Owner of Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, Anthony Palmisano, knows Federal Hill in Providence well. His family has been a part of that neighborhood for more than a century after emigrating from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His family grew up close to the area, and when he opened his restaurant on 441 Atwells Ave. in Providence three years ago, it was a homecoming for him and his family.

Ingredients: 3 tablespoons Brown Sugar

I'm usually a pork rib guy. But recently, I bought a nice slab of beef ribs from my butcher. I love the flavor of the Kona coffee crusted NY Strip at the Capital Grille in Providence, and decided to try my hand at my own coffee rub for these ribs. (If you don’t have Kona coffee on hand, use your favorite.)

1 tablespoon Ground Kona Coffee

In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, coffee, salt, garlic, onion, and cocoa. Mix well.

1 tablespoon Kosher Salt 1 teaspoon Granulated Garlic 1 teaspoon Granulated Onion 1 Teaspoon Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 5 lbs. Beef Ribs 12 Shop In RI

Remove the skin on the underside of the ribs. I do this by sliding a knife under a corner of the skin, exposing just enough of a tab that I can grab onto. The meat can be slippery, so pulling the skin off with a folded piece of paper towel in your hands gives a better grip.

Cut the ribs into 2-rib portions. Place all the rib pieces on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.

Generously rub the coffee rub into all sides of the rib pieces, turning them meat-side-up, and let them sit on the baking sheet at room temperature for about a half hour, while you warm the oven up to 350 degrees.

Place the sheet pan of ribs in the oven and bake for 30 minutes.

Remove the ribs from the oven, and lower the heat to 250. Wrap the ribs in aluminum foil, 2 sections per packet, and place them back on the baking sheet. Place the baking sheet back in the oven and cook them for 4 more hours.

Remove the ribs from the oven and take them out of the foil, placing them back on the baking sheet and back into the 250-degree oven for 30 more minutes.

Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau By: Desi Baker Myke Yeager Photography Few industries have been hit harder by the COVID-19 pandemic than the tourism industry and Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB) President and CEO Kristin Adamo has found herself in the eye of that storm for more than a year. Kristen and her team are responsible for booking meetings, conventions, and sporting events in Rhode Island, as well as marketing Providence as a leisure travel destination. In a typical year, they book about 260 events worth around $80 million in direct spending to the state. They also work with more than 430 partner businesses on promotions, such as Providence Restaurant Weeks and through their website GoProvidence.com. This is a day in the life of one of Providence’s most extraordinary women.

A Day in the Life 6:30 a.m. I’m the type of person that wakes

up and immediately goes for my phone. I check my email and then my social media accounts – Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. I have never had a Facebook page but I am a big Tweeter. I think it’s a great way to talk to leaders in government, the media, and the community. Plus, I like to know what Chrissy Teigen is up to. I also check my calendar so I can mentally prepare for the day ahead.

7 a.m. As a news junkie, I like to multi-task

by reading the New York Times, Providence Journal, and Boston Globe online while watching “CBS This Morning.” I usually find something that is relatable to my workday, especially as we try to figure out how to reopen safely and profitably in the wake of the pandemic.

7:30-8:30 a.m. Shower, breakfast, and –

most importantly – feed the dog. My rescue dog, Snowy Adamo, has me on a short leash. She likes her breakfast promptly.

8:30 a.m. Tom Time! Our Vice President of Sales, Tom Riel, has been instrumental to my professional and personal survival during this pandemic. We usually take about 20 minutes to go through our days, troubleshoot any issues that may arise, and compare notes on the staff. My entire team is amazing and they have been through an incredibly difficult ordeal this past year. You have to take care of your staff and make sure they know how appreciative you are of their efforts, while helping them through any problems or issues.

9 a.m. I get Zoom-ready. My hair just kind of does what it wants, but I do put on makeup if I have a lot of Zoom meetings or some sort of media appearance. I usually have on a decent shirt, but with yoga pants, which are conveniently out of camera range.

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. A lot of my day is spent on the phone. Because we are not back in the office yet, I spend a lot of time talking to individual members of my staff. We also have a lot of partners with whom we work, especially now. I talk to RI Hospitality Association President Dale Venturini almost daily, as she is at the forefront of our industry’s lobbying efforts. Another big partner is Commerce RI, and on most days, me and their marketing head, Matt Sheaff, are working on some sort of initiative designed to help bring people to Providence.

