GILES ANDERSON How I would enhance the autumn season across Europe As the summer draws to an end, thoughts start to turn towards the European championship meetings this September and October. Kicking off with the Baden-Baden meeting in September, the Irish Championship fixture at Leopardstown, the Arc weekend at Longchamp and then the revamped new kid on the block – the British Champions Day at Ascot – Europeans are going to be set for an autumn to savour.

Some great meetings but it’s clear to see that the shifting of the British Champions Day has proved uncomfortable for some within the British scene but also for those within the French industry. In my mind, these changes present European racing with a major opportunity. Whilst individual nations’ pride will preclude us from having an overall European Champions Day, what we should be aiming for is a distinct European Racing Championship that draws together the key pattern races on the big autumn days over a defined two-month period with a major international race meeting held every other weekend.

Personally, I feel that the introduction of the Champion Series concept in Britain this summer has helped increase exposure within the wider media for the sport, and such investment should be harnessed. But what if a European Racing Tour concept was to be rolled out over the key months of September and October across Europe? The benefits to racing are simple. To connect with a wider multi nation audience; to raise the profile of racing across Europe; to package together media and betting rights to provide a return to racing. What will it take? For starters, racing needs to get the foundations set and it has got to involve the European Pattern Race Committee taking a firm lead as it will give them the chance to define once and for all the autumn pattern across Europe. Trainers need to be reassured that with some joined-up thinking, their objectives for horses can be fulfilled and the pattern system enhances the structure of races it was set up to achieve. In addition to this, European Pattern races have got to have their own set of unilateral rules - so for example, if a horse runs in Germany, the types of permitted racing plates will be the same as if the race were to run in Ireland. Or that if a trainer wants to multi-enter a horse he’s not going to get penalised for switching from one race to another and that jockeys know exactly that what it perceived as interference is the same from country to country.

For the follower of racing they’ll have a defined set of the normal points based championships to follow (leading jockey / trainer / horse / sire etc) but it won’t take much to roll out a revenue model such as an worldwide player participant internet based “virtual stable” championship with cash prizes and ticket offers for each leg and overall tour. As this would be a registration event. the industry will have suddenly captured its own user data to build the concept further.

So, plenty to think about for the future, but before then, wherever your racing takes you this autumn, good luck! n

rainers and veterinarians will also have to adapt their methods to work within the new rules. In my opinion, medication equates to facility in racing; however often I hear the explanation that drugs are used to help horses, I cannot agree, except of course in certain cases for horses which are unwell. But we European trainers have been guilty of hypocrisy in the past, as we are happy to send a horse which bleeds to race in America on Lasix.

We must not forget that training conditions are more difficult in America, and racing on dirt leads to damage to horses’ lungs. The problem is that medication hides any amount of damage and in my belief certainly means that some stallions enter the breeding ranks which should not do so.

I am pleased that the Breeders’ Cup are leading the way on this issue. They will undoubtedly be criticised but the move is a step in the right direction for us all to compete on equal terms towards racing horses free from all medication.

This autumn sees the new Champions Day at Ascot on 15th October and the Future Champions Day for juveniles at Newmarket on 8th October. We must move with the times and I hope that this attempt to increase racing’s appeal is a success. However, personally I am fond of the ten furlong straight at Newmarket for the Champions Stakes and find it rather a shame that the race has been moved to Ascot. It

I welcome the recent announcement that Lasix will be banned in Graded races for juveniles in America in 2012, and in two-year-old contests at next year’s Breeders’ Cup. I am in favour of prohibiting all medication, but realise that this is very difficult to accomplish in the USA, where each state operates as a separate entity.

“I am most concerned about the suppression of 80 race days in Britain next year. This works out at the equivalent of around 4,800 runners and will make life even more difficult for British trainers” is also difficult to see how the modifications to the two-year-old programme will affect juveniles’ careers. Any changes in race dates must have a knock-on effect. The Champions Day meeting should not affect the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, which is undoubtedly now regarded as the world championship race, but may have some effect upon the supporting races or on the Breeders’ Cup meeting.

I am most concerned about the suppression of 80 race days in Britain next year. This works out at the equivalent of around 4,800 runners and will make life even more difficult for British trainers. It is terrible that the country is in such trouble as England is the traditional home of racing, and the English have horses

in their genes! We must all keep fighting together to turn these fortunes around.

I have been invited by the Latin American Racing Channel, the commercial managers of South American racing, to represent the ETF at a conference in Uruguay in November. It will be interesting to find out more about racing on this continent and I believe that it is an important step forward that the ETF should be represented at this type of event. Hopefully this will help pave the way for our federation to gain recognition from international ruling bodies and lead to us having a voice at the highest level.

This summer French racing has celebrated the centenary of the Wertheimer Family’s racing and breeding operation, and the Aga Khan Studs reached the same milestone last year. It is wonderful to have such long-standing supporters of our sport as they act as a locomotive for the industry. Breeding is the lifeblood of racing and without breeders there would be no racing. At whatever level, it is the utmost reward to see a horse you have bred yourself win a race. We are now approaching the sales season and I hope that the results will be positive for breeders and for buyers investing in hopes for the future.

We have seen some magnificent racing this summer, and I would like to congratulate the trainers, owners, breeders and staff of all winners. I wish you all the best of luck for the end of the flat season and the beginning of the jumps! n

Rebecka Blenntoft trained in human manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) at the Vodder Schule in Austria and is qualified to treat lymphatic disease and administer combined decongestive therapy.

She is a member of the British Lymphology Society and MLD UK, where she acts as their editorial assistant for the quarterly journal. Rebecka is based in Oxfordshire and treats both humans and horses involved in a variety of disciplines.

Birger Christensen, 59, a former journalist and teacher in Norway, became interested in racing in 1964 and has since been a keen racegoer. He contributes articles to the racecard at Øvrevoll.

Dr Catherine Dunnett BSc, PhD, R.Nutr. is an independent nutritionist registered with the British Nutrition Society. She has a background in equine research, in the field of nutrition and exercise physiology, with many years spent at The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. Prior to setting up her own consultancy business, she worked in the equine feed industry on product development and technical marketing.

Katherine Ford was brought up in a hunting and point-topointing environment on a farm in North Yorkshire. Following a year working in a racing yard in Middleham, she studied Modern Languages at Sheffield University, with a semester studying French in Pau. After University, Katherine completed the BHB Graduate Programme in 2000, and in 2001 started work for the International Racing Bureau’s Paris office. Three years later she moved to Equidia, France’s horseracing television channel, for which she has had the opportunity to travel to some of the world’s major racetracks, including those of Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan, several Breeders’ Cups, Cheltenham and Pardubice.

Katherine currently works part-time for Equidia and as a freelance journalist and translator.

Dr. Christine King is an Australian equine veterinarian now living and practicing near Seattle, WA. She has a Master’s degree in equine exercise physiology from the University of Sydney. Her diverse interests include rehabilitation, nutrition, and herbal medicine.

Dr. Stacey Oke is a licensed veterinarian and freelance medical writer and editor. In addition to writing for various horse publications, she also contributes to scientific journals, is an editor of an internationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journal, creates continuing education materials for both human and veterinary medicine, and conducts biomedical research studies.

Sid Fernando (@sidfernando) is president of eMatings LLC and Werk Thoroughbred Consultants, Inc. He is the former bloodstock editor of Daily Racing Form and also blogs about racing and breeding.

rainer Roger Charlton enjoyed a memorable 46 days with the three-yearold Invincible Sprit gelding Camberley Two. Going into the starting stalls for the Bet on Live Tennis at totesport.com Handicap at Brighton on 21st June, Camberley Two was rated 53, having finished ninth, fifteenth, eighth, and most recently third on his previous starts. Off that third-place effort (which was a dead heat), he started 11/10 favourite, and Richard Kingscote duly guided him to a four-length victory.

Camberley Two registered his second win, in an apprentice race at Salisbury under Charles Bishop. And it was only two days later, on 28th June, that the gelding reappeared on the racecourse, ridden this time by Kieran O’Neill.

Despite losing the lead a furlong out, the pair regained control and the Sultan Ahmad Shahowned grey became a three-time winner in the span of seven days, for the second time at Brighton.

Camberley Two had a nearly month-long break from the races, coming back at Yarmouth on 25th July. O’Neill had the mount again and they recorded an easier victory than before, passing the post threeand-a-quarter lengths ahead of the secondplaced horse.

The next stop on the Camberley Two express was at Pontefract on the 3rd of August.

Partnered by O’Neill once more, he scored a cosy three-length win.

At Haydock on 5th August, Bishop was reunited with Camberley Two. They won by half a length. It was Camberley Two’s sixth win – 20% of his trainer’s win total this season – on the trot. The gelding, an 82,000 guineas

purchase by C. Gordon-Watson Bloodstock at Tattersalls October, has earned himself a respite until autumn.

A former amateur rider, 61-year-old Charlton has conditioned two Classic winners – Quest for Fame (1990 Ever Ready Epsom Derby) and Sanglamore (1990 Prix du Jockey Club Lancacia) – and tasted further big-race success with Group 1 winners Avonbridge, Patavellian, Tamarisk, and Tante Rose. He was installed as trainer at Beckhampton House in Marlborough in 1990, following the retirement of Jeremy Tree, to whom he had been assistant since 1978.

This quarter, Charlton is also represented by Group 3 Chipchase winner Genki, while Listed winner Bated Breath placed in the Group 1 Darley July Cup and Al Kazeen was second in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur.

Charlton is on the cutting-edge of the game, maintaining a top-class website that is frequently updated with insightful comments and photos of his horses. He also engages regularly on Twitter, where he has over 5,700 followers, as @rogercharlton, where he pointed out that Camberley Two’s feat had

bested his personal record of five consecutive wins, which Kind (the dam of Frankel) provided him over a four-month period in 2004.

Camberley Two has, not surprisingly, been mentioned quite a bit on Twitter. Two days after his fourth win, his trainer tweeted: “Horse Camberley Two beat at Yarmouth on Monday won the first at Sandown tonight, in easy fashion. Maybe he is improving more than I thought.”

The handicapper seems to agree. On a website entry dated 9th August, Charlton wrote, “Camberley Two has been raised 7lbs to a rating of 85 having run off 79 when he won his last race at Haydock. Not surprisingly, the handicapper is making quite sure that he does not win again having had his fair share!”

But while Camberley Two was slow to come to hand, his future looks to be a bright one.

His dam, by Linamix, is an own sister to Diamond Mix, a Group 2 winner over 11 furlongs, and 12-furlong, Group 3 filly Diasilixa, so there may yet be some quality racing to come over 10-12 furlongs from the Beckhampton gelding next year. n

Niels Petersen The Danish dynamo Niels Petersen was born in Denmark but has lived in Norway for more than ten years. And this season, he is the clear favourite to become champion trainer at Øvrevoll, the only racecourse in Norway.

’M 40 years old,” Petersen says.

“Things have gone very fast the last couple of years. 2011 has so far been a fantastic racing year for me. But it is in August and September we have the most valuable races. It is a big goal for me to be champion for the first time, but I don’t want to take anything in advance. If I’m still ahead in October I think the chance will be good. Until then we have to work hard and keep the horses fit and ready for racing.”

He grew up close to Klampenborg, the main racecourse in Denmark. Some of his best friends were Mark Larsen, Jacob Johansen, Lennart Hammer, Nicholas Cordrey and Neil Grant, who became some of the best jockeys in Danish racing history. Petersen tried too, but found out early that he should be a trainer, not a jockey.

“My sister Marianne was riding out for Ole Larsen, Mark Larsen’s father. It was therefore

natural for me to work for Ole. I must say I have learned almost everything I can about horses from Ole, so I really have to say thanks to him.”

After school, Petersen spent one year in the military, and after he served his time he went back to the horses. First he went to Germany, where he worked a year for the Norwegian trainer Trond Hansen in Baden Baden.

But for the last 14 years, Petersen has lived in Norway.

He says, “I got in contact with Rune Haugen, twice champion trainer in Norway. It was a nice year at a place called Tanum, not very far from the racecourse. I rode a few Flat races and some National Hunt races but I never managed to pass the winning post first. In 1998, I took out a trainer’s licence and things picked up slowly but already the first year I won Norsk Rikstoto Grand Prix with a Norwegian-bred colt named Polar Shadow, and the same horse went on to

finish third in the Norwegian Derby. It was a good start and looking back on the beginning, I feel that things have gone very fast. The last two years there especially have been a period of much success.”

Petersen moved his horses to a yard at the racecourse in 2005, and has since expanded to the figure of 40 horses he currently has in training. The same year he trained his first Group winner, when You Never Know, a Swedish-bred horse by Diaghlyphard (USA), won the Group 3 Polar Cup at Øvrevoll. He also had Salt Track, who his main owner Mrs Elisif Sommershield had bought from Argentina. Salt Track won a couple of good races in Norway, including the Listed Polar Mile Cup. Petersen was dreaming of the possibility of having a runner in Dubai during the International Racing Carnival and Salt Track’s owner gave him that opportunity.

Second in the race was Gloria de Campeao, the horse that later became the winner of Dubai World Cup.” Since then, Petersen has been in Dubai every winter. Last year Timely Jazz was second in a Listed race. Sadly the horse broke a leg in the UAE Derby and had to be put down, which was a big loss for Petersen and owner Wibecke Nagell-Erichsen.

good as expected, but there are many other aspects.

