It has been a delight to meet so many people right across the Borough who give so willingly of their time to benefit others and make this a great place to live. For example, I recently attended a number of the World Biggest Coffee Mornings in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, a very deserving charity. Secondly, I wish to pay tribute to all the volunteers who give of their time for the Parkruns. I have enjoyed taking part in the Parkrun both in Antrim and at V36; this is a great event that I would encourage you to think about taking up. I especially would like to thank the many runners as they passed me with a word of encouragement to keep going!

Also, a warm and heartfelt congratulations to Jonathan Rea who made history recently by becoming the first person to ever win the World Superbike Championship three years in a row, claiming the title of Triple Crown and putting Antrim and Newtownabbey on the world stage. The atmosphere was electric as we celebrated his win at the homecoming event in Sixmile Leisure Centre in Ballyclare.

RECYCLE THIS CHRISTMAS Over the festive period we generate so much more waste including packaging from presents and food waste leftover. Below is a reminder of what can be recycled.

NO Wrapping paper.

YES: blue bin / triplestack / kerbside box

Cards that contain glitter and non paper parts.

Christmas cards (but not if there is glitter and non paper parts).

Polystyrene.

Chocolate and biscuit boxes; Large tins and plastic containers for sweets/chocolates can be recycled. Foil cases, from mince pies etc. Cardboard boxes from toys, deliveries etc. separate plastic inserts from toys boxes but still place these in your recycling container. Remove other packaging materials from delivery boxes, e.g. polystyrene, packaging beads. Glass bottles and jars can be recycled in your triple stack/kerbside box or taken to your local recycling centre or bottle bank.

Decorations e.g. Tinsel, fairy lights. Please dispose of your real Christmas trees at any of the Councils five recycling centres where they are bulked and sent for composting.

LOVE FOOD, HATE WASTE Before you think about recycling your food waste, could it be transformed into a delicious dinner? On average a family of four throws out £60 of food per month, so why not try these tasty recipes. Share your photos on Facebook or Twitter and we will give you a free recipe book “Eat Well, Waste Less”.

TURKEY TOMATO GRATIN • 400g jar passata or tomato pasta sauce • 3 tablespoons double cream/crème fraiche. • Several thick slices of cooked turkey • 2 chopped mixed peppers (or any colour you have) • 1tbsp olive oil

• 250g sliced mushrooms • 2 slices of stale bread (crusts cut off) for breadcrumbs • Grated parmesan for topping

Mix the tomato passata or pasta sauce with the double cream or creme fraiche.

In a wide shallow dish, lay thick slices of leftover turkey.

Saute the peppers and mushrooms and layer on top of the turkey.

Pour over the creamy passata, top with breadcrumbs mixed with grated parmesan, and drizzle with a little olive oil.

Bake in a medium oven until the turkey is piping hot and the breadcrumbs are crisp and brown.

Christmas is a time when children are often surrounded by toys. With the excitement of the festive season, safety can be forgotten and unfortunately accidents can occur. Adults therefore have a responsibility to buy a present which is safe and suitable for children. Useful tips when selecting presents include: • Choose only quality toys from reputable shops. Remember a cheap toy isn’t a bargain if someone gets hurt! • Read the manufacturer’s advice.

While puppies are certainly cute, playful and great fun on Christmas day, they are a lifelong commitment, so whether you are considering taking on a new pup yourself, or buying one for someone else this Christmas, make sure you think it through before you buy! Enforcement Officers at Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council often find that while people have great intentions, the novelty of a new pup often wears off and the reality of responsible ownership hits home. January is our busiest time of year for dealing with poor animals which are left in the pound, or even worse, abandoned to their own fate.

DONATE A GIFT TO THE CHRISTMAS FAMILY APPEAL Mossley Mill and Antrim Civic Centre are acting as collection points for the Christmas Family Appeal which is organised by the Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul charities. Last year's appeal distributed over 30,000 gifts to children across Northern Ireland – all of which was made possible by the generosity of local people and organisations.

