A wedding cake that is exceptional and yummy will certainly entice and satisfy you and your wedding guests. Finding the perfect gown will ensure the need for a bride to look and feel like a princess on her magical day. Next, a photographer is chosen who will create lifetime memories to look back on and to share with family and friends. Flowers and arrangements will be chosen to reflect the atmosphere the couple is striving to create. Another decision is the choice of a limousine that will transport the couple in style. A bride is not a bride without a stunning ring to be put on her finger by the man of her dreams. Other jewelry may be necessary to complete the bride’s perfect look. Couples will also choose invitations that express their lifetime commitment and that announce the details of their special day.

Construction on the $1.1 billion Harmony of the Seas started in 2013 in SaintNazaire, France. Thousands of onlookers watched it head out to sea this week to test everything from navigational equipment to steering. The Harmony of the Seas is scheduled to spend the summer taking passengers around the Mediterranean before relocating to its permanent home in Florida in November. At that point, it will cost approximately $2,000, at least, for a couple to embark on a seven-night trip between Florida and the Caribbean aboard the world’s biggest cruise ship.
Myrtle Beach, a city and vacation destination on South Carolina’s Atlantic coast is the hub of the Grand Strand, a 60mile string of beaches. It’s known for its celebrity-designed golf courses and brown-sugar-colored beach. Along its beachfront boardwalk are arcades, souvenir stands and restaurants, as well as the old-fashioned Family Kingdom Amusement Park and the SkyWheel, one of the country’s tallest ferris wheels.
This New Seat Could Be the Solution for Obese Flyers
More than one-third of US adults are considered obese, CBS News reports. Now a French airplane manufacturer thinks it has a solution to keep those Americans comfortable when they take to the skies. According to NBC news, Airbus filed a patent application for a bench seat on Feb. 11. The patent shows three different seat-belt configurations that would allow three average-sized passengers, two obese passengers, or two adults with two small children to use the bench. The design also calls for various armrests that can pop down depending on the passenger configuration. The “utilization of space available in a passenger cabin is of major economic importance,” the patent application notes. And seating in an aircraft“should be as flexibly, rapidly, and easily re-configurable as possible.” The patent application doesn’t
specifically mention obese passengers, focusing instead on families, senior citizens, and passengers with mobility issues. But CBS reports it could be used to charge obese passengers more, as the bench would otherwise be able to accommodate three to four passengers. An Airbus spokesperson says the company isn’t necessarily developing the bench, as it files “hundreds of patents each year.” But NBC notes the new design hasn’t faced the quick online backlash usually seen by other proposed seating alternatives for obese passengers. However, there is one aspect to the new seats that could give all passengers pause: They don’t recline.
Cosby Wants Home Insurance to Cover Legal Costs
Why anyone other than Bill Cosby should care about Bill Cosby’s homeowners insurance may at first seem a mystery. But the beleaguered comedian is apparently taking advantage of the personal injury coverage linked to his AIG policy to deflect his growing legal costs as he fights the defamation suits filed against him by 10 women in three states, the New York Times reports. Cosby is leaning on coverage he has on homes in both Massachusetts and California, each with $1 million in limited liability coverage, as well as additional liability coverage of $35 million he holds with wife Camille, court records show. Cosby is said to want to use the money through the policies for both his defense and to pay out any final judgment costs. It’s an uncommon way to use one’s home coverage, but the Times notes it’s been used in the past by the likes of Bill Clinton and OJ Simpson. Most homeowners policies include bodily injury coverage in case someone gets hurt on one’s property. But the rich often tack on umbrella policies that allow for personal injury coverage, including defamation lawsuits. AIG is currently ponying up legal fees for at least three of Cosby’s five defamation cases, but it’s battling in courts in Massachusetts, California, and Pennsylvania to get its money back, citing a “sexual misconduct exclusion.” But a California judge ruled in November that the policy wasn’t clearly worded and that the defamation suit brought against Cosby by Janice Dickinson was seeking damages for allegedly defamatory statements, not the alleged sexual assault. (AIG plans to appeal.) Meanwhile, a lawyer for seven women suing Cosby notes, “If the allegations are true, you can harm someone, and get somebody else to pay for your wrongdoing. God bless America! There is no financial responsibility.”
Indiana Jones Making Return to Big Screen
Indiana Jones is swinging back into theaters with Harrison Ford reprising the iconic role and Steven Spielberg directing, the AP reports. Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that the fifth film in the series will open July 19, 2019. The last Indiana Jones film was 2008’s poorly received Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. A new Indiana Jones film has long been rumored, occasionally with different actors taking over the role from the 73-year-old Ford. But the actor will return as his famous archaeologist shortly after reprising his other indelible character: Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Guy Knocked Off Boat Swims Campaign Finance Reports Hold Surprise Winners, Losers 7 Hours to Puerto Rico How Much Money Did Your Favorite Candidate Raise? Michigan man David Thompson sailed away from Puerto Rico, bound for Florida. Sunday night, he staggered into a Puerto Rico hotel restaurant bleeding, exhausted, and wearing only a shirt that he had fashioned into makeshift shorts. The 68-year-old retired engineer had been knocked off his sailboat by a wave in rough seas around 4 miles from shore. As he tried to climb back aboard, more waves took away his life jacket, which was connected to the boat, and most of his clothes as the boat drifted away. Thompson tells the AP that it took him seven hours to swim and float his way to a beach, where his legs were cut by coral as he made his way ashore. He found help at the hotel, where he was given food, water, and clothes. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where treatment for dehydration is expected to last at least four days. Thompson says thoughts of his 2-year-old granddaughter kept him going during the swim. “I wanted to see her and hug her again,” he says. “And I have a wife and a nice life. I didn’t want to die.”

