BLUEGAME BGM75

THE FUTURE OF MULTIHULL YACHTING.

The award-winning BGM75 is the groundbreaking first model in Bluegame’s innovative BGM range.

Unlike typical multihulls of its size, the BGM75 features a streamlined, narrower beam –delivering a sleek profile without sacrificing accommodation or entertainment space. Enhanced stability, impressive volume, and reduced fuel consumption make it a gamechanger in performance and comfort.

Exuding refinement and exceptional livability, the BGM75 stays true to the core values of Bluegame – combining cutting-edge design with maximum comfort and functionality. Its expertly designed hull ensures outstanding seaworthiness, while protective sidewalls enhance strength and safety.

The expansive beach area and spacious saloon create a relaxed, luxurious atmosphere, with connected cockpits, an optimised helm station, and wide visibility ensuring effortless movement throughout the yacht.

Inside, the BGM75 reflects Bluegame’s signature understated elegance.

The interior design is a masterclass in craftsmanship, with meticulous attention to detail and a sophisticated blend of materials.

The ultra-efficient hull was designed by Philippe Briand, a world-renowned expert in the design of performance hulls, and optimisation of the Volvo IPS propulsion system means 50% less power is required than monohull vessels of the same volume.

Carbon in the hulls and the use of lightweight materials for all nonstructural parts including furnishing components, also contribute to an impressive reduction in fuel consumption. An additional detail in sustainability is the production of 5kW of green energy, guaranteed by 56 solar panels that can be installed on the deckhouse.

“With its sleek, narrow beam and striking profile, this power multihull commands attention wherever it goes. Lightweight, agile, and unapologetically bold, the BGM75 is built for those who refuse to blend in.”
Nick Hatfield, Managing Director of Sanlorenzo Yachts UK.

The Prestige Yachts M-line presents an innovative vision in the world of multihull motor yachts.

Enjoy spacious onboard living areas, excellent stability, and enhanced fuel efficiency. These power multihulls create a harmonious reconnection with nature, and cruising becomes a serene experience characterised by enhanced stability, seamless fluidity, and gentle relaxation.

Innovative designs

Designed by Camilo Garroni, the original master of the Prestige Yachts identity, the Prestige M-Line boasts unique hulls with elegant exterior lines and vast interior volumes, whilst remaining true to an essence of understated luxury which the brand is renowned for.

Comfort & space

Comfort and space are top priorities for today’s boat owners. The M-line addresses this need with generous volumes throughout. Expansive cockpits, swim platforms and flybridges provide plenty of space to relax, while 360-degree views from the saloon present breathtaking sea views.

Stability & efficiency

To address the desire for improved fuel efficiency, the performance of the M-Line is optimised for economic cruising speeds. The two hulls also offer exceptional stability without the need for stabilisers, further reducing weight and fuel consumption; benefits that are not only less costly, but also less harmful for the planet.

PRESTIGE M48

The Prestige M48 offers a volume equivalent to that of a 60-foot motor yacht, providing ample luxury and comfort onboard. The expansive cockpit, aft swim platform, and flybridge create plenty of room to enjoy the sun with family and friends, and by using space between the hulls, the highend interior features a large saloon and stunning 360-degree views. For extra comfort and improved fuel efficiency, the hulls are exceptionally well balanced, allowing the M48 to go without stabilisers, further reducing weight and fuel consumption while improving performance.

PRESTIGE M8

Designed and constructed on the Adriatic Coast, in Monfalcone, Italy, the Prestige M8 is the M-Line flagship. This 65-foot multihull yacht offers the space and comfort equivalent to that generally found aboard 85-foot monohulls. Between the exterior deck, open to the sea, and the refined interior saloons, bathed in light, guests are seamlessly connected with nature. Everything onboard, including the hull layout, interior design and an engine with reduced fuel consumption, has been designed for calm, peaceful cruises and moments of pure harmony.

Prestige M7

The latest addition to the Prestige Yachts power catamaran lineup, the M7, is designed for exploration and brings you closer to nature. Its multihull configuration offers the expansive space and comfort equivalent to a 75-foot monohull yacht, and Prestige has pushed the boundaries of luxury, refinement, and well-being. The M7 delivers an unparalleled experience – seamless, serene cruising in perfect harmony with the sea, all while minimising environmental impact through reduced fuel consumption.

