Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails One of our favorite restaurants here in Rhode Island is Fluke Newport in…well…Newport. We’ve dined there for years, but big changes happened last summer when they hired a new chef. We met Chef Eddie Montalvo just after he had arrived at Fluke, and we were impressed with his new menu.

I went to Twitter for some help. Since I follow a number of chefs, I asked the question: I’m cooking for a real chef for the first time. What’s the #1 tip you can give me? Only one chef answered, but it was none other than Andrew Zimmern, and he said simply: “Be yourself.” Be myself? Yeah…I think I can fake that!!!! So I started thinking…Chef Eddie works with seafood all day at Fluke. Skip that. He’s Italian and makes amazing homemade pasta. Skip that. What do I love to cook and do pretty well…? Barbecue!

I have a beautiful grass-fed Angus beef New Zealand brisket in my freezer. That’s what I need to make! A simple, comfort-food meal. Barbecued brisket…twice-baked sweet potatoes…a big old salad…and as an appetizer: my no-fail recipe for Oysters Rock-aFellow! (OK, I had to get a little seafood in there.)
When I smoke my brisket low-and-slow in my smoker, I use a coffee steak rub that I developed a couple of years ago. It gives a deep, rich crust to the meat that is just fantastic.
30-31 Suicide Prevention Awareness
Depending on the size of the brisket, you might need to double the recipe.
61 Financial Tips from Ameriprise
If the brisket is frozen, I like to thaw it a couple of days ahead of cooking it, rubbing it down with the coffee rub, and placing it in the fridge for about 24 hours to rest. I bring it out about an hour before smoking, to let the meat come back to room temperature, and then I place it in the smoker for about 12 hours at 225 degrees, smoking it with hickory wood. When it’s done, I remove it from the smoker, and wrap in foil and let it rest at least 30 minutes before slicing diagonally against the grain of the meat. If I’m not serving it right away, I place the wrapped brisket in the oven at the lowest setting, about 150 degrees, just to keep it warm.
34-35 Style Profile Lolita Healy
When I’m ready to serve, I always slice the brisket on the bias, against the grain of the meat.

Planning an EU Trip? Starting in 2021, You’ll Need a Visa The luxury of hopping on a plane for a European holiday with just a passport in hand will soon be gone for US citizens. A European Union announcement notes that, starting in 2021, Americans will need to also have a visa if they want to travel to the Schengen Area, 26 EU countries that allow people to move freely between nations, per CNN. To receive a European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) visa, US citizens will require a current passport, an email address, and a credit or debit card. The reasoning behind the new requirement: “Similar to other countries and regions in the world, Europe has recently decided to improve their security level to avoid any further problems with illegal migration and terrorism,” per the ETIAS site. A full list of the countries that will soon require the visa, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, can be found here. Americans can still visit the UK and Ireland with just a passport. Previously, US citizens could stay in the EU for up to 90 days without a visa; the ETIAS visa is valid for three years.
Talking Gargoyle Lights Up Denver Airport
No Nations Are Left Flying the Boeing 737 Max 8 US had been the last country left, until POTUS signed order
The US stood alone in its refusal to ground the Boeing 737 Max 8, but President Trump has now taken action. “Those planes are grounded effective immediately,” he told reporters at the White House, explaining that he had signed an order to ground the planes. “The safety of the American people, of all people, is our paramount concern.” That means no nations are left flying the planes, USA Today reports. Earlier, Canada’s transport minister announced the country was closing its airspace to the aircraft, which has been involved in two major fatal crashes in less than five months: Indonesia’s Lion Air crash in October and the Ethiopian Airlines crash. Both the US and Canadian bans also extend to the larger Max 9, CNN reports; Trump said, per CNN, that any Max 8 or 9 planes currently in the air would be ordered to land. 4 ShopInRI
“Did you have to buy an extra seat for your hat, sir?” Visitors to Denver International Airport, including the man in a cowboy hat who was asked that question, are being surprised by a seriously chatty gargoyle. The talking statue has been installed in the center of the airport to “throw shade, tell jokes, and confuse the hell out of travelers,” as Mashable puts it. The stunt is part of the airport’s commemoration of its 24th anniversary, notes the Denver Post. The airport is linked to some elaborate conspiracy theories, and the gargoyle was playing along. “Welcome to Illuminati Headquarters … I mean, Denver International Airport,” it says to one passerby. See the video here. As an airport tweet puts it, “DEN not only got wiser, we also got a little weirder.”
Meet Armando, the $1.4M Pigeon
Racing bird likely to spend his next years making babies Someone just paid $1.4 million for a pigeon—but not just any pigeon. Armando is the “best Belgian long-distance pigeon of all time,” according to auction house Pipa, which oversaw a bidding war between two buyers from China, where pigeon racing is popular among the wealthy. The previous record price for a racing pigeon was roughly $427,000, per the BBC. But “this pigeon has a race record that has never been matched by any other pigeon,” Pipa founder Nikolaas Gyselbrecht tells the Press Association. “In [soccer] terms you have Messi and Ronaldo—it’s that level.” Still, the online auction price may seem high considering Armando, who turns 5 this year, is now in retirement. Per the BBC, it’s likely the pigeon’s new owner will breed him—he has about five years left in that department—and then race his offspring. As Time reports, “bird owners can win plenty of their money back by betting on the correct winged competitor, with prizes in the tens of thousands of dollars.”

Hope You Didn’t Have Any Old Music on MySpace More than a decade ago, MySpace reigned supreme in social media. And the company now has bad news for all those who uploaded music and other media to their accounts: It’s all gone. “As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from MySpace,” says a company statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience.” The loss covers everything going back to the company’s launch in 2003, reports the BBC. Tech writer Graham Cluley takes MySpace to task for not having a backup and calls this an “appalling cultural loss,” given that MySpace had more than 50 million songs. The new statement is the bad-news result, and some think it’s a little fishy. “I’m deeply skeptical this was an accident,” writes Andy Baio, who helped begin Kickstarter. “Flagrant incompetence may be bad PR, but it still sounds better than ‘we can’t be bothered with the effort and cost of migrating and hosting 50 million old MP3s.’” Regardless, Boing Boing notes that the gaffe offers up a useful lesson: Don’t rely on such platforms (like Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr) to function as a personal archive. Use other services created for that purpose, or make your own backups.
Huge Mega Millions Winner Decides to Share
An unidentified South Carolina woman is giving some to Greenville An incredibly lucky South Carolina woman is sharing her jackpot with city, state, and charity. The winner of an $878 million Mega Millions payout has already given some of her winnings to charities including the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia and the Red Cross relief fund for recent Alabama tornado victims, CBS News reports. Now she’s giving some to Greenville, where she happened to be visiting when she dropped by a KC Mart to buy the winning ticket, per WCSC-TV. Some will go to South Carolina as well. The lottery winner took 131 days to claim her ticket as she talked to financial planners and lawyers, partly to help her manage the windfall. She also chose to accept a single sum of $878 million rather than 30 years of payments totaling $1.5 billion. ShopInRI 5

from power, Venezuela has had a hard time getting its collateral back and the country is struggling with shrinking gold reserves. Last month, Citi was in talks with the US Treasury Department about how to handle the matter, and said that Juan Guaido—the opposition leader recognized by most Western nations as Venezuela’s legitimate president—was asking Citi not to take possession of the gold. His team’s attempt to negotiate a 120-day extension of the gold repurchase deadline with Citi was unsuccessful, but Bloomberg notes he may eventually be given the extra $258 million.

