Editor's Letter Hello there ACT Community! We hope that you are seeing brighter days and not just from the rays of an enthusiastic sun. One thing pushing those sticky sweaty heat filled moments along is choosing to believe the sun is shining so vividly because it too is excited for the city’s opening. Our past academic year has certainly seen high and low moments, but the best moment would have to be its conclusion as it marks the completion of the trials and tribulations surmounted and met with a still standing ACT Community. We are here and we are ready to fight against all odds. Although it might seem we blow in the breeze, a foundation to remember is this community. A community that grows stronger by the day. How will you use those connections? Remember, relationships are not always about what you can get but also what you can give. During this time, we saw the development of our social ties, commonalities, differences, mental health happenings, cultural traditions, selfawareness, exploration of the new, and understanding of past events as a method to solidify connection and broaden perspective. What will we do with these findings? Will they be pushed down as we try to forget the year where the world stood still? Or will we use them as weights to build our rescillency? This past year and a half should be a reference not a playbook for the future. Despite treacherous natural causes, flowers continue to sprout, trees sway on, and nature’s dance moves to the next eight-count. Who is to say we can’t continue to grow, bloom, and repeat. Thank you for your time and patience. Best,
Leemu Kutu Hall

ANATOLIA GARDENS This installment delves into Anatolia and ACT's charming campus and its diverse greenery. Though they might seem like pretty plants to pass by, they have a purpose, a history. Stop and take a look! From flatlands to lilac grooves, the campus has seen many forms. Formation and flora's interrelation require homogeneity, wherein neither can flourish without the other's growth. For flora is like life, and though you
might try to control it, something else might spring up. When that happens, take a moment, breathe beside the garden to absorb the beauty that still stands; and when you're ready, eradicate that obstacle and begin your transformation.

ANATOLIA GARDENS "Creation of gardens depicts throughout the world an anthropogenic expression of recognizing the value of nature, trying to captivate it and incorporating it human habitats. A live green garden and park culture is part of the broader concept of cultural heritage and as such, it ought to be protected and enhanced. Lack of garden culture and education leads to everyday degradation and loss of parks and gardens in Greece, a concept relatively unknown to the public. The Gardens of Anatolia College are an excellent example of how nature ought to teach humans the real realm of life. "

I love Thessaloniki, and even though my college experience started during this difficult time, I was lucky enough to still live in this city. When things started opening up, how could I not take pictures as forever keepsakes? I hope these images are what we will be seeing in person for years to come. I wish we never have to witness Thessaloniki closed again, only lights, colors, and beautiful smiles everywhere. VASILIS P. Affiliate to the ACT Community

CONGRATS OF

STUDYING ABROAD DURING THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC
Persistence, Patience, and the Power of Positivity Although we saw a challenging year, opportunities found a way to sprout from seemingly impossible situations.
Kutu Hall
ACT had the opportunity to both welcome and send students abroad this academic year. Katerina Ioannidou , who recently returned, attended Georgian Court University after winning the International Programs Office scholarship competition for her attendance. Qin Brunner, currently still in Thess, is a graduating senior from X , and he attended ACT’s Spring II and Summer 2021 programs. As this exchange happened during the pandemic, it calls into question what this looked like, the obstacles presented, and how or if this shaped their experience. “Due to the pandemic, I decided to postpone my study abroad semester and I ended up going in January 2021, when things were way better and more open in the states. I wasn't sure how the situation with Covid would affect my experience, but I decided to go and not lose such a great opportunity. I did not regret it at all because it was definitely an incredible, life-changing experience”. Her words reiterate the importance of patience as a tool to muscle through uncertainty.
The same goes for Quin as he too was scheduled to study abroad in Fall 2020 , whose story of persistence and positive outlook shows that these tools aid in the growth of resilience.“ I arrived while the city was still in full lockdown so I had to quarantine and all the stores were closed. Once I got settled, everything was extremely navigable and I really think I came at the perfect time. The early lockdown made the city more approachable, as the restrictions eased I was able to join everyone else in the newly available activities and in venturing further out from the city.”
Going on, Quin illuminates a positive outlook on his experience with Covid restrictions and Greece. “I've spent more time locally than I might have if international travel were easier but have still managed to see some amazing spots in Greece. I enjoy hiking and wildflowers so the nearby mountains were quite a refuge in the spring.”This experience juxtaposed with Katerina’s in the States who said that when she got there, “There were way less restrictions in the states than in Greece. Some of the states that I visited had almost no restrictions at all and life was overall "back-tonormal" already”. The pair found themselves doing the reverse of one another, going into situations where restrictions are starkly different from their resident country.

