What unites us presents 26 artists` artworks that talk about desire, understanding, losses and damages and also about pain. The pain of being cut, pierced by needles, razors and fishhooks. Altogether, there are 40 works in which each one of the reputed artists shows the scars of what was sewed in their intimacy; the variety of the threads that were used shows the many possibilities of naming the wounds, solitude and mourning. So rich in conceptual and formal originality, the exhibition reflects on a line of contemporary aesthetic research – the junction of art and manufacturing.

Sponsoring another project like this, CAIXA reaffirms its cultural policy, its social vocation and the disposal of making the access to the cultural spaces and their artistic schedules, that way, fulfilling its institutional role of promoting and disseminating national culture.

A exposição Aquilo que nos une apresenta a obra de 26 artistas que falam de desejo, de entendimento, de perdas e danos, e de dor. A dor do corte, da perfuração, por agulhas, giletes e anzóis. Ao todo serão apresentadas 40 obras em que cada um dos renomados artistas expõe as cicatrizes daquilo que foi costurado no seu íntimo; a diversidade dos fios utilizados mostra as muitas possibilidades de nomear feridas, solidão e luto. Rica em referências e ineditismo conceitual e formal, a exposição reflete sobre uma linha de pesquisa estética contemporânea - a junção da arte e da manufatura.

Open up your eyes to reconstruct an image that´s only possible through the point of view of a look that look to us. Be aware if everything seems weirdly familiar. If delicacy, simplicity and some word games dissemble the truth in each artwork, you should question yourself. Look for what´s inside, opening up the possibility for further dialogue.

Abra bem os olhos para reconstruir uma imagem só possível a partir de um olhar que nos olha. Se tudo lhe parecer estranhamente familiar, desconfie. Se a delicadeza, o singelo e os jogos de palavras esconderem a verdade de cada obra, questione-se. Procure o que está embutido, abrindo possibilidades para maiores diálogos.

What unites us, shows artworks whose authors talk about desire, understanding, losses and damages and also about pain. The pain of being cut, pierced by needles, razors and fishhooks. Each artist exposes the scars from a sewing process and the diversity of the threads shows the many possibilities of naming the pain, the solitude and the wounds.

Aquilo que nos une expõe obras de autores que falam de desejo, de entendimento, de perdas e danos, e de dor. A dor do corte, da perfuração, por agulhas, giletes e anzóis. De tecido e de carne furados. Cada artista expõe cicatrizes daquilo que foi costurado e a diversidade dos fios mostra as muitas possibilidades de nomear a dor, a solidão e as feridas.

Splayed hand lines demerged by the Equator imaginary line, dividing, separating into two what will always be one. The printed cartographic form in linen, the family picture, the rags, the needle work in interlining, fabric and silk and even in the hardness of the stones talk about that emotion`s baste that is supposed to be sewed in the soul so they doesn`t get lost. Like the pages of a diary where the authors write their experiences. Sometimes, the skin is the fabric and the needle penetrates the flesh, pulling the thread, going deeper and deeper in each point. Sometimes is a garment that cuts and bleeds the skin.

As linhas da mão espalmada cindidas pela linha imaginária do Equador, dividindo, separando em dois o que sempre será um. A forma cartográfica impressa em linho, a fotografia de família, os lenços, os bordados em entretela, tecido e seda e até na dureza da pedra falam desse alinhavar de emoções que se quer costurar na alma para que não se percam. São como páginas de um diário íntimo, onde os autores inscrevem suas experiências. Às vezes é a própria pele que serve de suporte e, como no tecido, a agulha vai puxando a linha, penetrando a carne, indo mais fundo a cada ponto. Às vezes é uma veste que corta e faz sangrar a pele.

Pain is a body´s requirement, so we get more conscious. It forces us to face reality and to rediscover it in its harshness for creating. When there`s no relief for pain, no solution for problems, the need of something more elevated emerges generating art.

A dor é uma exigência do corpo para tomarmos consciência. Ela nos obriga a encarar a realidade, a redescobri-la na sua crueza e assim criar. É diante da dor sem remédio, do problema sem solução, que surge a necessidade de algo mais elevado, gerador da arte.

Due to Plato, knowledge comes from amusement. So does art. And it works as an expression for the hurry to break away with the duties of life.

Segundo Platão, o conhecimento nasce do espanto. A arte também. E funciona como expressão da urgência de fugir das contingências da vida.

Pleasure and pain. This binominal allows man, seduced by the illusions of individuality, to see only what touches him personally. Those who realize what´s essential in everything, faces calmly the desire and want. Life and culture are intercrossing sewed threads.

The pain of losing a kid, a brother, the scars on the body and soul requests a more accurate look that penetrates the different layers, going deep `till it finds the place where comprehension is achieved.

Then emerges the sublime, questioning, opening the possibility of thinking about our wounds and our self-image. What causes pain? What´s harmful? Men and plants that are born unwanted are harmful invaders that cause damage and must be taken off so they stop spreading their seeds. They don`t belong. Displacement and the eternal look for a place to release anxiety is also a seduction object for investigations. The art/life relation is an option, but this exercise is, for sure, a painful via crucis. Attacking what causes it it´s required, as weaving a critical view.

Prazer e dor, eis o binômio que permite ao homem, seduzido pela ilusão da vida individual, ver apenas as coisas que o tocam pessoalmente. Aquele que percebe a essência de tudo encara com tranquilidade o desejo e o querer.

A vida e a cultura são linhas tecidas que se entrecruzam. A dor da perda de um filho, de um irmão, as cicatrizes no corpo e na alma pedem um olhar mais agudo, que penetre as diversas camadas indo fundo até encontrar aquele lugar onde se alcança a compreensão. E então o sublime emerge questionando, abrindo a possibilidade de pensar nossas feridas e as imagens que temos de nós mesmos. O que causa a dor? O que é daninho? Homens e plantas que nascem onde indesejados são invasores daninhos, causam danos e devem ser arrancados pela raiz para que cessem de espalhar suas sementes. Estão fora do lugar. A questão do deslocamento, a eterna procura de um local/casa para depositar as ansiedades é também objeto sedutor de investigações. A relação arte/vida é uma opção, mas esse exercício é, certamente, uma via crucis, dolorosa. Atacar as causas é preciso, assim como tecer um discurso crítico.

What unites us is also the unifying force and people´s cultural identity: the language. Sometimes it hurts so bad that is required to rewrite everything to exhaustion, ‘till the view gets shuffled, `till the original text gets blurred, Sometimes is just slowly unraveling a word `till only one thread remains. In artists words, ¨language and hunger: that`s what unites us.¨

Aquilo que nos une é também a linguagem, força unificadora e identidade cultural de um povo. Por vezes dói tanto que se faz necessário reescrever à exaustão, até que a vista tudo embaralhe, até que o texto original seja apenas uma mancha. Outras vezes é apenas uma palavra desfiada aos poucos até que reste apenas um fio. E, nas palavras do artista, “a linguagem e a fome: é o que nos une”.

It´s time to raise flags, to subscribe in the fabric all the esthetical experience - that will always be fictional. There´s an atavistic yarn that realign and fixate the internal torments promoting lull and producing new meanings.