SLOW-COOKED COFFEE-RUBBED BRISKET Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails One of our favorite restaurants here in Rhode Island is Fluke Newport in…well…Newport. We’ve dined there for years, but big changes happened last summer when they hired a new chef. We met Chef Eddie Montalvo just after he had arrived at Fluke, and we were impressed with his new menu. We came back for another visit just over a month ago, and meeting Eddie again, we thought we would invite him and his family to our home someday for a visit.
Ingredients: 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon Kosher salt 1 tablespoon ground coffee (use your favorite) 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1 teaspoon granulated onion 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
Well, that “someday” is tomorrow, and the reality that I’m going to be cooking for a real chef for the first time in my life is making me a bit nervous!
Depending on the size of the brisket, you might need to double the recipe. When I’m ready to serve, I always slice the brisket on the bias, against the grain of the meat. ShopInRI 11
RIVER FALLS RESTAURANT PUTS THE “SPECIAL” IN SPECIAL EVENTS By Mark Berger
A view of the Blackstone River. A chance to hold any number of festive occasions in one of their four banquet halls. Several weekday specials available. An opportunity to have family-style chicken or the beloved Ma Glockner’s Chicken on Sundays. These are just some of the benefits of dining at the Woonsocket-based River Falls Restaurant. Located at 74 S. Main Street, they serve family favorites, as well as catered events outside of the restaurant. General Manager and Function Planner, Stacey Brouillard, said the location, food quality at reasonable prices and wordof-mouth referrals have helped the restaurant remain successful for the past 12+ years. “I mostly work with people who are experiencing a happy time in their lives,” said Brouillard. “They are planning baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other major life events, so it’s a real pleasure to work with such people. I end up working with many families who will only come to River Falls to host their family functions.” River Falls Restaurant has undergone significant changes since its beginnings in 1999, when local entrepreneur, Gary Fernandes, purchased the building from the city of Woonsocket for $1. Since then, he has invested more than $3 million into the restaurant, which opened its doors in December 2006. Stacey also shared that the restaurant’s continuing success and brains behind the operation are that of Managing Partner, Dave Gouin. Stacey and Dave have worked hand in hand together at the restaurant for the past 11 years. 12 ShopInRI
Brouillard, who grew up in Burrillville and graduated from Rhode Island College, has a long history in the restaurant industry. She worked at her mother’s popular eatery in Woonsocket growing up, starting at the young age of 11, and moved on from there after she graduated from college. She then worked in new home sales for a few years until unexpectedly having Fernandes, her uncle, turn to her with a job proposal at the restaurant. River Falls was just starting out and he felt that Dave, with the addition of Stacey, would be the “dream team” to run his operation. Eleven years later, she finds the job both rewarding and intense at times. She added that hosting events are one of the restaurant’s primary attractions. She said when functions are peaking, she could be planning upwards of 20 events per week for both in house and outside catering events. They have four function rooms located on the first and third floors that can hold small and larger parties. The Blackstone Room on the first floor holds parties up to 70 guests and is handicapped accessible. The Wine Room is the most intimate location with an 18-guest max. Both The Riverview Lounge, holding up to 140 guests, and The Tavern Room, holding up to 160 guests, are on the third floor of the restaurant, boasting beautiful views. Stacey said evening functions can begin any time after 5:30 PM, and the daytime events often start as early as 10:00 AM and every half-hour thereafter.
Brouillard also cited the numerous promotions the restaurant has during the week. She noted the popular “Burger & Brew-HaHa,” where patrons can get any burger and a draft beer for $10 every Tuesday. There is also “The Original Wacky Wednesday,” where $35 gets dinner for two people, which includes a bottle of wine or pitcher of beer, a choice of soup or salad, two entrees, coffee, and dessert. Those who opt not to include the alcohol pay only $24. Every Thursday enjoy the “AllYou-Can-Eat Ribfest,” which includes both prime rib and baby back ribs. Right after Christmas, the restaurant starts their “Winter Wonderland” promo that is a huge hit among their guests and staff, as the restaurant over a few short months awards their patrons over $50,000 in prizes!!! She said there are a lot of people who come back every week to redeem their envelope hoping for one of the big prizes! “Everyone who dines with us after the holidays receives a sealed envelope with an expiration date, which they cannot open until they come back to the restaurant,” Stacey said. “There is a prize/something free in EVERY
single envelope given out that the diners can enjoy upon their next visit. It can be anything from a free appetizer, free entrée or free dessert. We also put lots of gift cards in the envelopes that range from $25 to $500. All of our customers leave very happy at this time of year.” One of the most beautiful spots of the restaurant opens in the late spring/early summer, when their outdoor patio opens. Guests can dine outside at the bar or at a table overlooking the views of the majestic Blackstone River. River Falls Restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM. They are closed on Monday. Reservations can be made for parties of any size by calling 401-235-9026. Functions and other events can be made either by calling the restaurant or by emailing Stacey Brouillard directly at Stacey.riverfalls@gmail. com. More information may be found by visiting their website at www.riverfallsri.com and on their Facebook page.

Pawtuxet Village Continues to Prosper with Top Notch Thriving Eateries By Julia Romano
In Rhode Island, the area that occupies both the northern section of Cranston and the southern section of Warwick is called Pawtuxet Village. As the oldest village in New England, it was originally occupied by the Sononoce Pawtuxet tribe in the early 1600s, who gave it its name, which means “Little Falls” in the native language. The tribe lived on the banks of the Pawtuxet River and used Pawtuxet Neck to provide them with many of their needs. In 1636, Roger Williams, founder of Little Rhody, purchased the property extending south from Providence to the Pawtuxet River, and the founder of Warwick, Samuel Gorton, purchased the land south of the Pawtuxet River. Since the 18th century, residents of Pawtuxet Village made valuable use of its harbor, as they built one of the country’s top shipping ports and earned success in coastal trading. Each year in June, the Gaspee Day Parade is a celebration of the Pawtuxet Village harbor area, as it was the place where Rhode Island patriots took the first step toward military action against the British enemy schooner, HMS Gaspee. In the early 1800s, the area changed from a primary shipping port to a prosperous textile mill village by Christopher and William Rhodes, who then controlled the area. It was in the late 19th century when the Rhodes family developed one of Rhode Island’s top attractions, the famous Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet casino, dance hall, and canoe center, an icon which is still a thriving business today. Due, in part, to the numerous historic houses and buildings to tour, a visit to the current Pawtuxet Village will prove to be one of the most charming areas in Rhode Island. The commercial center 16 ShopInRI
of the neighborhood is where Broad Street and Narragansett Parkway meet near the Pawtuxet Bridge. The densely developed residential sections are located east and west of the village’s shops and restaurants. Many houses to the east have water views of Pawtuxet Cove and the ocean. Pawtuxet Village has the beauty of Upper Narragansett Bay as well as the cozy environment of the area businesses. Stroll the area to take advantage of the charming and quaint village and all it has to offer. In addition to the historic attraction of Pawtuxet Village, there are many eateries that draw people from all over the state and beyond. Below is a listing of some of those eateries.