John Kasich, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump, the final three Republican candidates running for president, began this month with drastically different campaign fortunes, new fundraising reports show. In one month, Cruz raised what Kasich has collected over the entire course of his long-shot bid. Trump has raised relatively little money as he “self-funds” his effort. On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders outraised Hillary Clinton for the second month in a row, but he still started March with about half as much cash on hand as Clinton. Some highlights from the latest campaign finance reports, per the AP: -Kasich had about $1.3 million in available campaign cash as this month began. Cruz continued to lap him fundraising: His $12 million in February roughly equals Kasich’s entire campaign haul, dating to last summer, which includes $3.4 million in February. -Trump loaned himself another $6.9 million, bringing his total self-loans to $24.4 million. Trump’s campaign manager has said the candidate has no intention of trying to recoup the money. And while Trump continues to boast about self-funding his campaign, he collected about $2 million in new contributions in February, bringing his total raised this cycle to $9.5 million. -Wealthy donors handed over $25 million last month to a super PAC backing Marco Rubio. And his campaign had its best month yet, raising about $9.6 million, though it still wasn’t enough to prevent an embarrassing loss to Trump in Florida and keep his campaign alive. - Jeb Bush spent $3.6 million before dropping out on Feb. 20, but he raised just $1.18 million over the month, including around $400,000 that he loaned to his own campaign, the Washington Post reports. Bush-allied super PAC Right to Rise raised $119 million over the course of the race and finished February with $16 million of it. - Chris Christie raised about $420,000 in February. The Republican suspended his campaign Feb. 9, after the New Hampshire primary. His campaign ended with roughly $200,000 more in debt than available cash.
After the California Coastal Commission imposed a breeding ban on its San Diego park, SeaWorld says it will end its orca breeding program for good. Breeding will end at all three US parks this year, meaning the killer whales now in captivity will be “the last generation,” SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby writes in the Los Angeles Times. The orcas, which have spent all or most of their lives under human care, won’t be released into the wild because they “could not survive,” Manby says, per WFTV. He adds SeaWorld will continue to be home to “stranded marine mammals like dolphins and sea lions that cannot be released back to the wild.” SeaWorld parks will also have “new, inspiring, natural orca encounters, rather than theatrical shows” by 2019.
- Ben Carson, who dropped out at the beginning of March, raised $5.7 million in February and had almost $5 million in cash when he exited. He was the top GOP fundraiser of the 2016 contest at the time he dropped out, but he also maintained above-average costs for raising that money. -Sanders’ campaign raised more than $43 million in February, outraising Clinton by about $14 million. He continued to draw substantial support from low-dollar donors. In February, more than 60% came from people who had given $200 or less to federal candidates in this election cycle. But Sanders also reported spending about $41 million in February. The Vermont senator started March with about $17 million in cash, about half as much as Clinton’s $31 million in available cash. Clinton’s super PAC, Priorities USA, raised a little less than $5 million in February, half its January haul. Still, the group began this month with $44 million to spend and plans to save much of it for the general election.
wORLD NEWS Seas Rising at Fastest Rate in Nearly 3K Years
It’s “extremely likely” that sea levels rose faster in the 20th century than at any other time in the previous 2,700 years “and the rise over the last two decades has been even faster,” scientists say. A new study—based on “reconstructions” of past sea levels from 24 areas around the world, plus tide gauges—finds global sea levels were steady for almost three millennia before they began to rise with the Industrial Revolution, reports USA Today. “We can say with 95% probability that the 20th-century rise was faster than any of the previous 27 centuries,” the lead author tells the Washington Post. Sea levels rose 5.5 inches from 1900 to 2000, or about 1.4 millimeters per year. NASA puts the current rate at 3.4 millimeters per year. Scientists expect sea levels to rise between 9.5 inches and 2 feet by 2100— if we stick to the climate treaty agreed upon in Paris. But a high emissions scenario could see seas rise by more than 4 feet. Another study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences seconds that finding but notes researchers didn’t consider the collapse of glaciers of the West Antarctic ice sheet, which “is hypothesized to be already underway.” There’s no surprise why: Humans burned fossil fuels, which produced greenhouse gases, which melted glaciers and warmed ocean waters, scientists say. If not for humans, sea levels might not have risen at all and thousands of coastal “nuisance” floods in the US would have been avoided, according to Climate Central. (Some 316 US cities may be partially submerged by 2100.)
Guy Changes Name to ‘Bacon Double Cheeseburger’
We get that if your name is Simon Smith, you might long for more exotic nomenclature. But this British bloke admits his recent name change was “the culmination of probably too many drinks in the pub,” per the Evening Standard. Smith, now officially known as Mr. Bacon Double Cheeseburger, says he and his pals were chatting about switching up names when his Burger King-inspired moniker was suggested. “It was largely the most ridiculous thing we could think of,” says the 33-year-old, whom Time calls a “hero.” “My friends were quite supportive of anything that makes me look silly, as good friends are.” He filled out the required application, and when the final papers arrived for him to sign, he was—”perhaps unfortunately,” the Standard notes—drinking with the same group of friends. They prodded him to seal the deal, for which he now says he has “no regrets.” Reaction to his new name has been mixed: He says his mom was “furious,” his dad thought it was “hilarious,” and his fiancee—well, she’ll probably make him change it back before the wedding, per the Standard. He travels a lot for work to the Far East, where he says they don’t realize “Bacon” isn’t a valid first name, but he concedes people he meets in Europe think it’s “pretty weird.” And he does keep his original name on his résumé, preferring to “drop that bombshell only after the contracts have been signed.” He’s still prickly about his erstwhile appellation: Cheeseburger took the Standard to task for reporting he was previously known as Sam Smith, tweeting, “You got my name wrong, it was SIMON SMITH. FFS. Sam Smith would be a ridiculous name.” Whatever his former name, the man now known as Cheeseburger is reaping at least one perk: Burger joints are offering him free bacon double cheeseburgers if he provides proof of the name change, the BBC reports.
WWII Hero’s Dog Tag Will Finally Return Home
Dorothy Hollingsworth was just 7 when her brother Tom left the family farm in Indiana to join the Army a few months before the US entered World War II. She never saw him again. Now, more than 70 years after Pfc. Thomas E. Davis was killed in one of the war’s final, major battles, a tangible reminder of her beloved sibling has been found on the Pacific island of Saipan—one of his Army dog tags. Cultural historian Genevieve Cabrera found the discolored metal tag sticking out of the soil of a farm field on Saipan in early 2014. It was embossed with Davis’ name, serial number, hometown, and other information. Cabrera recently gave the tag to members of Kuentai, a Japanbased organization that has found the remains of soldiers on Saipan. The group notified the AP this month, and the AP tracked down Davis’ family. Davis joined the Army in September 1941 and served in the 165th Infantry
Regiment of the 27th Infantry Division. He earned the Silver Star on Saipan in June 1944 for risking his own life to rescue a wounded comrade. He died on April 30, 1945, after he was shot by a Japanese sniper while again helping a wounded soldier, according to what Hollingsworth says military officials told the family. Four years later, his body was brought back for reburial in his hometown. While it is relatively common to find canteens, weapons, and even unexploded shells on Saipan, dog tags remain a rare find, Cabrera says. Kuentai representatives say they’ll arrange to meet the Davis family in the US to hand over the tag. Hollingsworth, 82, says a 57-year-old nephew named after Davis will likely get it. ShopInRI.com 8

