A Musical Extravaganza at Ananda Mandir’s Bijoya Sammeloni Reported by Subrata Bhaumik In October, Ananda Mandir (AM) celebrated, with much fanfare, the Bengali Hindu festive season of “Devipakhha.” It began with live “Mahalaya,” followed by Durga puja, the most important event in Hindu Bengali religious and social calendar, and ended with the “Bijoya Sammeloni”, which AM presented to the local Bengali community as a token of appreciation for its support for this “one and only” one-stop center for all religious and cul-

tural needs in the tristate area. While Mahalaya and the puja have been separately reported in this edition of the news magazine, this report focuses on the Bijoya Sammeloni that was held on Saturday, October 31, at Krishna temple in Morganville, NJ. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the sprawling venue with its religiously curated compound and facilities provided the perfect set up for this kind of Indian cultural events. Early evening, Dipak Sarkar, AM’s president, inaugurated it with a welcome address to the robust audience. This was followed by a Children’s’ Halloween parade celebrating the day dedicated to “All Hallows” and pacifying the dead evils, which, as the tradition goes, invisibly roam around the environs. The event began with a welcome by “Ananda Dhwani,” AM’s choir, presenting a small offering of Rabindra Sangeet featuring “Ananda Dhara Bohichhe Bhubone” and “Ei Lobhinu Shongo Tobo.” Through the excellent

presentation, Arun Bhowmick, director of the choir, and its members including Rik Sen, Susmita Biswas, Lopa Das, Soma Rakhit, Soma Dutta, Ambalika Mukherjee, Ranjana Sanyal, and Sarbani Mukherjee, gave a glimpse into the musical bonanza that was awaiting the audience. The first major segment was a medley of Bengali songs of yesteryears presented by the Resonance Band, a NJ musical group.

Performers included several local talents including Suranjan Bhanja Chowdhury, Sreya Bhanja Chowdhury, and Sucharita Das in vocal; Satyajit Bhattacharya (vocal and keyboard) and Ranjan Chowdhury in guitar/vocal; and Arindam Chatterjee and Jayanta Das in percussion. This was a tribute to the popular musicians who enchanted the ears and hearts of millions of Bengalis in the 50s through the 90s, and included household names like Manna Dey, Hemanta Mukherjee, Manobendra Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra, Sandhya Mukherjee, Pratima Bannerjee, Nirmolendu Chowdhury, S. D. Burman, and, more recently, Runa Laila, Subhamita Bannjerjee and Raghab Chatterjee. The music exhibited the rich tapestry of various genres of Bengali music including light classical, popular (Adhunik), and the folk tunes. It included famous numbers like Coffee Houser Shei Addata Ar Nei, Mone Noi Bone Mor Pakhira, Ekta Gaan Likho Amar Janyo, Thikana Amar

Checho Bondhu, and many others gems. The pieces on light classical and folk songs also followed a similar pattern, and included Bhubono Mono Mohini (Rabindra Sangeet), Mohan Bashi Baje, Sadher Lau, Shohag Chand Badhoni, Tak Dum Tak Dum Baje, etc. The next segment was the main attraction of the evening featuring a duet between the much famed Sarod Maestro Rajiv Chakraborty and Monomoy Bhattacharya, one of popular Bengali singers of recent times. In support was a team of high caliber percussionist and pianist that typically plays with this Duo including Soumen Chowdhury. It was an excellent segment with two parts that straddled a dinner break. The first item focused on vocal rendition by Monomoy of several famous Bengali light classical songs that were respectively followed by Rajiv Chakraborty’s playing a bit of the base raga or the related dhun, complemented at times by the whole related musical arrangements. Songs presented in this format included some famous Najrulgeeti, Rabindra Sangeets, and Adhuniks like Arunkanti Ke Go Jogi Bhikhari, Eki Labonye Purno Pran, Esho Shyamalo Shundaro, Jhanana Jhanana Baje, and others followed by the various ragas including Ahir Bhairav, Carnatak raga, Desh, Chaya Nat, etc. The second part was a medley of old songs and was presented in a similar format with alternating leads by vocal and Sarod. In the style of any other popular concert, the musicians encouraged the audience to sing along, which they were more than happy to comply with. These songs ranged from famous numbers from old films to Rabindra Sangeet to popular numbers (non-movie) from the period that spanned from the 50s to 70s and the present – originally sung by legendary singers of the time including Manobendra Mukhopadhaya, Manna Dey, Jatileshwar Mukhopadhaya, Dhanonjoy Bhattacharya, and more recently Monomoy Bhattacharya. Notable pieces included Bhenge Mor Gharer Chabi, Amra Shobai Raja, Jodi Tor Daak Shune Keu, Pagla Haowar Badol Dine, Ghorete Bhromor Elo Gun Guniye - all Rabindra Sangeets; film numbers included Khotiki Na Hoi Aji Porbe Meteria Medicar Kabyo (Maya Mrigo), Jibone Ki Pabona (Tin Bhuboner Pare), Hajar Takar Jhar Batita (Stree), Ekhon Bujhili To (Jatiswar), etc.; and old popular (Adhunik) gems including Lolita Go Oke Aj Chole Jete, Bodhua Amar Chokhe Jaal Enenchhe, Jhanana Jhanana Baje, and others. It was a spectacular event effusively dotted with the audience bursting in cheering glee, never-ending applauses, and singing and dancing to the tunes of the performers. The musicians were very appreciative of the audience as well, and the program ended on a very high note. Under the leadership of Arun Bhowmick and Ashok Rakhit, this event was yet another shiny feather in AM’s cap that showcased its organizational strength and cultural prowess.
