Mercury News, the woman first seemed to signal to a companion that she was okay. When he realized she wasn’t, he approached her and employed the Heimlich maneuver. Two pieces of hot dog were dislodged. However, the woman still seemed distressed. Dr. Ross 6 Shop In RI

The victim, described as an embarrassed but thankful 53-year-old retired nurse, then appeared to recover. Per Sports Illustrated, the doctor shook hands with members of a cheering crowd. Meanwhile, if it seems like Ross kept a cool head, it may be because he’s reportedly done this before--and not just in a hospital setting. San Francisco Chronicle baseball reporter Susan Slusser tweeted following the incident that Ross once saved a stroke victim at a California amateur league field.

both extreme athletes and hamsters alike, but Reza Baluchi’s recent bid to “run” from Florida to New York has come to a frustrating and anticlimactic end. The Flagler County Sheriff ’s Office reported that the 49-year-old washed ashore a beach in St. Augustine, Fla., 30 miles south of where he’d set off the day before in a contraption he calls a “hydropod,” in his quest to make it 1,000 miles north to the Empire State. However, Baluchi “came across some complications” that truncated his journey, the sheriff ’s department noted. The Guardian calls Baluchi’s “strange vessel,” a “barreltype” structure that appears to be held up by flotation devices. The Coast Guard “arrived on scene to take over the case and ensure the vessel/occupant were safe. Baluchi tried to use his hydropod to get from Florida to Bermuda, both in 2016 and in 2014. The Coast Guard had to rescue him both times.

COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons, Learnings and Reflections… By Dale J. Venturini, President/CEO, Rhode Island Hospitality Association

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues across the globe, cases appear to be dropping in the United States and in other countries, where vaccination rates are rising. As we begin to see a light at the end of the tunnel and approach a hopeful end to this public health crisis in our country, it seems to be a good time to reflect on the lessons that we have all learned over the course of the last year-and-a-half. For our industry, some of those lessons were learned the hard way, as restrictions and public health guidelines altered the way we had traditionally done business and forced our hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality businesses to adapt in an effort to survive – unfortunately, some were not able to pivot, and as a result, doors were shuttered, jobs were lost, and lives changed forever. While hospitality continues to recover across the country, including in Rhode Island, some of the practices and operational procedures that were implemented during the pandemic will prove to be

useful going into the future. Challenges such as the temporary shutdown of indoor dining, capacity limits, and the enforcement of physical distancing were met with thoughtful, innovative practices that not only helped some businesses remain viable during the pandemic, but that also have the ability to contribute to the success of our industry going forward. From a consumer convenience standpoint, many great ideas have increased the profitability of businesses during the pandemic, from the allowance of alcohol to-go, to the increased prevalence of curbside takeout and delivery options, improved online ordering and reservation systems, to the implementation of contactless services, and more. To appeal to the average consumer’s desire for an easy, convenient experience, whether dining at a restaurant, ordering takeout, or staying at a hotel, meeting our guests where they are (and where they are comfortable), will continue to be of great importance, as we come out of the pandemic and as society adapts to a new way of life. The biggest challenge currently facing the industry is the workforce shortage. Throughout the pandemic, we have learned that safety is a top priority for our employees. By continuing to utilize the best sanitary and safety measures in our establishments, we can reassure prospective and existing industry workers that they are as safe with us as they are anywhere else. Many industry workers also sought to hone their skills and improve their professional acumen throughout the pandemic and so offering our employees opportunities for advancement and providing the resources necessary for an effective training experience will appeal to those individuals who are committed to a career in hospitality. The workforce is the backbone of the hospitality industry and so if there is even one lesson to be learned from this disconcerting trend, it is that we are obligated to ensure that employment in our industry is safe, worthwhile, and rewarding. While things are looking up, and I certainly do not want to be an alarmist, there is no telling where we will be at this time next year. It is my hope that conditions continue to improve, our industry recovers to the best of its ability, and our country returns to its pre-pandemic sense of normalcy. However, we cannot let our guard down; I urge our industry not to forget the lessons learned during the pandemic – they may be our lifeline should anything like this ever happen again.

HOW MUCH EXERCISE DO WE REALLY NEED?

By Susan Gazerro

By Susan Gazerro Every time we turn around, there’s different advice when it comes to exercise, health, and nutrition. Whether you want to run a certain number of miles, get into strength training, lose weight, or just feel healthy, there’s so much conflicting information that even answering a simple question like, “how often should I work out?” can feel impossible to answer. Every fitness pro will give you a different answer as to how much cardio, weight training, or resistance training you should do.

is just trying to maintain their weight and stay healthy.

If you’re working out to feel good, don’t worry too much about how much cardio versus strength training you do in a given week. A pretty general rule for most people is a 50-50 training split and is a great place to start. That means that if you work out four days a week, you’d do two days of strength training and two days of cardio.