It´s time to raise the white flag, demanding peace.

Adriana Varejão Contingent – Equatorial Line is an artwork so rich in references and inspiration for several questions. The digitalized photography, with only three constituting elements, affects the look and the viewer instantly connects the title with the artwork itself. If the word contingent has many meanings on the dictionary, maybe the one that better defines it is “a separate part of the whole that`s destined to someone specific”. Adriana takes back the poetic from Yanomami`s Contingent, where on an Amazonian green background, the contour of a native`s land map was plotted in red. Territories, land demarcation, limits, invasions, are only some of the questions brought out by the work. Using the equatorial line, red, cutting the hands palm, the artist enables new identifications whit the theme. A stop sign for deforestation, a cut that also injures the flesh, a huge scream for the minorities. Contingent is the synonym for what`s ephemeral and casual the same as accidental and uncertain. Is the other side of what`s essential and necessary. And is exactly on this contingencies that Varejão`s artworks stands and takes shape.

Adriana Varejão Contingente - linha do equador é uma obra rica em referências e inspiração para diversos questionamentos. A fotografia digitalizada, com apenas três elementos constituintes, impacta o olhar do espectador que faz a ligação do título com a obra diante de si. Se a palavra contingente possui no dicionário vários significados, talvez o que melhor a defina e signifique seja “parte separada do todo que se destina a alguém em específico”. Adriana retoma aqui a poética de Contingente Yanomami, onde, sobre um fundo verdemata amazônica, o contorno de um mapa das terras indígenas foi traçado em vermelho. Territórios, demarcação de terras, limites, invasões são apenas algumas das questões suscitadas pelo trabalho. Ao usar a linha do equador, vermelha, cortando a palma da mão, a artista possibilita novas identificações com o tema. Um sinal de basta ao desmatamento, um corte que fere também na carne, um grito em nome das minorias. Contingente é sinônimo de efêmero e casual, o mesmo que acidental e incerto. É avesso de essencial e necessário. Mas é justamente nessas contingências que a obra de Varejão se posiciona e ganha vulto.

Adrianna Eu Enter, an art installation where two doors opens facing each other, connected by two thin yarns that interweaves, suggest an encounter, a communication desire. As it opens to another, the subject establishes alliances, spinning an emotion network that runs through so many layers. Is not by chance that the artist elected the color red as a third element in her artwork. The color red also shows up, alive and pulsing, in what Adrianna created to talk about searches: a heart made of jumbled yarns and golden fishhooks, the Desirous, which refers to the anxiety of a loving catch, of hooking and apprehending. Impossible not to think about puncture, about the pains and wants of love, in the red color of the blood that circulates in the whole process. After Scission an object with two spools intertwined by a cleft sewed by a red yarn, leads to reflections about the scars that confirm the cuts leaving marks. After the cuts comes the pain, the parting, but also the reconstruction possibility.

Adrianna Eu Entre, instalação onde duas portas se abrem uma para a outra, ligadas por finos fios que se entrelaçam, sugere o desejo de comunicação, de encontro.

Ao se abrir para o outro, o indivíduo estabelece alianças, tecendo uma rede de emoções que perpassam várias camadas. Não à toa a artista escolheu o vermelho como um terceiro elemento em sua obra. Vermelho que aparece também, vivo e pulsante, no objeto criado por Adrianna para falar de procuras: um coração feito de linhas embaralhadas e anzóis dourados, O Desejante, que remete ao anseio da captura amorosa, de fisgar e prender.

Impossível não pensar na perfuração, nas dores e desejos do amor, no vermelho do sangue que circula em todo o processo. Depois do corte, objeto com dois carretéis de linha interligados por uma fissura costurada por um fio vermelho, leva a reflexões sobre as cicatrizes que afirmam o corte e deixam marcas. Depois do corte fica a dor, o separar, mas também a possibilidade da reconstrução.

Ana Linnemann The artist takes, as raw material for the works exhibited in What Unites Us, irregular pieces of soapstone and silk yarns. Because of its relative softness, the stone allows the thinning and the drilling, what Linnemann does intending to transform the inertia and the hardness in something where she can print her art. In the artist hands, the perforated stone equals to the pliable interweave and it is possible to embroider it in cross-stitch in the monochromatic surface. Colored flowers emerges with the help of the needles that pulls the threads through the irregular holes. Stones and silk yarns: an unlikely meeting propitiated by Ana that activate the seduction power of what is unusual. The artworks series called Xs, started in the 90s, represents her multiple intentions of unifying what normally is departed on the everyday. In the four exhibited artworks, what unites them, more than the threads, is the memory of embroider, the desire of trying out new stands of daring with delight.

Ana Linnemann A artista toma, como matéria prima para os trabalhos apresentados em Aquilo que nos une, pedaços irregulares de pedra-sabão e fios de seda.

Por sua relativa maciez, a pedra permite o desbaste e a perfuração, o que Linnemann faz com a intenção de transformar a inércia e rigidez em algo onde possa imprimir sua arte. Nas mãos da artista a pedra perfurada iguala-se à entretela maleável e é possível executar bordados, em ponto de cruz, na sua superfície monocromática. Coloridas flores vão surgindo com a ajuda de agulhas que puxam os fios pelos buracos regulares. Pedras e fios de seda: um encontro improvável que Ana propicia ativando o poder de sedução do inusitado. A série de trabalhos intitulada Xs, iniciada na década de 1990, é representativa das suas múltiplas intenções de unir o que normalmente o cotidiano afasta. Nas quatro obras expostas, aquilo que une, mais do que os fios, é a memória do bordar, é o desejo de experimentar outros suportes, de ousar encantando.

Ana Miguel Both works Ana Miguel presented in What unites us – Words Maze and 1… 2… 3… – are a reflexion about communicating, about the different places we get in human relations. The tangly threads that intercrosses, coming out of eggs with ears and mouths, suggest the frailty between the speeches and the reception that not always comes clearly. Embroidered words are shown on the way, as a web, allowing a random reading.

“Dream” might be “distant” but also can “tell” about the “other”.

Everything is part of a fantasy universe, of games and myths that the artists proposes to whom wants to follow her. If Ana Miguel uses fragile and delicate forms, incorporating different materials, nothing in her projects is neatly formal. She seeks to undo plots, recover signs and objects, involving the viewer in her particular poetic. Unlike the little wool shoes that wanders the way without leaving footprints, Ana Miguel`s artworks leave marks, create strip conductors and offers, as a myth, the possibility of following the threads and finding the exit.

Ana Miguel Os dois trabalhos apresentados por Ana Miguel em Aquilo que nos une – Labirinto de palavras e 1... 2... 3... – constituem uma reflexão sobre o comunicar, sobre os diversos pontos que atingimos na relação com o outro.

