How can I introduce World Music into my school?

The best way for young people to learn about other World Music styles is to have a practical experience of making the music themselves...

Involve me and I will understand”. Confucius 450 B.C. World Music instruments are now readily available and inexpensive and I and others have written practical guides to help non-specialist teachers to deliver lessons.

Is it really possible for a teacher without a background in music to run a drumming or other World Music class?

So far World Music has had a massive impact in schools all over the UK. Pupils, teachers, head teachers, parents and local communities have all benefitted in different ways. Can I get funding for drums and World Music instruments from my local authority?

Yes - the big funding initiative at the moment is Whole Class Instrumental and Vocal Teaching (WCIVT), also known as Wider Opportunities for Music. Get in touch with your Local Authority Music Service (visit www.thefms.org to find their details) to find out how you can access this funding.

How can I make the teaching of World Music sustainable?

For me the clue to making the teaching of World Music sustainable is to link it across as many subjects in the curriculum as possible. The more pupils who are involved in the project, and the more diverse their interest, the more fully and easily they will understand and want to become involved in the music-making. For example if you choose African Drumming, investigate making links with an African school as part of a cross-curricular whole school project on Africa, or with a Balinese school if you choose Gamelan. In music sustainability is also linked with variety, so the more varied the tunes and activities involved in your sessions, the more you will sustain the pupil's interest. For instance if you are teaching Samba, do not keep to one traditional Samba style but introduce Samba Reggae, Carnival Samba, Jungle and even Drum and Bass styles.

Also I think it is very important to introduce an element of improvisation and composition into a World Music experience.

Improvisation is intrinsic to these musical styles and so makes the experience authentic. It will also help young people to have some ownership of the music for themselves and it's what real music-making is all about - as well as fulfilling an important part of the music syllabus.

Who will benefit?

Enthusiasm and a love of music is all that is needed - plus a little preparation and ideally the support of a good teaching guide. For example, if you are thinking of teaching African drumming, I would advise that you prepare by listening to your own favourite music, paying particular attention to the beat.

Start to drum along yourself on your knees, listening out for where the strong beats are in the music. Try counting out loud the beat numbers so that you become confident with your sense of rhythm. Once you can easily identify and count the beat to whatever you hear, you're ready to lead the class.

A good teaching guide should give you background information about the style, its history, cultural significance and basic techniques and should also give you lesson plan suggestions to get you started and, most importantly, a CD or DVD as these styles are learned by copying.

GamelaninAction Real life case studies Success of the New Gamelan Havelock Academy Faculty of Arts We purchased our Gamelan from Drums for Schools in October 2010 and the project has had a significant impact from the very start.

Students can experience first hand the pleasures of playing classic Balinese instruments,creating an authentic sound that compares with the“real thing”. Instead of having to try to recreate the unique Gamelan sound on western substitutes,we are now able to produce ensemble music comparable to that heard in Bali and across other parts of Indonesia.This is broadening the horizons of our students,raising levels of engagement and creating a genuine excitement in the classroom.

The impact on learning has been significant,further raising the profile of music and the arts and enhancing the international dimensions of our curriculum. I have yet to find a student who doesn’t get excited about participating in live music making with this resource.

From the point of view of the teacher,the resource has hugely widened the possibilities in the classroom,making the teaching of world music far more accessible. The Teacher’s Guide that comes with the resource is an excellent starting point,including a range of warm

up activities, teaching ideas and complete pieces of music.

This is probably the best approach to teaching Gamelan that I have ever come across,and I have tried or experienced many on Local Authority Gamelan instruments over the last decade.

Gamelan The Gamelan sound,like the Indonesian culture it comes from,is vibrant,colourful and exotic.The music is built up from relatively simple repeated patterns,making it easy to teach and to learn.

Gamelan playing encourages careful listening, self-confidence and teamwork. It's also a very visual experience as well as an aurally and culturally rich one and an ‘end of term’ performance can be thoroughly spectacular.

Indonesian Gamelan has particular advantages as a way of introducing melody and rhythm to a class of young people. Accessibility is a word that is not often heard when discussing large musical ensembles but the Gamelan's beautifully simple pentatonic tunes and flowing rhythmic structures are really well suited to whole class learning, whatever the musical ability, academic level or cultural background of the pupils.

African Drumming African Drumming is an ideal group music-making activity for schools from KS1 to KS4. Everyone is able to participate regardless of ability and it's often the“difficult”or“hard-to-reach”pupils who make the most startling progress. Drumming reaches the children other lessons fail to touch and the transformative power of music can be seen and felt very strongly in African Drumming classes.

African Drumming is an excellent way for young people to learn the basic elements of music as well as experiencing a different musical culture and the fun and sense of achievement of making music as part of a group.

Although one drumming lesson a week per class is probably all you'll be able to timetable, if you follow the lesson plans in the Teaching Guides, it's enough for even a mixed class to make rapid progress. Lunch time and after school drumming clubs are also very popular and the initiative for many such groups comes from the children themselves.You may be pleasantly surprised at how much extra out of class effort your pupils are prepared to put in!

We all recognise the Samba music of the famous carnivals of Rio and Sao Paulo and percussive Sambas played by the fans that travel with the Brazilian football teams but Samba has many other moods and musical styles. In the north of Brazil Samba is heavily influenced by the reggae beats of the Caribbean and in the sprawling suburbs of the cities younger members of Samba schools enjoy incorporating modern Hip Hop and Drum and Bass beats into their Sambas.

A wide range of instruments are employed in a Samba band and there are many rhythmic layers blending together to produce intricate syncopated music. Samba is ideal for large group and mixed ability classes as simple and more complicated parts are played together to create the overall sound. As with African music, Samba is usually taught by ear with the pupil listening to instructions and then repeating the music the teachers have been playing. Playing in a Samba ensemble is also an excellent platform for improvisation with plenty of opportunity for individual players to improvise around the Samba's core rhythms.