12:30 p.m. Lunch is usually something reasonably healthy and is immediately followed by a giant iced coffee. I need the energy because, unless it’s really cold or the weather is bad, I take Snowy Adamo for a good walk. I use the Run Across America app to log my mileage and create challenges for myself. I think these walks have helped keep me sane during these challenging times. I am fortunate to live near the water and Snowy loves to run the length of the beach, particularly if she can terrorize a few seagulls in the process.

We try to do at least two miles around the neighborhood.

1:30 – 5 p.m. Like everyone else, I am sick of Zoom, but it is a necessary evil if you want to get things done, and I have a lot to do! Part of my job is promoting the destination and the PWCVB to the media so I do a lot of local, regional, and national media spots. It really upsets me that the press has taken such a beating lately. I think they’ve done an excellent job of educating and spotlighting what the pandemic has done to my industry.

I also work with a lot of like-minded organizations who are trying to re-open the city and the state in a collaborative way. One I work with very closely is The Providence Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting downtown. I also talk to my fellow tourism leaders in regions throughout the state.

We all work very closely together.

One of my primary objectives is to preserve the things that make Providence special. I spend a lot of time checking in on restaurant owners, neigh-

borhood association leaders, and arts’ organizations. We need to make sure that things like WaterFire, PPAC, and our neighborhood, survive the pandemic, to be ready to welcome tourists again.

5 p.m. With things opening up a bit more, I sometimes have actual meetings. Yay! I try to do them outside and over coffee or a cocktail in one of Providence’s neighborhoods. Restaurants and other small businesses have been hit so hard that I like to not only support them, but also post about them on social media. I want them to know that I am on their side.

6 p.m. Here’s a little secret – elected officials

very rarely keep office hours. If they are going to call, chances are they will do it after the workday is done. I’ve really been heartened by the genuine empathy our leaders have shown the tourism industry and their willingness to work on our behalf. In Providence, I work with Mayor Elorza or his senior team every day. The one I talk to the most is probably my friend State Senator Josh Miller, who also happens to be a Providence restaurant owner, and has been a big part of the effort to support the hospitality industry in Rhode Island.

6:30 p.m. Dinner is never a big deal for me. I’m a lot like my dad, who loves a good charcuterie board and a nice glass of red wine. Speaking of my dad, I usually check in with him around this time.

7 p.m. Because most of my days are chaotic, I try to do things that declutter my mind and let me concentrate on other things. I do the New York Times Crossword every day and I am convinced that I could be a “Jeopardy” champion.

8 p.m. One last check of email and social media and then I try to find something interesting to watch. I either like really serious documentaries or really silly sitcoms. Nothing in between will do.

11 p.m. Time for bed. I’m usually pretty tired,

but the pandemic has made my work more important than ever before and I feel privileged to be able to help tourism businesses and advocate for my industry.

One small change can assist with creating a new you.

Give up one bad habit. Stop eating chips. Stop drinking soda. Stop having dessert everyday. Make it part of your routine to walk a mile every day. Something, just do something. It’s that easy. This one change will be the beginning of a life change. It takes one small initiative to start making one change that will lead to another. You will start feeling better, and before you know it, many of your bad habits will fall by the wayside. You will start eliminating a lot of unhealthy foods, once you eliminate one. Before you know it, you are losing weight.

It’s tempting to follow fad diets or attempt to make drastic changes to your lifestyle, but lasting success will come when you resolve to make gradual changes that lead to lifestyle changes that are permanent.

That’s why I suggest starting with one thing at a time.

Don’t go big. It won’t last. Start small and it will gradually grow into a lifestyle change. As you gradually cut unhealthy foods from your diet, the realization will be that you are not really missing anything and are actually feeling better, and your life will have noticeable improvements.

Here are a couple of helpful tips. When eating a meal, I recommend not finishing everything on the plate. Take a small portion, especially when at a restaurant, put it aside, and bring it home. If at home, just put some aside for the next day. You will be saving hundreds of calories over the year by not eating everything on your plate.

If after eating you are still feeling hungry, take a breather, walk away from the table, and give yourself a few minutes to realize that you may actually be full. Chew gum, for the act of chewing. This may sound crazy, but it works. Tasting the gum and the act of chewing, subconsciously makes you think you are eating.

