Sanlorenzo premieres three new models at Cannes Yachting Festival 2025
Confirming its status as the leading Italian shipyard, Sanlorenzo is premiering three incredible new Sanlorenzo models at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival – one from its groundbreaking SX ‘crossover’ Series, one from its pioneering Asymmetric series, and one from its timeless SD Series.
Sanlorenzo SX120
As the new flagship of Sanlorenzo’s SX Series, the 36.92-metre SX120 embodies the brand’s dedication to combining luxury, sustainability and innovation.
A first for Sanlorenzo, the SX120 is also the first superyacht to feature Volvo Penta’s IPS Professional Platform – a state-of-the-art propulsion system that enhances efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 30%.
Beyond its sustainable propulsion, the smaller footprint of the IPS system enables a new standout feature: an expansive beach club with fold-down sides that houses a fully glassed swimming pool. Designed with versatility in mind,
the pool can be discreetly concealed beneath a sliding sunpad when not in use.
With an internal volume of 265GT, the SX120 emphasises seamless indoor-outdoor living and generous social areas. A drop-down transom creates a fluid connection to the sea, linking entertainment and relaxation zones and encouraging multigenerational enjoyment on board.
The yacht accommodates up to ten guests across five fully customisable suites and offers quarters for five crew members in three cabins. Adding to its appeal, the SX120 introduces another first for the SX Series: a flybridge sundeck accessed via its own dedicated stairway, ensuring complete privacy for guests.

Sanlorenzo SL110A
The latest addition to Sanlorenzo’s popular SL Series, the SL110A incorporates the shipyard’s bold Asymmetric approach, which reimagines traditional yacht design by raising the port side deck to a higher level.
This innovative layout significantly increases the interior volume to approximately 235 GT and strengthens the connection to the sea, with floorto-ceiling windows and side-opening doors that lead to a spacious drop-down side terrace.
This widebody concept enhances onboard living, allowing the SL110A to accommodate ten guests across five generous cabins. Among them is an expansive, light-filled full-beam owner’s cabin, which offers stunning 270-degree views through the fullbeam and side window.
From the owner’s suite, a private entrance provides discreet access to the jacuzzi, which connects via steps to the vast and fully customisable foredeck. This forward outdoor entertainment area is outfitted with large sunpads and an integrated seating arrangement, complete with ample table space for drinks or casual dining.
At the stern, the next-generation transom features a garage designed to house both a tender and a jetski. The flush transom includes hidden folding stairs and transforms into a spacious bathing platform with easy steps up to the cockpit.
Both stunning yachts will be available to view by appointment only at the show.
sanlorenzoyachts.co.uk/SD132
Marking a significant step forward in onboard space, versatility, and long-range performance, Sanlorenzo has introduced the SD132, the new flagship of its SD (semi-displacement) Series.
Officially launched in April and making its show debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the 40.7-metre SD132 is the largest composite-built yacht the shipyard has ever produced.
With 420GT of internal volume, the SD132 sets itself apart through intelligent design that maximises the expansive interiors while preserving fluid, open spaces. The yacht incorporates Sanlorenzo’s pioneering asymmetrical layout – featuring a port-side walkway on the main deck and a starboard walkway on the upper deck – to enhance usable living space and improve circulation between decks.
One of the standout features is the 70-square-metre beach area, where lateral terraces fold out to expand the space and remove visual barriers, creating a seamless connection between the aft cockpit and the sea – all designed to invite relaxed outdoor living.
Above, the 85-square-metre fly deck offers panoramic views and multiple lounging zones. A forward living area includes a crystal-clear mini pool with an integrated sunbathing system, connecting visually and physically with the main deck’s social spaces.
In terms of storage and functionality, the SD132 offers a side-launching garage capable of accommodating a 6.25-metre tender – rare for yachts of this size. A forward hangar provides additional room for water toys or a rescue boat, adding to the yacht’s flexibility and readiness for extended multigenerational cruising.
Indoor spaces are equally well considered. The main deck hosts a 55-square-metre owner’s suite, offering privacy and incredible views, while the lower deck accommodates four beautifully appointed guest cabins and a fully equipped crew area. This remarkable yacht also features two salons: one on the main deck with expansive windows to flood the area with natural light, and a second on the upper deck for hosting more intimate gatherings.