What I mean is those who maintain their healthy weight do extra physical activity than those who don’t. They park further away from an entrance to a store. They walk their dog more than twice a day. They take a walk at lunchtime. They walk before or after work. They make it a point to move when they don’t have to. They burn more calories throughout the day and expend more energy, overall. Most of the time, it’s not the exercise you are not doing, it’s the overeating you are doing. Exercise certainly helps with weight loss, however, it’s how much you are eating that is the main contributor to being overweight. I, as a fitness instructor, firmly believe in exercise, but the exercise is not just about weight loss, it’s mainly to maintain a healthy life, and it’s the only thing that works the most important

If you are looking to lose weight, what I refer to as “healthy weight loss” is best achieved through a combo of exercise and nutritional changes. I do not mean “diet.” I don’t believe in diets. I truly believe in a lifestyle change. This change comes with how you become more active and start eating clean or healthier. If you are looking to lose weight, your exercise schedule will look very different from one who 30 Shop In RI

For weight loss, you should be working out a minimum of four days a week. Longlasting weight loss or what I like to call your healthy weight has no end. You want to be able to maintain a lifestyle and it has to be a priority to keep your results. Another crucial factor for weight loss is being more active, in general. I’m not just referring to your exercise workouts.

muscle in your body, your heart. When you do cardio exercise, you are burning fat for the period of that workout. When you do resistance training or weight training, you are activating muscle and this continues to burn fat long after the session is over. Now, on the contrary, if you are someone who wants to gain weight or build muscle, I recommend three or four workouts per week. If this is your goal, here’s the approach you should take regarding cardio. I would suggest scaling back on the cardio. The cardio should follow the strength training and be low endurance. This also doesn’t have to be after every weight training session. Again, cardio is the only thing that works the heart muscle, however; when you weight train, you are raising your heart rate and doing more than people that just do “cardio” so keep your cardio to a minimum. Remember, building muscle requires striking a fine balance between work and rest. You want to avoid both overtraining and under-training muscles. But if your goal is gaining muscle, be sure to rest a day or two during the week. Truth is, even if your goal is weight loss and you are going cardio crazy, you should take a day or two to rest. Being a hypocrite, I must admit that I don’t always take a day off. I have to put this in the article because my clients and friends know this about me. I believe your body will tell you when you need to rest, and every once in a while, my body does tell me so that’s when I take a rest. Everyone is different. How often you work out depends on a lot of things. Your lifestyle, your fitness level, and your individual goals will determine how often you need a “break.” Ultimately, balancing work and recovery is so important whether you’re working out for overall health, weight loss, or building muscle. Bottom line is that exercise is so important to your overall health and that is what I will preach and believe until the day I die.

“Exercise is a celebration for what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate.” Shop In RI 31

Style Profile A day in the life

Jamie Coelho

Senior editor at Rhode Island Monthly magazine By Desi Baker Jamie Coelho is a senior editor at Rhode Island Monthly magazine, where she writes about food and drink, art, fashion, business, and other lifestyle topics in the Ocean State. She has also been published in the Boston Globe Magazine and Yankee magazine and appeared on “The Rhode Show,” Rhode Island PBS, and “Weekends with Yankee.” Jamie Coelho is mom of two young kids and a cheerleader for local small businesses in Rhode Island. She makes it her mission to promote shops, restaurants, people, and events on her social media channels. Read about a day in the life of an editor who is one of the biggest movers and shakers in Rhode Island.

5:45 a.m. My alarm goes off. I set three alarms every five minutes in case I sleep through the first. I eventually get out of bed at 6 a.m.

6 a.m. I prepare for my day and head into the office. I brew coffee, put the final touches on my kids’ lunches for school and camp, then head out the door. My kids are still sleeping when I leave the house and my husband gets them ready for the day. 7 a.m. I drive to the Rhode Island Monthly offices in Pawtucket and start my day as one of the first staff members in the office. I work earlier hours so I can get my son off the bus or pick him up from camp, and pick my daughter up from pre-school in the afternoon. 7:30 a.m. I usually start my day eating breakfast at work, while reading other news outlets and perusing social media so I can stay up to date on restaurant and business happenings in the Ocean State. 8 a.m. I kick my morning off by posting any blogs that need to go up for the day, compiling an email newsletter, or transcribing notes from previous interviews for stories in the magazine. 9 a.m. Our interns usually arrive around this time so I will check in with them for the day, assign stories, and go over any edits on previous work.

10 a.m. I usually schedule my own phone interviews or in-person visits with profile and story subjects after 10 a.m., since that is the “sweet spot” when people usually have had their coffee and are more alert to respond to my questions.

11 a.m.-1 p.m. I spend the majority of my day writing articles for the magazine and daily blog.

1 p.m. I’ll break for lunch, often bringing my own home-cooked meal or I’ll order takeout through a food truck or restaurant for pickup. Our building, located in the Lorraine Mills, has several options including Ja Patty Jamaican cuisine and the Miss Lorraine Diner. Sometimes I will take a walk to grab coffee to get up from my desk.

1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. I spend the rest of the day writing features, assigning stories to freelance writers, and brainstorming restaurant package ideas. 3:30 p.m. Fly home to get my son off the bus and pick up my daughter from school. 34 Shop In RI

Myke Yeager Photography 4 p.m. We’re back home for a hot second, when I try to squeeze in a quick home workout on the Peloton app, or take my son out on his electric scooter and push my running stroller with my daughter placed in it to get in some exercise. Sometimes we just play in the yard.