Incorporating exercise into your daily life is also key to achieving and maintaining good health. If you can, and yes you can, fit thirty minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, into your schedule, five times a week. You have to make this a priority, just like eating and sleeping. Yes, you can find thirty minutes. We are all busy, but feeling great and being healthy is so important. We need to move to be healthy, and when you feel good you are a happier person overall.

To begin, walk just ten minutes a day. Set your alarm to awaken just ten minutes early, and begin your day with a walk, or head out during your lunch break for a midday jolt, or grab a family member after dinner for an evening stroll. Eventually, you can do all three, and you’ll have your thirty minutes of moderate daily exercise. Remember, small changes lead to big results. Next, alternate your walks with thirty minutes of weight-bearing exercise twice a week, for a total of one hour each week.

Building muscle with these exercises will help you lose fat and burn more calories. The weights don’t have to be heavy — just find a weight you can handle. It’s a misconception that weight lifting is only to “bulk up.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Doing some sort of weight lifting or resistance training activates your muscle and your muscles will stay active for an average of up to two days, depending on your size, height, and weight.

As muscles are active, they continue to burn fat.

People often worry about the time they’re missing with their family or friends when they exercise, so invite them to join in. Healthy living is for everyone. I have said in the past, and will say again, you are not being selfish because you take time to exercise. Especially moms. Mom’s always feel guilty and put everyone else first. You have to put you first.

When mom is happy, the house is happy. When mom doesn’t feel good about herself and is miserable, the

rest of the family feels it. Think about it, mom is the core of the house so it is so important for her to take time to feel good about herself before she can make everyone else happy. It’s not selfish at all. It’s actually just the opposite. It’s doing something to benefit the whole family. This holds true for those who aren’t moms, as well. Life is a whole different place when one feels good in their own skin. Male or female, parent or no kids, married or single, you are a happier, more energetic person, when you feel good! Keep moving to live life to the fullest.

All you Need to Know About Getting Vaccinated Against COVID-19 in RI

By Julia Romano In Rhode Island, there are different avenues to get vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus. The three main ways that people are able to get vaccinated are at state-run vaccination centers, designated local pharmacies, and other local and regional vaccination sites, such as clinics run by cities and towns, some hospitals and healthcare systems, community health centers, and other sites in the community. Everyone will be following the same vaccination timeline and eligibility requirements. However, some will move through their priority populations at different speeds due to population size and operational capacity.

Within the past several weeks, Rhode Island has been on target with vaccinating their intended age groups, including those ages 65 to 74 and also, those 75 years of age and older In the weeks ahead, RI residents, ages 16-64 with underlying health conditions (The qualifying health conditions can be found on the RI Health Dept. website.) are expected to have vaccines available to them, followed by those 50-59 years of age in mid-April.

The following critical information, provided by the RI Department of Health, is being made available every month in this publication to help those who may not have access to the Internet.

What do I need to do before my appointment?

• Registration: To schedule an appointment, please go to vaccinateRI.org or call the automated phone line at 844-930-1779.

• From the vaccinateRI.org home page, click on “Find a Clinic.”

• On the next page, you will be asked “Which services are you seeking?” Make sure you select “COVID-19 vaccination.” You can narrow your search by entering your ZIP code and/or preferred date for appointments.

• A list of sites and dates will appear at the bottom of 38 Shop In RI

the page. Select the site and date that work for you.

• You will then be asked to provide your name, contact information, and demographic information.

• If you have insurance, please provide the requested information. Health insurance NOT mandatory.

• Bring your insurance card (if you have insurance) with you when you get vaccinated so staff can check that the information was entered correctly.

• Please cancel any other COVID-19 vaccine appointments you may be holding at other locations.

• Please wear a mask and loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm.

• Getting to your appointment: • Anyone enrolled in Medicaid or older than 60 can use the Non-Emergency Medical Transport Service provided

by MTM.

What happens at my vaccination appointment?

• Staff at vaccination sites may ask you for an ID, but this only applies to people who have one. Bring an ID, if you have one, to verify your name in the vaccination system.

You can still get the COVID-19 vaccine without insurance or an ID.

• Please arrive at your assigned time. If you have an appointment, there is a vaccine for you. CLINIC WILL NOT RUN OUT.

