Uber Cuts Deal With New York Taxis Uber is short of drivers. Ride-sharing companies have cut into cabdrivers’ income. An agreement that could ease both problems has been reached, allowing passengers in New York City to choose a cab when they order a ride on Uber’s app, the Wall Street Journal reported. It’s the first such citywide partnership in the US for Uber, which has been battled by cabdrivers in multiple countries for years, though limited partnerships have been formed in other places. ”It’s bigger and bolder than anything we’ve done,” said Andrew Macdonald of Uber. spring, New York City taxi apps run by two technology companies will be integrated with Uber’s software. The apps handle credit card payments in cabs. Passengers wanting a taxi will see a price in the app before they order, per the New York Times, as they do with Uber rides. Uber said passengers will pay about the same amount for a lift in a yellow cab as they would for a standard Uber ride. Yellow cabdrivers who answer hails on the Uber app also will see a price before they accept and will be able to turn the fare down. A slice of the cab fare will go to Uber and its partners, though they wouldn’t say how much. Shop In RI Shop In RI 5

Secrets in the Kitchen Marinara Sauce by Brian J. Lowney
If you haven’t yet tasted Karen Greene’s delicious Secrets in the Kitchen marinara sauce, be prepared for a healthy taste sensation that will be enjoyed by the entire family. Greene, a Barrington resident and retired teacher assistant in the Providence public schools, created the sauce based on a family recipe at Hope and Main kitchens in Warren and offers the product at small stores throughout the region and at farmer’s markets. She’s produced the sauce for the past eight years and continues to attract a strong loyal following for customers who enjoy good, healthy food. “I grew up cooking with my mom,” Greene begins. “We cooked on Sundays. We got together and everyone was there. No one was exempt.” The entrepreneur adds that growing up in a Lebanese family in Fox Point, she enjoyed the food and friendship of Irish, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Italian and other nationalities in the bustling and closely-knit neighborhood. “I learned what my grandfather Samuel Simon used to cook,” Greene recalls. “He came from Lebanon where he was a cook for his family. He was a builder here when he came to this country and he was fine carpenter and good cook.

“My mother was so grateful for the time that she spent with her dad to learn how to create these family recipes,” Greene shares. Greene notes that her family’s appreciation for various cuisines eventually lead her to start her company, Secrets in the Kitchen, in 2014. “I wanted to showcase my cooking,” she adds, noting that she began producing the sauce at Hope and Main that year while still working as a teacher assistant. She retired four years later and now devotes her time to produce and sell the sauce and to showcase additional foodrelated events. “The ingredients in the sauce recipe are strategically placed in the large pot to give you that sauce that you crave,” Greene emphasizes. “Through trial and error, I learned how each ingredient should be placed for the flavors to blend without burning them. Although there are crushed tomatoes in my recipes, I still crush the plum tomatoes by hand, remembering that there should have a little bit of chunkiness in the sauce thus giving it the same authentic look that I saw in my mother’s pot as she cooked her sauce.” Greene adds, “Elephant garlic is a member of the leek family and it takes about a year to grow and it must have have its own designated piece of land for optimal growth. Although the original recipe called for garlic, I have routinely used elephant garlic which has a much milder flavored and is a perfect fit for our marinara sauce.”
seldom being able to find low sodium products, I felt compelled to produce a product that consumers would appreciate so I kept them in mind when I recreated this family recipe. “I’ve also heard from many customers that our marinara sauce is ‘easy on digestion’ and has no acidic effects,” Greene tells. The busy entrepreneur credits her friend, Chef Trafford Kane, who owns Kane’s Kitchen Salsa, for helping with marinara sauce production at the Hope and Main production kitchen. “We produce about 300 jars of the sauce
per month,”Greene tells, adding that the sauce is sold at Prica Farina Fresh Pasta in Warren; Barrington Butchery in Barrington; Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown; What’s Good online farmers market; Farm Fresh Rhode Island in Providence; and various farmers markets across Rhode Island. For more information: visit the webs site: www.secretsinthekitchen.com “My advice to others who want to develop a food business or any business is that the road will be hard and bumpy but you do what you love and share your passion with others, money will follow,” Greene ends.
