4th Annual Arkansas Delta Flatlander on September 30 Mid-South cyclists of both road and fat-tire bikes who are eager to ride along the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River will have their chance at the 4th Annual Arkansas Delta Flatlander bike ride on Saturday, September 30, in West Memphis, Ark. A second ride, the Gravel Grinder, coincides with the Flatlander ride. Both rides begin at 9 am and are presented by West Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau. P.R. Event Management is producing the cycling events. Sponsors are Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant in West Memphis and The Peddler Bike Shops in Memphis. The Flatlander includes 20-mile, 40-mile, and 67-mile courses routed on paved county roads. The route follows the path of the Mississippi River going south, circles Horseshoe Lake, and returns north to the starting point at Poncho’s. “This is a very flat course which offers an excellent opportunity for beginner riders as well as advanced cyclists who wish to work on their speed,” says Pam Routh, race director. The Gravel Grinder is a 21-mile rough terrain ride meant for off-road bikes. The course heads north through the proposed Delta Regional River Park and Dacus Lake areas and along portions of the St. Francis Levee. “West Memphis is poised to become an outdoor recreation destination, and we’re proud that the Flatlander and Gravel Grinder rides offer a preview of what’s to come,” said West Memphis tourism director Jim Jackson.

Both rides start at the trailhead of the Big River Trail near Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant, 3600 E. Broadway Street. All participants will receive a customdesigned long-sleeve T-shirt and will be rewarded with food, beverages, and music at a post-race party at Poncho’s following both rides. Cost for the either ride is $50 in advance and $60 day of ride. To register, go to www.pr-eventmanagement.net.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Fall Conference Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), the national organization serving more than half a million people a year with trusted information and a community of support, will hold its annual conference on October 6-8, 2017 at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn. By bringing together more than 500 people affected by breast cancer from across the country, as well as caregivers and medical professionals, Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s “Sharing Wisdom, Sharing Strength” conference will offer the latest information on treatments and managing the disease’s effects while building a community of support. The full conference weekend is being offered at a $25 fee thanks to a partnership with the Patient Advocate Foundation. It will feature a broad range of sessions highlighting the latest breast cancer research and treatment options, as well as key topics including breast reconstruction, faith and spirituality, nutrition, and caregiving. Additional activities will include Reach and Raise on Sunday, an inspiring outdoor, all-levels yoga class that builds community in support of people impacted by breast cancer, and Shimmer & Shine, a Friday night kickoff event where conference partners will offer fashion and beauty advice specific to people affected by breast cancer. As in past years, conference attendees will find workshops focusing on their unique experiences, whether by breast cancer stage or type, including Triple Negative Breast Cancer that is estimated to impact 20 to 40 percent of African American women who develop breast cancer. “Coming together with other people experiencing breast cancer gives you a sense of safety and community unlike any other,” said April Hines, 36, a Hear My Voice advocate with Living Beyond Breast Cancer living in the suburbs of Chattanooga, Tenn. “I am thrilled that the Annual Conference is coming to Memphis so this region can learn first hand about the incredible resources and support that this organization has to offer.”

6

“The conference is the focal point of our outreach to the Memphis community in 2017, but it’s not the only initiative,” Jean Sachs, CEO of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, said. “We are working with cancer centers, support organizations, houses of worship, and others to make the community aware that LBBC is a 24/7 resource that is there for them. Our vision is a world where no one affected by breast cancer feels uninformed or alone—and we are putting that vision into action by partnering with leaders in Memphis to do just that.” Registration and more information is available at lbbc.org/2017conference and by following the Twitter handle @LivingBeyondBC.

From Couch to 50-Miler: Victory Bicycle Studio Offers Beginner Cycling Program Clark Butcher began his career in endurance sports at age seven when his father introduced him to running. At nine-years-old he finished his first half marathon and was hooked on competing. He went on to run several half marathons each year, along with numerous 5K and 10K races—until he discovered triathlons. Following a handful of them, Clark realized cycling was his forte, and he never looked back. Working in bike shops around Memphis from age 14, Clark opened Victory Bicycle Studio on Broad Avenue in 2010. Since then, Clark and his staff have offered customers expert advice and training programs for seasoned cyclists. The focus for many years was on racers and those already serious about the sport. However, Clark and his team began receiving requests from beginner cyclists who wanted to join in on training. They created a training program tailored for beginner cyclists in 2017, Couch to 50-Miler. The new program kicked off in 2017 with a group of 118 participants, about 80% of them female. This group was especially unique. It was made up of all shapes and sizes, races and religions, from all different professional backgrounds—artists to judges to teachers and attorneys. The registration fee for the Couch to 50-Miler program includes: a Victory jersey and a monthly training program, one spin class per month at Victory, one weekly group ride manned by three staff members, and one monthly training clinic. Training clinics range in topic from bike storage and care to nutrition. The weekly group ride takes place on Sunday mornings and begins with practicing skills such as how to start and stop and use hand signals. “We take for granted that everyone knows the basics of being on the road,” said Clark. “It’s fun to teach beginners the foundations of cycling and watch them progress throughout the training program.” The program began in June and culminates with the Big Dam Bridge 50-mile ride in Little Rock on September 23. Clark and his team are already getting a lot of questions about when the next program will start. Victory will announce details for the next session after the Big Dam Bridge 50-mile ride on September 23. Check their social media for details. About Victory: Established in 2010, Victory Bicycle Studio has grown from a part-time project for its owner, Clark Butcher, to a national industry leader in bicycle retail. The uncompromising commitment to service and attention to detail that have become the Victory standard is achieved through assembling a team of individuals that uniquely combine experience and passion for all things cycling.