Prestige Yachts Celebrates 5,000 Yachts

Prestige Yachts is celebrating a significant milestone in its 35-year history with the completion of its 5,000th yacht. Founded in Les Herbiers, France, and later expanding to Monfalcone, Italy, Prestige Yachts continues to combine Groupe Beneteau’s industrial expertise with exceptional design, delivering innovative solutions and outstanding craftsmanship.

Prestige is also looking forward to launching the new Prestige M7 this year and introducing more owners to the recently unveiled F4.3. These latest models are expected to be very popular and are proof of Prestige’s commitment to innovation and creating sumptuous onwater experiences.

Ancasta has, once again, been awarded Prestige Dealer of the Year at Boot Düsseldorf 2025. This is testament to the outstanding sales, aftersales, and customer service that our teams deliver. Thank you to Prestige Yachts for this incredible recognition and to all our teams and clients who have made this achievement possible.

Factory Visit: McConaghy China

A

look behind the scenes

Over 16 years ago, McConaghy expanded its Australian-based manufacturing by setting up a full-service boatyard in China. Today, the cutting-edge facility in Zhuhai produces some of the most technically advanced performance yachts on the market, including MC Multihulls, a range of luxurious high-performance yachts with high levels of customisation.

Here, our Multihull Brand Manager, Hannah Le Prevost, and Jeremy Tutt, from Ancasta London, recall their recent visit to Hong Kong to see McConaghy's phenomenal manufacturing processes first-hand.

Zhuhai Boatyard

Despite an early start, our journey to China was surprisingly straightforward. After a direct flight to Hong Kong, a 40-minute hop across an impressive 55 km bridge took us to Zhuhai's colossal 20,000m2 shipyard. This remarkable place is not only home to MC Multihulls but also the birthplace of iconic racing machines, including the revolutionary AC40 foiling monohull. Over the following days, we had the pleasure of meeting Mark Evans, Group Director of McConaghy, Jean-Benoit, General Manager, and Jamie Thompson, Technical Manager, to learn about McConaghy's fantastic facilities and highly customised yacht manufacturing processes.

Strategic Location

One of the most obvious benefits of building yachts in China is the lower overheads. But this doesn't mean quality is compromised – quite the opposite! We quickly realised there's much more to this location than first meets the eye. Surrounded by many of the world's leading product, tech and software manufacturers, such as BMW, Dell, HP, Intel, IBM, Samsung and Sony, the region attracts many talented engineers, technical craftspeople and creative designers. The area is also really well connected, with excellent travel connections globally. This provides McConaghy with fantastic access to plenty of skilled labour to work onsite. And scalingup production to meet demand is made possible.

Cutting Edge Technology

At the heart of the McConaghy Boats shipyard, we witnessed an unwavering commitment to investing in state-of-the-art technology. The shipyard is equipped with everything required for start-to-finish manufacturing. Cuttingedge computer-aided design (CAD) software, 3D modelling tools, and a large autoclave are just some of the tools we saw during our tour. This superb facility enables the skilled workforce to bring McConaghy's innovative designs to life and for the scale of production to accommodate multiple projects simultaneously (there were seven MC Multihulls in build while we were there). The yard also benefits from the expert knowledge and innovative manufacturing techniques bought in by cutting-edge yachts such as the AC40, which is built on the same site.

Customisation

ancasta.com/McConaghy

With everything made at the Zhuhai boatyard, McConaghy has complete control of the entire manufacturing process, facilitating exceptional customisation options for new owners. From personalised layouts and finishes to technical modifications and custom power solutions, the options are extensive. Mark talked us through the process, which begins with a scheduled call with himself and Crystal, Senior Project Manager, to discuss ideas. The design team then develops initial concepts and produces 3D Cad drawings for sign-off. Once in build, we invite clients to visit the shipyard to see their yacht in production. This is a fantastic opportunity to check that everything is to their liking and starts to make their dream an actual reality!

Skilled Team

After spending a lot of time with the McConaghy team, it became evident that everyone working at Zhuhai is extremely dedicated to producing superb yachts that surpass those of their competitors. Staff retention is high, too. Many of the boatbuilders were recruited when McConaghy first arrived in China and have stayed loyal to the ever-expanding team since. Incredibly, they've gone from 90 to 400 employees in just three years! McConaghy's dedication to quality training has clearly paid off, and we were really impressed by the

boat-building team's care and precision when working on the MC Multihulls. The quality is exceptional, and attention to detail is meticulous. Each multihull model also has a dedicated project manager, to ensure detailed product knowledge and development.

