Welcome to Ancasta’s 2015 Spring Collection. Spring has definitely sprung in the world of boats, and more so than we have experienced for many years. The level of activity within all aspects of the leisure marine trade in the UK and further afield has been building over recent months to a very encouraging level. Our refit and repair business and our rigging business along with the new boat commissioning department are as busy as we have seen for a very long time, which is great to see. Clearly the boating market is looking forward to the summer as much as we are. News on brokerage is that although the strong £ has meant our European buyers have shallower pockets, the UK market remains active. We’ve had a reasonably strong autumn and winter season and it really does feel as if the ‘green shoots’ are taking hold. Inside we have a terrific collection of brokerage boats for those looking to change or indeed
for those getting involved for the first time. There are some very special boats out there looking for new homes. Take a look. New boat wise, we have had very productive Autumn and Winter from a sales perspective. New models and new brands in the form of Beneteau Power are now well established in the Ancasta stable of great boats. If you haven’t looked at what is on offer then you should. We also have the Palma Boat Show in late April as well as the Multihull show in La Grande Motte in mid-April. Inside you will see that for this summer Ancasta has planned a number of interesting events for both motor boaters and yachters alike. Already we have seen a strong take up for all the events. For those of you that have not been able to get involved in the past I would encourage to at least try one. Our experience is that those
who do join in not only have a terrific time but learn lots and find they are getting far more out of their boats due to the experienced gained. This summer is going to be one of the biggest for our racing contingent. In addition to the regular list of local events we have the excitement of the first Americas Cup World series off Portsmouth in June. For those of you not familiar do try and find the time to get involved. To see these boats up close is a memorable experience whether you are a sailor or a motor enthusiast. The fact the local team are probably going to win makes it all even more attractive. In addition to the World Series event, the Solent will host Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary celebrations with a number of big events to commemorate. This year we also have the start of the Fastnet in August. 300 entries registered in 24 minutes for this classic! I hope you enjoy what has been assembled within this magazine. The Beneteau Sea Trials are taking place in Palma Mallorca this spring and gives us the opportunity to board the Sense 55 the Oceanis 55 and Oceanis 35, undoubtedly three of Beneteau’s most successful models to date. On the weekend of the 30th – 31st May our Ancasta Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Beneteau Owners’ Association will be heading out on their first ‘cruise’ of the season. Meeting in Lymington on Friday night, Ancasta will be greeting the fleet with a Pimms reception on the pontoon, before everyone heads to Poole town quay on Saturday morning where the festivities will begin. Including an exploration of the historic Quay and the Poole Cockle trail, we will be spending Saturday night in the King Charles Pub in Thames Street to enjoy some traditional grub from what is considered to be Poole’s oldest pub, before the live entertainment begins at 9pm. Sunday will begin with breakfast at the Deli on the Quay, directly opposite the Town Quay Marina entrance, before a leisurely return to our home bases. evening of arrival, when Saturday dawns we’ll be making our way around to Poole Bay to enjoy the Bournemouth Air Festival with the best seats in the house! Then it is back to Lymington for cocktails in the Royal before feasting on a barbeque in The Mayflower.