LIVING HEALTHY By Trevor Ling PT, DPT, ATC/L, MBA, COMT, Astym-cert

Ending Hamstring Pain For Good There are an increased number of hamstring strains in runners this time of year. Minor strains are resolved with rest and gentle movement over a couple weeks, while more serious ones can take months to heal. There’s a high recurrence rate of these injuries because of incomplete rehabilitation and returning to training too quickly. Some runners continue to experience hamstring pain years after an injury due to residual scar tissue at the injury site and persistent muscle weakness. There are treatments that reduce residual scar tissue, improve strength, and get you back to full activity pain-free. These handson treatments, combined with the appropriate exercise routine, can help resolve the most chronic hamstring strains. Astym is a physical therapy treatment that regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.) and reduces unwanted scar tissue. It is highly effective for restoring movement and reducing pain, and Astym works where other approaches routinely fail. Astym was designed to target the underlying cause of the problem, rather than just relieving symptoms. Astym treatment is non-invasive, meaning no injections or incisions. The physical therapist uses instruments and their hands to locate and engage unhealthy scar tissue. Astym helps regenerate these damaged soft tissues and

10

stimulate the muscle and/or tendon to remodel itself, allowing the muscle to become stronger. Since the process actually makes the body’s tissue stronger, the patient’s body to can become adapted to greater stress without injury.

“I had a chronic hamstring pull for over 25 years. As a runner, it was extremely difficult to train with any regularity. I visited a sports medicine physician and he recommended Astym therapy. I had eight treatments and my chronic hamstring problem disappeared. This was three years ago and I’ve had no recurrence of any hamstring problem.” —Astym patient

Astym therapy has repeatedly been proven safe and effective in numerous clinical trials. Astym treatment is effective in resolving many problems, including chronic tendinopathies, tendon pain, tendon injury, stiffness, restricted movement, limited function, and other conditions associated with adhesions or scar tissue. It is also effective on sprains, strains, and other acute and sub-acute soft tissue injuries. Runners suffering from a chronic hamstring injury need not put up with the pain. There are effective treatments available to help you return to the activities you love. Astym-certification is advanced training and not everyone is qualified to perform it. Doctors often prescribe Astym therapy for their patients because it is a safe, high-quality care that has proven to be effective. Dr. Trevor Ling is the lead physical therapist and owner of Peak Potential Physiotherapy & Wellness. He brings to the community over 10 years of orthopedic and sports physical therapy experience. Advanced clinical training in manual therapy (receiving his COMT), dry needling, and Astym® certification set him apart from other clinicians in the area. LIVING HEALTHY By Drew Graham MS, ATC, CSCS, PES, CES

Back to Basics for Better Athletic Performance Athletes young and old, from high schoolers to those with decades of experience, are constantly looking for ways to optimize performance and improve their natural abilities. They may be unaware that there are ways to make training more efficient simply by changing the basic mechanics of the way their body moves. Due in part to genetics, improper training, or simple compensations after minor injuries over time, many competitive athletes and weekend warriors develop movement deficiencies that make them prone to further injury or limit their performance ceiling. A training regimen that has long been used by professional basketball players is now accessible to athletes of all ages through the Campbell Clinic Sports Performance Program. Almost all individuals, whether competitive or not, have natural deficiencies and compensatory movements based on their daily activity. The body is an amazing, well-built machine, and it will compensate when needed if someone experiences pain or injury or overworks him or herself without cross-training. For instance, a long-distance runner who employs a repetitive, linear motion may use a training program that only activates and engages certain parts of their legs and core. Even though this athlete may be incredibly fit, they can experience tightness on their anterior and posterior side because they simply haven’t been working on lateral (side-to-side) movement when running in one direction for miles at a time. When the body experiences repetitive training that overuses some muscle and ligament groups and ignores or underutilizes others, it will overcompensate to protect the weaker areas, which leads to the potential for greater injury. Chronic overuse injuries can sideline an athlete for months or end an active lifestyle altogether. The concept of cross-training has gained popularity because it capitalizes on the idea that someone should perform more than static, repetitive movements during a workout.

12

Campbell Clinic’s Sports Performance Program was recently created with this same goal in mind: to identify unnatural movement deficiencies or compensations and help create diverse warm-up or training workouts with functional movement in mind. The three main areas of focus in any successful functional movement program are stability, mobility, and flexibility. I often equate it to the building blocks of a home. Bricks (large muscle groups) are commonly an athlete’s only area of focus, but their mortar (the key stabilizers) are not ever stressed or activated. At best, this

limits an athlete’s ability to perform at a high level, and at worst it creates vulnerability to injury. When someone lacks stability above and below his or her joints, the joint becomes compromised. For example, if your hips aren’t stable, your knees could deviate medially or laterally, which puts them at a vulnerable position for injury. Instability causes undue stress. Over time this leads to breakdown and possible injury. A functional movement program puts someone in a sport-specific movement and then loads them so they can go through a proper range of motion and have the correct mobility before they add weight. This complements a traditional strength and conditioning program where lifting heavier weight or moving faster may be the only focus. My goal for athletes is to help them move more efficiently; then they’ll naturally be able to lift harder and run longer.