We would like to thank everyone who donated items to our last Foodbank Friday. Mayor, Councillor Paul Hamill and Chief Executive, Jacqui Dixon delivered the items to the foodbank at Oasis, Antrim on Friday 8 September. The response was fantastic and the foodbank staff were delighted with all of the donations made. The next Foodbank Friday will be on Friday 24 November and all items will be donated to Carnmoney Presbyterian Church foodbank. If you would like to get involved, just bring your items to Mossley Mill, Antrim Civic Centre or any of the leisure centres in our Borough. Items that can be donated include tins of soup or tins of meat, packets of pasta or rice, jars of sauces, tea or coffee, cereals, dried fruit or soup mix, jams and preserves, nappies and toiletries or anything else that is non-perishable.

• Consider what you would do if you did lose your water supply for a prolonged period of time. You need to have a contingency plan. • If you own a business and are shutting for a holiday period, you should make plans in the event of cold weather i.e. set your heating timer, have someone check the premises regularly. • Have the number of a plumber who knows where your property is and who is prepared to attend at night if needed. • Make sure you have adequate insurance to cover your property in the event of a burst pipe.

Keep Warm By keeping warm over the winter months you can help prevent colds, flu or more serious health problems like pneumonia. You can keep the heat in your home and costs down with insulation by doing the following: • fit draught-proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors • make sure your loft has insulation - any home with 4 inches (100 mm) or less should have it topped up • make sure wall cavities are insulated • insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes

Oil Stamp Saving Scheme Save for your oil heating costs through the Council’s Oil Stamp Saving Scheme.

Residents can pick up an oil stamp saving card at any of the participating retail outlets and purchase stamps with their weekly shopping, at a cost of £5 each. Stamps are placed on a savings card and then used as payment or part payment for oil at any of the participating oil companies. AA-00000

Flooding There is a heightened risk of flooding during winter as rainfall increases and snow and ice melt. To protect yourself, your property and to minimise damage, the following steps can be taken: • Move valuable possessions and electrical items to a safe place.

• Shut off gas and electricity at the mains point.

Oil Clubs

• Think about your escape route - particularly if you live in a bungalow.

Oil Clubs allow local residents to combine their orders for oil. Orders are placed with a community coordinator and must be placed by a specific date each month. Lower prices are negotiated with oil suppliers by buying larger quantities but all within the club get the same price per litre of oil, regardless of the quantity they order.

Eat well, KEEP active & stay in toucH A balanced diet will help keep you warm and healthy in the winter. Make sure you and your family eat at least one hot meal a day (soup is nutritious and warming and inexpensive to make or buy). Staying active is good for your health. Walking, for example, can be good for you. If the weather prevents you getting outside, stay active indoors like catching up on all the household tasks you've been putting off. Stay in contact with friends and family, especially if you've been stuck in the house for a few days. If you have elderly relatives or neighbours who might need help, please check up on them.

• Look out for pets and animals to keep them safe from flood water.

• Prevent access of water by using sandbags at entry points to the property, including outhouses and garages. • Don’t forget about outside - move your car to higher ground, move garden furniture to a safe place or higher ground, protect chemicals/fuel stored in garages or outhouses so they don’t spill into floodwater, secure oil tanks to ensure it does not drip into flood water, unplug exterior electrical appliances.

THINKING ABOUT INSTALLING A WOOD-BURNING OR MULTI-FUEL STOVE? With the winter weather upon us, many people will be considering the installation of a wood-burning or multifuel stove for that extra bit of heat and comfort. However, few people realise the checks they must do in advance to ensure their stove operates safely and efficiently. Use the following guide to make sure your wood-burning stove is safe and the right one for your home.

If you already have had a stove installed without making a Building Control application, you can make a retrospective application by calling the number below, visiting our website or calling into Mossley Mill or Antrim Civic Centre.

CE MARK

INSTALLER

Any stove you purchase must be labelled with a CE mark. This indicates that the stove meets current European safety standards and regulations and can legally be sold in the UK and Ireland.

It is recommended that you use a professional stove installer who can issue a Certificate of Compliance once they have completed a number of safety checks. You should discuss building control approval with your installer.

BUILDING CONTROL Many people are not aware that the installation of a stove requires a Building Control application. Whether you are installing a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove, whether in an existing fire place or fitting a standalone appliance, you need to make an application. There are regulations and guidance around for example, how the flue is fitted and terminated, the dimensions of the hearth, ventilation provided to the stove, the distance of the stove from combustibles and the provision of Carbon Monoxide alarms. This can affect the type of stove that is suitable for your dwelling. Make sure you discuss this with your installer before buying the stove. You must contact Building Control and make an application prior to the installation of a stove. An inspection of the stove installation will be carried out by a Building Control Surveyor by prior arrangement. The Surveyor will also want to see a Certificate of Conformance from your installer before they issue a completion certificate for the works carried out. If you donâ€™t make a Building Control application for the stove installation, it may affect the sale of your house.

