[ director’s corner ] Hello, and happy summer! I hope you had a great first half of the year, and we look forward to seeing you throughout the rest of it. As you can see with this issue we are super excited to be celebrating America 250, a major milestone for our country.

It’s also the 200th anniversary of Anderson – what a great year!

We hope you’ll like our patriotic decorations at our locations as we get into the spirit of celebrating.

I’d also like to highlight one of my favorite recurring programs, Books and Community. Every year we choose a topic, give away free copies of the book, and host discussions and events centered on it. This year, as you may have guessed, our topic is America 250, with a focus on the Revolutionary War. We selected three books so readers of all ages can participate, and we’ll offer several programs throughout September. I hope you’ll join us!

Finally, as we celebrate America 250, this is a great time to explore local history. The library offers an excellent collection of local history materials, including old newspapers on microfilm, yearbooks, and many other resources. Best of all, our staff is here to help you make the most of them.

Library Spotlight Join us fo MUSIC NIGHT on Friday, July 10th at 6:30 PM! Turn up the volume for Music Night at the Library! Join us for an evening packed with rhythm, fun, and entertainment for all ages. Adults can enjoy line dancing and music bingo challenges. Teens will experience the ultimate Silent Disco with glowing headphones and nonstop beats. Little ones can dance the night away at our Light-Up Dance Party filled with music, movement, and colorful fun. Bring your friends, your family, and your best dance moves for a night the whole community will enjoy!

Join us for GAME NIGHT on Friday, August 14th at 6:30 PM! Join us for an exciting Game Night at the Library with fun for all ages! Adults can test their skills in an Uno tournament or dive into adventure with a one-shot D&D session. Teens can race to victory in a fast-paced Mario Kart Tournament or have giant-size fun with games like Tetris or Sorry. Youth can enjoy mini-golf, Minute to Win It Challenges, and a variety of other fun games. Classic board games can also be found throughout the branch, as well as a timed puzzle challenge for friends and families to enjoy. It’s going to be a night full of friendly competition, laughter, and community fun!

How It Works:

The Anderson County Library System is part of the SCLENDS Consortium, which allows Anderson County residents to request materials from the 22 participating library systems in South Carolina.

To search the entire SCLENDS catalog, choose all of SCLENDS in the first drop-down box on our website’s catalog.

Find what you want to borrow in our online catalog at https://scsl.ent.sirsi.net. From the hottest new releases to your favorite classic, find your next great adventure waiting for you.

Place a hold by clicking the ‘Place Hold’ button, then logging in with your library card number and PIN (hint: your PIN is usually the last 4 digits of your phone number!) Don’t know your PIN? Click ‘Forgot Password’ to reset it.

Choose your pickup library from the drop-down menu, then wait to be notified by email or text message.

Pick up your item from the library within 7 days of your hold notice. Then read, return, and repeat!

Use library resources like HeritageQuest, Ancestry Library, ProQuest Historical Newspapers: South Carolina Collection.

Try places like FamilySearch.org, Chronicling America from the Library of Congress, State Department of Archives and History, and universities for their digitized collections. All free.

VISIT IN PERSON

Sometimes you will need to go to a library, historical society, or genealogical society to look through collections in person. Contact the staff as you may need to make an appointment. They also may be able to look up records for you for a fee.

OUTREACH AND MOBILE SERVICES Since hitting the road in March, the Bookmobile has connected with thousands of residents across Anderson County through regular neighborhood stops, school visits, senior living visits, festivals, wellness fairs, and community partnership events.

One of the most rewarding parts of this work has been seeing the excitement f rom people who may not regularly visit one of our library branches.

From f irst library cards to a rediscovered love of reading, the Bookmobile is helping connect residents with library services in a way that is approachable, flexible, and personal.

At every stop, visitors can browse materials, learn about digital resources like Libby and Hoopla, along with everything else the Anderson County Library System has to offer - which is a lot!

As outreach continues to grow, so does our commitment to expanding stops, strengthening partnerships, and reaching more communities across Anderson County.