Designed to deliver long-range cruising capability, the SD132 offers a range of 3,200 nautical miles, making it well-suited for transoceanic journeys. With its thoughtful layout, generous proportions, and oceangoing performance, the SD132 redefines expectations for semi-displacement yachts in this size range.

Sanlorenzo celebrates Italian craftmanship with a priceless musical masterpiece in London
Earlier this year an unprecedented celebration of classical music and artisan craftsmanship took place in central London.
Hosted by Sanlorenzo Yachts UK and Howden Private Clients at the Minotti London showroom, the evening brought together a distinguished audience for a rare and extraordinary performance.
A truly priceless musical interlude unfolded as two remarkable Stradivarius violins, in the hands of the world-renowned violinists Tomo Keller and Andrew Bernardi, played together for the first time. Crafted over three centuries ago by the legendary Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari, these historic instruments - though visually distinctdemonstrated their unparalleled ability to project with power and clarity, commanding the attention needed to be heard above the force of a full orchestra.
Set against Minotti’s exquisitely curated backdrop on Margaret Street, the intimate gathering was immersed in the exceptional tonal nuances and dynamic range that define these rare musical masterpieces.
Nick Hatfield, Managing Director at Sanlorenzo Yachts UK, reflected on the profound connection between Stradivari’s craftsmanship and Sanlorenzo’s legacy of yacht building:
“For over 60 years, Sanlorenzo has exemplified the finest Italian craftsmanship in luxury yacht building. Just as every Sanlorenzo yacht is a singular work of art, with its own story to tell, each Stradivarius violin is uniquely crafted, with a sound and character as distinctive as the instrument itself.”
With only 650 Stradivarius violins believed to exist today, these instruments are among the rarest in the world. Their preservation is paramount, yet their true essence is realised only through performance.
Charlie Jenkins, Head of Asset Finance at SPF Private Clients, Part of Howden, emphasised the delicate balance between preservation and use:
“Instruments of this calibre must not only be safeguarded - they should be played. The relationship between violin and violinist is symbiotic: the more an instrument is played, the more it develops its voice, enriching both its sound and the artist’s interpretation of the music.”
Despite their historical and artistic significance, Stradivarius violins remain financially out of reach for many of the world’s most gifted musicians. It is only through philanthropy and dedicated patronage that these rare instruments continue to grace the global stage - a challenge Howden is committed to addressing.
Jenkins unveiled a vision close to the heart of Howden as the leading insurance broker for fine instruments:
“We understand the profound impact that an instrument can have on a musician’s career. Our vision is to ensure that exceptional violins, like those played by Tomo and Andrew, are brought out of storage and placed in the hands of talented artists. Achieving this goal will require the support of philanthropists and investors, and we are confident that Howden, given our market position, can lead this initiative. Our aim is to ensure these instruments continue to inspire and transform the lives of the finest musicians of their generation.”
The evening at Minotti was more than a performance - it was a testament to the enduring legacy of craftsmanship, and the importance of preserving musical and artistic excellence for generations to come.
DISCOVER THE BLUEGAME BGF45: Innovation born from the America’s Cup
At this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, Bluegame, a brand of Sanlorenzo, will be unveiling its latest innovation – the BGF45.
A 45-foot foil-assisted power catamaran, the BGF45 radically redefines what a luxury sport utility yacht can be. Inspired by the BGH-HSV, Bluegame’s hydrogen-powered chase boat developed for the America’s Cup, the BGF45 is a giant leap into the future of sustainable yachting.
At its core, the BGF45 embodies Bluegame’s unwavering commitment to technological innovation and environmental responsibility. Its fixed foil system, mounted between the twin hulls, significantly enhances stability and hydrodynamic e ciency. The result? A yacht that glides e ortlessly across the water, reducing drag, boosting performance, and improving fuel economy - all without compromising on comfort.
The BGF45 delivers the full Bluegame experience - luxurious, spacious, and impeccably designed. Despite its compact footprint, it features up to three cabins, including a forward owner’s suite with a transverse double bed, a VIP cabin amidships to port, and a third cabin –ideal for a child or crew – accessed from the cockpit dinette.