5 p.m. I pull something easy together for dinner for the family, such as a rotisserie chicken with rice or pasta and veggies, and I try really hard to make my kids eat whatever I make. Oftentimes, I cook big meals in advance like chili, stuffed peppers, or chicken chow mein so we have something to eat for several nights. My husband doesn’t get home from work until later in the evening so I’ll leave food for him in the fridge.

5:30-7 p.m. My son is on a local Little League team so I take him to play ball with his team, three days a week. If it’s not baseball, then it’s a Cub Scouts meeting, or a dance class for my daughter. I’m running around with the kids almost every evening!

7:30 p.m. The game or kids’ activity is over and I return home and get ready quickly to head out to a local restaurant, hot new bar, or event. I try to go out only on nights when the kids don’t have activities, but sometimes I do both. I will hire a babysitter to put the kids to bed or stay with them until my husband gets home. I go out on the town and I will meet up with a friend to check out a new spot, but on Fridays or Saturdays, my husband and I will sometimes have a date night and check out more spots that I will write about.

10:30 p.m. Now that I’m home, I have to prepare for the next day, which involves making weekday lunches again for my kids. I often find myself doing this (and washing dishes!) at 10:30 or 11 at night.

11 p.m. I shower and try to unwind with a book, magazine, or Netflix show (or let’s be honest, fold laundry) so I can have some quiet time before bed.

11:30 p.m. Lights out and do it all over again the next day. Always with a smile! Find out more about Jamie Coelho at Instagram.com/jamiecoelho.

CAPITALIZING ON EMPLOYEE STOCK OPTIONS By: Edward Pontarelli

A key component of compensation for many individuals who work for privately-held or public companies is the opportunity to own company stock. This is often made available through an employee ownership plan. If your employer provides you with this benefit, it’s important to understand how the employee stock options (ESO) work, and the most effective ways to take advantage of them. The opportunity to own shares in the firm you work for can, at times, be extremely valuable. In other circumstances, the actual financial benefit may turn out to be limited. Much depends on the level of success the company enjoys. One of the most appealing aspects of stock options is that it gives you a greater stake in the potential success of the company. PRICES AND DATES TO KNOW

Before you make any decisions about how to take advantage of stock options, you need to understand the price you will pay for shares of company stock and the timing of those purchases. This is key to determining the ultimate benefit the ESO plan may have to offer. Here are some of the critical terms to understand: STRIKE PRICE (also known as grant price or exercise price) – this is the price you will pay to purchase shares of stock utilizing the option. The price and number of shares available to you is specified at the time the company grants the option. MARKET PRICE – the current value of a share of stock.

This is important to know at the time you intend to exercise your option to buy company shares.

VESTING DATE – after receiving the option, you may have

to wait for a specified time period before you can exercise it. When the vesting date passes, you may choose to purchase the stock at the strike price. EXPIRATION DATE – once the option is fully vested, you may choose to purchase the stock at any time before the expiration date. TIMING MATTERS

The real benefit of holding stock options is the discount you receive on purchasing company stock. This happens when your company’s market share price has risen significantly above the strike price specified in your option. You can derive a meaningful financial benefit as soon as you purchase shares – a concept often referred to as the option being “in the money.” If the market value of the stock stays below the strike price by the time you reach the expiration date, you may want to let the option expire. In this instance, you could consider purchasing company shares on the open market at the market price. Once the vesting date is reached, you can purchase shares in several ways. You can pay cash for the actual shares or you can swap shares of the stock that you already own to cover the purchase cost at the strike price. If you purchase shares, they become part of your portfolio and your overall financial strategy. As you exercise your stock options, it’s important to make sure you do so with your overall risk tolerance in mind. Holding too much of a single stock in your portfolio increases your exposure to risk, and is a possibility if you accumulate significant shares of company stock over time. Review your options with a financial professional who can help you capitalize on the benefits of having an ownership stake in your employer’s firm while maintaining a well-diversified portfolio. Have Questions About Disability Income Insurance? Here Are Some Answers. By: Carrie McPherson

Q: What financial support would I receive from a disability income policy I purchase?

An often overlooked but key area of your overall protection strategy is the need to protect your income stream if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Think about the financial impact if you were unable to earn a paycheck for an extended period.

A: Disability income insurance will typically pay in the range of 60 percent of your income, depending on how your policy is structured. Premiums are paid with aftertax dollars, so the benefits will not be taxable. On an aftertax basis, the disability income benefit should come very close to matching your regular income from work.

Disability income insurance is designed to protect against that risk but is a type of insurance many aren’t familiar with. Here are answers to many questions we frequently hear from clients:

Q: Will a disability income insurance policy protect me if I can’t work in my specific field or if I can’t work at all?

Q: What is the chance I might be subject to a disability-related event?

A: It may be more likely than you think. It is estimated that more than one in four of today’s 20-year-olds will miss at least of year of work because of a disabling condition before they reach retirement age. 1 Q: What if I don’t work in a high-risk occupation?

A: The fact is that injuries can happen anywhere, not just on the job. An injury could result from a car accident, a bad fall, a mishap working around the yard or even a sport. Then, there are more debilitating illnesses. COVID-19 reminded us all of our vulnerability and that some illnesses have debilitating effects for an extended period. Q: What can disability income insurance do for me?

