I know that some people are uneasy about cooking with veal. I buy mine from Sweet & Salty Farm in Little Compton, where they raise the animals humanely. That makes for flavorful meat without the guilt. But if you still feel uncomfortable about using veal, you can use a combination of beef and pork. I also buy veal bones and make my own veal bone broth. Make the meatballs: Combine the veal, breadcrumbs, parsley, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and egg in a bowl, mixing the ingredients thoroughly. Don't over-mix. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Heat a tablespoon of the olive oil in an oven-proof pan, and form the meatballs one by one, placing them in the pan. Brown the meatballs on all sides over medium heat. Place the pan in the oven to cook the meatballs for 10 more minutes. In a saucepan, heat the veal bone broth. Once the meatballs have cooked in the oven, transfer them to the pot of veal bone broth and cover with a lid, keeping the heat on low. If the broth doesn't cover the meatballs, turn them every once in a while to keep them moist on all sides. Cook the meatballs in the broth for about 30 minutes and transfer them to a large sauté pan. Turn the saucepan with the veal broth on high and reduce it to about 1/2 cup. Season it with salt and pepper. In a large pot, cook the pasta to a bit firmer than al dente in well-salted water. Drain and set aside. In the large sauce pan with the meatballs, add the butter and the half-and-half. Add the reduced veal broth, the pasta, and the peas. Gently mix the ingredients in the pan until the peas have warmed through and the sauce clings to the pasta. Serve immediately.

How All 3 Major US Airlines Have Teamed With China

American Airlines has agreed to pay $200 million for a stake in China Southern Airlines, one of China’s three major state-owned carriers, in a bid for a bigger share of the country’s growing travel market, the AP reports. China Southern will expand commercial cooperation, possibly in sales, airport facilities, and code-sharing, the airline said in an announcement Tuesday through the Hong Kong stock exchange. The deal represents 2.76% of China Southern’s shares and requires regulatory approval, the airline said. China Southern is the biggest of China’s three major stateowned carriers by passenger volume, but it’s known for sometimes haphazard service, with flights delayed or canceled with little notice. China is forecast to overtake North America over the next two decades as the biggest air travel market, and foreign carriers are forging steadily closer ties with Chinese airlines to gain a bigger share of China’s market, which is growing rapidly while travel in Europe and North America is leveling off. In exchange, Chinese carriers get access to the experience and management skills of foreign airlines. Two years ago, Delta Air Lines paid $450 million for 3.55% of China Eastern Airlines. The third major US carrier, United Airlines, has a partnership with Air China, the third major Chinese government-owned airline. 4 ShopInRI

Why anyone other than Bill Cosby should care about Bill Cosby’s homeowners insurance may at first seem a mystery. But the beleaguered comedian is apparently taking advantage of the personal injury coverage linked to his AIG policy to deflect his growing legal costs as he fights the defamation suits filed against him by 10 women in three states, the New York Times reports. Cosby is leaning on coverage he has on homes in both Massachusetts and California, each with $1 million in limited liability coverage, as well as additional liability coverage of $35 million he holds with wife Camille, court records show. Cosby is said to want to use the money through the policies for both his defense and to pay out any final judgment costs. It’s an uncommon way to use one’s home coverage, but the Times notes it’s been used in the past by the likes of Bill Clinton and OJ Simpson. Perez’s family agreed to put Perez, already mom to a 3-year-old girl, on life support; a press release explains doctors were hoping to make it to 32 weeks. The Best Burgers in Rhode Island

Luxe Burger Bar | Five Guys | Bossman Burgers | Crazy Burger | Stanley’s Hamburgers 10 ShopInRI

Hamburgers may well be considered America’s favorite food. You can find them in hole-in-the-wall diners, at the drive-through windows of fast food chains, and on the menus of Michelinstarred restaurants. So where exactly did this tasty beef sandwich originate? According to food writer and creator of a popular cooking website, Tory Avery, the inspiration for the hamburger came from Hamburg, Germany, but the sandwich concept was invented much later. In the 19th century, beef from German Hamburg cows was minced and combined with garlic, onions, salt and pepper, then formed into patties (without bread or a bun) to make Hamburg steaks. These early burgers were considered gourmet and were quite pricey, given the quality of Hamburg beef. When German immigrants began arriving in New York and Chicago, many earned a living by opening restaurants. Menus frequently featured Hamburg steak, an Americanized version of the German offering. It was often the most expensive dish on the menu. During the Industrial Revolution, factory workers were served Hamburg steak from food carts. They proved difficult to eat while standing, so one creative cook sandwiched the meat patty between two slices of bread (the culinary innovator’s name has sadly been lost to history). The Hamburg sandwich was born, an evolution that boosted this food’s popularity all over the country. Rhode Island is no different in their consideration of burgers as one of its favorite foods. In Rhode Island, burger joints can be found at just about every corner of every area of the state. Here is a list of five RI favorites.

FIVE GUYS started their franchise business in Washington, DC where it became an area favorite in 1986 when Jerry and Janie Murrell offered wise advice to the four young Murrell brothers: “Start a business or go to college.” The business route won and the Murrell family opened a carry-out burger joint in Arlington, Virginia. Under the guidance of Jerry and Janie, the Murrell family served only hand-formed burgers cooked to perfection on a grill, along with fresh-cut fries cooked in pure peanut oil. The little burger joint quickly developed a cult-like following. As its success continued in the 1980s and 1990s, the Murrell family perfected their simple system. Five Guys was The Place to get a fresh, juicy burger with all the toppings you could stuff between fresh-baked buns. A fifth brother was born and, as their family grew, so did their business. Early in 2003, Jerry and Janie, together with the “Five Guys,” began offering franchise opportunities. Now, more than 30 years after Five Guys first opened, there are almost 1,500 locations worldwide and another 1,500 units in development. In Rhode Island there are four locations -Lincoln, Newport, Wakefield, and Warwick, and its latest in Johnston. Some of their secrets to making the best burgers-they only use fresh ground beef, they only use peanut oil, and there are no freezers at their locations. fiveguys.com

Fett uccine wit h Spring Onion Pes to

Recipe In my kitchen, pesto is a spring staple. Not only is it simple and quick to make, but it can incorporate almost any of the delicate leafy greens that grow during the spring and summer. On pasta is just one way to use pesto, but it can be used for countless applications, such as on steaks, grilled vegetable, or sandwiches. You can substitute any leafy herbs or add a handful of toasted nuts to adjust the flavors as you like. As always, fresh pasta is preferable to dried, but either will work fine. By: Chef Adam Baffoni