Our program incorporates a 20-minute visual assessment with a series of common movement patterns looking at joint range of motion, flexibility, and stability. The ultimate goal of the assessment is to identify compensatory movement patterns and overall muscle imbalances. We then develop a daily home corrective exercise program that addresses those movement deficiencies. The home program is completed only a few days a week and takes no more than 20 minutes. After eight weeks, we typically see substantial improvement in basic functional movement that reduces the risk of injury and helps athletes perform at a higher level. The home program is stored on an easily accessible smart phone app and features helpful videos to guide the workout. To schedule a functional movement assessment and receive a home program, or to find out more about the Campbell Clinic Sports Performance Program, call 901.759.3180 or email dgraham@ campbellclinic.com. Drew Graham leads the sports performance program at Campbell Clinic.

THE REAL FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: ANTI-AGING DENTISTRY By Kathryn Sneed, DMD, MBA, FAGPO, FMII

Aging isn’t easy, and there are plenty of ways to try to combat it. You can get a new wardrobe, a flashier car, or a personal trainer. You can get a face lift, fillers, an updated hairstyle, or age-defying creams. These efforts might work and can go a long way toward boosting your confidence and make you feel better about getting older. However, they don’t necessarily have longevity. There is one thing you can do to make you look younger immediately: a smile makeover. Anti-aging dentistry is a fast, long-lasting way to look younger, healthier, and happier. It presents the best version of yourself. Cosmetic dentistry can be the answer to many common aging complaints. Here are just some: PROBLEM #1: SAGGING CHEEKS SOLUTION: DENTAL IMPLANTS Missing teeth lead to sagging or hollow cheeks. A missing molar might not seem noticeable, but over time your skin will shift as a result of the hole in your smile. Get rid of developing jowls by replacing missing teeth with dental implants that will fill in the gaps of your smile, rebuild the foundation of your teeth, and help stave off sagging skin. PROBLEM #2: DARK GAPS IN THE CORNERS OF YOUR SMILE SOLUTION: PORCELAIN VENEERS Black holes can appear at the corners of your mouth with age. The mouth and face inevitably change as years pass, but this narrowing doesn’t have to be permanent. Porcelain veneers are a fountain of youth. Veneers can be used to manipulate the size of your teeth by making them look white, straight, and attractive, which eliminates corner darkness. Bonus: Veneers can even enhance lips without the need for fillers or tingly lip plumpers. PROBLEM #3: WORN DOWN TEETH SOLUTION: INVISALIGN OR TMJ TREATMENT The longer you live, the more wear and tear teeth undergo. That can impact the jaw’s functionality, causing discomfort. Pain leads to grimaces rather than grins and makes you look older than you actually are. Depending on your situation, your cosmetic dentist might recommend orthodontia. Invisalign is ideal for adults who want to resurrect their smile on the sly. Alternatively, grinding or clenching leads to unattractive worn-down teeth, and TMJ treatment can fix the root of this problem. PROBLEM #4: STAINED TEETH SOLUTION: TOOTH WHITENING Years of drinking coffee or wine, smoking, or simply aging can discolor teeth, making you look older and unhealthy. Some stains are easily removed, and a professional tooth-whitening treatment can revitalize your smile and your overall appearance. This is one of the simplest cosmetic dentistry treatments available and, if right for you, can happen in just one hour.

PROBLEM #5: CHIPPED OR BROKEN TEETH SOLUTION: SMILE MAKEOVER Aging teeth can crack, chip, or break. Bad habits like chewing on pencils or ice and opening things with your teeth can cause breakage as well. Broken teeth can be fixed with any number of cosmetic dentistry treatments, from porcelain crowns to dental implants or porcelain veneers. The goal of anti-aging dentistry is to adjust the size and shape of teeth into a flattering customized look that will smooth wrinkles around your mouth, support your jaw, and balance your smile. Plastic surgery can only take you so far and can easily look unnatural. A beautiful, healthy smile will strip years off your actual age and revitalize your appearance. Cosmetic dentistry is a minimally invasive way to wind back the clock. Even the smallest adjustment to your smile can transform your look and your confidence.

COACH’S CORNER

MAKING THE MOST OF MARATHON TRAINING By Rachel Randall Major marathons can cost a pretty penny, but the price is still one of the easiest parts of getting to the starting line. The planning that goes into it, the miles and miles of training, eating well, and waking up early can all take a toll. A carefully executed marathon training cycle will pay off on race day, and it’s worth the effort. There is nothing worse than running 26.2 miles underprepared and under-trained. Assuming you can run about 6-8 miles for a long run, you can be marathonready in 16 weeks. The first step is making a plan. If you have the money, hire a coach—preferably someone who has experience with the marathon itself and has successfully gotten others across a finish line. Otherwise, scour the internet. There are multitudes of books and training plans available for every level of runner, whether it’s your first marathon or you’re improving on your last one. Marathon training can take several forms depending on your goal of completing one or bettering your time. All runners should have weekly to bi-weekly long runs. More competitive runners, or those with marathon experience, will also add tempo runs and speed work. The other days will be rest days, easy runs, or cross-training. Recovery is just as important as running. The last 2-3 weeks of marathon training are for the taper. Your mileage should decline incrementally, but make sure to keep some quality runs in your training in order to stay sharp for race day.