THE BREAD BOX BAKERY By Julia Romano In 2019, new businesses have opened their doors up and down Mineral Spring Avenue during what has been referred to as the “Renaissance of North Providence.” Among these new businesses is a bakery where you can find delicious freshly made bakery items, unlike any others you will find in the area. Bread Box Baking Company is a small establishment located at 1101 Mineral Spring Avenue (in the Marieville section), BUT, don’t let its size fool you. George and Deb Brown are the proud owners and operators of Bread Box. Together, with their baker, Lizzy, and other staff, they work hard to delight customers with fresh and flavorful artisan breads and craft pastries that people rave about. Below are some questions asked of George to give readers an understanding of why he opened Bread Box Baking Company, the journey it took to get there, and information about the products he sells, which are created by a baker who he and his wife Deb, rely on and trust to use her skills and passion to make delicious products that will turn new customers into regulars. What is the history behind the opening of Bread Box Baking Company? In January 2016, I happened upon a bakery that was just about to go out of business and an idea started to form in my mind. Coming from a business and sales background, opening a bakery had an appeal that I couldn’t let go of. The idea had to be tabled, however, because approximately one month later, I suffered a life-changing heart attack. Fast forward three years; a good friend of mine approached me with a location that he thought would be perfect for the bakery I had considered opening prior to my heart attack. In December 2018, Bread Box Baking Company opened its doors. 20 ShopInRI
What is your personal involvement in the Bread Box business? I co-own the business with my wife, Deborah. We have been together over 35 years and she, at first, was hesitant thinking we are so close to retirement, but my persistence and passion soon warmed her to the idea, and she acquiesced. Is this your first experience owning and operating a bakery? Operating a bakery is a first for us; however, we have owned and operated several businesses over the past twenty-five years and although the product is different, the basic business premise is the same. We concluded, if the product is amazing and the service good, we can be successful. Our product is amazing, and our service is top notch. When did you first become interested in baking? Our baker, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Fink has been baking practically her whole life and this is her story...“I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic since I was 5 years old, so I never really got to eat any baked goods. When I was in middle school, I would wake up early for school and would watch “Martha Stewart Living” and I quickly became her biggest fan. In 8th grade, I was given a Kitchen-Aid mixer, aprons and all kinds of baking stuff for Christmas. By 9th grade, I decided I was going to Johnson & Wales University. When I told my private, Catholic, all girls college prep guidance counselor I wanted to be a baker, she basically said “no.” But I was determined and if I set my mind on a goal I don’t give up. I was accepted to JWU and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. Since that time, I learned alot about the bakery business as I worked at Wrights Dairy Farm, Wildflour, Foremost Baking Co., and Seven Stars Bakery Productions.
What is the difference between an artisanal bakery and one that is not? Artisanal bakeries feature 100% handcrafted breads and pastries. Lizzy mixes, ferments, shapes, proof, and bakes every loaf from start to finish. We do not use frozen or premade items like many other bakeries do. What is the definition of “craft” pastries? Craft pastries are small-batch handcrafted “works of art,” as opposed to assembly line, pre-made pastries that all look the same. What products are sold at Bread Box? We sell artisan breads such as, Olive Thyme, Cranberry Walnut, Blue Cheese Walnut, Jalapeno Cheddar, Cinnamon Raisin and many others. We also sell small-batch pastries like croissants, brownies, danish, a variety of decadent cookies and award-winning pretzels. We have just added our own pizza dough to the menu based on suggestions from our customers. What sets Bread Box apart from other bakeries? The Bread Box is different because everything is made from scratch, using wholesome, natural ingredients with no preservatives. The flavors of scones and breads are ever changing along with seasonal and holiday specials. If berries are on sale, we have Berry Crisp and/or Berry Turnovers. Liz is inspired by products she tastes at other venues and sometimes is inspired by life itself. She then creates her own version of the item and sometimes surprises herself. She has an artistic flair that shines through her creations.
What are some of your most popular items? Some of our most popular products include: Olive Thyme Stick, Jalapeno Cheddar and Focaccia breads, cinnamon buns and chocolate croissants, to name just a few. Why did you choose North Providence as the location for Bread Box? My wife and I grew up in Providence and had many school friends from North Providence, so the area was very familiar and when the opportunity presented itself, we knew the Town did not have a bakery like what we were planning. We decided bringing this concept to North Providence was the right move. There are many small businesses in North Providence, and we are proud and happy to be one of the newest and part of the Renaissance. Is Bread Box “take out” only or is there seating for patrons? The bakery offers take out and in house seating. We are a bakery and café. We offer a comfortable, sunny place to relax with your coffee (or Wright’s Dairy Farm milk, tea, and other local beverages) and pastry. Please call 401-722-0370 for additional information. The Bakery is open Tuesday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm; Saturday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please follow them on Instagram and Facebook. They hope to have their website up and running soon.

TINY CHANGES, BIG RESULTS! By Susan Gazerro Will Evolve Fitness I recently read about a woman who took her first step toward healthier living. All she did initially, was to simply remove potato chips from her diet. A month later, she was 5 pounds lighter. That loss motivated her to eat better, and she gradually eliminated unhealthy food from her diet. After a year, she had lost 50 pounds. This goes to show that small changes matter. My suggestion to someone who tells me they want to lose weight is to start by cutting down or eliminating soda from their diet, if that is their drink of choice. That change alone will result in weight loss. Yes, that even refers to diet soda! It’s tempting to follow fad diets or attempt to make drastic changes to your lifestyle, but lasting success will only come when you resolve to make gradual changes that result in permanent lifestyle changes. As you gradually cut unhealthy foods from your diet, you realize you are not really missing anything, and in fact, you feel better. 24 ShopInRI
Let’s start with what a healthy plate should look like. I recommend using the ”Plate Method for Healthy Portions” as an easy way to start and maintain a healthy diet. Here’s how it works: Make sure you’re using a regular-size plate. Half of your plate will have two sections: a smaller section filled with fruit and a larger section filled with vegetables. A third section – about a quarter of the plate – should contain grains (good carbohydrates). The final section of the plate should contain protein, including beans, fish, chicken, or beef. Although white meat is preferable to red meat, if you choose to eat red meat, the ideal portion should fit in the palm of your hand. You can add two or three healthy servings of dairy a day.
I also recommend not finishing everything on your plate. Take a small portion, especially if you go out to eat, and put it aside to bring home. You will be saving hundreds of calories over the year. Another important change is to make exercise a part of your day. Just like healthy eating, incorporating exercise into your daily life is key to achieving and maintaining good health. The goal should be to fit 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, into your schedule, five times a week. You have to make this a priority, just like eating and sleeping. To begin, walk just 10 minutes a day. You can wake up just 10 minutes earlier to begin your day with a walk, do it during your lunch break for a midday jolt, or grab a family member after dinner for an evening stroll. Eventually, you can do all three and you’ll have your 30 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Remember, small changes lead to big results. For optimal results, you then should alternate your walks with 30 minutes of weight-bearing exercise twice a week, for a total of one hour each week. Building muscle with these exercises will help you lose fat and burn more calories. The weights don’t have to be heavy-just find a weight that is manageable. It’s a misconception that weight lifting is only to “bulk up.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Doing some sort of weight lifting or resistance training activates your muscles and they will stay active for an average of up to two days, depending on your size, height and weight. As your muscles are active, they continue to burn fat. People often worry about the time they’re missing with their family or friends when they exercise, so invite them to join you. Healthy living is for
everyone. I have said in the past and will say again that you are not being selfish because you take time to exercise-especially moms. Mom’s typically feel guilty and put everyone else first. You have to put you first. When mom is happy, the house is happy. When mom doesn’t feel good about herself and is miserable, this can have a negative effect on other household members. This is not meant to be funny. This is reality. Mom is the core of the household, so it is so important for her to take time to feel good about herself before she can make everyone else happy. It’s not selfish at all. It’s actually just the opposite. It’s doing something for the whole family. This holds true for those who aren’t moms, as well. Life is much more enjoyable when one feels good in their own skin. Male or female, parent or without children, married or single, you are a happier, more energetic person when you feel good! Keep moving to live life to the fullest. There will be two dates on your tombstone. The day you were born and the day you died. What truly matters is what you have done in between. Make the most of your life!! The only way to accomplish this is to feel GOOD. ShopInRI 25
Fitness Tips By: Stacie Venagro
2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro Let’s talk about motivation. There is nothing magical inside of us that’s going to get us moving. Motivation is a series of small actions we take to achieve a larger goal. Some days are tougher than others, but if you set a clear goal and your “why,” you can rely on this to keep you going each day. Let’s say, for example, you were working out 5 days a week and prepping your healthy meals, then your kids got sick, work got really busy, and you stopped. You’ve been telling yourself every week you’re going to start Monday, but when that day rolls around, you just don’t have the time or energy to get it done. There’s no doubt that life gets hectic and as a result, exercise usually gets tossed on the back burner. First, I want you to think of your workout and meal prep as an appointment that’s just as important as all of the other tasks you need to do each day. Schedule it in and make sure nothing else is planned at the same time. Block out a couple of hours on Sunday or Monday to prepare food and snacks for the next few days, so that no matter what, there’s always a healthy option on hand. Essentially, this will save you time throughout the week, when life throws unexpected events at you. Exercise does not have to be long and you don’t have to leave your house. If going to the gym or taking group classes is what you enjoy, then be sure to account for the time it takes to get there and back. Add another half hour after your meal prep if you can to plan your workouts for the week. Do not underestimate the amount of time it takes to figure out what workout you’re going to do, especially if you’re in the gym. You want your workouts to be short and effective. Hitting the treadmill 5 days a week isn’t the best use of your time. Remember that a mix of strength training and cardio is the best way to go. If your goal is a weight or size goal, buy an article of clothing that is a size too small and hang it up. This will be a reminder of where you want to be and will motivate you to get it done. Strength goals can be measured by giving yourself a fit test every couple of weeks. Pick 5-10 exercises, write them down on paper and track how many reps of each exercise you do in 1 minute. You can see your progress each time you track it.
Plateaus are very normal, so don’t let this get you down! You will get past it by just making some simple changes. There’s a quote you’ve probably heard, “if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” Many times my clients will do really well on a specific nutrition and exercise regimen, which is great, however, sometimes when we do the same thing for too long, our bodies become comfortable with this. My advice for this is to ramp up your workouts. Add something new to your routine. If you’ve been doing steady state cardio like walking, jogging, or cardio machines, switch to HIIT (high intensity interval training) or Tabata a couple of times a week. Increase your weight for strength training and decrease reps. Please be sure that you are using a weight that is safe and you’re using proper form. High weight, low rep strength training will not make you “bulky”; that is a misconception. In order to really increase muscle mass like that, you not only have to lift heavy weights, but you have to be eating more than you’re burning each day. Increasing your weight will help you build muscle and burn more fat; this just might be what your metabolism needs to get the extra boost to get out of that plateau. Switch up your food choices. If you are eating pretty much the same thing everyday, try out some new foods. Switch up your protein and carbs, and be sure to make sure you’re eating enough for the exercise you’re doing. A healthy balanced diet will help repair and build lean muscle mass and you’ll burn more calories resting. Stress is something that can cause a plateau. Not too long ago, doctors did not recognize the physical effects that stress has on the body, but now more research has shown that it can, indeed, change our bodies. Too much stress and anxiety can produce a hormone called cortisol, which can cause weight gain or difficulty losing fat. Although I’m sure we could all use some stress relief, if you feel this may be a significant factor, then there are ways to combat it. We first have to accept that there are things we simply cannot change; once you make peace with this, you can focus on the aspects of your life you can control. What you eat, your physical activity, and your “train of thought” can all be controlled. Start out with a simple 10 minute meditation each day. You might want to start your day with meditation, or end your day with it, but it really doesn’t matter when, just do whatever feels right for you. There are great apps now that offer guided meditation that are very helpful. Increase your time, as you make this a habit. Try yoga or simply gentle stretches a couple of times a week to slow down your mind, and improve your strength and flexibility at the same time. Yoga isn’t about headstands or fancy poses, it’s an individual’s practice of strengthening the mind and body. Let go of judgement and comparison. Take some time to be outdoors and enjoy nature. Even though it might be cold outside, bundle up and enjoy the fresh air. Keep a journal of your feelings each day; sometimes just the simple act of expressing yourself through writing can really reduce stress levels. You are not alone in this journey. There are many others who experience similar struggles and they have to continue to remind themselves why they started in the first place. Take care of your mind and body, not just because you want to look great, but to feel great as well. Stacie Venagro Fitness is Located at 161 Macklin Street, Cranston RI.

