THE EXPERIMENT
From rank-and-rent test to AI content case study I started this experiment to test rank-and-rent websites: local sites built to rank for service keywords, with no real business behind them. The local service pages didn't really take off. The blogs did. So this turned into a case study about what AI content can (and can't) do on local websites, and one unexpected difference between the two sites: social media. The one deliberate difference: Site 2 had social media from day one (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest). Site 1 had none.
The setup Two local websites Exact same niche, ~100 local service pages + ~21 blog posts each
Brandable domains Not exact match domains (EMD)
Built manually WordPress + Elementor. Only the content is AIgenerated.
No Google Business Profile Neither site has a real business behind it
n8n content pipeline ~10 AI agents, one per task: research, writing, images, internal links, tables
Models & data DataForSEO, GLM 5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT Image 2.0
Similar prompts Different keywords targeted on each site
Indexing service Used to help get social media posts indexed
Quick takeaways Local service pages barely rank without a real business. Without a GBP and a real company behind it, local service keywords are very hard to win. Very low competition locations or an exact match domain may change this, which is the next test. AI blog content can rank and appear in AI search, when the topics, structure and extras are planned well. Social media likely helps, not as a traffic source, but as a signal: the site with social media won on almost every metric.

FINDING
AI blog content can rank, and gets picked up by AI search Both sites' blogs got indexed (18 of 21 and 21 of 21), hold stable average positions, and appear thousands of times in Google's generative AI features. AI content isn't the problem by itself. What matters is the decision layer behind it: which topics, which format, and the extras that make a page more useful than the existing results, like tables, infographics and internal links. In this setup, each of those is handled by a dedicated agent in the pipeline. AI amplifies the decisions behind the content. The same pipeline with poor topic selection would produce the same volume of pages, and far fewer clicks.

Site 1
Google Search Console, last 28 days.
Without a real business and a Google Business Profile, ranking for local service keywords is very hard. Google has plenty of real local businesses to show for those searches. About a fifth of the pages (the blogs) brought more than 10 times the clicks. SOCIAL MEDIA
What each platform actually did Facebook
Posts never got indexed in Google, but they did send some referral traffic (45 sessions in GA4).
Posts sometimes got indexed on their own in under 24 hours, but sent no traffic, since posts have no clickable links.
Pins barely got indexed, even with a paid indexing service, and didn't stay indexed. Good engagement inside Pinterest, very few clicks to the website.

Site 2: Pinterest overall performance and impressions over time
I can't prove causation: the sites target different keywords, and two sites are a small sample. But the gap is large enough that I'm treating social media as a likely factor, as a brand and trust signal rather than a traffic source.

WHAT I'D DO DIFFERENTLY
Lessons for the next local site Start social media from day one on any new site, even with minimal effort. Lead with the blog on sites without a real business, and treat local service pages as a longterm bet. Invest in the decision layer, not just the writing. Topic selection, format and on-page extras made the AI content work. Test an exact match domain for the local pages. This is the next experiment. Measure blogs and local pages separately in Search Console. Site-wide totals hide where the traffic really comes from.
Your experience? Have you tested AI content on local websites? Did local service pages rank without a Google Business Profile, or did social media make a difference for you? I'd like to compare notes.
