Welcome to Ancasta’s 2016 Winter Collection. New model launches is the theme for the upcoming Boat Show season. Our Winter Collection is awash with detail about new model launches from the manufacturers Ancasta represents and I can’t recall ever seeing quite so many in one season in our 35 year history. Paris Boat Show starts at the beginning of December, followed by the rejuvenated London Boat Show in early January with Dusseldorf soon after. It is very encouraging to see such investment from our manufacturers. The pickup in the boat buying markets has given them the confidence to invest in new product and this Winter we are seeing the benefits of that investment Within this issue you will find details on what is being launched and where you can see it. All these shows are showing increased exhibitor numbers and increased attendance and Ancasta will be well represented at all of them. If you would like to attend and would like some guidance then please call any of our offices as we would be pleased to assist.

In the world of Brokerage, interest has continued well into the depths of Winter. Listing and enquiry levels have continued to grow with all offices reporting good levels of activity which is encouraging. We can see the quality of listings has improved giving all buyers an improved level of choice. In support of this claim, the collection of used Yachts inside is Ancasta’s finest to date. Another sign of a healthy market! Ancasta’s online presence continues to grow and clearly our presence in the broader European market has also increased for both Buyers and Vendors alike. Concerns about online security and the threat of fraud are encouraging both Buyers and Vendors to migrate to well established Brokerage firms to market their boats as well as mange the transaction. Ancasta has spent a great deal of time and energy in ensuring our processes provide our customers with a secure environment to buy and sell their yachts. Ancasta are conscious of the threats and are constantly improving both our own actions and procedures as well highlighting the issues to both customers and the broader industry itself. Buyers prefer buying from Ancasta due to this reputation and Vendors see this as one of the many reasons to list their boats with us. One area of our operation that does not receive the recognitionit deserves is Ancasta’s Commissioning and Aftersales service. Without doubt the Ancasta

team provide the very best in commissioning, after sales care, spare parts and warranty. There is a regular flow of correspondence across my desk from customers praising our team. It is such an important part of any boat owning experience and if you can get it right from the start, the experience for both customer and indeed ourselves is terrific. With this in mind we have continued to invest in this side of the business and it is great to see that investment providing the return we were after. Sailing just got faster Grand prix yacht racing in the UK will enter a new era in 2016 with the first full circuit for the FAST 40+ class, following its debut at the Royal Southern YC’s AVEVA September Regatta. Implicit in its name, the FAST 40+ aims to perform at the faster end of the monohull performance spectrum – a welcome step away from past rules that encouraged teams to spend money making boats go slower. The FAST 40+ should also serve to rekindle high end Grand Prix keelboat racing in the UK.

Effectively the class will be half-way between what currently exists in the UK and the top level Med-based circuits. So while, for example, boats competing in 2016 Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup will typically sail with a maximum of two pros on board (technically six per three boat team) and in the Med Maxi 72s, TP52s and RC44s have fully pro crews, excluding the ownerdriver in most cases, the FAST 40+s will also be owner-driver and up to five of the 11 crew can be ISAF Group 3 pros.

RACE CIRCUIT 2016

The FAST 40+ is a box rule and for its first season this has been widened to be as inclusive as possible. So first generation Ker 40s such as Keronimo will be grandfathered in. They typically have an IRC TCC of 1.1911.202, whereas the FAST 40+ TCC range after 2016 will be 1.210-1.270. Similarly the length range is 12.0-12.6m, but has been increased to 13.3m for 2016 to include the American Ker 43 Otra Vez. New designs must be 12.6m. There are additional formulae restricting displacement:length ratio and a ‘speed ratio’ (IRC TCC²/hull length), both aimed at preventing long heavy boats. To date 12 teams have signed up to compete on the first FAST 40+ circuit in 2016. As many as five will be campaigning former GP42s (the high-tech boats that once raced as the B-division to the TP52s in the Med), the best known example being Mike Bartholomew’s Tokoloshe II. Others include Tony Dickin’s Jubilee and, from Scotland, Steve Cowie’s latest Zephyr. However, in a particularly encouraging move reminiscent of the Admiral’s Cup of old, owners keen to join British sailing’s latest class are buying new boats. The most prolific are the Ker 40+s, built by McConaghy Boats. Following the debut of Sir Keith Mills’ Invictus this summer, so Andrew Pearce (previously owner of a Mk1