Above deck, the BGF45 continues to impress. Walkaround decks, a generous open cockpit, and a deep-V hull design all serve one purpose: to o er thrilling on-water adventure while maintaining the comfort and elegance of refined Italian craftsmanship. Whether you’re island-hopping in the Mediterranean or chasing sunsets along the coast, the BGF45 delivers a smooth, stable ride with style to match.
The BGF45 is for those who live to explore – the bold few who see the sea not just as a destination, but as an invitation. More than a yacht – the BGF45 is a statement of intent.

The Prestige M7 boasts an impressive 200 square meters of living space, which is up to four times greater than that of a monohull motor yacht of comparable length. Designed by naval architect Marc Lombard, the deep bridge deck connects the two hulls, allowing the accommodation to extend across them and the tunnel in between. Various layouts are available, including a spacious full-beam owner’s cabin at the front, two roomy double ensuite cabins midships, a twin cabin with the option for a fourth bathroom, a double bunk crew cabin, and an additional single crew cabin located behind the port hull’s engine bay.
How economical is the Prestige M7? With two slender hulls and a naturally stable ride, the Prestige M7 glides through the sea with remarkable efficiency, resulting in up to 50% less fuel consumption than a comparablesized monohull. The M7 can achieve a range of 1,330 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 8 knots, with a fuel
consumption rate of just 2 litres per nautical mile, making it highly suitable for economical long-distance cruising. Additionally, Prestige offers an optional Long Stay Pack that further extends your cruising autonomy, enabling you to explore longer without the need to refuel.
What are your overall thoughts on the new Prestige M7?
We are thrilled to introduce the new Prestige M7 to our clients. This model features a multihull configuration that provides ample space and comfort, comparable to that of a 75-foot monohull yacht. which will be unveiled for the first time at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Additionally, you can view the brand new Lagoon 38 as she makes her UK debut at the Southampton Boat Show. We look forward to seeing you there!
If you appreciate a touch of retro charm, you will love Lagoon’s new ICONIC range. This new design embraces a bold eighties spirit while maintaining a contemporary edge, celebrating Lagoon’s 40-year heritage with a hint of Miami Vice flair.

The
Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s new Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, Kalooki, has been making life-changing waves since she was introduced in the last issue of The Ancasta Collection.
“If there wasn’t Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust support, I would still be navigating life and trying to work out how to accept it.”
When young people living through and beyond cancer take part in an Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust adventure, the sailing is just the vehicle. But it is the perfect vehicle to bring them together, make connections, reimagine what they can achieve after the trauma of cancer, and to set themselves up for a future that felt so out of reach.
And it helps when the boat they are on is specifically designed to ensure they are able to accomplish those things. That’s why Kalooki has been, to use Dame Ellen MacArthur’s words, such a ‘game-changer’.
It has been a summer to remember aboard the charity’s newest yacht, on which countless young lives have been transformed. Since being launched in March, Kalooki has sailed from the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s base on the Isle of Wight, including her first outing in the iconic Round the Island Race.
Working in partnership with Ancasta Group and Beneteau, the charity welcomed Kalooki thanks to the generosity of a gentleman who was an ardent sailor and enthusiastically supported the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust over many years.
Mentally and physically better
One young person who sailed on Kalooki is 17-year-old Phoebe from Hastings. In 2015, she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour, a type of kidney cancer, and had her right kidney removed.
She says her cancer impacts her more now, as she still has check-ups once a year. She can’t remember much of her treatment from when she was younger, but she can remember these regular appointments and the anxieties they bring.
She said: “Even though you’ve got the all-clear, it still affects you. It always will, no matter how old you are or how long you’ve been in remission.
The worry is always in the back of your mind. It’s okay to not be okay and sometimes it’s okay to have days where you’re really struggling with the fact you had cancer.
“It’s so important there is support after treatment because you go through a lot of confidence issues. Most people on an Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust trip won’t have someone back home who has experienced the same thing. So just being able to come together makes you feel so much better about yourself, mentally and physically, because you don’t feel alone. If there wasn’t this support, I would still be navigating life and trying to work out how to accept it.