Greene emphasizes that the sauce contains no added sugar or sweeteners and is very low in sodium. “Having having family members who’ve experienced many health issues and

As you may or may not know, RIHA is not only a womenled business, but its entire staff is also composed of talented women who are dedicated to the development of Rhode Island’s hospitality sector. They don’t just talk the talk…they walk the walk. RIHA keenly understands the challenges that women face in the hospitality industry.
Dale J. Venturini
Accelerating the Advancement of Women in Hospitality By Dale J. Venturini, President/CEO, Rhode Island Hospitality Association
In mid-February, the Rhode Island Hospitality Association (RIHA) hosted its first ever Woman Hospitality Owners Council to accelerate the advancement of women in the hospitality industry through leadership development, networking, and problem solving. The forum of Rhode Island-based female business owners gathered at Twin Oaks Restaurant in Cranston, Rhode Island, for a dinner hosted by the restaurant’s owner, Susan DeAngelis. The evening’s discussion focused on the challenges that are currently facing the hospitality industry and also included shared stories of women’s experiences, working in the industry, along with tips about how women can work together to encourage others to get into the industry. As the official voice of the industry in Rhode Island, RIHA has a responsibility to empower all members. With March’s celebration of Women’s History Month serving as inspiration, RIHA wanted to hear from the brave, forward-thinking women who are taking our little state’s most important industry by storm. The establishment of RIHA’s Woman Hospitality Owners Council comes at a time when there is significant growth in women-owned businesses within our state.
The feedback from these leaders demonstrates that there is a consistent desire to gain support and to establish an open dialogue about the difficulties they face, the experiences they have had, and the solutions they have found. By establishing the Woman Hospitality Owners Council, RIHA hopes to encourage female leaders to freely collaborate, communicate, and to contribute to the advancement of their peers and colleagues through conversation, common issues, and education. While their Council’s first forum was an invite-only event, they are planning to open future events to all womenowned hospitality businesses to generate an even more diverse conversation, learn from one another, build a larger network, and to foster a community of like minded professionals who are looking to bring success, not only to women-owned restaurants and hotels, but to the industry as a whole. Now that we are able to safely gather again, RIHA is hoping to make up for lost time by encouraging women in the industry to celebrate, support, and collaborate with one another on a more regular basis. As they look to plan upcoming events, RIHA would appreciate your feedback and input. Please feel free to send a note to Sarah@RIHospitality.org with your experiences, concerns, or issues that you’d like to discuss with other female business owners. Your thoughts will help them to shape the most relevant content and ensure that this Council is beneficial and well attended. Please stay tuned for more updates on the development of RIHA’s Woman Hospitality Owners Council and be sure to spread the word to those who may be interested in joining. For more information and to inquire about future events, please call RIHA at 401-223-1120, or visit their website at www.rihospitality.org.

Nourishing You With Meals That Delight By Brian J. Lowney
When the dedicated staff at Savory Fare turns off the lights for the day in their kitchen at Hope & Main, they can rest assured that the nutritious delicious food they have provided has made a positive impact and put a bright smile on the faces of a growing number of satisfied clients throughout many Ocean State communities. Founder Mary Wise Hughes started the food delivery service five years ago that features fresh, quality ingredients in prepared meals delivered to residences and anyone looking for a delicious food experience. In a recent interview at the Warren facility, Hughes shared that she had been toying with the idea of starting a meal service for seniors for years, but it took two programs — the Hope & Main food incubator in Warren and the Social Enterprise Greenhouse, a business accelerator in Providence — to ignite the fire. The Greenhouse, a nonprofit that partners with Brown University, offers coaching to social enterprises. Hughes enrolled in a 12-week program that helps clients refine their business plans, raise money, and perfect their pitches. Hughes, who served as a public health nutritionist at the Providence Health Center, and later as the State of Rhode Island WIC (Women, Infants, Children) nutritionist, is a 1968 graduate of Hood College in Maryland. “I started as a math major,” she recalls, adding that she quickly became interested in food and nutrition and never lost her passion for serving appetizing and nutritious cuisine. 14 Shop In RI
After adopting her son in 1992, Hughes became a stay-athome mother and then became a personal chef in 2007, when she cooked for a few family members and friends. “I love making delicious food for other people,” she tells, adding that she developed the idea for the service after hearing that many individuals need some sort of food assistance to be able to remain in their home. “Our mission is to deliver nutritious food to older adults and those less mobile,” Hughes emphasizes, noting that clients also include individuals who are recuperating, new parents, and other people who enjoy a good meal or who just might be tired of cooking. “A service like ours is unique and one that our clients love and appreciate,” the entrepreneur emphasizes. Most of the single-serving meals are frozen and can be thawed and reheated in the microwave or oven. “We utilize recipes that do well when frozen,” Hughes continues. “We focus on traditional foods that people enjoy and will remember. These meals include pot pie, macaroni and cheese, shepherd’s pie, chicken piccata, meatloaf, meatballs, crispy fish filets, and several casseroles. “We also always have a sweet treat on the menu,” she adds. Joining the staff at Savory Fare is Shelby Doggett, a Providence resident and graduate of the University of Vermont, with an extensive background in sustainable farming and food systems.