“I feel that we get much back. In Norway it can be minus 20 degrees Celcius in January and February. In Dubai it’s about 30 degrees plus.

Both people and horses need sun and warm days. In addition to that we get in contact with many people. We talk to jockeys and trainers, get input and energy. In football terms we go from the Norwegian League to Premier League or La Liga. And as a bonus, the horses usually run well when they return to Scandinavia after a few months in Dubai. Salt Track won the Pramms Memorial (L.) in Sweden (the most valuable race on all weather track in Scandinavia) only a month and half after returning from Dubai.

Last year Petersen brought a four-year-old horse named Bank of Burden (USA) for a spell in Dubai. As a three-year-old, he had finished

PROFILE fourth in the Norwegian Derby and later won the Norwegian St Leger. Coming back from Dubai he has shown tremendous form and won the Group 3 Walter Nilsen Minnelop and the Valley Chapel Memorial (L). In his last start he was second in the Scandinavian Open Championship (Gr3) in Copenhagen. Petersen also brought other horses to Dubai last winter – Cat Junior and the three-year-old Manchester (Fr). The latter is one of the favourites ahead of the Norwegian Derby run in late August (after this magazine’s publication date).

No other trainer in Scandinavia travels as much as Petersen does. You will often see his name on the racecard at the three Swedish tracks: Täby in Stockholm, Jägersro in Malmø and at Gothenburg Racecourse, and of course he visits his old home course of Klampenborg in Denmark several times each year. It is about 300 kilometres to Gothenburg, and 600 kilometres to the other courses.

“At Øvrevoll we usually have race meetings once a week from April to December. To find the best of races for all the horses, you simply have to travel. The owners want to win as many races as possible, so I spend a lot of time studying the condition book from the different tracks to see where to run my horses. Last week I was in Stockholm winning two major races and on the Swedish Derby day in middle of August, I will most likely run between six or eight horses. And when I get the chance, I like to go to Denmark and visit many of my good old friends and family,” he says.

Petersen feels that in Scandinavia, too many of the trainers are too content with the way things are. “You must be hungry, want to do it better than you did last year. If things go well, it’s so easy to be happy. I have always thought that you must improve what you are doing. I have always had ambitions, and now I feel that the results are coming. But then again I must still be hungry and try to do an even better job in the future. I have always admired Wido Neuroth, Scandinavian champion the last 12 years and 13-time champion in Norway. He has worked thoroughly since he came to Norway in the early sixties. This year he has been unlucky with many seriously injured horses, but I feel sure that he will come back on top level.

To have success as a trainer, it is important to have the right people around you, which Petersen does. “I have a fantastic bunch of people who are working in the yard. Among all the wonderful people I have to mention my sister Marianne. She has been my right hand as long as I can remember, and I can’t say how glad I am to have her. Marianne does a very important job, but I could say nice things about many others. Having more than 40 horses it’s easy to understand there is much to do from early morning to the late evening.

“I also feel very lucky to be married to Camilla. She used to be a very good rider herself, having won the Norwe gian Championship twice in showjumping for ponies. Therefore, she knows what it takes to

I love the contact with the horses, it gives me a lot, and I feel I am lucky to have a job like this” train horses, what is needed to be a trainer. All the travelling takes time, and then I have to be away from her and our two children. Julie (6) is starting at school this autumn, while Fredrik (2) was named after the top jockey Fredrik Johansson. Julie is one of the biggest fans of Fredrik, and she decided the name of her little brother when he was born. ‘His name is going to be Fredrik,’ Julie said, and so it was.”

Petersen is a very social person. He likes that the owners come to the stable, and it seems that the owners like to come to Petersen.

“I love to talk about horses and racing.

Sometimes I can sit for hours, and there is no other subject that has such a common interest,” he says. “We tell stories from ‘the good old days’ (good old days are not that very old in racing), talk about which distance is best for each horse, grass or dirt track (Øvrevoll has both), but in the spring and late autumn it is only dirt track racing due to frost and snow. We make plans together for the future. I feel that my owners are happy with this part of the ownership; at least, I am happy for having so many fine owners.

What does he look for in a horse he’s thinking of buying? “Compared to others, I feel I do not care very much about the breeding and the catalogue. I have to see the horse with my own eyes. The horse must be correctly

built, and I have to see life in the eyes.”

Petersen lives about ten miles from Øvrevoll and is at the stable about six o’clock every morning. They work until one o’clock, take a break and are back from four to six in the afternoon. To be a trainer is more of a lifestyle than having an ordinary job, but he and his team seem to like it.

“I had an idea once of being a journalist, but I think I made the right decision to end up with racing. I love the contact with the horses, it gives me a lot, and I feel I am lucky to have a job like this.”

As do other trainers, Petersen set himself the goal of winning a Derby. The other goal was being champion trainer at Øvrevoll, but let’s first look at the Derby dream: “In 2010 I had two really good three-year-old horses. Their name were Bank of Burden and Go Go Gadget (Ger). From early spring we decided that the horses should be at their very best late August. In the Derby Trial they were first and second, with Go Go Gadget a little surprisingly the best of them.

“Two weeks before our Derby, we chose not to go to the Swedish Derby. I think that was smart, because our opponents had to fight with bad weather and heavy conditions. After a brilliant ride by Eddie Ahern, Go Go Gadget won the Norwegian Derby, and it was a fantastic feeling finally to have trained the winner of a Derby. This year I have two of the favourites for the Norwegian Derby, Manchester and Cawett Cove (IRE), so who knows? Two in a row would not be bad!”

Petersen has a great chance of getting his first championship as a trainer at Øvrevoll, and, listening to him, it is readily apparent how much this achievement would mean to him.

“Of course it is important for me. You can read about it in the books, and you know that you have done some things right. I can understand that people see me as a favourite this year, but Arnfinn Lund, 12-time champion, has some good horses and may be a tough challenger. The first price in Marit Sveaas’ Memorial is 800,000 kroner (about £80,000 pounds), so that will be an important race.”

In ten years, Petersen says, “Hopefully I will still be working with horses. The two leading trainers in Norway the last 20 years, Wido Neuroth and Arnfinn Lund, are 62 and 75 years old, so compared to them I have just started my career!”

Petersen loves to play golf and tennis In his spare time away from the yard, but he admits that “it is almost impossible to find time.” He adds, “You can also find me in the kitchen, making my favourite dish, called Danish Hakkebof (hamburger steak). Even the kids like it, so then it has to be good. If I can choose from the menu, I think I would prefer lobster with a good white wine in the glass. It’s expensive, but if I win the Derby or become champion trainer for the first time, it could be the right occasion. Until then there is much work to do.” n

Using the magic of stem cells to treat equine injuries North American Trainer published an article [“Tendon Treatments” by Kimberly French, Issue 11] that detailed how this therapy is used to treat tendon injuries, and another article that provided an overall look at stem cells based on an Italian study [“Stem Cells: are they the future in treating injuries in Racehorses?” by Niki Luciani, Issue 15], but because this is a rapidly growing area of research, we felt it is a subject worth covering again, with an emphasis this time on the adipose-derived stem cell treatment.

hat if you had a magic elixir that could cure any bowed tendon or stop a simple chip in the knee from developing into full-blown arthritis? What if you knew that this elixir could quickly and easily be extracted from the injured horse, then injected into the injury to facilitate the successful return of your horse to training and racing?

Musculoskeletal injuries, particularly the soft tissue injuries such as bows or suspensories, are common in athletic horses, yet many of these injuries remain challenging to treat. New, innovative, and effective treatment options for these injuries are needed.

With increased research efforts in the field of regenerative medicine, it appears that stem cell therapy may fit the bill. Stem cells are special cells in the body that have the unique ability to become virtually any type of cell possible such as tendon, cartilage, and ligament cells.

The goal of this article is to look at the types of injuries that these cells can treat, how these cells are collected then “regenerate” rather than simply “repair” damaged tissues.

What injuries can be treated?

Stem cells are being used to treat racehorses with: l Bowed tendons (superficial or deep digital flexor tendonitis); l Suspensory ligament injuries; and l Condylar fractures and chip fractures.

Trainer Eoin Harty, known for Well Armed’s record-breaking 14-length win in the 2009 Dubai World Cup, has treated six horses with stem cells so far. He has used stem cells to treat suspensory ligament injuries, one filly with chronic bad spurs in her knee, and even a horse with white line disease.

Established New Yorker Tom Bush, trainer of Get Stormy, winner of the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland in April and the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes on Derby Day at Churchill Downs, has also used stem cells in several horses.

“I’ve used stem cells in one tendon with a minor lesion and a few suspensories. One suspensory was a classic branch lesion, and the other was a high suspensory,” Bush recalls.

Although less widely recognised, stem cells are also being studied for bone regeneration to help with fracture repairs, laminitis, subchondral bone cysts, and even skin lesions.

Collecting and Injecting Stem Cells Adult stem cells are primarily found in bone

marrow and adipose (fat) tissue. Cells from both sources are currently being used to treat racehorses.

Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells According to Dr. Scott Hopper, a surgeon at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, a bone marrow sample is collected relatively easily with the horse “standing under sedation, with a bone marrow needle.” Once collected, the stem cells need to be cultured in a laboratory before they are injected back into the injured horse. It takes approximately two-to-three weeks to culture the cells. Rood and Riddle’s Stem Cell Laboratory indicates that the process generates enough cells for multiple treatments and banking. Considering it can take six-to-twelve months for a horse to come back from a tendon or ligament injury, this delay may or may not be significant.

“I consult Dean Richardson [at the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania] for my lameness and he uses bone marrow stem cells.

It takes a couple of weeks, but we have enough that we can re-inject the cells 60 or 90 days later when we re-scan the horse,” says Bush, who is not concerned with the delay between collecting the bone marrow and treating the horse.

Adipose-Derived Stem Cells In contrast to Bush, proponents of fat-derived stem cell therapy believe that time is of the essence when it comes to treating musculoskeletal disorders in horses.

“Once an owner or trainer decides to pursue stem cell therapy, they want it done yesterday. With adipose-derived stem cells, the horse can be treated within a few days of making the decision,” says Dr. Faith Hughes, a surgeon at Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Florida. “This is not the case with bone marrow-derived stem cells.”

Adipose-derived stem cells can quickly be harvested from the fat pad located near the tail head. Depending on the company used to process the collected fat sample, either an incision can be made or a plug of fat can be obtained via “liposuction” using a small needle-like instrument.

According to Hughes, collecting fat is not difficult; however, people should be aware of the fact that there simply isn’t a lot of fat, even at the tail head, in a fit racehorse.

Fortunately, stem cells are very concentrated in fat so only a small sample is needed. Once the fat is collected there are different ways to get the stem cells depending on which company your veterinarian uses. One option is to ship the fat in a sterile container to a commercial laboratory for processing.

Dr. Robert Harman, DVM, MPVM, CEO and founder of Vet-Stem, Inc. describes how his laboratory processes the cells.

“After we receive the shipment in a refrigerated collection box, the laboratory does quality evaluation of the sample and then extracts the stem and regenerative cell population from the fat using enzymes and high-speed spinning. Repeated rinsing of the cell mix to remove the enzymes and any other contaminants is done in addition to quality control evaluations of the cell mix and automated accurate cell counting.

Sterile syringes are filled with the appropriate number of cells for each dose needed, which are shipped back immediately (i.e., the same day) to the veterinarian for treating the horse. We believe that a central laboratory is the only way to ensure the quality and safety of the cells for the veterinarian.”

A second option is to purchase a kit so the treating veterinarian can collect, process, and activate the cells “in-house” (e.g., the surgery suite) then inject the cells into the injury the same day.

According to Jeremy Delk, Managing Director of MediVet America, their kit yields a very high number of cells from only a small amount of fat.

Sound crazy? You’re not alone, but as Delk says, “a few years ago people laughed at the thought of PRP and now look at how popular it is.

Activation of these cells combined with the very high cell numbers in my opinion is key to achieving a successful long term treatment.”

Data provided by Delk shows that cells collected from fat have a much higher viability being activated with PRP and an LED light. In fact, there were twice as many regenerative cells in the activated colonies after 48 hours than the controls.

“They are regenerative cells, but only 2-4% of the cells are actually true stem cells that have the ability to differentiate,” explains Delk.

Don’t be deceived, however; the remainder of the sample is not “junk,” but actually contains other proteins, cells, and growth factors that are as potent and important as the stem cells themselves.

Examples include thymosin beta-4, osteoclast-1, ephrin A1, connective tissue growth factor, and transforming growth factor beta-2.

Delk adds, “Unlike bone marrow, adipose-derived stem cell therapy and the stromal vascular fraction act as a multipotent delivery system.

The power of this stromal vascular fraction is just as, if not more, important of what these cells actually secrete in order to promote this repair.”

course of events that lead to regeneration of the injured tissue are not precisely known.

Studies suggest that stem cells themselves can become tendon cells, for example, and help regenerate the damaged tissue. Alternatively, the stem cells can signal other stem cells in the soft tissues and stimulate those “resident” stem cells to regenerate the damaged tendon tissue.

Harman adds, “Stem cells from marrow or fat also reduce inflammation and pain in the injured area, stimulate growth of new blood vessels, and help prevent damaged cells from dying. They are truly paramedics!”

Does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

use of multi-potent cells for a variety of conditions in the horse,” relays Joseph Yocum, DVM, ABVP, an equine practitioner at Green Tree Veterinary Services in Kentucky and founder of The Center for Regenerative Medicine.