O emaranhado de fios que se entrecruzam, partindo de ovos com bocas e orelhas, sugerem a fragilidade dos discursos e a recepção que nem sempre se dá com clareza. Palavras bordadas aparecem pelo caminho, como numa rede, permitindo uma leitura aleatória. “Sonho” pode ser “distante”, mas pode “dizer” de “outro”. Tudo faz parte de um universo de fantasia, de jogos e de mitos que a artista propõe para quem quiser segui-la. Se Ana Miguel usa formas frágeis e delicadas, incorporando materiais variados, nada em seus projetos é puramente formal. Procura desfazer tramas, recuperar signos e objetos envolvendo o espectador em uma poética própria. Ao contrário dos sapatinhos de lã que percorrem o caminho sem deixar pegadas, a obra de Ana Miguel deixa marcas, cria circuitos condutores e oferece, como no mito, a possibilidade de seguir fios e encontrar a saída.

Anna Bella Geiger Recurring element in the artist poetic, the map defines its action territories, and the cartographical notion establishes it as a form and idea. We may think the map as a diagram that draws the temporalspatial multiplicity. “The map is what decides where action takes place.” says Anna Bella, who reinvent scales, distort and modifies dimensions.

The artist, using certain cartographic principles as instruments for a critical vision, starts with the non-neutrality of maps. Place, territory, world are concepts she visited assuming a critical position when talking about art and its connections with the social and political space in the world. Problematizing the frontiers and limits indicted delimitation, exposes, overall, questions related to identity, domination and power between countries and continents. The image intervention, modifying forms, eliminating parts and uprising territories demonstrate irony and acid humor. Geiger`s artistic production in the 70s is marked by an experimental survey, using different media. We may say that the four artworks that composes Variants are in the limit between painting, object and engraving; for that, she uses metal engraving printed in white linen and embroidered in red and black. The untied yarns interweaves, sometimes cutting the images and sometimes connecting them, but also raising a certain chaos in the tension of relationships. Developed and undeveloped, the occidental cultural domain are the artworks names, given to the ones that dimensions the major question touched by the artist.

More than geographical limits, the artworks awakens to the grand abysses and social, political and cultural detachment between nations.

Anna Bella Geiger Elemento recorrente na poética da artista, o mapa define seus territórios de ação e a noção de cartografia estabelece-se como forma e ideia. Podemos pensar o mapa como um diagrama que desenha a multiplicidade espaçotemporal. “É o mapa quem determina o local da ação”, afirma Anna Bella, que reinventa as escalas, distorce e modifica as dimensões. A artista, no uso que faz de certos princípios cartográficos como instrumentos de uma visão crítica, parte da própria não neutralidade do mapa. Local, território, fronteiras, mundo são conceitos visitados pela artista que assume uma posição crítica em relação à arte e suas conexões com o espaço político e social no mundo. Ao problematizar as delimitações indiciadas por fronteiras e limites expõe, sobretudo, questões relativas à identidade, dominação e poder entre países e continentes. As intervenções em imagens, modificando formatos, eliminando partes e aumentando territórios demonstram ironia e humor ácido. A produção artística de Geiger na década de 1970 é marcada pelo caráter experimental, com utilização de várias mídias.

Pode-se dizer que as quatro obras que compõem Variáveis situam-se no limite entre pintura, objeto e gravura; utiliza para tanto gravuras em metal impressas em linho branco e bordados em vermelho e preto. As linhas soltas se entrelaçam, ora cortando as imagens ora ligando-as, mas também suscitando um certo caos na tensão das relações. Desenvolvido e subdesenvolvido, domínio cultural ocidental são títulos dados às obras que dimensionam a questão maior a ser tratada pela artista. Mais do que limites geográficos, as obras despertam para os grandes abismos e distanciamentos sociais, políticos e culturais entre as nações.

Bispo do Rosário Bordar e pregar, sobrepor, desfiar, desenhar, escrever, escrever e escrever sempre foram práticas desse artista visionário e autodidata. Criador de uma obra extensa e única, apropriava-se do que já tivera outra função para mudar sentidos. A instituição foi seu atelier, seu espaço investigativo; sua história de vida, o ponto de partida para a criação. Embroidering and sewing, unraveling, drawing, writing, writing and writing has always been practices developed by this visionary and autodidact artist. Creator of an extensive and unique artwork he used to take what have had another function to reframe the senses. The mental institution was his studio, his investigative space; his life story, the starting point for his creation. His artwork talks about philosophy, literature, and musicality and instigate us to try to know better this universe full of creativity. Doing and undoing he seeks to put some order in the chaos, looking for senses to balance the reasoning. His life and artwork found understanding not in the madness but in art, in the artistic creation and not in the mental illness. He started constructing from an ethical commitment that guided his actions, many times guided by the popular religious manifestations in Brazilian Northeast, such as processions, banners and performances. In Sireno de Jesus, Escrevente is the poetic of an inventory that happens, such as in lots of other works. The worry in registering and cataloguing exhaustively, a striking sign of its production, emerges as a mounted strategy for surviving through productive occupation. Carolina Ponte The artist creates, with her artwork, a universe that refers to the ancestral art of weaving with yarns and needles. There are so many vibrant colors that counteracts, so many details and associations of shapes and drawings that we have the impression of entering a wonderful “Make Believe” world!

The thousands of minimum dots, scratches, and arabesques completes it selves forming another ones. Her works gushes, fluid and abundant, taking improbable directions, inviting us to go in different ways. And it`s impossible, on this bounce atmosphere, not to think about the challenges for body and mind, not to imagine the come and go of the needles, the yarns and the wool. The execution many times repetitive is an attribute in Carolina Ponte`s artwork that looks for harmony whit delicacy and works between what`s intuitive and what`s rational.

Caroline Valansi The artist appropriated a yellowed picture, without subtitles or references, in her artwork Web. Which is the password to begin a story, as the fairytales traditional “Once Upon a Time…”. The motion in Caroline`s artistic production is related to the human relationships, to affection, to the memories. The questions demand your attention when they expound the suggested plots in order to create new plans.

Innominate figures, with no background, detected by chance, acquire blood ties when sewn by the artist. Not pointlessly red yarn was used to connect the group and then built a consistent but also subjective narrative. What unite them is just a thread trying to rescue relationships from the ostracism, even if only in the artist imagination. Invented memories are fascinating, cause they make possible several encounters to happen. The look on the looks, fixed by time, talk about impermanence, forgetfulness; but it also remembers that the truth is only one side of the fact and that will always exist a possibility of intervening in the memories, recreating them.

Caroline Valansi Uma foto amarelada pelo tempo, sem legendas ou referências, foi apropriada pela artista em sua obra Rede, que é a senha para o início de uma história, como o “era uma vez…” dos contos infantis, uma nova narrativa que vai certamente prender as atenções. A proposta de produção artística de Caroline está ligada às relações humanas, à afetividade, às memórias. São questões que demandam sua atenção ao interpretar as tramas sugeridas a fim de criar novos planos. Figuras sem nome e sem história, encontradas ao acaso, ganham laços sanguíneos nas costuras da artista. Não à toa foi usada linha vermelho-sangue para ligar o grupo e assim construir uma narrativa coerente e subjetiva. Aquilo que une é só um fio tentando resgatar do esquecimento relações, ainda que apenas na imaginação da artista. Memórias inventadas fascinam, pois possibilitam incontáveis encontros. O olhar sobre os olhares fixados pelo tempo fala de impermanência, de esquecimento; mas também lembra que a verdade é tão somente uma vertente do fato e que sempre haverá a possibilidade de interferir na memória, a recriando.

