The Anderson County Library System Newsletter

The library will celebrate Women’s History Month with the second annual Books & Community, a series of free book discussions and programs throughout March. This year, the series is centered around the book We Should All Be Feminists by award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. We Should All Be Feminists is based on Adichie’s 2012 TEDx Talk of the same name, which is available for free viewing on the TED.com website. It is a personal essay that argues for awareness of the ways inequality based on gender permeates our lives, often pulling from her own experiences in Nigeria and the United States. The series kicks off at 3 pm on Sunday, March 3 at the Anderson Main Library with the talk “From Plume Street to the Polls” by Dr. Melissa Walker of Converse College, which focuses on the women’s suffrage movement in South Carolina. Join the book discussions for We Should All Be Feminists, which will be held at the Anderson, Pendleton, Powdersville Libraries as well as the Westside Community Center and Carolina Bauernhaus Ales. Limited free copies of the book are available on a firstcome, first-served basis at all library locations, courtesy of Anchor Books. More copies are available to check out. STORYTIMES page 2

March 2019

Community leaders will bring unique perspectives to women’s shifting roles in the “Women in Conversation” panel at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 11. To highlight how women are shaping Anderson today, there will be a Speed Mentoring event at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 18. Attendees can meet female mentors from a range of careers, including women working as engineers, tattoo artists, funeral directors, business owners, journalists, and non-profit managers. Concluding the month of events, best-selling Young Adult author Megan Shepherd will be at the Pendleton and Anderson Main Libraries on Wednesday, March 27. Shepherd will discuss how she’s flipping the script on female character tropes, especially in her newest book, Grim Lovelies. Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing. This project is supported by SC Humanities, a not-for-profit organization; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture, and heritage. This project is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. See page 3 for a complete list of all the events in the series.