Ingredients - 1lb fettuccine - 1 bunch spring onions, cut into 1” segments - 1 bunch basil, leaves only - 1 clove garlic, chopped - ¼ cup grated parmesan - 2 tbsp lemon juice - ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil - Salt and pepper, to taste - ½ cup bread crumbs - 2 tbsp butter

Preparation Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. To make the pesto, combine the onions, basil, garlic, parmesan and lemon juice in a food processor. Season with salt and pepper. While the food processor is running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Run the food processor until the pesto reaches your desired consistency, then taste and season accordingly. In a saute pan, heat the bread crumbs over medium high heat, stirring constantly, until they are golden and smell toasty. Remove from the heat and set aside. Cook the fettuccine to your desired doneness, then strain, reserving ½ cup of the pasta water. Put the pesto in a large saute pan with a few tablespoons of the reserved pasta water and the butter. Heat on medium high until it begins to bubble, then add the fettuccine and toss to coat. If necessary, add some of the reserved pasta water to create a smooth sauce. To serve, split the pasta and pesto up between four bowls and top ea ch with a handful of bread crumbs. ShopInRI 15

SPRING CLEANINGTHE OTHER KIND. By Elizabeth Fairchild Greenberg Typically, we all have our Spring cleaning objectives. How many years in a row do we say, clean the garage, lose 10, organize these files, stop this, stop that, make your iPhoto’s reachable and touchable to “The Cloud”, download, purge, be good? I am done with that. So, let’s reflect on the “other kind of Spring cleaning”. Off I go to Warren (oh it’s so far!) to savor and reflect at The Coffee Depot on Main Street. The Coffee Depot is a stomping ground superb- a quiet, unassuming café to sit, socialize or complete a project. Love this. Once there, how about pulling out a blank (or plain and simple tablet) notebook and reviewing your thoughts, desires, hopes and dreams forever, not just for the New Year. This is completed with cozy ambiance, artisanal teas, delish coffee and freshly baked goods. Forget all and be Zen- just be with The Java. Along with the spring cleaning at The Coffee Depot, I am thinking of Spring with a mid-life-crisis-eye. Yes, I see estate planning, I see wills, I see selling and buying real-estate, I see making my business grow bigger, smaller. I am now panicked at

The Coffee Depot the real spring cleaning I need to do. Luckily, no one is noticing my notebook notes to self, furrowed eyebrows and intense thinking. That’s why I love this place. My perfect moment of introspection at The Depot is complimented by my interview with Stella Guerra. Stella, a BBA (Barrington Business Association) member and local attorney, is here with me at The Coffee Depot. With porcelain coffee mugs in hand, we converse privately

She can assist with downsizing, buying or selling a home, revamping your business, starting a business, selling as well as expanding/merging your business. As I sit in The Coffee Depot talking with Stella, a woman I have met maybe twice, but do adore and admire, I take a deep sip of my coffee. How nice to have uninterrupted conversation in a setting with New England ambiance. It is delightful to be welcomed always at a local location with privacy, warmth, class and fab drinks and deserts and, on occasion, music and art exhibits. The Coffee Depot is waiting for you…and Stella Guerra is ready, when you are, for your Spring Cleaning- the other kind.

Rhode Island Organic Omega 3 Salad Dressings & Marinades By By: Susan Gazerro Susan Gazerro

If you love salad dressings and/or marinades, this article is a must read. From a taste perspective, there are no other dressing that can compete. And, an added bonus is all of the health benefits that these dressings provide.

olive oil for which they will not compromise. They have recently also taken a huge interest in creations that are “gluten free”, and most of their products are now also certified as gluten free.

One of my questions to the founder Carder Starr, was, “What inspired you to create these healthy salad dressings and marinades”? His reply was that he had a personal experience that forced him to become a strong advocate of Omega-3 fatty acids. He became committed to the creation of heart healthy and brain healthy products. He didn’t want to just take Omega 3 in pill form. He thought, “If I can create tasty products that people consume daily, and also have health benefits, it’s a win, win”.

Looking to reduce or avoid sugar? Most of their products are sugar free or have no sugar added; and, all are low sodium, while tasting as if they’re sinful!

About five years ago, he started testing different dressings, and within the past two years, the company’s products have become certified organic by the USDA— which means that they are also required to be non-GMO; and these delicious dressings/marinades are now available for purchase. Quality is a top priority. They are always listening to what the consumer desires, and they truly believe that the consumer wants is for them to improve their products. Their philosophy is to “never compromise on taste or health benefits”. Their products are all made with extra virgin olive oil. Sure, they can use the less expensive canola or soybean oil, but, they believe in only using extra virgin 18 ShopInRI

What are the benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids? If I were to tell you that consuming healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids will not only keep your body and brain functioning properly, they will also help fight disease, lower cholesterol, and help with weight loss; would you believe me? That is exactly what healthy fats do; promote wellness. There is a huge misconception out there. People hear the word ‘fat’ and shy away from it, unaware of all of the powerful and essential benefits they can offer the body. Sixty percent of the brain consists of fat, in particular the DHA form of Omega-3; so not getting enough of healthy fat to your brain can lead to hardening of the soft tissues, causing plaque to form which can lead to diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. With that said, healthy fats are an important source of energy, providing twice as much protein and

carbohydrates. They also produce vital hormones; hold cells together; protect organs; promote eye health; and generally have an anti-inflammatory effect.

much less processed food and cooking from scratch more often. This can be a good thing and beneficial to your health.

Why is Gluten Free important?

Rhode Island’s Dressings is committed to making healthy, yet tasteful dressings. Again, they work everyday to improve their products based on consumers’ requests. The five flavors of dressings and marinades that are currently available are Caesar, ginger plum, balsamic vinegar, raspberry vinegar, and honey mustard.