“I really enjoy being able to sit up on front of the boat while we’re on the water, just rocking up and down. I think it’s so relaxing. And it feels like a privilege to sail on Kalooki!”
More opportunity
Everything about Kalooki is designed so young people feel they belong on board and can get the most out of their time sailing on her. She has five cabins, meaning more young people can join transformational trips. The cockpit and saloon have more space, so it is easier to move around and socialise, and there are extra handrails throughout for mobility and steadiness. The primary winches have been moved forwards to be more accessible, allowing young people to be more involved.
Jeremy Morris, the charity’s Operations Manager South, explained: “Kalooki has provided us with a level of flexibility we have not been able to offer in the south until now. Having the fifth cabin allows us to offer more spaces to more young people, increasing the capacity of our trips, while also providing more space on board for prayer or any young person who may need their own space.”
When Ammarah was 17, she joined her first sailing adventure with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, after undergoing treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma two years earlier. Now 23 she volunteers for the charity, and this year saw her take on the role of Mate on Kalooki.
Ammarah, who is from Walsall, says she has developed more self-belief, got out of her comfort zone, and become more comfortable socialising with new people through sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
She was excited to get her first taste of Kalooki: “Oh it’s really good. When you’ve got the sails up, you’re going faster than all the other boats! “There’s more room on board, lots of cabin space, which is helpful. What’s really useful is that everything is closer to the cockpit. The skipper and the crew can watch more easily while young people are tying knots and winching.”
The sun is setting on another summer of life-changing adventures. Almost 700 young people from all across the UK who were looking for somewhere to turn after cancer found their people. Whether they were on Kalooki or anywhere else with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, they are finding their footing and are more prepared for the start of their next chapter.
BETTER TOGETHER
Young people living through and beyond cancer need somewhere to turn, and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has to be there for them. You can be the reason a young person feels inspired to believe in their brighter future.

Offshore Racing:
Are You Ready for Offshore Racing’s Ultimate Trio this Winter?
For many sailors, offshore racing offers the perfect mix of challenge, camaraderie, and adventure travel. Among the most iconic events, the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the RORC Transatlantic Race, and the RORC Caribbean 600 provide the perfect circuit to keep you sailing through the offseason from the heart of the Mediterranean across the Atlantic, and around the islands of the Caribbean.
Here, our Race Boats Brand Manager, Sam Pearson, talks us through the highlights of each regatta.
Rolex Middle Sea Race
October
Starting and finishing in Valletta, Malta, the Middle Sea Race is a 606-nautical-mile offshore course with dramatic scenery that takes competitors around Sicily, through the Strait of Messina, past the volcanic island of Stromboli, and south around Lampedusa.
Under the watchful eye of Aeolus, the Greek god of winds, this challenging race is renowned for unpredictable weather, critical tidal gates, and formidable headlands. Crews may find themselves becalmed one minute and in a raging storm the next, so staying in sync with the elements and being ready for anything that the ocean throws at you is key to a successful race.
This is an adventure that’ll demand everything from you – sharp instincts, courage, teamwork, and resilience – but you’ll come away with some legendary stories to tell in the bar on your return!
RORC Transatlantic Race
January
Every January, a competitive fleet of offshore yachts sets sail from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, bound for Antigua in the Caribbean – a passage of over 3,000 nautical miles.
A transoceanic challenge that attracts both seasoned offshore racers on 70ft foiling trimarans to sub-40ft cruiser-racers, and first-time trans-Atlantic crews, the race usually benefits from reliable trade winds that treat sailors to lengthy stretches of fast, downwind sailing. However, as with any long-distance voyage, the ocean always delivers a few surprises, so good boat preparation, strategic routing, and coordinated team endurance are crucial aspects of the race.
Whether it’s your first transatlantic crossing or you’re chasing the thrill of flat-out racing for days on end, there’s no better way to reach the exotic shores of the Caribbean.
RORC Caribbean 600 February
Starting and finishing in Antigua, the RORC Caribbean 600 course weaves around 11 Caribbean islands, including Barbuda, St Maarten, Guadeloupe, and Montserrat. The scenery is phenomenal, with lush green mountains, palmlined sandy beaches, and exotic marine life around every rocky outcrop. The allure of glorious sunshine, turquoise waters, and locally made rum on tap draws crews from all over the world to compete in this iconic event.
