12 SEO Mistakes That Stop Your Website From Growing Why SEO often doesn't deliver, even when you're paying for it, and what to do about each problem. Based on real projects, agency work and my own test sites. By Andrei Turca · Technical SEO for local service businesses · andreiturca.com
Most SEO projects don't fail because of one big error. They fail because of small, avoidable mistakes made at different stages. The mistakes below are grouped by where they start, so you can quickly see which stage of your SEO might be broken. STAGE 1
Before any work begins
01
No detailed analysis at the start Without an audit of the site, the market and the competition, every action is a guess. On one of my test sites, I recovered the traffic by deleting 70% of the content. Without an audit, I wouldn't have known which pages to remove. Fix: ask for an audit in the first month, with a prioritized list of actions.
02 Cookie-cutter SEO packages "5 articles and 5 backlinks a month" can work where there's no real competition. In competitive markets, the same package can run for six months with nothing to show for it. Fix: ask how much of the strategy is tailored to your market and competitors.
03 Unrealistic expectations If nobody checks whether the top competitor got there in 2 months or 2 years, the timeline is made up. Many disappointments come from poor communication, not poor work. Fix: agree on phases, timelines and what success means: traffic, leads or authority.

04 A domain with a bad history Rare, but brutal. A client's "new" domain had been used as a redirect back in 2004. After 30+ pages and some quality links, Google still wouldn't index it. Fix: check any domain in the Wayback Machine before buying it.
STAGE 2
During the work
05 Targeting the wrong keywords SEO tools show everyone the same estimated data, so everyone chases the same terms. On the other side, some content targets topics nobody searches for, just to fill a monthly quota. Fix: target terms that are slightly less valuable but far less competitive, checked directly in Google.
06 Content with no real value Google no longer indexes everything. If a page says what a hundred others already say, it may be ignored, whether a person or AI wrote it. Some searches want a video or a short list, not an article. Fix: add something new to every page: an example, data, a different angle or a better format.
07
Spending budget on low-impact fixes A page with a PageSpeed score of 7/100 can still rank first in a competitive niche. Keyword density, word count and DR/DA scores are rarely the real problem. Fix: prioritize tasks by estimated impact, not by what a tool flags in red.

08 Outdated black hat tactics Reports full of new backlinks and rising authority scores mean nothing if the links come from spam directories or sites Google has already ignored. Fix: judge the work by traffic, calls and leads, not by report metrics.
09 Misusing AI AI amplifies what you already do, good or bad. And there's no separate magic for "AI search": good SEO for Google largely carries over to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Bing. Fix: use AI to speed up research and drafts, with human expertise deciding what to write.
STAGE 3
10
Things nobody checks Hidden technical issues Wrong robots.txt rules, forgotten noindex tags, broken canonicals, content Google can't see. In one case, pages weren't indexed because Google read a harmless setup as cloaking. The site looked perfect on the surface. Fix: work with someone who checks the technical side, not just content and links.
11
No periodic audits A client got 6 new pages a month for a full year, with traffic still near zero. Only the yearly audit showed the keyword research method was wrong. After changing it, traffic started to grow. Fix: review what's working every 6–12 months, even if it means deleting content.
12
Traffic grows, sales don't The traffic may be going to informational articles by design, the money pages may target the wrong searches, or visitors may get stuck before they contact you. Fix: check which pages bring leads, and watch real visitor sessions in a tool like Microsoft Clarity.

Ask your SEO agency
If you work with an agency, these questions reveal most of the problems above. Vague answers are a signal to get a second opinion. Did the project start with an audit, and can I see it? How much of the strategy is tailored to my market and competitors? How many of our pages actually bring traffic, and what's the plan for the rest? Is each task prioritized by its estimated impact? Are we optimizing for traffic, leads or authority right now? How long until we should see real results, and why? When is the next review of what's working and what isn't?