Katerina enjoyed her time at Georgian Court as she described their campus as “beautiful and unique”, a nice environment for a student to live in. When asked about their time and if or how it molded them into a global citizen, Katerina responded with, “Studying abroad in the states was a very nice and challenging experience. I got to travel to multiple states and experience different lifestyles. Seeing so many new places and meeting new people was definitely eye-opening; it helped me grow as a person”.
Quin describes ACT as gorgeous, paying special homage to the orchids that adorn the campus; and reveres the life-long friendships made during his time. His answer to the above question is, “Absolutely, having spent my entire life in the rural Midwest I've encountered tons of newness living in Thessaloniki. Existing outside of the spaces with which I am most familiar has allowed me to see them through different eyes. After all, you can't reflect on something while you're in it. This experience has substantially expanded my worldview and has shifted the trajectory of my life." The pair appreciate their eclectic experiences from the academic aspect to social and cultural encounters and contexts. Katerina and Quin are examples of being persistent, practicing patience, and maintaining a positive attitude. They knew that if they stayed safe and abided by the correct precautions their journey would be one to never forget. Welcoming the good and not so favorable, opened them up to fully immerse themselves in their temporary environments as if they were locals, expand their perspective, and prepare them for future obstacles to overcome.
"THIS EXPERIENCE HAS SUBSTANTIALLY EXPANDED MY WORLDVIEW AND HAS SHIFTED THE TRAJECTORY OF MY LIFE" Quin Brunner
As restrictions lift, so does the spirit of Thessaloniki! Check out this page for events occurring around the city. From documentary festivals, to open air concerts to book fairs and more, you can fill your days with Thess.
Enjoy what the city has to offer all while taking the correct precautions to stay safe.

THIS FALL THE DUKAKIS CENTER WILL HOST A VIRTUAL EXHIBITION of some of the banners and posters we have created since 2011 for events at the Center. A small team of volunteers is already exploring software and prototypes for what is hoped will be a novel experience.
The Dukakis Center has an archive of video clips and photographs from the events in question, although the principal display item will feature the banners, like the one above.
The project will entail designing the exhibition, choosing the material to feature, creating a digital template for the material, and thinking about visitor experience. The project will launch this summer and the exhibition will open in early November, 2021.
Accepting volunteers until September 10th dukakis-center@act.edu

"The Global Shapers Community is an initiative of the World Economic Forum. It’s a network of young people driving dialogue, action, and change around the world. We believe in a world where young people are central to solution building, policy-making, and lasting change. The Global Shapers Community is organized in Hubs. In each city, teams of Shapers self-organize to create projects that address the needs of their community. GLOBAL SHAPERS THESSALONIKI HUB FROM GRASSROOTS TO GLOBAL
"Our focus is the "Thessaloniki Thrive: Academy" project. It consists of 3 pillars. The first one is a Slack Community. There, experts from a range of subject areas share trends, job opportunities, and provide support and feedback about career pursuit and workplace challenges. The second pillar is our Coaching Programs. They focus on individuals sharing professional experiences within a group, getting on-the-spot applicable feedback and helpful tips for moving forward in their professional lives. The third one is our Educational Seminars. These seminars aim to train students and provide new skills and information to apply immediately in their professional lives."
You recently did a project for the Davos Lab initiative. Can you tell us what is it about?
"The Davos Lab is an initiative of the World Economic Forum for the celebrations of its 50th anniversary. Our project was the Davos Dialogues Podcast, a series of 4 episodes where we discussed with young leaders and industry experts about the Future of Politics, Net Zero, Inclusive Jobs, and Mental Health. With this project, we wanted to start the discussion between youth and experienced professionals, so both sides can exchange perspectives about the next steps to address these issues. The episodes are available on all major podcast streaming platforms and I highly recommend giving them a listen :D"
GLOBAL SHAPERS THESSALONIKI HUB FROM GRASSROOTS TO GLOBAL
This is a community composed of young people, do you believe this impacts the work that gets accomplished? "100%! I think people in their 20s are in a phase of their lives where they can be the most creative, challenge themselves, try new things, fail, and do it over again. Our generation has a lot of sensibilities, cares about the future of our world, and is actually taking action to have a positive impact. All of these characteristics are the core of our work here in the Hub but across the Global Shapers Community as well. "