Other efforts are also underway to help provide the best possible access to the vaccine. Conduct a Dress Rehearsal Before Retiring By: Ed Pontarelli Two emotions are likely to strike those who are nearing retirement – excitement and fear. Leaving the world of alarm clocks and offices and having time to pursue your own passions on a daily basis is liberating – but the apprehension of entering a new life stage can easily creep in. Although work-related stress will disappear, the responsibility of filling each week in a satisfying way can be a challenge. Top that off with the ever-present concern about long-term financial security in retirement and the nerves can grow even greater.

The truth is, feeling excitement and fear is okay, but what if your retirement isn’t everything you envisioned it to be before you left the workforce? What if life after work turns out to be far different from your expectations?

Consider a practice run If you’re nearing retirement, you’ve likely taken steps to prepare financially for the future. But there’s one important thing you might not have considered adding to your pre-retirement checklist – a practice run. How you choose to spend your time (and in many cases, your money) in retirement is your decision to make, but it’s not always an easy one. As we age, our interests, hobbies and relationships change. What you may consider your “ideal” retirement when you’re 55 may not fit when you’re 65. This evolution can make it hard to plan accurately for retirement.

To the extent you’ve made a financial commitment to a certain lifestyle, this can pose real problems. If you’ve already committed a significant amount of savings toward a particular lifestyle (a home in another part of the country or a trip around the world for a year), changing your mind in ten or fifteen years could throw a wrench in your long-term financial plan.

Those who have based their financial plan for retirement on the idea that they will be living in a new location may benefit from a practice run before making the big move. It’s natural to change your mind about what you want, but it’s better to understand the potential implications of changing your mind before you actually retire as it can have unintended consequences.

For example, consider an individual who has lived his entire life in New York, but moves to Florida when he retires – where taxes and cost-of-living are generally lower. Deciding after several years to relocate back to New York to be near family – where cost of living and tax rates differ – can mean the dollars he’s saved will have to be re-allocated and his savings may not go as far as he’d planned.

The idea of practicing retirement may also mean leaving the 40-hour work week for something that’s more part-time. Some people may want to take a part-time role with their current employer, or work as a consultant to continue experiencing the challenge of work. This also can offer important financial benefits that help preserve their nest egg.

Time for a financial rehearsal Practice can also be beneficial in another way – simulating how to manage your expenses in retirement. The idea that your cash flow no longer comes from a reliable paycheck, but from other sources like Social Security and personal savings can come as a shock – even to those who are well-prepared for this change.

One idea to accomplish this is to run two accounts for a certain period of time. Through one account, manage all of your household and lifestyle expenses that you expect during retirement.

This includes the costs for necessities like food, clothing, shelter, utilities, taxes and insurance as well as “nice- to-have” items like dining out, traveling, etc.

Keep in mind that you may have to estimate or inflate your lifestyle expenses for retirement as they could rise when you have more free time. The best way to get a handle on these expenses is to experience them while you’re still working. Take that trip to Europe before retirement and find out first-hand what you can do within your budget. If the cost is different than expected, make adjustments to your financial projections to more accurately reflect reality.

Through the second account, manage all of your expenses that are expected to end in retirement like principal and interest on a mortgage payment (if your home will be paid off), current car payments (although car payments can certainly happen again in retirement), college costs for your kids and contributions to retirement plans.

Perfecting life in retirement A little practice can go a long way toward easing emotional and financial concerns when it comes to making the jump into retirement. A retirement trial run may not answer all of your questions – and it doesn’t necessarily include the unexpected events that can often throw retirement off track – but doing it for six months or so can be very beneficial in determining if your budget and lifestyle expectations for retirement are realistic. Consider working with a financial advisor who can help you determine a budget and a retirement income plan that fits your needs and desires for retirement.

If you are paying more attention to how your lifestyle decisions may impact the planet or your community, you can apply the same perspective to your investments. An increasingly popular investment strategy is known as environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing.

It allows you to focus your investments in ways that are designed to generate a more meaningful impact beyond dollars and cents.

Traditionally, many investors have looked at the investment selection process as one focused exclusively on financial considerations such as a company’s profitability and the strength of its balance sheet. While keeping those factors in mind, ESG investing incorporates non-financial aspects of the investment that are deemed to be consistent with your own values. By applying ESG, you can be more intentional in how you put your investment dollars to work.

In some contexts, investment approaches similar to ESG may be identified by other terms, such as Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) or sustainable investing. While there are modest differences in the definitions, the general approaches they take are similar.