Ker 40) has purchased one as has Pace owner, Johnny Vincent. They are joining the likes of two time Commodores’ Cup winner Anthony O’Leary, whose new Antix is a modified Ker 40, lighter with a deeper draft and James Neville, whose latest INO is a Judel-Vrolijk designed HH42. The 2016 FAST 40+ circuit comprises five championship events, including the Vice Admirals’ Cup, the IRC Nationals and Cowes Week, plus two stand-alone events, the FAST 40+ Nationals being run by the Royal Southern YC over 16-18th September and a final event run by Hamble River Sailing Club over 8-9 October. These are all inshores around the Solent, but there is the possibility of offshores and taking the class to Cork Week/Scottish Series in the future. While the UK circuit looks set to have boats from Europe, Scandinavia, the USA and New Zealand competing in 2016, FAST 40+ Class President Robert Greenhalgh hopes that the class gets adopted globally, with the prospect of holding international championships in the future. Winter Training Tips with

Strength & Conditioning As race yachts get quicker, more advanced and physically more demanding, it’s becoming even more important to make sure you and your crew are strong, fit and healthy for the racing season ahead. Make the most of your winter training with these top tips from Pinnacle PT. Strength and Conditioning Coaches to Volvo Ocean Race crews, Sailing Olympians and National Champions, the team at Pinnacle PT are well equipped to advise you on how best to maximise your off season and make sure you perform on the water next year.

Before you start

Your off-season is a great opportunity to analyse how well you performed onboard this year, what you need to improve and the steps that you need to take to make those improvements a reality. To get the best results first establish your baseline strength and fitness through some appropriate testing and analyse your nutrition and lifestyle. This is important to establishing which training programme is best suited to you. Then set out some goals for the season ahead and plan the steps you will take in order to get there. It’s also important to decide how you will measure your progress throughout your training.

2. Squats – Good for: Quads, Hamstrings, Glutes

4. Chin Ups – Good for: Lats, Rhomboids, Biceps, Abdominals

Squats will enhance your leg strength and power as well as your abdominal muscles and lower back. Make sure you squat low to strengthen the VMO (Vastus Medialis Oblique), which is important for supporting the knees and reducing the risk of injuries. Squats and Deadlifts combined will provide your body with a strong foundation. And remember, you are only as strong as the foundations you lay down.

Chin ups are really good for increasing levels of functional strength in your arms, back and abs. These muscles are key to movements such as grinding and hiking so chin ups are a brilliant exercise for all sailing crew.

3. Split Squats – Good for: Quads, Hamstrings, Glutes This unilateral movement will help to make sure your body is balanced and reduce the risk of injury. Split squats can also help develop dynamic flexibility in your hips and ankles; vital for moving around a racing yacht with ease.

5. Rows – Good for: Rhomboids, Rear Deltoids, Lats, Biceps Rows will train similar muscles to the Chin Up, but in a horizontal plane as opposed to a vertical plane. Rows will help you to develop good posture and strengthen the muscles in the back of the body that stabilise the shoulders and keep them strong and healthy. 6. External Rotation – Good for: Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor This small movement has big benefits. External Rotation exercises will develop strength and stability in your shoulders, and more specifically, muscles of the Rotator Cuff which are vital for roping pulling, hoisting and grinding.

Strength Exercises

Here are six strength exercises that should provide you with a good baseline for your winter training and help you prepare for next year’s sailing season… 1. Deadlifts Good for: Hamstrings, Glutes, Lower Back, Lats, Rhomboids and Traps Deadlifts work the entire posterior chain, which will help improve your strength, power, posture and grip. This exercise is also great for your lower back; vital for reducing risk of injury in training and competition.

Conditioning Exercises

Your ability to work hard and recover quickly is critical to your performance on the water. Whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sailing lots of short races or taking on a longer, endurance based event, the ability to deliver and sustain your strength and power will set you apart from the rest and reduce injuries. Here are some top exercises to get your conditioning up to scratch... 1. Standing Rope Arm Over Arm Pull Pulling a weight or sledge with a rope will condition muscles in your upper and middle back, as well as your abdominals and forearms. Sample Session: 10 metres arm over arm pull from standing with running push back for 10mins 2. Unilateral Farmers Walks This exercise involves walking with a strong posture whilst carrying a heavy weight in one hand. This will develop lower body strength while also working the obliques, grip and traps. Sample Session: Walk 10 metres with an appropriate weight in one hand. Swap arms and repeat. Do this three times before resting for 90 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times.