Yocum recently spoke at the second North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Conference held June 2-4, 2011, in Lexington, on the virtues of adipose-derived stem cells in equine practice and relayed that besides tendon injuries, stem cells reportedly can be used in subchondral bone cysts, laminitis, and fractures.

“I have also used stem cells in joints to treat a couple of severe OCD lesions. I administered three-to-four treatments one month apart and had a pretty good response.

This is not a controlled study by any measure, and the results are anecdotal, but I was still pleased with the outcome,” adds Yocum.

In addition to these anecdotal reports, some

“hard” evidence supporting stem cells in horses has been published. For example, one study on adipose-derived stem cells concluded that this therapy “appears

warranted” for superficial digital flexor tendon injuries. The researcher team, led by Dr Alan Nixon, a board-certified surgeon and professor at Cornell University’s College of

INDUSTRY too good to be tRue? Stem cells are relatively easy to collect and inject, and appear to be beneficial for horses, but like any medical or surgical intervention, there are pros and cons associated with the procedure. For example, swelling and inflammation can develop after a stem cell injection. Joints appear particularly susceptible and a “joint flare” can occur after the injection. In most cases, horses respond to medical treatment.

Cost may also be an issue as the procedure is approximately €1400 –€2000. While this may seem excessive for some owners, Bush says, “The cost is not that outrageous when you look at the cost of laying the horse up for six-or-seven months.”

Finally, before embarking on a stem cell journey, consider the lack of data regarding if and how stem cells work and how horses do in the long run.

Dyson concurs and adds, “I think that it is very early days at the moment. I am pretty sure that the soup that we inject – mesenchymal progenitor cells, growth factors, etc. – has a positive effect in some horses for management of tendon and ligament injuries. We still don't know how long the cells survive for or what they actually achieve, we don't know what types of injuries are best to treat or at what stage, what the optimum number of cells is or the optimum concentration of the other goodies, such as growth factors.”

Veterinary Medicine, found that although there was no difference in the appearance of the tendon after scanning (ultrasounding) compared to horses that were not injected with stem cells, treated tendons were more “organised” and had better “architecture” than untreated tendons.

Data generated by two commercial laboratories also make stem cell therapies appear promising. At the first North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Conference held in March of 2010 in California, Harmann from Vet-Stem reported that 64.7% of horses with a tendon injury treated with adiposederived stem cells went back to race one or more times.

Similarly, 70.7% of the horses treated for a ligament injury raced one or more times after stem cell therapy. Only 42.4% and 39.7% of the 197 horses with tendon and ligament injuries, respectively, raced three or more times.

A UK-based company, VetCell, which uses bone marrow-derived stem cells, has data from 495 horses – from an original study of 579, with a number of these horses still in the rehabilitation phase and others presented without verifiable names – posted on their website. Of these, 76.6% have returned to racing post-treatment, 55 of them having started greater than ten times.

But hold on: a separate study reported that 71% of horses subjected to only a controlled exercise program after injuring a tendon or ligament returned to racing. This data indicates that a carefully designed rehabilitation program can get horses back to the races as well as stem cell therapy.

The “secret” lies in the reinjury rate and there are two specific peer-reviewed journals that have studied this. One, by Dr Sue Dyson at the Animal Health Trust, showed that approximately 57% of horses treated by conventional therapies sustain a reinjury.

In contrast, data published in 2011 by a group of researchers at the Royal Veterinary College in Hatfield, UK, show that stem cell implantation using VetCell’s technique reduces this reinjury rate to 27%. Both studies collected follow-up data on more

than 100 national hunt horses that had sustained a superficial digital flexor tendon injury.

Stem Cell Therapy a “Valuable Addition” While researchers and veterinarians are trying to gain a better understanding of how stem cells really work and where they go after they are injected, trainers like Harty are embracing stem cells for treating their horses’ soft tissue injuries.

“I don’t want to know how it works or why it works, I just want to know that it does work, and in my experience, stem cells really seem to be effective. It was phenomenal how the horses came back,” says Harty.

Although Bush reports a more modest success rate than Harty, Bush is still a proponent of the treatment.

“It is a pretty standard treatment with me.

One of the tendons we treated with stem cells was only a minor lesion, but we did it anyway because we wanted to do everything we could. It was done one year ago and the horse has come back well,” relays Bush. “The horse we did with a very high suspensory did not do as well, but we weren’t that surprised because it had a poor prognosis to start with.”

Bush also says that he realises the verdict is still out on the efficacy of stem cell therapy but in his opinion, “It has a lot of merit. I think it will become a very popular and beneficial treatment for these soft tissue injuries.”

Maximizing your Chances of Success To get the best possible outcome following stem cell therapy, Hughes reminds us, “The goal of stem cell therapy is to improve the quality of tendon healing, not increase the speed of healing. The tendon may ultimately heal more quickly, getting the horse back into training sooner, but this is not the main goal of stem cell therapy.”

Yocum concurs and adds, “Trainers try to get their horses back as fast as possible. My goal is to get better, not quicker, healing. To do this, stem cells need to be used in addition to the regular rehabilitation programs.” n

O

ne of the novelties of the current British summer has been the ‘Filly Factor’ competition to find Britain’s first female race-caller. The upshot is that Hayley Moore, younger sister of former champion jockey Ryan, is now lined up to take on this role. This harmless piece of positive discrimination is easy enough to understand, particularly in a racing community which for too long has been male-dominated in all departments. What came as more of a surprise, though, was the announcement that part of her prize would be some time spent at commentators’ school – the surprise being, of course, that such a thing exists.

In the modern world, in which a supposed requirement for ‘vocational qualifications’ has spawned numerous new quasi-educational industries, there seem to be ‘academic’ courses for everything, so it should not come as too much of a surprise that there is now, seemingly, a commentators’ school. Have, though, we reached the stage where a trainers’ school is on the horizon?

In one sense, of course, Britain has a trainers’ school, in so far as all aspiring trainers have to

attend courses at the British Racing School, designed as much to allow the authorities to check the applicants’ credentials as to teach the pupils how to train. The truth is that the vast majority of the skills required by a future trainer have always been, and will always be, learned from practical experience in training stables, rather than in any class-room.

If all trainers, therefore, are potential tutors for future trainers, which of them are best at training trainers? One whose name keeps cropping up when up-and-coming trainers reflect on their backgrounds is Luca Cumani.

Training a large string very successfully, Cumani naturally has a fairly rigid chain of command in his Bedford House Stables, with his assistants and head lads ensuring that the trainer’s will is done throughout the stable and also ensuring that all information concerning the horses reaches the ears of the boss, so that his decisions may all be based on a thorough knowledge of all the horses under his care.

Understandably, holding a position within such a stable acts as a very suitable way of gaining the experience required to be a trainer in one’s own right. The list of current British trainers who have worked as head lad, assistant trainer or pupil/assistant in the past in Cumani’s stable includes Chris Wall, James

Toller, David Simcock, Marco Botti, Donald McCain, Jonathan Portman, Jon Scargill, Ed Walker, Tommy Keddy and this writer; while successful trainers around the world to have held key positions in Cumani’s stable include Christophe Clement, Fabrizio Camici and Guillermo Arizkoreta, whose careers are flourishing in America, Italy and Spain respectively. No doubt, in the fullness of time Cumani’s current assistant, his son Matt, will become a successful trainer in his own right – presumably in Bedford House Stables.

Ed Walker seems to echo the thoughts of all of Cumani’s protégés in speaking of the benefits of having spent time in Bedford House Stables: “Luca’s a great mentor in the sense that I always found that he was never too busy to answer any question I might have asked him – no matter how stupid it might have been! He took the trouble and the time to explain anything he was doing whenever I asked and to give me the reasoning behind his methods.

“He’s unbelievably thorough, and he instills it in his staff to be likewise. Day in, day out he’ll go the extra mile to be on the spot all the time, regularly rushing back from the races so as not to miss his regular evening round of inspection. He’s incredibly observant, misses

TRAINING TRAINERS nothing – and therefore he’s the perfect trainer from whom to learn.

“Over and above all else, Luca is exceptionally patient with his horses and that means that ultimately he gets the very best out of them. I think that that is probably the greatest lesson any horseman can learn.”

However, it would be wrong to give the impression that Cumani deliberately sets out to run a trainers’ academy. He doesn’t; first and foremost, he trains the horses under his care. It is simply the case that those lucky enough to be in the position of working for him can either choose to keep their eyes and ears open and learn by observing his triedand-tested methods, or they can turn down this golden opportunity. Naturally, the majority choose to watch, listen, learn and inwardly digest. If there is one trainer, though, who consciously runs some sort of trainers’ training programme, that man would be Sir Mark Prescott, whose Heath House academy now has its former pupils spread far around the world.

Prescott has spent his entire training career in Heath House Stables at the bottom of Long Hill in Newmarket. He arrived there in the late ‘60s to work as assistant trainer to Jack Waugh, and took over the stable on Waugh’s retirement in 1971. He has subsequently repaid the favour which fate – and Waugh – did him many times over, helping numerous ambitious youngsters along the road to success. For many years, his modus operandi was at any given time to have an assistant and a pupil-assistant, each on a two-year posting Each youngster had to move on at the end of his term, to make way for the next recipient of this opportunity to learn. Many of his protégés have graduated to successful careers in racing, including the likes of William Haggas, Jonathan Pease,

Henry de Bromhead, Simon Crisford and successful Californian-based trainer Ian Jory.

Prescott continues to apply the two-year rule to his pupil-assistants, but the policy has been altered since the arrival of his current assistant William Butler, who looks set to hold the position until the time comes for him to take over from his mentor, just as Prescott did previously from Waugh. He might, though, have to wait awhile!

As Prescott’s former pupils invariably confirm, the Heath House academy provides lessons in life as well as in virtuoso horsemanship. Prescott is a perfectionist, expecting others to abide by the sky-high standards by which he lives his life. He thus provides youngsters with the perfect start to their adult lives, even if the advantages of such an education can be easier to appreciate in retrospect than at the time. As his former assistant Henry de Bromhead observed after training Sizing Europe to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, “Sally Alner (for whose husband Robert he had worked prior to his stint at Heath House) rang to congratulate me, and then I heard a familiar voice behind me say, ‘Well done, Henry.’ It sent shivers down my spine – it was Sir Mark!”

The most recent Heath House graduate to have taken out a trainer’s license is Toby Coles, currently in his second season as a trainer in Newmarket’s Hamilton Road. Coles worked for Sir Mark as a pupil/assistant at the outset of his working life, before completing his preparation for training by working overseas. He reflects on his time at Heath House thus: “Having the chance to begin my adult life as a pupil-assistant to Sir Mark provided me with a grounding second to none.

“If you go to Heath House from school or university, you will likely have had rather a sheltered life up to that point, and going there is a great way of breaking into the big wide world because, in Sir Mark, you find that you have a father-figure who will back you all the way, provided of course that you are prepared to give him your best in return.

“As a grounding for horsemanship, the strength of a Heath House education is that everything in the stable is done absolutely meticulously, and that is shown in every aspect of the yard. As regards horse husbandry, the complete understanding of a horse’s soundness and health which you can develop if you pay attention to Sir Mark and his vet will hold you in good stead wherever you go in the world, because the principles behind keeping a horse sound and healthy in one part of the world are exactly the same as in another.

“And Sir Mark also provides you with a template of how you should conduct yourself – both in public and, equally importantly, in private. His aim is that his meticulously high standards should become your norm, so that,

as you go through life both as a horseman and as a human being, if anything is out of place or not right, you’ll notice it straightaway.

“Being a pupil-assistant there is a great base on which you can build the rest of your life, if you chose to do so.

“On a personal level, Sir Mark is the complete meticulous horseman, but he also has other interests and he tries to instill these in others, which is great, because his influence can only make one a more rounded human being.”

Just as Sir Mark Prescott is arguably the most rigid adherent to old-school standards in the UK, one could make the same remark about Jim Bolger in Ireland. Like Prescott, Bolger does not suffer fools – and, like Prescott, he too is thus a great man from whom to learn. Consequently, numerous of his former employees have gone on to glory, most obviously Aidan O’Brien and A P McCoy. Their successes highlight the obvious point that generally trainers who are good at educating future trainers are likely to be equally good at educating future jockeys.

This is easy to understand because the necessary ingredients for success in one career are the same as those required in the other, most obviously horsemanship, professionalism, self-discipline, and a capacity for hard work. This point is further illustrated by the fact that Luca Cumani’s record for producing jockeys is on a par with his record for producing trainers, his former apprentices including Frankie Dettori, Jason Weaver, Royston Ffrench and Nicky Mackay.

Similarly, those who maintain that the foundations for their racing future were laid during the time that they were employed by the late Malton trainer Jimmy FitzGerald include both Kieren Fallon and the up-and-

coming young French trainer Mikael Delzangles.

After his grounding with FitzGerald, Delzangles completed his preparations for training with a lengthy spell as assistant to Alain de Royer-Dupre – a position which had previously been held by both Eric Libaud and Stephane Wattel. De Royer-Dupre’s most recent assistant, Francis Graffard, is now about to embark on his own training career, and he speaks enthusiastically of the benefits of his recent job, “I have found working for Alain a real education. He’s a genuinely nice man who has been very happy to share his knowledge with me. He treats every horse as an individual and he would invariably explain why he was doing a particular thing with a particular horse. I have been working in a yard of 85 horses – with a real spread of ability from Group One horses such as Reliable Man through to claiming horses – and it was a case of getting to know how he likes things done and then making sure that they are done. Once he knows that you can do things his way, he gives you responsibility and trusts you to get on with things, and I think and hope that he has thus helped me to become prepared for running my own stable.”