IN THE CLUB AND READY TO CRUISE! 23rd -28th MAY 2015 In this year’s May half-term the Ancasta Motor Boat Club are taking a tour of the West Country with nights in Dartmouth and Plymouth and stopping in Weymouth on the return trip. Encouraging owners to stretch their motor boating legs a little in the safety and security of the Club environment, we will be making the most of the local knowledge held in our our South West offices arranging some great stopovers, different eateries and interesting activities. There is still time to join the Motor Boat Club (which is free) and to come along on the South West Rendezvous, however places are filling up quickly. We will be organising additional adventures and excursions to be had at each
stopover – and as soon as these are confirmed we will let all of members know. A provisional itinerary includes drinks and a safety brief on the 22nd in Lymington Yacht Haven, passage to Dartmouth with drinks and dinner on arrival on the 23rd, some shopping, SUP or visits to the Naval base on Sunday the 24th. A shorter passage to Plymouth on the 25th with dinner in the evening locally. In Weymouth on the 26th, fish and chips will be on the menu, before we make our return to the Solent on the 27th. The SW rendezvous is intended for both experienced boaters and novices alike. Passage planning will be organised and briefed daily by a professional skipper (who is also driving the Ancasta lead boat). The event will be supported onshore by the Ancasta Aftersales team should you have a technical issue or simply be in need
of some advice about your boat along the way. (read more about the Aftersales team on page: 66) Organisation, passage planning, the booking of berthing and restaurants will all be done by Ancasta in advance of the event. Berthing, fuel, food and drink costs are the responsibility of each boat. hirty years ago I took a rather sad Morris 1100 on the endless road trip to Cornwall. I arrived in Gillan Creek on the Helford River on a rain swept night in early June, collapsed into a little cottage and woke up the next morning in the most beautiful place in all the world! Since then I’ve been lucky enough to have sailed and lived in many stunning parts of the world …. and I still haven’t changed my mind.
Since 2003 I have lived around the Helford River. OK, so the weather is terrible and it takes forever to get here, but it is a very special part of the world. So the next time you look at your charts with the summer holiday in mind and think “cheap wine, excellent food and sunshine” try to resist the pull of Brittany. Come to Cornwall and the Scilly Isles. You will discover the most
HELFORD RIVER REGATTAS Every year in late July and August the four villages on the Helford organise four rowing regattas which have become the high point of the River’s social calendar. They are a huge draw for both locals and holiday makers. They all follow a similar format of numerous rowing race in regatta dinghies which start with a degree of seriousness (men’s singles; ladies singles etc.) and descend gradually (mixed
beautiful anchorages, great pubs, friendly yacht clubs and some weird and wonderful people. Perhaps this guide to the Helford might be a taste of what Devon and Cornwall’s cruising ground has to offer….. The Helford River is a magical place. It’s a microcosm of Cornwall set along its shores. It’s only seven miles or so from the open sea to the head of the navigable river at Gweek, but in that time you pass from imposing cliffs and head lands, stunning beaches protected by rocky out crops, picture post card villages with thatched cottages and great water side pubs, to tree lined banks that feel like the Amazon. The Helford River lies some four miles south of Helford. Approaching from the sea you gradually see the entrance appearing in the cliffs that make up the Lizard Peninsular that ends in Britain’s most southerly location. On the North Bank of the entrance is the August Rock buoy … it’s not a rock but a reef so don’t try and cut to the north! To the south is the Dennis head and the entrance to Gillian Creek. Passing through the entrance, the river widens to a huge sheltered area. Large imposing houses sit high above the river in the woods and fields of both the north and south shores. On the North Shore is the hamlet of Durgan, a handful of granite cottages and some permanent moorings. You can anchor to the left and right of Durgan in calm conditions, but avoid the eel grass beds to the far right; it’s a breeding

Port Navas Regatta starts the season and is centred on the village quay and the yacht club. It also has access to fields by the water so has more of a village fete atmosphere. Last summer Port Navas celebrated its 100th anniversary! Helford Passage benefits from being held off the beach in front of the Ferry Boat Pub whilst Helford Village’s regatta is organised from the garden terraces of the Shipwrights pub. All of which might put Durgan, which has no
ground for sea horses! On the North Bank are three famous gardens, Trebah, Glendurgan and Carwinion each benefitting from the Helford’s warm micro-climate. The South Shore is a series of stunning sand coves protected by rocky out crops. Each provides a safe anchorage in calm weather or south westerly breezes. The Helford faces east…. nothing south of “the narrows” is comfortable in an easterly breeze! Continuing west up the river you pass through the “narrows” beyond which lie the Helford Roads and you will find lines of moored vessels and lots of green visitor’s buoys. Call Helford River Moorings on 01326 250749 if you need a berth. On the North Bank is the village of Helford Passage and on the beach is the Ferry Boat Pub, great food, excellent beer and a dreamy location. It’s also the home of the Helford River Ferry (who will come to your boat if needed). To the south is the Helford River Yacht Club (their pontoons dry out so check the tides!), great food, excellent beer and a dreamy location, and the village of Helford. Helford Village straight out of a picture post card, a tea garden, a post office come village store and of course a stunning thatched pub, The Shipwrights, with its own pontoon and guess what ….great food, excellent beer and a dreamy location.
pub, at a disadvantage… but it’s the last regatta and the setting on the beach is stunning. Also being closer to the sea they get a rescue helicopter demo not just the inshore life boat! Huge thanks to the RNLI and RNAS Culdrose. If you are in Cornwall during July or August check the dates and come and visit at least one of these regattas… be prepared to take part and get very, very wet!

