The Ascended. The brothers Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué had to face several challenges in order not to die. After passing each of them and defeating the Lords of Xibalba, the brothers were ascended to heaven, turning Hunahpú into the sun and Ixbalanqué into the moon. The story goes that every time the sun and the moon are set, it is because they descend to confront the Lords of Xibalbá, and if they are victorious, they ascend again to give us light day and night.