At the time of writing, British racing’s mostly newly-licensed high-profile trainer is set to be Charlie Hills, who is in the process of taking over at Faringdon Place Stables from his father Barry. As Hills snr stands, like Luca Cumani and Sir Mark Prescott, as a colossus of his profession and as the proven mentor for numerous protégés who have already made their way in the racing world, we can be sure that Charlie will have been trained to be a chip off the old block, hard an act though his father will be to follow. n

Developed in Germany, Equine Manual Lymph Drainage (EMLD) is slowly gaining a foothold in veterinary medicine and becoming a popular treatment modality for performance horses on the continent.

MLD is proving to be effective in the treatment of lymphatic insufficiency as well as improving recuperation times after injury or periods of high exertion. Here we will examine the role of the equine lymphatic system, how it differs from that of the human, and describe the clinical applications of this relatively new therapy.

Understanding the lymphatic system and its function The lymphatic system is an extensive system of vessels and nodes that plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance within the body by collecting and returning interstitial fluid to the venous system of the blood. Interstitial fluid fills the spaces between muscles, organs, and other cellular structures, and allows substances such as oxygen and nutrients to travel through it to reach the cells. Arterial filtrate and larger particles such as cell debris, bacteria, dead blood cells, pathogens, toxins, and protein molecules are collected by the lymphatic system from the interstitium through small, initial lymphatic vessels (ILVs). These ILVs begin blind in the tissues rather like the fingers of a glove and are joined by anchoring filaments to the collagen fibres of the connective tissue. These form a network of superficial lymph capillaries draining first to pre-collectors and then to the larger collector vessels. Each single unit, or angion, fills up with lymph until the internal pressure stimulates muscle cells to push it through a valve into the next angion. These valves are designed to prevent lymphatic backflow into the previous angion and therefore they dictate the direction of lymph flow.

The lymphatic system does not have an organ to act as a pump to help with the

circulation of the lymph. It relies upon extrinsic factors such as muscular contraction, arterial pulsation, the peristaltic action of the intestinal system and increased thoracic pressure during deep respiration to stimulate lymphatic flow. Intrinsic factors include the contractions of the muscle fibres of the collector vessels and the rate of absorption of lymph by the ILVs. Areas of ILVs, pre-collectors, and subcutaneous collectors work together in

Lymph from one skin territory will generally not travel across these watersheds into other skin territories unless the neighbouring territory becomes very congested. In these instances, the lymphatic system can use anastamoses – small connecting vessels – to cross the watersheds and enable lymph to pass.

The superficial lymphatic system drains the dub cutis and the skin, whilst the deep lymphatic system drains the mucosa, nerves, tendons, tendon sheaths, joints, and muscles.

Each internal organ also has its own specific deep drainage pathway. Lymphatic fluid slows and becomes more concentrated when it enters a lymph node. Nodes act as biological filters and play an important part in immunological response, being responsible for the manufacture of T-lymphocytes. The cleaned and filtered lymph re-enters the blood supply via the external jugular veins.

Major differences between human and equine lymphatic systems Although there are similarities between human and equine lymphatic systems, there are some profound differences between them, the misunderstanding of which can lead to the health of the horse being compromised. The horse has evolved from a small flight animal designed to be in almost constant motion, to the animals we utilise today. Although there have been great changes in the external appearance of the horse, its physiology remains largely similar to that of its earlier ancestors.

One study of feral populations of horses have shown them to be walking between 6 to 8 kilometres per 16-hour day, although it must be understood that if food is limited or scarce, horses can travel 30 kilometres a day. Modern methods of keeping horses stabled, with limited time for free exercise and concentrated physical training sessions, can lead to compromised lymphatics and its associated complications.

One of the main differences in the equine lymphatic system is the significantly lower number of smooth muscle cells compromising the wall of the collector vessels. Research has revealed that equine collectors within the cutis

VETERINARY “bottlenecks” than other mammals.

As swollen legs in horses are generally not considered an illness, many owners will try to reduce swelling by using stable bandages over padding. However, in 2006 a large veterinary study on the effect of different types of bandaging on the lymphatic vessels was undertaken. This involved injecting a continuous stream of contrast medium (dye) into the lymphatic vessels of horses under sedation and x-raying the effects. Horses bandaged with the stable bandages were found to have significantly impeded lymph flow, compared to those bandaged with specially designed compression stockings. Horses’ tendons have been shown to contain a high density of lymphatic vessels to blood vessels.

This highlights the need for further increased awareness of the clinical effects of bandaging on lymphatic performance. The authors of the study recommended that in the future, the materials and construction of both veterinary and equine sports bandages be reconsidered.

are comprised of 40% elastic fibres – markedly more than in humans – and the cutis represents the horses’ own “compressive bandage.” This means that the horse requires far more physical movement in order to activate its lymphatic retraction apparatus and encourage the transport of lymphatic fluid. The elastic fibres are assisted by a “pump mechanism” in the hoof and the fetlock joint, which assist lymph travel up the collector vessels. This high proportion of elastic fibres may have developed because there are no muscles in the lower limbs of the horse to aid with the contraction of the vessels.

Therefore, when a horse is standing still, the transport capacity of the lymphatic system

decreases significantly. The rate of lymph flow will be reduced and lymph flow by volume will drop. This puts the standing horse at a distinct disadvantage with regard to recovery from injury or exertion. In addition, the horse has an extremely high number of lymph nodes – roughly 8,000 (4,000 of which are in the ascending colon), compared to an average of 600 in the human. The equine lymphatic system is therefore compromised when access to ad lib food is restricted, as the lymphatics of the duodenum are stimulated by the continuous flow of forage through the intestines. As lymph slows down and concentrates upon entering each node, horses have a greater propensity for lymphatic

In humans, it is more difficult to stimulate the deep collectors due to a much thicker subcutaneous layer.

How does EMLD work?

EMLD is a highly specific massage technique that works by stretching the skin in the direction of lymphatic flow in a biphasic, rhythmical manner in order to increase the rate of interstitial fluids being drawn into the ILVs. Each movement consists of a “push” phase, whereby the ILVs are emptied into the precollectors, and a “relief” phase, whereby the ILVs are dilated by the anchoring filaments in order that fluid can flow into them. Practical training and experience is required by

therapists in order to learn the specialised hand movements. If EMLD is employed with disregard to the specific direction of lymph flow, the correct rhythm and speed, or to the required relief phase, EMLD can be ineffectual and, at worst, detrimental to administer.

There are specific treatment protocols for each area of the horse, although the therapist will often need to adjust the length of time spent on specific areas depending on the quality and feel of the oedematous areas. The first step in treatment requires the activation of the superficial cervical lymph nodes, as this increases the direction of flow from the left thoracic duct to the jugular vein, where cleaned lymph returns to venous system of the blood.

Therapists use anastamoses to push lymph from one skin territory to the next.

Myofibroblasts exert a “pacemaker” activity in lymphatic vessels, which might explain why EMLD is so effective and is able to stimulate collectors outside, as well as inside, the area where the technique is applied.

EMLD must ideally be performed daily for the first phase, and after results are seen this can be reduced to 2-3 times per week, until the oedema has diminished. In cases of chronic cellulitis or lymphangitis, prophylactic EMLD is usually recommended.

Compressive bandaging is used as part of Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for the treatment of oedema. Specialised shortstretch bandages are used as they exhibit a low resting pressure when the horse is standing and increase pressure only when the horse is in motion. Bandages are applied over 100% cotton wool roll as it stops the bandage from sliding off, and it is padded out to provide a cylindrical profile. The bandage is applied with graduated pressure from the hoof upwards, to encourage lymph flow out of the limb. Horses are then trotted up to check the efficacy of the bandage, and may be turned out in an arena or dry and even pasture. Ideally, bandages are applied after exercise and an EMLD treatment, and if possible, the horse is exercised again after bandaging. The most beneficial gait for such exercise is a slow canter, as the negative intra-thoracic pressure generated is higher.

Therapists may augment EMLD with other treatment modalities, such as the use of Deep OscillationTM which uses an electro-static charge to gently “shuffle” cells and is beneficial in softening protein fibrosis and improving healing times. The use of Kinesio tape (see “Working the Kinesio tape therapy magic” in Issue 32) can also be used to increase effectiveness by encouraging lymphatic fluid to keep draining after each treatment session.

Both Deep OscillationTM and Kinesio tape are well tolerated by horses, but there are currently no scientific studies that conclusively prove their effectiveness in augmenting EMLD.

Therapeutic uses of EMLD The therapy is effective in a wide variety of clinical applications: l Reduction in recovery times after periods of high exertion, leading to less stiffness or soreness. Human MLD used as a prophylactic for professional athletes increases lactate elimination and this has also been confirmed in equines. l Reduction in recovery times from surgery or injury, due to faster removal of exudates and inflammatory cells. EMLD is effective in encouraging the healing of poorly healing wounds and can also reduce scarring. l Significantly reduced recovery times in the treatment of tendonitis. It has been shown EMLD encourages the new collagen fibres to align longitudinally. The horse’s lymphatic system removes and transports the excess interstitial fluid from the tendons, which provdes the first important step in the regeneration of the tendon. l The treatment of acute and sub acute laminitis by reducing the inflammatory response, reducing toxins, and alleviating pressure on the pedal bones and hoof capsule. l The treatment of equine rhabdomyolosis (azoturia) and ‘tying up’ syndrome, with treated horses showing less muscle symptoms and faster recovery. l The treatment of recurrent vasculitis, cellulitis, and lymphangitis, after the infective stage is under control. The treatment of chronic pastern dermatitis (mud fever), which is often a precursor to lymphangitis and can be a sign of an already compromised lymphatic system.

The treatment of ‘filled legs’ (idiopathic or hereditary primary lymphoedema), which may be a precursor to latent primary lymphoedema.

The treatment of equine lymphoedema complex, which is similar in pathology and treatment to human lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema can be divided into primary or secondary types, the former being a congenital insufficiency of the lymphatic system and the latter being as a result of damage from either injury or infection. Primary lymphoedema can be latent, meaning that it is not noticed until the lymphatic system becomes exhausted or is put under increased pressure via injury or infection. Both types of lymphoedema can be classified according to severity on a scale ranging from latent lymphoedema through to elephantiasis.

Contraindications of EMLD EMLD is contraindicated in cases of acute infection, as increased rate of flow could potentially cause infection to spread. It is contraindicated in cases of left cardiac insufficiency due to additional lymph fluid increasing cardiac pre-load.

EMLD EMLD trained therapists in the UK Therapists in the UK must first train in Human MLD to CDT level, usually via respected MLD academies such as Vodder and Foeldi.

The EMLD course is run by The European Seminar of Equine Lymphatic Drainage (ESEL) and only therapists who have satisfied the ESEL Board of Examiners will have met the requirements to practice.

Therapists should hold certificates of insurance, and veterinary permission needs to be given before any treatment commences. It is important to realise that the terms ‘EMLD’ and ‘MLD’ are not protected as pertaining to a certain standard of training in the UK. This

allows people to be able to claim to be able to administer MLD, when in fact they are doing something very different.

In conclusion EMLD is a relatively new therapy, but has been used successfully since the 1930s in human medicine. On the continent, human MLD has many therapeutic applications and of the 4,500 human physiotherapists in Germany, most will know how to administer MLD. The subsequent development of the EMLD technique and many research programmes has been mainly due to the pioneering work of Professor Berens von Rautenfeld, a veterinary

surgeon working within the Medical School at University of Hannover.

More research is needed in order to increase the range of clinical applications of EMLD. Horses are very receptive to the therapy as it is gentle enough to work around painful wounds or incision sites. A tango with Thoroughbreds Argentina is a nation of horse lovers. But beyond the romantic image of handsome, beret-clad polo players or tanned gauchos surveying vast herds of cattle in the Latin American Pampa, the country has a rich tradition of breeding and racing thoroughbreds. With 8500 foals born each year – a figure which has risen by 40% in the last five years – this is the fourth largest producer of bloodstock in the world.

I

n 2006 the Argentine industry took a great leap forward thanks to American Horse of the Year Invasor who put his native land firmly on the racing map. Bred in the province of Buenos Aires at the Haras Clausan which is now renamed the Haras Santa Inés, Invasor raced in neighhbouring Uruguay at Maroñas racecourse where he won the local Triple Crown. This is where the son of Candy Stripes was spotted and purchased by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s team before graduating to bigger and better things further afield, winning half a dozen Grade 1/Group 1 titles in America and Dubai including the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Dubai World Cup, and in the process becoming an important ambassador for his country.

In recent years the well-travelled Mike de Kock has tapped into the affordable potential on offer in Latin America and admits that Argentina and Brazil are his second-largest source of bloodstock after his native South Africa. Success stories include Honour Devil (by Honour and Glory) and Asiatic Boy (Not For Sale) who both completed the Dubai 2000 Guineas/Derby double, and My Indy (Indygo Shiner) who picked up Rounds 1 and

2 of the Al Maktoum Challenge at the Dubai Carnival in 2009. My Indy was bred by one of the most historic studs in Argentina, the Haras La Quebrada. Located in the town of Pilar on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, the stud is tucked away in the corner of an immense playground for wealthy businessmen who have their country houses and polo clubs in these privileged surroundings. La Quebrada has been crowned leading breeder on 17 occasions since its creation in 1945 by the Ceriani family and is rarely out of the top three breeders in Argentina.