Find out more

Our visit to the McConaghy Boats factory in China offered a captivating look behind the scenes of their remarkable shipyard. Positioned strategically in Zhuhai, the facility benefits from a talented workforce and state-of-the-art technology, enabling the production of cutting-edge multihulls. We're very excited to work with McConaghy as they continue to shape the world of high-performance yachts with their unwavering commitment to innovation and personalisation.

Transatlantic Triumph for MC75

Congratulations to the crew of the McConaghy MC75 ‘Jack’ for claiming multihull line honours in the prestigious ARC 2024 Transatlantic Race, crossing the finish line in Saint Lucia after an epic 3,135-nautical-mile journey from Gran Canaria.

The ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) is a true test of endurance, skill, and spirit, demanding sailors navigate the Atlantic’s unpredictable weather and adapt to long stretches of life at sea.

The MC75 delivered exceptional performance and speed in luxurious comfort, finishing ahead of 44 other multihulls — the largest multihull fleet in ARC history.

In addition to this remarkable achievement, the MC75 has been nominated for the prestigious 2025 Multihull of the Year award. Blending McConaghy’s DNA of cutting-edge innovation and timeless design, the MC75 stands out as a leader in performance multihull sailing.

If you’ve ever dreamt of berthing your boat somewhere that is sunny all year round, easy to get to, has plenty of places to explore, good food and drink, secluded anchorages, and excellent onshore facilities, Mallorca is the perfect destination.

Here, Christine Vageler, Office Manager for our Mallorca offices, gives us a snapshot of what’s on offer in the Balearic Islands and why basing your boat here can provide some incredible cruising opportunities, as well as the expert support of our brokerage teams in Palma, Cala D’Or, Alcudia, and Pollença.

MALLORCA

Cruising in Mallorca

Easy access to the Balearics Archipelago

Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearics archipelago. Located in the western Mediterranean Sea close to the Iberian Peninsula, Mallorca, and neighbouring islands Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, offer glistening white beaches, clear turquoise waters and stunning coastal vistas, creating a spectacular natural cruising playground.

Enjoy year-round sailing

The Balearic Islands bask in over 300 days of sunshine every year, creating a wonderfully mild climate all year round. The summer sailing season runs from as early as April to as late as October, with the warm sea warming up in May, and the sea breeze runs like clockwork, gradually building during the day. Winter sailing is also possible with lighter winds in December and January but watch out for mistrals that will occasionally bring stronger winds.

Find your own secluded Cala

Balearic coastlines are adorned with abundant natural coves known locally as ‘Calas.’ These tranquil hideaways boast clear and sheltered waters, creating perfect anchorages for lunch or an overnight stay. With so many to choose from, you can find a little piece of heaven, away from the crowds, to relax and unwind in complete seclusion.

Vibrant onshore entertainment

Whether you enjoy a bit of easy going beach bar culture or some lively evening entertainment, the Balearics have something for everyone. Indulge in freshly prepared tapas with local wine from nearby vineyards on Mallorca, or head to Ibiza to enjoy exotic cocktails and see some of the world’s best DJs.

Full-service shore facilities

The Balearic Islands offer a plethora of well-equipped marinas with berths for vessels large and small. Most ports offer state-of-the-art facilities so you can easily fuel up, provision and carry out any necessary boat work or repairs.

Easy

travel

Travelling to Mallorca is straightforward, with plenty of scheduled flights from all of the major UK hubs, including London, Southampton, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, Newcastle and more. Furthermore, the airport is just a 10-minute drive from Palma’s central marinas.

Idyllic Anchorages

Here are some of the best anchorages to explore on the island of Mallorca, as recommended by the Ancasta Mallorca Sales Team.

Cala Mitjana near Cala Ratjada - North East Coast

Cala Mitjana has a pretty shingle beach, which can be completely deserted at times. With impressive rock formations and crystal-clear waters, it offers idyllic surroundings and ultimate seclusion for lunch or a starlit dinner. There aren’t any shops or restaurants in this little piece of paradise, so stock up on food and drink and spend a lazy afternoon bathing in the sun and swimming, or walk up the hill for breathtaking views over the bay.