Gluten is everywhere. It’s in bread, pasta, cupcakes and so many more foods. This wheat protein even sneaks into unexpected places like canned soup, salad dressings, and oatmeal. For most people, this is no big deal. Gluten is a key factor in giving bread its chewiness and cupcakes their airy crumb texture. So why give it up? Here’s a quick rundown of the major reasons why some people need to eliminate gluten from their diet. A few reasons to go gluten free are, if you’ve been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, if you are gluten intolerant, or if you have an allergic reaction to wheat. In all of these cases, eliminating wheat and gluten from the diet clears up all of the major symptoms. The lining of the small intestine heals and intestinal discomfort fades. The trick is that it has to be total elimination of gluten, meaning no wheat, barley, or rye in any form. For many people, ingesting only a small amount of gluten inadvertently can bring on occurrences of the negative symptoms. And, while many people think that gluten can be eliminated simply by removing bread from their diet, the truth is that gluten is in many, many processed food products; so changing to a gluten-free lifestyle often means eating

The dressings that contain sugar, have it in it’s natural from. Honey mustard has its natural sugar from the mustard honey — and, there is no added sugar. One of my favorites is the ginger plum. And, as great of a salad dressing it is, it’s also a perfect choice to use as a marinade for salmon or tuna. You can find some delicious recipes on their website:

www.riorganics.com.

And, you can find these delicious and healthy dressings locally at Dave’s Marketplace, Whole Foods, Belmont Market, Tom’s Market, Clement’s Market, Dino’s, and Eastside Marketplace, just to name a few. They are also currently in all of the New England states and they even export to Abu Dhabi. They are open to expanding to other products in the future and I, for one, cannot wait to see and taste what they come out with next. Being a fitness instructor and caring about nutrition as much as I do, makes me proud to say these products are made locally, in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

VEAL MEATBALLS WITH PASTA AND PEAS

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

Ingredients: 1 lb. ground veal 1 cup toasted breadcrumbs 2 teaspoons parsley 1 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon basil 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/2 teaspoon granulated onion 1 egg Extra virgin olive oil 1 lb. pasta, cooked firmer than al dente 2 cups veal bone broth or stock salt and pepper for seasoning 2 tablespoons half-and-half 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup of frozen organic peas

by Al Milukas

Cook the meatballs in the broth for about 30 minutes and transfer them to a large sautĂŠ pan.

Spinach Tortellini Soup Recipe Inredients: 3 tablespoons basil, fresh 6 cloves of garlic (chopped) 2 small cans of San Marzano tomatoes (diced tomatoes will suffice) 6 oz. of spinach, fresh 1 yellow onion (chopped about 1 ½ cups) 2 quarts chicken broth 20 oz. package of 3 cheese tortellini 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups water ½ cup parmesan cheese

Sometimes you just need a good soup to make you feel better. One that is flavorful, and light and easy to make is a great choice. Plus, this recipe is sure to leave you with lots of leftovers, unless you are planning on serving a large party. This dish tastes just as good 5 days later as it did when it was first made, or freeze it and save it for a rainy day. It’s loaded with spinach, so you’ll be sure to get some nutritional benefits from this too!

Directions: In a large pot, heat olive oil on a medium temperature. Then, add onion and sauté for 3 minutes. Next, add garlic and sauté for 3 minutes longer. Pour the chicken broth and water in and increase your temperature to bring to a boil. Next, add the tortellini and cook for about 7 minutes, or follow the directions on the package. Add the salt, sugar, pepper, basil, tomatoes and spinach. Make sure that the spinach cooks enough just to get wilted. Top it off with parmesan cheese and serve hot.

OMG, Shoes! I always get super excited about shoes when this time of year rolls around. Sure, I love a good bootie, but after 7 months of confinement in socks and boots, my feet are ready to be free. This year’s spring and summer shoe trends are almost too good! It’s been hard to control myself because I want them all. Here are my favorites, and I’ve made sure to have at least one pair of each in my closet. 1. The loafer. Loafers have been making a huge comeback, especially for women. The “borrowed from the boys” look is a favorite, especially paired with more feminine pieces. While everyone loves a good black leather loafer (thanks, Gucci), there are so many warm-weather options available for your cropped denim and floral frocks. I recently added a great pair of white slip-on loafers to my shoe family, but also adore this pink patent pair—definitely on my list!

by Amanda Hemond

2. The mule. I’ve yet to add a pair of mules to my closet, but definitely need to. A great nude pair is the perfect addition to almost any outfit. They’re easy, sleek, and on-trend with just the right “cool” factor. 3. The block heel. As a 90s kid, I obviously love the reminiscent feeling that a block heel gives me. What’s funny is that I used to think a lot of shoes like this looked frumpy, but now I love! Fashion is funny, isn’t it? Anyway, a block heeled sandal will certainly be your favorite shoe to pair with your flirty dresses this season. 4. The casual sneaker. Athliesure is here to stay, and I’m not mad about it. My sneaker collection has been growing slowly, and the options are endless! Opt for your favorite pair of casual sneakers in either a neutral classic or a bold hue—anything goes. But it’s so hard to choose just one pair, am I right? 5. The slide. Slides are comfortable, effortless, and so chic. Arguably, if you can only buy one new pair of shoes this season, this may be your best option! They’re classy enough for dressier outfits, and casual enough for a basic tee and cut offs. I personally love slides because they are the ideal replacement for flip flops that will elevate your outfit to the next level. As a shoe lover, spring and summer shoes get me all anxious for warmer days and brighter toes. When shopping to add to your wardrobe this season, consider one of these trends when looking for shoes. Happy shoe shopping! ShopInRI 31 31 ShopInRI

Fashion Trend Report: Spring 2017! By Rosanna M. Ortiz Spring is finally here. After months of bi-polar weather and wearing the same things over and over because you are tired of everything in your closet; that has at last come to an end. It is now time to bask in the excitement of sun, al fresco dining, and of course an upgrade to your wardrobe. Don’t get me wrong, spring isn’t the time to donate everything in your closet that is black, grey and navy just yet; this is a time to add trend and staple pieces to your wardrobe which seems supremely dull at this point. I still wear a lot of black, grey and navy and am also known to continue wearing my leather pants in the summer (it’s hard for me to put those away no matter what season we are in). However, now is the time to add a bit of color and texture to your closet. There are many trends for spring 2017 that involve pattern, color and bathrobe styles (yes, bathrobe). These are the ones that stand out and are suitable for any body type and budget.

Banker Stripes I have always been on the fence about stripes because as we know, they have a tendency to make one look larger than they are. Especially horizontal stripesyikes! However, the thin banker stripes are a huge hit for spring and offer a subtle take on the massive stripes that normally grace every spring inspired collection. The best part about these stripes is they can be worn casually or as a more formal look.