A: Disability income insurance provides a source of monthly income to replace what is lost if you are unable to work. This is important to help pay for your household expenses on an ongoing basis. Funds can also help you keep pace with savings for monumental goals in your life such as retirement or your child’s college education. Q: Do I really need disability income insurance? What about the financial support from my occupation or the Social Security disability program?

A: Employer-provided policies, if offered, often pay the equivalent of about half your salary, but these benefits are generally subject to income tax, leaving you with a gap to bridge to meet your needs. Social Security benefits are not always easy to qualify for, may take months before payments are approved and often pay only a modest amount (the average monthly benefit is $1,2341). These two options leave large gaps for most people.

A: This depends on the type of policy you choose. With an “own occupation” policy, you can collect benefits if you are unable to work at your regular occupation. With an “any occupation” policy, you are only eligible to collect benefits if you can’t work at all. Q: How soon do benefits begin?

A: This also depends on how your policy is structured. Policies come with an elimination period, ranging from 30 days to 180 days. This is similar to a deductible on your auto insurance. For example, if you have a 60-day elimination period, you won’t receive benefits for the first two months you are disabled. A longer elimination period will lower the cost of your policy but widen the income gap you will need to be prepared to fill. Learn more today. Disability income insurance should be included in a review of your overall protection needs. Consider talking to your financial advisor or insurance

specialist about what it can do for you.

Ron Giorgio Rhode Island’s youngest tribute artist Evoking the classic style of the 50s, 60s & 70s “Sinatra didn’t get his big break ‘til he was 24 so I’ve got three years!” By L.A. Reilly I was asked to interview local vocalist Ron Giorgio and after researching Ron on Facebook, @RonGiorgio Entertainment, I was really interested how a 21 year old starting singing Sinatra. Ron has been called one of the most talented entertainers of the circuit singing the hits of Sinatra and Dean Martin to Doo-Wop and teen idols Bobby Vinton and Frankie Avalon. He has been called a “Crooner”, I’ve heard the term used before but wasn’t exactly sure what it was. From Wiki, “Crooner…. a term used to describe primarily male singers who perform using a smooth style made possible by microphones which picked up quieter sounds and a wide range of frequencies, allowing the singer to utilize more dynamic range and perform in a more intimate manner. To croon, speak softly was suggested to drive the teen girls crazy. The crooning style was epitomized by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.” I met Ron at Maria’s Cucina on Broadway in Providence to watch him perform. It was my first time at Maria’s and I immediately loved it, it felt like I was in Italy with the décor and friendly atmosphere and the banter at the bar about the Godfather movies. Perfect place to interview Ron. Ron was introduced to music at the young age of 3.

His maternal grandmother loved Elvis and he used to sing Elvis around the house. Songs like “Teddy Bear” That’s how he started getting into music with his grandmother playing the records. “So I got into Elvis. That was a big thing for me for years as a kid. I use to sing at family parties.” Ron said. His grandmother passed away when Ron was 11 and he stopped listening to Elvis because it was too difficult for him and then “got into Sinatra. I don’t remember exactly why. I got a record player for Christmas one year and the first record I ever got was from my paternal grandparents. The record was “Come Dance with Me” by Sinatra. I loved the album which is how I got into Sinatra at 11 years old.” He said. He exposed a lot of his friends to this music growing up. Growing up he listened to Elvis, the Beatles and Michael Jackson. When Ron was in middle school they had a talent show and he was encouraged by his family and friends to perform. He wasn’t really interested but did it anyway. He performed “The Way you Look Tonight” by Sinatra which was the first time he ever sang in public in front of a lot of people. About a month later he got a call from the Valley Breeze and they wanted to interview him. They did a cover story on 12 year old Ron. They had seen him perform at the talent show. “I thought it was a joke. I was a little kid. They did a story on me and that really started people calling and wanting me to sing at events.” he said. Then high school came and he stopped performing until he met his best friend and who he calls his manager Anthony “Nappy” Napolitano, former president of the Italo-American Club in Providence. He knew Anthony his whole life and he grew up on the Hill with Ron’s Grandfather. But at 16 he started singing at Anthony’s godsons place “Anthony’s Authentic Italian Cuisine”. It was Ron’s first gig singing there every Thursday night. ”Nappy” got him into Anthony’s and the Italo-American club where Ron is the youngest member. That’s how he went from singing at home to singing out. Ron loves Doo Wop, The Duprees is his favorite. He is also the lead singer in a Doo Wop group called “Classic Blend” and with his band he does a couple shows a month..

