Get Your Booty to the Barre There’s a new fitness craze that has come to Memphis called the bootybarre®. The name may imply that the class is lighthearted and narrowly focused specifically on the booty, but this fun and dynamic class format will tighten and tone the entire body while elevating your heart rate for noticeable, quick results.

Developed by Master Pilates instructor Tracey Mallett, the bootybarre® is a ballet-bar-based program that applies the fundamentals of Pilates and yoga with dance, helping to strengthen and sculpt the body. Mallet, a former dancer, created the program after learning that many Pilates students were looking for a workout that would give them cardiovascular exercise in addition to the benefits of Pilates. After trying out a few classes with people all over the country, she came up with the bootybarre® in 2009.

The bootybarre® classes apply toning, cardiovascular- and flexibility-enhancing components to the fundamentals of traditional barre-type classes. Unlike other barre programs, the bootybarre® incorporates more functional movement, closely

mimicking real life movements.

With this larger range of motion comes increased cardio, which allows for more fat burn and faster results together with a decreased risk of injuries.

Choreographed to music, the bootybarre® not only has great technical benefits but it also offers a unique fun factor that keeps people engaged and motivated throughout the class.

Memphis Area Craft Breweries, Restaurants Unite to Fight Sickle Cell

A sampling of Memphis-area brewers, purveyors, and restaurateurs are contributing to the Taste the Flavors Brew Festival, a charity event benefiting the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee. The event will be held Saturday, November 8, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Just for Lunch in Chickasaw Oaks Mall.

The Foundation funds patient care, social services, medical research, and promotes understanding of sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder.

Local craft breweries, High Cotton Brewing Co., Ghost River Brewing, and Memphis Made Brewing as well as local distributor AS Barboro are providing refreshments, and Aldo’s Pizza, DeJaVu Restaurant, Just For Lunch, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and Texas de Brazil are providing food. Tickets for the

Pure Barre Raises Money For St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital The Pure Barre studio in Memphis, one of over 250 Pure Barre locations across the country, is the grand prize winner of the company’s first ever National Pure Give Challenge, a competition among the studios to raise money for their favorite causes. As part of the grand prize, the Pure Barre studio in Memphis won a guest teaching experience from Pure Barre Founder and Chief Concept Officer, Carrie Dorr, and $7,500 in prize money from Pure Barre Corporate for their charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, bringing the total donation amount to $28,629.

COMMON RUNNING INJURIES AND THEIR TREATMENT In the Physical Therapy Department at Semmes-Murphey Clinic, we often treat patients who come to us with running-related pain issues. Our process is to assess the problem, create a treatment plan to resolve the issues, and provide suggestions to avoid any future injury.

ASSESSING THE INJURY. Typical running injuries include knee pain, lower-back pain, hip pain, plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Iliotibial band syndrome, patellar tendonitis, chondromalacia, and Achilles tendonitis. Through the use of biomechanical evaluation (including observation of running form), we are able to identify the mechanical fault that leads to the injuries listed above.

Identifying these faults allows us to construct an individualized treatment program that addresses the cause of the injury. This is a necessary step in the recovery process as well as preventing further injuries.

Should the assessment indicate, we have an easy access Neck & Back Care Clinic available in the same building with neuro physicians available.

DESIGNING A TREATMENT PLAN. Treatment plans typically include a combination of manual therapy to address soft tissue dysfunction and restore normal joint mobility, and therapeutic exercise to improve flexibility in the joints that need to be mobile and strength and stability in the joints that need to be stable during running. We also discuss self-care techniques and a home therapeutic exercise programs utilizing foam rollers and self-acupressure and soft tissue techniques. And, finally, we perform a shoe evaluation and orthotics review to ensure proper footwear and foot support.

TREATING TMJ If there is a disorder that has been under recognized and misunderstood, it is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), or what’s called TMJ by the layperson. TMJ stands for TemporoMandibular Joints — the two joints located directly in front of our ears that allow our lower jaw to open and close. The disorder, however, goes far beyond those two joints.

This disorder is the result of inflammation that affects and alerts the nervous system to respond in a particular manner. It is not simply the problem of teeth coming together that it was once thought to be. A person may not be aware they have symptoms until an event (like a big yawn, extended dental appointment, intubation for anesthesia for surgery, or some minor trauma) pushes the joints to the extreme and the person’s joints are not able to compensate.

When the disorder is present symptoms may increase and decrease. Rarely does it simply disappear on its own. Instead, it usually returns with an increase in severity of symptoms. This disorder very often coexists with sleep-disordered breathing, such as snoring and apnea.