“I represent the third generation of Cerianis at the helm of the stud,” explains the current owner Hernan Ceriani, “and the third generation of Hernans, as my father and grandfather shared the same first name.” The family also shares a passion and vision for breeding thoroughbreds which have ensured La Quebrada stands the test of time. “Most of the studs which began at the same time as ours no longer exist; but La Quebrada has always had a pioneering spirit which has helped us to remain at the forefront of the breeding industry. The first American sire to be imported to Latin America was Make Tracks, which my grandfather brought here in 1955. Then in 1989 my father purchased

Southern Halo in America and he was to become the best stallion in the history of Argentinian breeding. Unfortunately he is no longer alive but his bloodlines are very present in our breeding operation.” The influential Southern Halo is the dam’s sire of My Indy, but also of La Quebrada-bred Miss Match (Indygo Shiner) who recently became the latest international Gr 1 winner from Argentina thanks to a success in the Santa Margarita Invitational Stakes at Santa Anita in March.

Barely an hour’s drive further from the capital is the most forward-looking and commercial addition to the country’s breeding industry. The Haras La Mission stallion station was created in 2006 by a group of eight major breeders whose objective is to help Argentina secure and maintain a place in the global bloodstock market by providing access to top sires. “Our aim is to improve the genetics of South American thoroughbreds, through investment in the best stallions in the world,” declares La Mission’s manager Nicolas Ojea Quintana. “We recruit sires according to two criteria: firstly, their commercial viability and capacity of being accepted by the local market, and secondly we seek sires which will bring Argentina a step closer to the

international market.” Collaboration with breeding giants Coolmore and Juddmonte has allowed La Mission to welcome modern patriarchs such as Giant’s Causeway and Peintre Celebre and these have been enthusiastically received by locals. As testimony to the popularity of the initiative, 1200 mares were covered by La Mission’s stallions during the last breeding season, and success was demonstrated on the track as La Mission crosses produced the champion twoand three-year-old fillies in 2010.

Another ambitious newcomer to the Argentine breeding scene is Haras La Pasión, the recently-launched breeding arm of the powerful Rubio B stable. This father-son duo of Ricardo and Nicolas Benedicto topped the owners’ championship for a fourth consecutive year in 2010 and are now firmly set on a new goal: to dominate the breeders’ standings. The Benedictos have been quick off the mark; after buying the farm in late 2005, the first mares arrived just over a year later and then the second crop of La Pasión-born foals featured Group 1 winner La Impaciente, who has now boosted the broodmare band.

It may come as a surprise to many that two of the most famous modern-day Northern Hemisphere bloodlines, those of Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells, actually originate from an

Argentine stallion. Bred by the Haras Ojo de Agua, Forli was a Quadruple Crown winner in 1967 in his homeland before being bought by Bull Hancock, who sent him to join the great Charlie Whittingham in America. Billed at the time as the best thoroughbred ever seen in Argentina, Forli duly won his first two races in the USA, including a record-breaking performance at Hollywood Park, before his career was prematurely ended through injury.

At Hancock’s Claiborne Stud, Forli produced 60 stakes winners including three-time Horse of the Year Forego, but his legacy has lived on through his daughter, the aptly-named Special. Special is none other than the dam and granddam of the two famous sons of Northern Dancer, her own cross with the patriarch producing Nureyev and her daughter Fairy Bridge’s cross resulting in the birth of the incomparable Sadler’s Wells.

Lord At War was another Argentine sire to succeed in the US, for his part in the 1980s and 90s, but his story began in Europe two generations earlier. Indeed Lord of War is a son of French-bred General, who in turn is by the brilliant British miler Brigadier Gerard.

War was to be the best of his progeny and also the only descendant of his paternal grandsire to make a significant impact in the breeding sheds (with the possible exception of the Aga Khan-bred Vayrann, who is the maternal grandsire of a Prix de Diane winner). Taking after his grandsire on the track, Lord At War was a champion miler in Argentina then a dual American Grade 1 scorer, again for Charlie Whittingham. He retired to stud at Wimborne Farm and transmits his legacy as a talented broodmare sire, most notably of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes hero War Emblem who unfortunately has not taken to life as a sire in Japan, but also of Grade 1 winner E Dubai who has proved more prolific at stud. As a sire, Lord At War is responsible for Grade 1 scorer Honor In War, standing in Australia, so the Brigadier Gerard heritage is now perpetuated across the globe thanks to his Argentine-born grandson.

Argentina has taken a step closer to Europe in 2011 thanks to deals made by the Latin American Racing Channel for the country’s product to be shown live in France and the UK for betting purposes, and their racing is also regularly simulcast in America. There is regular activity as Buenos Aires boasts three racecourses: San Isidro, Palermo, and La Plata, with flat racing taking place on one of these tracks every day of the year. The internationally-renowned San Isidro recently played host to South America’s itinerant Group 1 Gran Premio Latino Americano and is also home to the prestigious Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini in December, while plans are currently underway to install a grass track at

the city-centre course of Palermo which is famed for its French renaissance-style architecture. Racedays are marathon affairs with programmes of up to, and even exceeding, twenty competitions. This means little respite, but plenty of opportunity, for jockeys and trainers and it is interesting to note that two of the country’s leading riders relocated to Argentina for the quality of its racing. Brazilian-born Jorge Ricardo is something of a legendary figure in racing lore following his long-distance battle with American Russell Baze to become the winningmost rider of all time. “The racing industry in Argentina is very strong and I moved here in order to reach the world record, which I did,” says Ricardo. A serious fall and illness allowed Baze to regain the lead

but Ricardo is now back in the race backed by a lucrative contract with the record-breaking Rubio B Stable. The 49-year-old rider counts over 11,300 successes. “I never imagined that I would manage to go so far and win so many races,” he reflects, “but racing is in my blood.

Time has shown me that effort brings success, so I keep trying and ride with passion and plenty of luck.”

One of Ricardo’s biggest rivals in Buenos Aires is Uruguayan Pablo Falero, who also chose Argentina to pursue his career. “Here the activity is very intense with trackwork in the morning and then long afternoons and evenings of racing. But in other sports, for instance in football, the players must train before a match to maintain their fitness… whereas we keep fit on the job! And of course we have the opportunity to win a lot of races.”

Falero is not exaggerating; he was crowned champion jockey in 2010 with a remarkable score of 438 wins.

Around 2500 horses train daily in the 93hectare San Isidro training centre adjacent to the racecourse in the Northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, described as “the centre of gravity of racing in Argentina,” by the centre’s director Leandro Bianchi. “Approximately 150 trainers are based here, ranging from powerful stables of two-to-three hundred horses, to smaller handlers with just three or four horses. In total, some one thousand people work at San Isidro including trainers, jockeys, work-riders, lads, veterinarians, farriers etc…” Bianchi is proud of this largest training centre in Latin America, which in addition to the one turf and four sand training tracks plus

a giant equine pool available for all to use, also features a laboratory, veterinary clinic, and jockeys’ school.

The set-up is similar to the American backstretch although stables are arranged in private courtyards rather than the barns of the US. However one major difference strikes international visitors immediately – the vast majority of horses are ridden bareback!

“When I went to ride out in the morning in America before a big race, everyone laughed at me and called me an Indian!” remembers former top jockey Jorge Valdevieso, who now trains a string of around 35 horses at San Isidro.

Even half-speed canters take place with legs flailing and the de-rigueur footwear for workriders appears to be tattered espadrilles. A minimum of protection for the horses’ backs and comfort for their riders is offered by foam pads strapped on with surcingles and breastplates. “I feel much safer riding this way,” confides one work rider while giving his mount a welcome shower behind the training tracks. “There is no saddle or stirrups to unbalance me if the horse moves suddenly and I can always just slide back into position without any difficulty.”

Valdivieso sees another advantage in the traditional method, “When we gallop or work the horses, we put a saddle on, so they get to know that a saddle means work and they get excited. Bareback, they remain calm and save their energy.” However fellow San Isidrobased handler Juan Carlos (Carly) Etchechoury would like to see the system change, “It is healthier for the horses to wear

a saddle as the weight of the jockey is more balanced on their backs and they are able to use their legs more fully. But in Argentina horses have always been trained like this and it would be very difficult and unpopular to force change upon the stable lads and work riders.”

Carly Etchechoury knows plenty about the traditions of racing in Argentina, as he comes from the third generation of a training family and is now one of the country’s leading professionals. His brothers Carlos Daniel (known as Daniel) and Juan Javier (Javier) are also trainers, and between the trio they have collected victories in all of Argentina’s most important races. Their father Juan Carlos Etchechoury was a multiple champion trainer and even ventured to Europe in 1977 with top Argentinian filly Mia who fulfilled her owner’s dream with an honourable seventh place in Alleged’s first Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Carly Etchechoury dreams of following in his footsteps and quotes the Arc de Triomphe or Breeders’ Cup as the major ambitions for his career. His brother Daniel plays closer to home and hopes to fill the only gap in his domestic résumé with a win in the country’s longest Group 1 event, Palermo’s 2500 metre Gran Premio Nacional.

He sums up an overall positive vibe emanating from different quarters of an industry with a future on the global stage: “I love the Argentine turf culture, as it is very open, friendly and full of passion. The industry is constantly moving forward and we have some great professionals; trainers, jockeys and breeders and also racing fans.” n

Do bleeders breed bleeders?

The US has recently seen drastic changes regarding its medication policies. In July, the Breeders’ Cup announced that beginning in 2012, its juvenile races will be run without race-day medication, leading the way to a medication ban for all entrants in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup. The month after the Breeders’ Cup press release, the American Graded Stakes Committee issued one of their own, saying all two-year-old Graded stakes races in the country will be run Lasix-free and that a failure to comply will see them lose their graded status.

We wondered what, if any, damage has generations of stallions and mares who raced on Lasix and other race-day drugs done to the breed, and how might it affect the way Americans breed racehorses?

wo days after trainer Kelly Breen won the Belmont Stakes with 24-1 shot Ruler on Ice for owners George and Lori Hall, Belmont Park in New York was the venue for the “International Summit on Race Day Medication, EIPH and the Racehorse,” on June 13 and 14. The juxtaposition of the race and the two-day summit was appropriate for the issues at hand. Breen, who trains privately for the Halls and who’d won the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby earlier this season with Pants On Fire, has been a vocal supporter of the race-day diuretic furosemide (Lasix, Salix) as a therapeutic necessity for bleeding, or exerciseinduced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH). His position is typical for trainers (and veterinarians) and is the stance embraced by the powerful National Horsemen’s Benevolent Protective Association (HBPA). But a growing number of owners and breeders, led by the New York-based Jockey Club (TJC), want to ban race-day medications altogether, especially the race-day use of furosemide, to bring US medication policy in line with the rest of the world. New York was once the

bastion of the Old Guard and was the last state to allow the use of race-day Lasix in the US, on September 1, 1995, and now through the Jockey Club it leads the fight to ban it.

On April 28 of this year, anticipating federal legislation that could change the Interstate Horse Racing Act of 1978 with medication-policy amendments, TJC president and chief operating officer James L. Gagliano issued a statement with the support of Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA, publishers of The BloodHorse); Kentucky Thoroughbred Association (KTA); The Breeders’ Cup, Ltd.; Keeneland Association; and Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America (TRA) that said the Jockey Club “stands convinced that the elimination of race-day medication is essential to achieving optimal stewardship of the horse, the sport, the public perception and confidence, and the business of Thoroughbred racing. We welcome the fresh opportunity, created by the current attention to furosemide, to steer back to a more proper path and urge the development of a comprehensive plan to phase in these reforms, including medication-free competition.”

Though the Jockey Club, which regulates matters relating to breeding stock and administers the Stud Book, has funded some studies in the past relating to EIPH and racing, including a 2009 South African research project, it nor any of its allied groups – essentially the same people involved in ownership and breeding at TOBA, Keeneland, and the Breeders’ Cup – has analysed the effects of bleeding and heritability. [Please refer to Issue 28 of European Trainer for a previous article, entitled “If Lasix is the answer…what is the question?” by Dr. David Marlin, referencing the South African study.] In other words, through the years – and this is surprising – no one had commissioned a “Do Bleeders Breed Bleeders?” type of study in the US, where more “bleeders” presumably go to stud than anywhere else in the world.

Quite unexpectedly, just such a scientific study surfaced on the first day at the Belmont summit and said that bleeders likely do sire bleeders--more ammunition for the Jockey Club’s and its allies’ position. The summit was organised by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA),

and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC), groups that aren’t unified and in agreement about banning raceday furosemide. Therefore, this particular study, another from South Africa, must have come as a surprise to the AAEP. Titled “A genetic analysis of epistaxis as associated with EIPH in the Southern African Thoroughbred,” by H. Weideman, S.J. Schoeman, and G.F. Jordaan, the study had first appeared in 2004 in the South African Journal of Animal Science and was largely unknown outside of South Africa, and therefore not examined and debated here beforehand.

The study’s definition of a bleeder was a strict one, too: a horse had to exhibit epistaxis, or bleeding from both nostrils, to be classified a bleeder. It was introduced at the summit by Scotsman and international veterinarian Dr John McVeigh, a principal of Baker and McVeigh Equine Hospital in South Africa; Baker, McVeigh and Clements Ltd. in the UK; and BMC and Mennessier in France.