Porto Cristo, Portopetro and Portocolom – East Coast

These three charming towns on the east coast of Mallorca provide a wonderful cultural experience. You can take anchor or find a marina berth in Porto Cristo, or pick up a mooring buoy off Portopetro or Portocolom. Rich in history, each town has its own unique story and ancient relics to discover. Stroll through picturesque cobbled streets, visit local markets and soak up the traditional Spanish atmosphere before enjoying fresh seafood dishes.

Parc Nacional de l’Arxipelag de Cabrera – South Coast

The Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park is a forested island home to abundant exotic wildlife, flora and fauna just off the South Coast of Mallorca. Access to the island is heavily restricted, and anchoring is not allowed, but special permits can be obtained online that enable you to sail close to the island and pick up a mooring buoy. Diving is popular here, and organised hikes show you the best that the island has to offer.

Sant Elm – West Coast

Sant Elm is a beautiful little town on the Southwest corner of Mallorca. The setting is striking, with magnificent turquoise waters and the Tramuntana mountains towering above the bay. You’ll also discover stunning views of Sa Dragonera Island, an uninhabited national park –worth exploring if you have the time. Popular in the summer, Sant Elm has two beaches – one with soft golden sand, and a smaller shingle beach. In the town, you’ll find seaview restaurants with a lively atmosphere.

Sa Foradada, North West Coast

Sa Foradada on the North West coast of Mallorca features a remarkable 10-metre hole worn away in the cliff face, which can be seen from both the water and ashore. In addition to this extraordinary rock formation, this cove is a great place to watch the sunset. If you hike up the hill, you’ll find an excellent restaurant where you can admire the views whilst enjoying delicious homemade Spanish paella.

Cala Varques - East Coast

Head to Cala Varques on the east coast for complete seclusion and relaxation. This picturesque cove boasts a 90-metre white sand beach lapped by inky blue water, with a backdrop of low-lying rocky cliffs and vegetation. Rural in every sense, there aren’t any facilities on shore, so come well stocked with your favourite food and drink to enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle.

Caló des Màrmols - South East Coast

Caló des Màrmols is a serene and quiet cove located near the southern tip of the island. It features a small beach made up of sand and pebbles, surrounded by barren cliffs. Access to the cove is limited by land and there are no facilities, which makes it a peaceful spot to enjoy a day at anchor. The crystal-clear water is ideal for snorkelling, or you can simply relax and take in the beautiful scenery.

The charity’s new Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, brought to the water in partnership with Ancasta Group, will help transform more young lives after cancer treatment.

More young cancer survivors will be able to receive the vital support they need after treatment as the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust officially welcomes a new boat to its fleet: a Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, Kalooki.

At 46ft (over 14m), Kalooki is longer and wider than the charity’s other boats, allowing more young people to experience its transformational adventures, while bespoke accessibility adaptations mean more of those who need additional support with their mobility can benefit from the charity’s support.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that takes young people aged 8-24 living through and beyond cancer on sailing and outdoor adventure trips to inspire them to believe in a brighter future. In 2024, the charity supported 671 young people – the most since it was founded in 2003.

With demand for trip places projected to increase further in the coming years, Kalooki will allow more children, teenagers and young adults to access the vital support they need after the life-changing trauma of cancer treatment.

Through the generosity of a gentleman who was an ardent sailor and enthusiastically supported the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust over many years, the charity is absolutely delighted to be the recipient of the newly built 46ft yacht, Kalooki.

Features and adaptations

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust worked in partnership with Ancasta Group and globally renowned boatbuilders Beneteau to bring Kalooki to the water.

She was adapted under the expertise of Ancasta Yacht Services at Port Hamble Marina and with advice from 28-year-old George Paxford, who first sailed with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in 2009 following treatment for bone cancer in his leg and had an above-knee amputation after the cancer returned in 2018.

George, who now volunteers for the charity, helped map out ways of making Kalooki more accessible to help young people rediscover their independence and sense of possibility after cancer.

He said: “I’ve had to get used to an adapted way of moving around, which makes me very useful when it comes to designing an adaptive boat. I look to see if there are trip hazards, the need for grab rails, or access requirements, like if there is enough space for two people to get past or sit down. Anything that will reassure young people and make sure they have as much fun on trips as they possibly can.”

With George’s insight and guidance, Kalooki has been built with young people living through and beyond cancer in mind. Additional

For every new boat sold, Ancasta donates the cost for one young person to enjoy a transformational four-day adventure with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, enabling more young people to access vital support after cancer.

handrails around the yacht will help with mobility and steadiness, while extra space in the cockpit and saloon areas makes it easier to move around. Bespoke seating and handholds at the back of the boat, which also folds down, make it even more straightforward to get on and off.