Ron also enjoys singing with live bands. “I’m at my best with a live band. I feel it more and it’s such a great environment.” When he first started he played with some local orchestra bands. In 2017 Ron performed a Doo Wop and swing show at the Venus De Milo where he sang Sinatra songs as a featured vocalist. Although he doesn’t come from a musical family, Ron said “My grandfather, Ronnie Giorgio, grew up on Federal Hill and in those days the Italians were big into music. He was definitely a great singer and still is. In his teen years he had a group and would sing on the corner of Federal Hill. His group was called ‘The Dreams’ and it was a street corner group. So I guess I got it from him”. His favorite musician of all time? Yup, Sinatra. “The Italians have two pictures on their walls, one of the pope and one of Sinatra and the Sinatra picture is a little higher”, he joked. As for the future…Ron would love to put out an album but just hasn’t had the time but “If ever there was a record company that wanted to take me on” he would definitely take the chance, but for now he is going to keep doing this and hope more opportunities come along. “As a kid working in the restaurants I would watch singers perform and thought to myself that I would love to someday have a band. And now I’m doing it! I’m getting to do something I always wanted to do” and he says this has opened so many doors for him. He sang the last event that was at the Superman Building, which “was a fashion show and I sang before the show. It was amazing. I’m in the Superman building , in the lobby, and it was the last time anyone was in the building” he exclaimed. For Ron, it’s always different, always new and always exciting. “I can’t sit still so it’s perfect for me” Every other Wednesday Ron performs at Tavolo Wine Bar & Tuscan Grille on Atwells. Every Thursday night at Maria’s Cucina. Every so often is at Anthony’s Restaurant on a Friday. Sometimes at The George on a Saturday. When I asked him if he was busy this week…”I’ll tell ya what, this week, starting today I will be singing every single night for the next two weeks. It’s a little more difficult than people think it is. Lot’s of balancing it all out. Here I am, I’m 21. I’m singing music that kids my age just don’t sing and I’m probably one of the youngest performers in RI to do this kind of music. “ He said the proudest things in his life is his singing and being an Italian American. “My heritage is probably one of the biggest things for me.”

Anthony “Nappy” Napolitano & Ron Giorgio

After the interview I watched Ron perform for the first time. The crowd loved him and I could understand what it was like listening to a “Crooner”. He even dedicated a song to me. Yes, Ron knows how to work the crowd and I didn’t want to leave.

Investing in the Arts Hollis Machala of Machalarts Watercolor Studio paints vivid pictures of life. By Mark Berger

Much has been made of the arts and how it may be fading away. With less disposable income because of the global pandemic, people are more discernible when it comes to disposable spending. Plus, there is a wide array of what constitutes art. What someone deems as art-worthy, someone else may believe is worthless. Enter Hollis Machala, owner of Machalarts Watercolor Studio, who works with clients on creating the best watercolor paintings. She recently began her art studio work full-time in nearby Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Machala paints from the heart. Her goal in painting is creating a stunning visual that speaks to the person buying the piece. There are many ways to view something, but having that work say something positive can make it stronger. “When I paint something, whether it’s a commissioned piece or painting for my own collections, I want to make it so it becomes a conversation starter,” she said. “Once a piece leaves the studio, my hope is that the purchaser will look at it fondly and give a backstory on how it got to that point. This is something that may end up hanging on a wall in an office or living room. It should be a source of pride.” One area of good news is the increasing number of exhibits opening. Since the pandemic basically shut down everything, getting artwork out to the masses proved difficult under the circumstances. Many shows went virtual with word-of-mouth advertising becoming more the norm. With more people being fully vaccinated, there are more customers able to attend shows. During the pandemic, Hollis switched her plan to go out to more shows and went all online. Starting a VIP Facebook group where collectors can see what is happening weekly, get tips for finding the right art for them, receive monthly freebies, and perhaps take part in a color course or two that she just finishes inside the online group. “I hope this can lead to a patron channel where I can help more collectors or learners, but I also need more people to know what I’ve been painting and how it can help them first. I’m on a mission to do this one person at a time,” she stated.

Her current favorite paintings are moments taken from life that one does not normally see, like a crane landing on a boat at sunset or a goose balancing on one leg. She recently did a series of swans taken from an encounter at the Roger Williams Park in Providence. The three paintings sold on the spot of revealing. “Each expressed a different motion that the swan made. I love painting nature, but as an artist, I think it’s part of my job to always push the boundaries and I have a pretty wacky, but fun fruit still-life face collection which can lift your space up for summer. I’m looking for patrons who want to join me on this boundary-pushing journey,” she explained. Machala gets inspiration from watercolor artists like John Singer Sargent. Sometimes, however, she turns to some pop art influences with still-life works, such as her “Peach on Fabric” collection. Most of her work, to date, has been fairly realistic in style. This spring, she painted 24 smaller works with more abstract realistic characteristics. Her reasoning stemmed from wanting to make a lighter (less bold) collection that celebrates new life, movement, and color. Machala recently held a month-long “2 Painting Duel” in which she took two images—one from the client and one the client selected from her website gallery—and painted them separately. The customer could choose which piece they wanted to keep. It was an event held on Facebook and had quite a bit of interest. “This was a way to get people excited about art,” she said. “For the collector, they get to add unique pieces. For the ones just beginning, they can explore what appeals to them. There’s something to love for every type of taste and style.” Her main mission is helping more people experience the joys

of art and learning more about the process regarding what appeals to them. She hopes to dispel the myth that art buying has to be stuffy or intimidating. “Art should fill people’s spaces with joy and meaning by reminding them of the things they hold dear,” she explained. Machala received her Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design from the former Mount Ida College in 2006. After several years of working in lighting design and several years in graphic design, she developed an interest in watercolor painting. She spent four years mentoring under Award-Winning Architectural Illustrator and Watercolor Painter, Frank M. Costantino, where her interest turned into a passion. “I’ve been self-taught since then. I currently explore balance in my work, both with materials and in subjects. I enjoy realism, but am always searching for new ways to paint watercolor and design unique art pieces, such as my laser cut art puzzles. I am drawn to and renewed by nature, photography, and food for my paintings’ inspirations,” she expressed. Anyone interested in following Machala on social media can do so on Facebook. Her Art Group is called Watercolor Studio Insiders - Art by Hollis Machala. People can join the group at: www.facebook.com/groups/machalarts. Ask An Expert Roof Leak Frustrations