Moving on up through the roads the hills on the North Bank are dotted with some extra ordinary houses (not to mention some famous owners). On the North Bank is the entrance to Port Navas creek. Here the trees come down to the water and the little village of Port Navas sits on the water. Port Navas is home to the Duchy Oyster Farm and the Port Navas Yacht Club. The yacht club has pontoons but (you’ve guessed it) they dry out so check the tide. It’s another fantastic place to have a meal and a beer whilst watching fish jumping in the creek. It’s hard to imagine that the pub here was closed in the 1870s because of fights between the local miners, farmers and fisher men! Port Navas was an industrial port, a centre for shipping granite to the rest of the world. Continuing to the main river west, the waters widen to a vast lagoon providing acres of oyster beds. To the south is the wooded entrance to Frenchman’s Creek immortalised in Daphne du Maurier’s book of that title. It’s worth exploring the creek. Oaks crowd down to the water, the ribs of old boats poke out of the mud, the water is still and the silence is deafening… it’s all rather spooky. Polwheveral creek; it’s all tidal from there so check the charts on your way to Scott’s Quay and Polwheveral Mill. The southerly spur heads on all the way to Gweek. The North Banks are covered with some of the oldest natural oak woods in Britain. On the South Bank you pass Tremaine Quay a great place to BBQ or camp. A little further west and on the North Bank is Merthen Quay and between the two is Merthen pool. This deep water pool as the last over-night anchorage. Except at the height of summer you are likely to be the only boat there. This is a magical spot. From here the river twists and turns. It also shallows and is only accessible at high tide (don’t fail to follow the channel… however odd the red and greens look, they are right!) on its way to Gweek village past Bishops Quay and the Seal Sanctuary (best visited in the spring when they are looking after numerous abandoned or lost pups). Finally the river slides past some industrial workings and opens out into Gweek Quay Boat Yard. Gweek Quay Boat yard is a fully functioning boat yard if you need
any help during your stay. Gweek has a post office and shop and of course another great Cornish pub, The Black Swan. And that is the river. By now I hope that you have concluded that this is a part of the world that’s worth exploring. Of course I haven’t mentioned all the stunning spots on the Tamar, the Fal and Fowey, and we haven’t even started on the Scillies...

CRUISING WITH KIDS: FROM GREECE TO THE GRENADINES Our family and friends were mostly incredulous when we shared our crazy idea. We were going spend a year living onboard a yacht with our two young children, cruising around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Typical concerns expressed by our nearest and dearest included the safety of the kids, the cost and whether our job prospects would be ruined once we came back. We had just had our first daughter and I was pregnant with baby number two. My husband Tim had a good job working for a bank in the City. We were comfortable, we had a nice house, but we weren’t rich: how could we afford to throw all that away and sail off into the horizon without a care in the world?
The reality is that taking time off to go cruising, with or without kids, doesn’t have to be a pipe dream. It is actually a very affordable way to live. There are no utility bills, no mortgage payments, no cars to service. The yacht doesn’t have to cost a fortune and certainly doesn’t have to be new. The kids will not suffer if they are taken out of school; in fact they will thrive, both socially and intellectually.

We fell in love with cruising; with the simplicity of it, with the the romance of being able to drop anchor anywhere as long as it was sheltered, with the free spirited people we met along the way.

Even better, she was in Greece, which is where we wanted to start the trip.
I realise it is easy to say all this with hindsight. For us to arrive at that magical yet slightly nerve-racking moment on a sunny May day in Greece, when we slipped the mooring lines for the first time, took months of planning, some clever thinking and a huge amount of determination. Firstly, we had to buy a boat. Don’t underestimate the importance of this crucial first step. The type of vessel you choose will be dependent on your budget, your route and your passengers. As we were

And so, Open Blue became our new home. Tim handed in his notice, we rented out our house and packed our bags for this trip of a lifetime. The boat had been sitting for two years and needed a lot of work, including fixing various electrical issues, replacing leaking hatches, servicing the engine, fitting a water maker,