Foldover Waist I am obsessed with this style this season. Gone are the boring waistlines where you have to accentuate with a belt. This style provides a minimalist, asymmetrical taste to an outfit that may be more conservative. I love how it looks on a skirt as it offers a progressive change to the beloved peplum, but not so high that it adds curve. This foldover allows you to use this piece as an accessory without having to add an accessory. 36 ShopInRI

Slit Sleeves An updated version to the beloved cape blazer, slit sleeves add a fabulously chic edge to your wardrobe that is both sexy and forward. This fresh trend hit the runways in everything from satin to jean, and is rumored to be a mainstay in street wear going forward. I wouldn’t necessary splurge on this style just yet, but it’s great to add a piece to your spring collection that is not so expensive.

Yellow I am a huge fan of yellow and am thrilled to see that it’s one of the colors of the season. Yellow truly looks good on everyone. Personally, I prefer a bright yellow as opposed to a muted, but whatever your preference, this color should be in your closet. A bright yellow tunic or blouse, paired with red lipstick is a showstopper, and is the perfect amplifier for spring. Don’t shy away from having yellow footwear or accessories; this can add the perfect pop and excitement to any outfit. You just can’t be in a bad mood when you wear yellow!

White Shirt Dress Audrey Massart Photography Another one of my personal favorites is white! However, this specific trend is for the shirtdress. The white shirtdress is sure to be one of the multifunctional trends of the season, and if I can predict, will be worn a lot. You can layer this baby or wear it by itself for a relaxed look, or put a high-waist belt to add shape. It can be worn with sandals or heels and still look like a million bucks. White in the spring is one of my favorite looks, especially with a healthy tan. White can make you look chic and put together. Just remember to wear nude undergarments, not white ones.

make healthy choices this spring By: Stacie Venagro 2014 World Miss Fitness America and Miss Fitness Universe

Spring has sprung with longer days, shorter nights, fresh air, open windows, and outdoor activities. New Englanders are no strangers to fluctuating weather patterns which means that the weather doesn’t always cooperate at the beginning of spring . Many of us make promises to ourselves to make changes when the weather “gets nicer”; but no matter the weather, why not start now? Making healthy choices can be fun and simple. What you eat is just as important as exercise! You have the power to control what you consume. I’m going to share with you some of my healthy eating tips to help you achieve your goals. Meal prep, which I’m sure you heard before is crucial to achieving your goals. Here are some key factors for successful meal preparations: Recipes: Know what you’re going to prepare. There are so many websites filled with easy, healthy recipes. Some of my favorites include skinnytaste.com, cookinglight.com and eatingwell.com.

The Lean Green Bean What to prep: Ideally you want to have your whole day planned out. This will prevent you from getting hungry and reaching for something that may stifle your progress. The proper foods will include breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and then dinner. Using an app like MyFitnessPal to track your food may be helpful to ensure you are getting the right amount of calories and enough protein, carbs and fat. Tools: Have your Tupperware, plastic bags, crock pot, and pans readily available. Measuring portions is also important so have your measuring cups, spoons and food scale on hand. Pick a day that works for you: For those with the weekends off, Sunday is a good day to shop for what you need and to prepare your food. You can do 3 days in advance or 5, whatever works for you. Alternative Ways to Deal With Pain By Susan Gazerro If you are anything like me, you prefer alternatives to taking medications. I always used my fitness activity as a drug. It’s the best medicine and it is cost free. I want to educate and help people find other solutions for pain without having to take a pill. After doing my research, the pain-relief strategies that prove to really assist with relieving pain are acupuncture and chiropractic medicine, physical therapy and even meditation. They all provide relief, again without having to take opioid medications. I do understand that there are scenarios in which opioids are needed, such as postsurgery or injury, however; opioids carry the danger of misuse and addiction. Current data shows that overdose deaths involving prescription drugs have become an epidemic. It is sadly out of control. Below is a quick look at the alternatives and how they treat pain. Acupuncture Acupuncture can treat almost any type of pain or imbalance within the body. It can help with everything from Achilles tendonitis to migraines, back and knee pain, plantar fasciitis, and even digestive problems. Acupuncture works by inserting hair thin filiform needles into the pain points of the body. For the most part it is painless. There are many theories for how it works, but one of the most popular is Qi (pronounced Chi) energy blocking the meridian, which can imbalance the body. Scientifically, acupuncture shuts off pain impulses to the body. 48 ShopInRI

Chiropractic Care Chiropractic care can treat everything from very serious pain to minor discomfort or stiffness. Studies show that chiropractic care is highly effective and one of the more cost effective treatments for pain related issues. Doctors use specific corrective adjustments to normalize misaligned or dysfunctional joints, soft tissues and related anatomical component parts, structures and systems. The end goal is to restore or enhance functional neurology, physiology and bio mechanical integrity. The body is meant to move and when it doesn’t, it causes friction which then causes inflammation and pain. There may need to be adjustments in one’s exercise, diet or maybe even rehabilitation. Back pain is one of the biggest complaints, but chiropractic care has also been helpful

with shoulder and knee pain, plantar fasciitis, as well as other joint points in the body. This is also a great alternative to people who cannot take medications. Physical Therapy Physical therapy can treat many different kinds of movement dysfunctions and painful conditions. Physical therapy is for non-surgical musculoskeletal care. This type of therapy treats bodies through movement. It restores normal movement to the tissues through strength, flexibility and mobility. It’s the treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods of massage, heat or ice treatment and exercise. Some physical therapists may even use dry needling, which is similar to acupuncture. They locate the source of the pain, whether it’s in the joint, connective tissue, such as ligaments and tendons or contractile tissues like muscles. Patient

education helps prevent pain from returning. Physical therapists discuss repetitive motion, body mechanics, and de-conditioning, proper lifting and sitting. There’s a lot going on with manual therapy and exercise to help people deal with pain. Our bodies produce endorphins, along with other central nervous system transmitters which help us naturally mediate pain. This is why physical therapy is so important and so helpful.

