Welcome to our Autumn edition of the ‘The Ancasta Collection’.

The summer is passing us quickly and thoughts now look towards the boat show season and indeed next year’s boating season. In the UK we have enjoyed a very good summer especially in April, May, June and July and while August has not been as good, the long term forecast has September offering some further good weather.

This good weather combined with the brightening economic environment is having a very positive impact on the boating business. The last 3-4 years feel like we have been in hibernation, however Spring has sprung and clearly the appetite for boating is back on the agenda.

Ancasta has enjoyed a late summer spur of activity on both new and used boats which points

well towards the boat show season which kicks off in September. Our focus is on Cannes boat show followed

by Southampton and then for Ancasta Yachts, there is the Monaco Boat Show.

At these shows we have a great deal of new product across all the brands Ancasta represents. Southampton will be the first show we will have with Beneteau Power which we are approaching with a modicum of optimism. The product is very good, well designed, well-built and very well suited to the UK market.

Our initial efforts in marketing the ranges have been very well received by the Ancasta faithful.

It has been a busy summer period for Ancasta.

In addition to bedding down Beneteau Power, we have, re-located our office in Palma to a new high profile location. Lagoon Catamarans have launched their new power cats which are very interesting and Ancasta Yachts has had a very busy time not only selling but listing a fabulous collection of yachts (see page 58-61).

HYS continue to play a critical role in our sales efforts. Our in-house ability to service, repair, customise or just advise on all things technical, is well received by our customers. The perfect example of this is an Oceanis 48 which an Isle of Man

charity has bought. Part of the contract required HYS to design and install a number of changes including a wheel chair lift that enables wheel chair bound crew to be taken down below, as well as lifting them on to deck. All in six seconds! It is a brilliant piece of design from our own technical team and provides a terrific benefit to a great project. You can see this at the “Try A Boat” event at this year’s Southampton Boat Show.

Like new boats, Brokerage has seen an upswing. Our listings continue to grow and our sales reflect that. Pricing still plays a major part, however presentation and the purchase / sale process play a very important role.

We know this and continue to improve all aspects of marketing our brokerage boats. The Ancasta Autumn Collection provides both vendors and purchasers with great incentives to help put buyers and boats together.

SUMMER RACE REVIEW

Ireland Take Victory in this Year’s Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup and the KERS remain at the front.

This year’s Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup saw nine participating teams and took place out of Cowes from the 19th to Saturday 26 July.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s biennial flagship event caters for national teams with amateur crews. This year boasted two more teams than we saw in 2012. With 27 boats in total, five were KER designs and while there was some fierce competition enjoyed between the English,

Scottish, Irish and the four visiting French teams, the Irish undoubtedly lead the way with two of their three boats being designed by Jason KER. Their formidable team comprised of Anthony O’Leary’s Ker 39 Antix, Marc Glimcher’s McConaghy Ker 40 Catapult and Michael Boyd and Niall Dowling’s Grand Soleil 43 Quokka 8. Together they scored the most comprehensive victory in the 22 year history of the

Commodores’ Cup. The team included American Marc Glimcher who had brought his `turboed’ Ker 40 Catapult over from the USA and rating-wise Catapult was the fastest boat at this year’s regatta and across the 27 boat fleet finished highest placed individual boat.

A hearty congratulations to the Irish who finished the regatta on 268 points, with an unprecedented lead of 173.5 points.

A week after the Commodores’ Cup, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week (which produced a couple of our own ‘winners’) was again, considered a triumphant success for the organisers.

Participants enjoyed a week of great sailing.

For the second year running, Adam Gosling’s Yes! a Corby 36 took overall first place honours for Black Group; the biggest prize in Cowes Week. Second was ETB Tyres Just Like That, and third overall was the Beneteau First 40.7 ‘Incognito’. Class One saw Moana a Beneteau 47.7 take FIRST Place and also receive the honour of being fifth overall in Black Group. Erivale III the KER 39, another Ancasta listing, took third place in the same class.

We were pleased to see that the Beneteau fleet maintained a strong presence in the results.

Of the 84 Beneteaus which took part in the event 18 were in IRC Class 2 and La Reponse a First 40 took third place.

Other results from Cowes Week included in Class 0 the first five boats were all customers of HYS. Baraka a KER 40 was 5th. In IRC Class 1 Moanna, a Beneteau 40.7 achieved 1st place.

With First 40’s coming 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Overall Cowes Week this year was a great success for Ancasta and HYS customers.

Customisation of a Beneteau Oceanis 48 for Sailing for the Disabled As a lot of you will have seen on our website and indeed, in our last magazine, Ancasta and Hamble Yacht Services have been working side by side to customise a Beneteau Oceanis 48 for the Isle of Man charity Sailing for the Disabled.

‘Pride of Man III’ arrived as planned at the end of July, and will feature at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show in the ‘Try a Boat’ event on berths M026 – 32.