LOCAL MOTHER / DAUGHTER TEAM PUTS BEST FEET FORWARD FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS By Mark Berger
Kelly and Abigail White participating in Boston event this June. Too often, people go through problems that are neither seen nor discussed. They are reluctant, afraid, or scared to talk about them. Whatever they are dealing with, some people in distress may not have a place to go or someone to talk with to sort things out. Sadly, in some cases, some people dealing with this situation often conclude that nobody wants to help them and thus, decide to end their troubles permanently. Suicide is an issue that plagues all races, genders, ages, and socio-economic statuses. It does not offer any rhyme or reason, just a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Suicide can affect anyone without warning, and leaves no clues for the reasons why someone would choose to take their own life. That is why the mother/daughter team of Kelly and Abigail White of North Kingstown is being proactive. They will take part in the Out of the
Darkness Overnight Walk in Boston this June. They currently have a four-person team that will spend the night with other people walking the streets of “The Hub of the Universe” to raise mental health and suicide awareness. The event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). For the White family, it’s a subject that hits too close to home. “In 2012, one of my family members had a personal struggle with suicide,” said White, who owns Cruise Planners—Kelly White in North Kingstown—with Abigail. “It was a lot to deal with just to get through that news. We wanted to help raise awareness about this, so we sought out a way of doing that, and came across the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the “walks” they have nationally. We walked for the first time in 2015. Then, in 2017, my best friend and fellow walker’s stepdaughter took her own life, which just reinforced our commitment to this foundation.” Besides Boston, there are similar “walks” in San Francisco and New York City. The Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk is a 16-18 mile walk that occurs from dusk till dawn. Founded by Actress Mariette Hartley in 1987, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected
by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy, enabling them to take action against this leading cause of death. AFSP creates a culture that is educated about mental health through community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide. According to the AFSP website, suicide is currently the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. The highest overall rates of suicide are for adults 40 to 59 years old. The Boston Walk will feature a guest speaker who will address suicide and some of the avenues people have when dealing with such a difficult topic. There will be food and hydration stations at several mile markers, a cheering/support section at other stops, candles illuminating at the end of the walk-in remembrance of someone who lost their life or tried to take their own life. White said the event in Boston will draw between 2,000 and 3,000 walkers. “We want to do our part in bringing awareness to those who might be suffering in silence,” said White. “They do not have to go through their struggles or their lives alone. There are people willing and able to help those in crisis. We were personally affected
by this tragedy twice. We want people to know that they do not have to suffer in silence. There are professionals who want to help in any way they can.” White said she is currently accepting donations and sponsorships for her team. Sponsorships run in various tiers and have corresponding benefits, such as the name and company logo of the sponsor listed on event program and backs of walkers on T-shirts, which are projected during event. White said she hopes the team raises $10,000 to be donated to AFSP. The mother/daughter team is hosting a fundraiser to further raise awareness and funds. The event happens Saturday, May 4, 6:00 PM--10:00 PM., Quonset O Club, 200 Lt. James Brown Rd., North Kingstown. The event will feature food, live music, dancing, amazing raffle prizes and a silent auction to benefit the AFSP. The cost to participate in this event is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets may be purchased on Eventbrite. Visit www.eventbrite.com/e/ american-foundation-for-suicide-prevention-annualfundraising-event-tickets-57543957526 for more information. 8 am
I pry my eyes open when my iPhone alarm goes off and slide out of bed. My pup, Lulu, jumps out of the foot of the bed as she loves digging down under my covers and sleeps by my feet-my little hot water bottle! I work for myself and don’t have a lot of overhead, no office to go to, and all of my employees are out of town. So, I spoil myself with my days. Since my girls, Caroline and Mary Margaret, are pretty much on their own, I decide how my day goes. Today, I don’t have any major commitments, except for a late conference call tonight, so when I have those days, I take a sigh of relief and have my coffee and prayer/meditation time. I usually light a candle on my table, bring my diary and devotionals to write, contemplate.
9 am
On a normal day, I’ll take Lulu, my rescue pup, for a 5 mile run, or head to my gym.
10 am
Since I’m really bad at sleeping, I’m checking my emails 24/7. I average about 200 emails a day. But my work doesn’t feel like work! It is who I am! By 10 am, I’m hitting the paints or sketch pad. On an average day, we have a design deadline for the brand. At the moment, I’m working on the January 2020 collection. 34 34ShopInRI ShopInRI
1 pm
I take a quick lunch break, grab and go, so to speak! I try to prep and roast veggies every Sunday, or cook a pot of soup, something so I can “grab and go” anytime of the day. Or, I’ll head down to my local coffee shop, L’Artisan, and have a cappuccino. When I’m on a roll with a glass, it really is hard to stop; I mean, I don’t think about food when designing.

2 pm
Hand in paints, pencil to paper, oh, and I have a blog post due! All about being a novice Sommelier or Wine Snobbery for Dummies (lol). So I take a break from painting the glass (I’m on a floral custom for Hallmark, my largest retailer) and dig into my blog post.
4 pm
Just received an email that my daughter is not feeling well at college so I get dressed (yes, I work in a t-shirt and yoga pants… paints are messy!!) and head to her nearby college. I bring her some home cooked soup and Gatorade.
6 pm
I am just told I have to be in Kansas City at Hallmark’s headquarters for 4 days next month. Two signing events in their flagship stores and 2 days of meetings. So, I work with my assistant to book the travel for me and my team.
7 pm
Conference call with my licensee in Chicago regarding quality control and new techniques/ materials. Afterwards, I put the finishing touches on the glass, photograph, and overnight it to my studio in Savannah, Georgia for color coding and recipe layout. Then the glass travels to Chicago. There are many steps to get a design out; of course, the most important part being the designing!
8 pm
I open my front door and see two huge boxes of samples of new Holiday 2019 designs! Always so fun to see them live after all the hard work we do to design and get the prototype in production! These designs were developed in mid-2018. I take a few photos and do my daily Instagram post, making sure to go back and respond to comments on previous posts.
9 pm
I fill my clawfoot tub with water, coconut oil and Epsom salts and soak my cares away while reading US magazine.
11pm
Lights out. Lulu and I are comfy, but I can’t sleep, so I watch my geeky British Crime series for a couple of hours, finally nodding off to my cloud. ShopInRI 35