Massage Therapy There are countless health benefits and several different techniques with massage therapy to relieve muscle pain and soreness. This is another alternative to medication. Chiropractic care is often recommended after one has had a massage. Chiropractors deal with bones, while massage therapists deal with muscles. They go hand in hand. If a muscle is in spasm it can pull the bones out of alignment. The two therapies together can bring more in-depth healing and pain management, faster recovery, easier adjustments, increased range of motion and improvement in both circulation and posture. Naturopathy This is a holistic approach to dealing with any type of pain. Naturopathy encourages selfhealing using nutrition, vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanical medicines, as well as lifestyle changes. This treatment is most common when one may be dealing with stress. Stress releases high levels of cortisol and that’s the last thing one needs when they are experiencing any type of pain. This treatment is gaining ground and becoming more popular everyday. Personally, I’ve always said everything we need is found in a food or a plant. Naturopathy uses everything from cayenne pepper, which is known to reduce pain, to leafy vegetables, nuts, magnesium, garlic, and turmeric, to name a few. Some health issues do require other ways of relief if the food is not enough and that’s when they may recommend natural substances in capsule form, teas and tinctures etc.

Transcendental Meditation Transcendental meditation does not involve religion or belief. It’s a matter of taking one’s mind to a quiet place, called pure consciousness. It is recommended you do it twice a day for twenty minutes. Sit with your eyes closed and allow your mind to settle down. Most see results using this method of treatment within one to two days. When the mind settles, the body settles, resulting in a deep state of rest. When people are stressed, pain is increased so by settling the mind you decrease any pain the body may be feeling. Meditation goes back thousands of years and scientists are now working with the Dalai Lama to understand the connection between science and meditation and its effect on the human body. When one practices meditation they have more energy, they sleep better, and blood pressure is reduced. All great benefits!

MOVIE REVIEW By: Hannah Burke

With the success of The Lego Movie, Warner Brothers have decided to push forward with animated Lego movies, first with The Lego Batman Movie. The movie starts with a classic Joker (Voiced by Zach Galifianakis) heist. He plans to use a bomb to blow up Gotham City and split it apart, sending the city into chaos. His victory doesn’t last long, as Batman (Voiced by Will Arnett) quickly comes to the rescue, defeating all the villains and defusing the bomb. However, in the process Batman hurts the Joker’s feelings by telling him that he never cared about Joker and that he isn’t important in his life. Joker is heartbroken, and the city praises Batman once again. Bruce Wayne continues with his life and goes to the Winter Ball where he meets orphan Dick Grayson (Voiced by Michael Cera) and accidentally adopts the boy when he sees the new commissioner Barbara Gordon (Voiced by Rosario Dawson) and is love stricken. His attitude quickly changes when she proposes that Batman work with the police, and that he is a menace to the city. But, Joker and the other villains break in and attack. However, they surrender, and Batman notices something fishy is up. To stop his plan, Batman decides to send Joker to the Phantom Zone, the most secure prison that holds all the world’s most dangerous criminals. He returns home to find Alfred (Voiced by Ralph Fiennes) trying to get him to take care of Dick, the orphan he unknowingly adopted. Shocked, Bruce retaliates and yells at Alfred. However, he gives in and brings the boy along on his mission to steal the Phantom Zone projector from Superman (Voiced by Channing Tatum) to trap Joker in the most secure prison in the Lego world. They succeed, but Batman becomes upset when he finds out his fellow members of the Justice League held their anniversary party without him.

The duo quickly heads to Arkham Asylum where Batman and the newly named Robin manage to make it to Joker’s cell. They succeed, only to get caught by Commissioner Gordon, getting Batman and Robin get put into jail. Harley Quinn (Voiced by Jenny Slate) steals the Projector and breaks out the Joker; then releasses the greatest villains like Voldemort (Voiced by Eddie Izzard), Sauron (Voiced by Jemaine Clement), and King Kong (Voiced by Seth Green) the Phantom Zone. Batman is forced begrudgingly to team up with his friends to save Gotham City. Overall, I really liked the movie. I loved the love-hate relationship between Batman and Joker. Instead of being sappy and loving, Joker wanted Batman to prove that he is really Batman’s greatest enemy and that they hate each other. The relationship really adds some great laughs into the movie. It showed both hilarious comedy and humor, funny relationships, and a whole lot of a different Batman than what we’ve seen over the years. However, what surprised me the most was the emotion in the movie. It focuses a lot on Bruce Wayne/Batman’s troubling emotions with the death of his parents and the fact that he shoves away everyone he cares about so they won’t die like his parents. I overall like the movie and I give The Lego Batman Movie 5 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG for minor violence.

Local Hero Continues to Give Back with Gary “Tiger” Balletto Foundation By Mario Farone Gary Balletto is a champion – I knew that within only minutes of hearing him speak. But, unlike most Rhode Islanders, I had no idea of all that he had accomplished over the course of his career, both inside and outside of the ring, and, surprisingly, just how much more he plans to do. Balletto is widely recognized for his success as professional boxer. A Rhode Island local hailing from Providence, Balletto began a serious pursuit of his boxing career at the age of 18. Over the course of his 10-year professional career (1996 – 2006), Balletto took home multiple Golden Glove titles in New England and fought on national television frequently. “Life in the ring was hard. But, it was bearable because of the love you get from your family and the team in your corner.” Balletto confessed. 60 ShopInRI

That, alone, is a history to be truly proud of; but Balletto would not stop there. He also was featured on ESPN’S The Contender series and starred in multiple documentaries about his boxing career, all while running successful real estate and general contracting businesses. It’s evident that the hard-working Balletto never considered any form of early retirement.

left him paralyzed from the chest down, allowing only limited use of his arms and little to no dexterity in his fingers. “In a way, I was lucky. I already had a tremendous team and network in place at the time of my injury. But, a lot of people don’t have that type of support and I saw that first hand as I sought treatment and care for myself.” It should come as no surprise that even today, Balletto continues to fight the good fight. He exercises daily, making muscles stronger and more responsive, and never loses sight of his goal – to one day walk again.

But, Balletto’s life changed dramatically in the summer of 2013 when he suffered a major injury falling from an exercise bar in his backyard. Dropping onto his neck, Gary broke numerous vertebrae in his upper spine and was kept in a coma for over 6 weeks. Being a fighter, Balletto lived, but the accident

But, for Gary and many others living with spinal injuries, the road to complete recovery is long and uncertain. Over his years of rehabilitation, Balletto noticed a lack of facilities that were designed with such a purpose in mind. Seeing this, many people living with such injuries are led to believe there is no

sense in trying, no hope in their recovery, and simply abandon their desire to heal. That’s where Balletto steps in. Gary states, “I started The Gary ‘Tiger’ Balletto Foundation with one mission in mind: Providing assistance and resources to people suffering from spinal cord injury.” And, that assistance is truly needed.

