Positive Ageing Month
Introduction
Welcome to the Positive Ageing Month edition of ‘News for You’. I am thrilled to announce that this October Positive Ageing Month is back for another year to celebrate the contribution those aged 50 and over make to the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey. To celebrate, we have organised a festival of events and activities to showcase the many ways residents can live happier, healthier and more connected lives. Our goal is to work in partnership to make Antrim and Newtownabbey a place where people can live full, active, valued and healthy lives.
Following on from last year’s success, the Tea and Treats roadshow will be visiting an area near you again. Turn to page 5 for details on how to register for a relaxed session with a
cuppa, sweet treat and fun ways to think about your health and wellbeing.
The Positive Ageing Month booklet has been a treasure trove of activities and this year we have even more groups open to new members and waiting to welcome you. Interested in a group but unable to attend in October? Don’t worry, most groups run September to June and would be happy to welcome you at any time.
This booklet shares personal stories and helpful services, however we are always working to make it better and would love to hear what you think. Please take a few moments to fill out the quick feedback survey on page 11. Your opinion matters to us.

Local connections spotlight on u3a antrim
Hilary from u3a Antrim shared insights into the group and how others can get involved.
Tell us about your group.
u3a is a UK-wide movement made up of groups running in local towns. u3a Antrim has been running for 12 years. Members can explore new ideas, skills and persuits together. It is a voluntary group home to many different activities. Men and women no longer in full time employment, who are semi retired or retired can come to learn together, make friends and have fun. There is a small membership fee to join the group.
What can someone expect if they join u3a?
Members of the group meet on the fourth Friday of every month (September - May) in Antrim Library at 10.30am. At the monthly meeting they socialise together and hear from a speaker on a topic of interest. Throughout the month a range of satellite groups meet. These are organised by members with a particular interest and include a Bridge group, Dine Out group, Environmental History group and Book Club meeting across the Antrim area. The satellite groups can be set up around any topic of interest.
The group also hosts visits and outings regularly for the group members to enjoy together.
Why
would you encourage people to join u3a?
"I would encourage anyone to join because of the friendships I have made. I love meeting like-minded people and the social aspect of being part of the group. I would encourage anyone interested to come to a friday meeting for a taster session."
For more information contact Hilary, T. 07748 061552 or call into the monthly meeting to hear more about the group.

Ageless giving the Importance of volunteering through the years
Sadie has been volunteering for over 5 decades. Lets hear why she loves it so much and why she would encourage others to try it.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Sadie, I am 82 years young from Monkstown. I started volunteering when I was just 15 years old with a local girl guides. I then started volunteering with St John Ambulance which inspired me to care for others. Through my early years of volunteering, I gained valuable skills that helped me pursue my career in nursing. Even while working I continued to volunteer with St John and now in my retirement I give several hours per week to helping others.
What has your role been while volunteering with St John Ambulance?
Over the decades, I have held many roles within the organisation including the delivery of first aid courses and I qualified as a first aid examiner. Now in my retirement, I enjoy getting out of my house to visit many different groups and giving information about the fantastic work done by St John Ambulance. I have taken part in many first aid competitions and in 2005, I was honoured to receive an MBE for services to nursing and to St John.

Why do you continue to volunteer and would you encourage others to do it?
I continue to volunteer because I enjoy meeting and helping people. I enjoy passing on my knowledge and skills to others.
I would encourage others to volunteer, weather you are retired or just have a few hours to spare, because it is good for you. You can see what needs people have and it is a way of people looking after each other. For me, volunteering gives me a focus, a purpose and keeps me active.

Take a break take a seat In antrim
The Health and Wellbeing team is delighted to announce the launch of a new initiative, Take a Seat, aimed at giving residents greater confidence and freedom to move around the Borough.
Through this scheme, local businesses and community facilities are invited to provide a place to rest for anyone who may need it while shopping or passing by. Participating locations will display a clearly branded Take a Seat sticker, making it easy for residents to identify supportive venues.
Importantly, individuals making use of this scheme are under no obligation to make a purchase or use the services offered by participating businesses. The focus is simply on ensuring that everyone feels welcome and supported while out in the community.

and newtownabbey
We are pleased to share that more than 40 businesses have already signed up, with further interest continuing to grow.
By working together, we are creating a more inclusive, accessible, and supportive Borough—one seat at a time.
A full listed of premises participating can be viewed by visiting antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk /take-a-seat
Businesses and facilities can express interest in joining the campaign by contacting Environmental Health E. envhealth@ antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk T. 028 9034 0160