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! Recently, we had a client that reached out to me, who was extraordinarily frustrated over a situation they were having with a leak. At one point over the past several months, we had done a repair around a pipe that was penetrating through their roof. This repair was beyond necessary, as the sealant around this particular pipe had worn away and was clearly taking in water. We repaired the issue stemming from around the pipe and assumed all was okay until we received a frantic call that the leak had either returned or had never quite stopped. It was obvious to me at this point that there was more than one point of entry. After revisiting the roof, we discovered quite a number of possibilities from where the leak “might” be coming in and offered a ‘next step’ plan, as well as the ultimate recommendation of solving the problem once and for all and installing a new roof entirely (for sure a hefty price tag, but worth the investment if it was able to happen). Chasing leaks is not an easy task. We always start with the most obvious entry point in accordance with where the exit point of the leak is being observed, and then proceed from there. At some point, the process can definitely seem like shooting a basketball blindly. When it comes to diagnosing leaks, there are only (2) surefire ways of conclusively neutralizing the situation: 1) Re-roofing entirely - essentially ripping the band-aid off – assuming that your roof is installed properly, this should absolutely fix any leak that is stemming from a roof area. 2) Opening up ceilings, walls, etc. from down below and pinpointing the exact point of penetration from the inside out. Short of these two fixes, tracking down leaks is a methodical exercise that may take quite some time to positively nail down. This is due to a variety of factors. One such factor is that many times, multiple leaks can be occurring from different parts of your roof, but because of the way that gravity functions in-line with the way your home is constructed,

they all exit from the same place. This is why in instances where one knows there is a place where a leak is coming from and this area is fixed, the leak still shows its face. As one might imagine, this is the point in time where head games might be played… Was this specific leak point fixed correctly? If the leak was fixed correctly, how many other places are things leaking from? Do I need a new roof? These are all very valid questions. As one searches for solutions, ultimately there are very few choices in terms of paths to venture down. You can either keep experimenting down the path of logic, hoping that pay dirt is hit and the leak is discovered and can be fixed. Or you can go the “drastic” route and either re-roof entirely or pinpoint things by taking areas apart from the inside and tracking the leaking area(s) down. When it comes to nuisance leaks, no matter which path is ultimately taken, something certainly has to be done. For not only can leaks be annoying to one’s psyche, but if they are not found and neutralized, they can lead to much bigger challenges down the road (rot, mold, etc.)!

UNMADE

HONOR. LOYALTY. REDEMPTION. An unforgettable film depicting the life and redemption of Rhode Island’s own Bobby Walason By Jennifer Coates

In today’s world of cinema, it is not uncommon to find crash ‘em up, beat ‘em up films that leave you completely hyped up, but also leave you completely uninvested in the characters, the plot, or the theme of the film. Special effects, throbbing soundtracks, and lots of drama may be entertaining, but one could hardly call these tactics of modern filmmaking, “life changing.” What makes a film uniquely memorable and impactful may have little to do with all the “Hollywoodization” of a story or screenplay, but rather with the relatability and authenticity of that same story or screenplay. This is certainly true of the soon-to-be premiered movie entitled “Unmade, Honor. Loyalty. Redemption.” Shop In RI 65

“Unmade” is the compelling true story of a Rhode Island hometown “boy” who survived a life of abuse, neglect, violence, crime, and unspeakable hardship, to lead a life that has defied literally all odds against him. “Unmade” is the life story of Bobby Walason and is based on the book of the same name, published in 2019, and co-written by fellow Rhode Islander, Joe Broadmeadow. Walason, who wrote, produced, and directed the film, describes it as a “docu-movie” because of its somewhat unconventional format. It takes the form of a documentary in that there are interviews with the real people with whom Walason knew over the course of his multi-layered history, but there are also re-enactments of many of the events that became the narrative of Walason’s life. What sets this film apart from the kinds of media and movies that we see today is that it is as real and as relatable as Walason and his experiences were. The people, the events, the places, the emotions, the memories ~ they are real. They are heartbreaking. They are captivating. They are powerful. Bobby Walason is one of our own as a Rhode Islander. Some might call him a success story. Some will judge him harshly and others will embrace him. But none will soon forget him. The story of Bobby Walason could hardly be called ordinary, though tragically, it may not be entirely uncommon. His story begins in the once-impoverished and depressed section of Warwick known as Oakland Beach. At this time, in 1957, the Walason family included father Charlie, mother Jane, sister, brother, and three-year old Bobby. They all live in a cramped, untidy, and decaying three-decker apartment. 66 Shop In RI

Bobby Walason as a young 40 year-old, stoic and resolved

It was a joyless, loveless life for young Bobby and his siblings from the start, mostly due to his father’s uncontrolled drinking. Charlie was an abusive, cruel, and volatile man, who ruled his family with a merciless iron fist. He appeared incapable of any love beyond that of the bottle, and sadly, this included both Jane and his very own offspring. Bobby’s childhood was marked by fear, uncertainty, randomly meted out abuse, and a simmering hatred for a man for whom the title “father” was a mere word, an absolutely meaningless word. An incident in Oakland Beach involving a destructive house fire which was accidentally set by Bobby at three years old led to the family’s ultimate move to Olneyville. The neighborhood of Olneyville

Against this backdrop, it will surprise and engage the viewer of “Unmade” to see how this tumultuous and chaotic life ultimately became one of success and redemption. A brush with death that involved a gun to his head and multiple shots to his torso turned the narrative of Bobby Walason around. “That was the turning point, when I began to step away from the life I was living to concentrate on being successful in business instead of being a zero,” Walason shared.