“This is a much-needed service and it’s a mission-driven enterprise,” says Doggett. “That’s what attracted me to the company. I saw that there’s a lot of potential for growth and lots of places throughout the region that can use our services.” She shares that unlike other food delivery companies, Savory Fare has no set subscription cost for services, and clients have a lot of flexibility in how much and how often to order food. “We always use high quality ingredients made from scratch, with no additives,” Hughes informs. “We cook three days per week at Hope & Main, and our delivery area extends from East Bay to Newport, Providence and south to East Greenwich, as well as North and South Kingstown. The meals are also available on www.sourcewhatsgood. com, and they deliver throughout the Ocean State and parts of Massachusetts. “Savory Fare offers a simple solution for adult children who are worried about older family members who need healthy food,” Hughes adds. “This is particularly true for individuals outside of the area, whose older family members are aging and have difficulty accessing quality nutritious food, but who want to remain at home as long as possible.” Accordingly, Savory Fare is aligned with several programs that allow the meals to be sold affordably with many choices. “Our individual servings of frozen meals fit well with the “Nourish Our Neighbor Program,” sponsored by Hope & Main, and prepared for hundreds of individuals, weekly, throughout the East Bay,” Hughes shares. “We also provide nutritious meals for seniors at the King Edward House in Newport, as part of our commitment to our community elders.” Hughes shares that she and her nine-member staff are proudly celebrating Savory Fare’s fifth anniversary and she adds that the hard-working all-female collaborative team are passionate about their work. “We want everyone on our team to do well and to succeed,” she concludes. “I think that makes us a richer business.” For more information about Savory Fare, visit their web site www.savoryfareinc.com, or contact Mary Hughes at: (401) 454-4955 or mary@savoryfareinc.com

Skinny Models
Defining the New Reality By Susan Gazerro
Be Real Campaign
I felt that this article was perfect for the month of April, as we are all starting to think about bathing suit season. Well, it’s about time that fashion companies are waking up and changing the game. We are starting to see more designers, more department stores, and more magazines showing models with all body types, not just ones that are unrealistically super skinny. For too many years, young girls thought that this was the image they had to live up to or they weren’t good enough. I remember once reading that even the models in the magazines don’t look like the models in the magazines. Today, more than ever, we know how easy it is to photoshop any picture. Well, for years, before the general public had all this technology, magazines were photoshopping photos and editing pictures to look a certain way. What we should have been told is that we all come in different shapes and sizes and skinny doesn’t define beauty, and it definitely doesn’t define healthy. We are all born with a “healthy” weight. I have always preached that you need to find that healthy weight, the one you are comfortable at and maintain it. Skinny does not mean healthy. There are skinny people who are very unhealthy and there are larger people who are very healthy. It’s about your 26 Shop In RI
healthy weight and it’s about staying active. Back to the fashion industry. Two of the biggest fashion firms in the world recently criticized the fashion industry for encouraging eating disorders. They went so far as to make changes, such as models must be larger than a French size 32, which typically equates to a UK size six or US size zero. The firms will also not use models under the age of 16 for adult clothes. France actually bans using ultra skinny models. Amen! Denise Hatton, Chief Executive for YMCA England & Wales, a founding partner of the Be Real Campaign for body confidence, said that these are steps in the right direction. While some people are naturally slim, the average woman in the UK wears a size 16 and the average woman in the US wears a size 8/10. It’s time we see more diversity on the catwalk that truthfully reflects our society, with all its shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and more. The two French firms are making the move after a law banning ultra-thin models went into effect in the country in May. Those who break the French law face fines of up to 75,000 euros or jail sentences of up to