Yet the RORC Caribbean 600 is widely regarded as one of the most challenging offshore races on the calendar. With brisk, shifty winds, large sea swells, and constantly changing angles, tactical manoeuvres and sail changes come thick and fast, so there’s little time for rest.
But don’t let this put you off – any hardship is duly rewarded with a warm welcome when you hit the dock: big smiles, steel drums, and ice-cold beers in the sunshine - what’s not to love?
Take on the Challenge
If you are ready to take on an epic season of offshore racing this winter that will take you on an unforgettable adventure from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, we can help you find the best race boat for you and your crew.

Hawkeye Circumnavigation Blog: Part II
A Family’s Voyage to Fiji and New Zealand
Imagine setting sail with your family on a once-in-a-lifetime voyage around the world aboard your own luxurious Lagoon 450. That’s exactly what this adventurous family has done. After exploring the Caribbean and crossing the vast Pacific, the Hawkeye crew immersed themselves in the beauty of New Zealand.
In the previous Ancasta Collection, we followed their inspiring journey from Tahiti to Tonga, where they discovered remote island paradises. Read on for part two, when they enjoy the delights of Fiji’s vibrant culture before taking on the legendary passage to New Zealand.
Fiji to New Zealand
We explored Tonga, but the draw of Fiji proved too strong, so we left for the three-day sail, navigating through the treacherous Fijian reefs. Here, we followed close to the path of Captain Bligh, who was thrown off HMS Bounty near Tonga. Captain Bligh managed to navigate his way through the entire Fijian archipelago using only a compass and sextant, an extraordinary feat.
We were met by officials from customs, immigration, health, port and biosecurity. After establishing that we didn’t have any prohibited products on board, such as pork or honey, they left, but not before they gave us something that we really didn’t want. Some days later, we both fell ill with COVID, so our initial exploration of Fiji had to be put on hold for the next week while we self-isolated and recovered. But Fiji – wow! Out of all the places we have seen in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific, Fiji is certainly the best cruising ground ever. The people aren’t just very welcoming and friendly, they also mostly seem happy in their lives, something that many in more developed countries could try to emulate.
Fiji has it all; crystal-clear, warm water, amazing snorkelling with plenty of fish, stunning anchorages, and lots of islands to explore; we were made to feel welcome wherever we went.
We joined in with Fiji’s famous Musket Cove Regatta Week, participating in everything from a pretty gruelling running race to a comprehensive beach clean-up where the sailors collected four tonnes of plastic. There were also plenty of regatta parties!
We entered Hawkeye in the regatta week’s highlight, the Round Malolo Race, borrowing two crew, Linda and Bill Hay, from another Lagoon catamaran. This was to be Hawkeye’s first race in 14 years since she was launched. Although we started at the back of the fleet (the only yacht with grey sails in the fleet photo), she clawed her way to overtake 11 yachts by the finish.
Lagoon 450 catamarans, like Hawkeye, are firmly positioned at the cruising end of the performance scale, and with all the world cruising
kit that we carry, she is heavier than most. But she does have one redeeming performance feature; her state-of-the-art North 3Di sails, which allow her to point higher and faster than similar boats. As we outsailed and outpointed a number of monohulls in the very light airs, we could see some of their crews looking at Hawkeye in disbelief. Ross and Lizzie flew to Fiji to join us in time for my birthday. The last time we’d seen them was over a year previously when they came to see us in Colombia. It wasn’t long before Lizzie had bought a guitar and was back in her favourite spot, on Hawkeye’s bow.
Pretty soon, we were exploring Fiji, from mud baths and fishing to sailing a beach catamaran. We visited a beautiful tropical garden but ended up caught in warm, torrential rain. We were invited to a kava ceremony in the house of a local on the beach on one of the islands, where we exchanged gifts and heard about his subsistence life of fishing and farming coconuts. He and Lizzie both sang songs and played the guitar. We all indulged in some awesome snorkelling. The scenery in Fiji is just stunning. We also helped the Fijian’s celebrate their Fiji Day.