The Blood-Horse editor-in-chief and executive vice-president of Blood-Horse Publications, Eric Mitchell, has written the most about the study since its unveiling at Belmont, and who can blame him, as it’s a ready-made bullet for his constituency--the TOBA, which supports the TJC position on banning of race-day furosemide. In his June 14th article titled, “Study: EIPH is an Inherited Trait,” Mitchell quotes Dr McVeigh

as saying, “The relationship between runners with EIPH and the stallion has a heritability of 0.4, which is very high.” Dr McVeigh, however, also is quoted as saying, “The two sires that produced the most bleeder progeny were both champion sires.”

The last statement is severely problematic and questions the practical validity of the study, which suggests long term the “disqualification of ‘bleeders’ from being registered in the Stud Book and that furosemide be banned internationally from racing.” But the statement raises this question, too: Does a champion sire produce a higher number of bleeders because they run harder and faster?

One of the sires that Dr McVeigh was referring to in the study is the recently deceased US-bred Roberto horse Al Mufti. He was from the same 1985 crop as two other leading sires by Roberto: top international stallion Dynaformer (still active in the US) and Brian’s Time, based in Japan. Al Mufti was a champion South African sire and one of the most influential in the country during his years at stud. He was pensioned in 2007 after entering stud duty in 1990 and was put down in March of this year, but his influence continues to this date as the sire of the 2011 Group 1 Cape Derby winner Top Seller – one of his 11 Group 1 winners.

It’s also a fact that he owns one of the highest percentages of runners to foals of racing age in South Africa at 87 percent – a staggeringly high ratio and one that indicates he sires sound stock, bleeders aside. To put this figure in context, note that home-grown South African champion sire Jet Master’s percentage of runners to foals of racing age is 71 percent.

By any of these standards, Al Mufti was top shelf as a sire, but he made the “Top 5” list in the South African study because 21 of 284 runners, or 7.4 percent, exhibited epistaxis during the time span covered from 1986 to 2002.

Notwithstanding that Al Mufti was an exceptional sire who also sired 7.4 percent bleeders, as a racehorse in Europe and later in South Africa (where he ran after one year at stud in 1990, placing in the prestigious Rothman’s in July 1991) he raced without medication, and it would have been impossible to predict that he’d sire bleeders from his own race history.

Practically speaking, by the time it was discovered that he did sire some bleeders, he’d established that he was capable of producing high-quality runners, too, which begs this question: “What do they expect people to do, not breed to a leading sire because he’s siring some bleeders?” asked Kentucky-based Glencrest Farm’s John Greathouse, who vociferously supports raceday Lasix and defends the American racing game from foreign criticism. “America continues to apologise to the rest of the world

In 1990, the year Al Mufti covered his first mares, Summer Squall (by Storm Bird from Weekend Surprise, whose dam, Lassie Dear, is the dam of Al Mufti) bled from the nostrils at Pimlico while grazing after a workout the day before the Preakness.

Treated race-day with furosemide, Summer Squall won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, but he did not contest the Belmont Stakes that season because New York at the time still prohibited Lasix. It’s safe to assume that he wouldn’t have been a classic winner at all without the medication. At stud at Jockey Club member Will Farish’s Lane’s End Farm, the bleeder Summer Squall enjoyed a fairly successful career, siring Derby and Preakness winner Charismatic among others, but like many colts from his dam he had fertility issues that eventually stopped him well before his time. Infertility (and age) ended the career of his champion half-brother A.P. Indy earlier this year at Lane’s End as well.

John Phillips, grandson of Darby Dan founder John W. Galbreath, now runs the historic nursery that once stood Roberto, sire of Al Mufti, among others, and he said he’s never knowingly stood a bleeder who’d exhibited epistaxis at stud but has stood horses that’ve had throat problems, without success. “I regret having done that. I think there’s some related issues between bleeders and horses with throat problems,” he said.

“There is dispute about it, but it depends on which vet you speak to.”

John Greathouse said he’d sooner stay away from a horse with throat problems – “There’s horses I’ve gone out of my way to avoid that had breathing problems” – than one who’d raced on Lasix, because “I don’t know if we really know how many of these horses bled, and if they did, if they pass it on.” In the US-as opposed the South African study that classified bleeders as only those showing epistaxis--a horse can be declared a bleeder and race on Lasix with only specks of blood in the lungs as viewed from an endoscopic examination.

For his latest stallion, Phillips journeyed to Australia to shuttle Arrowfield’s All American, a son of the Roberto horse Red Ransom.

it’s not permitted to race for three months, and if it bleeds again after the rest period, it’s banned from racing for life.

“When I went to Australia, I spoke to the trainer [David Hayes] and made sure All American hadn’t had any history of bleeding and inquired about his wind,” said Phillips, whose venture is historic as All American is the first to reverse shuttle from Australia to the US. “The Roberto line has a propensity for soundness,” Phillips noted, and he expected US commercial breeders to embrace All American.

Though he checked all the boxes for soundness of limbs, lungs, and throat, All American wasn’t commercially popular in the US in his first season here despite having a pedigree with Kentucky Derby winner Gato del Sol under his third dam and promising Lane’s End sire Rock Hard Ten (by the Roberto horse Kris S.) under his Mr. Prospector second dam.

Ironically, Australian commercial breeders, who breed for a market with strict attitudes to EIPH and race-day Lasix, have embraced a horse that’s entering stud in a few months that was actually banned from racing after bleeding through the nostrils twice.

The horse is Group winner Rothesay, a son of Fastnet Rock who’d been slated for a USbased campaign similar to the one undertaken by the Australian sprinter Scenic Blast after that horse had bled in Hong Kong. Glenlogan Park Stud, however, purchased Rothesay to stand at stud and industry press reports indicate that Australian breeders are lining up to breed to him. They apparently don’t believe

the notion that bleeders sire bleeders as espoused in the South African study.

“When I first started off training thoroughbreds, there’d be whispers that this horse or that one had breathing problems and you got to watch certain sires because they sired bleeders,” said trainer Bob Baffert, who believes that Lasix is useful and shouldn’t be done away with as a race-day medication, but he says it isn’t a cure-all, either. “Lasix doesn’t move a horse up ten lengths, and it can dull a horse, too. I use it more as a preventive medication, and I’d rather see stuff like Clenbuterol go before Lasix,” he said.

“Silver Charm bled in the trachea, not through the nostrils, but none of his offspring ever bled. They couldn’t run, either, though,” Baffert quipped, indicating a relationship between talent and bleeding. He noted that there’s a prominent Kentucky-based stallion that sires top-quality horses and a fair amount of bleeders among them, too. “I’ve had more bleeders with him than any other sire,” he said. “He wouldn’t do as well without Lasix.”

Greathouse said his experience had been that better horses tend to have the potential to bleed more because they run faster. “I was reading Andy Beyer writing about how sound Mongolian horses were, and I was screaming while reading, ‘Andy, they don’t run fast enough to hurt themselves or to bleed,’” Greathouse said.

Agendas aside, the 2004 South African study may have established a link between EIPH and heritability, but even its authors suggest more follow-up is necessary. And

ultimately the study doesn’t calibrate for quality of horse and sire while establishing what it says is a link, and it doesn’t account for a number of other factors, such as for the changes in the South African racing landscape from stamina to speed, or for increases in competition and horse population, that took place before and during the years of the study and may have contributed to a trending rise in EIPH. And practically speaking, there are a number of issues that could affect breeding decisions aside from EIPH alone, such as breathing, conformation, temperament, pedigree, and race record that don’t require the Draconian actions suggested by the study.

For example, the year that Al Mufti was second in the Rothman’s July, the imported Northern Dancer horse Rakeen was third.

Rakeen sired the top-class racehorse Jet Master, also a champion sire with Pocket Power, JJ the Jet Plane, and River Jetez among an array of stars. As noted earlier, Jet Master’s percentage of starters to foals of racing age is significantly lower than Al Mufti’s figure, and perhaps there’s a link to Jet Master’s own racing history?

The horse, it’s widely known, was plagued with serious breathing issues that required several surgeries to maintain, and he was kept to distances of under a mile to manage his breathing. Would anyone now suggest not breeding to this home-grown sensation because he’d required several tie-back procedures when he was on the track and now sires a low percentage of runners to foals?

Not with the type of stakes winners he gets. n

Paul Deegan bright start, shining future Paul Deegan probably wouldn’t see himself as fearless, it’s just a natural trait he has in abundance. He sees the goals ahead and isn’t deterred by the obstacles. Fortunately he has arrived at more goalposts than obstacles in his life, but that’s more due to his innate confidence and ability to just plough on than it is to luck.

is grounding in the art of training racehorses is exemplary. “I grew up on a dairy farm and Dad was always into horses, keeping a few point-to-pointers and hunters,” Deegan says. “I always wanted to be a trainer and even though I was never sure I’d be lucky enough to be one, I wanted experience in every aspect of the business.” He began at the age of twelve, working for Victor Bowens, Fran Flood, and Jessica Harrington during school holidays, before going to college to study Equine Studies.

After a spell in the States, he returned to Ireland to work at Gerrardstown Stud, before joining Mick Channon as Pupil Assistant.

“I spent six years with Mick Channon,” Paul says, “three years as pupil assistant when Mark Wallace was assistant then, when Mark set up on his own, three years as assistant. It was a terrific place to be. I’m very lucky to have worked with such good trainers.” Luck seemed to be on his side again when he was offered a job back in Ireland, to train for a couple of men, one of whom was a builder. But within three months his good fortune had turned to bad.

The recession was starting in Ireland and the building trade was the first to be hit.

“The bite was just about to hit,” Paul explains, “and after just two months the job was gone. We didn’t know what to do. Our son was just eight weeks old. So we got in the car and

just drove round the Curragh, looking for somewhere suitable to set up ourselves. We rented a yard in Pollardstown and started with just four horses.”

Wife Kate was, and still is, a huge help and an invaluable member of the team at Clifton Lodge, where she manages the office. “Kate’s like myself; she grew up with horses and spent a couple of years as pupil assistant to Nicky Henderson, then James Fanshawe,” Deegan says.

Even with two very like-minds, it was nevertheless a brave decision to go it alone with so few horses. “You just get on and do what you need to, it had to be done,” Paul shrugs. The idea of him being deterred by anything is inconceivable. “We were very lucky, one of those four horses was the really good mare Ghostmilk. She was a really genuine horse, so tough and reliable, just the type you need.”

Deegan says he’d rather have a genuine bad horse than an ungenuine good one, and he was certainly blessed in his first seasons.

His first runner, in July 2006, was Dream Eile, who went on to claim some prize money at Wolverhampton later that month, while Ghostmilk secured runner-up spot in a Sligo maiden, an early sign that there were winners to come. With a modest fifteen individual runners in his first full season, Fereeji provided Deegan with his first win in June 2007 at Cork, and Ghostmilk and Croi Mo Ri each added to the tally, with plenty of placed efforts in between.

“The worry was I’d been out of Ireland so

long,” Deegan admits, “but you’ve got to get yourself out there, get to the sales, and try to find value for money. I always try to look for a nice individual at the right price. There might be a few bits wrong with it that would turn an agent off, but I wouldn’t be too worried by that, just as long as it looks like a racehorse.”

Nearly everything in Deegan’s yard looked and behaved like a racehorse in 2008, stalwarts Ghostmilk, Croi Mo Ri, Fereeji and High Court Drama joining newcomers Daffodil Walk and Le Citadel on the winners’ list, claiming twelve races between them. Not surprisingly, Deegan attracted the attention of several new owners, including Jaber Abdullah and Mark Gittins among them.

They were both quickly repaid for their faith when Gittins’ Lady Springbank provided the yard with its first Group winner first time out in the C.L. Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh, and Abdullah’s Dream Deer notched a valuable double. Deegan ended the season with ten individual winners, with Celtic Soprano, one of his favourite horses, winning three and raising her rating from 52 to 96. With neither Lady Springbank nor Celtic Soprano getting in foal this season, he is looking forward to having them back in training.

Deegan got off to a flying start last year, moving to Clifton Lodge stables, Ballysax, and winning the Irish Lincolnshire with Big Robert and the Leopardstown One Thousand Guineas Trial Stakes with Lady Springbank, among his

PAUL DEEGAN fifteen individual winners. Possibly the highlight came in the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Stakes, worth €75,000 to the winner.

Stand to Attention had been bought by Deegan for just €2,000 and raced in the colours of the YITBA, a racing club run free of charge for members of the Young Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. While Deegan is an ardent supporter of the YITBA, even he couldn’t have hoped to give its members their finest day, as they led their bargain buy into the Fairyhouse winners’ enclosure. Stand to Attention was later sold for a significant sum to race in Hong Kong.

Trading horses is very much a part of business and Deegan admits, “at our scale, training just doesn’t make money. We have to trade.” He sees himself as a horse dealer and buys on spec at the sales, often running horses in his own colours until he finds a buyer. The key to his success throughout has been his courage in his own convictions. “There’s a great international market at the moment,” he says.

“They don’t have to be superstars, just a good progressive sort with one or two wins. We’ve sold horses to Hungary, Croatia, Israel, and Hong Kong. There are big markets emerging in China and Australia.”

Deegan isn’t averse to travelling with horses himself, and took several over to Dubai the winter before last, but he now realises they probably weren’t the right type. “The right horse for Dubai is a lightly-raced progressive type rated about 96 or 97. It could win a handicap or two and when you win a handicap it’s worth around £80,000 – that’s your whole year paid for.”