The ESG standard To get a better sense of how ESG investing is defined, here are some of the ways that companies are measured in each of the three categories: • Environment – consideration is given to how companies deal with challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions, the sustainability of its products, recycling policies and its impact on natural resources.

• Social – this has to do in part with how the company manages its internal work environment including diversity in its hiring practices and management. It also relates to the company’s approach to the broader world, including its involvement in the community and countries in which it chooses to do business.

• Governance – this primarily focuses on a company’s management practices, including diversity of corporate boards, the reasonableness of executive pay and policies around support of political candidates or causes.

ESG investing is not limited to stocks.

While equity investing may represent the most significant aspect of ESG investing, it isn’t the only market that is in play. Fixed income investments, private equity and private debt also offer ESG options that can be incorporated into a broadly diversified portfolio.

A growing marketplace ESG investing is increasingly accessible for individuals.

You can choose to identify and invest in individual securities, or you can utilize mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that pursue ESG strategies.

It may be beneficial to establish your own framework, prioritizing ESG objectives that are most important to you.

Then you can begin to match specific investments that are best suited to your own preferences.

Keep in mind that when choosing investments, ESG considerations aren’t applied to the exclusion of other considerations. For example, as an equity investor, you are still looking to identify companies that you believe are in a strong financial position and can generate favorable results for your portfolio. From there, ESG screens can be applied to help determine which of these investments can fulfill your broad investment objectives.

Anyone working at a job or involved in a career has dealt with management. Some people who lead do so primarily with the company’s interest in mind.

Others put themselves first over everything else.

The way people in charge perform impacts company morale and employee productivity. When executive behavior matches company and employee values, positive results are achieved for all parties.

In many cases, stories about horrible bosses far exceed those who are giving and inspirational.

After all, there was a movie made called “Horrible Bosses” (two of them, actually) that depict some of the bad or inappropriate behavior and tactics used to keep employees “down” or “in line.” Also, can we ever forget the 1980 movie classic “Nine to Five,” starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin?

Mary T. O’Sullivan, an executive business coach based in North Kingstown, decided to do something about that: namely, chronicle examples of bad bosses and toxic workplaces in print. Her new book, “The Leader You Don’t Want to Be,” talks about those instances of

poor judgment and bad decisions that seriously jeopardized the careers of the hard-working people in large organizations. With several decades of dealing with some heavy hitters throughout corporate America, O’Sullivan demonstrates that the differences between an effective leader and one who fails are profound.

“Most people have been around bosses who play favorites, give preferred projects to ‘their’ coworkers, or dump undesired work on others.

Those are all easy examples of being ineffective,” O’Sullivan said. “Management styles vary from industry to industry, business to business, and person to person. The way one deals with those around them has profound consequences—good and bad. It becomes evident when someone in authority doesn’t have the knowledge of the job and begins sinking.”

Her book details the good, bad, and ugly stories of bosses in ideal and less than ideal circumstances.

Some leaders dealt with the problems head on and with grace and dignity, leading to a successful conclusion. Oftentimes, the situation went the other way and led to feelings hurt, egos bruised, and ultimately, personnel changes.

The book details some of the well-known cases of bosses doing the wrong thing. One such case was the Boston Archdiocese Child Abuse scandal. The Church sought to silence those coming forward,

accusing priests of inappropriate behavior and not addressing the problem. Instead, they kept quiet, and in some cases, moved the accused priests to other parishes. The Church leaders reasoned that this would solve the problem and the issue would go away… …or so Church leaders thought.

Instead of the scandal being “swept under the rug,” more people spoke out against the Church and their “blind eye” to what happened. Confidence in the Catholic Church and their leaders took a massive hit. It ended with the Church having to pay out millions of dollars to abuse victims and the head of the Boston Archdiocese, Bernard Cardinal Law, resigned. The Church has still not recovered from their missteps, and the results have been fewer parishioners, less donations, and overall public distrust about the Archdiocese.

O’Sullivan said that those leadership lessons need to be learned for future generations so they will know what not to do in handling such a delicate and life-shattering issue.

“One thing that we learned from this example was to not hide information because it will eventually come out,” she said. “The Boston Archdiocese made a critical mistake in keeping everything internal and not addressing the problems when they came to light. When they did, they did little to nothing to do the right thing. The results of their decisions were swift and drastic in the eyes of the public.