Grilled Asparagus with Crispy Prosciutto and a Poached Egg By: Brian J. Lowney Photos: Soozie Sundlin - EG Photo
Spring is an amazing time for agriculture in Rhode Island. Once the weather warms up, beautiful, vibrant spring vegetables start to pop up at farmers markets, and April always brings the best asparagus of the year. Early spring asparagus is so tender and flavorful that it requires almost no preparation at all. This recipe takes a classic Italian combination- asparagus and prosciutto- and brings more depth with the char that you can only get on a grill and a runny poached egg. It takes only a few minutes to put this together, and makes a great breakfast or lunch, as well as a side dish or appetizer course at dinner. Preparation
By Chef Adam Baffoni Ingredients 2 lb asparagus, bottoms trimmed 5 slices Daniele prosciutto 4 large Baffoni’s eggs Salt and pepper, to taste Oil for cooking
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bring a pot of well salted water to a bare simmer. Once the oven is preheated, lay the prosciutto out on a sheet tray and bake until shriveled and slightly crispy. Remove the prosciutto to a cutting board and chop into small pieces resembling bacon bits. For the eggs, crack each into a small bowl or cup and drop each one into the simmering water. Be careful not to boil the water or the egg whites will become tough and rubbery. After about five minutes, when the whites are set and yolks are still runny, remove the eggs from the water. For the asparagus, preheat a grill to medium-high heat. Toss the asparagus in a large bowl with oil, salt and pepper. Lay the asparagus out on the grill and cook, turning every few minutes until it is nicely charred and tender all the way through. To serve, divide the asparagus between four plates, top each with an egg, a sprinkle of prosciutto, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. ShopInRI.com 12
Aficionados of authentic Mexican cuisine will savor an unforgettable experience when they visit Condesa Restaurante Mexicano, the Ocean’s State’s newest restaurant featuring delicious fare from South of the Border. The spacious eatery, which opened recently, is located at 970 Douglas Pike, Smithfield, in a building that formerly housed a Portuguese restaurant. “We have a simple menu with items we feel are good choices,” begins Ernesto Leon, who owns the restaurant with his brother Roberto. The brothers are natives of Los Angeles, and their parents hail from Jalisco, a western Mexican state located on the fringes of the Pacific Ocean and a region well known for its delicious food. Leon adds that the restaurant’s wellplanned menu primarily reflects cuisine usually found in Central and Southwestern Mexico, and features selections often lovingly served by mothers and grandmothers at family dinners, and seldom seen on restaurant menus. Many dishes served at Condesa are vegetarian or vegan. 13 13ShopInRI.com ShopInRI.com
“Everything is made from scratch,” Leon continues, adding that the owners and chefs plan to work with local purveyors to accomplish their goal to use fresh local ingredients as often as possible, to prepare aperitivos (appetizers), sopas (soups), ensaladas (salads), tacos, burritos, enchiladas and an extensive list of especialidades de la casa (house specialties). Guests who want to start with an appetizer should try the Quesa Fundida, made with grilled Chihuahua cheese, topped with Mexican chorizo and pico de gallo. Seafood lovers will enjoy the Jalapeno Calamari, a zesty appetizer that offers a new twist on Ocean State favorites and combines crispy calamari with fried jalapeno peppers, both lavishly garnished with chipotle aioli.
For vegans and guests who enjoy a bit of culinary excitement, there is guacamole prepared tableside which can be enjoyed with one of Condesa’s refreshing Margaritas ,or a signature cocktail. The fullservice bar also offers 10 varieties of beer on tap, including four labels imported from Mexico. Leon says that one of the menu’s most delicious items is Cochinita Pibil, an entrée popular in the Yucatan, which features slow cooked pork prepared in an Annatto Achiote marinade and topped with flavorful pickled red onion. The popular dish is served with rice and beans. Another favorite of fans of authentic Mexican cuisine is the Chiles en Nogada, a Poblano pepper generously stuffed with ground beef, raisins, diced pears, apples and plantains, and topped with a walnut sauce, garnished with pomegranate. The dish, often served in Central
Mexico, is also served with rice and beans. Followers of a vegan diet will savor the Vegetarian Burrito, featuring fire roasted corn, grilled vegetables and sweet potatoes, all rolled into a large flour tortilla, which is then covered with salsa verde and toasted pumpkin seeds. Condesa’s lunch menu, served daily until 3 p.m., offers items such as the Mexican Burger, a juicy hamburger topped with chorizo, jalapenos, avocado, Chihuahua cheese and served with french fries.

Your eyes do not deceive you. This month’s feature is indeed a white Pinot Noir. Most people are surprised to see what has been widely accepted as one of the most popular styles of wine and has an equally delicious lighter offering. During the winemaking process, all grapes give off a light colored juice when pressed. The Pinot Noir that usually graces your table gets its deep red hue from contact with the grape skins. Grown on the rolling, green hills of the Willamette Valley in the cool climate of Oregon, Emerson Vineyard’s White Pinot Noir is made with 100% Pinot Noir grapes that are pressed immediately after being harvested, giving the wine a beautiful apricot color. Expect aromas of orange blossom, peaches, pears and ripe strawberries. The well-balanced, dry wine brings forth flavors of juicy strawberry, baked apple, honeysuckle, and a finish of toasted almonds on your palate. The Emerson White Pinot Noir is perfect to enjoy with creamy soups and stews, pasta dishes with lots of herbs like sage and basil, white pizza, grilled fish, and roasted chicken. All forms of Pinot Noir go great with mushroom dishes; so if you’re a fun guy [see what I did there?] or gal, go wild! Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails
by Al Milukas
CAJUN CHICKEN BREASTS I learned most of my Cajun dishes from the cookbooks of one of the masters: Chef Paul Prudhomme. Sometimes I'd use some of his great seasoning ideas in my own dishes. This was one of them. I would cook huge batches of these chicken breasts for my parties and there would never be any leftovers! Double-dipping in the seasoning mix is a messy step, but it makes them extra crunchy and flavorful. And they freeze well, so make extras! Cut the chicken breasts into manageable pieces. If they're thick, slice them horizontally to make two thinner breasts. A thick piece of chicken won't cook all the way through.
Ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons sweet paprika 1 teaspoon granulated onion 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1 teaspoon basil 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon gumbo file (file powder), optional 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken tenders or breasts 3 eggs oil for frying (I like using avocado oil and some pork fat for flavor)
Combine the flour, salt, paprika, onion, garlic, basil, white pepper, cayenne, black pepper, thyme, and gumbo file in a bowl. Mix well. In another bowl, crack and scramble the eggs.

Cheddar and Bacon Biscuits with Maple Butter Whether you are looking for a sweet and savory breakfast recipe or a comforting companion to your dinner plan, these warm, flavorful biscuits with a southern flair are a great addition to any meal. With little hints of cheese and chives and lots of smoky bacon, along with just a small helping of sweet maple butter drizzled on top, it’s a winning combination! Plus, did I mention buttermilk? I think buttermilk makes everything better, and I always opt to use when I can. By Kelly Paterson
Ingredients 2 cups of all-purpose flour 1tbsp. of baking powder 1 tsp salt ¼ cup of chives (chopped) Half a pound of bacon (about 10 diced slices) 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese 5 tbsps. of butter (cubed and chilled) Reserved bacon grease after cooking bacon (about 2 tbsps.) ¼ cup of buttermilk 1/3 cup of milk maple butter ingredients 2 tbsps. of butter ¼ cup of real maple syrup
Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Dice bacon and cook in small skillet until crispy. Remove from skillet (remember to save 2 tbsps. of bacon grease and set aside), then place the cooked bacon in a plate lined with a paper towel to absorb the rest of the grease. Cube the butter and place in a small bowl in the freezer until you need it. Next, in a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder, salt and chives and mix it together well. Then add the chilled butter and bacon grease using a pastry cutter and mix it thoroughly. Add in your shredded cheese and diced bacon. Then make a well in the center of the bowl, and pour in your buttermilk and milk, and mix with a spatula. If the mixture is too dry, add a little more buttermilk until the dough just starts to hold together. Use either a cookie scoop or you can eye ball it and use your hands, and roll them into 2 inch balls and place on a lined cookie sheet a few inches apart. Bake for 15 minutes, and rotate halfway through if you would like to evenly brown them. While they are baking take 5 tbsps. of butter and ¼ cup of maple syrup and heat in a sauce pan on the stove. Once your biscuits are done, transfer to wire rack to let them cool just a bit, and pour warm maple butter drizzle on top, and then serve. ShopInRI.com 30