Both males and females suffer from the disorder, but there seems to a predominance of females. Many people assume these symptoms have other origins and take medications for these individual symptoms (symptom treatment) when, in fact, they may be a collection of symptoms of TMJ Disorder or Sleep-Disordered Breathing. Very often the patient has come in for an evaluation when the disorder has been present for many, many years. These symptoms have taken their toll on the body since the medications only reduce the symptoms, but the disorder may have caused permanent changes.

A good example of permanent change is the arthritic changes in the spine from forward head posture due to TM Joint pain and poor ability for a person to breath through their nose. The person then begins to develop lower back pain from this prolonged postural change. As I treat a patient, they begin to have a reversal of postural change that then needs to be addressed.

It depends on how long the person has been able to compensate for the postural change as to how much physical change has permanently occurred.

Children also suffer from these disorders and should be screened and treated as early as possible.

The good news is that when evaluated and diagnosed properly there is an answer and help available. There is no dedicated specialty in dentistry for this treatment, so a person should seek out a dentist who is well trained and well versed in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.

AN (IRON)MAN AND HIS CAUSE Being active benefits the athlete, but being active for a cause extends beyond the athlete and helps the masses. Reed Walters, 45, president and CEO of Sector Capital Management, is an athlete who stays active for a cause. He pushes himself physically and mentally to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

“It [Parkinson’s disease] has had a pretty significant impact in my life. I lost my grandfather to it when I was 13. I missed out on a lot of time with him,” Walters said. “My father has it now, and it is creating difficulties for him.”

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain. Risk factors vary from genetics, heredity, and exposure to certain pesticides.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation, a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease, states the disease impacts one in 100 individuals over the age of 60, or roughly one million Americans.

“Following through on my commitment to help my father, there wasn’t more that I could do other then be supportive in addition to taking care of him,” Walters said. “I wanted to make a strong statement of my commitment, which meant raising money for a cure.”

While hopelessness may set in for loved ones of individuals with Parkinson’s disease, Walters found a way to channel that feeling of hopelessness by raising money to help find a cure. His means of raising money was tackling back-to-back Ironman’s.

“This endeavor gave me something more active and tangible to help,” Walters said.

Walters regularly trains with a local triathlon team, Memphis Thunder Racing, which got him in shape both physically and mentally.

“We had nearly 40 members of Memphis Thunder Racing compete in Ironman

Chattanooga. This gave me a big boost of encouragement during the race,” Walters said.

With the support of his family and friends, Walters completed the race in Chattanooga and one in Louisville.

During the Louisville race the temperature reached 98 degrees and the terrain began to take a toll on his legs.

“I have come to realize these races are much like life. It is not about running the perfect race, but rather doing your best and showing character along the way regardless of what happens,” Walters said. “When confronted with a problem or tough situation, it is how you handle it and act that matters most.”

While Walters does not have the disease, he still approaches it as a tough situation, in which faith keeps him strong and fighting for his loved ones and others impacted by the disease.

“They cramped up so bad,” Walters said. “They were like pretzels, and I still had 26 miles to run in extreme heat. It didn’t look good, but I remained calm, trusted in the Lord, and began the process of taking in salts, hydrating, and massaging out the cramps.”

Eventually Walters’ legs got to the point where he could start running and finish the race strong.

“Each race had different extreme challenges that briefly shook my confidence and threatened my ability to finish,” Walters said.

Similarly, in Chattanooga Walters pulled off another victory after becoming ill during the course.

“I lost so much fluid and couldn’t keep anything down,” he said. “I stayed calm. After a couple of hours, and changing my nutrition, I ran the second part of the marathon strong, finishing within six minutes of my best Ironman time.”

In all his efforts, Walters set a goal to raise $3,000 for Team Fox, a donation team for The Michael J. Fox foundation. He surpassed that goal with a total of $3,400.

By using his athletic ability for a greater cause, Walters went from completing one Ironman in 2008, to completing two Ironman competitions, one in August and one in September. To break it down, that’s a total of 4.8 miles swimming, 52.4 miles running, and 224 miles biking in less than 48 hours.

RIDE, DISMOUNT, RUN, JUMP, REMOUNT, RIDE, REPEAT

Professional riders from around the country and local amateurs will compete in the 28th Annual OICX Outdoors, Inc. Cyclocross Championships on Sunday, November 9th.

Hundreds of spectators with cowbells (no, not Mississippi State fans) will be cheering at Greenbelt Park on Mud Island. The Mississippi River provides a picture-perfect backdrop for the autumn event, which is the longestrunning Cyclocross Bicycle Race in the country.