It seems from Deegan that the key requirements for becoming a trainer are courage and faith, but he laughs and offers only one necessity – “Mad!” In seriousness he admits, “I’d never do those first two years again. They were hard, hard on the people around you. Winning becomes the only thing that matters.” Like everyone in the business, he found cash flow the biggest problem, but says it’s better now than it used to be. “We’ve good clients and there are not as many messers around. The recession weeded a lot of them out.”

As well as good clients, Deegan couldn’t wish for better facilities and is a big fan of the Curragh training grounds. Having started on Racecourse Side and now being based on Maddenstown Side he says, “There’s something for every horse. The Curragh offers brilliant facilities, top class. The Bush Gallop rides very well for two-year-olds, even when the ground’s soft. When we start to up our work we move over to Walshe’s Hill, and we do our everyday stuff on the woodchip. We’ve also access to two equine swimming pools and hydrotherapy.”

Deegan feels the latest technological innovations play their part in helping horses “to get over the niggly little problems quicker.”

Facilities are only half the battle and Deegan concedes, “Every horse has you tea ring your hair out; there’s no exact science. You’re always questioning what you’re doing with a horse and

I’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked for some great trainers and the main thing is to learn how to make it work, and assess each horse individually. It’s a matter of giving them the right amount of work. When you work with great people you get a level of confidence.

When they’re fit, you have the confidence to leave them alone.”

Deegan is very much helped in this by a great team of staff. “You’re trying to find out as much about a horse as you can, so work riders are important, you know they’re doing exactly as asked and they’re consistent. We have a great team and have had all the way through.”

When it comes to the sales, Deegan thinks it’s going to be harder to buy this year. “When the recession first started to bite, someone said the price of a Bentley won’t change but the price of a Mini will. The really good horses are still making money and there are a lot of people buying them. The bottom end is weak. The sales were very good last year and I think they’ll carry through, particularly next year, with the reduction in foals. There’s still plenty of value.

It’s a good time to be buying.” His preference for yearlings is a big scopey sort, “the type that can go on at 7f to a mile at two. The racing here is so competitive, in the maidens you’re going to be coming up against the bigger stables and stoutly-bred horses. I like a bit of size and

scope, because when you’re trading you need a horse that can go on.”

Deegan doesn’t seem the type to be too easily frustrated and he couldn’t be better suited for his vocation in life. Yet one thing that does frustrate him is the lack of races in Ireland.

“There’s not enough racing and it’s far too competitive,” he complains. “Mixed meetings are a big expense for everyone, even the big boys are going there with just one or two runners.

“We’ve done so much damage to racing.

During the good times we pushed owners out of the system by pushing their horses out of the system. We were telling owners their horses didn’t have the right to run because they weren’t deemed good enough. There will always be bad horses and we need to cater for them. They should still have opportunities to run. When I started out I had two-year-olds rated 52 or 55, but now every two-year-old is rated 72-75. This conscious effort to reduce the number of horses has had a negative effect. The Racing For Change nonsense, that’s just bulls**t. Just look after the people you already have.”

That’s a motto Deegan certainly lives by and he’s doing a great deal to also look after the people he may have in the future. He’s to the fore of Irish trainers when it comes to helping to market and promote the industry. As well as providing Stand to Attention for the YITBA he also allowed them to race the aptly-named Future Impact and actively encourages stable visits from the many hundreds of keen young owners. Young people can join the ITBA for just €10 and avail of full membership benefits, as well as sharing in the ownership of the YITBA Club horses.

“The way I like to operate is, the gates are always open here and the more people who come to see us the better,” he says. “The YITBA rang round a few trainers to ask if we’d be interested and I was very keen to get involved, it’s a great idea. The success of Stand to Attention was more than we could have hoped for. It teaches the kids that these things are possible. Sometimes the plans do come off. It’s given them a taste for winning and is a great way of promoting the sport.”

Deegan also hosts group visits from the ITBA and Tote Go Racing Club, taking visitors out on the gallops to watch the horses work and allowing them to meet the horses in the stables and turnout paddocks. A relatively recent innovation from the Irish Tourist Board is The Thoroughbred Trail, where tourists are offered two night’s luxury hotel accommodation, an escorted day at the races, and a visit to a racing yard. With racing professionals such as Frances Crowley to escort the group, tourists with no previous knowledge of racing are being introduced to the sport at the highest level of interest and predictably Clifton Lodge is one of those to throw open its gates in welcome.

Paul Deegan is certainly a trainer on the rise and Irish racing has a positive future thanks to his positive outlook. n

What we learnt from the Equine Science Society Whilst the wheels turn slowly in the world of equine nutrition research, the annual or biannual nutrition conferences usually present some interesting work that either stimulates some new thoughts, or helps refute some previously held beliefs. The Equine Science Society holds an annual conference in the USA, which is a good sounding board for much that is new in the world of equine nutrition. This article has handpicked those presentations of interest and relevance to racehorse trainers and their associates as discussed on 30-31 May in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Traditional sources of calcium may suffice The traditional source of calcium in a racehorse ration is usually either from a natural source such as alfalfa and/or from minerals added to fortified feeds in the form of calcium carbonate (limestone), or occasionally calcium gluconate.

Calcium is of great relevance to horses in training due to its impact on bone strength

and density and also its intimate involvement in muscle function. Any ingredients therefore that offer a potential improvement in the availability of calcium may be of interest.

Researchers from Texas A&M (Douglas-Fuller et al 2011) presented work on the effectiveness of an organic or chelated source of calcium and/or magnesium in the diet upon

parameters of bone density. Chelated mineral ingredients typically present the mineral, in this case calcium or magnesium, attached to an amino acid or protein fragment.

Despite 120 days of supplementation in this study, bone density measurements did not indicate any remarkable effect of calcium or magnesium proteinates.

Protein intake – how much is too much and when is best to feed relative to exercise?

The importance of a good supply of dietary amino acids to promote muscle protein synthesis and limit muscle protein breakdown in horses in training is reflected in the relatively high protein content of most racing rations.

However, when is the best time to feed protein-rich concentrates relative to exercise?

Researchers in Bristol, Virginia, USA, investigated how to ensure that the plasma pool of amino acids is well primed to support muscle protein synthesis. They researchers found that feeding horses with protein-rich concentrate feed within 1 hour of exercise ensured that the plasma amino acid pool was primed for 2-3 hours postexercise. Previous work has established that this 2-3 hour period is important for post-exercise muscle protein synthesis in horses.

Whilst a protein-enriched ration is important for horses in training, the potential negative effects must also be considered. When more protein is provided than is needed, the excess must be reprocessed and then the residual nitrogen excreted from the body.

The nitrogen-containing compound ammonia, which is a respiratory irritant, can be lost from the body in the urine, faeces, and also, perhaps surprisingly, in sweat. Increased loss of nitrogen in this way is an issue for horses as it can contaminate water, possibly leading to reduced water intake, but can also reduce the air quality of stables, which may affect respiratory health. It is generally accepted that some racing rations may oversupply protein and so researchers from Rutgers University investigated the impact of overfeeding protein on water and air quality in the stable environment.

The result of overfeeding protein by nearly 50% was that nitrogen and ammonia loss in faeces was increased and air quality was reduced due to an increased level of ammonia present. Blood urea nitrogen was also significantly higher in those horses on the high protein diet. These results from this study confirm the belief that we should be meeting the protein need of a horse in training but not exceeding it greatly. However, this then leads to the question of how we practically assess whether a ration is acceptable, or too high in protein. In the first instance a simple ration evaluation can help, but this gives limited information regarding how an individual horse handles the protein content of their diet. Smelly urine can also sometimes be an indication that protein intake is too high. A simple blood parameter that can also be used is the ratio of blood urea nitrogen (BUN, mg/dl) to creatinine (mg/dl). Ideally this parameter should fall between 10-15:1, but will be greater than this if protein intake is too, or less than this if protein intake is inadequate.

Fit not Fat for inflammation The importance of body condition score for horses in training has long been appreciated by racehorse trainers.

The most often cited argument on why overweight horses don’t race well is one of biomechanics and energetic. In other words, overweight horses place greater stress on their joints and also expend more energy moving at speed. However, there may also be some further hidden justification for trimming back the quantity of concentrate feed to achieve optimum body condition for racing.

Previous research in humans and dogs has shown that obesity is linked to an increase in the circulating level of substances that promote inflammation (proinflammatory cytokines). Obesity in humans is associated with a low-grade but generalised

inflammatory state within the body.

The increase in the level of inflammatory substances with obesity is also now thought to be a factor that hastens the progression of osteoarthritis, by promoting synovial inflammation and increasing the activity of cartilage-degrading enzymes. Researchers at Virginia Tech and Michigan State University (Suagee et al 2011) recently investigated whether obesity in horses also leads to a similar increase in inflammatory mediators.

Serum amyloid A, which increases acutely with inflammation or infection in horses, was correlated to body condition score.

However, other inflammatory proteins that have been observed to increase with obesity in humans were not increased relative to body condition score in horses.

Water holding and releasing capacity Last quarter in European Trainer we talked about the relevance of gut fill and the pros and cons of reducing forage in the hours prior to racing. Researchers from Michigan State and East Lansing University have recently presented data on the water holding capacity and water releasing capacity of different forage types and also on the effect on forage chop length.

There were a few surprises in the results.

Grass hay, which is a commonly used forage source for horses in training, not only had the highest potential water holding capacity in the gut, but also showed the greatest potential for the early release of this water. In contrast, alfalfa hay had the lowest water holding capacity, with sugar beet being intermediate.

For both grass and alfalfa hay, chop length had a significant effect on water holding and water releasing potential. Longer chopped forage (5mm) was more effective at holding water compared to shorter chopped forage (1mm) and also had a greater capacity for release of that water within the gut.

The relevance to racing of these findings is that although grass has the potential to hold more water in the hindgut it also gives up that water for absorption fairly easily to help offset dehydration. Alfalfa on the other hand holds less water in the hindgut in comparison and so offers a good option to influence gut fill without compromising fibre intake in the 72 hours before racing, although any changes to the diet should always be gradual.

Music to your horses’ ears It is often suggested that life in a racing environment can be stressful; however, I suspect that this will vary considerably between horses and between yards as there are many factors that affect how contented a horse is from day to day.

Any measure that can encourage horses to relax in their home environment is a benefit.

Whilst deviating slightly from my remit on nutrition, this next piece of research I feel is an interesting aside to wrap up with. Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia investigated the physiological and behavioural changes in horses exposed to relaxing music.

The music that was used in this study was the “Forest Gump” main theme tune and was played for six hours during the trial period.

The main result from this study was a substantially lower daily peak heart rate, as

well a reduced time over which heart was raised for a given stressful event within the yard routine. In terms of behaviour, the music encouraged more standing still and eating versus standing alert or walking. The conclusion to the study was that relaxing music was beneficial to horse welfare; however, I suspect there will be continued debate on the most appropriate form of music, with perhaps Vivaldi versus Lady Gaga being a future study.

As with all nutritional research initial results need to be viewed with caution until a consensus of opinion is reached on the likely outcome of a particular management change.

Equally, any changes to the diet should also be made slowly and where appropriate with advice from a veterinarian, nutrition advisor, or nutritionist.

Adaptogens and stomach ulcers Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) remains a serious problem in racehorses and other performance horses. Sometimes in obvious ways, but often in more insidious ways, it robs both horse and owner by compromising the horse’s appetite, feed efficiency, condition, comfort, and willingness to work. Were we to be able to accurately calculate it, the amount of money lost to this disease would probably be staggering.

meprazole paste has been a great leap forward in our ability to treat and prevent EGUS, particularly in horses who must remain in training. But there’s no denying that long-term treatment

with this drug is costly. Changes in diet, feeding schedules, housing, turnout, exercise, and other management factors are important and they help many of these horses. But the fact remains that strenuous exercise is a major contributing factor with EGUS, and it simply cannot be avoided in horses in race training.

Why are racehorses prone to ulcers?

Why galloping increases the risk for EGUS is still not fully understood, probably because it encompasses a number of different factors.

One of the most interesting factor involves an increase in pressure within the abdomen that occurs during exercise at any gait above a walk. When horses move, their abdominal

muscles contract to help support the back and pelvis, and perhaps also to limit movement of the intestines and other abdominal organs.

This muscle contraction increases the intraabdominal pressure, and the amount of pressure parallels the gait or speed at which the horse is moving, increasing from the walk to the trot to the gallop.

Not only is the pressure increased within the abdomen, but also within the stomach itself. Compression of the stomach persists until the horse slows to a walk. This pressure effect is thought to squeeze the highly acidic contents in the lower portion of the stomach up into the upper portion, where erosions are most commonly seen in horses.

In horses, this upper portion of the stomach – the squamous mucosa – is lined with several layers of flattened cells called squames, similar to the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). The lower portion of the stomach – the glandular mucosa – is similar to the human stomach and likewise contains the glands that secrete stomach

acid, digestive enzymes, and mucus. It is the upper, or squamous, portion of the stomach that is most prone to ulceration in horses. Ulcers do occur in the glandular portion, but they are seen most often in horses being given nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as phenylbutazone (“bute”).

The study, which showed pressure increases in the abdomen and stomach during exercise, also showed an increase in acidity in the upper portion of the stomach, which followed the same pattern of increasing with exercise intensity. Both pressures and acidity dropped again once the horse slowed to a walk.