Bobby Walason is seen here directing one of the many compelling scenes from his soon-to-be released film, ”Unmade”

stands in the shadows of Federal Hill in Providence. Olneyville, another disadvantaged community, only brought more broken dreams, more disappointment, more sorrow for Bobby and his siblings, and included the addition of another sister. An all-consuming lack of hope or promise for the future sent young Walason on a spiraling descent into petty thievery and mischief ~ the kind of thievery and mischief that resulted from a desperate need to survive. By the innocent age of 12, Bobby had been kicked out of his house by his father, made all the more heartless by the timing of his eviction. It was Christmas Eve, in the bitter cold of winter. He was still in his pajamas. With little to call his own, Walason’s journey of struggle, privation, adversity, and pain continued. At the age of 15, Bobby was an underage prisoner at the state’s Adult Correctional Institute. While others might have been emotionally and physically destroyed at such a young and impressionable age, years of homelessness, forced stoicism, and fighting had hardened Walason. In his words, “I was a man when I went into prison; that is what saved me.” He survived prison, he survived a breakout from prison, he survived to see his life take countless other dangerous twists and turns into darkness, organized crime, despair, and yet more sorrow.

Watch the movie to see how he overcame a life of destitution, deprivation, and depravity to become the author of not only a book and the director of a film, but also the author of a life of fulfillment, joy, optimism and ultimately, redemption. While still wearing the remnants of a difficult life, Bobby Walason finally found peace and purpose. “Unmade, Honor. Loyalty. Redemption.” will premiere at the Veterans Memorial Theater in Providence on September 25th. Doors open at 7:00pm. Tickets for the film are $35 and are available at Vets Memorial or at PPAC. To learn more, visit the film’s website at www. unmade.org. An afterparty will be held where guests will meet Bobby and other cast members (tickets for this are $100 and must be purchased through Walason at 401722-9992). Bring your friends, your families, your neighbors, and even your enemies! You will never forget this film or its central character, Rhode Island’s very own, Bobby Walason.

Fur, Fins and Feathers By BRIAN LOWNEY

When I was a young boy, my father’s friend announced that he had a litter of puppies for sale. The Basset-Beagle mixes cost five dollars and my father, mother, young brother, and I visited the Westport, Massachusetts farm where the puppy was handed to our enthusiastic family. The playful hound, named “Annie,” lived with us for more than 13 years and stole more than her share of the neighbor’s rubbers, toys, garden gloves, and anything else she could grab. When I graduated from college in the late ‘70s, and began working, I sought to purchase a purebred dog. I started reading “Dog World” from cover to cover and became mesmerized by all the fascinating canine breeds. Remember that those were the pre-Internet days, and I was intrigued by the late Louis Iacobucci’s Sunday pet column that appeared in the Sunday Providence Journal. After reading about the fabled Sealyham terrier, I sought to purchase a puppy, but I could not find that particular breed available. I then searched for my second choice, a basset hound, but couldn’t locate a puppy in the area. I started attending local dog shows, such as the events sponsored by the Providence County Kennel Club and became fascinated by the various breeds and their unique histories. Every time I visited a show, I wanted a different breed. Once I learned that there was a Kerry 70 Shop In RI

Blue terrier for sale at a local kennel in Swansea, I immediately called. The local breeder owned Kerries and Wire-Fox terriers and had one Kerry puppy for sale. Needless to say, Connolly of Castletown arrived home that day and my life changed forever. Being a terrier, Connolly was a bit rambunctious and needed training. I was teaching in Westport at the time and one of my student’s fathers also owned dogs and was active in a local kennel club. I brought my dog for training, never thinking about dog shows, but just rather to have a dog that would behave and settle down. I enrolled in a class taught by Al Kirby, a consummate dog trainer from Westport, Massachusetts, who together with his wife Betty, owned Stonehouse Kennels, renowned breeders of Great Danes and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Kirby invited my mother and I to join the Wampanoag Kennel Club, an organization of which I am still a member. The Kirbys invited me to attend dog shows as a spectator, and once I attended my first “fun match” and won a ribbon, I was soon hooked. While Connolly won a few champion points, he never was a title holder. He truly was a beloved family companion, however, and spent hours every day sitting alongside my father, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. During my career in Kerries, I have exhib-

Delta Auto Body, a Rhode Island staple since 1977, is continuing on as strong as ever. Thousands of happy clients, with vehicles ranging from Ford to Ferrari, continue to trust Delta Auto Body, following an auto accident. Their ownership, however, is not content to rest. A new partnership group, including Founder and President Edward Pontarelli, along with a second generation of the Pontarelli family, is looking toward the future. A new modern website, a rental car company, sales division, and a towing company are just a few of the changes and improvements being made by Delta Auto Body as they emerge from the pandemic. In 1977, Ed Pontarelli, Sr. founded Delta Auto Body at its original location in Johnston, RI. The shop was an immediate success, as thousands of customers learned to trust Ed’s impeccable repair work and attention to detail. In fact, Ed Pontarelli was named the very first certified collision analyst in the state of Rhode Island. In 2011, having outgrown the original location, Ed moved Delta Auto Body to its current location in Providence, adjacent to the Providence Place Mall and minutes from downtown. The new location at 30 Acorn Street, offered more space and room for modern equipment, continuing Ed’s determination to always improve and keep up with the times and technology.

