Happy spring everyone! I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and longer days. Maybe it gives you more time to read on the porch in the evening or more time to listen to audiobooks while you work in the garden planting seeds from the Seed Library? One way or another I hope you find joy in this season of growth.

Speaking of growth, you have hopefully seen the new 2026-2029 Anderson County Library Strategic Plan! We worked all winter to gather and interpret the information the community gave us about the library and are excited to move forward with that feedback. It’s important to me that we listen to the guidance of our patrons to try to evolve as needs change. To that end we will be focusing on 4 main areas. Access to the library, communication with patrons and staff, outreach and community partnerships, and the library as a place to belong. I hope you will read our plan and know that we care about you. Feel free to reach out or stop by my office anytime to chat about our goals or anything library related you’d like to share!

In the meantime, I hope you and your family will jump into Summer Reading with us this year. Be sure to sign up for the reading challenge and make time for plenty of reading (or listening) during the busy spring and summer months!

See you at the library!

See what’s ‘New 2 You’ in this issue!

Explore the beauty of South Carolina state parks for free with a South Carolina State Park Pass! Available at all library locations, state park passes allow our patrons and their families to explore every single South Carolina State Park without spending a dime.

Every park pass comes in a handy pouch that contains the following: a pass for free admittance to any of South Carolina's state parks and a pair of binoculars.

PRESERVING THE PAST, ONE FRAME AT A TIME: MICROFILM AT YOUR LIBRARY

Long before digital archives and online databases, communities preserved their stories on microfilm - and at the Anderson County Library, that history is still accessible today.

The library’s microfilm collection offers a window into Anderson County history, featuring local newspapers, historical records, and archival materials that may not be available anywhere else. From major headlines to everyday moments, microfilm captures the details that shaped life in the county across generations.

Researchers, genealogists, students, and curious residents alike use microfilm to trace family histories, verify dates and events, and explore how the community has evolved over time.

Library staff are available to assist with readers and printers, making it easy to view, save, or copy materials for personal research.

Visit our website at andersonlibrary.org/localhistory-genealogy or scan the code to learn more.

To see a list of items in our microfilm collection, scan the code.

In an age of instant information, microfilm remains a reliable, preserved record - unchanged and authentic. Whether you’re uncovering family roots or exploring local history, this enduring format continues to tell Anderson County’s story.

grow it!

ocimum basilicum

Basil (ocimum basilicum) is a fragrant, leafy herb widely used in cooking for its aromatic flavor, often described as sweet, slightly peppery, and clove-like. It belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is native to tropical regions of central Africa and Southeast Asia, though it has been cultivated around the world for centuries. Basil thrives in warm, sunny environments and well-drained soil, making it a favorite in home gardens and herb pots.

Visit andersonlibrary.org/seed-library or scan the QR code to view our Spring 2026 Growing Guide and read a message from Anderson County Soil and Water.

explore Companion Plants

Companion plants are different plants grown near each other because they provide mutual benefits. These benefits can include improved growth, natural pest control, better pollination, or more efficient use of space in the garden.

Common companion planting examples:

Tomatoes + basil: Basil may help repel pests and can improve tomato vigor.

Carrots + onions: Onions help deter carrot flies.

Corn + beans + squash: Known as the “Three Sisters,” where corn provides support, beans add nitrogen, and squash shades the soil. To learn more about companion planting, browse our collection of gardening titles.

It’s officially the Growing Season in South Carolina!

APRIL

Soil prep: Turn and amend soil with compost or organic matter. Test pH and adjust if needed.(Borrow a soil testing kit, free, from the library’s LEAP Station)

Planting seeds: Start cool-season crops like peas, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and carrots in the garden. Transplants: Harden off seedlings started indoors (tomatoes, peppers, herbs) before moving outside.

MAY

Warm-season planting: Direct sow beans, corn, cucumbers, squash, and basil after last frost. Transplants: Set out tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tender herbs.

Mulching: Add thicker mulch around plants to conserve moisture as temperatures rise. Weeding: Stay on top of weeds before they go to seed.

JUNE

Watering: Increase frequency as temperatures rise, water deeply to encourage strong roots.

Harvesting: Start harvesting early crops like lettuce, radishes, peas, and spinach.

Pest monitoring: Check for aphids, tomato hornworms, squash bugs, and other insects; treat as needed.

The Seed Library at Anderson Main is open until April 30!

2026 adult reading challenge chaserschapter

Grown-ups, this one is for you!

Join our year-long adult reading challenge and put more books on your ‘I read that!’ list. Throughout the year, we’ll be hosting fun events to connect you with other Chapter Chasers as you make your way through the themes. We’ve put together 11 reading themes that offer something for everyone – read books from 10 of the 11 prompts, or read 9 books and attend a Chapter Chasers or Books & Community event and you’re a finisher.

Participating is easy!

Register: Scan the QR code to sign up for the challenge, then pick up a tracking card at your nearest library branch starting January 1, 2026. Start and finish the challenge at your own pace - any book read in 2026 that fits a theme counts.

Read: Any and all reading counts: ebooks? Yep! Audiobooks? Yep! Graphics? Yep! Each book can count toward only one theme.

Record: Fill in your tracking card. Complete 10 themes to finish. Complete all 12 to earn a bonus grand prize entry. Follow us on StoryGraph at @aclschapterchasers. You can use StoryGraph to help track your reading before you add the titles to your Chapter Chasers card.

Reward: Snap a picture of your filled-out bookmark and email it to adultprograms@andersonlibrary.org, or turn it in at your local branch and get your completion prize. Choose between a reusable tote bag or a pencil pouch (while supplies last). You'll also be entered into the grand prize drawing. Finish all 12 prompts and get a bonus entry.