Adaptations to help sail the boat have been made, too, such as moving the two primary winches forward so young people can more readily access them. Kalooki also has a German mainsheet set-up, allowing young people to be more involved as sails can be controlled from both sides of the boat.

She has five cabins compared to the Heroes’ four, which is significant for getting more young people on trips, but some cabins also feature a wooden divider, giving young people more privacy on board, while also functioning as full-sized bunks for other uses too.

‘Game-changer’

Dame Ellen MacArthur was joined by special guests, including many who made the new boat possible, for Kalooki’s naming at Buckler’s Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River in Hampshire in March.

She described Kalooki as a ‘game-changer’ as her charity aims to support more young people than ever this summer.

She said: “It’s a big day for us at the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as we welcome Kalooki into our fleet. It’s wonderful for us to have boats in the water so we can take young people out and have adventures with them, and it makes a huge difference to have Kalooki. She’s one of ours, and she is a game-changer.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to Jean-François Lair and all the team at Beneteau, and Nick Griffith and all the team at Ancasta. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you’ve done. It’s amazing to have Kalooki in the fleet.”

Kalooki becomes the third specially adapted boat owned by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. In 2016 and 2017, Ancasta and Beneteau were instrumental in the charity acquiring two Beneteau Oceanis 45sSolent Hero and Caledonian Hero - which sail from the charity’s bases in East Cowes Marina, Isle of Wight, and Largs Yacht Haven, Scotland respectively. Kalooki joins Solent Hero in East Cowes, while the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust also owns the Gibsea 44, Moonspray, in Largs. Nick Griffith, Ancasta Group Managing Director, said: “We’re delighted to see Kalooki set sail, ready to help the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust reach even more young people. After facing so many challenges, these inspiring young individuals deserve the chance to reconnect with life and themselves through sailing and outdoor adventures. Supporting this incredible mission is something that I, along with the entire team at Ancasta, feel deeply passionate about.”

Jean-François Lair from Beneteau continued: “Beneteau is proud to support Ellen MacArthur’s Cancer Trust. This is a long-term collaboration which started nearly 10 years ago. What the charity is doing is remarkable. Also, Dame Ellen MacArthur is a very famous figure in France. So, when Nick Griffith from Ancasta proposed us to support the project, it was a very easy decision to make.”

Young people will get to experience the benefits of Kalooki when the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s 2025 season gets underway in the last week of May. She will also be taking part in this summer’s Round The Island Race. For more information visit ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org or follow @EMCTrust across social media.

How to look after your rigging

Rig inspections are essential to maintaining your sailing yacht's overall safety and performance. Rig failures can be costly, dangerous to your crew and may cause damage to your boat and others. Still, by identifying weak spots and having the rig professionally repaired before it breaks, mast failure can usually be avoided. Most yacht insurance policies also require that your rigging is in a fit and seaworthy condition, so it's essential to ensure your mast and standing rigging are safe and secure at all times.

Split Pins and Rings

Check that there aren’t any split pins or rings missing. All split pins should be open at a 20-degree angle and split rings should be tightly coiled to prevent movement.

We recommend that a professional rigger checks all of your rigging periodically. But here are a few things you can check yourself every time you go sailing to help prevent problems. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it covers a few of the basics. Always seek professional advice should you uncover any concerns.

▲Split pins missing
▲Split pins present
▲Uncoiled split rings
▲Closed split rings

Shackles

All shackles should be seized and locked to prevent the bolts from unwinding. Seizing wire or cable ties can be used to secure the shackle.

A Family’s Voyage Across the Pacific

Imagine setting sail with your family on a once-in-a-lifetime voyage around the world aboard your own luxurious Lagoon 450. That’s exactly what this adventurous UK family has done. After exploring the Caribbean and crossing the vast Pacific, the Hawkeye crew are now immersing themselves in the beauty of New Zealand.

In this two-part series, we follow their inspiring journey – first from Tahiti to Tonga, where they discover remote island paradises. Then, in part two, they sail through Fiji’s vibrant waters before taking on the legendary passage to New Zealand.