SUIT YOURSELF at Franklin Rogers LTD. The New Looks for Spring, 2019
It is hard to believe, but it does appear that Spring is on its way. I am sure that there will be a lot of fits and starts, but ultimately the warm weather will be here. For the guys who care how they look, the season brings a time when your winter coat or jacket no longer hides the weight you have put on, that you haven’t been to the gym, or you eat too much comfort food. This season, you will be bearing it all. It would be so much easier for all of us if everybody had the perfect model’s body, and could just wear Euro style slim fit suits. We feel the same way as you do, and finding a suit that a bigger man, a muscular man, or an athlete can put on, and not look too burly, has been like searching for the holy grail. We have, however, found a few new lines that fit amazingly. One of my regular customers recently came in, a man whose weight has fluctuated somewhat over the years, and tried on one of these new lines. He stared at himself in the mirror and looked perplexed. I asked him what was wrong, and he said, “Does this suit make me look thinner”? I just smiled. He bought it. And, yes, he absolutely looked thinner in that suit. It is all in the design.
40 ShopInRI
This company offers suits in three different fits. There is the slim fit, perfect for all you thin guys out there. The full cut, for those of us who have been fighting the battle of the bulge for all these years, and the modern fit which has a slimming effect on every body. The suit is ideal for the guy who played football, soccer, lacrosse, and hockey and has thighs that are too big for skinny pants. Yet, the pant leg offers a taper from the knee down to the ankle which gives the pant a slimmed down look. The shoulders are wider at the blade, and the armhole is deeper and more comfortable for the guys who have the big pipes. You can finally wear a suit that will not scrunch you when you try to get into it. The waistline is tapered in on the jacket, and the taper moderates at the bottom of the jacket. In addition, the sleeves on the jacket, despite the fullness in the armhole, are tapered down nicely to get you the trim look. Listen up guys, are you going to the gym and finding that your old suits don’t fit you right anymore? Are you going to chain stores and finding that the cost of altering a suit to fit you is ridiculous? If so, it is time you stop by Franklin Rogers Ltd. You will find that our suits not only fit better, but we don’t charge for tailoring, as our suits fit right to begin with.

Confused? Extended Care Health Care rance Life Insu Steven M. Gosetti, CLTC Insurance agent
Q: When is it the best time to look into long-term care insurance? a: That is a good question and one that is often asked. Unfortunately, there is no one answer that suits everyone, so it is best to look into the process of qualifying, as well as the costs. First of all, it is very hard to qualify for long-term care insurance because it is based on health. Because these policies will often pay out a lot more in benefits than you would pay in premiums, companies often want to ensure that the candidates are healthy. The other factor to look at is age. In general, the younger you are, the less expensive your long-term care insurance rate. Therefore, the true answer for the best time to look into long-term care insurance can be found when you consider both health and age. It has been my experience that an ideal age to begin exploring options is in your 50’s. This time frame usually provides a good balance of age (less expensive) and health (qualifying). Q: What is the new Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period for Medicare I have been hearing about? a: For 2019, Medicare changed the process for disenrolling from your Medicare advantage plan. This year, you have the following options if you want to make a change to the plan you selected the previous year during the annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 to Dec. 7) or to the 2018 Medicare advantage Plan you allowed to continue for 2019. From Jan. 1 to March 31, you can: 1. Change your Medicare advantage Plan (Ma) to another Medicare advantage Plan. 2. Return to Original Medicare from a Medicare advantage Plan and join a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan if the Ma plan included prescription coverage. any change you make will be effective the first day of the month after the plan receives your request. PERSONAL INJURIES ARE MORE THAN NUMBERS AT
THE LAW OFFICES OF ROBERT V. RUSSO
44 ShopInRI 44 ShopInRI
One primary misconception attorneys face is media portrayal. People either see or hear an advertised law firm and create a perception of the law based on the quality and content of the advertisement. Unfortunately, the content and quality of many legal advertisements borders on the ridiculous and cheapens the legal profession.
In addition to Personal Injury, Attorney Russo’s office handles Family Law, Criminal matters, Divorce, DUI and Immigration Law. Attorney Russo noted that each case has its own nuances—even their own quirks and challenges. He noted one such case involving a domestic dispute involving a restraining order. What was the problem with this particular case that was so unusual?
What people miss in hearing and seeing the commercials is how the law firm really works. It can be one thing to see how companies work on television; it’s another to work alongside them. That is what Robert Russo, Esq., of The Law Offices of Robert V. Russo, located at 1011 Smith Street in Providence, sees as the defining characteristic between his firm and others. While some lawyers are spending their time making commercials Robert Russo is working on his clients’ cases.
“Everyone on both sides were deaf. We had sign language translators that had to communicate the emotional issues between the parties. That also brought on a lot of challenges because restraining order cases are often emotionally charged,” Russo said. Despite the communication issues that were presented in that case, Attorney Russo said the parties came to an amicable resolution.
“I take the time to see every client who walks in through our doors,” said Russo, who has been practicing law for 28 years. “I work with them to identify their problem and create a strategy to assist them through the often complex and confusing legal process. It’s more of a commitment to quality and service to ensure the client receives a fair shake.” Attorney Russo was born and continues to reside in Johnston and understood early on that he wanted to help people. Beginning at Johnston High School, Russo worked toward attaining his goal. After graduating from Johnston High School, he graduated from Bryant College (now Bryant University) with a degree in Criminal Justice. Upon graduation from college Russo obtained his law degree from the University of Baltimore. He is a member of the Rhode Island Bar Associations, Federal Bar for the District of Rhode Island, member of the United States Supreme Court Bar, Rhode Island Trial Lawyers Association, Italian American Bar Association and the Justinian Law Society. Russo began his career at the law offices of Coia and Lepore, where he spent seven years gaining the invaluable lessons in the law. He joked that he started doing what was called “The Miscellaneous Department” because that consisted of the work that was often time consuming and the more senior attorneys were focused on the big stuff. However, this type of work gave him a wide range of legal experience. Another benefit to “The Miscellaneous Department” was making many contacts in the various courts and institutions in the state. Attorney Russo said being able to aide others in numerous forms, some that may not quickly come to mind, appealed to him. “Many people think of personal injury law as either auto accidents and/or slip-and-falls,” he said. “It can be anything that causes injury to a party ranging from motorcycle accidents and getting the wrong prescriptions to medical malpractice and worker’s compensation. When potential clients come to the office, they are there to be ‘made whole’ from what initially put them in that situation.”
The attorney also said his office works on creating personal relationships with clients unlike the high-volume mills that you continually see bombarding the airways. He noted some of his clientele that have been with him for over twenty years and he now represents their children. “People see the ads promoting high settlement amounts and think, ‘that sounds great, I should connect with them,’” he said. “What I ask the clients when they bring up the settlements broadcast on billboards is that it looks good, but what was the case really worth and what should the settlement have been.” When Attorney Russo is not in the office, he takes on another challenging field: politics. He has been a fixture on the Johnston Council for 25 years and served as its President for 17 of those years. Attorney Russo loves the outdoors and regularly, hikes, skis, snowmobiles, ATVs and Jet Skis. Russo is a competitive runner as well as a sprint tri-athlete. He is also an avid traveler having seen much of North America and Europe. He is married to Isabelle who is from Belgium and is a foreign language teacher at Johnston Senior High School where their daughter, Sophie, is a junior. Attorneys Robert V. Russo and Associates offer the expertise of a full-size law firm, in a comfortable, personalized atmosphere. They are a boutique law firm whose ultimate objective is helping clients obtain the best possible outcome with the least amount of stress. The firm is highly revered for its ability to handle the most challenging legal situations with targeted and steadfast intensity. Robert V. Russo and Associates focuses all areas of personal injury law. They have extensive experience in all aspects of personal injury claims with an impressive record of success. And when it comes to a personal injury matter you don’t pay them until they pay you! For more information about Robert V. A Kiss Between Strangers will Live on Forever By Julia Romano Even after the death of two strangers who fatefully came together for a minute in time, the symbol of what they did to celebrate the ending of World War II will live on forever. When people kiss, it’s normally because they have some sort of relationship, not always one that is intimate, but typically one where they feel some sort of loving connection. That however, was not the case when the American “kissing sailor” suddenly took it upon himself to plant a huge kiss on the lips of the surprised Greta Zimmer on August 14, 1945, in Times Square. What was not known at the time by the kisser or the kissee was that there was a photographer who had been searching for that perfect photo-the one that would say it all about how Americans felt about the end of World War II. It was not until 2012, however, when the two people enthralled in the kiss were identified. As the story goes, the sailor, eventually identified as George Mendonsa, started his day, possibly with thoughts of kissing a girl, just not the one that became part of the most romantic photo of the 20th century behind a mystery that took more than 65 years to solve. The young Navy quartermaster was born in Newport, RI on Feb. 19, 1923. 48 ShopInRI 48 ShopInRI
Both parents emigrated from Portugal; his father fished for squid, scup, bass and tuna, and from an early age enlisted George and his three sons in his fishing expeditions. After enlisting in the Navy in 1942, George participated in many battles, including the invasion of Iwo Jima. It was on a temporary leave to attend his sister’s wedding when he had returned from the Philippines. Instead of dwelling on all of the horror he had seen as a result of the war, he decided to go on a date with a young, pretty girl named Rita Petry on the fateful date of August 14, 1945. George and Rita had met at family barbecue in Providence a few weeks earlier and George expressed immediate interest in her. The plan for the date was for George to travel to NY, and while dressed in his Navy uniform, he and Rita would go into the city for a show at Radio City Music Hall. They never did see the ending of the show, however, because of the loud pounding on the theater doors from people on the street who were screaming, “The war is over, and the Japanese have surrendered.” For any soldier fighting in the war and on that day for George, especially, those words were golden. He and Greta immediately left the theater and ran into the first bar they came across. In the bar, everyone was celebrating and the
drinks kept coming. George was taking advantage of all of those drinks because he was personally affected by the exciting news. He would no longer have to return to the Philippines to witness the horrible events that he longed to forget. Greta Zimmer was a 21 year old dental assistant from Queens, NY. On that fateful day, she was at work, clad in her white uniform-a uniform that resembled one of a nurse. Greta kept hearing stories from patients coming into the dentist office about the war being over. After hearing several of the same rumors all morning, Greta decided to take a walk to Times Square to seek the truth. Alfred Eisenstaedt was a photographer working for Time-Life Magazine. Eisenstaedt was out and about on August 14, 1945 in search of a photo that would be special-one that would be more than just a picture. He wanted to photograph someone or something that would be meaningful-something that would be a symbol of the end of World War II. As he pushed through Times Square, everyone was celebrating the end of the war. People were smiling and laughing like it was one big party. He continued to stroll through the streets when he finally found what he knew would be that special something. He came upon
a sailor and a woman, who appeared to be a nurse. They were embracing and the sailor held the “nurse” in a dip as they appeared to be sharing a celebratory kiss. Some of this was true, but not all of it. After leaving the bar with George having many drinks, he and Rita made their way to Times Square when George spotted Greta, who he thought was a nurse. Memories from the war and how the nurses played such a significant role in saving soldiers took over. He ran over to her, Rita, in tow, and dipped Greta as he planted that iconic smooch on her lips. For George, this was a moment that for him, was a showing of appreciation and camaraderie with someone he felt a closeness to. In this one moment, Eisenstaedt snapped the photo that he had been seeking, although no one else knew that the photograph had been taken, or that their picture was about to be published in Life magazine, or that, decades later, multiple men and women would come forward claiming to be that sailor and that nurse. After that day, life went on for George and Rita. Just as he suddenly grabbed and kissed Greta, he let her go. George stumbled off towards the subway, Rita trailing behind, and Greta walked back to her office. George and Rita never discussed the kiss, nor did Greta tell anyone what had happened to her. George and Rita eventually married and had children. The same happened for Greta, as she married Dr. Mischa Friedman and became Greta Zimmer Friedman. George has said that he didn’t even remember the kiss, possibly
because of his alcohol consumption, but Greta has said that she never forgot. Life magazine published the photo in the issue that ran right after V-J Day, but not on the cover-it was buried on page 27. Over the years, Life ran the image intermittently, but it wasn’t until 35 years later, after editors claimed to have discovered the nurse (they had it wrong), that the photo became a hot topic. George first saw the photo in a 1980 Time Magazine issue, and he says, “It was like looking in the mirror.” Greta had the same reaction as George and knew that it was her in the photo. George and Greta were not the only ones convinced that they were in the photo. The mystery is what cemented the image in the American psyche. No real attempt was made to identify the sailor and the nurse until 1987, when Life magazine announced it was selling prints of Eisenstaedt’s photo. Uninterested in either money or fame, but upset that he had effectively been edited out of history, George sued Time-Life. Three professionals of photography agreed to examine the photo. All of the experts agreed, through similar forensic analysis, that the “nurse” is Greta. The clincher for the authors was the presence of Rita, so long overlooked, and yet, quite recognizable, standing in the background. Rita married Dr. Mischa Friedman in 1956 and together, had two children. She passed away, following her husband, at the age of 92 on September 18, 2016 in Richmond, Virginia. ShopInRI 49 After being discharged from the Navy, George moved back to Rhode Island and returned to advance his career in professional fishing. George and Rita married in 1946 and lived their 73 years of marriage in Providence, until George’s recent death at age 95 on February 18, 2019. Besides his wife Rita, George leaves behind 2 children, 3 grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. Even after the passing of these two strangers, their kiss will live on forever. ShopInRI 49