Wayland Square Fine Wine & Spirits By Kara Caldarone
CRANSTON
From steel to grapes, owner Bob Russell’s passion and hobby for collecting fine wines progressed to the purchase of Wayland Square Fine Wine & Spirits several years ago. It is now located at 18A South Angell Street, Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to owning Wayland Square Fine Wine & Spirits, Russell owned and operated a steel company in Warwick, Rhode Island for thirty years. After selling the steel business, Russell traveled extensively to wine regions around the world. “My love of wine began when I was a student at the University of Rhode Island (URI.) I tried every beer possible and wanted something different, so I started buying wine,” says Russell. The first bottle of wine Russell collected was a 1963 Fonseca Vintage Port, Portugal. Buying Wayland Square Fine Wine & Spirits was a natural fit for Russell, considering he has always had a substantial wine collection at home, coupled with the fact he simply loves and appreciates wines. His favorite wine is Amarone - made from air-dried grapes and produced in the Veneto region near Venice - a bold and full-bodied red with a velvet feel while sipping. “I consider Wayland Square Fine Wine & Spirits more of a wine boutique than a liquor store; we give personal service to everyone that walks in our shop,” says Russell. The wine cellar houses an incredible choice of wines, from vintage to specialty. “We have a large selection of wines from Europe to Napa, ranging in price from $9.00 to over $2,000,” says Russell.
Russell says he’s not a wine snob and neither are the wine experts he employs at the shop. His motto, “You don’t have to spend a lot of money on wine for it to taste good.” Sixty percent of Russell’s sales are from wine and the rest are divided equally among beers and spirits. “We offer a full range of domestic and craft beers and fine spirits as well,” says Russell. You won’t find any tobacco products at his shop, but if you can’t find a wine (which is unlikely) that you like, Russell will get it for you. Russell moved his shop from 210 Wayland Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island a few months ago to the new location on Angell Street because he needed more space to accommodate more wine. The atmosphere inside his shop is warm and inviting— from wine novice to connoisseur; everyone is welcome. Every Thursday night Russell hosts a wine tasting from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For additional information, please contact Bob at: 401-351-9463. ShopInRI.com 32

Betty’s Candies - Love at First Bite By Kara Caldarone
By Kara Caldarone In a time when people are consumed with technology, texting is the new phone conversation, and big-box retail stores continue to pollinate our country. Noon Design Shop, located at 18 Post Road, Warwick, RI, defies the odds of owning and operating successful small-independent shops throughout the country.
Jewelry, letterhead, greeting cards, lotions, body scrubs, candles, perfume, tea towels, and more. In all three locations, customers can watch individual artists do what they do best; creating beautiful and unique designs, using high-quality materials, and organic ingredients.
Founded in 2009, Nora Alexander and Maie Webb own and operate Noon Design in three locations— CA, NJ, and RI. “I met Maie while attending RISD; we were college roommates. We got along very well living together and soon became best friends. We’re more like sisters now,” says Nora.
While attending college at RISD, Nora and Maie shared a love for design, a goal to someday open a business together and earn a living doing what they were both passionate about: creating authentic products made from American materials. They succeeded, tenfold. Their creative backgrounds, training, and education, balance each other.
Their product line, as they refer to as A Homegrown Lifestyle Brand, consists of: American handmade

Noon Design moved their Rhode Island shop from Downtown Providence to Pawtuxet Village in February 2016, and opened its doors this month. When I interviewed Nora for their story, she had just finished up with a 35,000 order—printed lemon embroidery silkscreen tea towels. They received the order in December 2015, began production in February 2016 under a looming shipment date of March 1, 2016. “We recruited family, friends, neighbors, and any one we could find to help us. We rolled each towel individually [35,000 of them,] worked around the clock, and made our deadline. An incredible accomplishment for us,” says Nora. 20% of their business is online, 40% retail, and 40% wholesale. “We love Pawtuxet Village, I grew up here, and many of my friends from high school have opened up businesses in the Village as well. It is a rewarding experience to do what I love supported by family and friends,” says Nora. Visit www. noondesignshop.com, for more information. ShopInRI.com 34
Paula Pecchia-Esposito the new owner of Betty’s Candies now located at: 2197 Broad Street, Cranston, RI. Little Falls Bakery & Cafe for five minutes or 30 minutes, St.Germain makes time to cultivate positive-longstanding relationships.
Meet the Chef
Revolution - Pawtuxet Village - Warwick
Consistency in what the café provides its’ customers and seeing St. Germain in shorts regardless of how cold a Rhode Island, winter gets is part of the lure. St. Germain and Donnelly are very active in the perseveration of Pawtuxet Village as well as promoting local artists, which is a big part of this little community, by exhibiting their photography, sculptures, pottery, oil & acrylics, watercolors, embroidery, wood inlay, ceramics, and music. There’s a waitlist of about a year for people to display their work, and the café never takes a commission on what gets sold. It all goes to the artists.
Little Falls Bakery & Café, located at 2166 Broad Street, Cranston, RI, is not a stop-in-once type of place. What lacks in square footage, this bakery and café makes up for in hospitality—tenfold. Part of its charm and what separates the café from others is apparent the moment you walk through the doors: groups of people from different geographic areas, professions, and education melding as one. “We wanted a place where people come in as strangers and leave as friends,” says owner Jeff St. Germain. (The name Little Falls is an English translation of Native Indian “Pawtuxet” meaning “River of Little Falls.”) Part of the café’s charm is watching people push tables together, rearrange chairs, and share newspaper sections by leaning across from one another—an unrehearsed choreography without words or music but in complete sync.
If St.Germain had to pick an item that his customers love, hands down it’s their pizza. “ Our New York style pizza is made with fresh ingredients, hand-thrown whole wheat crusts, garlic rubs, herbs, and different cheeses. We took the original recipe from the previous owners’ Michael and Gunna Bedrosian and added another level to it. We stay open until 8: 00 p.m. on Fridays, and our pizza-to-go is becoming a family tradition,” says St. Germain. From sandwiches, quiches, soups, bakery treats (bagels, croissants, scones, muffins, coffee cake to list only a few of their delectable pastries) vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options to specialty coffees and teas, there’s something for everyone at Little Falls Bakery & Café. Don’t be surprise if you see a line out the door when they open at 6:00 a.m.; everything is homemade and worth the wait. To view their complete menu, hours of operation and a peak of local artwork, visit www.littlefallscafe. com or call (401) 781-8010.