All too soon, the tropical cyclone season started to loom, which means that our insurance rules kick in, so, like many other yachts, we must be below 30 degrees South. The only other options are to head further North than 10 degrees, which means going upwind 6,000 miles to the Marquesas Islands, a prospect that is hardly appealing, or to continue onwards out of the Pacific, which is even less appealing. Luckily, New Zealand’s most Northerly point is 35 degrees South so, like many cruisers, we opted to leave the tropics for the first time since 2019 and head South, where it would be colder, but there is no significant risk of cyclones.
The 1,100-mile passage between Fiji and New Zealand is notoriously dangerous because of quick changes in weather. We had the most amazing celebration of our departure from the Fijian port of Vuda, where we were berthed. The staff gathered to sing us a song which promised us fair winds and kind seas before we were presented with a lovely wreath of flowers. We each had private words with our two Tikis, asking for their help on the passage. We needed that help because from the second we left the marina, we headed into nasty two-metre waves which, as you can see from the photo, lifted Hawkeye’s bows right out of the water, straight into a 25-knot head wind.
We were, though, both expecting and fully prepared for this. The advice from experienced Kiwis who have sailed this passage many times is that it is better to get smashed leaving Fiji, where it’s warm than have nasty weather when you approach New Zealand. So, with MetBob’s blessing, and as part of the Sail South rally accompanied by many other yachts, we set sail for New Zealand, leaving Ross behind as he’d decided to take the easy option and fly to New Zealand instead; no yacht can sail upwind anything like as fast or as comfortably as a Boeing 737!
The passage was the usual mixture of weather, wind up and down, everything from becalmed to wonderful sailing but also motor-sailing when the wind didn’t cooperate. When we were about three days into the eight-day voyage, MetBob said that we either had to slow right down and stop, to wait for some nasty weather to sweep across the top of New Zealand from the Tasman Sea or speed up and beat it.
We opted for the latter, as Hawkeye motor-sails very well, and we carry enough fuel to motor perhaps 2,000 miles. New Zealand’s Mãori name is Aotearoa, which means “land of the long white cloud.” This was certainly accurate, as when we arrived, we couldn’t see land until we were almost upon it, because it was enveloped in cloud.
We kept up an average of nearly 9 knots and arrived at Opua in Northern New Zealand exactly six days after leaving Fiji, and the first Rally boat to arrive, by some distance. Crews that arrived over the next few days told some unpleasant tales including that one yacht was dismasted and another scuttled because it developed a leak that could not be staunched.
New Zealand has the strictest entry requirements we have ever seen from any of the dozens of countries Hawkeye has so far visited, with piles of paperwork required even before we arrived. There is also much scrutiny over how clean her bottom is, as they don’t want any nasty foreign critters appearing in their waters.
The officials were very efficient, welcoming, and friendly and, like
all the Kiwis we’ve ever met, unbelievably proud of their country, stressing how much they wanted us to enjoy it. It’s just the little things we noticed, such as the marina staff who helped tie up Hawkeye, who not only weren’t expecting a tip, which is mostly what we have become accustomed to, but they probably would have been insulted if we’d offered it.
Hawkeye is now in New Zealand until May 2025, which is the earliest that the cyclone season finishes, and we can head back to the warmth of the tropics. We treated ourselves to a glass of bubbly once we had cleared into New Zealand, as this is generally the halfway point of many circumnavigations, although for Hawkeye, over the years, we have already sailed her the equivalent of nearly two circumnavigations.

How to prepare your rig for an ocean crossing
Whether you’re planning a transatlantic voyage, competing in an offshore race, or sailing around the world, confidence in your yacht’s rig is essential.
Unlike weekend cruising, extended ocean passages expose your yacht to sustained and, sometimes, extreme stresses – continuous loading, dynamic movement in large ocean swell, and relentless fatigue from long periods of downwind trades sailing. These conditions can exploit minor flaws, turning them into serious failures unless systems are adequately prepared and closely monitored throughout the journey.
To better understand how to prepare your rigging for the demands of bluewater sailing, we spoke with Neil Brinsdon, Managing Director at Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics. With extensive experience supporting offshore cruising yachts, including numerous ARC and World ARC participants, Brinsdon offers expert guidance to help ensure your yacht is ready to go the distance safely and reliably.