Amanda Salemi Fire Dancer
By Jenn Lombari
Hundreds of years ago, fire dancing originated in the Polynesian triangle. Poi is said to have been started by the people of New Zealand. Poi, a Maori word meaning “ball on a string” was used not only as an exercise to train for war, but it later became used as a form of storytelling and dance. The poi balls were heavy and would help in building wrist strength and flexibility to work with certain weapons and tools. The poi was not lit on fire until the mid 20th century. It was the Samoans that incorporated fire into their traditional knife dance known as the ailao. Modern fire dance did not become popular in the United States until the 1990s and became a feature at music festivals and other large outdoor entertainment gatherings. There are hundreds of fire dancing individuals and troupes across the USA right now and Rhode Island is lucky to have Amanda Salemi. Amanda has surrounded herself with the arts her whole life. She herself is a singer and guitar player. She performs with Consuelo’s Revenge and My Mother. When you’re always in this environment, you’re bound to run into inspiring

Her good friend, Tim Davis, had been using light poi, which is two lighted balls on the end of a rope. Amanda picked them up and started twirling them and finding the rhythm. She was a natural. Tim encouraged her to keep practicing until
she would eventually move up to using fire poi. Other local fire performers helped her along the way. JD Killoran taught her a lot of what she incorporates into her act. She also learned a lot from local fire dancing veteran, Spogga Hash. Her first public performance was with Spogga at a wedding and she would later perform at Waterfire in Downtown Providence with him in 2017.

Another local who has helped a great deal is Sasha “Fire Gypsy” Gaulin. Sasha was featured alongside Hugh Jackman in the movie, The Greatest Showman, as one of the fire breathers. Amanda has even done a workshop with Elizabeth Knights of Cirque de Light. Knights can be seen performing regularly at Waterfire. Learning from the pros so she can learn the right way, for the last five years, Amanda has continued to learn as she performs for crowds across the state. She’s always been fascinated with the endless possibilities. The props that she uses right now are a staff, eating torches, fans, poi, two swords, and her new favorite prop, the rope dart. She also breathes fire. Amanda is hoping to acquire a whip and wands very soon. She feels it will bring her act to another level. As you can imagine, practice makes perfect, or as close to perfect as you can get while working with natural elements. She has a room in her apartment where she is able to practice some of her moves with props but for obvious reasons, all fire related practice is done outdoors. “My neighbors always get a show.” Amanda explained while laughing. The bigger props, like the staff, need to be practiced outside. Even the rope dart is practiced outdoors because of the reach it has. She also finds it helpful to practice near the water. It’s a good tool to use to learn how to work with the wind. People do this for a living. Amanda is not a hobbiest. She’s a natural entertainer that has the ability to captivate a crowd. While she does enjoy performing at big events like Waterfire and the Wakefield Beer Fest, she’s focusing this year on weddings and other small gatherings, but nothing is out of the question. Parades, festivals, block parties…. She’s insured, and competitively priced within industry standards and will be happy to walk you through the simple process of attaining a permit for your event and tell you anything you need to know. One of her favorite performances was a luau themed party. Since fire dancing is a big part of Hawaiian culture, it was very fitting. She danced to unique music selections that kept the crowd entertained until the very end. As we approach warmer weather, many are starting to plan outdoor events. If you’re looking to make your party unique and unforgettable, consider hiring Amanda Salemi. She can be reached at: ajsalemi86@gmail.com

