How Children Develop Musically
Every child is different
but the sequence in which their musical abilities unfold is almost always the same. The exact timing can vary a lot, so don’t take the timeline below too seriously but do use it as a guide to what to watch out for and to help you choose the most appropriate instruments and play activities...
0-1
Babies - Birth to 1 year
0-3 Months Responds to voice, touch and eye contact from
day one. Lots of singing and gentle rhythmic movement are nurturing for them and for you too. Responds to sounds and vibrations from the natural world and from instruments which you might play for them or help them to play.
3-6 Months Pays attention to own name, to familiar sounds and singing - be sure to repeat (and repeat and repeat). Actively tracks movement so introduce instruments that roll. Begins to sense and move to the beat. Learns to grasp and hold - loves to rattle and shake things.
6-12 Months Can hold an instrument or beater and make hitting, shaking and rattling motions. Mimics simple actions - so if you play an instrument, they will try it out like you.
1-2
Toddlers - 1 to 2 years
Plays on own and initiates own play, so offer a selection of instruments to explore. Starts to understand own accomplishments and will show you their musical discoveries. Loves to imitate and will copy the way you hold and play an instrument.
2-3 Young children - 2 to 3 years
Will join in with other children during play, so get a band together of all ages. Offer a selection of instruments, large and small and do lots of swapping so everyone gets a go. Can play with more subtlety and will spend time exploring and repeating interesting sounds. Can also handle more intricate hand movements, so use instruments which demand two-handed coordination and a little more stamina to play.
4
3-4
Foundation Stage One 3 to 4 years
Can play in time and sing in tune. Can start to find tunes and rhythms on instruments by ear. Can direct others and suggest musical ideas. Do lots more playing together and offer a selection of large and small instruments which demand two-handed coordination as well as more nuanced listening skills.
4-5
Foundation Stage Two 4 to 5 years
Can react and respond to others playing instruments. Can initiate and follow musical ideas. Will spend longer periods of time honing skills on an instrument so offer more ‘grown-up’ instruments to play such as djembes. Extend periods of musical exploration and offer guided sessions, where children are playing together in a more structured way.
Look out for these symbols...
Why Sound Children instruments are so special
These are real musical instruments, not plastic toys: they’re just like professional ones but scaled-down to suit smaller players. They’re all individually made by hand from natural, tactile and sustainably grown materials and the decorative designs are from paintings by Balinese children. They’re also safe and durable - but remember that babies and small children should always be supervised and please always read the background notes that accompany each kit.
Children instinctively appreciate the quality, and materials of these instruments and the fact that they’re not being patronised. They also learn to respond in a more sensitive way than with plastic ones.

All of our children and staff absolutely loved this product. The beautiful woven basket promised a world of exciting experiences and its contents did not fail to deliver. The children loved exploring all of the unusual instruments individually, and the practitioners loved the additional information on their countries of origin and the materials they were made of. The scope for discussion was huge and will, we are sure, go on for some considerable time to come. The amazing price, which is heavily discounted for education settings, made this a great buy and one we would recommend to any setting working with young children. An absolute delight to explore! Dream Drum Kit
The award-winning Dream Drum is so easy and satisfying to play that it really is an instrument for everyone. You can play it solo, you can play “four hands” (or more), you can add simple percussion instruments, you can sing along, add melodic instruments, use as a sound background for story-telling, you can play in small groups... and much more.
I love it as the children can carry it around easily and often you'll hear from a hidden corner the melodic chimes of the drum. The sound carries so gently through the air that sounds from the far end of the garden can call other children to join in. Most importantly, it doesn't drive you mad in a classroom. It creates a feeling of calm. Reception Teacher Contents: Dream Drum, Carry Case, 3 Beaters, Stand, Dream Drum Guide, Stick on Numbers

Training
A natural and intuitive approach
The Sound Children approach is so natural and intuitive that any enthusiastic care-giver should be able to get started by themselves and see results right away. But adding some training can pay real dividends: speeding up the transfer of expertise, boosting your confidence and helping you tune the approach to the realities of your setting and the specific needs of your children.
Regional Training Days
For Early Years Professionals, New Parents and Young Families.
Starting in 2014 we're running a series of Early Years Music Training Days at venues all over the country, in partnership with local Universities and Children's Services.
Covering all the essentials, these will be hands-on sessions and no music background or music training is needed. We'll show you the most effective ways of making music with babies and young children and, most importantly, we'll support you in actually making music yourself. You'll leave the workshop feeling musically confident, enthusiastic and ready to carry on making music with your little ones. Training
