Our popular Seed Library is back for the new year!

Early on, we will be publishing our 2026-2029 strategic plan. I want to thank everyone who filled out a survey and gave us input! Your feedback is invaluable as we look ahead to what the library of the future might hold. While at the point of writing this we still have much information to compile, I am seeing trends of patrons wanting expanded digital services, expanded adult programming, and more outreach at community events. I certainly expect those requests to make it into our goals.

Library Spotlight Welcome, New Bookmobile!

After 20 wonderful years in service, and 10 years past the recommended age of use, our beloved Bookmobile is heading for a long overdue and welldeserved retirement.

You’ll soon see our new Anderson County Library System Bookmobile rolling around town during our Welcome Tour!

With a smaller footprint than our current model, we’ll be able to maneuver in and out of more places and really open up our community outreach potential.

Also, smaller won’t mean less! We’ll have a slightly smaller overall collection capacity, but mobile rolling book carts will give us the ability to stage and quickly load materials curated for the type of event we’re attending. When you step aboard, you’re sure to find your next great read. More safety features and enhanced accessibility will allow for all patrons to come aboard and browse. And with a fresh new look, our new Bookmobile will be easy to spot around Anderson County!

LORE DROP: THE WEREWOLF OF ANDERSON COUNTY In the September 22, 1945 edition of The Independent newspaper, the driver of a 1941 Ford sedan, Walton O'Barr, blamed his car accident on a werewolf. O'Barr declared, "I saw something run out into the street...It looked to me like a werewolf so I wasn't taking any chances of running into the thing. It was better to turn the car over." Almost a week later, the newspaper reported that a posse of werewolf hunters was seeking the elusive cryptid. The article stated, "No werewolf could be found although some tracks were located...The tracks indicated the animal which made them had claws or long toe nails and a foot somewhat larger than that of a police dog." No werewolf was ever found, but you can find articles like this, as well as newspaper clippings on flying saucer sightings and vampire bats, in the Oddities folder located in our vertical file collection at the Anderson Main Library.

If your interests are less "para" and more normal, we also have information ranging from churches to schools to mills to local historical events in our vertical files.

chapter chasers 2026 adult reading challenge Grown-ups, this one is for you!

Join our year-long adult reading challenge and put more books on your ‘I read that!’ list.

Throughout the year, we’ll be hosting fun events to connect you with other Chapter Chasers as you make your way through the themes. We’ve put together 11 reading themes that offer something for everyone – read books from 10 of the 11 prompts, or read 9 books and attend a Chapter Chasers or Books & Community event and you’re a finisher.

Participating is easy!

Register: Scan the QR code to sign up for the challenge, then pick up a tracking card at your nearest library branch starting January 1, 2026. Start and finish the challenge at your own pace - any book read in 2026 that fits a theme counts.

Read: Any and all reading counts: ebooks? Yep! Audiobooks? Yep! Graphics? Yep! Each book can count toward only one theme.

Record: Fill in your tracking card. Complete 10 themes to finish. Complete all 12 to earn a bonus grand prize entry. Follow us on StoryGraph at @aclschapterchasers. You can use StoryGraph to help track your reading before you add the titles to your Chapter Chasers card.

4.

Reward: Snap a picture of your filled-out bookmark and email it to adultprograms@andersonlibrary.org, or turn it in at your local branch and get your completion prize. Choose between a reusable tote bag or a pencil pouch (while supplies last).

You'll also be entered into the grand prize drawing. Finish all 12 prompts and get a bonus entry.