Visit Fleet Feet Sports for all your hot weather running needs. We have a large assortment of hydration systems, electrolyte supplements, and technical clothing to make summer running bearable.

Long runs are the most important part of marathon training. It’s okay to miss one or two, and modify accordingly, but it’s essential to get in distance and time to be able to finish 26.2 miles. Modifying accordingly means that if you miss your 16 miler, don’t go out and run 16 miles one day and 18 the next. Overdoing it leads to injuries and can put you out of the race. Treat long runs like any other. Don’t let them intimidate you. Build up slowly, and find a friend or a group to cover the miles with you. Plan routes that are interesting or utilize water fountains and tap routes. Nutrition is a crucial element to successful marathon training. During the run, you only have to replace some of what’s lost. Long runs are the perfect time to practice nutrition and figure out what works and what doesn’t for your body. Experiment with calories before the run like a banana, bagel, or energy bar. Focus on recovery after the run. A 3:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio is optimal. Remember, you aren’t burning as many calories as you think. Covering lots of miles isn’t an excuse to eat a bunch of junk food. Your body needs good fuel to do the work, so focus on quality foods as much as possible. Now that you’ve signed up for the big race and paid the big money, make the most of your marathon training by doing the work and fueling your body with the good stuff. With that and a little bit of luck and good weather, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth on race day.

Yoga Awareness Month Featuring Memphis Yogis

By Susanna Lancaster

The popularity, love, and respect for yoga is continually growing Memphis. No matter your community, there are plenty of options to engage in yoga at most gyms alongside a number of amazing studios dedicated to it. If you’ve never tried yoga or want to become more consistent in your practice, September—Yoga Awareness Month—is the perfect time to unroll the yoga mat. Memphis’s yogis introduce you to different styles of yoga and some of the lesser-known benefits.

Amy Lenkszus at Sumits Yoga “Yoga is for every body,” says Amy. Having practiced yoga for 10 years and taught it since 2013, she enjoys the rewarding experience of watching people change in body, mind, and spirit as they take part in her classes. “A big misconception is that you need to be flexible, but it’s the opposite. You become flexible by doing yoga.” She has seen people become less anxious, develop a better body image, and even gain the confidence needed to get a new job or get off medications they didn’t really need after starting yoga. Because certain wind-relieving poses aid in digestion, many also see an improvement in skin complexion and have more balanced blood sugar. “People just feel better,” she says. Amy studied yoga in Arizona under the well-known instructor Sumit Banerjee before opening a Memphis location of Sumits Yoga. When Shelby Farms was renovated last year, Amy saw a perfect opportunity to bring stand up paddleboard (SUP) yoga to Memphis. SUP yoga presents an additional challenge because it all takes place on a floating paddleboard, and there is always the possibility of losing one’s balance and falling in the water. Sumits offers SUP classes for all ages and yoga levels and helps people connect with nature in a way simply not possible in a traditional setting. In addition to SUP yoga, Sumits presents a wide variety of classes, from beginners to more advanced hot yoga. The Sumits community is “focused on a better tomorrow. And I think that’s why yoga grows,” Amy says. Facebook: Sumits Yoga Memphis Instagram: @SUP901

“A big misconception is that you need to be flexible, but it’s the opposite. You become flexible by doing yoga.”

Janet Katz at Second Story Yoga Having practiced and taught yoga for over a decade, Janet teaches gentle yoga, yoga on a rope wall, and all levels of advanced vinyasa. She’s seen a difference in strength, stamina, anxiety, and relief for tight hips, hamstrings, neck, and shoulders—both for herself and her students. She even admits: “Studying and practicing yoga has transformed my parenting. I think my three daughters would agree I am less reactive and more open-minded.” Simply inhaling and exhaling is something she advises people to do to destress or get energized. Second Story Yoga offers classes of all sizes and levels. “It’s exciting to introduce students to a system of simple movements that can reduce aches, pains, discomforts, and, in some cases, even chronic conditions,” Janet says. Olivia Lomax at Delta Groove Yoga When competitive sports threw Olivia’s body out of alignment, she tried yoga instead of visiting a chiropractor and loved it. Now 20 years later, she has been teaching for 17 years and holds over 10 different yoga certifications. As the owner of both the Delta Groove Yoga studio and the school that certifies yoga instructors, she is constantly amazed to watch people heal both physically and mentally. Community is the most rewarding part of teaching to Olivia, and she believes yoga “changes how people approach life.” Olivia became interested in Kundalini yoga when she was pregnant with her first child 16 years ago. After studying and getting certified in it, she brought this form of yoga to Memphis and is still one of the few teachers here who specializes in it. She describes Kundalini yoga as an “evolutionary energy” because it focuses more on the subconscious and helps the body’s nervous system. Kundalini helps in prenatal yoga as well as all kinds of recovery purposes. Delta Groove Yoga teaches all levels of yoga for all ages. To help people find the class that best fits their lifestyle and needs, the studio offers 40 days of classes for $40. “People tell me all the time they can’t do yoga because they can’t even touch their toes,” Olivia says. “But yoga isn’t about that.” Website: deltagrooveyoga.com Facebook: Delta Groove Yoga Instagram: @deltagrooveyoga