“The Foundation is going to focus on establishing a center for people living with spinal cord injuries so that they can rehab around other people that all have the same goal – standing up from their chair and walking again.” Balletto, while still without movement of his lower body, has experienced improvements in motor function and responses in his arms and hands due to his regular physical therapy with adaptive equipment. Not to mention, of course, the improved mental state and endorphin release that comes from a good workout. Gary Balletto pictured with his 3 children Hailey - Aiden - Gary Jr. & daughter in law Brittany

Balletto believes that physical conditioning is an important part in the healing process, alongside continued innovative research and the spread of information. He hopes the foundation will help encourage and educate those with and without spinal injuries, and bring the community closer together. With such a noble goal in mind, Gary turns to us. “We are seeking the help of other people in the community to assist with our fundraising effort. In the coming weeks and months, I am going to be working hard and seeking contributions and partnerships wherever they may exist.”

Balletto with his girlfriend Jennifer

Those looking to help Gary and others with spinal injuries are encouraged to attend Gary ‘Tiger’ Balletto Foundation’s One More Round fundraiser, which is to be held at the Park Theatre in Cranston, in May. The event will be an evening full of entertainment from local comedians, live auctions, highlights of Gary’s boxing career, and a motivational speech from Balletto, himself. Those interested in attending can visit www.facebook.com/ CapitalCityPromotions for more information about the fundraiser and how to purchase tickets. The date is set for Saturday, May 20th at 6PM. The fundraiser is the first step in a series of even greater things to come from Balletto’s foundation. And, as he always has shown us, Gary continues to display nothing but positive steps towards the many goals he has set for himself and his cause. “It’s going to be a challenge but I assure everyone that I have a lot of good rounds left in me and I am up for the fight.” ShopInRI 61

Time for Some Financial Spring Cleaning Spring is in the air, even if it’s not quite there on the calendar. This year, as you shake off the cobwebs from winter and start tidying up around your home and yard, why not also do some financial spring cleaning? Actually, you can apply several traditional spring cleaning techniques to your financial situation. Here are a few ideas: Look for damage. Damage to your home’s siding, shingles and foundation can eventually degrade the structure of your home. Your investment portfolio is also a structure of a sort, and it, too, can be damaged. Specifically, you may have deliberately constructed your portfolio with an investment mix – stocks, fixed-income vehicles, cash instruments, etc. – that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. But over time, your portfolio can evolve in unexpected ways. For example, your stocks may have grown so much in value that they now take up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had intended, possibly subjecting you to a higher degree of risk. If this happens, you may need to rebalance your portfolio. Get rid of “clutter.” As you look around your home, do you see three mops or four nonfunctional televisions or a stack of magazines from the 1990s? If these items no longer have value, you could get rid of them and clear up some living space. As an investor, you also might have “clutter” – in the form of investments that no longer meet your needs. If you sold these investments, you could use the proceeds to fill gaps in your portfolio. 64 64ShopInRI ShopInRI

Consolidate. Do you keep your lawnmower in a shed, a rake in your garage, and your gardening tools in the basement? When working on your outdoor tasks, you might find it more efficient to have all these items in one location. You could also have your investments scattered about – an IRA here, a new 401(k) there, and an older 401(k) someplace else. But if you consolidated all your investments in one place, you might cut down on paperwork and fees, and you wouldn’t risk losing track of an asset (which actually happens more than you might think). Even more importantly, when you have all your investments with one provider, you’ll be better positioned to follow a single, centralized investment strategy. Prepare for a rainy day. As part of your outdoor spring cleaning, you may want to look at your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear and in good repair, so that they can move rainwater away from your home. Your financial goals need protection, too, so you’ll want to ensure you have adequate life and disability insurance. Seal leaks. In your home inspection this spring, you may want to investigate doors and windows for leaks and drafts. Your investment portfolio might have some “leaks” also. Are investment-related taxes siphoning off more of your earnings than you realize? A financial professional can offer you recommendations for appropriate tax-advantaged investments. This spring, when you’re cleaning your physical surroundings, take some time to also tidy up your financial environment. You may be pleased with the results. 3.5” x 2.5” | Maximum Font Size: 30 pt

It Seems Only Fitting the

Vince Lombardi Trophy is made in Rhode Island On February 7th, just two days after the epic Super Bowl win, New England Patriots fans in Rhode Island had their turn to celebrate the team’s fifth Super Bowl victory. Just hours following a duck boat parade in downtown Boston, many players including tight end Rob Gronkowski and fullback James Develin — who played college football at Rhode Island’s Brown University — were present for a rambunctious rally at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence. Owner Robert Kraft and his son, team president Jonathan Kraft, brought not only the Vince Lombardi Trophy from their comeback victory over Atlanta but also the four previous trophies the Patriots have earned. The Super Bowl Trophy is an iconic symbol of not only a championship, but also represents the successful efforts of teamwork and also the support of the fans. And in Rhode Island, it’s been said that there are more Patriots fans per capita than in any state, nationwide. This is not only the reason that the trophy is especially extraordinary to Rhode Islanders. The fact that the priceless trophy is created locally adds an even sweeter connection for the fans. Each year the Lombardi Trophy is created by Tiffany & Co. in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Silversmith artisans create the trophy with age-old techniques like spinning, chasing, engraving, and polishing. Tiffany executive, Tom O’Rourke told CNBC back in 2013, “It’s like the turn of the century with some of the machines and equipment used,” adding that, “It’s made by local craftspeople that are employing crafts and skills from the 1800s.” The sterling silver trophy is 22 inches tall and weighs seven pounds. The NFL championship icon represents a regulation 66 ShopInRI