3. Prowler / Sled Sprints Pushing a weighted sled (also known as a prowler) is great for conditioning the lower body and developing speed. Sample Session: 30 seconds at max effort, 30 seconds rest. Repeat 5-8 times. 4. Grinding Quick and sustained grinding effort is essential onboard any yacht and grinding practice can enhance your performance considerably. At Pinnacle PT we use a grinding machine from Wattbike UK which helps our athletes to measure their speed and power. Sample Session: Peak Power for 5 second bursts. 2 minutes rest. Repeat 10 times. 5. Rowing Rowing uses almost every major muscle group in your body. It works the lats, quads, hamstrings, glutes, abs, obliques, lower back, shoulders, biceps and triceps. By using so many muscles at once, your heart rate elevates considerably and it makes it much more efficient than running or spinning which primarily uses only the lower body. Sample Session: 3 minutes at 20 strokes per minute (spm). 1 minute rest. Repeat 5 times.

With a background in engineering and ship building has sailing always been a passion for you?

Sailing has not just always been my passion but a family passion.

Why make the recent move from Dufour to Beneteau?

My grandfather was an hydraulic engineer interested in sailing and he started by designing and building the first family boat on his own.

By working in the marine business with different brands and positions over the last years you realise that there is no other place with better resources, organisation and people than Beneteau to work with. I am really honoured to being able to define the next generation of the best known sailing brand in the world and that I have the opportunity to transform my passion and ideas into products that hopefully will be appreciated and sailed all over the world.

He has transmitted that passion to my father who is, besides an excellent sailor and my private consultant, an architect who started his career by designing a trimaran for his dissertation and then ended up working for Spadolini Studio, a prestigious firm at that time in the marine business. So I am probably simply the result of all this passion, just to make you understand the first picture my parents keep at home of me, only one month old, is inside a boat, from there dinghy, keel racing yachts lots of family cruising. Then, probably following the path of my grandfather, I was interested in creating and understanding the principles of design and at 15 I said to my parents, I found my school and next summer we will all go to England and we will visit it. It was Southampton University and from there my last 20 years have been great fun and they run away extremely fast: school, German Frers, Grand Soleil, Dufour and today Beneteau.

It seems there are exciting new concepts coming from the Beneteau design room. In your view, what is the future for the brand, how do you keep the product current? We are working on several projects with a new and exciting five year business plan that will accelerate new product launches in the upcoming years. We have the widest product offer available in the market with three ranges Sense, First and Oceanis. On top of that we are launching the Oceanis Yachts, a completely dedicated range of yachts starting at 53 feet that will be able to deliver to our customer a higher level of finish and quality.

Can you enlighten our readers with some information about any of the exciting new projects that you are working on? Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say that for the time being we stick with the 41.1 and 62 that are the two new models that will be presented this year. The first product that we will be launching is the new Oceanis 41.1 It will be presented at Paris boatshow, Dusseldorf and Miami. It is the first boat of the new generation of Oceanis and it has already integrated the three Pâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Performance/Personalisation/Price that will be the base of our new strategy. Performance because we want to show and prove that the new Oceanis will sail faster. To give you an idea, for the same sail area of the older 41 the new one is almost 600kg lighter. Personalisation because we deliver four different layouts and two different wood options and each can have three different finishes so in total we present 24 different alternatives of the same product. Price, last but not least, because the level of competence of this company has allowed us to develop and industrialise boats better than anyone

else, thus reducing the waste and guaranteeing a continuous quality. Concerning the Oceanis Yacht 62 it is a new class on itsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; own but where the principles explained above will fit as well. The level of finish and the quality of material used and options will be higher and in line with the needs of a customer of this size of boats. At the same time the industrialisation and engineering applied to this project will allow us to come with a very competitive offer.

Perhaps evolution will lead to the bow becoming fuller and fuller (scow) and will enable new and revolutionary interior concepts as well as faster boats. We are still not quite there yet and the right balance between elegance and functionality is still very far away to be found but we never give up in forward thinking. From the current range, which model would you own? There is not one perfect boat but several good ones for the purpose, if I consider where and how I spend most of my sailing time recently and if I had to pick, I personally love the 45 since I believe it is the perfect size for a family cruiser that I would like to own but if I can dream big I would buy a Sense 55. What do you envisage yacht design to look like in the next ten years? The construction technology has and will play an incredible role for future evolution. Weight saving will allow us to see further development to sail faster and in an even more stable and secure way than today.

