A brief history

In 1991, we invited the world to share our dream of expanding Africa’s green frontier by developing and sustaining wildlife sanctuaries across the continent.

&Beyond is co-founded by a group of passionate conservationists, then under the name of Conservation Corporation Africa (CC Africa). The creation of Phinda Private Game Reserve and opening of Phinda Mountain Lodge marked our beginning.

Wild Impact, previously known as Africa Foundation, is founded to uplift, up-skill and empower communities living close to core conservation areas where we have a footprint.

Our portfolio of leading safari lodges expands into Africa, including Kenya, Zimbabwe and Tanzania – and later Botswana and Namibia.

The acquisition of two major travel outfits – Afro Ventures and Into Africa – combines the strength of our lodge portfolio with a tour operation and travel service to form one of Africa’s most comprehensive tourism companies.

Our touring expertise extends into India with growth in the sub-continent taking us to Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal.

Pioneering land settlement; 9 032 hectares (22 318 acres) returned to Makhasa and Mnqobokazi communities. Going forward, &Beyond leases this land from the community.

CC Africa rebrands to &Beyond to reflect our global footprint.

South America is proudly added to the portfolio, including Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador.

Chile’s Lake District sees the opening of our first lodge in South America, &Beyond Vira Vira. &Beyond Punakha River Lodge in the last great Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan opens as our first lodge in Asia.

We welcome our first-ever luxury expedition yacht to the family, &Beyond Galapagos Explorer in the Galapagos Islands.

PHINDA – MEANING ‘THE RETURN’ IN ZULU Derived from the Zulu phrase Phinda izilwane, which translates to “return of wildlife” or, more accurately, “do again” - it is only fitting that our first private game reserve embodied this sacred notion.

Our beginning IT ALL STARTED WITH PHINDA The expansion of &Beyond’s vision began with an ambitious project in the early 1990s in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve has since become the most compelling realisation of our dream of achieving sustainable conservation through responsible tourism.

Restoring Phinda’s pineapple, cattle and sisal farming monoculture to its natural splendour was no small feat. Driven by the firm belief that this neglected land could be rejuvenated and once again teem with the Big Five wildlife that had long been forgotten, it was purchased by our founders. The rest is conservation history.

Along with restoration of the land and reintroduction of the wildlife, the Phinda story is about people and ensuring that the surrounding communities benefit economically from the reserve’s presence. This led to the establishment of our long-standing community and development partner, Wild Impact.

Vision 2030

Our 2030 Vision In the 30 years since our impact story began with our ambitious project to return Phinda Private Game Reserve to its natural state, our world’s total wilderness areas have shrunk by a further 10 percent, while its human population has increased by a staggering 44 percent. This rampant cycle of human expansion and resultant natural decline is putting enormous pressure on endangered species and the people that share their land.

Rural communities bordering reserves are experiencing increased raids on their livestock and crops by desperate animals in search of water and food, especially in times of drought that are becoming more frequent and unpredictable in so many areas.

With the massive habitat encroachment vulnerable species are experiencing due to population growth and its demands on natural resources, at least 300 000 species have become extinct in the same 30-year period, while only 28 critically endangered species are known to have been saved from the brink of extinction. Our world is in trouble – and the problem is more urgent than ever.

Over the next decade leading up to 2030, &Beyond, in partnership with Wild Impact, have made the decision to double our impact to leave our world a better place.

Our impact investment per bed night is made up of a direct contribution we make, the park fees we enable through our guests and funds donated through Wild Impact. Our target is to double our

total impact investment in our primary and secondary conservation areas as well as in the sustainable development of our partner communities.

Our primary conservation areas are the wilderness areas where we operate lodges and camps on concessions and game reserves. Our targeted presence across 1 million acres automatically ensures that they are not subject to habitat loss, and we are able to actively protect vulnerable flora, fauna and habitats through careful and considered custodianship. In many cases, these primary conservation areas border on neighbouring land where, through partnership with its operators, we are able to dramatically increase the opportunity for species that rely on a larger range of movement.

When we refer to secondary conservation areas, this means land where we support a larger ecosystem by contributing substantive financial resources through park entry or traverse fees, providing consistent financial resource and advisory contribution to projects, as well as active participation by the &Beyond and Wild Impact teams in relevant conservation boards or advisory structures. By 2030, we aim to support 40 million acres of wilderness in Africa, Asia and South America.

In each of our landscapes and seascapes we have identified partner communities.

From the beginning, we have known that, in order for the world’s precious places to survive, they have to be economically relevant to their stakeholders.

We’re doubling our impact over the next 10 years to leave our world a better place.

Partnering for a better world &Beyond and Wild Impact have worked hand in hand since 1992 on community and conservation development opportunities that leave our world a better place. To scale our investment in community partnerships and the 40 million acres of conservancy we will indirectly influence, we will leverage our mutual strengths and expertise with a refined focus.

Our impact partnership’s core methodology is to work with communities rather than for them. This approach has built a 30-year legacy of community-led development, in close collaboration with local government structures and the private sector. We believe that for conservation to thrive, our partner communities need to share the benefits of conservation through meaningful projects that build community capacity and resilience.

As an independent, tax-exempt, non-profit organisation registered in South Africa, USA and the United Kingdom, Wild Impact funds initiatives that are defined by community needs, helps scope and manage the projects, as well as providing detailed reporting on progress and status to its donors. &Beyond supports a significant portion of Wild Impact’s core costs, amplifying the reach of each guest donation.

As &Beyond and Wild Impact drive the momentum required to achieve our Vision 2030 goals across Africa, Asia and South America, our shared values - care of land, wildlife and people - will continue to expand through a framework of four key focus areas: Conserving Ecosystems, Future Foundations, Tomorrow’s Leaders and Thriving Communities.

The outcome for each focus area will be enabled by a collective portfolio of investment and regional projects.

PANGOLIN REINTRODUCTION In a collaboration between &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve and the African Pangolin Working Group, this watershed project is reintroducing the Temminck’s ground pangolin to a region where it has been locally extinct for decades.

COASTLINE AND REEF CONSERVATION Over 7 000 coral colonies, sourced from the Oceans Without Borders Mnemba Island House Reef coral nursery, are regenerating degraded sections of local reefs and establishing a thriving new artificial reef habitat.