Tahiti to Tonga

After nearly seven weeks, we finally tore Hawkeye away from the luxuries of a marina berth in Tahiti’s capital, Papeete, to resume the cruising life and headed to the next island called Moorea. From here on, we really are following in the footsteps not just of Captain Cook but also those of his ship’s master, William Bligh, on HMS Bounty. It’s hard to visualise the vast distances across the Pacific Ocean, not least because we tend to weave our way around the islands as the fancy takes us, never taking a direct route to anywhere. Hawkeye’s satellite tracker log shows that we had already sailed nearly 6,000 miles from Panama to get to Tahiti, but there were still another 5,000 miles yet to go before we reached New Zealand. Captain Cook called Tahiti, and the other nearby islands he later visited, the Society Islands because they are in relatively close proximity, less than a day’s sail apart. To try to atone for behaving like spoilt kids when we took a quad bike tour of Moorea, we followed an ancient Polynesian custom and fitted Tiki’s, who are Gods, to each of Hawkeye’s bows. “How do they work?” we asked the locals. It turned out that the Tiki’s need instructions in the form of prayers, so we asked our port side Tiki to give Hawkeye kind weather, whereas the starboard Tiki was asked to keep us safe from hazards such as rocks, other boats or anything in the water. So far, their help has been impeccable!

We sailed on to first of the Leeward islands which is Huahine, then Raiatea, where the pace of life slowed right down, and the glitzy hotels of Tahiti and hordes of people were a distant memory. Our luck was in when we were visited by a trio of massive manta rays, perhaps three meters or more across, several nights in a row, with

them playing around in Hawkeye’s underwater lights. You can judge the size of these mantas by the photo of Alexandra snorkelling above them; they weren’t in the least bit bothered by us. Other cruisers joined us as we sat on the aft deck, sipping drinks and watching their mesmerising somersaults. We also visited a pearl farm where we learned how they are grown and extracted.

We had a short sail across to the renowned island of Bora Bora, which was often referred to by other cruisers as Bora Boring because it has a focus as a honeymoon destination. However, our experience was very different, as perhaps we scratched the surface a little more.

We discovered an interesting WWII history, where Bora Bora was a vital link to supply the submarines based in Australia, which sank the vast majority of the Japanese merchant navy fleet, which largely contributed to Japan’s surrender. There was even a massive WWII naval gun in place which could, in theory, still fire. We were treated to a helicopter flight around the islands, which gave stunning views and also visited the Bora Bora Yacht Club.

After Bora Bora we headed to Maupiti Island, which is, so the locals say, how Bora Bora used to be. There are no hotels or resorts of any kind, just a few small Pensions (B&B’s) and the people are clearly very happy indeed about that. The hike to the summit of Teurafaatiu was hard work, hand over hand climbing on rocks at the steepest part near the top, but the view was, well, the most stunning view we’ve ever seen anywhere.

The entrance to Maupiti is very narrow, with often rather nasty waves and high currents, which is probably why Captain Cook didn’t even attempt entry with HMS Endeavour. We took Hawkeye in to wait a few days for a weather window for the next long stretch across the Pacific but ended up being gale bound there for ten days, during which we cycled around the island and snorkelled on the reefs. We were lucky enough to be there at the same time as their annual festival, called a Heiva, which in Polynesian means “community gathering” which runs for about four weeks. The dancing and music were amazing, but here there were no tourists, this was just for local people, so we felt

privileged to be made so welcome. As there are no shops in Maupiti, we set off for the ten-day voyage towards Tonga having already pretty much consumed the fresh food we had budgeted for the voyage.

Our sailing plans were constantly dashed by the weather, with the culprit being the South Pacific Convergence Zone, which is a complex weather feature that is hard to predict, even for the super-computers that generate the weather models. Our two favourite weather models, for the entire world, are actually both UK based, with the Met Office at Exeter and ECMWF at Reading. We use a specialist weather router, a highly experienced Kiwi called MetBob whose advice is invaluable, including interpreting how the weather relates to Hawkeye’s sailing characteristics. Once the nasty weather had gone and we could pass through Maupiti’s reefs safely into the open sea, all our plans were slowly dashed. As we each approached, MetBob wisely suggested that we scrub our island stops at Aitutaiki, Palmeston and Niue or otherwise face nasty weather. Sailing on towards Tonga, we crossed the “false” international date line, called so because Tonga decided it wanted to be in the same time zone as Fiji, so they changed to Fijian time. Thus, we lost a day; Monday suddenly becomes Tuesday plus one hour. Later, between Tonga and Fiji, we sailed across the “true” date line, where our longitude went from West to East. Weird. As ever we had a mixture of balmy weather with no wind through to near gale with sails reefed down; the sun set right in front of us each evening. Fresh bread seemed to improve with every baking session. Alexandra and I share the watches evenly, with our radar and AIS alarms giving extra comfort, especially at night, and of course the ever-watchful Tiki’s on the bow.