sized football atop a stylized elongated and concaved three-sided kicking stand. There is nothing holding the seemingly separate football and stand together on the trophy. It’s a design created as a single piece, a design that has remained constant for decades. Once the trophy is awarded to the winning team, it is sent to the Tiffany workshop in Cumberland to engrave the team’s name, date, location, and the final score before it goes to the team’s home. Smaller replicas are also made and given to each player. “I would tell you that the trophy itself is priceless,” O’Rourke said. “Whatever monetary value is assigned to the trophy doesn’t accurately present the work the athletes have put into it.” The Super Bowl trophy was originally named the World Professional Football Championship Trophy. It kept that name until 1970, when it was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy, in honor of the legendary Green Packer’s coach who led his team to victory of the first two Super Bowls and who died suddenly from cancer in September of 1970. Tiffany & Co. has created the Lombardi trophy since the first Super Bowl in 1967 and in 2001, opened the local facility in Cumberland where it is still made. Hidden away in an industrial park near the Woonsocket border, employees work diligent for many hours changing sheets of silver into a 22-inch, seven-pound sculpture creation. “What really makes it so special is that it’s handmade and they are techniques that can’t be fabricated,” Tiffany & Co. Senior Director Vicky Reynolds told Eyewitness News. The different parts start off in a simple state, but soon take shape. First, a spinner uses a wooden mold to shape a flattened silver circle into a sphere. “There [are] a lot of things that technology certainly has helped us with,” Reynolds said. “But the beauty of this trophy is that the football itself is actually spun from two different spheres; it’s then soldered together.” Together, the concave spheres are formed into a regulation-size football that is then sent to a silversmith. Reynolds sticks with century-old techniques and handmade tools to hammer in the complex details, such as stitching and holes for the laces. From there, it’s on to the curved kicking tee. Three pieces are cut, rolled, and then torch-soldered together. The last touch is to polish and shine – cleaning all residue and fingerprints from the trophy’s surface. Reynolds said the entire process of creating the trophy is a team effort. “I think the term ‘it takes a village’ comes to mind here,” she said. The football is then fastened to the kicking tee – creating a stable base and

also a useful grip for players, coaches and staff to raise the trophy high above their heads after a Super Bowl victory. Its durable design makes it sturdy enough to be passed along from player to player and endure lots of kissing, cradling, confetti, and more. “We love it when it comes back with champagne on it because it means it’s been loved,” Reynolds said. The National Football League is always evolving, from rules and franchise locations to players and coaches, but the top prize has remained unchanged for five decades. “This is an especially significant trophy for Tiffany,” said Reynolds, who noted the company has been making trophies since 1837. “All of the trophies are special, but this one is extraordinary,” she added. Its initial design, however, had rather humble beginnings. “When our then-Vice President Oscar Reidner met with the commissioner of the NFL, who was Pete Rozelle at the time, he literally sketched the trophy on the back of a cocktail napkin,” Reynolds said. “We’re very proud of that, and sometimes the simplest pieces make the most extraordinary pieces, and we think that’s the case with this trophy.” It takes about a year for Tiffany’s to create a new trophy, which results in working on the next trophy soon after the Super Bowl has ended. A few weeks after the game is played, the sculpture is returned to the Cumberland facility so the winning team’s name can be engraved. “We have an apprenticeship program that passes down generationally; and these techniques really haven’t changed much since our inception in 1837,” Reynolds said. Reynolds works at Tiffany & Co. headquarters in New York, but is no stranger to New England – she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. “I often tell people you can’t buy this trophy and what makes it so special is that you can only win it,” Reynolds said. “We’re really proud of our legacy and especially proud of this workshop in Rhode Island.” Reynolds said her heart skipped a beat when Rob Gronkowski almost dropped one of the five trophies during the Patriots’ Super Bowl LI celebration in Providence. “We got a little faint of heart, but we trust in Gronk,” said Reynolds. “We can certainly understand that sentiment to win five trophies is extraordinary,” she added. The Super Bowl LI trophy was on display at the Patriots Hall of Fame, but not for long; it’s now back in Cumberland to be engraved. In the meantime, workers there have already started working on the next trophy for Super Bowl LII. ShopInRI 67

Make Your Dog the Life of the Party with Help From Jack’s Snacks

By: Brian J. Lowney Does your dog always like to have lots of fun and be the life of the party? Why not indulge in that fun and invite a few canine friends – and some human guests, too – and throw a doggie birthday party? You’ll have a “howling time,” lots of laughs and a bag full of treats to send home for the doggie guests to enjoy! Jack’s Snacks was started by company founder, Marni MacLean Karro, in 2004, when she combined her two great loves – baking and dogs – and launched an enterprise that she hoped would bring sweet rewards and a lot of fun. “I was at the crossroads of life,” Karro recalls, noting that she had just returned from California at the time after working in the entertainment industry and was looking to take the next step in life.” “I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” the mother of two daughters tells, but knew that she always enjoyed creating enticing confections and was also enthralled with canines of all shapes and sizes. It was on a trip to Maine with her husband, Chris, where Karro discovered some tantalizing doggie 72 ShopInRI

treats in a canine bakery that inspired the future entrepreneur to chart a new course. “I started a month later at a farmer’s market,” Karro states, noting that she gradually developed a line of dog biscuits and other canine bakery products that quickly started winning rave reviews from customers, dogloving friends and of course, from “Man’s Best Friend”. Karro says the company is named for Jack, a black-Lab-mix that died on Thanksgiving Day in 2006. “We were his fifth owners in two years,” the dog lover remembers. “We now say that he lives on through the biscuits, his legacy.” According to Karro, popular selections at the canine bakery include themes with fire hydrants, large dog bones, chipmunks, squirrels and a great big yellow tennis ball generously filled with tasty treats and toys. Other popular treats that have dogs barking up a storm include the Woofie Pie, a carob cake filled with a rich ricotta filling, and Ruffins, which Karro describes as peanut butter and banana muffins, which also can be made with

bacon for added flavor. “The dog go super crazy for the bacon muffins,” the dog baker tells. For a cool, refreshing treat, Jack’s Snacks also offers frozen yogurt for dogs. “We offer a wide range of cakes depending on the size,” Karro continues, noting that some dog owners treat their special pooch with a unique canine cupcake from Jack’s Snacks, while other guests enjoy a home-baked cupcake or one bought from a commercial bakery. Karro emphasizes that many of Jack’s Snacks’ confections and biscuits can be made wheat-free by special request at no extra charge. In addition to cakes and treats, Jack’s Snacks also sells dog-themed greeting cards, tee-shirts, collars and leashes, whimsical artwork, and much more. “My customers are in love with their pets,” Karro shares. “Their pets are just as important as another family member.” The busy entrepreneur says that in addition to the love and care that goes into handcrafting each dog biscuit, Jack’s Snacks biscuits are made with

only human-grade ingredients that are not only sourced in the United States, but also in Rhode Island. Karro notes that the bakery uses many certified organic ingredients, and does not use additives or preservatives. According to the busy baker, owning a dog bakery is a lot of fun and has reaped many rewards. “It’s a lot of work but it’s also a lot of fun,” Karro shares. “The dogs are always very appreciative of what I do.” Visitors to Jack’s Snacks can occasionally meet Winston, a pug-schnauzer mix owned by the couple and adopted at the Providence Animal Rescue League. “He’s the CDO (chief dog officer) of the company,” Karro quips. Rhode Island’s Housing Market Trends for 2017 Julia Romano