Clarisse Tarran The artist establishes aesthetic, archetypal and mythological dialogs in her artworks, which has in embroidery the place where drawing, painting and passion for textile assembles. Recurrent subjects, such as anatomy, botanic, fauna and the word interweaves in her works creating a dream and fairytale atmosphere. In Bird and Basin, work that she elected for What unites us exhibition, Clarisse created a poetic dialog between a beautiful bird and a basin that contains the organs of a baby. The words “time”, “cradle”, “death”, “floor”, “bones”, among others, remains floating around to be combined together by chance. Embroidery flowers fill the floor of color and the cosiness of wool. In addition, the hypothetical conversation could be about bones in the ground, or maybe about a resting place, a hollow bassinet.

Everything is poetry in this artwork built as a painting, with no previous risks, where spaces are filled as fragments being added.

Clarisse Tarran A artista estabelece diálogos estéticos, arquetípicos e mitológicos em sua obra que tem no bordado o lugar de reunião do desenho, pintura e paixão pela matéria têxtil. Temas recorrentes, como anatomia, botânica, fauna e a palavra se entrelaçam em seus trabalhos, criando uma atmosfera de sonho ou contos de fada. Em Pássaro e bacia, obra que selecionou para expor em Aquilo que nos une, Clarisse criou uma conversa poética entre um lindo pássaro e uma bacia contendo órgãos de um bebê. As palavras “tempo”, “berço”, “morte”, “chão”, “osso”, entre outras, pairam soltas para serem combinadas entre si, ao acaso. As flores bordadas enchem o chão de cor e do aconchego da lã. E a conversa hipotética poderia versar sobre ossadas no chão, ou talvez sobre um lugar de repouso, um berço oco. Tudo é poesia nessa obra construída como pintura, sem riscos prévios, onde os espaços vão sendo preenchidos como fragmentos que se adicionam.

Claudia Hersz With Fridakhalism DIY the artist submerges again in the playful “do it yourself” universe. Using a needle and a thin black yarn, she follows the numbers printed in the fabric, making irregular sew points as who is drawing with graphite. As the numbers are connected, an image is created, in the same way it happens to children that are playing with a pencil in a paper, trying to untangle a surprise figure. Each sew point makes it easier to reveal. Each time the needle perforate the fabric, another detail is revealed. In Claudia Hersz` artwork the striking figure of Frida Khalo with strong features and tight eyebrows, shows up. With flowers in her hair and a showy necklace, this woman/artist who painted her reality, not her dreams, became an icon for arts and for the female universe. The pain remains present in all her career and maybe this is the sorrow Claudia wants to inscribe in that tender embroidered linen. Love and desire are in Frida`s artwork such as they are in Claudia`s. The contemporary look brought the essence of this woman that one day intended to see the world with another eyes and feel it with another skin.

Claudia Hersz Com Fridakhalismo DIY a artista mergulha mais uma vez no universo lúdico do “faça você mesmo”. Utilizando agulha e linha fina e preta, vai seguindo a numeração estampada em tecido, dando pontos irregulares como quem desenha com grafite. Unindo números cria uma imagem do mesmo modo que as crianças, brincando com lápis e papel, procuram desvendar uma figura-surpresa. Cada ponto dado aproxima a revelação.

Cada vez que a agulha fura o pano mais um detalhe surge. Na obra de Claudia Hersz é a figura marcante de Frida Kahlo, de traços fortes e sobrancelhas cerradas, que aparece. Com flores no cabelo e colar vistoso, essa mulher/artista, que não pintava sonhos mas a sua realidade, tornouse ícone das artes e do universo feminino. A dor marca sua trajetória de vida e talvez seja esse sofrimento que Claudia queira imprimir em tão delicado linho bordado. O amor e o desejo ficaram na obra de Frida assim como na obra de Claudia. O olhar contemporâneo trouxe a essência dessa mulher que um dia pretendeu olhar o mundo com outros olhos e sentir com outra pele.

Elisa Castro Adrift is the result of a listening performance project made at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, in Rio de Janeiro. Sitting on a boat facing a person picked by chance, Elisa listens in silence everything the other has to say. Parts of the testimonies, collected for two months, were, in a second moment, embroidered on nautical flags. The artist proposes the creation of a possible communication space, “to think about a person as been penetrable”. The flags used to signal during the boat`s path are, in Elisa`s artwork, the support for the several questions that came during the research. The availability to listen is maybe the greatest gift to be offered to others. In times of so much noise and interferences, we need to create those bridges, to “dredge the canals”, in order to provide more access and overtures.

Raising flags and inscribe in them the different possibilities of changing experiences and affections is required. Each embroidered word, each knot tied in the end of a proposal, marks one more step to the expansion of the inner territory of everyone that`s free.

Elisa Castro À deriva é o resultado de um projeto de escuta realizado na Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Sentada em um barco, de frente para uma pessoa escolhida ao acaso, Elisa ouve em silêncio o que ela tem a dizer. Trechos dos depoimentos, colhidos durante dois meses, foram, num segundo momento, bordados sobre bandeiras náuticas. A artista propõe a criação de um espaço possível para a comunicação, “para pensar na pessoa como um penetrável”. As bandeiras usadas para sinalizar durante o trajeto das embarcações são, na obra de Elisa, o suporte para as diversas questões surgidas durante a pesquisa. A disponibilidade para escutar talvez seja o maior presente a ser oferecido ao outro. Num tempo de tantos ruídos e interferências é preciso criar pontes, “desassorear canais”, propiciando acessos e aberturas. Levantar bandeiras, e nelas inscrever as diversas possibilidades de troca de experiências e afetos, se faz necessário. Cada palavra bordada, cada nó dado ao final de uma proposta assinala mais um passo em direção à expansão do território interior de todo ser livre.

Emmanuel Nassar The production from this artist from Para, that`s interested in the simple things, dialogs with different visual traditions.

Nassar sewed and basted the popular art, the geometry of free handed lines, the several stands that he used, the photography that shuffles with the painting, all that, to build his artwork. The stands might change, but he never stop thinking as a painter: “I`m a painter, this is my identity.”

Several questions run through his works, which has strong references in popular culture, intending, most every time, to disestablish what`s deep-seated, bringing lyricism and humor. The artwork Flag, exhibited in What unites us, follow his proposal in which art means transformation, means taking out of the context and reframing.

About the blue exuberant fabric an only strip with the words “Freedom and friendship” and an only star.

It might be a reference to the lonely star that`s in his home state flag.

The words call upon peace and the flag, a sign that has massive presence in the popular manifestations, is his screaming for freedom of expression.