Consistency, attention to detail, and a desire to treat customers like family have secured 44 years of success for Delta. But the next generation is looking to build upon that strong base. They understand that an auto accident is a period of anxiety and stress. How will I get to work tomorrow? How do I deal with insurance companies? How do I know that my vehicle will be repaired correctly? For this reason, the growth and improvements made at Delta Auto Body have been done with the sole desire of making the process much easier and faster for the customer. As they have historically done, Delta Auto Body will handle all of the insurance company interactions. Delta will take the reins with reporting the claim, if not previously done, and work to quickly obtain an estimate for your vehicle so that repairs can begin. Of course, throughout their history, Delta has never let the insurance company off easily. Delta Auto Body has a stellar reputation in the industry and with their customers, but they do not appear on any of the insurance company “approved” lists. This is because founder, Ed Pontarelli, refuses to shortcut repairs in an effort to satisfy insurance company demands, even if this means losing the opportunity to have cars referred to him by those same insurance companies. Experience dealing with all major and minor insurance carriers so that you don’t have to, is just the start to the Delta Auto process.

Delta Auto Rental was created to help streamline the rental and collision processes. Clients can now drop their car off at Delta Auto Body and leave in one of their own rental vehicles. No delays. No waiting an hour for a rental car to be delivered. No Uber to a nearby rental facility. And because Delta Auto Body knows exactly where the vehicle is in the repair process and how long it will require to complete, that information is automatically passed on to the rental department without the customer having to juggle multiple calls back and forth between shop and rental carrier. Delta Towing was yet another step towards making the customer process as easy as possible. Wherever your vehicle is located, whether in your driveway, on the side of the road, or in a tow yard used by the police, Delta Towing will immediately send out a truck to recover your vehicle and bring it to their facility for repairs. Delta Auto Body now has multiple tow trucks able to pick you up 24/7, 365 days a year. A simple call to the shop will begin the process of picking up your car and having a rental vehicle waiting for you. In almost all cases, any associated fees will be covered by the insurance company. Finally, Delta Auto Sales will be available in late 2021, for our large family of old and new customers. Should you be in the unfortunate position where your vehicle is totaled after an accident, Delta plans to help you find your next vehicle. Of course, Delta Auto Sales is available to everyone, not just accident clients. Just like their thousands of satisfied collision customers, Delta Auto Sales plans to extend their well known customer service to a notoriously uncomfortable and unfriendly service industry…used car sales. Forty-four years have passed since Ed Pontarelli, Sr. opened the doors to Delta Auto Body. Despite countless changes to motor vehicles in those four decades, and ever changing insurance laws and regulations, Delta Auto Body remains a benchmark in the industry. Today, they begin setting their sights on the next forty-four years.

Committed to Service (and Parts) By Mark Berger New Director of Parts and Service Operations Nick Sansone building a successful, winning culture. Nick Sansone has a lot of experience working in the automotive industry. He has worked throughout New England, Florida and Colorado and has seen car shopping habits from many perspectives. His latest sights are to make his new home at Toyota of Smithfield a model of excellence. After working at the Berlin City Auto in the Greater Portland area, including NH and VT markets, for the past nine years, Nick began his new position about one month ago. His business relationship with Toyota of Smithfield General Manager John Durrani helped make this transition seamless. The duo worked together in various capacities in Maine and Vermont. That partnership strengthened once the opportunity to work together in Rhode Island surfaced. Sansone’s goal is having his 35- employee staff embrace and execute his vision. “Our number one focus is our customers,” Sansone said. “I want to empower the team and have them succeed based on teamwork and working toward achieving a common goal.”

Sansone credits his own success to his core values: honesty, integrity, caring, teamwork, excellence and quality. Those virtues have served him well in the industry. In his new role, Sansone wants to create a culture of a competitive environment. That said, his primary goal is having a “team first” approach to ensuring everyone contributes and shares in their success. As for the transition from Northern New England to Smithfield, Sansone said there isn’t much of a difference concerning purchasing vehicles. “People are people. Portland is as close to a metropolitan city as Boston and is a beautiful city. Their buying habits aren’t that far different from here or anywhere else I’ve worked,” he said. The dealership will hold its monthly private sale. This month’s event takes place on August 28-29 from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM by appointment only. Those who attend will be expected to follow social guidelines but also have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.

The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front and the best available leasing and financing terms up front. Durrani said this is just part of the all-around, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication. Schedule an appointment by calling them at 401-723-0962 or on their website at www.toyotaofsmithfield.com.