GREEK BEACH HANDBALL AND ACT
The Greek Beach Handball Teams graced our ACT campus in the Sand Sports Court, concluding their training before they departed for competition. From the beginning of June 2021, the men's, women's and both boys and girls teams of the Young Age Competition (YAC), under 17, trained in preparation. Varna, Bulgaria is hosting EURO 2021 for Beach Handball , July 13-18, and YAC, July 8-11. We wish them luck and success as both men and women are defending their previous titles. In 2019, the men's team were the Gold Medalists of the Mediterranean Games in Patra, Greece. As for the women's Handball team, they were awarded the title of 2018 World Champions in Kazan, Russia. Both teams have high standards, created by their hard work and amazing talent, to meet and we are sure they will achieve and surpass any expectation put forth. In addition, the teams were interviewed by multiple news outlets, for instance, Atlas 100, Nova Sport, Brooch, and more. Check out some videos and articles below. Good Luck everyone!

John Cabot University, Rome Summer 2021 Exchange Program
Alexandra Kyriakidou ACT Freshmen Political Science and International Relations
Spring and Summer provides all, not only nature, with a chance to blossom into something immaculate, a limitless possibility. This year has and may continue to see character development from resiliency to intra/inter personal relations to emotional intelligence to technological skills, despite technology's adherence to work. The order of what once was and the lessons of now have been altered and morphed into methods of navigating in our world today. That being said, doesn’t Rome seem like a wonderful place for one to water their life with new experiences, people, and culture? ACT students Maria Liouliou and Alexandra Rasidaki Kyriakidou find themselves taking a stride on the Roman side this summer through the ACT Abroad Program with our partner school John Cabot University, as participants in the Summer exchange program. Feeding themselves with new experiences, meeting and befriending new people, while experiencing a culture both similar and different to their own.
COVID and the ramifications are, for sure, something to be cautious of as both girls wanted to ensure their safety, “It is definitely possible to protect ourselves while enjoying everything that Rome can offer” says Maria on her experience thus far. Both noted that the city has taken the necessary measures, similar to Greece, to assure everyone’s safety, allowing the city and its dwellers to remain careful and calm. As for as the city, Alexandra notes its organization mentioning, “The city is operating really well and I'm very satisfied with my neighborhood and the public transportation. Overall, Rome is very well organized”, while Maria agrees and remarked on the hustle and bustle of the city, noting however that it is not overwhelmingly busy. Besides the glorious city, they are residing on John Cabot’s beautiful campus. When asked about campus residence and student life Alexandra replied, “The JCU campus is great. Well organized, clean and all the measures and protocols of hygiene are successfully implemented. It is also easy finding our classes. My studies are going really well. I love my class and my professor is very intelligent, kind and helpful. Rome is amazing as always. One of the most beautiful cities in the world. The people are very open, friendly, sometimes flirty and of course crazy!”. Maria relates her experience thus far to her time at ACT noting that, “The people from the university have been very open and helpful so far. Actually, our two universities follow almost the same growth mindset which allows us to feel like home. The same stands for the classes too. Until now everything is going smoothly and I am confident that this semester is going to be a very enjoyable experience to remember!”.
Along with the study abroad experience, comes multifaceted personal advancement that includes dimensions of development for one's skills, knowledge, character, and even cultural intelligence. Alexandra is excited about the depth of such possibilities, “I have already found, but also expect more, opportunities to grow as a global citizen. Studying but also living in an environment with people from all over the world and having to switch from Greek to Italian and from Italian to English, when it's necessary, really gives you the sense of being a citizen of the world. I can't wait for some scheduled cultural activities that will bring us together”. Maria sees the potential for personal growth, “Rome and our university offer a real multicultural experience which offers chances to become a global citizen. In such a short time we have managed to meet people from many different countries and to exchange ideas and opinions that make us richer!” The pair still have some time until the program’s end to live their best Roman dreams! Both radiate positivity toward their experience and have utilized their liberal arts education to analyze the world they live in as being eclectic and connected rather than stagnant clusters. Extending beyond the realm of comfortability allowed them to achieve personal growth and evolve their viewpoint. Will you take the same step?