SMOKE CONTROL AREAS There are several smoke control areas in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough. This means you will need to get a DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) exempt stove or only burn smokeless fuels such as anthracite, on a multi-fuel stove. You can look up your street on the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council website to find out if you live in a smoke control area antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/ SmokeControl

CARBON MONOXIDE If you have a woodburning or multi-fuel stove, a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm must be installed in your home. If your stove is not installed, maintained and used properly, CO may accumulate to dangerous and even deadly levels. Follow the manufacturerâ€™s instruction as to where the CO monitor should be located. Ensure your appliance is cleaned and serviced regularly.

CONDENSATION â€“ ADVICE FOR HOUSEHOLDERS It is well known that in recent years some houses and flats have suffered from condensation. Walls, ceilings, and sometimes floors become damp, discoloured and unpleasant as a result of mould growing on the surfaces.

WHY CONDENSATION OCCURS Condensation occurs when warm moist air meets a cold surface.

WHEN CONDENSATION OCCURS Condensation occurs usually in winter, because the building is cold and because windows are opened less and moist air cannot escape.

MOULD GROWTH Any sign of mould growth is an indication of the presence of moisture and if caused by condensation, gives warning that heating, structural insulation or ventilation, or all three may require improvement.

NEW BUILDINGS New buildings often take a long time before they are fully dried out and require extra heat and ventilation.

EFFECT OF INCREASED VENTILATION ON FUEL BURNING APPLIANCES If an occupier proposes to fix an extractor fan or otherwise change the ventilation in a room containing a gas or solid fuel appliance, they should obtain advice from the installer of the appliance about the risks from toxic fumes.

HOW CONDENSATION OCCURS Condensation can happen for short periods in bathrooms and kitchens because of the steamy atmosphere, and regularly for long periods in poorly heated bedrooms; also where ventilation and movement of air are restricted.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT CONDENSATION IN YOUR HOME?

1 Good ventilation of kitchens when cooking or when washing or drying clothes is essential. 2 Use the extraction fan. 3 Open all windows in your home to provide ventilation. 4 Avoid the use of portable paraffin or flue less gas heaters as far as possible. 5 Try to ensure that all rooms are at least partially heated. To prevent condensation, the heat has to keep room surfaces reasonably warm 6 Keep your thermostat at an average temperature.

A BALLYCLARE WELCOME FOR TRIPLE WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPION JONATHAN REA The atmosphere was electric in Ballyclare when triple World Superbike Champion, Jonathan Rea returned home for a celebration event. As well as the many Jonathan Rea fans, guests also included friends, family and local motorcycle club members. Speaking at the event, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Hamill commented; “Jonathan has achieved something amazing and well and truly put Northern Ireland on the world stage once again.

We are extremely proud to have him as one of Northern Ireland’s sporting ambassadors and there is no doubt that Jonathan is a great role model to many young people within our Borough.” Jonathan was overwhelmed with the reception he received; “I am blown away by the amount of people who have turned out this evening. I love coming home to Ballyclare and seeing all the familiar faces again. RUSHPARK IS BLOOMING!

Our parks team have worked closely with local groups, businesses and individuals over the summer months planting beautiful blooms in various locations across the Borough. The flower beds, hanging baskets and planters all helped to brighten up the local areas. As a result our towns and villages have picked up the following:

You may have noticed that the entrance to Rushpark estate on the Shore Road has become more prominent. We had a request from Rushpark Community Group to help them brighten up the entrance.

Randalstown: Best Small Town Award (Ulster in Bloom and NI Best Kept Award) Ballynure: Small Village Award, 3rd place (Ulster in Bloom) Merville Garden Village: Best Kept Large Housing Estate (NI Best Kept Award) Well done and thanks to everyone involved!

Consultation with the community group resulted in a raised hand carved flower bed being installed in September. The funding for this project was provided through the District Electoral Area (DEA ) Programme Macedon Area and permission was also provided from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. The new installation brightens up the entrance to Rushpark and the feedback received has been very positive.