Charlie Graham’s Free Downtown Yoga in the Park One of Charlie Graham’s goals as a yoga teacher is to eliminate the intimidation people feel with yoga. Having started practicing yoga around 18 years ago, she recognizes that to an outsider, yoga may seem like something only for fit people in fashionable workout clothes, but she has erased this stereotype for many. Charlie says that yoga holds a mirror to herself and reveals her faults and strengths. “Yoga doesn’t care,” she insists. “It’s not a rubber mat. It’s a mirror.” Tuesday evenings at 6 pm, she holds a free yoga class for anyone who wants to come, including those who have never tried yoga. Charlie shows everyone the positions, rather than just naming them. The session largely focuses on deep breathing because people can practice the mindfulness of yoga anywhere by taking deep breaths. Every week, she notices more people coming, and many have told her how they’re more confident, less anxious, and sleep better. Instagram: charliebaxtergraham

Karen Moss at Better Bodies Yoga After Karen’s father died of lymphoma, “yoga fell into [her] lap.” As a personal trainer, she discovered and began practicing it to help one of her elderly students. Yoga ended up benefiting her just as much, helping her make it through the Chicago marathon she ran in memory of her father. Karen saw not only the physical benefits of yoga but the mental, emotional, and spiritual ones as well. Yoga helped with her loss. When the opportunity arose to open a yoga studio on the same street where her father worked, it seemed like a sign. “It was meant to be,” she says. Karen’s goal is help people be the best version of themselves—better, happier, kinder, more caring, and more whole. Yoga has eased her own autoimmune disease. In her years of teaching, she has seen yoga help so many different people heal, whether from physical injury, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, or even paralysis. “It’s something that truly transforms the soul,” Karen insists. Better Bodies Yoga offers classes for all ages, and it focuses on each individual’s needs. Website: betterbodiesyoga.com • Facebook: Better Bodies Yoga • Instagram: @betterbodiesyoga

Better Bodies Yoga Offers Himalayan Salt Caves 22

The studio will open its new Himalayan salt caves on September 11. One room will be for relaxation, another will be a yoga salt room, and the third will have a salt bed that massages the body. These rooms will offer endless benefits to those who enter, aiding in sinus issues, asthma, skin conditions, bronchitis, ear infections, and respiratory infections. The salt can even help people who are giving up smoking and those fighting depression.

CYCLING FOR ST. JUDE By Carlos Sepulveda This October, when 19-year-old Adam straps on his helmet to participate in the 2017 St. Jude Ride, he’ll have a little more motivation than most. For Adam, the race presents an opportunity to give back to the hospital that saved his life. Adam had always been an active and busy teen in Memphis. From summer projects to sports, he was constantly on the go. When Adam started feeling tired, it was easy to chalk it up to a busy schedule. However, weeks later blood tests revealed Adam had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His family turned to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for his treatment and care. At St. Jude, Adam’s treatment plan included two-and-a-half-years of chemotherapy. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened over 50 years ago. St. Jude is working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90%, and it won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.

24

Even as Adam underwent treatment, he was determined to raise funds and awareness for St. Jude. “It’s important for me to give back because my family has been given so much at no charge,” he said. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food because it believes all a family should worry about is helping its child live. In January of this year, Adam and his family celebrated the end of his treatment with a No More Chemo party. Still Adam continues to fundraise and raise awareness through events like the St. Jude Ride. “It sounded like a fun and exciting event to get involved in,” he said. “Little did I know, it would be one of my favorite fundraising opportunities because of the competitiveness and bonding between the teams. It can be a very physically challenging event, but when you think about what my friends are going through at St. Jude, it’s nothing.” Now that Adam is finished with treatment, he will begin his sophomore year this fall at Rhodes College, where he is attending on a full scholarship.