Take your sailing up a gear, or even four... Advanced Rigging now sell the new Trimmer and four speed Grinder winch range from Pontos. The 4-speed GRINDER and an automatic 4-speed TRIMMER for day sailing or racing, are designed to improve sail handling and reduce winching eﬀort.

PONTOS WINCH TRIMMER

The Trimmer is used at first in exactly the same way as a conventional 2-speed winch:start winching in the highest gear, then reverse the rotation of the winch-handle to engage the lower gear. Keep going until the sail is trimmed, but getting in the last few inches of a genoa sheet can end up as a real struggle. However, if you are using a Trimmer, at this point the Pontos patented clutch mechanism engages. Changing the rotation of the winch handle again automatically brings the two lowest ratios into use. This enables you to deal with heavy sheet loads with far less effort than is possible with conventional two-speed winches. Often, final trimming can be completed just using your fingertips. Sail trimming in a firm breeze is no longer restricted to the strongest on board, and during a passage crew fatigue is greatly reduced.

Many yacht owners are eventually faced with the fact that their yacht’s sheet and halyard loads are exceeding the crew’s capacity to winch. Until now there have been three main options: only sail when there is a stronger, often younger crew available; fit expensive electric winches, with all the associated cabling, switching and battery capacity issues; or sell the boat and buy another which is within the crew’s capability. The PONTOS Trimmer now provides a cost-effective and efficient alternative solution to these problems.

Low Maintenance

BEYOND the refit When Hamble Yacht Services Refit & Repair (HYS RR) was asked to transform an old, dilapidated 82ft (25m) Tecnomar Motor Yacht into an up-to-date luxurious superyacht, they dedicated all of their passion, skill and expertise into turning the owner’s dream into a reality. Highly customised to the owner’s unique specifications and style, this project was one of a kind, that stood out from all of the rest. One which the whole team and the owner are immensely proud. Here we take a look behind the scenes of one of HYS RR’s biggest refit projects to date.

The Choice to Renovate

The fifteen year old motor yacht arrived in the UK in a state of extreme disrepair with a dated, dark wood interior and sun bleached exterior, but the yacht’s new owner wanted to turn this run-down vessel into a luxurious and relaxing space where he could

entertain his friends, spend time with his family and escape his high pressured and busy work schedule. Although the owner had the choice of buying a new yacht, he chose to renovate so that he had the flexibility to customise everything to suit his needs and wants exactly; the finish had to be modern, of the highest quality and entirely unique.

Full Service and Convenient Location

The yacht’s owner chose HYS RR to complete the project for many reasons. The space available in the yard, a big enough shed to house the vessel for twelve months and the expertise and skill available to fully customise the boat were some of the attractions. It was also due to the yard’s convenient location in Hamble,

just a couple of hours from London so that the owner was able to visit the yacht on a regular basis. As a result the owner was fully involved with the transformation from start to finish.

Stripped Back

To get things started, HYS RR carried out an extensive survey with independent inspectors to compile a full inventory and assessment of what equipment would need to be updated to make the vessel fully seaworthy and to meet the new standards required by the owner and his family. The next stage was to strip back the interior to its bare shell so that the owner could see the space available inside and give him the ability to start setting out his own vision for the future of the yacht and fully personalise every aspect of the boat’s design. The owner had lots of ideas of how he wanted the

▼Installation of Seakeepers finished boat to perform as well as look, so the HYS RR team worked closely with him and his family to ensure all of their needs and wants were catered for. Over the next 12 months the HYS RR team worked relentlessly to bring this tired and run down yacht back to life, and to the exact specification of the owner’s wishes. Using all of their skilled labour in house as well as working with external specialists, the project was a synchronisation of passion, innovation and hard work to create an end result that everyone could be proud of.

State of the Art Systems

Much of the yacht’s technical equipment was either serviced or replaced dependent on its condition. Every effort was made to keep the existing equipment where possible but no expense has been spared on making sure the yacht has the best and most advanced systems on board including the installation of two Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilising units. These will reduce roll by up to 80% when the boat is at sea, making sure everyone onboard is comfortable and safe. A full Raymarine package was also fitted and all of the electrics and plumbing updated to the highest standards.

First Impressions

From the outside, “Beyond” looks like new. All of the sunbleached beige topsides have been refurbished and resprayed in Crystal Metallic SIlver and all of the teak decking has been replaced by HYS RR’s expert teak fitters. At night, beautiful variable coloured underwater LED lights illuminate the water below and on the transom the custom made backlit name badge sparkles.