The Cure for Stressed Winter Hair Is your hair really charged, or are there only a few extremely nappy strands that have been causing havoc.
By Christine Gonsalves Now that the winter is over, it is definitely time for some extra hair care. It takes only a few tricks to successfully bring your stressed winter hair back from the cold season. So without further ado, let’s talk about your do...(I just couldn’t resist) One of the most serious hair and skin problems in winter is the dry air. This does not only apply to heated rooms but also to the outside air. The following law of physics applies: The colder the air, the lower the humidity. Add two more problems for your hair and scalp in winter. With every one degree temperature drop, the sebaceous glands reduce their sebum production by 10 % until they completely stop all sebum production. There is only one way to help stressed winter hair. Pamper your hair and scalp with gentle care and rich products.
You still have flyaway hair? You should use a leave-in cure from now on. Leave-in preparations do not just condition your hair, but also build a thin film around your hair to protect it. The classic solution: Hairspray, also has an anti-static effect. Spray it on your hair from a distance of 8 to 12 inches and spread it gently over your hair with your hands. That will take care of the static! Innovative hair sprays prevent hair strands from sticking together. To take advantage of these formulations, you must however hold the spray nozzle at least 12 inches away from your hair and keep the spray can in constant motion.
Some Tips On How to Tame Flyaway Hair
Before using the hair spray, make sure that the spray nozzle is not gummed up. Otherwise, the hair spray will not leave the can as a fine mist but rather in sticky spurts.
Flyaway hair wildly stands up from your scalp because of its electrical charge.
Apply hair spray as follows if you want to give your hair more volume:
That happens when hair is very dry. It is up to you to use the proper care and restore the right moisture balance
Shake your hair while holding your head upside down...Be careful of your neck...
In case you use a straightening tool (flat iron), you should always protect your hair by first applying special styling products.
Then throw your hair back again... without too much force.
Never apply straightening tools (flat irons) to wet hair! This heats the water in the hair to the boiling point with literally hair-raising damaging effects.

Such unruly hair strands are often hard to tame. However, anti-frizz products will bring them in line.
Lift individual strands of hair, and from a shorter distance apply a little hair spray underneath the strands. Allow the hair spray to dry before moving to the next strand
Gold-plated combs are designed to neutralize the charged hair strands.
Tip for women with bob haircuts: Slightly lift the covering hair and apply the hair spray at an angle from below toward the hair ends.
Usually, a brush with natural bristles will also do the trick.
This provides marvelous hold to bevelled side hair.

Personal Training - Group Fitness Classes Infrared Sauna - Yoga - Massage & Reflexology Evolvefitness4life.com - 2225 Plainfield Pike - Johnston, RI Well here we are, springtime. The time of year everyone feels the need to get in shape. Bathing suits are just around the corner so like January, April is a month to start exercising. As a fitness instructor, it’s hard for me to grasp or understand why people wait until they feel a reason to exercise. It should be part of your routine. I have learned, although exercise and living healthy has become much more popular, I am still in the minority making it part of my everyday routine. It shouldn’t just be about looking good in that bathing suit, but rather about being healthy all year. Like I always say, when a decision to make this a lifestyle you realize it’s about being healthy and the weight loss is a fringe benefit. It just happens! But ok, for those who feel now it’s spring, with summer nearing and the need to get in shape, the best advice I have is to find a “fun group fitness activity”. It’s motivating to be active with other people. I personally try to make my group fitness classes as fun as possible. I do not want people watching the clock waiting for the class to end. I think we achieve that. I teach every day at 6 am. If it weren’t enjoyable we wouldn’t have a crowd at 6 am. Find a fun activity to do with others! If you’re not enrolled at a gym or have an interesting activity, find a partner and walk. Do not stroll, power walk! Push each other. Again, having someone to exercise with is much more motivating you will end up walking much further than if alone. I have two friends, one I walk with - one I run with. My friend Lori and I walk once a week and this became a great therapy session. We discuss everything in our lives from the good, to the bad, to the stress, etc.; before we know it we’ve walked five miles. My friend Michelle and I run every weekend. A funny story is one weekend we asked another friend, Joan, to join us. Joan couldn’t understand why we both had shuffles for music. She asked “how do you talk to each other?” We laughed and said “we don’t, we listen to our music”. The point is just having someone to run with makes us go a lot further than if we were running alone. We often remind each other of that. We say, “We never talk but just running together pushes us to go those extra miles”. With or without a partner, do something for YOU. Feeling good physically allows you feel great mentally. Life becomes a better place.

Remember, we are not all meant to be size 0, 2, 4 or even 6. We all have a healthy weight for our body type. Reaching that healthy weight and maintaining it is a necessity. Not sure what your healthy weight is? Ask your doctor or do an online search for a BMI Calculator; Body Mass Index. Height and weight must be measured to calculate your BMI. Using the online calculator is very simple, plug in your height and weight and it will calculate what your BMI is. Using the table below can tell you where you fall.
If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range. If your BMI is 18.5 to 24.9, it falls within the normal or healthy weight range. If your BMI is 25.0 to 29.9, it falls within the overweight range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obese range. Upon reaching a healthy weight, be happy in your own skin; maintain it and enjoy life. Do not try to be someone or something you’re not. That is a sure way to be disappointed. I enjoy writing these articles because not only does it come from my heart, I speak from practice. I want to share my experiences and my advice with as many people as possible. Exercise is so important. Yes, it is a priority in my life, but it is also important for my health. Sure we all want to look good, but if you are at a healthy weight and happy on the inside, it doesn’t matter what size you are, you will be beautiful. Quotes: • “Time and health are two precious assets that we don’t recognize and appreciate until they have been depleted”. • “Do not let it be too late.” Take care of your body now”! • “No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch”. • “Do not get down or lose motivation if you are not seeing the results right away”. • “The weight loss will absolutely come - just don’t give up”! By: Kara Caldarone White Cross Pharmacy, located at 1057 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence, RI is the state’s futuristic leader in pharmaceuticals. That began in 1933, with two brothers…Orestes Iacobucci and Primo Iacobucci, who opened up White Cross Pharmacy on Charles Street, Providence, RI. Both educated at Rhode Island College of Pharmacy (now URI), they combined their mutual dreams of owning a pharmacy. The Iacobucci brother’s business became the neighborhood success story. With decades of growth, Primo was ready to retire. So in 1952, Orestes
Iacobucci became sole proprietor of White Cross Pharmacy. Which (then) was a combination of: general store, liquor store, soda fountain hotspot, and pharmacy. Following in his father’s footsteps, Robert Iacobucci, a 1967 graduate of URI, joined his father to bring White Cross Pharmacy to the next level of success. Orestes Iacobucci was ready to retire after decades of growth and dedication, and he did. Passing the legacy onto his son Robert. With son Robert, newest owner

of the pharmacy at the helm, a long-term care division was officially added in early 1980— servicing nursing and assisted living facilities, as well as residential group homes. “We continue to evolve,” says Robert Iacobucci. “We let our business take us where we need to be.” Realizing this vision, Iacobucci increased White Cross Pharmacy from one location to three and redirected the business’ focus from retail to longterm-healthcare communities. Keeping up with the pharmacy’s growth, Robert bought a second location in North Providence, RI. Several years later, he added a 3rd location: The Moshassuck Medical Building, Providence, and sold its retail division. “We were developing our niche that proved a success,” says Robert. Right on cue, 3rd generation, Bob Iacobucci, Jr., climbed on board.
“After graduating from Boston College in 1993, I went to URI’s College of Pharmacy. White Cross Pharmacy was (and remains) a leader in the industry. I wanted to be part of that,” says Bob. After graduating from URI, Bob worked side-by-side with Robert, learning and growing the business, as his father did.

