Functional Electrical Stimulation

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a therapy method where nerves are stimulated with electrical current via surface electrodes in order to cause a muscular contraction. The aim is to produce a functional movement for impaired limbs - perhaps paralysed by a spinal cord injury or stroke. Modern systems like the RehaMove FES systems have refined this idea and clinicians appreciate what can be done with this technology.

FES can enable muscles to be trained even if some or all voluntary control of them has been lost due to paralysis. Additionally, FES can support any remaining muscle control to complete a functional movement or to facilitate activities of daily living. The use of FES is scientifically proven for the following purposes:

• Relaxation of muscle spasms

• Prevention or retardation of disuse atrophy

• Increasing local blood circulation

• Maintaining or increasing range of motion