Initially we were going to erect a canvas bimini but we ended up creating a fully customised moulded hardtop bimini complete with smart and modern seating for the flybridge. The interior layout was largely kept the same but most of the furnishings, fittings and equipment were refurbished or replaced to bring it right up to date and give the vessel a new lease of life. All of the wooden panels and fittings have been re-sprayed to a high gloss finish and this bright white backdrop is embellished with vivid pops of red and orange and classically retro 1970’s art

and accessories including Gerald Laing pop art, gold edged furniture and bold geometric patterned carpets, cushions and wall panels. The 1970’s inspired design is truly unique and individual to the client; we are almost certain there is no other motor yacht out there like it. Every detail of the finishing has been attended to with care and attention and every shade of colour has been meticulously matched to ensure a harmonious look throughout. All of the furnishings are of the highest quality and genuine 1970’s light fittings were fitted to complete the look. Despite its retro appearance, the vessel is fitted out with all of the mod cons you’d expect including a modern galley with stainless steel fittings, a designer fridge, dishwasher and washing machine as well as air conditioning and LED lighting throughout. Most of the window frames and door fittings were refurbished but custom built Corian toilets and vanity units add an extra touch of luxury to the living areas. “It has been an incredible transformation and it is great to see such a different take on a luxury yacht and a personalised

refit that is truly unique and like no other we’ve ever seen. When we sprayed everything white, we didn’t expect to then see colourful trimmings, fabrics and colours come into play but they all look fantastic.” Malcolm Hearnden – General Manager. Now complete, “Beyond” will be undertaking sea trials over the next few months before she is shipped back to the Mediterranean where the owner and his guests can enjoy the yacht in its new and improved splendour. The whole project was a labour of love for everyone involved and the benefits of refitting a yacht instead of commissioning a new build are clear; from fitting the best onboard systems and state of the art technology and engineering, to choosing bespoke fabrics and customising fixtures and fittings, a yacht refit gives you the freedom to create a boat that is truly unique to you, fully meets your wishes and desires and that you can enjoy and cherish indefinitely.

On release Herbert Hall was described by the leading wine writer Matthew Jukes as “the finest debut English Sparkling Wine I have ever tasted” Herbert Hall Handmade English Sparkling Wines are regarded as among the finest in the UK and internationally. Since its establishment in 2009 this boutique winery has consistently won the praise of leading wine writers and within just a few years is to be found on wine lists alongside the world’s great wines. During the Summer of 2007 Nicholas Hall returned to the place of his childhood near the village of Marden in Kent to establish a vineyard and winery. He chose a unique ten-acre parcel of land that has been farmed by his family for four generations, having been originally settled by his greatgrandfather, Herbert Hall, in the 19th Century. This warm, sheltered site was the first land that Herbert owned and he always maintained that it produced the earliest and best fruit of any site that he ever farmed. Today as a vineyard, with its gravel-seamed clay soil and sunny, south-facing slope,

Herbert’s belief holds true; planted with Chardonnay (40%), Pinot Noir (30%) and Pinot Meunier (30%). The winery produces hand-made, site-specific sparkling wines that express the soil and meso-climate of the vineyard. Nicholas is inspired by the sustainable artisan techniques that his great grandfather would have known and is committed to low-yields and the use of physical labour and manual canopy management rather than chemicals to produce fruit of natural ripeness, intensity and flavour. He named the wine Herbert Hall in honour of his great grandfather. Alongside Nicholas, the winemaking team comprises Peter Morgan and Kirsty Smith. Together they are concerned with capturing the distinctive quality of the fruit, grown organically in this unique corner of the Garden of England. Herbert Hall wines are typically elegant, with intense fruit on the palate and a fine, silky mousse. Whole-bunch pressing is slow and gentle with cuvée and taille fractions separated by variety. Temperature controlled primary fermentation takes place in steel tanks with 10% of the chardonnay fermented separately in oak barrels. Cold s tabilisation and blending are carried out during the winter before bottling for secondary fermentation in the Spring. Wine is matured on lees for 18 months before riddling and disgorging. Herbert Hall is a small production, sparkling wine, with each bottle individually hand-dated and initialed on release. It has been one of the English wine industry’s great success stories, earning a place on many of England’s top wine lists and receiving exceptional praise from leading critics.