“Leaders who choose to skirt the truth staring them in the face are going to meet severe repercussions in the process,” O’Sullivan added.

Dare to Dream Ranch Helps Veterans

Gives those who served our country the opportunity to restore their self esteem and learn new activities to stay healthy and productive.

By Mark Berger Karen Dalton has made it her mission to help others who may be down on their luck and/or need a second chance. She grew up under difficult conditions, and that narrative continued into her adult life. Despite the turmoil in her life, she managed to not only come out stronger, but also more focused and with a stronger purpose in life.

Dalton founded Dare to Dream Ranch in Foster, to help the brave men and women who proudly served our country. The facility offers many fun and engaging activities to stimulate the mind and help maintain motor skills.

The Ranch’s goal is giving the visitors some sense of mission and purpose.

“These are America’s heroes, first and foremost. They risked their lives to protect the freedom we may take for granted. Because of this, we need to do all we can to ensure they are never forgotten and always cared for. The Ranch 48 Shop In RI

Her father suffered from anger issues after leaving the marines.

Her ex-husband also had issues managing his anger. Many of her clients went into the military to get away from some form of abuse, from sexual, physical, or emotional. Dalton’s goal is to break the cycle.

While they do not have any employees working there, the Ranch has a dedicated group of volunteers, who pitch in whenever possible. They also offer veterans, who may not have any place to stay, the option to work on the farm in exchange for someplace to call home, as availability allows. The goal is to enjoy the agri-therapy by working at the ranch and also an opportunity to save money to purchase their very own home—a very noble gesture and proof of Dalton’s hopes of putting people on a path toward self-sufficiency.

The Ranch, located at 12 Snagwood Road, has plenty of room for equine- facilitated coaching, gardening, wood -working, beekeeping, agritherapy, and other amenities.

The flags, which are made to the exact specifications of his customers, have come to represent Jones’ respect for his fellow men and women in whatever “uniform” they wear. The process of making them is time-consuming, some might even say it is also therapeutic and intensely gratifying, but to Jones, it is always personal.

Making the flags begins with the customer him or herself.

Jones wants to know who they are, what is important to them. While many of his flags are designed and built for his fellow and former “men in arms,” they are all made just for that single person. Whether they showcase the American flag or the flag of the customer’s own country, or if they are personalized to show the insignia of an Armed Force, police association, firefighter’s company, or even a family crest, it is Jones’ mission to make them represent its recipient. These finishing details come only after Jones has constructed the flag itself, a slow but refined process.

First, Jones will find just the right wood for the project ~ oak, pine or walnut. Each 1” by 2” strip of wood (13 in all) is then burned with a torch, giving it a charred look. Then comes the sanding process where the excess char is sanded down so the natural grain of the wood is revealed. A coat of carefully blended stain is then applied before the strips of wood are glued and clamped together. Then the waiting begins while the glue sets. Reinforcements are added so the flag is sturdy, unbreakable, strong.

Once the construction part is over, the hand-carved details are added. This is when the flags come to life!

A name, a symbol, a patch, an insignia. The smallest of details. To pass Jones’ strict standards, they must be perfect, flawless. Lastly, three layers of clear coat are added to give the flag a seal of protection and glossy shine. These flags become treasured keepsakes to those who get them, and they are built to last.

One might say that the making of these flags is a

metaphor for the “making” of those who will receive them ~ tested by adversity, worn down but only made stronger, then polished and fortified to endure what the future holds. They are symbolic in every way.

Thomas Jones may be a talented woodworker, and this is evident when you see his flags, but what you don’t see is the personal story behind the man who makes them. Jones had a rough start in life; one that would have brought a lesser person down. His journey took him from high school drop-out and GED graduate to a soon-to-be Master’s degree graduate. It took him from a member of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections to a member of the 169th Military Police Company (the very same company into which his son Thomas Jr. just enlisted). It took him from the son of a police officer up the ranks to the influential position of president of the FOP and to the respected office of Lieutenant in the North Providence police department.

Of all the hats and uniforms that Jones wears, however, the one he is most proud of is that of husband and father. In his words, “Everything I do, I do for them.” His wife Jessica, who is pregnant with their second child (following in the footsteps of big sister Milania) is the “wind beneath Jones’ wings,” his inspiration, greatest supporter and best stain-mixer!