Acid erosion is one of the primary factors involved in ulceration of the squamous portion of the stomach. At rest, the contents of the stomach remain somewhat layered as the horse eats. The food in the lower portion of the stomach is more acidic, as it is being mixed with stomach acid and enzymes and readied for passage to the small intestine. The contents in the upper portion of the stomach are less acidic, as they are awaiting their turn in the lower portion.

So, exercise does two potentially destructive things with regard to the squamous lining of the stomach: it mixes up the normally layered stomach contents and distributes acid and enzymes throughout; and it compresses these more acidic contents against the vulnerable upper portion of the stomach. The more intense the exercise session or the longer it lasts – and the more often it is repeated – the more acid erosion is likely to occur. We could add that exercise within about four hours of a meal, when acid secretion is at its peak, may further contribute to ulceration.

This effect also helps explain the high prevalence of gastric ulcers in standardbred racehorses, endurance horses, hunters/ jumpers, and in various other breeds and disciplines, and may be relevant to other species as well. For example, one study found that almost 50% of the dogs running the marathon Iditarod sled race in Alaska had gastric ulcers.

But that’s only one factor. Strenuous exercise also causes transient increases in stress hormones, changes in fluid and electrolyte balance, and a reduction in blood flow to the gut, all of which may slow the rate of cell turnover and repair in the stomach. In other words, the squamous cells that protect the upper portion of the stomach lining are replaced more slowly than normal, so any minor or intermittent acid erosion can accumulate over time, eventually resulting in ulceration. To make matters worse, the damage is repaired more slowly if the horse remains in training.

Those exercise-associated factors account for a good deal of the ulcer incidence in racing animals. But they don’t explain the

prevalence of gastric ulcers in broodmares (both pregnant and open) and foals, nor in livestock such as pigs and cattle. There is much more to this syndrome than exerciseinduced physiological changes.

Other physical and psychological factors shown to contribute to gastric ulcers include high-grain diets; intermittent feeding; periods of fasting; transport, especially over long distances; housing away from home; immaturity/inexperience; frequency of racing (i.e. intensity of the training and racing schedule); and temperament.

A study of gastric ulcers in show horses confirmed that horses with a nervous disposition were more likely to have ulcers than were calmer horses. The same very likely is true in racehorses. Although “stress” is one of those words that has been rendered almost meaningless through misapplication and

STOMACH ULCERS healthy, lean muscle mass is easier to maintain over the racing season l a good appetite and attitude are easier to maintain l increased resistance to illness and injury, including gastric ulcers l faster recovery from illness or injury, including gastric ulcers l increased resistance to overtraining; also, the horse is able to train more effectively and fitness is maintained more easily l exercise capacity (speed and stamina) is optimised without the use of stimulants; i.e. the horse is better able to perform to his potential Another possible benefit, provided by Rhaponticum in particular, is a positive effect on bone metabolism. Together with an increase in protein synthesis and lean muscle mass, this effect may help protect against, or speed recovery from, overload-induced bone damage such as bucked shins, chip or stress fractures, and sesamoiditis.

How simple plant extracts can do all that is a subject for another time, as it centres around a complex biochemical role of “molecular chaperone” in cell function, resistance, and repair. Adaptogens are among the most widely researched medicinal substances, with good safety profiles, extensive laboratory and clinical studies, and a long track record of use in human athletes. When used as part of a good management and training program, the adaptogens can help get and keep the hardworking horse performing well and going strong. l

Where to find them Most of the adaptogenic herbs listed above can be found singly or in various combinations wherever herbal products are sold for humans. However, for both safety and convenience, it’s usually best to stick with products that have been formulated specifically for horses, with good quality control and appropriate dosing instructions. overuse, it is nonetheless real – and can cause real problems.

How can adaptogens help?

This is where adaptogens come in.

Adaptogenic herbs can help with both the treatment and prevention of EGUS because they help moderate the stress response, increase the body’s overall resistance to the various physical and psychological stresses of athletic training and competition, and improve the rate of cell turnover and repair in bodies under stress. Some of these herbs, such as Aralia species, have even been shown to be as effective as the anti-ulcer drug cimetidine in treating and preventing gastric ulcers.

Many different herbs have adaptogenic properties. The most commonly used and extensively studied include:

Asian and American ginsengs (various Panax species) l Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus, aka eluthero; not actually a true ginseng) l rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea, aka rose root and arctic rose) l aralia (various Aralia species) l schizandra (Schisandra chinensis) l maral root (Rhaponticum or Leuzea carthamoides) Several of the medicinal mushrooms also have adaptogenic properties.

Tables 1 and 2 summarise the most common effects of the adaptogens that are particularly relevant in athletes. But the properties and potential of the adaptogens can be summed up even more simply: better cell function, repair, and resistance – of cells, organs, and the system as a whole.

The practical benefits for racehorses include: l

Final thoughts In closing, omeprazole or other veterinarianrecommended medication is usually the best way to go when ulcers are present. And while omeprazole may also be used at a reduced dosage for ongoing ulcer prevention, adaptogens are well worth considering for this role, too. Not only can they aid in ulcer prevention, they support the entire system under the stress of training and competition, increasing the horse’s resilience and thus his overall capacity to stay healthy and compete to the best of his ability. That makes the adaptogens both good medicine and good sense.

As always, it is a good idea to check with your supplier and veterinarian or local lab to be sure that you use these supplements in accordance with guidelines that won’t affect post-race tests. n

Therefore, to give a horse with tendon injury the best possible chance of making a successful recovery, a degree of safe exercise is important during the healing process. For this reason, a controlled and safe exercise regime for injured horses is essential.

Polytrack stages course for synthetic racetrack managers Polytrack inventor Martin Collins, who has surfaced 16 of the world’s 30 synthetic racecourses, recently hosted the first ever course for synthetic racetrack managers, with delegates from around the world.

The course included an inspection of 12 miles of his surfaces on the public training gallops at Newmarket, Kempton and Lingfield racecourses (where the first Polytrack racecourse reaches its 10th anniversary in November) and dormant Great Leighs, a fine example of “New Generation” Polytrack.

Topics discussed included: l Each track manager finds their own way of working with a surface to provide the ‘going’ that they require. Their regimes are influenced by climate, usage and surface components. l The importance of maintenance needs to be understood - it optimises performance, minimises injuries and protects the investment. l Martin Collins recommended a move away from “aggressive power harrowing” towards the use of a ‘field cultivator’ with arrow-head tines. This is kinder, extends the life of the surface and is used across the States to great effect. l In his fourth season at Kranji, Raju Jayaraju combines maintenance machinery, including Gallop Masters, together with occasional manual labour to return displaced Polytrack during racing. l Regular depth checks are paramount and ensure consistency. l Maintenance direction should alternate as drag machinery, particularly power harrows, will move the surface. An uphill gallop, for example, should have three passes uphill to each one down. l Synthetics must be maintained and ridden differently to sand and dirt. When mismanaged, over-compaction can easily occur just a few inches down, resulting in an unsuitable ‘going’. l Organic matter will degrade the coating of the surface and manure will draw moisture and then freeze. Wheel washes will minimise contamination from machinery. l Top-ups and re-waxes can extend the lifespan of a surface. Martin Collins uses a spray bar pointing straight into the material, followed by a rotovator and power harrowing, on a warm surface. l Martin Collins now offers the option of a maintenance contract.

The course was coordinated by Malcolm Wallace, the International Racing Consultant to Martin Collins Enterprises, who said: “The primary aim was to assist overseas track and gallops managers to prepare and maintain their surfaces.

However, we also wanted to get to know them better as that in turn helps us with our aftercare service.”

Recent climate conditions and increased mycotoxin risk Each harvest season seems to bring a variety of challenges that horse owners and farmers need to address. Moulds or fungi and their associated mycotoxins are present on all crops in varying amounts each year, depending on the climatic growing conditions.

Cool wet climatic conditions during the harvest season for grain and hay crops increases the likelihood that moulds and fungi such as Fusarium and Aspergillus can grow in or on these plants.

The Fusarium species can also grow on grasses used for horse pastures. When there is high precipitation during seed-head formation, high concentrations of Fusarium and its associated mycotoxins are common. The Aspergillus mould, along with Fusarium, is one of the main producers of mycotoxins.

How mycotoxins are produced Mould or fungal infestation of grain and forage plants usually begins pre-harvest. This is greatly influenced by weather conditions and is difficult to control. Mould growth can be compounded by improper storage post-harvest. The presence of mould on feed can reduce the nutritional status by up to 10%.

Under certain conditions, these moulds are able to produce mycotoxins. These compounds are often produced in an attempt to ward off other organisms that might feed on the mould or to clear an area nearby to allow the mould room for growth. Moulds must be present to produce mycotoxins, but once produced, the mycotoxin can remain in the environment with no mould present.

Absence of mould, therefore, does not mean absence of mycotoxin.

What are mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins produced by moulds or fungi can affect various animals upon ingestion or inhalation and can cause a wide variety of adverse clinical conditions. The condition and degree of adversity varies and depends on the nature and concentration of the toxin or toxins present, duration of exposure, species, age, as well as the nutritional and health status of the animal.

It is important to understand that almost always more than one mycotoxin is present in contaminated food. This co-occurrence of various mycotoxins leads to synergistic effects and to more pronounced health effects. Whilst recognizing that mycotoxins can have significant health effects it is also worth remembering that toxins may be ingested in low levels on a regular basis with no ill effect as these are naturally occurring.

Ingesting feedstuffs containing mycotoxins Upon ingestion, horses seem to be very sensitive to a range of mycotoxins, which can occur in cereals, and other feed material used in horse diets. Horses are prone to the effects of these mycotoxins due to the fact that they do not have a “defence mechanism” such as the rumen in the cow, the primary section of a cow’s stomach. The microbial flora in the cow’s ru men degrades and deactivates many

mycotoxins effectively into non-toxic substances. The gastric juices of the horse’s stomach do little to deactivate mycotoxins, thus they pass from the stomach into the small intestine where they may affect the gut wall or be absorbed into the blood stream.

The effects of mycotoxins in horses can be amplified by performance and production stresses. Horses in training and competition, breeding mares and stallions, and rapidly growing foals are more susceptible to mycotoxins than horses used for less rigorous recreational riding or just being stabled.

How is the horse affected?

Mycotoxins have been implicated in a variety of health problems including colic, neurological disorders, abnormal liver function, hypersensitivity, and brain lesions. Long term exposure of horses to low levels of mycotoxins may result in immune suppression, reduced growth rate, impaired feed conversion, mare fertility problems, frequent respiratory problems, reduced performance, and higher incidence of laminitis. In most cases these problems are considered to be caused by reasons other than mycotoxins. Hence, mycotoxins often are not recognized as a trigger or an important cofactor in the incidence of these conditions.

In which feedstuffs do mycotoxins occur?

Mycotoxins can be found in nearly all agricultural commodities, such as cereals (maize, wheat, oats and barley) and cereal byproducts and in forages such as hay, grass and haylage.

Another risk factor for mycotoxins can be bedding material such as straw. The occurrence of mycotoxin producing mould in straw may be caused by the presence of mould in the grain. Since many horses consume their straw bedding, the risk that horses take up significant levels of mycotoxins rises.

Controlling mycotoxin exposure Mycotoxins are impossible to get rid of once formed and few effective strategies to eliminate them have been identified.

Controlling exposure of horses to mycotoxins begins by controlling moisture and mould growth during harvesting and processing of cereals and forages right through to their storage and feeding. Horse owners should only buy feed and forages from reputable manufacturers or dealers that have strived to keep mould and mycotoxin contamination to a minimum.

Conclusion Moulds and mycotoxins are naturally occurring and have always been in existence. Horses have co-existed in their presence forever and will continue to do so. Minimising exposure involves minimising development of moulds and mycotoxins in feedstuffs and forages, not only at harvest and manufacture, but also right through to storage and feeding. The onus on managing their development is on both feed manufacturer and horse owner alike.

Taking the idea of electric fencing to the stable, it works in a far less aggressive way but with immediate results. Based on “negative reinforcement” which should not be confused with punishment, it allows the horse to associate that its action alone creates the negative feedback.

The rubber pad which measures 58cm x 58cm is equipped with an aluminium rail for fixing to the door or wall and is installed in the stable where the horse kicks. After it has been fitted, the rubber pad is connected to an energiser which delivers a weak pulse through the pad. When the horse kicks the pad it will feel a small electrical impulse corresponding to around 40% of the strength emitted from a conventional electric fence unit. The current is then disconnected, but by leaving the pad in place, the horse associates it with a place not to touch and only needs to be reconnected if the horse starts banging again and needs a quick reminder.

Much research has gone into the strength of current that is acceptable. It would be no good frightening the horse with a really strong “zap” that would then make him feel

very uncomfortable being in the stable. There had to be a balance to ensure the horse’s sense of security and comfort whilst producing the desired effect of eliminating the stable banging.

Having been fully trialled for the last two years with great success in professional competition yards in Denmark and Germany and developed in conjunction with vets and with the approval of the Danish Animal Protection Counsel, this provides an effective and unique solution to a frustrating stable problem.

CLOSING DATES

Closing dates for all Irish races are set for international entry dates. For certain races, Irish trained horses, may be able to enter after the published dates. Please check dates with the relevant issue of The Racing Calendar.

All main French races have been given an eight day closing date with provincial races set to a ten day closing

date. The Italian authority (UNIRE) do not publish closing dates for Listed races but we have been advised to set each race closing date ten days in advance of the race.