Professional Rig Inspection
Before setting sail, we highly recommend a comprehensive rig inspection conducted by a qualified and experienced professional. The scope of the inspection may vary depending on the rig’s age, type, and maintenance history.
For newer rigs, or those with detailed service records, a visual inspection aloft may be sufficient. However, if you have an old rig, or you’ve done a lot of sailing, you may need to unstep the mast for a more thorough examination. This allows riggers to inspect components that are not easily visible, such as mast step fittings, sheave blocks, internal wiring, and hidden corrosion.
The rig report will identify issues, highlight areas of wear, and list parts that have been replaced or flagged for future attention. Most marine insurance providers require this documentation as standard, and it may be important for future claims or warranty issues.
If possible, arrange for a secondary check shortly before departure, especially if you have undertaken additional sailing or rig adjustments. We also encourage skippers and crew members to attend and assist with the inspection process – it’s an excellent opportunity to learn about your rig setup.
Tools and Spare Parts
Once offshore, you’re your own support system, so it’s essential to have a comprehensive inventory of spares – a minor issue that would be a quick fix in port can escalate offshore if the right components aren’t to hand. Your spares should include split pins, clevis pins, shackles, lashings, mechanical terminals, Dyneema strops, rigging tape, halyards, and friction rings as a minimum.
Preferred Supplier to World Cruising Club
Tools in good working order are crucial, too. Ensure bolt croppers, spanners, screwdrivers, and adjustable wrenches are clean, rust-free, and within easy reach – it’s not uncommon for tools to end up buried in the bottom of a lazarette, only to be discovered in poor condition when they’re urgently needed. Think practically: where will you go looking when the boat is pitching in a 4-metre swell?
Rig Climbing Practice
While a mast climb at sea is a last resort, your crew must be confident to do so if the need arises. Spend time practicing rig climbs alongside and establish a clear communication protocol between the person aloft and the deck team. Double-check all climbing equipment for wear as well.
While training, photograph key areas, such as the masthead, spreaders, and gooseneck, so you have a visual reference for comparison in case issues crop up when at sea.
Deck-level Inspection
In the days leading up to departure, carry out a systematic deck-level rig inspection with the whole crew. Check standing and running rigging, furling gear, chainplates, turnbuckles, and deck fittings from bow to stern, referring to a rigging checklist specific to your yacht and paying attention to areas that are prone to wear when under load.
Book a Rig Check
Routine Checks at Sea
Once at sea, daily rig inspections are your best defence against rig systems failure. These needn’t be complex or time-consuming – a simple five-minute check during each watch change is enough to catch most early signs of wear. Encourage every crew member to get involved - when the whole crew is alert to potential issues, the boat stays safer. Lines and hardware that were static when in port will now be moving constantly, so look for signs of chafe, heat build-up, or wear, especially in reefing systems, preventers, and boom control lines. Trade wind sailing, in particular, creates a repetitive, rolling motion that can rub through lines in a matter of hours if left unchecked.
Use binoculars to examine the masthead and spreaders, run your fingers over shrouds and stays to feel for strand separations or unusual tension, and listen out for unexpected noise or vibration when under sail.
Rig Inspection on Arrival
Once you’ve arrived at your destination, it’s easy to let your guard down. But before you relax with a rum punch on a sandy beach, it’s crucial to give your rig one last check. Use your original inspection checklist and compare it with your pre-departure notes and photographs. Look for signs of
elongation in terminals, new movement in deck hardware, and wear on the halyards and sheaves. Document any changes and, if you’re continuing onward, organise repairs before you leave again.
This is also an excellent opportunity to evaluate how well your systems performed under real ocean conditions and identify areas for improvement for the next leg.
Rigging Expertise
A robust, seaworthy rig is not the result of luck - it’s the outcome of planning, professional support, and disciplined maintenance at every stage of your journey. For inspection services, rigging products, or further technical advice, the expert rigging team from Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics are here to assist.
“When you’re weeks away from shore, prevention is always better than cure. A well-prepared rig is the foundation of both performance and safety offshore.”