Our paths now diverged from that of Captain Cook on his first voyage, as we were headed to Tonga. When leaving Tahiti, Captain Cook opened his secret instructions from the Admiralty, to discover that he was to sail south, into freezing cold weather, in what became a fruitless search for Terra Australis Incognita, which we now know as Antarctica, and then explore the coast of New Zealand. I am pretty sure that Captain Cook would not appreciate the liberty I have taken

of doodling Hawkeye’s track, in red, over the top of his track of HMS Endeavour.

Nine days later, as we approached Tonga we were greeted by breaching humpback whales. After docking in Vava’u, which was as calm as a millpond after the oceanic waves outside, the officials were welcoming and efficient. This is the first English speaking country we have visited since leaving Antigua a year before, where cars drive on the left and there are photos pinned up of King Charles. Almost every country we will now visit, through Asia and Africa back to Antigua, drives on the left and has many English-speaking people. The ancient Polynesian Kingdom of Tonga consists of 176 islands scattered over the ocean and is the first country in the world to greet each new day. We took a tour to snorkel with the humpback whales but soon discovered that getting to swim anywhere near them is very tricky, even in a specialist whale watching boat that could motor at over 30 knots.

Get Your Yacht Ready for the New Boating Season

As the days grow longer and the promise of warmer breezes beckons, it’s time to prepare your yacht for a season of smooth sailing. Although boat maintenance might not be at the top of your priority list, taking care of your yacht now will ensure you’re ready to set sail with confidence this summer, and Ancasta Yacht Services (AYS) is here to take the stress out of the preparation. Whether you need a full-service package or a helping hand with specialist jobs, their expert team has you covered.

Here Paul Hardy, Technical Sales & Service Manager at Ancasta Yacht Services, shares some of the most important jobs to carry out before you hit the water.

Hull Preparation

If your yacht or motorboat has spent the winter on dry land, now is the perfect time to inspect the hull, keel, rudder, and through-hull fittings. Check for scratches, gouges, or abrasions and book any necessary repairs before relaunching. AYS offers expert care services, including antifouling, hull polishing, teak cleaning, gelcoat repairs and anode replacement – all with a professional finish.

Engine Servicing

A well-maintained engine is essential to keeping your yacht running smoothly, and routine servicing should follow the key intervals of 50, 250, 500, and 750 hours. Our in-house marine engineering team provides expert, cost-effective servicing for complete peace of mind, and are approved dealers and service agents for Yanmar, Volvo Penta and Nanni diesel engines.

Deck Hardware Inspection

Give your deckware a thorough check to ensure that stanchions, lifelines, cleats, chain plates, and pulpits are in top condition. And don’t forget to inspect the anchor system and service the winches to avoid any issues or downtime over the summer. AYS is an approved Lewmar Gold Installer and Service Centre, offering expert maintenance by Lewmar-trained technicians if you want extra reliability for the season ahead.

Safety Kit Servicing

Your safety equipment – liferafts, lifejackets, EPIRBs, and hydrostatic MOB gear – requires regular servicing. If you don’t have time to organise this, we can collect your equipment, deliver it to our trusted partners at Ocean Safety for maintenance, and return it to your yacht ready for the season ahead.

Interior and Exterior Valet

After months of winter storage, even the most well-kept boat cabin can get a bit stale, so a professional interior valet will refresh your living spaces and make your time on board even more comfortable. And don’t overlook the decks – teak surfaces, in particular, need extra care to avoid long-term damage. AYS offers detailed valeting solutions to rejuvenate your boat’s appearance inside and out.

Sail and Canvas Restoration

On-deck canvas – sail covers, dodgers, and biminis – often need a thorough clean after being exposed to the elements over the winter. We also recommend checking your sails for wear and tear and sending them for professional laundering and repair so they’re in good condition when you set sail.

BOOK YOUR PRE-SEASON MAINTENANCE TODAY!

Whether you own a motor or sailing yacht, now is the time to carry out essential maintenance and upgrades. Don’t wait another season to sort out an irritating niggle or upgrade an out-of-date system.

If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, we still have a few slots available to help you get your boat ready for the spring, so please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