six months. Models must also have to present a valid medical certificate that they are fit to work. The French companies wanted to make “a real difference in the working conditions of fashion models.” Some say it “oversimplifies the issue” to suggest the fashion industry was the main cause of body image problems. This is true, but many young girls look at these models as role models and as the image in which they need to look to feel accepted. It’s about time this change is taking place. Following are some celebrities that are helping this cause by maintaining their “healthy” weight and proving to young girls and women you are still beautiful at any size: Kate Upton, Adele, Lena Dunhan, Kelly Clarkson, Melissa McCarthy, Mariah Carey, Mindy Kaling, America Ferrera, Sofia Vergara, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Kardashian, Christina Aguilera, Christina Hendricks, and Robyn Lawley Many of these women have spoken out against the notion that “skinny is sexy” or “skinny is beautiful.” A couple of them were called fat, but went on to appear in “Real Women Have Curves,” and were proud to do so. And many of these women are mesmerizing. Anyone who thinks differently is blind or jealous. One actress I have always loved is Drew Barrymore, and Drew has always refused to bow down to Hollywood’s “ideal” beauty standard. Another one I admire is Jennifer Lawrence, who was told she was too fat to be famous. She can now raise her Oscar and tell everyone where
to go! We all know Kim Kardashian, love her or hate her, her curves are as famous as she is. Robyn Lawley was the first to be a plus size model to debut in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. This was a breakthrough. I am so happy to see models that are average or even “heavy” featured in some very popular clothing magazines. This is the message we need to be sending. Beauty comes from the inside out and your size does not define you.
“Loving your body only when it feels and looks good is like saying you only love your kids when they are well behaved.” “The most alluring thing for a woman to have is confidence.”

The Four Winds Senior Care Consulting Blows into the State!
Family-owned business has long history and experience in the industry.
By Mark Berger
Jen Cardullo Burns is someone who takes immense pride in her work. For years, she has worked in the senior care realm by helping families with their senior care, managed care, Alzheimer’s/memory care and assisted living needs. Her special set of skills enables her to aid people to get the necessary attention to be functional and productive. After years of this work, Burns decide it was time to go home again…sort of. Together with her parents, Paul and Joann Cardullo, they formed Four Winds Senior Care Consulting based in Narragansett but working virtually statewide to further support those needing direction in this arena. Despite the newness of the company, Burns said there is a lot of work between the three principals. “Paul has been an Executive Director for one facility based in Massachusetts for 17 years and Joann is well known as an Executive Director in Rhode Island as well as a Registered Nurse,” said Burns, who has worked as a Sales and Marketing Director at numerous senior care centers in Central RI. “Although they are retired, Paul and Joann were still looking for something to do. They have worked in this

space for several decades, and in that time, gained a wealth of knowledge that is unmatched. It will be a pleasure serving our current and future clients.” The company name comes from the spot from which Jen and her family spent their summers growing up as a child. It was her grandmother’s summer beach spot on Scarborough Beach. While her parents were busy updating their business model, Jen was busy distributing advice from colleagues who had questions regarding their situation. From those points formed a plan for Jen, Joann and Paul to pool their experience and resources together and form this new endeavor. They will serve clients throughout the state and are certified to practice in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. What they offer is a full-service suite of services. Besides the numerous platforms previously mentioned, they can also act as an interim executive director while a search for a permanent replacement gets hired. They can oversee annual surveys of the residents and the staff to stay compliant with the state and federal guidelines. Provide initial admission assessments, re-assessments and other various nursing services. They also offer LGBT and memory/Alzheimer’s care training for those facilities.
