Network of Educational and Cultural Buildings Matenadaran The Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, 1920, commonly referred to as the Matenadaran, is an ancient manuscript repository located in Yerevan, Armenia. It holds one of the world’s richest depositories of medieval manuscripts and books in the world which date back to 405, when Saint Mesrop Mashtots created the Armenian alphabet and span a broad range subjects, including history, philosophy, medicine, literature, art history and cosmography in Armenian and many other languages. The collection regroups over 17,000 ancient manuscripts and several bibles from the Middle Ages. Its archives hold a rich collection of valuable ancient Armenian, Greek, Assyrian, Hebrew, Roman and Persian manuscripts.

Cafesjian Museum of Art (Cascade) The museum is run by the Cafesjian Museum Foundation, which was established in April 2002 in Yerevan under the auspices of the Armenian government and the Cafesjian Museum Foundation of America. The Armenian government provided the Foundation with a half-constructed “Cascade” complex and the surrounding area. The Foundation invested over 35 million dollars to complete the reconstruction of the Cascade. At the core of the museum’s permanent collection is the Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection of Art. The museum was inaugurated on November 7, 2009, when I was in Yerevan. The opening ceremony was attended by the Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan, minister of culture Hasmik Poghosyan, minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan, as well as representatives of diplomatic missions in Armenia, various artists and political figures. It is said that “the museum project represents one of the most ambitious works of contemporary architecture undertaken in any of the former republics of the Soviet Union. The project was designed by the New York based architecture firm David Hotson Architects. The New York Times described it as “a mad work of architectural megalomania and architectural recovery, one of the strangest and most spectacular museums in decades.

Mother Armenia / Military Museum of Armenia Mother Armenia is the female personification of Armenia. Her most visual rendering is a monumental statue in Victory Park overlooking the capital city of Yerevan, Armenia. The current statue replaces a monumental statue of Joseph Stalin that was created as a victory memorial for the Great Patriotic War, during Stalin’s reign of the Soviet Union. When first built, it was a military museum containing exhibits about World War II. Now a large proportion of the exhibition space is devoted to the Nagorno-Karabakh War of the 1980-90s. There are personal belongings, weapons and documents of the heroes and walls are decorated with their portraits.

Yerevan is a major educational centre in the region. It has 166 nursery schools, 259 public education schools, 12 state musical & art schools and several state owned schools for special needs. At present, 90 institutes of higher education are functioning in the Republic of Armenia. As a capital city, Yerevan has the majority with 71 higher educational institutions, 19 out of which are state universities and the rest 52 are private.

Yerevan State University (YSU) is the largest university in Armenia. It was founded on May 16, 1919. Its faculties contain 110 departments. Of its 3,150 employees, 1,190 comprise the teaching staff which includes 25 academicians, 130 professors, 700 docents (associate professors), and 360 assistant lecturers. The university has 400 researchers, 1350 postgraduate students, and 8,500 undergraduates, including 300 students from abroad. The academic year is from September 1 through June 30.Engineering/Architecture Institution State Engineering (Architecture & Construction) University of Armenia The State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) is a technical university located in Yerevan, Armenia. Established as the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1933, it provides educational and research programs in various fields of technology and science related to engineering. Currently there are more than 10,000 students and more than 1,000 faculty members.

The history of the Armenian school of Architecture and Construction started in 1921, with opening of a Technical School in the newly established Yerevan State University. The new specialties taught in the school included the specialties of Engineering and Architecture and Engineering and Hydro-technology. In February 1927, these specialties were renamed into Civil Engineering and Construction of Roads and Hydraulic Facilities respectively.

Yerevan State Medical University Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi (YSMU) is a leading medical school in Yerevan, Armenia. YSMU was founded in 1930. The faculties or the departments are the structures organizing the academic process. These faculties are: General Medicine, Stomatology, Pharmacy and Military Medicine. After graduating from the University the students enter Internship or Residency. The main units in the academic process are the chairs, where students, interns and residents get their education. Almost all the theoretical chairs are located in the 3 blocks of the University. The Clinical Chairs are located in the University Hospital, and different hospitals and clinics of Yerevan. 661 representatives of the teaching staff, including 8 academicians, 122 doctors of medical science and 375 candidates to doctor of medical science work at different chairs.

Yerevan State Agrarian (Agriculture) University One of the biggest higher educational and scientific centers of the RA the State Agrarian University of Armenia (former Armenian Agricultural Academy) was founded in 1994 on the basis of the Armenian Agricultural and Yerevan Zootechnical and Veterinary Institutes. These two higher educational institutions, in their turn, were established in 1930 on the basis of the faculty of agriculture of Yerevan State University. The educational structure of the State Agrarian University of Armenia is composed of six departments (Agronomy, Foodstuffs Technologies, Economics, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, Farm Mechanization and Transportation, Hydro-melioration, Land Tenure and Land Cadastre) Yerevan State Economic University (x2) The training of economists with higher education began at YSU in 1921 at the Faculty of Soviet Construction (later at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Social-Economic and Faculty of Economics). In 1975 this Faculty served as a basis for founding Yerevan Institute of National Economy. In 1984 the Faculty of Economics was reopened in YSU with a specialization in Economic Cybernetics. Nowadays the Faculty of Economics offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate (including doctoral) degrees. The educational system is three-level system here: Bachelor, Master of Arts and PHD. More than 80 lecturers are involved in the educational process of this faculty at 6 chairs. Master’s programs of this faculty are: Theory of Economics / Modeling of Economics / Information Systems of Management / International Economics / Business Management / Finances, Crediting and Monetary Circulation Yerevan State Biological University The Faculty of Biology was founded in 1933, but the process of its founding had started right from YSU foundation. Over different periods of time it used to exist as an Academic Division at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Pedagogical Faculty of YSU. Currently the faculty is structurally comprised of eight chairs: Botanics, Zoology, Human and Animal Physiology, Ecology and Nature Protection, Microbiology and Biotechnology of Plants and Microbes, Genetics and Cytology, Biochemistry and Biophysics. Scientific-research groups act at each of these chairs, included in five scientific-research laboratories: General Biology, Biochemistry of Nitrogen Compounds, Biology and Biotechnology of Fungi, Biophysics of Subcellular Structures and a joint laboratory with YSU Faculty of Physics on Structural Biophysics. This faculty is one of the largest highly ranked scientific-research centers of YSU. We must underline that more than 100 researchers are involved in the scientific-research process here.

Yerevan State Romance Germanic Philology University There are English and German language laboratories, Foreign literature and Translation Studies Rooms, French and Italian Studies Centres in the faculty. At present 1700 students study at the faculty. The main fields of the scientific investigations of the chairs are: Semantics, Text Linguistics, Lexicology, Pragmatics, Problems of Foreign Literature, Modern Methods of Teaching, Foreign languages, Translation Studies as well as other aspects of language studies.