Neil Brinsdon, Managing Director Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics
A Lifetime of Support Essential Yacht Upgrades for Bluewater Cruising
As summer draws to a close, now is the perfect time to start planning your bluewater yacht refit projects for the winter. Bluewater cruising demands more than occasional weekend comfort, so by transforming your yacht into a self-sufficient home-from-home, you’ll gain more confidence to cross oceans, circumnavigate the globe, or live onboard for long periods.
Whether you want to boost performance for quick passages, improve onboard comfort, or have more independence at sea, the expert team at Ancasta Yacht Services is here to help.
From luxury cabins and high-end entertainment systems to reliable watermakers and power-efficient generators, we asked Paul Hardy, Refit and Service Manager at Ancasta Yacht Services, to offer his expert advice on ways to upgrade time onboard your bluewater cruising yacht.
Hull Preparation
If your yacht or motorboat has spent the winter on dry land, now is the perfect time to inspect the hull, keel, rudder, and through-hull fittings. Check for scratches, gouges, or abrasions and book any necessary repairs before relaunching. AYS offers expert care services, including antifouling, hull polishing, teak cleaning, gelcoat repairs and anode replacement – all with a professional finish.
Climate Control
From the humid tropics to chilly high-latitude anchorages, maintaining a comfortable temperature onboard is often at the top of the wish list for bluewater cruisers. Modern air conditioning and heating systems offer excellent climate control and can be incredibly energy-efficient, minimising your environmental impact and allowing you to operate on limited power offshore.
Self-Sufficient Power
Reliable, quiet, and efficient power generation is non-negotiable for bluewater yachts. A high-quality marine generator will allow you to run refrigeration, air con, and autopilots during long passages, while solar panels and upgraded lithium-ion batteries reduce reliance on fuel and shore power.
Water Supplies
A marine watermaker is one of the most vital systems for bluewater cruisers. It ensures a continuous supply of drinking water on long crossings or in remote anchorages, allowing you to live off-grid for longer and avoid carrying stacks of heavy and bulky bottled water.
Connectivity & Navigation
Bluewater cruising is a great way to switch off and escape the noise and hum-drum of everyday life. Yet, modern satellite systems, such as Starlink, Iridium, and Inmarsat, offer fantastic global coverage, allowing you to safely navigate the world and connect with friends and family, or work remotely whenever you want.
Relaxing Cabins
Sunshade
Spending time on deck is one of the greatest joys of yachting, but excessive sun exposure can quickly take the shine off an otherwise perfect day. High-quality, custom-made sunshades and Biminis provide essential protection, keeping your cockpit or deck space cool and shaded whenever you need it.
Refrigeration & Storage
A reliable fridge/freezer system is essential when provisioning for weeks or months at sea. Energy-efficient models reduce battery drain, and an optional secondary fridge or freezer can be invaluable on longer crossings. Pair this with smart galley upgrades such as slide-out storage, a combination microwave, and modern gimbal appliances to make cooking easier when underway.
Ambient Lighting
High-quality lighting can completely transform the ambience onboard your yacht. Install dimmable LED bulbs in cabins and salons for soft, cosy, energy-efficient lighting. Deck and spreader lights will help with sail handling at night, while underwater lighting can add a striking luminescent glow to your evening anchorages.
Durable Decking
For many sailors, relaxation is a key part of long-distance cruising, but it can also be essential for your safety – tiredness can seriously impair your judgement and alertness, so getting quality sleep is crucial when sailing offshore. Consider upgrading your mattresses, adding blackout blinds, and installing soundproofing insulation in your cabins to help you switch off, unwind, and enjoy a deep sleep on your off-watch.
Luxury Heads & Showers
When you spend a lot of time at sea, comfortable and efficient onboard heads become more than just a luxury. Consider installing freshwater electric toilets with reliable plumbing and low maintenance requirements. A high-pressure shower with hot water is also a brilliant morale booster, and a deck shower is a fantastic addition if you’re exploring the Mediterranean or the tropics.
Replacing worn-out decking not only improves the appearance of your yacht but can also make it more comfortable. Synthetic teaks, such as Flexiteek, boast a natural wood aesthetic and require minimal maintenance, even during long passages at sea. They are also non-slip, UV resistant and can withstand extensive saltwater exposure, ensuring your deck is both stylish and functional.