They also work on generating placements for their clients. That means working with families on the best course of action would be for their loved ones. That can take time and effort, much of which families do not have in abundance. Burns added that having an extra set of eyes and ears can make a difference. “Moving a loved one into a new facility can be emotional for everyone,” she said. “There are a lot of feelings about the best interests of the loved one, but it can ultimately become a smooth transition if the person in question cannot live alone anymore. The move into a facility should be for their health, safety and piece of mind for everyone involved. “Some people don’t realize they need help because they have been in their homes for too long,” Burns noted. They fulfill requests for independent living (“many people want to stay in their homes for as long as possible,” Jen added). In addition, resident care, determining admission assessments and what their needs and wants are all part of the initial evaluation. This is so the process can run smoothly and with little drama. Jen has over 20 years of experience in various areas of senior longterm care. She worked as a CNA in Skilled Nursing Facilities, homecare, hospice, Assisted Living and is a licensed Assisted Living Administrator. She is affiliated with several long-term care groups and organizations and serves in various volunteer capacities. Paul has been in the healthcare industry since 1995, serving in many positions in the assisted living community from Dining Room Manage to Executive Director. He has a natural ability to overcome obstacles, which have led to his success in turning around problem communities. Among Paul’s many accomplishments include successfully opened three assisted living communities and overseeing the rehabilitation of three assisted living communities. Joann has over 35 years of experience in the health care management industry. Throughout her career, she has served in many positions in various levels of healthcare. Most of her career was spent in caring for our elderly population from a geriatric nurse to Executive Director/Administrator to Senior Vice President of many successful assisted living communities. Her knowledge, abilities and kind and caring personality have contributed to her multiple successes. Smart Moves to Manage an Inheritance By: Carrie McPherson I Losing a loved one can be a painful experience. Even when expected, the finality of death can be difficult to comprehend. It’s no wonder that people who are grieving often feel overwhelmed and unable to process information with the same mental clarity that they have under more normal circumstances. Adding financial decisions into the mix can further complicate matters. For many people, even the welcome news that they are the beneficiaries of a loved one’s estate can bring waves of sadness and uncertainty. If you are set to receive money or other assets from a loved one who has passed away, you may benefit from the counsel of a financial advisor, estate attorney and tax expert who can help you determine the best course of action to wisely manage the gift you’ve been given. Here are some factors you might want to consider with their help:
The form of the inheritance
First, consider the form of inheritance you received:
Cash – if the assets you inherited are in the form of cash, there tend to be few complications. There is no federal tax on inherited amounts, though a handful of states do apply an inheritance tax. A life insurance settlement – if the deceased named you as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the payment you received is generally not subject to tax. You also may have the option to have the benefit paid out to you over a number of years rather than in one lump sum.
A retirement plan – if you inherited an IRA or an indivi-
dual’s workplace retirement plan, you will have 10 years to withdraw all of the money (this time limit does not apply to spouses or minor children). Failure to do so can result in a significant penalty. Taxes are due on distributions from traditional IRAs or workplace plans.
Appreciated stock or other assets – if you inherited assets such as stock or real estate, the cost basis for the asset is stepped-up to the value at the time of the grantor’s passing. That can result in a major tax savings when you sell the asset. Thinking it through
Particularly if you’re in a state of heightened emotion, don’t feel rushed into making decisions about what to do with the money. Slow down, seek advice and consider your options within the context of your overall financial situation and goals for the future.
If you were in a comfortable financial position before you received the inheritance, perhaps you’d like to spend some of the money on a family trip or to purchase a major item in memory of your loved one. On the other hand, if you want to put part or all of the money toward funding your major financial goals, there are myriad ways to do so and honor the legacy of your loved one in the process. Perhaps you want to set up a 529 plan to help pay for your children’s college education in memory of the deceased. Alternatively, the money may be useful in making a down payment on a home or a cash infusion into your diversified portfolio that you’ll one day lean on in retirement. Whatever the case may be, consider working with a trusted financial advisor who can help you set it up in a with your long-term goals and financial plan in mind.
