The City of Andover is located in Western Butler County. The city was incorporated in 1957 with a population of 166 and covering less than 1 square mile. In the 60 years since, the population has grown to over 15,000, and currently covers 11 sq. mi.

PUBLIC SAFETY

• Andover Police Dept. has 29 sworn officers, one administrative assistant, and operates the City 911 Communications Center. The dept. has received “Law Enforcement Accreditation” from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In order to receive this recognition, the dept. has to continually demonstrate compliance with a comprehensive set of over 360 best policing standards. This coveted designation, awarded to less than 5% of law enforcement agencies nationally, is considered the highest standard of excellence in law enforcement.

• Andover Fire-Rescue serves a population of upwards of 20,000 people located across 40 square miles. The Andover community is served by 38 uniformed personnel and one Administrative Assistant.

This team includes 22 full-time career firefighters, seven part-time firefighters, and nine volunteer reservists. Andover-Fire-Rescue has earned a Class 3 rating from the Insurance Service Office (ISO), positioning it within the top 12% of fire departments in the state.

There are many wonderful things happening in Andover, our big, small town. We extend a warm welcome to Phil Hamilton, Jodi Ocadiz, and Paul Wemmer as they join the City Council. Their commitment and dedication to making Andover the best place to live is greatly appreciated.

This summer marks the opening of Phases 1 and 2 of the 13th Street Sports Park, which will include five new ball diamonds, a multipurpose field, a splash pad, playground, ample parking, and walking paths. Alongside this, Central Park offers its own attractions including a playground, challenging disc golf course, scenic walking trails, fishing opportunities at Lake George, or simply a spot to relax outdoors. The newly opened Harry St. Nature Trail Park provides 1.5 miles of trails for community enjoyment. Nature enthusiasts can explore this trail, enjoying a unique experience where encounters with deer or bald eagles are not uncommon.

Please be sure to carry water as this trail lacks modern amenities. The park operates from dawn to dusk, and if the gate closes before you reach your vehicle, it will open automatically.

Andover is continuously enhancing its infrastructure with various street projects. The completion of 159th Street marks a milestone, while 2024 brings the extension of Yorktown Road to 13th Street and the extension of Founders Parkway from Onewood to Andover Road. Residents have started moving into The Heritage Skylofts and we are excited to see the additional business it will bring to the area! The Heritage Park Plaza is an urban passive park, offerings relaxation spots along its north-south linear stretch from Frontier Road to Douglas Avenue and is open to the public for enjoyment.

The Governing Body and city staff wish to extend a special thank you to the citizens of Andover for voting yes for the Family Future Forward Sales Tax Initiative in 2021. Without their vote, we would not have been able to move forward with the reimagined 13th Street Sports Park, the newly constructed Fire Station 2, located at 650 S Andover Rd. and the remodeling of Fire Station 1. Both stations were designed to be state-of-the-art facilities to ensure the safety of our community and the health and safety of our first responders. Fire Station 2 was designed with continuing education in mind with a conference room and a mezzanine for situational training!

City Council approved an initial five-year contract with ASM Global to manage the Capitol Federal Amphitheater® starting in January 2024. This partnership promises to elevate entertainment offerings at the amphitheater, with premier performances and diverse events in our community.

13TH STREET PARK

The Family Future Forward project at 13th Street Sports Park is designed to remodel the park in phases. Phases 1 and 2 include new ball diamonds, multipurpose field, walking trails, dog park, splash pad, playgrounds and restrooms. These will open in the summer of 2024. The new Community Center is part of Phase 3. Details on the planned amenities can be found at andoverks.com.

PARKS & RECREATION Andover is home to two regional parks, three mini parks, and three neighborhood parks. Andover Central Park is currently the biggest park and is home to the Capitol Federal Amphitheater®. This park features a disc golf course, a dog park, a playground, and even a fully stocked Lake George. Nearby, the Andover Public Library sits directly next door to City Hall, ensuring everything residents need is centrally located. There is also Harry Street Nature Trail Park that includes over a mile of nature trails.

The 13th Street Sports Park hosts many of the youth sporting events. There are many multi-purpose fields, sand volleyball courts, basketball court, pickleball, and access to the

Redbud Trail. The 13th Street Park underwent renovations in 2023 - 2024, so parts of the park were inactive during construction.

Through the City, there are three mini parks, small playgrounds for children in the area, and inside Cornerstone, there is a bigger park for public enjoyment as well. Through Andover, with multiple points of access, the Redbud Trail can be used by anyone in the Andover-Wichita area. It is 11 miles, starting in Andover and stretching to Wichita, with plans to push the trail into Augusta in the upcoming years.

RESERVABLE facilities The Capitol Federal Amphitheater® is a major attraction to the City of Andover. Anyone can rent the space for any event, and it is a beautiful outdoor space. Full day reservations for the Amphitheater are available year-round, but do be mindful, there is no indoor space in the event of inclement weather.

The Conference Cabin is a city operated, and an ADA accessible facility located along Yorktown road in Central Park. It is an ideal location for meetings, special occasions, and general use by the public. The Cabin accommodates roughly 25 people, and hourly reservations are available year-round.

GREATER Andover DAYS One of Andover’s longest standing traditions, Greater Andover Days, has been ongoing for over 55 years. The festival consists of a three-day festival of events, including a parade, KidFest, carnival, craft and business expo, golf and disc golf tournament, car show, concert, fireworks show, and several other fun events and

activities throughout the weekend across the city. Greater Andover Days grows and changes each year, much like the City in itself. The festival brings together families and travelers from across the AndoverWichita area. This year’s Greater Andover Days will be held on September 27 - 29, 2024.

GOLFING in Andover Andover is home to three golf courses.

There is a municipal golf course, off of US-54, and is a nine-hole, par 33 course with six par 4’s and three par 3’s. This course was built in 1988, and is a mature course for all skill levels. For more information on pricing, or any questions, contact 316.733.8070 or visit www.andovergolf.com.

There are also two private courses in Andover, including Terradyne Country Club and Flint Hills National Golf Club. Each of these courses are only available through membership, though a full-service restaurant is available to the public at Terradyne.

Terradyne features an 18-hole, champion caliber course with a 3-hole practice course and a 320 yard driving range. Flint Hills National Golf Club has hosted several professional golf tournaments, and has been ranked top 50 golf courses in Golf Digest, and is fully private to those outside of the membership.

HOMETOWN Christmas On the second Thursday in December, Andover Central Park, and surrounding establishments, become a winter wonderland. The evening starts with a tree lighting ceremony and the arrival of Santa Claus, with a variety of other fun activities through the night including decorating cookies, s’mores with first responders, photos with Santa, crafts, hot beverages, hay rack rides, and so much more!

Each year, residents can participate in the annual holiday lighting contest!

There are cash prizes for first, second, and third place, voted on by residents in the community.

Andover Sharing and Caring benefits from this event each year with donations of toys, stable/canned goods, and cash donations from Andover citizens. Caring and Sharing is a non-profit organization that provides resources to families in the area.

This celebration is fantastic for young families that are wanting to make memories and helps others in need. This year’s celebration will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