In 1997, Bob was promoted to pharmacist in charge and within a few years, pharmacy’s director. In 2008, Beth (Iacobucci) Brown joined the family pharmacy as the general business manager. Beth went to URI for business.
In 2014, White Cross Pharmacy introduced the MedPack. (White Cross Pharmacy designed the package.) For brevity, MedPack is a packaging system that organizes patient’s medication into individual pouches, labeled with medication name, the dose, and time to be taken—safer for patients, easier for nurses.
With son Bob and daughter Beth in place, Robert was able to direct his full attention on improving the pharmacy, as well as increase its customer base in long-term care. On technology: White Cross Pharmacy was one the first in RI to introduce computers. Quick-

Looking for a Pet? Adopt! If you’ve been thinking about a getting a pet, but you are not sure if you should go to a breeder or a shelter, here are few reasons you may want to consider adopting: - Save a Life There are over 50 shelters in America with millions of dogs and cats waiting for their forever home. More than 2.7 million are due to be euthanized. - Less Costly When you adopt a pet most of the vet bills are paid for. You normally don’t have to have the pet spay or neutered, etc. The shelters often have a vet visit before the pet is adopted. By the time you get the pet they are all up to date on shots and have a clean bill of health. - Fight Puppy Mills There are Puppy Mills just breeding & breeding pups. The moms are stuck in small cages their whole life. Their only purpose is to breed puppies. They are never let out of the cages for walks or human love. They often end up running in fast circles in the cage due to brain disfunction. The more people go to shelters to rescue animals the closer we get to shutting down these inhumane puppy mills. The puppy mills pay drivers to drive the puppies to pet stores all over the country. It has been proven that if there is a sick puppy in route that a pet store won’t accept, they get thrown into dumpsters alive, and left to die. - House Trained When you rescue a pet, the odds are that pet has al-

ready been house trained. The shelters often have someone working with and training the puppies if they have not yet been trained. - Good for you Health Last month I wrote an article on how pets help with human depression. Animals reduce stress bringing calmness which may reduce blood pressure, changes ones mood, and provides you with companionship and love. These are just a few of the health benefits of a four paw friend. - CHANGE AN INNOCENT ANIMALS LIFE The best part of rescuing an animal from a shelter is you will be giving that animal a chance at life!!!!! Animals are much smarter than people give them credit. Just because they don’t speak our language does not mean they don’t communicate. Pet adoption is one of the most compassionate acts one can do. These babies deserve to be loved. Sheltered pets have a bad rap at times. People tend to think they are in there for a reason. Maybe it was a “bad” pet and someone no longer wanted it, maybe it has an illness, etc. As I mentioned earlier, when a pet is at a shelter they are always seen by a vet before being adopted out and if there is an aggressive pet, the shelters are very upfront as they want to ensure the owner is going to keep this pet for the life of the pet. You must go through an application/ approval process as they want to match the pet with a compatible owner. Now that spring weather is here, it’s time to get out and walk with your dog! Your dog will be excited to get outside and sniff everything and put stuff in his mouth! But how do you keep those sticks, rock and other contraband out of your dog’s mouth? We like to teach the cue “Leave It” for those occasions! Here’s how you teach “Leave It.” Leave It is defined as “don’t put your mouth on it in the first place.” You can teach your puppy to leave anything (the sticks, rocks, trash, etc.).
Teach the Concept Hold a treat in your closed hand. Hold it in front of your puppy’s nose. He will likely try to lick it, paw at it, sniff it, etc., to try to get the treat. Hold your hand still and wait until your puppy gives up (“that’s not working!”) and then click and reward when he backs away from it! Once he’s backed away a few times, then put the cue on it. Say “Leave It”, then put your closed hand in front of your puppy’s nose. Wait until he backs off, then click and reward.
Practice with Contraband Once your dog knows the basic concept, you can teach your dog to leave all the contraband in that he loves to get! Get something that your dog loves to grab (a stick, for example) and hold it in one hand. Say leave it and wait for him to back off. Click when he backs off and give him a treat from your other hand. Repeat this with all contraband items.
Practice On the Ground Repeat the exercise above, but with food on 65 ShopInRI.com
the ground instead. Or you can use trash with a food smell, etc. Put food or trash on the ground and practice “Leave It.” Be sure to cover up the item with your hand if he dives for it! As your pup gets good with the object on the ground, then you can try walking by the item. Begin further away and practice getting closer as your puppy is ready. When your puppy notices the item tell him “Leave It” and reward any response of looking toward you. It’s important that you practice “Leave It” with the objects your dog is most enticed by! By practicing “Leave It,” you may be able to avoid dangerous items when you are out for your walk in this spring weather!

By Kara Caldarone Growing up, Christine Serpa-Flyntz and Lynn A. Serpa (who are sisters) were intrigued with their mothers, Janet’s profession. She was head of Virology at a Rhode Island Laboratory for over 30 years. While most teenagers were waitressing or working retail for extra money after school and during college breaks, Christine and Lynn Serpa worked with their mother in a lab. CLS Mold Testing, LLC is a women-owned business, located at 67 Bramble Lane, West Warwick, RI, formed in March 1995 by Christine Serpa-Flyntz. “Although I was a stay-at-home mom of four children, I wanted something for myself as well as put my degree to use,” says Flyntz. She is a certified residential and commercial mold inspector, completed thousands of inspections throughout Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. “My sister, Lynn, did not join me for a few years which is another reason why I opened this business; she complained to me every day about her commute to CT,” says Flyntz. “It’s true. I did complain to my sister every day about my long commute, but at the time she opened CLS Mold Testing, I wasn’t financially ready for a pay reduction to come on board,” says Lynn Serpa. “Lynn has extensive knowledge and training as an environmental-micro biologist and is an expert in our field. She was my missing piece in the business before joining me, ” says Flyntz. Serpa is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. Her career in environmental industry spans more than 20 years. Prior to joining CLS Mold Testing LLC, she worked as a laboratory director for BEC in Norwalk, Connecticut for five years, and at BAL Laboratory for nine years. 10 RI Local