Expect bumps in the road
It’s not uncommon to experience some challenges or complications if an inheritance has arrived or is coming your way. This is all the more reason to consider consulting with a financial advisor, estate and tax professional to make sure you understand what you’ve received and how to best put it to work. They can bring a sense of clarity and calm that you may be in need of as you grieve the loss of your loved one. Carrie A. Robert V. Russo, Attorney-at-Law Personal service for your personal injuries By Jennifer Coates For Attorney Robert Russo, there is no such thing as a day of rest. Every day is a push towards some goal, whether it is to cross the finish line of a marathon or to resolve a tough legal case for a client or to reach consensus on an issue affecting his constituents as a Town Council President. He pours every ounce of his energy, expertise, and experience into everything he does, and that includes his devotion to his family as well. Russo’s motto might best be summed up in these few words: “Its all about performance, not promises.” It’s all about performance. Attorney Russo has practiced law for over 31 years, and he knows his stuff. All it takes is a quick glance around his office to see all the accolades and honors he has received after a lifelong commitment to serving his community. A quick perusal of his practice’s informative website shows the breadth of the work that is accomplished at this longstanding and highly regarded practice in Providence. The law office of Robert V. Russo makes every effort to be inclusive, accepting cases that other practices have rejected because they are deemed to be too time-consuming, too minor to merit their attention or not profitable enough. He and his close-knit team work especially hard to reach and to accommodate those who live in more underserved communities. Russo knows that he could not do his job without the able assistance of this talented and loyal staff. Their combined years of experience, their dedication to the important work that they do, their “team mentality,” and their laser-focused commitment to the people they represent are invaluable and unmatched. It is a winning combination. The staff members here are also bi-lingual, from Sue Martinez, Russo’s office manager for over 20 years, and Imary Alicea, his Assistant Manager for over 15 years, to every other key employee. Some are even multi-lingual. In our diverse state, this is a critical piece to the kind of fair, equitable, honest, and professional representation this law firm is best known for. words that describe this busy attorney and this busy practice. It matters to Attorney Russo and his team that people who come to them feel validated and that the challenges they face are personal. From the very first call, that client ~ from whatever walk of life he or she is on ~is not just a name on a file, they are a real person. Once the facts are collected in that initial call, a face-to-face meeting is arranged with Russo. This is the start of a working relationship that not only extends through the claim’s resolution, but often well beyond. As an attorney for over three decades, Russo has represented multiple generations of families. They return to his practice, not only because of his success rate, but also because of the treatment they experience as his clients. What brings these clients to the law firm of Attorney Russo in the first place? The answer is simple - anything that causes a personal injury. This covers the gamut of everything from “slip and falls” to motor vehicle accidents to medical malpractice, work-related injuries, and even the loss of life and limb. After an accident or injury, there is often a period of uncertainty and confusion. Questions often overwhelm individuals injured due to an act of recklessness or negligence. They may as, what are my rights? Who do I turn to? How can I receive compensation to pay my mounting medical bills? Survive a period of loss of wages? 5 Steps to Effectively Manage Today’s Market Volatility By Edward Pontarelli Jr.
For example, if you are within five years of retirement, you may want to consider scaling back the level of risk in your portfolio to protect against the impact of a major downturn occurring at the wrong time – just when you need the money for retirement.
#3 – Stay properly diversified Once you’ve determined your risk tolerance, the next consideration is diversification. Maintain an appropriate balance of stocks, bonds, and other types of investments. In addition, make certain you don’t have a concentrated position. As a rule of thumb, no individual holding should represent more than 20% of your asset mix. This includes company stock you may hold in your workplace retirement plan.
#4 – Continue or expand systematic investments The year 2022 has presented challenges for investors, with stock markets experiencing significant volatility and bond markets showing unpredictable movement. Much of this can be attributed to external events. The most notable triggers are Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an extended period of higher inflation, and a shift in monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Times like these can cause anxiety for investors. As you watch markets move up and down, sometimes dramatically in a day, it’s natural to wonder whether it’s time to make changes to your investments. Before you do so, it’s important to think about your finances in the context of the broader picture and seek advice from a professional who can help you evaluate what actions, if any, you should take. Here are five tips to get started.
#1 – Don’t let daily events overly influence your decision making It is easy to become overwhelmed with the headlines of the day, particularly if seemingly bad news is piling up and having a negative impact on the markets. Keep in mind that we’ve seen many periods where markets suffered sharp downturns. Yet historically, markets as a whole have always recovered any ground lost during short-term setbacks. Headlines come and go, but building an effective, long-term strategy should remain your primary focus.
#2 – Re-assess your risk tolerance If you’re feeling uneasy about market volatility, you may need to take another look at the level of investment risk with which you are comfortable. Periods of market volatility are often a true test of the ability to withstand temporary setbacks to your portfolio. Another consideration is your time horizon. 42 Shop In RI
While volatile markets can be concerning, they shouldn’t impact your ongoing investment plans. If you make regular contributions to your workplace savings plan or other accounts, it’s best to maintain those investments. If markets go down, your regular contribution will purchase more shares of the investment. That could benefit you over the long run. If you have the ability to save more through systematic investing, don’t be hesitant to boost those amounts you sock away regularly.