Emmanuel Nassar A produção desse artista paraense, que se interessa pelas coisas simples do mundo, dialoga com diferentes tradições visuais. A arte popular, a geometria das linhas feitas à mão livre, os diversos suportes utilizados, a fotografia que se embaralha com a pintura, tudo isso e mais um pouco Nassar costurou e alinhavou para construir sua obra. Seu projeto poético vem se consolidando no limite entre o popular e o erudito. Os suportes podem variar, mas o artista nunca deixa de pensar como pintor: “eu sou um pintor, essa é a minha identidade.” Diversas questões perpassam seus trabalhos que têm fortes referências na cultura popular, pretendendo, quase sempre, desestabilizar o enraizado, trazendo lirismo e humor. A obra Bandeira, exposta em Aquilo que nos une, segue sua proposta de que arte é transformação, é tirar de um contexto e dar outro significado. Sobre tecido azul exuberante apenas uma faixa com as palavras “Liberdade e amizade” e uma única estrela. Talvez seja essa uma referência à estrela solitária na bandeira de seu estado natal. As palavras conclamam a paz e a bandeira, ícone de forte presença nas manifestações populares, é seu grito em favor da liberdade de expressão.

Jozias Benedicto The artist`s proposal for What Unites Us consists in two installations, giving sequence to his researches in the fusion of literature and visual arts.

The language is seen, in his artwork, as a powerful strength for building the cultural identity of a people, adding heterogeneities. Starting from the classical Olavo Bilac`s sonnet Portuguese Language, Jozias elaborated another poem, Last Flower (What unites us), using the same structure as Bilac`s. In his verses, the artists states his love to the words that he “looks restless for and which scent makes him submissive”. In the installation, men`s tissues with different colors are the stand for the post-modern vision of the poem, which includes hunger as an element that unites people. In Cama de Gato – string figure (What unites us), an audio installation, the viewer listens to both the poems while observing the drawings made by the string that unites both chairs. As in the popular game of manual ability, the resulting weave suggests this eternal multiple visions aesthetical interweaving of our language.

Jozias Benedicto A proposta apresentada pelo artista para a exposição Aquilo que nos une consiste em duas instalações, dando sequência às suas pesquisas de fusão entre literatura e artes visuais. A linguagem é vista, em sua obra, como uma poderosa força para a construção da identidade cultural de um povo, agregando heterogeneidades. Partindo do clássico soneto de Olavo Bilac Língua portuguesa, Jozias elaborou outro poema, Última flor (O que nos une), utilizando estrutura semelhante à de Bilac. Em seus versos o artista declara seu amor à palavra que “busca insone e cujo aroma o deixa submisso”. Na instalação, lenços masculinos de cores diversas são o suporte para a visão pós-moderna do poema que inclui a fome como um elemento de união dos povos. Em Cama de Gato (O que nos une), instalação sonora, o espectador pode ouvir os dois poemas enquanto observa o desenho formado pelo barbante que une as duas cadeiras. Como no jogo popular, de habilidade manual, a trama formada sugere esse eterno entrelaçar das múltiplas visões estéticas do nosso idioma.

Leonilson His artwork, mainly autobiographical, reveals the ambiguous and curious artist, as Leonilson used to define himself. His works are like letters he never sent, impregnated with anguish and worries. Some specific questions, like the need to fixate a memory and the duality of the moral and religious values, besides the allegory of illness, are recurrent. He left more than a hundred embroideries, cloth objects with drawings, seams and words that express the solitude and the difficulty in communicating that ran through his last years. For What unites us, we choose two artworks were embroidery turns into poetry and the intimate and personal themes surprise by their universality. Empty Man translates the emptiness feeling when felt abandoned; the line turns into a drawing instrument and the paints pleasure is replaced by the fabric`s sensuality. To sew by hand enables to make stiches, mistakes, cutting and beginning again. Leonilson transits into several languages and believes that the language should bend to an external logic in order to adequate itself to the artists needs.

Orthographic mistakes, the refusal to obey syntax and agreement rules are also the wills carried out frequently. The Library The mirror, confirms this way of transcending the linguistic territories. Books, mirrors, body parts, and other elements in these artworks, were developed until the end of his life.

Leonilson Sua obra, predominantemente autobiográfica, revela o artista ambíguo e curioso, como bem se definia Leonilson. Seus trabalhos são como cartas que nunca mandou; impregnados de angustia e preocupações. Algumas questões específicas, como a necessidade da fixação de uma memória e a ambiguidade dos valores morais e religiosos, além da alegoria da doença, são recorrentes. Deixou mais de cem bordados, objetos de pano com desenhos, costuras e palavras que expressam a solidão e a dificuldade de comunicação que perpassaram seus últimos anos. Para Aquilo que nos une foram selecionadas duas obras onde o bordado vira poesia e os temas íntimos e pessoais surpreendem pela universalidade. Empty Man traduz a sensação do vazio ao se sentir abandonado; a linha se converte em instrumento de desenho e o prazer das tintas é substituído pela sensualidade dos tecidos. Costurar à mão possibilita dar o ponto, errar, cortar e começar outra vez. Leonilson transita por diversos idiomas e acredita que a língua deva se dobrar a uma lógica externa para se adequar às necessidades do artista. Erros ortográficos, recusa em obedecer a regras de sintaxe e concordância são também vontades exercidas com frequência. O biblioteca O espelho confirma essa forma de transcender territórios linguísticos. Livros, espelhos, partes do corpo, entre outros elementos dessas obras, serão desenvolvidos até o final de sua vida.

Letícia Parente Letìcia Parente`s videographic work Trademark is one of the most overwhelming and disturbing of the Brazilian artistic video production from the 70s. For 10 minutes and 30 seconds, the artist embroiders, with a needle and a black yarn, her foot sole. The activity happens repeatedly, intimately, with slow movements. Even if what`s happening is kind of transgressive, the position she remains, with crossed legs, seems to be an invitation for meditating. The artist puts the yarn on the needle and embroider letters in the sole of her own foot; one by one the letters show up: “Made in Brasil” (with an “s”), with precision, acuity and authenticity, looking for statement and identity. The embroidered frase – which sometimes is known as the work’s title – gets printed on the foot the same way as the iron branding gets in the cattle`s leather. Using her own body as a stand for transmitting a thought, an ideal, is impregnating it with potentiality. Moreover, watching the whole process allow us to feel closer to the artist. What unites us is the perseverance, the unflagging work so that a truth expression keeps on being sensitive.

Letícia Parente O trabalho videográfico Marca Registrada, de Letícia Parente, é um dos mais contundentes e perturbadores da produção videoartística brasileira da década de 1970. Ao longo de 10 minutos e 30 segundos, a artista borda, com agulha e linha preta, a sola de seu pé. Esta atividade é repetitiva, íntima, de movimentos lentos. Ainda que o ato seja transgressor, o posicionamento da artista, de pernas cruzadas, parece ser um convite à meditação. A artista coloca a linha na agulha e borda letras na sola do próprio pé; uma a uma, as letras vão formando a legenda “Made in Brasil” (com “s”), com precisão, com sutileza e autenticidade, buscando afirmação e identidade. A frase bordada − que muitas vezes é tida como o título do trabalho − fica impressa na pele, assim como a marca do ferro em brasa fica registrada no couro do gado. Usar o próprio corpo como suporte para transmitir um pensamento, um ideal, é impregná-lo de potência, e assistir a esse processo possibilita a cumplicidade com o artista. Aquilo que nos une é a persistência, o trabalho incansável para que a expressão de uma verdade se mantenha sempre à flor da pele.

