TECHNO RELICS

ARCH 702 Senior Research Studio II, M.Arch, UofC, 2021 Prof. Sumer Singh

This research explores the gender inequality in the existing Anthropocene epoch and envisions an alternate interstellar planet based in future, where man is not at the peak of all societal systems and the former exclusions of earth, women, are the one in forefront. The research attempts to pose a challenge to perceive a world where we lived in a parallel post patriarchal reality and one of its crucial elements is a mask that acts as a tool for gender neutralization.

MATERIAL EXPLORATION

Industrial design and related materials like metals are often considered masculine. This new planet challenges the anthropocenic masculinity of metal by combining it with the feminine delicacy of the form. ARTEFACT (PHYSICAL EXPLORATION)

The artefact here, is an envision of the gender neutralizing mask of the new planet, that is the first step towards breaking the gender bias and promoting equity. Anagha Patil Portfolio| 8

SOLARPUNK URBANISM INGLEWOOD ARCH 700 Senior Research Studio I, M.Arch, UofC, 2020 Prof. Alberto de Salvatierra

Calgary has experienced some significant flooding in the last few years and strategies to keep the situation in control and prevent future damages needs to be applied along the course. The area of intervention along the river act as a prototype to control flooding. Properties of a selected crop was studied and applied for the design of the city catering to the themes a solarpunk city.

Similar to barley, in a city water can be implemented as a catalyst to drive social cultural and economic development. Some iterations of patterns were explored based on the logic that the grid adapts and concentrates itself in proximity to the waterbed while unraveling itself to the rest of the city’s infrastructure giving a density variations across the site. For urban fabric, based on the solar analysis the solar envelopes were created which would hold the build structures and allow maximum sunlight penetration. The carvings of the envelopes was based on 80% sunlight hours on farmlands and open spaces and 75% on adjacent structures. These envelopes are shorter near the river which would also allow better views and the height increases as you go towards the urban edge.

PORTRAIT OF CALGARY DOWNTOWN EVDA 682.04 Comprehensive Studio, M.Arch, UofC, 2020 Prof. John Iwanski TEAM MEMBER Rejwana Rahman Stepping into Calgary you realize, it’s portrait is curated by the bow river: vein of the city, holding it together, and this image is best rendered through center of downtown where there’s an opportunity to capture the essence of great architecture, journey of people through transit, hustle through the City Hall, joyful noise of the plaza and boldness of performing arts, framing Calgary from its kernel. This portrait gallery frames the essence of Calgary through its form and experience while housing the portraits and exhibits.

Intervening through mixed use spaces within various zones. The volumetric grid allows division and placement of space both horizontally and vertically. The levels within the blocks allows the built form to act as bridges to cross across railway lines. The interstitial spaces within the grid acts as great agents for creating interactive environment. This system with levels could be installed anywhere on any terrain and allows free movement in the interstices. EXISTING BUILT FORM AT THE SITE

TIMBER TECTONICS Digital Futures Workshop ZHA Code + SAPL, 2021 INSTRUCTORS Vishu Bhooshan Henry Louth Alicia Nahmad Vazquez TEAM MEMBERS 3DS BRIDGE DESIGN FABRICATION Gaurav Janendra Matt Walker Zebing XU Jo-Lynn Yen Chen Yuerao Youness Yousefi This workshop explored geometries, building upon principles of 3D graphic statics, ensuring static equilibrium. The method represents a structural network via its dual - a volumetric mesh composed of polyhedron with shared faces. Construction of a full-scale prototype - a self-supporting structural network with high nodal variance composed of modest sheet materials, demonstrated it’s advantage to fabrication.

INFLUENCE OF OLD TO NEW EVDA 680 Robotics in Masonry, M.Arch, UofC, 2021 Instructor Guy Gardner TA Matt Walker TEAM MEMBERS Jessica Adamson Shelby Christensen Mehak Sidhu Yagmur Yurtbulmus This research explored how manipulating the standard bricks within their bounding box gives us an opportunity to create variants that would allow us to have aggregation with different wall porosity for the purpose of light, ventilation and visual quality. We designed and developed a set of customized bricks which were aggregated to form an installation, constructed as a system of human-robot collaboration.

The project explores robotic 3D printing using biodegradable PLA pellets. It consists of three 8ft 3D printed columns which connects at the top to form a canopy for zoo visitors to walk through. The canopy is lit with colour changing LEDs using proximity sensors, which allow the lighting to shift in response to the movement of visitors around the installation. It symbolizes how human interaction can change our environment and signifies how our presence makes an impact.

FARMHOUSE

MAVAL, INDIA Kalavishwa Architectural firm, Pune, 2019 TEAM MEMBERS Sneha Yerunkar Raj Charaniya Faizan Shaukat The farmhouse is located in the midst of the hills with serene views. The site measures a drop of 8 meters along the northeast to southeast corner. This brings in the opportunity to have an overview of the entire site from the top point on the site. The layout of the structure are kept in geometrical shape where the flow of the movement pattern defines the function of the spaces considering the privacy requirements. The form of roof is correlated with the contours of the site.

FURNITURE DESIGN Center Table MUMBAI, INDIA Internship at Folds Design Studio, Navi Mumbai, 2017 TEAM MEMBERS Anishka Maiti Aseem Deuskar An abstract table piece designed and fabricated in-house for a residence in Mumbai. It was fabricated by combining layers of MDF cut and prepared by waterjet cutting machine. To add to it’s aesthetic quality a pattern of artwork was hand-drawn with black ink.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Nesting of panels on 18mm thick MDF sheet of size 1200mmx2400mm. These panels are then cut with Water jet machine and numbered in sequence. The cut pieces are stacked and glued together then smoothened by grinding. Later sprayed with Duco paint for surface finish and as a base for artwork. Anagha Patil Portfolio|58