Losing Weight, Gaining Purpose By Sam Sullivan. Photo by Tindall Stephens. On the website of Dr. Andrea’s Medical & Weight Loss Clinic, you’ll find the motto: “I did not wake up like this.” And it’s true, 44-year-old Andrea Walker did not one day look in the mirror and see herself 35 pounds lighter, a fitness competitor, a Doctor of Nursing Practice, or a small-business-owning super mom. She worked for it. A diagnosis while in nursing school set Andrea on a path to health. Despite having a smaller frame and being in her 20s, she was diagnosed with high blood pressure. The thought of being on prescribed medications at such a young age kicked her occasional gym and healthy-eating habits into full-blown lifestyle changes. In 2013 her “on-again, off-again” gym routine became a twice-weekly commitment with a healthy diet plan. Dr. Andrea says, “At first, I would get on the treadmill and run for like 30 seconds and I was so tired.” Slowly, with the help of trainers, she built up her endurance and passion for her new lifestyle. Now, she runs for cardio, runs a business, and runs her clients’ self-doubt right out of the room. After earning her Doctorate of Nursing Practice, losing 20% of her body fat, and being taken off high blood pressure medicine, she knew her work still wasn’t finished. She thought, “Wow, I feel amazing, I look amazing, and I want to help other people feel this way!” She found a way to combine her experience in the healthcare industry with her passion for motivating others to live their healthiest life. If she could do it, others could too. Dr. Andrea’s Medical & Weight Loss clinic opened in January of this year and offers nutritional counseling, meal plans, weight loss plans, medications, as well as a various other health-boosting services. It’s possible, however, that her most valuable service is her relentless positivity and the first-hand experience she offers clients. In over 15 years of making her health a priority, Andrea has maintained a strong and healthy figure, helped many clients reach their goals, and entered the world of fitness competitions, where she placed 3rd. While it would be easy for Dr. Andrea to name herself when asked about her favorite success story, she thinks back to a client of hers: “On the first day, when they come into the clinic, I have them fill out a form of how much they want to lose. This woman wrote down 50 pounds. After three months the woman had lost 47 pounds, and she came to me and said ‘I just threw that number out there! I had no idea I would lose that much weight. Now I want to lose more!’” Showing people what they are capable of and encouraging them through the hard times is what keeps Andrea working so hard. With more fitness competitions coming up, Dr. Andrea’s schedule is packed to say the least: fasted cardio 5-7 days a week, strength training, evening cardio, meal prep and—you know—running a business...“It’s crazy,” she laughs.

26

Dr. Andrea’s Quick Tips GO-TO WORKOUT WHEN ON THE GO? Bands! I travel with them and have four or five sets. When I work in the Emergency Room, I’ll use them while on my break. SIMPLEST CHANGE TO MAKE? Don’t skip breakfast! It gets your metabolism going. POST-COMPETITION TREAT-YO’-SELF MEAL? My friends laugh at me because I will still eat something healthy—a turkey burger.

George Woodbury Jr. M.D. Rheumatology and Dermatology Associates PC celebrated its 24th birthday June 13th 2017 at our office at 8143 Walnut Grove Road, in Cordova TN. I’d like to comment upon who we are, and what we’re about. We are a two-physician practice dedicated to helping people to feel better about themselves and to function better at home and at work. The dermatology end of the company is chaired by yours truly – George Woodbury Jr. M.D. I decided to enter dermatology when in my third year of medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, in 1986. I liked the fact that the specialty involved people of all ages, and that is used a combination of medical approaches and surgical approaches. Many of the therapies used by the specialty were also pretty effective in helping people to get better. I also had some perspective on the specialty, having grown up in a dermatology and ophthalmology household, my mother Linda Woodbury MD having been a dermatologist since 1965 – and my dad George Woodbury Sr. – having enjoyed the practice of ophthalmology – medical and surgical treatment of the eye just about a long. My family gave me an idea what life in the world of medicine was all about. My life changed pretty dramatically after I met my wife Cathy Chapman MD at the University of Chicago Medical School. We fast became friends, then fell in love and married the day after she graduated medical school in 1988. We came to Memphis after Dr. Chapman completed her specialty training in rheumatology – which is the study of arthritis and connective tissue diseases like lupus and scleroderma – at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester New York – in 1993. We’ve been practicing together in Cordova TN since 1993.

MedComplete. It handles all the usual medical office functions from medical records to prescriptions to billing. MedComplete requires constant upgrades. Staying up-to-date allows us to deliver better care. On July 10th of 2017, we shall have reached 19 years of being entirely paper-free at our office! We are also both dedicated to staying up to date in our respective fields. We participate in a spectrum of medical organizations, Dr. Chapman being a member of the American College of Rheumatology and myself a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, as well as the Tennessee Medical Association and the Memphis Medical Society. My dermatology practice includes both medical and surgical treatments for common skin conditions – acne, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, and both precancerous and cancerous skin lesions, including melanoma, basal cell skin cancer, and squamous cell skin cancer. I perform Mohs surgery – Mohs Micrographic Surgery – for skin cancer – to allow me to check the margins while the patient is having the surgery. I also offer both sterile and clean surgeries in the office. And I offer allergy patch testing to try to identify what chemicals a person may be allergic to. I use systemic therapies for severe skin conditions – including Accutane (isotretinoin) for severe or resistant acne, and biological injections for psoriasis. These therapies help to improve patient’s self-image, a key factor in their success in life. So it’s all about helping people to heal both medically and emotionally. Rheumatology is the study of conditions of the connective tissues of the body – focusing particularly upon the joints – but also covering the tendons and ligaments. And Rheumatologists – like Dr. Cathy Chapman in our practice here in Cordova – are all about keeping people able to function in their lives to the fullest of their capacity.

Dr. Chapman and I practice different medical specialties, but our practice philosophy is similar: strong patient engagement. We believe that a patient who has a deeper understanding of the disease is better able improve quicker. Better patient understanding supports a solid treatment plan.

Dr. Chapman uses systemic therapies to help her patients with rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue diseases like lupus and psoriatic arthritis. She offers joint ultrasound, as well as in-office X-rays and labwork. Since there are over 300 separate diseases in rheumatology, these tests greatly help Dr. Chapman to diagnose joint conditions and disorders and also to measure a patient’s progress.