Like Humans, Animals Grieve When a Loved one Dies

Do animals grieve when their owner or another member of the herd dies?

A few years ago, when my cat, Sugar, suddenly disappeared, my other feline, Daisy, shrieked incessantly for days, until I discovered the missing feline’s lifeless body hidden under a bush in a remote section of my backyard.

Once Sugar was buried, her feline housemate gradually returned to a normal routine, but still made daily trips out to the backyard to visit her friend’s grave.

Most animal behaviorists and trainers agree that the majority of cats and dogs, like their human counterparts, each experience grief in their own way, for varying periods of time. Some pets are sad for only a few days, while others sink into a deep depression that can last for several weeks or longer.

My late friend, respected Pug breeder and exhibitor, Alan Alford, reveals that oftentimes in multi-dog households, a canine will mourn the loss of a special buddy.

“In my experience, dogs frequently grieve the loss of a ‘friend,’” Alford said. “I’ve watched some of my dogs over the years that have bonded with another pet — sharing food and sharing toys with that specific dog, while never permitting other members of the ‘family’ to participate.”

Alford said that some dogs, like humans, develop depression when a loved one dies.

“I’ve also witnessed dogs go into a depressed state when that special friend dies,” he said. “The first day or two, the grieving pet just wanders around looking for his ‘buddy.’

By the end of the second day, the dog stops searching and just mopes around and refuses food, play, and toys.”

The well-known toy dog authority emphasized that it takes most canines about a week to return to “normal” and start enjoying life once again.

“There’s no question in my mind that these dogs have just passed through a grieving state over the departure of their mate,” Alford expressed.

Marsha Pugh, a noted writer and animal expert, disclosed that herding animals, such as horses, cows, and sheep, form family bonds, and grieve over the loss of a loved one.

“In their natural world, they would live in large family groups,” she wrote in an email from her Maryland home.

“If a horse is sold away from the group, the rest will whinny and neigh for weeks afterward,” she disclosed.

“It’s very traumatic to change the herd dynamic.”

Pugh noted that she had heard that elephants grieve if they can’t mourn the passing of one of their deceased herd mates, so when one of her own horses died, she decided to conduct an experiment.

“When my oldest mare died, I allowed the others to see her, sniff her body, and realize that she had died, not just disappeared,” she wrote. Pugh added that the mare’s daughter, Dolly, was brought out of the barn to witness the burial.

“She stood over her mother until the heavy equipment came to move the body, dig her burial spot, and bring her down to the site,” Pugh continued. “Dolly followed the backhoe and waited patiently, standing guard until her mother was completely covered and the equipment left. From that day forward, when she was let out of her stall in the morning, the first place Dolly would go was to her mother’s grave and stand over it for a few moments before moving on to graze. She is now buried alongside her mother.”

Pugh revealed that cows also grieve.

“I saw my neighbor’s cow give birth to a premature calf,” she recalled. “It didn’t live long, less than an hour. As the mother stood over her baby, trying to nudge it back to life, all the other cows gathered around. Then they formed a line and each cow walked by, gently touching the dead calf and then moved on. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.” Pugh remembers that the cows also comforted the mother by gently nudging her and remaining with the grieving animal for the rest of the day.

“Years later, when that same farmer’s horse died and was being buried, the cows that had been lying in the cool shade under the trees all stood up and watched the burial. It was almost like they were paying respect to the dead,” she added.

Perhaps the longest running technical debate that I have come across in my more than 25 years in business is the discussion of which is “better,” oil or latex?, when it comes to exterior & interior home paint and stain products.

This is probably a subject that I could literally write a book on, as I believe it really has many different answers.

One of the things to keep in mind while speaking on the subject is that the paint manufacturers over the past few decades have had to navigate through increasingly stringent laws regarding what they are able to put and not put into oil-based primers, paints, and stains [most notably the management of their VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content].

While doing all of this, I have noticed more so now than ever before, exterior oil-based finish coatings seem to encourage the growth of mildew, and I do believe there is a direct correlation with a lot of the tweaking that has been done to their chemical makeups.

