Sheppard Robson is leading the detailed design and co-ordination of the £1bn expansion plans of Westfield London, at Shepherd’s Bush.

The project delivers over a million sq ft of retail space, including a new 230,000 sq ft flagship John Lewis store, and 1500 new homes within the wider development. The retail expansion provides 70 new retail units and kiosks in the first phase, and also includes a major new restaurant wing and additional retail units improving the connection between the retail and the existing public realm.

These ambitious plans result in a complex scheme on a site that includes a dense network of London Underground lines and sidings, existing bus routes and bus station, and working around key roads and pedestrian routes. Sheppard Robson has led the process of knitting together retail, residential and public realm elements into a cohesive whole.

The Westfield London Phase 2 project is a key component of the regeneration of the White City Development area, encompassing the development of the BBC Development on Wood Lane and the Imperial College masterplan to the north.

Responsibilities - Construction site visits - Responsible for producing and delivering tender and construction packages for specific building parts.

- Drafting technical drawings in Revit.

- Reviewing and amending the Revit 3D model and 2D drawings according the building regulations, code compliance and functionality.

- Coordinating M&E services between architects, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers.

- Compiling detailed documentation and gathering technical information to assist the specification writing.

First constructed in 1228, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi was a trading post for German merchants before becoming a customs house under Napoleon in 1806. Depicted by Canaletto and other masters, and photographed numberless times as the impressive but anonymous backdrop for the Rialto, the Fondaco - at 11,000m2 one of Venice’s largest buildings - now stands as a muted icon of the Venetian mercantile era. Twice destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 16th century, the Fondaco was radically altered again in the 1930s, its structure almost completely replaced by reinforced concrete to allow its new use as a post office. The Fondaco has constantly reshaped itself, accumulating many layers of ‘authenticity’: its preservation is a history of change.

The Fondaco’s current role as a post office has diminished in tandem with the native population of Venice: an annual decline of 1.2 percent mirrors the gradual emptying out of the building. Today, it is largely unused for the first time in centuries. The latest evolution of the Fondaco will reactivate the building a thriving contemporary trading post, in the form of a modern department store. In tandem with the department store, the renovation will create three major areas of commerce-free public space.

Inside the building, 75% of the Fondaco’s structure will remain untouched. Occasional interventions in the 1930s structures will consolidate rooms into larger spaces while crucial historic elements like the corner rooms will be preserved. Some uses of the building, lost for centuries, will be resurrected: the walls of the gallerias will once again become a surface for frescoes, reappearing in a contemporary form.

Department stores have historically been incubators for the arts, collaborating with graphic designers, fashion designers, musicians and artists in a very public venue. With the Cultural Masterplan for the Fondaco, our ambition is to resurrect this relationship between art and commerce - a classically Venetian mixture.

OMA’s renovation scheme - composed both of architecture and public programming - continues the Fondaco dei Tedeschi’s tradition of vitality and adaptation. Venice will acquire a landmark that will become a shared civic facility and a crucial element in the cultural fabric of the city.

Project Architect at IMA 2011 - 2014 from Concept Design to Handover (Stages 2 - 6) € 1.000.000 Built

This housing project was my first responsibility as a project architect.

2 siblings who share the same plot own a house each. Each dwelling has an average gross floor area of 350 m². The project was completed in 2 phases, the first completed in 2012 and the second one in 2016.

Responsibilities: - Overseeing the project through all RIBA stages from Concept to Construction.

- Liaising meetings with the client, reviewing site information and initial project brief.

- Preparing the Concept Design and working on different options to accommodate the client’s needs.

- Developing documents for the planning application and submitting drawings to planning authorities.

- Preparing Developed Design, drafting technical drawings and compiling packages for tender.

- Finalizing tender documentation and evaluating subcontractor proposals.

- Liaising with Structural and Mechanical engineers.

- Overseeing the project through the Construction stage until the handover to the clients.

The house serves the needs of a 3 member family, a young couple and their daughter and took its nickname from its location, a sloped-terrain plot in a small town on the outskirts of Nicosia.

In respect to the mountain the house adapts to the landscape and disruption of the topography is kept to the minimum. The simplistic morphology and materiality is derived from the owners’ needs to reduce the building cost. Any ornamentation is omitted and more attention is given to the internal space quality and comfort.

The solid and open parts of the envelope are oriented in relation to the sun path and air circulation. This maximizes the sun gain during winter and assists natural ventilation during summer. Therefore climate sustainability is praised and mechanical heating and cooling is kept low throughout the year.

The functions of the house are split in two categories: the living and sleeping areas. This is expressed formalistically as well by two rectangular volumes placed perpendicular to each other forming an L shape.

The larger rectangular volume orientated from North to South contains the living category: seating, dining, kitchen, guest WC, office and the parking area. This volume is split in three levels: the lower ground, the ground floor and the mezzanine. Its external walls are predominantly solid except the narrow side facing South. This side is transparent to offer views of the mountain across the house and to allow the natural light permeate all the way to the back of the volume.

All living areas are very well lit naturally by the double height glass facade and are celebrated by the double height space which creates a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere to spent the day in.

Other than the two parking areas on the lower ground floor, there is also a small studio which serves as a guest house from time to time or can accommodate a potential future member of the family. The parking and the small studio are aligned with the street level and have separate access from the rest of the house making them ideal to be used as an independent unit if necessary.

The rest of the rooms, the sleeping areas and amenities are positioned in a smaller single level volume which is oriented from East to West. Its external walls are also predominantly solid with a few openings to the South for natural light.

An outdoor space is created above the parking area in the junction of the two volumes, with undisturbed views to the village and surrounding area.

The idea of the building is influenced by the neighbouring Navajo Nation which is created along the banks of San Juan River. Because of the water people have created small settlements which are sustained by the productive landscapes.

In our case we make a radical approach. We introduce the idea of a dam to collect the water from two main water steams. This way we want to create new potentials for the area and influence its future development. We use the typology of a gravity dam in combination with a hydroelectric dam to contain the water, provide irrigation and create a self-sustain building. The functions of the building are cascading in front of the massive concrete volume. This way we maximize the sun gain and create terraces of productive landscapes.

These are cultivated and sustained by the prison’s inmates. The connections inside the building are achieved by the sloping floors which run from the top to the base of the building. This creates a continuous route and an ease access between the floors. Additionally, two cores create vertical connectivity with stairs and elevators in case of emergency. These cores accommodate as well the WC and showers.

In plan the building is unfolded along a 5 meter wide corridor. This corridor provides access to the cells which are directly connected to the terrace with the productive landscape. Inmates have natural sunlight and ventilation and are directly connected to nature. This plan typology creates maximum flexibility and with the abolishment of a few walls a space can be transformed from a cell to a public space and vice versa.

Due to increased number of students and the lack of space the city of Zagreb announced a competition to enlarge and improve its current facilities. Our proposal started as an analysis of the needs and aimed to create a new improved typology building in the existing University campus.

In order to create an improved communication between the functions of the Science Faculty we are proposing and horizontal and vertical communication which is inspired by the “Cardo and Decumanus” in ancient Rome and “The Forum”, the vertical Tower in our proposal, as the center piece of the development. A new special quality is created at the campus which connects functionally and aesthetically the areas of the building and the rest University buildings of the campus.

A funk-tional whole.

The resulting volume creates direct and harmonious connection between the neighborhood, the campus and city. Communication fits into the existing infrastructure, connects and improves pedestrian routes within the campus and connects with the rest of city. The tower makes public a visual and functional link within the campus itself as a visual focus and link within the University.