Although mold can cause serious and sometimes fatal complications, many states including Rhode Island, do not require mold testing before purchasing or renting residential properties. Ask An Expert Spring Exterior Maintenance Checklist My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting and I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column!
After perhaps the kindest winter that many of us Rhode Islanders have ever seen, Spring is upon us. With its annual arrival, there are a number of things that are often looked at as a “must” in terms of home maintenance; here is a recommended Spring “to-do” list to help focus on these areas: -Exterior washing of home – does your home have dirt, mold, or mildew on it? – this is a great time of year to get it washed!! -Window washing (exterior & interior) – many people clean their windows twice a year (once in the Spring & once in the Fall) – if embarking on this yourself, remember to use a squeegee vs. just a paper towel/newspaper/etc., by themselves. -Spring yard cleanup – removal of leaves/debris that may have gathered from over the winter, trim bushes/trees, dethatch lawn – Spring is the time to set your yard’s foundation for the rest of the year. -Gutter system check – make sure all downspouts are properly connected and clean/flush gutter system to make sure there are no leaks and the system is functioning as it should be. -Inspection of paint/stain coatings – inspect anything that may be painted/stained outside – this includes the house itself, deck areas, any sheds or detached garage/other buildings – by doing this, if any issues of peeling are noticed, they can be nipped in the bud so that they do not lead to bigger issues (rotted wood, a paint job needing to be entirely re-done sooner than ideal, etc.). This basic list should serve as a good guideline to get you going. Spring is a tremendous time of year! By jumping on these maintenance items as early as possible, the stage is set to really to be able to enjoy the exterior of your property in the months to come - for what many consider the most beautiful part of the calendar in the Ocean State!! About Tom Lopatosky Tom Lopatosky has run his own carpentry and painting business in Providence since 1995; LOPCO Contracting – the “Personable, Particular Professionals” – specializes in carpentry and exterior & interior painting. Preparing Your Home to Sell This Spring
This spring and summer is anticipated to be extremely busy in the Real Estate world. Home prices are going up and buyers are eager to purchase while interest rates remain low. If you’re thinking of selling your home, these tips are very important.
1.
Curb Appeal is KEY – Make buyers want to come inside! Trim bushes and trees back so your home is more visible. Sweep and power wash the front of your home and driveway to remove any leftover salt and dirt from the winter. Clean your windows so they are sparkling clean. Put a fresh coat of paint on your front door, as well as fresh mulch and colorful flowers, so your home POPS.
2. Eliminate CLUTTER – “Less is more” is a saying
that is so important when selling your home. If you pack away everything but the bare minimum, your home will not only look larger but also appear cleaner and more appealing to buyers. Go through your closets and purge anything you haven’t used or worn in the last year. Packed closets will appear as though the home doesn’t offer enough storage.
3. Pre-inspection – A pre-list home inspection is not
only informative but can actually help a seller get the most profit. For a few hundred dollars, an inspector will come out and give you a list of recommended repairs just as if you were a buyer. When you repair your home prior to a buyer requesting it, you position yourself better. For example, a buyer may ask for a $500 credit for a repair that would have cost you $100 to fix or that the repair is done by a licensed contractor, when you in fact could do it yourself.
4.
Pricing – Prices are rising however, home owners should never price their home based upon a value they see online. Overpricing a property actually does more
harm than good. When a home is overpriced, it stays on the market and becomes stale and stigmatized. In order to avoid this, you must price your home based on comparable properties that have sold within the last 6 months. Comparable meaning; similar square footage, upgrades, number of bedrooms/ bathrooms, garage, etc. When a home is priced correctly, it should result in a lot of activity and a sale relatively quickly. Often times when a home is positioned correctly in the market place, a bidding war will take place and sellers will often end up selling for over the asking price.
5. Hire an expert – Hiring a realtor is so important
in order to get your home sold for the most amount of money in the shortest amount of time. We know how to price homes, we know how to market your home effectively, we are professional negotiators, we know the market conditions, and all of the paperwork is OUR responsibility! You wouldn’t perform surgery on yourself, so why try to sell your home yourself ? Hire an expert! I look forward to serving you, your friends, and your family! Supporting Our Veterans By Karen Dalton, CHC
Karen Dalton, daughter of US Marine, Ronald Dalton, wanted to take her health coach certification and do something impactful. There started her journey in creating Dare to Dream Ranch, a non profit, military retreat for service members, veterans and their families experiencing emotional challenges from warlike PTSD, anxiety and depression. Dare to Dream Ranch offers alternative therapy programs like equine therapy, yoga, horticulture therapy, nutritional cooking, fly tying and fly fishing, creative arts, woodworking workshop, and more. Not only is the gardening therapeutic, but a portion of the produce from the garden will go back to our homeless and at risk service members, veterans and their families, to increase access to healthy food. The nutritional cooking will help teach them about the “food mood” connection. What you eat can either exasperate or reduce the symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Each of our events are meant to accomplish three goals: 1. Awareness about PTSD, veterans homelessness and veteran suicide rates (22 a day and where this number comes from). 2. Awareness about available resources. 3. Raise funds to offer our programs, FREE to our clients. ShopInRI.com 84