#5 – Review your strategy with your financial advisor It can be helpful to discuss your financial situation in the context of today’s markets with your financial professional. They will be able to help you assess your current position, if your portfolio carries an appropriate level of risk and whether there may be investment opportunities you should consider today. Having a conversation about the best way to approach today’s markets can make a difference and can help keep you on track to achieve your most important goals. Ask An Expert Popcorn Ceilings
My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting(www.LopcoContracting. com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! Now and then we get calls asking for help with a ‘popcorn ceiling’. “Help” will typically mean either how to help get rid of them entirely or how to paint them without damaging them.
If prepared for properly – everything removed from the room and/or covered extensively – the newer popcorn ceilings can actually have their popcorn removed by being carefully wet down and then scraped off (as the popcorn will come off and get everywhere and be extraordinarily dusty if it is not wet down first).
Popcorn ceilings are ceilings where, for lack of a better way of describing them, there are little, tiny bumps scattered about the ceiling (‘popcorn’).
After this process is done, the ceiling may need a procedure in place to be skimmed over in order to smooth out the ceiling.
NOT to be confused with ‘textured’ ceilings, ‘popcorn’ ceilings have been used throughout their existence when building or renovating a home as a more inexpensive means of finishing a ceiling vs. finishing it with a plastered ‘swirl’ finish or using a technique providing a ‘smooth’ finish.
The procedure would most likely look something like: - Prime the ceiling - Patch the ceiling wherever needed - Sand the patches appropriately - Spot prime the patches - Then keep repeating until the surface reaches the “smoothness” that you are looking for
Popcorn ceilings that are older (example: done in the 1950s, 1960s, etc.) tend to have their ‘popcorn’ firmly in place and while being easy to maintain, can be a bit more difficult to get rid of (if so desired) than newer popcorn ceilings. More modern popcorn ceilings are much more challenging to paint (as when doing so a good portion of the ‘popcorn’ can be pulled off on your paint roller and are best done by having their finish ‘sprayed’ on by a professional), but are a bit easier to convert by having the popcorn removed if that is what you would like to do. The best way to get rid of an older popcorn ceiling is to either hang a new ceiling over it (the most common approach we take is hanging over it with 3/8” blueboard and plastering over the blueboard to the finish one aspires to). Sometimes folks elect to try to skim over the popcorn with a process allowing them to smooth it out, I am not a fan of this however as in my mind, no matter how stable the older popcorn ceiling appears, in the back of my mind I am always worried of the new skimmed over coating somehow coming off at some point due to some type of bonding issue with the ceiling it was put over. Of course, the other way you can convert the ceiling is by taking down the existing ceiling and hanging a new ceiling up altogether, the demo in this method however, can be quite messy. Speaking of messy… If working to get rid of a newer popcorn ceiling, a chaotic situation can certainly ensue. While similar to the older popcorn ceiling conversion, the path of either hanging a new ceiling over the existing ceiling entirely or removing the existing ceiling and putting up a new ceiling altogether are applicable here as well, there is also another technique that can be used. 54 Shop In RI
Popcorn ceilings are certainly something we run into fairly often and there are various ways to help people out achieve their preferred finish. Depending on the age of the ceiling and the desired result, the methodology for getting people there absolutely ranges from “not too bad” of a project to SUPER intense!!

THE TRADITIONS AND HISTORY OF A
TYPICAL AMERICAN EASTER by Julia Romano
The best family traditions result from bringing different generations together to create unique, enjoyable customs that will be passed on and continued for many years to come. Easter is a wonderful time to celebrate family and to make those traditions to create lifelong, cherished memories. Easter is a holiday when “Brunch” is commonplace and a popular family tradition throughout the country. While some prefer to experience going out to a restaurant that offers a brunch menu, others choose to create Easter Brunch at home with sweet and savory foods that will satisfy everyone’s palate, combining multiple breakfast and lunch dishes. In addition to Easter Brunch, the holiday has a variety of other traditions, many of which continue to be revisited each year. As a matter of fact, each decade, going back to the 1950s, people have been celebrating Easter traditions that are still favored today because of their popularity and how they continue to bring families together for joyful Easter festivities. In the 1950s, remember when, for example, dressing the entire family in their finest clothes was common? After going to church, the kids often had Easter egg hunts, followed by a grand brunch with the entire family including moms and dad, aunts, uncles, lots of cousins, and of course, the beloved maternal and paternal grandparents. Women, during this era, got “all dolled up,” with matching gloves and dresses, while the gentlemen looked dapper in their full suits. The entire family dressed impeccably and then enjoyed their experience of the “American Dream,” as the little girls donned Easter bonnets, and the children were in awe of overflowing Easter baskets. 66
In addition, candy factories came about in the ‘50s, which added an extra boost to the Easter bunny’s chocolates, as women employees worked overtime to ensure an adequate supply of the scrumptious candy treats. Another fun tradition starting in the 1950s that stood the test of time is dyeing eggs. This activity is still a popular, fun activity for kids of all ages.