The modernising process began immediately upon arrival and Hamble Yacht Services meticulously applied their adaptations to make the boat suitable by first removing the standard companionway entrance and replacing it with an electric wheelchair stair lift. The lift is a completely bespoke piece of equipment designed by Ainslie Hunt HYS’s Project Manager and HYS General Manager Malcolm Hearnden. The design was then

manufactured and produced by the in-house team of experts at HYS, who in addition, removed the standard cockpit table and refitted it with a sliding mechanism to allow improved access for wheelchair users. Further customisation included the installation of additional grab rails and entry to the aft heads compartment was widened to allow crew members with restricted mobility easier access. While the basic mechanics of sailing remain the same, the entire project has been all about increased accessibility and this is why the Oceanis 48 provided the perfect boat, because the spacious deck layout already lends itself to be easily managed by only two people.

Motor Yacht

The Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht will have her world premiere in Cannes during the Yachting Festival, after which, she will be presented in Genoa and Barcelona.

Following the Barcelona Boat Show she will begin her world tour; crossing the Atlantic to the Miami Boat Show in February 2015 and then continuing across the Pacific to be exhibited at the Hainan and Singapore Boat Shows in April 2015.

Our Lagoon Brand Manager, Graham Laver explains how Lagoon, with the 630, are providing true blue water power boat cruising. “This is a boat for seeing the world, not just a boat for others to see. This is what sets it apart from its competitors who are mainly building short range, high

consumption motorboats with two hulls. The 630 is for people who have done their share of fast motor boating and want to extend their horizons much, much further. I am sure it will also appeal to sailors who want guaranteed arrival times, while still enjoying the process of getting there. This yacht combines the charm of sailing with the practicality of a motor yacht.�

We know from other Lagoon designs how well the interior works and as such there are no major changes apart from some cosmetic enhancements which will bring the boat closer in line with power boating expectations, while remaining highly practical.

The standard engines are twin 260hp Volvos, with 300hp as an option her new owners can expect to cruise between 12 to 16 knots with the smaller engine option.

With 3000 litres of fuel, she will have transatlantic capability.

Under the water the boat has long shallow keels for strength and to protect the stern gear.

Following extensive tank testing, careful attention has been paid to the hull design at the aft sections to maximise efficiency and economy.

Q

Alastair, taking on such a reputable division of the company and steering it through often unpredictable times, has been no mean feat. How did your background prepare you for the role of Ancasta Yachts Manager?

A: Having left University, I worked on super yachts for three years before beginning my career with Ancasta 16 years ago in 1998.

I began as a trainee broker and after four years of securing a sound knowledge of the process, I moved to head office in Port Hamble where I assumed the role of Brand Manager for Bavaria Motor Boats. We were the UK’s sole dealers for six years and it was during those ‘heady’ but incredibly busy days (220 new models in six years) that I cut my teeth on dealing and trading in the new boat sector. When the recession took hold, Ancasta started dealing with a lot of bank repossessions so I began looking after and over- seeing the banks’ interests.

Q

Did this contribute towards the eventual establishment of Ancasta Yachts?

A: Yes, definitely. Ironically, the harsh times saw us taking on a couple of extremely large and high profile yachts including the famous 55 mtr schooner Elena, amongst other notable luxury sailing and motor

boats. It was then that we recognised a need and definite niche in the market to move up to higher valued boats and cater for high net worth individuals. We have since taken on many good listings which have resulted in successful sales including Ngoni the Baltic 97, and as a result of that, Satu the 90 ft sports fisher. Recently Ancasta Yachts were appointed as the central agents for the 40 mtr Royal Huisman Ketch ‘Antares’ (photo right) which we are currently marketing. I also have the pleasure of being the Brand Manager for CNB’s beautiful semi- custom yachts and the stunning modern classic brand by Fairlie Yachts. Both these brands maintain an extremely popular and dominating place in today’s luxury market, and I will be at the Cannes Boat Show representing CNB, as usual, this year.

The future is looking very bright for Ancasta Yachts. What do you think are the main contributing factors to your success?

A: I believe it lies in our ability to build and manage solid and loyal relationships with our clients, and source the right boats for the right people. We are also extremely fortunate to have the might of one of the UK’s leading shipyards, Hamble Yacht Services, behind us for refit services. In fact, I am just in the process of shipping a Tecnomar 85 from the Med to HYS for a very substantial refit. Our history, experience and reputation is what gives us the edge with our many contacts, and coupled with an in-house marketing department who deliver formidable campaigns, puts us in the unique position of being able to offer an immediate, bespoke and effective response. For our potential purchasers we come backed with the full package of exceptional technical expertise and sound market knowledge. We are also able to advise our clients accordingly on structured finance, berthing, insurance, management and crew. It has been a fantastic year so far for the Yachts division, and at the moment we feel as if we are constantly on the edge of something even more exciting, bigger and better than before.