Gaulin Insurance
Commercial, residential, auto, and life insurance—even insurance for a popular board game—Chris Gaulin has Rhode Island covered. Chris is the third generation to operate Gaulin Insurance, a family business that’s been a part of the Cranston community since 1961, Chris has inherited quite a legacy, and it’s a job he takes extremely seriously. “I want to pass on what I learned from my dad to my team, to help us be successful,” he says. Success for Chris means not just selling policies; it means doing it with integrity by educating his customers to make informed choices, and ensuring that “the right person has the right policy.”
Chris is carrying on the 55-year family tradition of providing the customer care that has made Gaulin Insurance a success. An integral part of the Cranston business community for decades, with an office located near Cranston City Hall, and membership in the Chamber of Commerce for 20 years—not to mention a softball team sponsor that made the playoffs last season—is why we like and trust this local businesses. They know what we need, because they know us and we know them. And no matter what type of insurance policy you need, Gaulin Insurance can find one that fits. When longtime customer and Bananagrams inventor Abe Nathanson realized his board game would need to be insured, he came to Gaulin. Who better to know what his business insurance needs were than the local company who knew him, his family, his business? This has been the formula for success for Gaulin Insurance since 1961, and it’s a formula Chris Gaulin intends to use for years to come.
Gaulin Insurance is in a good position to do just that— with a team that has over 100 years of combined experience, they are uniquely qualified to meet local residents’ insurance needs. And while being insurance pros has helped this local business thrive, its longevity is owed in part to the fact that Gaulin and his employees live and work in the community they serve. That’s how Gaulin Insurance is now, and how it’s been since 1961. As the founder of Gaulin Insurance, Edward Gronneberg lived downtown and walked to work every day, a practice that was undoubtedly a factor in his reaching his 96th birthday this year. Gronneberg’s sonin-law, Stephen Gaulin, bought the business in 1983 when Gronneberg retired, and continued operations in downtown Cranston, while joining the Chamber of Commerce in 1996. When Stephen Gaulin decided to retire, he sold the business in January 2016 to son Chris who had been working with his dad since 2003. Disney’s ZOOTOPIA
By: Hannah Burke
Animals, not humans, once ruled the earth. So what happened? Did we evolve faster, or will the animals be just like us one day? Zootopia answers that very question. Judy Hopps, a young and inspired bunny who wanted to become a cop. After a scary incident with a fox, Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) persisted and became the first ever rabbit officer. However, her chief didn’t believe in her, and Judy was sent to parking duty. An odd encounter with a fox named Nick Wilde ( Jason Bateman) turns her job upside-down. All foxes are innocent, right? Think again. After investigating, Judy finds out that Nick is a ‘pawpsicle’ selling, no good sneak. After forcing him to stop, Judy is humiliated and her dreams of being a true cop crushed. The next day, Judy is almost fired for chasing a runaway weasel, and while in Chief Bogo’s (Idris Elba) office comes upon a case about Emmitt Otterton, an otter that’s been missing for 10 days. Judy willingly told Mrs. Otterton that she’d find Mr. Otterton, and is forced to find him in 48 hours by the chief or she’ll be fired. After getting a lead, Judy is pulled right back to Nick. She makes some sly moves and Nick is forced into joining Judy on the case. They are lead on a great adventure and get caught by Mr. Big (Maurice LaMarche), a thieving crime boss that lives in Tundra Town. In an unexpected turn of events, Mr. Big’s daughter was saved by Judy and they are let go. Big sends them to Manchas ( Jesse Corti), his chauffeur. The pair travels to the Rainforest District and meets with Manchas. In a shocking discovery, Judy finds out that Emmitt (the otter) was the one who attacked the limo. Manchas suddenly goes ‘savage’ and tries to kill Judy and Nick. They escape and the ZPD arrives only to find that Manchas disappeared and Bogo forces Judy to give up her badge. Nick corrects the chief and they
head back to Zootopia. Zootopia is a great movie that lends itself a lot to our own present-day culture. It’s unique in its own way with cities dedicated to rodents and specific groups of species. Right down to the hamster tubes, tiny doors, cars for giraffes and lots more. The movie also relates a lot to racism today. Ninety percent of the population is prey and 10 percent predator. Over the course of the movie, many animals prove that racism is true in every culture or species, whether it be a predator as a mayor or not being trusted. The movie also provides a strong message. The movie tells people that everything is possible, no matter the ups and downs. Judy Hopps is a strong image for young girls, showing them that girls are strong and can make an impact too. This is important because today girls are affected by the way they’re treated. We aren’t appreciated and respected. I give Zootopia 5 out of 6 diamonds. The movie was a very clear relation to today, and the perception of racism in today’s culture. The movie itself provides a clear message that anything is possible, and that not everything 93 93 ShopInRI.com ShopInRI.com

iving in New England the weather can be pretty unpredictable. It’s cold when it’s supposed to be hot, it’s hot when it’s supposed to be cold; you just never know. One place that caters to both the hot and the cold is SunFire Hearth and Patio, located in Barrington, RI. This place has quite a long history. Owners Kerry O’Brien and his wife Erin bought the building a year and half ago. Originally, the store opened up in 1949, dealing with wrought iron railings and iron work. Back then it was called Economy Ornamental Iron Works. Somewhere between the 60’s and the 70’s, the company got involved in the home heating aspect of the industry. They started carrying various stoves and fireplaces, and eventually it was more known for its hearth products while the metal works products were dwindling. They

went a step further and included patio furniture as part of their line in the early ‘80s. This led to another eventual name change of New England Hearth and Patio. Kerry worked there prior to buying the building, so he knew the industry well, along with all of its clients. New England Hearth and Patio had closed its doors four years ago. It was one of the oldest stove shops in the northeast and people were very upset because they had been going there for so long. Kerry decided to take a shot at reopening it under SunFire Hearth and Patio, since it was a passion of his and he loved what he did. So far its worked out for him and his wife. A Complete Collision Repair Solution
Knowing at an early age what you are meant to do in life and never veering from it into your adulthood is remarkable, to say the least. Randy Bottella, owner of Reliable Collision, located at 24 Begonia Street, West Warwick, RI, knew at the age of seven that his career path would be in auto body repair work. “There was never a doubt in my mind that I would do anything different than collision work,” says Randy Bottella. Staying true to his course, Bottella stated in his high school yearbook: “I want to own a collision shop.” Bottella’s father was a mechanic and business owner; and located in the same building was a collision shop. “I was lucky to see the transformation of vehicles’ after accidents— mechanically as well as structurally. It was magic to me,” says Bottella. Bottella had the incredible opportunity to work at the auto body shop starting when he was in elementary school and all the way up until the time he opened his own business in 1994. “My passion has
always been in collision work,” says Bottella. After graduating from Scituate High School, Bottella went to the Community College of Rhode Island, and graduated with an associate degree in business management. Then he continued to Northeastern University earning a bachelor of science in business management. “The owner of the auto body shop encouraged me to go to college and earn a business degree. I also knew that no matter what happens in my life, no one would ever be able to take away my education,” says Bottella. Walking into Bottella’s business, you’ll forget that you’re in a collision shop. It’s not immaculate. It’s not neat. It’s pristine! You won’t smell paint, see mud or dirt on the floors, watch the staff walk around the shop wearing winter coats and gloves, or hear heavy metal music blasting throughout the building. What you will see is a gallery of achievements, awards, and certificates surrounding every square inch of the office walls. “We take care of our
customers first then their vehicles. We are a “Complete Collision Repair Solution.” It’s what separates us from other auto body repair businesses,” says Bottella. “We own a fleet of rental vehicles and tow trucks so our customers don’t have to bounce around between businesses after an accident. We provide a onestop-shop. We assist them in the insurance claim process, provide rental vehicles, towing service, and discount their insurance deductibles,” says Bottella. With a customer base in excess of 5,000, it’s not surprising that, 70% of Bottella’s business is through ‘wordof-mouth’. “My staff is phenomenal and they’re the reason why I am a success,” says Bottella. As an industry leader, a boss employees want to work for, customers who would never think of going anywhere else for their auto body repairs, Bottella brings a new level to the meaning of outstanding customer service. With select inventory, no money, a small building, and repair garage, Hurd and Goldberg worked in unison during growth: more people wanting to drive, and during decline, Hurricane Carol hit the state in 1938, wiping out their office/showroom, and damaging many vehicles. They would select their cars for them. It was a different day,” says Chris. Over time, Frank bought out Sam and became sole owner of the dealership, under its new name Hurd Chrysler-Plymouth. His grandfather always claimed “he never worked a day in his life.” His drive for providing exceptional customer relations continues today. 103 ShopInRI.com

In addition, Chrysler’s sales would plummet and be on the verge of bankruptcy. With a strong drive, hard work, and sound ethics instilled in him by his father’s example growing up, Judd succeeded and retained the family business in what would be considered the most tumultuous time in automobile history. Judd closed down its Lincoln location—it proved unprofitable. Growing up, Chris helped his father after school, on weekends, summers, and vacations. Although Chris loved working for his father and being with his grandfather, he had other dreams he wanted to pursue. “I always wanted to be a professional baseball player, since I can remember,” says Chris. After high school, Chris attended Lake Forest College in North Carolina to play ball on schol-