With all that being said, in a nutshell, if someone were to ask me at the time of my writing this, which situations would I recommend for “oil” and which situations would I recommend for “latex,” here is what my very short, abbreviated list would break down as…

Oil: - Priming new bare wood - Priming with the intention of neutralizing tannin bleed - Any natural wood stain that will be top-coated with a polyurethane - Polyurethane in certain situations - Certain types of deck/natural exterior stain coatings (with the expectation that mildew growth may be apt to happen sooner than you might like, even with mildew inhibitors added in, and the expectation that the surfaces will have to be washed to get rid of the mildew every so often)

Latex (I am also including acrylic & waterborne formulatedbased products in this category, without getting into a deep, technical discussion about the differences of them all): - Exterior & interior general finish coating - Polyurethane in certain situations - Specialty primers aimed at neutralizing specific types of exterior & interior peeling situations - As a primer over the aforementioned specialty primers (to serve as a “bridge” primer to the finish coat) - In place of more traditional oil-based enamels, as an interior trim finish - As a clear, water protectant Regarding polyurethanes, there are certain situations I would recommend using oil-based polyurethanes, and other situations where I would recommend using latex/ acrylic-based polyurethanes. Oil polyurethanes will “yellow-out” over a period of time; the latex/acrylic-based ones should not.

This is meant to be my brief, humble opinion on this subject. It is definitely one of my most asked questions though, and I thought it would be nice to provide the overview.

Southern Hospitality: Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce strives to help the business community and beyond.

One enduring legacy from last year has been people helping people.

That has occurred in many forms: from neighborhood to neighborhood, person to person, and especially business to business. Everyone had to chip in and do their part to ensure not only they survived, but their supply chain partners did as well. While the state shut down last year, statewide Chambers of Commerce stood forward to help area companies who needed supplies and access to funds to continue operating.

That was no exception at the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, located on Old Tower Hill Road in South Kingstown. Their ability to pivot and help others has been a major reason why they increased their membership and expanded their facilities.

Executive Director Joe Viele has seen the possibilities firsthand. Before retiring his business, Viele had been an SRI Chamber member for decades. His business saw the benefits of joining, and until he accepted his current title eighteen months ago, he remained a steadfast supporter and fierce advocate for small businesses.

His feelings on that topic haven’t changed since accepting his new role.

“I have been a member here for a long time, serving on every Board seat available, and have been involved with many of the Chamber’s endeavors,” Viele said. “Every Chamber is different, but of all of the ones I visited, the Southern Rhode Island Chamber was the one that 74Shop ShopInIn 74 RI RI

Four months into his tenure, Viele had his first challenge: dealing with COVID-19. It was a potential minefield, with plenty of information out there, but little knowledge about its accuracy or relevance to the community. He worked with Chamber businesses and non-business members alike to pull one another through. That also held true with the state’s Chambers, who view one another as “partners” as opposed to “competitors.”

Much of that aid came in two forms.

The first was sending out supplies to the region. Those included masks, sanitizers, and cleaning products for area companies.

For the numerous grant and loan programs (Restore RI, RI Pause and the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP), they worked with any company looking to receive funds.

The “Take it Outside” initiative last fall made it possible for restaurants to have some semblance of normalcy…for a little while. So was having a place to call home.

“Having CPAs or other groups coming to hold meetings in the building has been a good

experience, and one of the many things that we can provide,” Viele said. “We can have human resource professionals come and either hold meetings or seminars for other members. Having a physical structure to call home makes a huge difference.”

He credits the work of the previous Executive Director, Elizabeth Berman, whom he said ran the Chamber “like a finelytuned machine.” There was another milestone they achieved during their tenure.

“We never closed; we remained open during the pandemic,” Viele said. We were always available to anyone who needed our services.

We took good care of those who sought our help and guidance.”

The Chamber covers the southern part of the state. Some six hundred business members comprise the Chamber, with half of them residing in town.

They service towns, ranging from Narragansett and Exeter, to North Kingstown and Richmond.

One of that region’s calling cards is tourism. With the pandemic effectively closing down beaches, hotels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions for most of 2020, the area was severely impacted. Viele believes with easing restrictions and more people receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, the tourism industry should see significant growth from a year ago. He also thinks the Chamber will benefit from the post-pandemic attrition.

“I think that once the state and federal levels begin opening up again, there will be a surge of events,” Viele said. “People are so hungry for human contact that attendance at business afterhours networking events and other functions are going to take off. COVID-19 has given everyone a new appreciation for what they have been missing for a year now.

We eagerly await the arrival of more events.”