The 1990s continued on with photos of the Easter Bunny with kids sitting on his lap becoming even more popular. This era may be when Easter started to become a little more focused on the commercial side of the holiday. Easter Bunny baskets were overly filled with even more candy, along with the addition of trinkets and toys, and even larger gifts in many cases.
Do you remember when in the 1960s, women wore bold pink and red skirts and matching jackets, making a lovely appearance? You may also remember that during this period, many families coordinated the clothes of all of the children, an adorable practice that continued for some time. The ‘60s was an era when Catholic families attending Easter morning mass was never a question, as families showed off their sharp attire, adding accessories to the little ones, such as pocketbooks and gloves.
While most families continue to celebrate with a special Easter brunch or family dinner, there have been more and more additions, and in some cases, changes, to how people enjoy the holiday in today’s era. For some, casual get-togethers have replaced more formal dinners, with Easter activities that offer a new spin on classic holiday traditions, including adult Easter egg hunts, decked out Easter baskets, dedicated Easter egg decorating parties, and even some children receiving a variety of other “gifts” from several family members, in addition to the basket from the Bunny, making it seem more like Christmas, than the Easter we all remember from years gone by.
For those raised in the ‘70s, there may be memories of gardens with blooming, colorful flowers. In addition, potluck dinners became popular, as families celebrated together, while each contributed different dishes to the grand meal. Young girls were dressed sweetly, with floral and pastel colored dresses, while the young lads donned a suit and tie, just like the family dad. If you ever wondered when “ham” became the main course of an Easter meal, it was in the 1980s. Children in the ‘80s continued to dye Easter eggs to pass out to family members, and of course, a special one was saved for the beloved Easter Bunny. Do you remember when the greatly popular Easter egg hunt became a tradition in the 1980s, when children discovered the fun and excitement of running through the yard, searching for candy-filled eggs, hidden by the Easter Bunny, and filling up a basket to collect as many as they could? And what about those adorable photos of children sitting on the Easter Bunny’s lap that became popular in the ‘80s? The Bunny could be found at area shopping centers, particularly in malls, where the kiddies stood in an often long line and anxiously awaited a turn to meet and take a photo, which was developed on the spot.
Although it’s exciting to see what may come next, I must say that I miss the simplistic Easter of the former generations, when dressing in your “Sunday Best” and going to mass were at the forefront of the holiday. I also revel in the memories of coloring eggs on Easter eve, and after mass on Easter morning, running through my backyard in haste and excitement, along with my siblings and all of my cousins, to collect dozens of those pastel eggs, each filled with a surprise, followed by eating a huge meal and endless desserts. All in all, I would never trade my own experiences of Easter from my own childhood in the 1970s era that have resulted in lifelong, heartwarming memories and of which special family traditions have been carried on to my own children.

Spring into a certified used car! By Mark Berger The need for certified, pre-owned vehicles continues to remain high. Many factors are negatively impacting auto dealers, who struggle to meet customer needs.
Toyota of Smithfield asks vehicle owners to consider bringing in their older vehicles—no matter their condition—for more fuelefficient models. General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for inventory should bring in their used car to take advantage of several dealer incentives.

“Anyone trading in either their used or certified pre-owned cars will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There isn’t a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more than its ever going to be worth.” The dealership has back orders for weeks and sometimes months on certain makes and models. Durrani said the market has been “pretty crazy”. With low inventory on their lots, announcing trade-ins bonuses has become critical. Durrani said people currently have the means to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the very few remaining used cars. Families receiving income tax refunds for may stimulate the economy and the need. The ask remains because of raised requests. “We are appealing to the public for used vehicles. Simply put, we don’t have the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said. To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot. “We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” he added. The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Those who attend will be expected to follow social guidelines but also have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives. Check with the dealership for dates and times. The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front and the best available leasing and financing terms up front. Durrani said this is just part of the all-around, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication. Schedule an appointment by calling them 401-723-0962 or on their website at www.toyotaofsmithfield.com.
