My name is Andrea Popa, I have recently finished working as an intern at Ciclostile Architettura in Bologna, Italy. I have been working in the office for six months and I have learned a lot about architecture, graphic representation and especially working as part of a multicultural team. Along the way I have been involved in numerous projects from single family houses, C45, to furniture design, Mercato Sonato, and the redevelopment of an industrial space, Piazza Grande. I can’t say what kind of an architect I am or I will be, that’s the challenge, but I know for sure that I want the people I work for and built for to be happy with the service I provide. While perusing my projects you will encounter that most of the projects are houses. I chose to present them because they are the projects I had fun working on and each one has a different and unique approach. You can also find more complex projects on which I worked in teams and my thesis project. Besides architecture I am interested in cooking, food, travelling, cycling, swimming, reading, painting, making people happy, and enjoying life. I hope you will enjoy the journey ahead.

HOUSE IN NATURE
PROGRAM residential DESIGN YEAR 2010 LOCATION Sanovita, Timisoara
This project was my first house project in school. The location was an old tuff quarry in Sanovita, near Timisara. The project had two steps. At first we had to think of a strategy in order to recover the landscape of the quarry and to create different landscape strategies. The next step was to design a house for a family that was well integrated into the landscape. The terrain i was given had a back tall wall made of quarry, on the left and on the right neighbors and in the front the main road. This position had it’s advantages and disadvantages. An interesting part was the back wall which gave me the possibility to create an interior intimate garden and to open the spaces toward the main road.

We had to design a dynamic boat house on the Bega Canal, in Timisoara. The main goal was to accommodate the house for four young people that are part of the same group/subculture from Timisoara. I decided to design the house for the cycling community. The banks of the canal are a perfect place for riding a bicycle. The access into the house is designed in a way that it can be reached by bicycle and at the same time you can ride it inside the house. The interior is designed to accommodate the needs of its inhabitants.

PROGRAM residential DESIGN YEAR 2011 LOCATION Timisoara
We had to design a passive duplex in Timisoara’s suburbs. The site is not spectacular, but we had to take into account the construction laws imposed for the area. The design I proposed for a low energy house was inspired by traditional Romanian houses and took into account the position of the site. The ground floor is closed by a porch(prispă) which is adapted according to the position on the site. On the north side the porch is compact, protecting the entrance into the house from the north wind. On the south side however the porch acts as a parasoleil in summer in summer time and lets the winter sun in.

HERCULANE CASINO PROGRAM restoration DESIGN YEAR 2012 LOCATION Herculane Baths, Caras Severin TEAM:
Adela Filip, Arina Gheorghiu, Andrea Popa, Lidia Pacurar, Luiza Spiridon
Herculane wellness resort is one of the oldest thermal baths in Romania and the south-eastern Europe. The Casino was built between 1862 and 1864 after the plans of the German architect Wilhelm von Doderer. The edifice is designed in the specific style of the 19th century, which has in the decoration a multitude of historic styles such as: Romanesque, Gothic, up to Baroque and Rococo. The building had several phases of restauration, mainly in the communist period. In the present, the building of the casino is no longer functional. The current project proposal wants to regain the past of the building and make it a contemporary landmark. We had to make a strategy at first for the restoration project deciding what we keep and what we demolish keeping in mind the character of the building. Second we had to propose alternative functions for the building that will be suited in the future.

PRISPĂ/PORCH PROGRAM residential DESIGN YEAR 2013 LOCATION Rimetea, Romania This project was part of a course, called compared architecture. We could chose to study an existing house, street, neighbourhood or village center. The study had to take into account the history of the place, the context in which it grew and we had to identify the characteristic or patterns. Afterwards we had to design a new building or to propose a possible evolution of the village on set characteristics. I chose to study the traditional houses in Rimetea, a village near Turda, Romania. The unique part of the village is it’s center, were it can be seen the houses that were built in the 18th century, after the grate fire in 1704. The same household organisation it can been seen in the west part of Romania. The household is organised around a closed yard, with the house placed at street level and the barn closing the yard through which you access the garden. My design proposes to take this organisation into account and to make the intervention as discreet as possible, to integrate into the village landscape.

PROGRAM residential, office, market DESIGN YEAR 2013 LOCATION Balcescu Square, Timisoara, Romania TEAM Andrea Popa, Arina Gheorghiu
This is a more complex project, on the same site we had to accommodate multiple functions: apartments, offices and commercial space. The site is located in a residential area. At the same time we had to take into consideration the specific architecture of the area. Because the proposal area is now a market place we decided to keep this function and to organise around it other spaces. The square is placed inside the site and at street level we positioned the residential spaces and the commercial spaces in a U shape. And at the back we placed in a different building the offices, a few other apartments and an art gallery.

BUSINESS CENTER+PARK ‘CFR’ TRAIN STATION PROGRAM mixed- use DESIGN YEAR 2014-2015, thesis project LOCATION Arad, Romania My thesis project started with a 25.806 sqm abandoned terrain right in the centre of my home-town city, Arad. I have been intrigued by this immense property since I was in high school and had observed the demolition of the Tricoul Roșu textile factorybuilt in the 1921 and reorganized in the 1950s. In the recent years the terrain has been abandoned. The size and proximity to a residential area, had led to a rapid degradation of the surroundings and created a dangerous area for the inhabitants and the citizens of Arad. In order to regenerate and create a safe and pleasant environment for the neighborhood I propose expanding the existing park Pădurice and creating a mix of function that can function 24h. The business center will be the main financial support and create activities during the day and the retails, cafe shops, bar, restaurant will create activity during the night in connection to the park. The buildings are placed on the Nelu Aristide Dragomir Street to have a good access point to the underground parking space and to respect the urban regulation of the area, the other functions are placed in proximity to the park.

COLLABORATION WORK | CSA
PROGRAM diverse DESIGN YEAR sept 2015-march2016 LOCATION Ciclostile Architettura, Bologna, Italy
All my collaboration work so far has been for Ciclostile Architettura office in Bologna. The collaboration with the CSA has been very important for me because i learned how to work and most important to be a part of a divers and multicultural team. Along the way I have been involved in a lot of projects, some more important then others. In the portfolio I have presented the most intriguing and fun. I have done a lot of building measurements- Piazza Grabde, C45, CAD drawings, complex 3D modeling- Mercato Sonato, Piazza Grande, furniture designtable Mercato Sonato, interior organisationCasa Rav, illustration and graphic design. I have enjoyed all the work I have done, learning al lot every time.