We spent five years – between 1996 and 2001 – designing our own computer system at Rheumatology and Dermatology Associates – to enable us to become paper-free – thereby saving time that we could spend with patients. Our system is called

So welcome to Rheumatology and Dermatology PC, as we enter our 25th year in Memphis. We look forward to working with you.

Smooth Sailing into Aging By Molly Okeon. Photo by Jamie Elkington. AGE: 76 FORMER OCCUPATION: Cofounder of Formulary Productions, Former President of Wimmer Brothers Printing & Publishing HOBBIES/INTERESTS: Golf, painting, sailing, and playing poker FRED WIMMER may have inherited his athletic tendencies from his parents, but it is his very own passion for fitness that has kept him highly active into his senior years. Fred’s father pitched softball against The King & His Court, a barnstorming softball team that put on shows much like the Harlem Globetrotters. Fred, too, played baseball and basketball during his school days and continued with basketball in college at Rochester Institute of Technology. As part of Memphis Printing Industries basketball team, Fred says, “My claim to fame was playing at the Mid-South Coliseum at halftime against the All-American Red Heads,” one of the first professional women’s basketball teams. Fred’s motivation for staying active hasn’t waned. “It’s so obvious that any exercise pays great dividends,” says Fred, who has been living at Trezevant Manor for two and a half years. “Anyone who does not exercise is missing out on the benefits. It is so fine to be able to move.” Fred plays tennis regularly and is amused by the variation of his skill level from day to day. “One day, you play incredibly well, and the next day, you play terribly,” he says, laughing. “You do embarrassingly stupid things, and everyone laughs together. There are daily variations in your abilities.” He plays with six other folks his age and noted no one is the “best player” in the group. “Different day, different person,” he says. “It’s weird, I think, but it’s part of what we love about the game.” Fred says he especially likes tennis for several reasons: the competitive nature of the game, the cardio workout from constantly moving around the court, and the limited time frame. “Golf can go on forever,” he says, noting that he grew up playing more golf than tennis. “With tennis, you can play inside in the air conditioning, which is a heck of a deal.” Fred has had three bladder tumors, a brain tumor, and a parathyroidectomy as well as lost a kidney to cancer but notes, “Those were just things I took care of and healed up.” Fortunately, Fred has not had any serious sports-related injuries to keep him from staying active. “I cannot believe I’m so lucky,” he says. Not only does the resilient senior stay active by playing tennis, he has enjoyed canoeing most of his life. Eleven years ago, he came in third in his age bracket at the Outdoors, Inc. canoe race on the Mississippi River. He said his wife, who also resides at Trezevant, inspired them to buy their first canoe for “family fun.” Recently, Fred went sailing with former Trezevant executive director John Webb and his wife, Ginny. “I taught him everything he knows about sailing,” he jokes. In June, the three Trezevant residents participated in the 39th Annual Bikini Cup Race and Party at Heber Springs, Ark. “Ginny was the helmsman for the race. And, let me tell you, I didn’t have any trouble with her being in charge!” Fred plans to continue focusing on fitness and is grateful that living at Trezevant supports his active lifestyle.

Nearly a Century of Exercising & Eating Right By Molly Okeon. Photo by Jamie Elkington. AGE: 92 FORMER OCCUPATION: Teacher and Real Estate Agency Owner HOBBIES/INTERESTS: Reading, doing word puzzles, playing cards, evangelizing With nearly a century of life under her belt, GERALDINE PAGE keeps up an enviable workout schedule, staying active for a whopping three hours a day at minimum. “I do a lot of moving, and that’s what makes 92 feel more like 64,” says the spunky nonagenarian, who has resided at Trezevant Manor for more than a decade. “I don’t feel 92. I feel a whole lot younger. Probably because I spend most of my morning exercising.” Page starts her day at 2:30 am, when she “wakes up automatically.” After a half hour in the pool, Page returns to her living space and reads her Bible. Around 5:30 am, it’s back to the pool for another half hour. Then, she has an apple or a banana for breakfast. After that, Page heads to the exercise room for time on the treadmill and the workout machines. Then she spends a half hour with her fellow Trezevant residents in a class called Land Exercise. “That’s one I’ve been very consistent about attending,” she adds, noting that her favorite part of fitness classes at Trezevant is the fellowship. “We all do the steps and laugh together. The instructor leads us in a lot of leg

exercises, which really get us all going for the day.” After class, it’s back to the pool for another half hour of exercises she learned from her physical therapist. Geraldine says the fuel that keeps her fire burning all day is the healthy diet she learned from the 1985 book “Fit for Life” by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. “It talks about proper food combinations,” she explains. “The book details how live food feeds your body and provides you energy through raw foods like fruits and vegetables. I think the reason I’m in such good condition is that I’ve eaten that way. That book changed my life.” She notes that, “raw food gives you the energy that cooked food misses. You get the nutrition your body needs because the food is alive and not overcooked.” Geraldine is a proud evangelist that believes her main purpose in life is to share her love of the Lord with others. “I know that the Lord is blessing me with good health and the ability to share Him with those who may not know Him,” she says, adding that her late husband Bill had the same experience. “He was such a wonderful man and husband.” Geraldine adds that she “chats with the Lord” all day. “I tell him that, once I get up into heaven, I am going to give my husband a big hug and thank him for all the blessings he gave me while he was on this Earth, and I will finally see Jesus in person, Amen,” she exclaims with a smile.