CAUSE PAINTING IS PERSONAL, CERTAPRO’S MARK BULPITT ENSURES THE WOW EFFECT
We paint lives not houses.
By Mark Berger With springtime here, people are warming up to maintaining their home. They want their homes shining inside and out. Since people lack the time and resources to complete these projects, they need the help and experience of a company that can handle their “todo” list. That is where CertaPro of Northern Rhode Island, a fully insured and licensed company based in Cumberland, can assist. Owner Mark Bulpitt started his company in 2012 after working in Corporate America, living around the world and being adapt at seizing an opportunity when it presents itself. Although CertaPro is a national franchise, Bulpitt stressed that his company is independently owned and operated. “I came back from living in China and settled here in Cumberland because my family wanted to spend time closer to family,” said Bumpitt, whose company does residential and commercial painting in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. “There are two factors that drew me to this industry. First, I have a clear understanding of the trades and many local contacts. “Second, painting is an erratic industry. There are a lot of flyby-night operations that are ‘here today, gone tomorrow’. There is plenty of turnover and our industry receives a bad reputation for painters who take deposits from customers and then never return or provide shoddy work. We dedicate ourselves toward ensuring that our customers are 56 ShopInRI

completely satisfied with the work we have done. We strive for the customers’ ‘WOW’ effect.” Bulpitt said the difference between his shop and his competitors is their customer satisfaction process. Mentioning the fact some in his industry are in business for a short-term gain, his company wants to establish lifetime relationships with customers. That includes an initial consultation to determine the project scope, the crew overseeing the project until completion. This is a six-step process known as the “Certainty Service System.” He said the goal is the customer knows what is happening at each step and can see the progress. Another aspect that can be seen as useful would be their “Certa Basics” plan. The 11 steps range from making sure all appointments are confirmed

and follow up is done with the clients to employee safety. These are mostly commonsense aspects that should be second nature in the industry. As Bulpitt noted, that is not always the case. “I tell people that before they make a decision to check out who you are dealing with,” he said. “We have a checklist that we give people that outlines what they should ask them. Some of the questions are basic such as ‘do they have insurance’ or, ‘what is their warranty’? There are other questions that, if either left unanswered or not answered well can leave the customer with little or no recourse.” Bulpitt referred to Certapro’s “Contractor Checklist”. Some 18 points are noted on the sheet that can make or break a project before it begins, Bulpitt said. Along with the aforementioned questions, Bulpitt noted other questions to ask the contractor. Among them: Are they an EPA Certified Renovator for Lead Detection and Removal? Bulpitt said his company is certified in this area and added that this is especially important for houses built before 1978. What is their Liability and Worker’s Compensation Insurance Levels? He said some companies either do not carry insurance or have minimal coverage, which means there may be little to nothing consumers can do if the project stops. Specified Number or Coats and Brand of Paint. Not every customer will ask. figuring the contractor will know what’s best. Bulpitt said his company spells out those options because paints have different textures, bases, styles, etc., and the wrong kind for the job can adversely impact the finished project, he said. CertaPro of Northern Rhode Island works on residential and commercial projects. Their work ranges from area libraries, schools, senior centers and rehabilitation centers to restaurants, rental properties, condominiums and colleges. Bulpitt estimates they have the capacity to do 300 jobs annually. When someone contacts the company, they will be greeted with a friendly voice. Either Office Manager Nancy Kelliher, Sales Manager Chris Gosetti or Bulpitt are available to listen to issues concerning their clients’ painting projects. Bulpitt grew up in North Providence and

Will You Spend Your Retirement Savings or Leave It Behind? The Answer May Surprise You A key financial question for retirees is what to do with their hard-earned retirement savings. For example, some investors may find it more fulfilling to provide a college fund for grandchildren rather than purchase a second home for themselves. The opposite can also be true, and that’s okay. In my experience working with retirees, I’ve found it’s critically important to identify what each person’s goals are for their nest egg. Do they want to spend down their assets pursuing activities that bring them joy or leave an inheritance to loved ones? If you find yourself wrestling with the same question, read on for some considerations that can help determine the right approach for you.
The rationale for spending down your wealth On one hand, you may enter retirement with the primary goal of living the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to earn. Pursuing a hobby, traveling, purchasing a vacation home or fulfilling another retirement dream may be exactly what you envisioned your later years to be. If you fall into this category, keep in mind that these plans likely come at a price. Spending often goes up in the first few years of retirement as retirees are enthusiastic about all the activities they want to do. Yet given the realities of longer life expectancies, it’s crucial for all retirees to be prepared for a retirement that could last for several decades. This means your savings will need to cover routine expenses, which are likely to rise due to inflation, as well as the potential for health and long-term care services. Ensure you allocate enough dollars for these purposes before deciding whether or how much money to spend down or leave behind.
The rationale for leaving a legacy On the other hand, if your primary retirement goal is to leave a legacy to your loved ones, it’s important to start nailing down the details of inheritance plans early. As you do, keep in mind that your legacy includes what you plan to give as an inheritance upon your death, in addition to what you give and value today. Perhaps you are eager to give your children and grandchildren a helping hand. Your generosity could make a significant difference in helping them reach key financial milestones, such as achieving a college degree, purchasing a home or paying off a mortgage. Or, maybe you prefer to contribute funds to a charity, foundation, or alma mater that aligns with your values. Think about donating to causes that are most important to you or have made a significant impact on your life. Whether you give to your loved ones, philanthropic causes or both, create or update an estate plan to document your wishes. Your plan should include written instructions (e.g. a will or trust) and up-to-date beneficiary designations on all your accounts.
Finding a happy medium Spending your assets or leaving an inheritance are both great options. Yet many of my clients hope to accomplish both. If this is you too, know it’s possible to find a middle ground. After all, each person’s retirement dream is unique, so your financial plan to accomplish it should be too. As you weigh your options on how to allocate your savings, it may be important to you to talk with your spouse or partner about what brings each of you the most joy. Once you’re aligned, communicate your intentions with family. Estate planning can be a tough topic to raise with loved ones, no matter how much or little money you plan to pass down. But having the conversation can alleviate tension down the road while giving your children confidence about what to expect. If you’d like a second opinion on how to achieve your retirement dream, consult a financial advisor and attorney. These professionals can offer advice and encouragement, helping you to find your own happy medium between spending and providing an inheritance with your assets. 4TH MONDAY NETWORKING ANNIVERSARY 10 YEARS IN THE MAKING By Mark Berger When the gala event for the 4th Monday Networking anniversary took place in late February, the process of getting there somewhat mirrored the issues the group faced while establishing themselves as one of the premiere stops for business professionals looking to grow their businesses. The event was initially supposed to be held at the Red Stone Grill in North Attleboro, the official venue for the meeting. However, a snowstorm a few days prior to the event damaged the restaurant’s roof, prompting it to be shut down 64 ShopInRI

ed up to 100 people to attend,” he continued. “I don’t know if everyone would have fit had they all come.”
“The Red Stone Grill basically told me at the 11th hour they needed to shut down for a week to get their roof fixed,” said Salvas, who helped form the 4th Monday Networking concept with Dan Edmonds. “Red Stone’s Owner, Ara Yarian, and some other people, connected me with Box Seats Owner Charlie Tgibedes, who said they would accommodate us on short notice.
4th Monday Networking started at CBS Scene at Patriot Place in Foxborough. Salvas said Edmonds initially formed a LinkedIn group called New England Networkers. Salvas said if the group reached 250 members, Edmonds would then pay for a party. The group reached its goal and held their first meeting at Patriot Place. Among those in attendance at that time included Dave Miles, Anne Crawford, Ed McDonough, and Salvas. All of them also attended the