Nationally, the year 2016 proved to be a steady one for real estate. Home values, prices and sales showed some of their strongest numbers since before the economic downturn a few years ago. And mortgage rates were downright cheap. But there’s no guarantee that favorable conditions for buying and borrowing will continue in the months ahead. Consequently, it’s fair to ask the question: Will housing prices keep climbing into 2017? Industry experts weigh in. Though no one can predict the future, their housing market forecast can help first-time home buyers make better decisions this year and next. Should you buy now, or wait? According to RI Living, January property sales statistics for Rhode Island released by the Rhode Island Association of Realtors showed a strong surge in closing activity at the beginning of 2017. Single-family home sales rose 21 percent compared to January of 2016. The median sales price of those sales was $225,000, $1500 less than the prior year. “Rhode Island’s housing market is still seeing remarkable gains. Overall, interest rates are still low despite recent increases and though the supply of homes available for buyers is shrinking, there is still a decent assortment of properties to choose from. We may see the market settle a bit in 2017 but we’re heading into the New Year with good momentum behind us,” said Brenda Marchwicki, President of the 78 ShopInRI

Rhode Island Association of Realtors. Realtor data also portrays a continuously shrinking inventory of homes for sale with 13.2 percent fewer homes on the market this January than in January of 2016. Pending sales, which foretell closing activity in the months ahead, fell for the second consecutive month.

Trends for 2017 “Rhode Island’s housing market has a solid footing going into 2017. We are seeing diminished inventory but listing activity will pick up going into the spring selling season. Though interest rates have risen recently, we don’t expect to see a

significant hike this year so as long as we see more property listings in the next few months, we should be in good shape for the year ahead,” said Marchwicki. Marchwicki commented, “We saw a tremendously active housing market last year which continued right up to the end. The result of that was a growing shortage of inventory. We’re thankful for the conditions that have encouraged people to buy but we’re hopeful that we’ll see more of a balance between supply and demand in the spring market. The number of singlefamily homes for sale in December fell almost 19 percent from 12 months prior, leaving just over a 3-month supply of homes for sale which put sellers firmly in the driver’s seat.”

Marchwicki also reported, “We’re just on the heels of the spring market which is when we typically see more homes going up for sale. Right now demand is outstripping supply, so if homeowners have been thinking of selling, they should know that in most areas, market conditions are clearly in their favor. There’s no telling how long the combination of pent-up demand and low interest rates will last.” The condominium market saw double-digit growth in sales activity and median price, rising 36.8 percent and 20.8 percent respectively. Though the number of condos available for sale has fallen year-over-year every month since March of 2016 and sales under contract fell slightly in December, condominium sales are not expected to slow significantly. This sector of the market had been hampered by stringent lending regulations through the first half of 2016, but laws enacted to provide some relief to borrowers has allowed potential buyers to flood the market. “Overall, we’re in good shape heading into 2017. As prices rise, more people will see gains in home equity which will give them more freedom to move. That should provide some relief to our supply shortage,” commented Marchwicki. Condominium sales were also robust in January, rising 31.3 percent from 12 months earlier. The median sales price increased 1.6 percent and the supply of condominiums for sale remained stable, rising .26 percent. Pending sales also remained relatively flat, falling just .45 percent year-over-year. In keeping with the other sectors of the market, the number of multifamily home sales rose 20 percent in January from January of 2016. This sector also saw the largest gain in median sales price of all property types with an increase of 20.8 percent. Both listings and sales under contract were down from 12 months earlier however, a sign that sales of multifamily properties could abate in the months ahead. The Realtor Association pointed to pent up demand, low interest rates, rising consumer confidence and the improved economy for last year’s strong showing. New mortgage options also enabled more buyers to enter the market. Statistics reported by the Rhode Island Association of Realtors represent all Realtor-assisted sales transacted through the State-Wide Multiple Listing Service. ShopInRI 79

It is common knowledge that Providence is well known for its endless assortment of fantastic eateries. It is important for outsiders to know that in addition, Providence is the host of many places to visit that will offer fun and interesting things to do throughout the year. Whether searching for historic sites, family friendly fun, or culinary delights, Providence boasts that and so much more.

Providence Children’s Museum

The Arcade In basic terms, the Arcade, at 130 Westminster Street in the Financial District of downtown Providence is a place for shopping and dining, but it so much more than that. Built in 1828, it hosts the country’s oldest indoor shopping mall, and is surrounded by ornate 19th-century city architecture that is the essence of classic urban beauty. The two-story Arcade, with its arched glass ceiling and fancy ironwork is typical of the lavish public spaces of 200 years ago. Stores offer interesting and creative clothing, jewelry, artwork, gifts, and vintage household decorative items. There are also lots of places to find coffee and lunch. 401-454-4568

Silly Laws

In Alabama it is completely fine and legal to drive the wrong way down a one-way street as long as you have a lantern attached to the front of your car. Flamingo owners beware: in the state of Alaska and the City of Juneau you aren’t allowed to bring your pet into a barber shop. Arkansas seems to be a bit sensitive about their name because it’s strictly prohibited to pronounce ‘Arkansas’ incorrectly when in the state. The city of Denver in Colorado prevents you from lending your vacuum cleaner to your next-door neighbour, the guy two blocks down though? That’s completely fine. If you’ve got a potty mouth you might want to avoid working at a funeral home because in Georgia it’s illegal to use profanity in front of a dead body that’s in a funeral home or a coroner’s office. Want your car to smell nice? Too bad folks from Illinois, because it’s illegal to hang “obstructions” in from the rear view mirror, this includes air fresheners, GPS units and knick-knacks. In Maine, after January 14th you will receive a fine for still having your Christmas decorations up. Loiterers beware: it’s illegal to stand around any building without a ‘good reason’ to do so in Minnesota. In Rhode Island you’re not allowed to sell toothpaste and a toothbrush to the same customer on a Sunday. 84 ShopInRI