Marcos Chaves Virtual Reality, a wooden table covered with a creased linen tablecloth, is the brief and inspired way the artist uses to talk about moments and situations that are trivial but laden of significance. Although is not physically visible, there is a contemplative presence leading the scene. A table set up with a white linen tablecloth, stainless and with no sign of a meal brings the memories of the family reunions, the encounters, conversations and debates that doesn`t happen anymore. Almost unnoticed, in a corner of that table, two small parallel eminences are the witnesses of that void. Only with the white colors, it`s possible to assume the authors proposal of talking about the things that possibly interrupts relationships, modifying the daily routine.

Whit a giant synthesis capacity, Marcos Chaves inspired his artwork on the street life, on people`s life and in how it acts in their intimacy. He worries about the creation of new meanings for moments that otherwise would be forgotten. Often with humor and irony, he uses the word as the main element to connect what`s popular to what`s erudite in his artwork.

Marcos Chaves Realidade Virtual, uma mesa de madeira coberta por uma toalha de linho vincada, é a forma concisa e inspirada do artista para falar de situações e momentos corriqueiros, mas carregados de significados. Embora não visível fisicamente, existe uma presença contemplativa, protagonizando a cena.

Uma mesa posta com toalha de linho branco, sem manchas e sem vestígios da refeição traz a memória de reuniões familiares, de encontros, conversas e discussões que não acontecem mais. Quase despercebidos, num canto da mesa, dois pequenos relevos paralelos são o testemunho desse vazio.

Apenas no branco insinua-se da proposta do autor de falar de coisas que possivelmente interrompem relações, modificam o cotidiano. Com uma enorme capacidade de síntese, Marcos Chaves tem sua obra inspirada na rua, na vida das pessoas e em como isso atua no seu íntimo. Preocupa-se com a criação de novos significados para momentos que seriam de outro modo esquecidos. Muitas vezes com ironia e humor, usa a palavra como elemento fundamental para ligar o popular e o erudito em sua obra.

Nazareno The artist`s production process is a part of a more accurate vision to the everyday. In his artworks there are addressed aspects mainly concerning to the memories and the frailty of the contemporary being. It doesn`t gives us the prompt answers and, exactly for that reason, disquiets the viewer. Each one will be touched by the “sparkle” and will have each interest awaken due to its own repertoire. The writing is also an important thing to understand Nazareno`s work, that look for another ways of conducting the looks and interpretations. Nothing is random in his artwork, everything is warranted and takes a well-marked place. In Happiness, a crochet sculpture, the black background gives a mourning idea, in opposition to the written word meaning. Happiness as a construction that can be slighted with simply pulling the threads; the frailty of the certainties that collapses in front of us, as sewed points with no knots. Many are the questions that this artwork brings to the viewer, searching through archives and waking up memories.

The artist makes us think about the value in using less conventional formats, with materials and techniques that complement the artwork`s proposal.

Nazareno O processo de produção do artista parte de uma visão acurada do cotidiano.

Em suas obras são abordados aspectos relativos principalmente à memória e à fragilidade do ser contemporâneo. Não entrega respostas prontas e, justamente por esse motivo, provoca inquietação no espectador. Cada um será atingido pela “faísca” e terá seu interesse despertado de acordo com seu próprio repertório. A escrita é também importante questão para entender o trabalho de Nazareno, que busca outras formas de conduzir os olhares e interpretações. Nada em sua obra é aleatório, tudo se justifica e ocupa um lugar definido. Em Felicidade, escultura em crochê, o fundo preto suscita a ideia de luto, em contraposição ao sentido da palavra escrita. A felicidade como construção que pode ser desfeita com um simples puxar de linhas; a fragilidade das certezas que desmoronam diante de nós, como pontos dados sem nó. Várias são as questões que a obra traz para o espectador, remexendo acervos e despertando memórias. O artista faz pensar sobre a importância do uso de formatos menos convencionais, de materiais e técnicas que complementam a proposta da obra.

Nazareth Pacheco Há, nos trabalhos da artista, uma perturbante relação arte/vida. O feminino e seu universo são questões que envolvem a maioria de seus trabalhos, assim como aquilo que causa dor, cortes e perfurações. Tudo que está relacionado ao corpo da mulher é seu objeto de pesquisa. Da pele, que separa e protege o interior, às intervenções e procedimentos nos órgãos internos. A obra apresentada em Aquilo que nos une atrai o espectador pela beleza e brilho, protegida como uma joia em seu estojo. Nazareth tece objetos que apenas ela pode tocar, e nesse processo sente toda a dor na própria pele. Para seduzir, escolhe cristais e peças brilhantes que possam, por um curto espaço de tempo, esconder as lâminas afiadas. O corpo, presente na ausência, nunca estará preparado para usar tal veste, nunca poderá ser alcançado por entre os objetos cortantes. O estranho binômio beleza e dor traz a questão do feminino, da tirania da moda que sacrifica o corpo e o submete a torturas, levando a consequências inconcebíveis.

Nazareth Pacheco There is, in the artist works, a disturbing art/life relationship. The feminine and its universe are questions that involve most of her artworks, so as what causes pain, cuts and perforation. Everything related to a woman`s body is a research object for her. From the skin, that separates and protects what`s inside, to the interventions and procedures in the internal organs. The artwork exhibited in What unites us attracts the viewer with brightness and beauty, protected as a jewelry in its case. Nazareth weaves objects that can only be touched by her and, in this process, feels all the pain in her own skin.

In order to seduce she chooses crystals and bright elements that can, for a short period of time, hide sharp blades. The body, present in the absence, will never be prepared for using this kind of vest, and will never be reached between the sharp objects. The strange beauty and pain binomial brings out the feminine issues, the fashion tyranny that sacrifices the body and tortures it, leading to inconceivable consequences.

Renato Bezerra de Mello A cor vermelha possui significados diversos, que se refletem nesta obra, realizada com um ponto de bordado conhecido como “nozinho francês” sobre parte de veste litúrgica sacerdotal. Na relação da cor com o paramento religioso, Vermelho parece evocar a conflituosa relação entre poder e religião, que continua a nos atingir nos dias de hoje. Apesar da delicadeza do bordado, que se dá a partir de várias voltas da linha em torno da agulha antes de perpassar o tecido, esta obra faz pensar em manchas de sangue ou em territórios demarcados. Sobre o corpo alvo da peça de tecido, uma nódoa, uma certa ideia de violência, sofrida ou imposta. Em Passagem ilegível, um díptico, Renato transcreve diversas vezes sobre uma mesma folha de papel dois textos de Marguerite Yourcenar sobre a morte de sua companheira. Os relatos, ambos emocionantes, quando sobrepostos se tornam ilegíveis. Para o artista, a ideia de impossibilitar a leitura do texto vem da dúvida da escritora em tornar pública a sua dor. Novamente o vermelho aparece remetendo ao sofrimento e à violência da morte.