fixing loos, fitting AIS and servicing or upgrading all the safety equipment. Tim managed to do all this before departure date and we continued to tinker and invest in her throughout our year away. Our route was a well-sailed one, but because we were travelling by sea it still felt like we were off the beaten track. We started in Preveza, Greece, and cruised around the wonderful Ionian Islands. This was a great place to start as it is line of sight sailing, with plenty of pretty anchorages to explore, breath-taking clear water and many a Greek taverna to while away the hours in. This pattern was repeated pretty much everywhere we went in Greece: through the Corinth Canal to Athens, down the Cyclades, around the bottom of the Peloponnese to Zakynthos and back to Lefkas. Next stop was Sicily, followed by Sardinia, a brief stint in Tuscany and then Corsica: all beautiful in their own way. By this time we had been at sea for five months and time was ticking: we had to be in the Canaries by the end of October in order to take part in Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). So, from Corsica, it was a quick and exciting passage to Menorca, followed by stints in Mallorca and Ibiza. We dropped into Gibraltar for a brief visit to stock up on supplies, including the strange novelty
of a trip to Marks & Spencer to snap up tinned curries and soups for the long Atlantic passage. Eventually we arrived in the Canaries. We had taken to our new cruising lifestyle. We were relaxed, much closer as a family and very much enjoying the daily delights of discovering new places and meeting new people. The next big challenge was preparing Open Blue for the Atlantic crossing on the ARC rally, but that is a story in itself. Suffice to say, she carried her crew safely across in just over 18 days with many adventures along the way. The rest of the year sped by in a blur of stunning Caribbean beaches, turquoise blue sea and copious rum punches. All too soon, it was time to come home. We had always planned to sell Open Blue when we returned as she was too big a boat to keep in the UK. We put her on the market with Ancasta in Swanwick. The brokers were great at showing people round, explaining her history and fielding questions. It was an emotional day when she was sold within six months for a little less than what we bought her for; not bad considering she had been our home for a year and sailed 7500 miles, carrying us to the most incredible places. Travelling brought us together as a family and ignited a sense of wanderlust and curiosity about the world in the children. I would go again in an instant. Pod drives such as Volvo-Penta IPS and Cummins Zeus, have taken the power boat market by storm during the past few years. And with good reason - these propulsion systems offer several major advantages over traditional shaft power systems. The POD drive system eliminates the need for shafts, p-brackets, and rudders. Instead of using traditional running gear to transfer the engine’s power into thrust, a “pod”, consisting of the transmission, outdrive, and propellers, is mounted right through the bottom of the boat. The pod itself articulates to direct propeller thrust, so no rudders are needed.

It’s hard to imagine how a Lagoon could become any easier to sail but it’s happened. The 39 marks the start of a new generation of Lagoon designs, with even better ergonomics and rig handling systems. Already a success in the UK, where she is of a convenient size for local marinas, we have also supplied a 39 for a 3-year cruise to Australia. She’s a great-looking boat too. With more space and features than the 380 but a little less beam than the 400 S2, Lagoon really have this size category covered. The 39 brings in a radical new look, with bevelled deck edges, a cutaway bow and sharp coachroof styling. New features include an aftstepped main, a bevelled deck edge and an extra-wide aft passageway. Moving the mast position aft creates enough space for a self-tacking genoa, making upwind sailing really simple. The efficient high aspect ratio mainsail has a manageable short boom and the helm station is accessible from the cockpit or the side deck. The black Code 0 sail option massively increases sail power in light to mid-strength breezes and will get you closer to the wind than a conventional gennaker. It looks fabulous too! Overhauls & Upgrades HYS Refit & Repairs look forward to the annual return of Vittfarne the one off custom design Baltic 70, for regular upgrades which retain her classic authenticity. HYS have been maintaining this fine yacht for the last 6 years and 2014 saw her undergo a major 6 month update. As well as installing a lithium battery and flush hatches, her teak decks were completely renewed and the cabin joinery was modified to ensure that although practically functional, her time honoured character was preserved. “HYS Refit & Repair have once again completed a

As soon as ‘Pride of Man III’ arrived work began on the customisation which included the removal of the companionway entrance for replacement with an electric wheelchair stair lift. The lift is a completely bespoke piece of equipment designed by Ainslie Hunt HYS Refit & Repair’s Project Manager and General Manager. Malcolm Hearnden. The design was then manufactured and produced by our in-house team of experts, who in addition, removed the standard cockpit table and refitted it with a sliding mechanism to allow improved access for wheelchair users. Destruction and Damage Repair
damage to her starboard side, including hull, deck and interior damage. HYS Refit & Repair removed the boat’s mast and all internal joinery including the navigation area and electronics, so the team could gain access. The hull was temporarily reformed back to its original profile in order to produce an accurate mould which was realigned to the hull and secured in place. It was then gel coated and glass matt was re-applied internally, as to the original hull specification. Once cured the joint line between the existing hull and new lay up was ground back and re-gel coated in order to tie the repair in on the outside. It was then polished back to the original profile. The damaged area of deck was cut and ground back to sound material including balsa core. This was reglassed from the inside to reinstate the lower deck skin and tie it back in with the hull. The balsa was replaced and re-glassed as per the original specification. The patterned area of the deck was reproduced and bonded down, gel filling and fairing edges back to original profile. Any removed deck fittings and toe rails were re-fitted and renewed as required. All internal joinery was replaced renewing and repairing any damaged woodwork.