The OICX Race draws both elite and amateur athletes who race on the same course. A Cyclocross course consists of many short-course laps (1.5-2 miles), featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, sharp turns, and obstacles that require the rider to quickly dismount and carry the bike while navigating the obstruction before remounting for a specified amount of time (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour). The race takes place in the fall and winter months.

For more than 20 years, Joe Royer, race director and coowner of Outdoors, Inc., has traveled and ridden in a multitude of bike races throughout Europe and North America. He is dedicated to bringing the best experiences back home to make the Bluff City’s Cyclocross Championship a world-class event.

The children’s race, which Royer is quite proud of, has grown exponentially. “Young riders are getting involved in the sport at an earlier age,” Royer said. “They have the opportunity to ride on the same course as the pros. Not many sports can boast that.”

Fitness Fuel: Eat Like an Athlete

Trainers and athletes agree that you only get out what you put in. This notion applies not only to effort and training, but to fuel for the body as well. Selecting the right nutrition to fuel your workout may be as important as choosing diesel or unleaded for your car. It can shut you down, or it can enhance your performance. Pinpoint ideal foods and electrolyte replacements to best balance any level of fitness, from novice to professional.

Suggestions for the budding or expert athlete were offered by Memphis H+F readers from across the country and right here at home in Memphis.

Eat like a triathlete.

Often it is not so much about what you eat as when you eat. Cyclists and runners who go longer than 90 minutes should not only have a pre-workout snack, but prepare to slam an electrolyte replacement gel or a sports drink to help maintain healthy blood sugar at intervals during long distances. Many replenish sugars and proteins with childhood favorites such as fig cookies or chocolate milk.

Critical to any athlete is the long-term diet. Pretend your body is a steam train, chugging along the track. In order to make it up that mountain ahead, you need hot, slow-burning coal. A few cords of wood may burn hot for a moment, but will cool that fire almost as quickly as it was lit.

Your training food should also not be a flash-in-the-pan. Quicker-burning calories from carbohydrates can assist athletes in short bursts of activity, such as weight lifting, Crossfit, or the first leg of a big race. However, endurance activities like longdistance biking, running, or swimming also benefit from slower-burning, efficient fuel. Refuel with the proper fuel every time.

Those worried about overindulging post-workout can plan the post-workout refuel as a part of their regular meal.

AMBER LEA, 29 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF DANCE/ FITNESS, AND WHY? It changes back and forth between belly dance and Tahitian dance. They are both a great workout and fun to do.

WHAT DO YOU TEACH, AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING? I teach both belly dance and Tahitian, and some hula. These dance styles have always made me a happy and healthier person, and I like giving that to others and seeing the smiles they make while they dance.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO TEACH? Right now it’s Tahitian.

HOW DO YOU STAY FIT? By dancing for several hours a day and visiting the gym as often as I can. I also enjoy doing yoga, Pilates, and Brazilian Butt Lift.

WHAT IS A FITNESS TIP YOU WOULD GIVE? Sometimes we get tired or lazy and think we can’t get to that workout or that dance practice, but if we just push ourselves and do it anyway, we get through it, enjoy it, and feel five times better afterwards. You will feel grateful that you did.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE STYLE OF PERFORMANCE/MOVEMENT THAT YOU DO? I just remember seeing belly dancers perform and wanted to try it. I started taking classes and absolutely loved it. I learned Tahitian through The Dancing Fire, the company I perform with. I also took several classes from professional Tahitian dancer Leolani Gallardo in LA. WHAT CLASSES DO YOU OFFER? Both beginner and intermediate Tribal Fusion Belly Dance, and also intro to Tahitian and Polynesian Fitness.

This may be my very favorite thing about teaching and why I started teaching. I enjoy watching students grow and learn to perform so that they can share their newfound passions with others.

A few months later we were asked to do a Burnish III show at Levitt Shell, and that was my first performance.

GSL Cross Country (XC) and Memphis Tiger Swimming.

I had a swim meet this past weekend, the Tiger Fall Classic. My goal was to drop time in my events and I made that goal. I also competed in my XC league championship a few weeks ago. My goal was to get a time under 14:30, and I made my goal with a 14:12.

I did well and finished in 16th place.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO TRAINING FOR TRIATHLONS AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE? I trained with my regular swimming and running workouts. My brother signed up for a triathlon and it sounded like fun, so I decided to try it.

ARE YOU COMPETITIVE IN NATURE?

Yes, it was all just for fun until about a year and a half ago, and then I became a lot more competitive.