Renato Bezerra de Mello The color red has different meanings that reflects in this artwork, made with a type of embroidery known as the “French knot” in part of a sacerdotal cassock. In the relation of the color and the religious parameter, Red seems to evoke the power/religion conflictual relationship that keeps affecting us nowadays. Though to the embroidery delicacy, which comes from the lot of turns that the yarn does into the needle before trespassing the fabric, this artwork evokes to blood stains or demarcated territories. On the niveous body of the fabric, a tarnish, a certain idea of violence, suffered or imposed.

In Unreadable Passage, a diptych, Renato transcribes many times in a same paper sheet two Marguerite Yourcenar texts about the death of her life mate. The narratives, both very emotional, when superposed become unreadable. For the artist, the idea of turning the text impossible to read comes from the writer`s doubt of turning her pain public. Again, the red color appears referring to the suffering and violence of death.

Rodrigo Mogiz In Imaginary Maps II, a series of eight artworks based in Guimarães Rosa`s book: The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, Rodrigo Mogiz proceed the works he began in 2009. The initial idea was to embroider imaginary maps bringing not only geographical references, but also Backlands signs, figures and fragments. In the artworks exhibited in What unites us, Mogiz uses embroidery to lead the narrative, hiding figures in the background, taking advantage of the interlining transparency and adding small high colored objects to the yarns and paintings. Nothing is written in only one place, nothing dialogues whit reality, but everything floats in a diaphanous, seductress atmosphere. If the lines are thin and delicate, the topics are strong and provocative. In each embroidery we can see the fear, the struggle, the doubts and the love that are present in Rosa`s novel. The literary work debates the crossing of life with all its conflicts and diabolic mazes. Mogiz` artworks highlights the contemporary look to actions and omissions of a reckless world.

Rodrigo Mogiz Em Mapas imaginários II, série de oito obras baseadas no livro de Guimarães Rosa, Grande Sertão: Veredas, Rodrigo Mogiz dá prosseguimento aos trabalhos iniciados em 2009. A ideia inicial foi bordar mapas imaginários trazendo referencias não apenas geográficas, mas também signos, figuras e fragmentos do Sertão. Nas obras apresentadas em Aquilo que nos une, Mogiz usa o bordado para conduzir a narrativa, escondendo figuras num segundo plano, aproveitando-se da transparência das entretelas e adicionando pequenos objetos de colorido intenso às linhas e pinturas. Nada se inscreve num único cenário, nada dialoga com o real, mas tudo paira numa atmosfera diáfana, sedutora. Se as linhas são delicadas e finas os temas são fortes e provocadores. Em cada ponto do bordado estão presentes os medos, lutas, dúvidas e amores que Rosa traz em seu romance. A obra literária discute a travessia da vida com todos os seus conflitos e labirintos diabólicos. A obra de Mogiz destaca o olhar contemporâneo para as ações e omissões de um mundo indiferente.

Rosana Palazyan A artista apresenta dois trabalhos na exposição Aquilo que nos une, ambos representando a união de corpos que se transformam num só. Em MÃEFILHO, a dor e o amor unem num só corpo mãe e filho, como no título da obra. A agulha usada para bordar as figuras assume o mesmo papel do projétil que perfurou o corpo da filho e fez sangrar também o coração da mãe. A delicadeza do bordado não abafa o grito compartilhado por todos que sofrem com a violência, não só no Brasil, mas no mundo inteiro. Quantas mães ainda vão ver seus filhos arrancados de seus braços? Quantas terão voz para transformar as lágrimas em obras que possibilitem a reflexão sobre dor e luto? Rosana borda suas memórias, usando materiais recolhidos nos guardados da família. Num lenço amarelecido, costurado pela avó armênia, a artista escreve sua história unindo-a à de outras mulheres, resgatando gerações, para que nada seja esquecido. Em Commelina erecta homo, da série Minha coleção de sementes Daninhas, Rosana Palazyan borda com linha de algodão a imagem de uma planta considerada daninha e a figura humana com fios de cabelo. Unidos, plantas e seres humanos, numa mesma espécie são avaliados como daninhos, isto é, são prejudiciais, causam danos. A artista abre um campo bastante extenso para a reflexão sobre exclusão em todas as suas formas e possíveis correlações entre pessoas e plantas daninhas.

Rosana Palazyan The artist presents two works in What unites us exhibition, both of them representing the union that turns bodies into a single one. In MOTHERSON, pain and love unites in a single body both mother and son, as in the work`s name. The needle used for embroidering the figures takes the same role of the bullet that pierced the son`s body and also bled the mother`s heart. The delicacy in the embroidery can`t suffocate the scream shared by everyone that suffers violence, not only in Brazil, but also in the whole world. How many mothers are still going to see her children uprooted form their arms? In a yellowed tissue, sewn by her Armenian grandmother, the artist writes her story unifying it with all the women`s, rescuing generations so it is not forgotten. In Commelina erecta homo, from the series My Weed Seeds Collection, Rosana Palazyan embroideries with cotton yarn the image of a harmful plant and the human figure with hairs. United, plants and human beings, in a same species are considered harmful, that means, are prejudicial, causes damages. The artist opens up a very extensive field to reflect about exclusion in all its forms and possible correlations between people and weed plants.

Sonia Gomes The artist is interested in the differences, in life.

She turns the memoires into part of her artwork, which passes between what`s erudite and what`s popular. She sees in the leftovers the material to create, to bring to life, as her midwife grandmother. In her hands, art emerges from patchwork, from what was stored, photos, and materials that she gathers with creativity. What is in the unconscious comes out to provide so many saved affections. Sonia makes art to express herself, telling the world the great learning that comes from Brazilian tradition.

Her works talk about safety places, of reconstruction and survival; they also talk about the redefinition and prettiness of giving new meanings to disposed fragments that are still alive. The artwork exhibited in What unites us belongs to the series A place for a body and refers to a nest, to a mother`s womb, to places for caring and building life. As a bird, that collects every kind of material to make its child cradle, Sonia Gomes need to fill her space for leaving and working. Her nest, soft and warm, is the place to be born once again.

Sonia Gomes A artista interessa-se pelas diferenças, pela vida. Faz das memórias parte de sua obra que transita entre o erudito e o popular. Não descarta, aproveita. Enxerga nas sobras o material para criar, para trazer à luz, como fazia sua avó parteira. Em suas mãos a arte vai surgindo de retalhos de tecido, de guardados, fotos e materiais que reúne com criatividade. O que está no inconsciente aflora para dar vazão a tantos afetos guardados. Sonia faz arte para se expressar, comunicando ao mundo o forte aprendizado da tradição brasileira. Seus trabalhos falam de lugares de proteção, de reconstrução e de sobrevivência; dizem também de resignificação e da beleza de conferir novos sentidos a fragmentos descartados, porém ainda vivos. A obra apresentada em Aquilo que nos une pertence à série Lugar para um corpo e remete a ninho, ao útero materno, lugares de cuidado e construção de vida. Como pássaro, que recolhe todo tipo de material para confeccionar o berço de seus filhos, Sonia Gomes precisa encher seu espaço para viver e trabalhar. Seu ninho, quente e macio, é lugar para nascer mais uma vez.