anniversary event, according to Salvas. While people were happy to be part of something new, Salvas said several issues with CBS Scene made the experience less enjoyable for some and a reason for changes. “It was very loud in there and the acoustics were not the best for a networking event,” he said. “We decided to move down to Bar Louie within Patriot Place, and the event stayed there for a few years. However, it got to the point where we wanted to hold our meetings on their rooftop. The management would wait until the day of our meeting to decide if they would let us go up there. If there was any hint of rain, wind or thunder, then they would not let us have the meeting up there. Downstairs got be very loud inside as well.” About five years into the event, Edmonds moved to Florida. Before doing so, he asked Salvas if he wanted to continue doing the 4th Monday Networking. Salvas agreed to carry the torch and worked to find a more permanent venue. With the help of Susan Rooks, they spent one year at The Lafayette House in Foxborough before determining that the venue also was not conducive to networking. After much research, and the help of avid networker Carmine DeLuca, Salvas settled on the Red Stone Grill on the corner of Rte. 1 and Chestnut Avenue. Salvas said Yarian has been very accommodating; adding the function room has been welcoming because of the lower ceiling, vast space and ability for people to hear each other was not lost on attendees. While the event typically draws 30-50 people monthly, Salvas mentioned the November event as being the most popular. Occurring around Thanksgiving, he partners with Toys for Tots asking attendees for donations of new, unwrapped gifts in lieu of an entrance fee. Salvas said the
event gets 100 donations annually and estimates that nearly 2,000 gifts have been collected over the years. Another benefit to Salvas’ event is the partnership with other networking professionals who hold their own events. He said working with people who put on events in Massachusetts and Rhode Island can have viable options, while not having to choose which events to attend. “We have a group of people, such as Richard Austin, Carmella Beroth, Susan Lataille, Kamil Sarji, Jay White, Mitch Zucker and me who all hold events in both states,” Salvas said. “We worked together to make sure each event we put on does not conflict with someone else. This way, we all have the chance to promote our event and attend the others without the fear of stepping on anyone else’s toes.” The 4th Monday event happens at the Red Stone Grill, 120 Chestnut St., North Attleboro, MA. The cost to attend is $10 before the event and $15 at the door. “Be sure to bring plenty of business cards, an elevator pitch and a positive attitude,” said Salvas. More details may be found by contacting Salvas either by email at bob@bobsalvas.com or by telephone at 401359-1602. Additional information may also be found by visiting the 4th Monday Networking page on Facebook and in his weekly online networking newsletter. ShopInRI 65

A Simple, Sure to be Often Overlooked, Home Maintenance Initiative
My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting. com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! This is NOT a lie. I sat down earlier to work at my desk and my desk chair, literally, fell apart underneath me . It certainly could have been because I ate too big of a breakfast. It also could have been because the craftsman who originally assembled it (me) was just not on his ‘A’ game the day he put it together. Or, the option that I really believe to most likely be the case, after a period of time of use without “checking the connections”, the wear on the chair sneakily crept up on me until I almost ended up on the floor. During the time periods of the year when the majority of us spend more time indoors, it may not be a bad idea to take some time (probably would only take an hour or less) to take a spin around the home or office and just “tighten” up things that need to be tightened up. This could be something similar to the experience I
mentioned where a simple maintenance check (making sure the screws were tight) every so often would have undoubtedly kept mychair together underneath me. It could also mean things such as checking that everything around your home or office needing batteries is properly powered and that there are replacement batteries (that may be needed in a pinch) in a drawer or on a shelf somewhere to take the place of any dead batteries that may be found or may be on their way toward dying. Recently I was at a friend’s house and the batteries in their remote control died on them just as a command came up on the TV to press ‘X’ button or the TV would shut down because of ‘X’ reason – normally a simple task, unless, of course, your batteries die as you are attempting to do the TV’s bidding… It would probably be best to make a list of simple things that one can tackle before just randomly running around guessing as to what might need some TLC (Tender, Love, and Care). The list could serve as a road map for all those pain in the neck things that would be nice to catch before they influenced something annoying to happen (which, in turn, could have possibly been prevented with a simple maintenance tweak beforehand). For, from personal experience, it is much better to have an extra battery for the smoke detector on hand and a step ladder for reaching it, BEFORE the annoying ‘beep’ starts to occur that so many of us have experienced in the past! As a matter of fact, in true Italian style I was attending a wake of a departed Italo American friend and felt a tug on my arm, it was another dear friend who gave me the head tilt to meet in him the back of the funeral parlor. So, I said my goodbyes and headed to the back and sit beside my friend. (One never knows what may come out at an Italian wake). He leans in and quietly

Robert Caro “WORKING”
A Master Writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning Historian shares Adventures and Techniques in the quietly fascinating Working, out this month. By: Andrew Allin One of America’s most revered authors has released a new book (“Working: Researching, Interviewing, Writing” by Robert Caro, Penguin Random House, ISBN # 978-0-525-656340), and many of his vertible fan club of devoted readers will be...frustrated. Some are downright annoyed. A recent profile in the Wall Street Journal quoted some fans saying what they are too polite to tell Caro in person: What concerns them is Caro’s his five book magnum opus, The Years of Lyndon Johnson. Or, more precisely, the missing grand finale he has spent a lifetime building towards. As the arc of Johnson’s life became increasingly complex, each of Caro’s four masterpieces have taken longer and longer to appear. Volume one in 1982. The second in 1990. Part three, covering his emperorship of the 1950s US Senate, did not arrived until 2002. Aptly titled “Master of the Senate”, it won Caro his second Pulitzer Prize. In 2012 came book four, covering Johnson’s miserable Vice Presidency and shocking ascension to the White House with President Kennedy’s murder. Seven years of additional research has passed and now Caro has grown to 83 years of age. In interviews he says he sees no end in sight when he will complete the final book covering Johnson’s tumultuous presidency. Fans have become increasingly worried he will never finish, that he will remain in endless scholarship and leave the five book masterpiece without its climax. The writer has already decreed no one will be allowed to finish it should he fail to. And now Caro has paused to write Working, sharing adventures in chronicling men who wielded enormous, often deadly power - rising structures up thousands of feet into city skies or bombing other cities to rubble. Caro details his personal adventures searching thousands of sheets of paper records, interviewing hundreds of secretaries, aides, functionaries, hangers-on, and the like, and seeking to understand... a bureaucrat. Or a politician. How interesting can be that? Some just wish he would finish the darned Johnson book. While reading about a writer sounds dull as dishwater, Caro
is an elegant and thoughtful thinker of everything he sees and experiences. Writing is a treasure, a joy for those who love elegant, understated writing, or insights into the hidden gears which run our society. Just his description of meeting the tyrant-like Robert Moses, a man never elected to anything but who had, in New York City - in America - his own private police force of two hundred troopers and a stream of tax revenue of millions he alone controlled. Caro explains how this could possibly be, in Writing, and it is fascinating. As is his first scoop: “Newsday had been doing a series of articles on Mitchel Field, a big Air Force base in the middle of Long Island’s Nassau County that the military was giving up. Its twelve hundred acres were the last large open space in the county, so what happened to it was important. The F.A.A. was seeking to make it a civilian airport. Newsday, however, felt that it should be used instead for public purposes—in particular, for education, to allow Hofstra University to expand, and to create a campus for Nassau Community College, the only general-education public college on Long Island, which was then being housed in temporary quarters in the county courthouse in Mineola. The rooms there were already too crowded to accommodate the students, many of them from the large low-income community in nearby Hempstead. Public education for the poor: that was something worth fighting for. I hadn’t been working on any of the Mitchel Field stories. But on this Saturday suddenly this guy from the F.A.A. was on the phone, and he says something along the lines of “I really like what you guys are doing on Mitchel Field, and I’m here alone in the F.A.A. offices, and if you send someone down here I know what files you should be looking at.” I will never forget that night. It was the first time I had ever gone through files. The official met me at the front door and led me to a room with a conference table in the middle, and, on the table, high stacks of file folders. And somehow, in a strange way, sitting there going through them, I felt at home. As I went through the memos and the letters and the minutes of meetings, I could see a pattern emerging, revealing the real reason that the agency wanted the field to become a civilian airport: executives of corporations with offices on Long Island, who seemed to be quite friendly with the F.A.A. officials, wanted to be able to fly in and out of Long Island on their company planes without the inconvenience of having to drive to Idlewild or LaGuardia. I kept looking for a piece of paper on which someone came right out and said that, but I didn’t find one; everything I could find talked around that point. But between all the pieces of paper I found sentences and paragraphs that, taken together, made the point clear.” As a writer who dug farther, pushed harder, and understood deeper historical events than most historical writers ever imagined, Caro has endless tales of interest to share and this book is fascinating.
