1.8.4 Stage 4: Conclusions

Inferences derived at the stage of analysis for the three parts, urban context, architectural style and issues was intended to help formulate the conclusion. It was planned to be represented through figures, diagrams and photographs.

1.9 Chapter Outline

Chapter 1: It is an introduction to the study, explaining its purpose, aim and objectives. It also contains some operational definitions and the research methodology used for the project.

Chapter 2: Reviews relevant literature on the background of Calcutta and the communities. It consists of literature about the prevalent styles in Calcutta (between early 18th century and early 20th century)and the development and current issues of the city. It also contains reviews of an article, containing important theories related to architectural identity, which helped devise an analytical framework.

Chapter 3: Introduces the study area, i.e. Kolkata, and the architectural character in the colonial period. It also contains surveys and the background of the diasporic communities in the city.

Chapter 4, 5: Gives a background of the two study areas, Bara Bazar and Park Street. The data collected on the structures in these areas, were represented through inventories and charts .

Chapter 6: Contains the findings and inferences of the current issues in the post-colonial period observed in the two areas.

Chapter 7: Discusses the analysis of the study. It is mainly categorized into urban context and architectural style, and details various subcategories for the selected buildings. It analyses the information collected in the form of tables and generates inferences.