Tunga Cotton yarns and ropes, electrical wires, braided hair, webs and natural fibers has always been recurrent at Tunga`s artwork. He is an sculptor that uses narrative the same way that he weaves formal elements. The artist himself describe his artwork as “a set of works where one always leads to another”. As an architect with strong interest in literature, philosophy and archeology, he reveals in his artwork ramifications and effects with multiple meanings. The viewer is taken through a universe where reality and imagination share the same space. In the work presented for What unites us, thin golden yarns form figurative images, where the strength of drawings contrasts with the delicacy of some silk stands, lending shine and light to a vigorous theme. The bodies` contour, united by a trace that defines at the same time two persons, mixes skins and hairs in the indetermination of the borders. The well explored images of the tacape (a hist club) and the braids reappears in this author artwork whom “seeks to learn with what he don`t know”.

Tunga Fios de algodão e cordas, fios elétricos, fios de cabelo trançados, redes e fibras naturais sempre foram recorrentes na obra de Tunga, um escultor que usa a narrativa da mesma forma que tece elementos formais. O próprio artista descreve sua obra como “um conjunto de trabalhos onde um sempre leva a outros”. Arquiteto por formação, com forte interesse pela literatura, filosofia e arqueologia, revela em sua obra ramificações e efeitos com múltiplos significados. O espectador é levado a adentrar um universo onde o real e o imaginário compartilham o mesmo espaço. Na obra apresentada em Aquilo que nos une finíssimas linhas douradas formam imagens figurativas, onde a força do desenho contrasta com a delicadeza do suporte em seda, emprestando brilho e luz ao tema vigoroso. O contorno dos corpos unidos por um traço que define ao mesmo tempo duas pessoas mistura peles e pelos na indeterminação de fronteiras. Reaparecem as imagens bastante exploradas do tacape e de cabelos, bem representativas da obra desse autor que “procura aprender com o que não sabe”.

Ursula Tautz With the artwork We are all trying to feel at home, Ursula Tautz brings the poetry of belonging, of looking for the birthplace and of the sought heaven.

Five wooden swings, each one with a town drawn in holes on its surface, embroidered with golden threads. The incomplete drawings suggests paths to be made, stories to be tell looking for an end.

In everything we can find life tracks, places she has been, lived and inherited memories. From Poland to Brazil, the road takes to many affective towns that Ursula now gingerly fixates, however, without showing frailty. Different from benches, swings are unstable and remains to flights; however, the ones she made are sewn together.

Belonging, being at home, being able to tell its story, anchored in its own land are longings of the human being that Ursula translates in her artworks.

Ursula Tautz Com a obra Estamos todos tentando nos sentir em casa, Ursula Tautz traz a poética do pertencer, da busca do lugar de origem e do almejado paraíso. Cinco balanços de madeira, cada um com uma cidade desenhada em furos na sua superfície, são bordados com fios dourados. Os desenhos, incompletos, sugerem caminhos por fazer ainda, histórias a serem contadas em busca de um final. Em tudo encontramos uma trajetória de vida, locais por onde a artista passou, viveu ou de onde herdou lembranças. Da Polônia para o Brasil, a estrada leva a várias cidades afetivas que agora Ursula fixa com delicadeza; sem, entretanto, demonstrar fragilidade. Diferentes dos bancos, balanços são instáveis e sugerem voos; os da artista, entretanto, estão costurados entre si. Pertencer, estar em casa, poder contar a sua história ancorado num terreno só seu são anseios do ser humano que Ursula traduz em sua obra.

Vera Bernardes Unraveling the fabric to resume a new weave, in the same direction, in the original layout. Weaving a new reality from another one in which they pulled out essential parts. These are some of the artist`s proposals when creating the Xs series, to which belongs number 7 work, exhibited in What unites us. Vera works with the unknown`s metaphor, disaggregating mysteries, reconstructing a new order for better understanding what happens around. If the embroidered lines are straight, as a ruled notebook paper, its origins are a tangle of threads, a nest in which an “X” was painted. What mysteries does the nest hides?

What threads/creatures will come out to follow new roads? In this artwork, only the raw linen and the bright red disposed by chance. The stained yarns go atavistic toward the edges without deflection, not surpassing any obstacle.

Vera Bernardes Desfazer o tecido para recomeçar uma nova trama, no mesmo sentido, na mesma disposição original. Tecer uma nova realidade a partir de outra da qual foram arrancadas partes essenciais. São essas algumas das propostas da artista ao criar a série Xis, à qual pertence a obra de número 7, exposta em Aquilo que nos une. Vera trabalha com metáforas do desconhecido, buscando esmiuçar mistérios, reconstruir uma nova ordem para entender melhor o que acontece no entorno. Se as linhas bordadas são retas, como pautas de caderno, suas origens são um emaranhado de fios, um ninho sobre o qual foi pintado um “X”. Que mistérios escondem os ninhos? Que fios/seres sairão de lá para seguir outras estradas? Na obra, apenas o linho cru e o vermelho vivo disposto ao acaso. As linhas manchadas vão em direção às bordas do pano sem desvios, sem ultrapassar qualquer obstáculo, atávicas.

Waltercio Caldas A obra de Waltercio não se oferece imediatamente ao espectador. Trará sempre uma nova expectativa de desconhecido e é preciso saber ver através, nos diversos elementos e propostas. Nosso olhar é devolvido pela obra, que assim permite ao pensamento passear pelas linhas, compreender os encontros, seguir as curvas. A diversidade de suportes, materiais e temáticas extrapola rótulos que possam ser aplicados a sua obra, e a relação entre eles é de suma importância para sua poética; cada um tem uma especificidade, uma dinâmica e oferece uma resposta plástica. Nas duas obras selecionadas para Aquilo que nos une, o rigor formal, sempre presente em seus trabalhos, reafirma a importância do processo de demarcação de diferentes espaços. Sua obra situa-se nos limites do vazio, no que está entre linhas e na possibilidade de ampliar a linguagem, que para o artista é arte.

Constrói, com a precisão do aço e a delicadeza das linhas, objetos que fluem diante do espectador sem imposições ou formalismos; cada um deve usar seu acervo mental para melhor contemplá-los. A limpidez das formas instiga e tranquiliza, mas também questiona e leva o olhar para além da própria obra.

Waltercio Caldas Waltercio Caldas` artwork doesn`t show up immediately to the viewer. It will always bring a new expectation of the unknown and it`s required to know how to look through, with the several elements and proposals. The artwork develops our look, allowing the thoughts to stroll around the lines, realizing the encounters, following the curves. The diversity of stands, materials and themes extrapolates labels that could be applied to his artwork, and the relation between them is very important to his poetic; each one has a specificity, a dynamic and offers a plastic response. In the two artworks selected for What unites us, the formal rigor, always a presence in his works, reaffirms the importance in the demarcating process for different spaces. His artwork is located on the outskirts of emptiness, on what is between the lines and in the possibility of expanding the language, which for him, means art. He constructs, with the precision of the steel and the tenderness of the lines, objects that flow in front of the viewer, without impositions or formalisms, each one should use its mental archive to better contemplate them. The clarity of forms instigates and tranquilizes, but also questions ant takes the look beyond the artwork itself.