HOW DO YOU STAY IN SHAPE DURING AND OFF-SEASON?

I practice 5-6 days a week for two hours everyday after school and on Saturday mornings. Competitive swimming is year round, but I do 5Ks with my mom throughout the year. I also bike for fun, especially in the summer to stay in shape for running and biking.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT/ ATHLETIC EVENT TO WATCH?

RIDING FOR A REASON

Memphian Gears Up for American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure

When was the last time you hopped on a bike? For Alan Prouser, 60, it was probably just a few minutes ago. Like many here in Memphis, Prouser has the bicycle-riding bug. He loves it, and chooses to ride three to four times a week, or close to 70 miles.

In 2002 Prouser was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. It is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. Type 2 diabetes causes your body to misuse insulin and is the most common form of diabetes. At first your pancreas makes extra insulin to compensate, but over time it isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.

For Prouser it was discovered not by his usual general physician but by his dentist. After several appointments for ongoing dental issues, he was encouraged to see his doctor and have his A1C tested. After receiving the diagnosis, his first concern was losing a limb.

“Both my grandmother and great grandmother were Type-2 diabetics who lost a limb due to diabetic neuropathy,” Prouser

stated. About half of all people with diabetes have some form of nerve damage known as diabetic neuropathy. If untreated, neuropathy can cause severe damage, and even lead to loss of a limb.

For years Prouser accepted the diagnosis. He took his medicines, checked his blood sugar, and tried to watch what he was eating, even losing close to 60 pounds. However, in 2012 he stepped onto a scale and did not like the number he was approaching. The weight had crept back on without him noticing. He knew it was time to make a change, and in the spring of 2012 he began to bike again.

Prouser’s first event was the 2012 Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association. Alan rode in the 35-mile ride but wanted to aim higher. Now, three years later, he has lost over 50 pounds, his energy level has increased, and he was able to discontinue use of many of his oral medicines.

His excitement and enthusiasm has spread to his entire family, including his wife Joni, also 60, who regularly walks and participates in local 5K runs. But Prouser’s biggest accomplishment was completing the 62-mile “Metric Century” ride for the Tour de Cure this past May. “As long as I have my feet

Prouser is taking on the challenge again this year. “I’m looking forward to leading the Red Riders effort again,” Prouser said. “I am here to say that anyone can take the challenge — you just have to hop on a bike!”

Red Riders are people with diabetes who are raising awareness and money for the disease by participating in the Tour de Cure. Red Riders know what it means to have diabetes

and want others to understand that diabetes is a serious disease that can have deadly consequences.

“If you are a person living with diabetes, I implore you to ride this year and do everything you can to declare your status, so others on the course and in the wider community have the opportunity to celebrate and be inspired by you,” said Mari Ruddy, founder of the Red Rider program. “I ask you to get on your bike and ride strong and sure. Riding in a Tour de Cure is the affirmation of your courage and perseverance.”

INGREDIENTS q 3 T olive oil q 1 large white onion, chopped q 1 organic celery stick, chopped q 2 1/2 cups red lentils, rinsed q 5 cups of veggie stock q 4 medium tomatoes, peeled and chopped q 1 lemon q 4 large organic green collard leaves, cut in thin ribbons q 1 /2 tsp chili powder (optional) q P inch of sea salt

This recipe can create a post-workout reward or a midnight dessert—minus the guilt that comes with satisfying late-night cravings from a tube of cookie dough. Best of all, pumpkin pancakes are incredibly simple to make. That’s enough for a proteinpacked, 150-calorie pancake!

INGREDIENTS q 1 /2 cup 100% canned pumpkin q 1 /4 cup of liquid egg whites q 1 /2 scoop of whey protein powder, flavor of your choice q 1 tsp baking powder q 1 /2 tsp pumpkin spice

INSTRUCTIONS – M ix canned pumpkin, liquid egg whites, and protein powder together with a spatula. Mix by hand for a slightly lumpy batter, or, if you prefer, use a blender to achieve a smoother consistency.

– Stir in the baking powder.

– C ontinue to stir as you add in the pumpkin spice. Add as little or as much as you like, or add a little natural sweetener if you like.

– S lowly add water. Start with 1/4 cup and add from there. Just be sure to keep the batter thick!

– P ause for a second and taste test this awesomeness. Get excited to cook it!

– T urn your stove on medium heat. Pour in the batter (it should be thick), and let cook for about 3 minutes.

– F lip your perfectly pleasant protein pancake and lower the heat a little bit.

Cook until desired fluffiness, then let cool.

– Top with favorite healthy topping of choice.