“I don’t feel 92. I feel a whole lot younger. Probably because I spend most of my morning exercising.”

Aging with Grace By Christin Yates. Photo by Tindall Stephens. TERRI WALKER, 60, has been active her entire life. However, as she ages, health and wellness have become even more of a priority for this wife, mom, and professional auctioneer. Terri and her husband, Lance, have three children ages 31, 22, and 20. For 30 years, Terri and her husband have worked as auctioneers and own their company, Walker Auctions. Terri works around the clock and is often moving furniture, standing for hours, and traveling. During her year as the 2009 International Female Champion Auctioneer, she realized just how important it is to stay on top of her health and feel good. “I had to do so much traveling and speaking that I realized if I don’t take care of myself, I can’t do this,” says Terri. Her day typically begins at 6 am and can last until the late evening hours with a gala or function to attend. “Many of my clients are dealing with a move or other difficult circumstances,” she says. “I want to make the process as easy as possible for them. If my health was poor, I wouldn’t be able to help people make these life transitions.” In order to maintain her stamina as well as her physical appearance, Terri’s wellness routine has a holistic approach that works with her busy schedule.

“I want my visual aging to happen so slowly that people can’t notice I’ve had anything done,” Terri starts each morning with an hour of exercise. She rotates between cycling, lifting weights, and swimming, all of which she does in her own home. Her lifelong workout routine has helped keep health issues at bay and her at a healthy weight. “Exercise year after year has helped me to stay active so that I can fudge on my diet occasionally and keep my weight in check,” Terri says. She also rarely drinks alcohol, takes regular supplements, and proactively keeps routine checkups with her doctors. To keep her appearance fresh and healthy, Terri is also a loyal client of Valerie Monismith at Ashtoria Aesthetics & Wellness. Always honest with her clients about different skin procedures and regimens, Valerie helps Terri look and feel her best with Botox, medical facial treatments, Bellafill, laser treatments for rejuvenation, and more. “I want my visual aging to happen so slowly that people can’t notice I’ve had anything done,” says Terri. Thanks to Terri’s exercise and skin care routine, she continues to be active, vibrant, and full of energy, which she hopes to continue over the years. With her well-rounded approach to health and wellness, she is able to defy the effects of aging and maintain her youthful energy and appearance, which she says is vital to continuing her career as an auctioneer. “There’s no way I could do my job without having the energy and stamina that I’m thankful to have,” she says. “This is an around-the-clock job that requires me to give everything I have, and luckily, I’m able to put in the work and manpower needed to be successful in my career.”

6 Strategies for Successful Aging By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN

The cumulative impact of the choices we make over the years can dramatically influence the health and quality of our life. The longer a person lives, the more ingrained (good and bad) habits become. There’s no better time than the present to start practicing these six strategies for successful aging.

1.

Adjust protein portions.

Many Americans consume most of their day’s protein at their evening meal. Research suggests that spreading protein intake evenly throughout the day may be more beneficial for overall health and wellness. Aim for 20-30 grams of protein at each meal to optimize muscle synthesis, immune function, and satiety.

2. Feast on fruits & veggies. Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential to well-being. They also contain fiber, which promotes digestive health, improved glycemic control, and reduced cholesterol.

3. Bone up on calcium & vitamin D. Vitamin D and calcium are widely known for their crucial role in maintaining bone health. Recent studies also suggest these two nutrients may aid in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, while boosting immune function. In addition to dairy, calcium can be found in leafy greens, nuts, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and fish like salmon and sardines. To ensure adequate vitamin D levels, spend time in the sunshine and/or consider taking a vitamin D3 supplement.

4. Move it or lose it! Contrary to popular belief, the Gold Standard for exercise isn’t necessarily pumping iron or running for hours on end. It’s movement a person is willing to do consistently over time. Brainstorm enjoyable ways to get active like yoga, kickboxing, biking, or dance. And remember: It’s not about getting ripped. It’s about preserving and improving functionality, longevity, and health.

5. Anticipate body changes. It has become a common misconception that bodies should remain the same size, weight, and shape throughout adult life. However, body changes occur naturally as people age and reach new stages of life (Hello, menopause!). Rather than resenting these changes, begin shifting expectations beforehand and practice gratitude for the way bodies prepare themselves for the challenges of aging. Though gradual weight gain feels uncomfortable for some and is frowned upon by many health professionals, consider a bit of additional weight as an insurance policy during times of stress, illness, or falls. More research is needed, but what is often considered a health burden may actually safeguard against age-related mortality.

6. Prioritize self care. Self care is key to a balanced life and effective stress management. Deliberately and consistently incorporating movement, nourishing meals, regular check-ups, adequate sleep, relaxation, prayer, time with loved ones, and other pleasurable actions promote physical, mental, and emotional health.

The impact of food, movement, and self care on physical, social, cultural, and psychological quality of life cannot be overlooked. No matter your current age, it’s not too early or too late to begin incorporating these health-promoting habits!
