Yoga in the Park Downtown Yoga in the Park is a weekly FREE yoga session in Mississippi River Park sponsored by the Downtown Memphis Commission. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SUNSCREEN By Purvisha Patel, MD In my day-to-day skin care consulting, I constantly and consistently mention wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen should always be above an SPF of 30. SPF (sun protection factor) correlates to the amount to time the skin can withstand UV radiation before it turns red. This, however, is not a measurement of DNA damage. It is not a perfect or accurate way of measuring sun damage/carcinogenesis of the sun in an individual’s skin. A product with an SPF greater than 30 is minimally more effective. For any increase in SPF, you may only get a few extra minutes before your skin begins to redden. An SPF of 30 is the lowest effective number to be used. Because it is a measure of redness, an SPF of 30 or above should always be reapplied every two hours.

A lot of patients also ask what type of sunscreen I use personally. Some of my favorite sunscreen products are: • Tizo Tinted Sunscreens (and clear varieties) • Neutrogena Sheer Mineral line • Vanicream Sunscreen • Blue Lizard Sunscreen (local company) • California Baby Sunscreen

Sunscreen FAQs: SHOULD I PROTECT MY HAIR?

WHAT’S THE RIGHT WAY TO APPLY SUNSCREEN?

Absolutely! The sun can damage any area of the skin, including your scalp. Plus, the sun can bleach and dry out your hair. Make sure to use at least an SPF 30 on any exposed part of your scalp. Also consider a moisturizing and protecting product for your tresses. Of course, you can always be ultra-fashionable and use a large hat to protect your hair and face.

Sunscreen should be applied about 30 minutes prior to sun exposure, and 1 ounce should be applied to each extremity. That’s 1 ounce for each arm, 1 ounce for each leg, 1 ounce for the front of your torso, 1 ounce for the back of your torso, and 1 ounce for your face and neck area. Yes, that’s 7-8 ounces total, but you want to block the sun, not simply screen it.

HOW DO I KEEP SUNSCREEN OUT OF MY EYES? The best solution is to use a physical barrier like a hat, visor, or sweatband. You can use a sunscreen stick, but studies have shown that they aren’t as effective as traditional sunscreen products.

Remember sunscreen is not perfect and cannot replace sun avoidance and protective clothing!

HOW LONG DOES SPF LAST? I’ll answer this as a two-part question. First, sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours and more if you’re sweating a lot, swimming or doing any other activity that is rubbing off or wearing away at your sunscreen. As far as the actual breakdown of the product, sunscreen is effective for three years after its purchase date, but this is given it’s stored at room temperature and not exposed to extreme heat, like in a hot car, which breaks down the product more quickly.

SOME LIKE IT HOT By Rachel Randall The dog days of summer are officially here, and getting out the door for a run on hot days takes some serious motivation, along with some advanced preparation. With the right mindset and some pre-planning, you can become acclimated to the heat—and might even find you enjoy running in it! As we have mentioned before, “There aren’t bad conditions, just bad gear.” Having the right clothing can go a long way towards your comfort while running in the heat. Wear loose-fitting shorts and singlets or tank tops made from technical fabrics that wick moisture away from the body. Choose a light-colored hat or visor to keep the hot sun from directly hitting your head. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sunlight, and most run-specific specs these days are polarized, lightweight, and won’t slip. Having the right clothing won’t solve everything, but it will improve your comfort level. Hydration is always important, but during the hottest months, it is even more important to go into each run well-hydrated. Make a habit of sipping water or an electrolyte drink such as Nuun throughout the day, every day. Depending on the length of your run, you may need to carry extra water via a handheld bottle or some form of “fuel-belt” style carrier. Carry extra electrolyte supplements (Endurolytes are a great option). Electrolytes will help your body retain the water you drink to keep your hydration level higher. If carrying a bottle isn’t your thing, plan your route around TapRoutes or carry some spare cash for a convenience store stop if needed.

Allow your body time to adapt to the hotter conditions. Most runners and walkers can adapt to the heat with consistent effort in a 2-3 week period. Heat and humidity can have a huge impact on your effort level, and therefore your pace. Be flexible and slow your pace if needed, maybe even by 1-2 minutes a mile for a few weeks. Afford yourself walk breaks, or better yet, leave your watch at home and run based on effort. Timing is everything. Run in the early morning or late at night to avoid the heat of day. In the Memphis area, you’ll find lower temps with higher humidity in the mornings. Evenings will bring lower humidity but typically higher temps. Find what works for your body and what is the most comfortable for you. While summers in the south don’t present ideal conditions for outdoor running, with the right mindset you can embrace the hot temperatures and get out the door. Daily attention to hydration and nutrition, as well as having the right gear and planning ahead, can make summer runs tolerable. Not only will you see a rise in your performance when the cooler temperatures come, but you might just appreciate those cold winter mornings a little more.

MIX IT UP ON THE MAT Growing up as a classically trained ballerina, dance and fitness have always been important to 27-yearold EMILY DISON. From Jonesboro, Ark., she moved to Memphis to pursue a career in dance. In 2011, she joined the Memphis Grizzlies as an NBA dancer. After several years of traveling with the team, she decided to put down further roots in the Memphis community as a Cardio Barre instructor.

Buti Yoga is a dynamic asana practice fused with primal movement, tribal dance, and deep core engagement. The trademarked style of yoga was created in 2010 by Bizzie Gold, a celebrity trainer and wellness expert, and is taught in 20+ countries and across the US. Buti Yoga’s technique pulls from various other methods like Kundalini and vinyasa flows and combines them with primal dance moves and drumming on your mat.

Yoga had also started to call to her, and she began incorporating some of those methods into her dance over time. “My personal Yoga practice is a movement of therapeutic art. Movement allows me to experience my feelings, calms my anxiety, and reminds me of my truth. Yoga helps me to gain control with balance and by improving my flexibility with tension release,” Emily says. After years of pursuing both separately, she found the perfect way to combine her identity as a dancer and her passion for yoga when she learned about a new method: Buti Yoga.

The beginning of the 60 to 90-minute class focuses on activating energy centers in your body through movement and breath control. As the energy in the room rises, participants move into vinyasa flows that build into West African movement sequences. The end result is a tribal fusion cardio mix that sculpts and tones your whole body.

Beauty in our Flaws Like most kids, KINSEY HARMON just wanted to fit in when she was in high school. Instead, going into her senior year, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that made her different than everyone else. Like 6.8 million Americans, Kinsey has Alopecia Areata, which causes hair loss on the head, legs, and other parts of the body. While a common autoimmune disease, it can be debilitating for a young woman in today’s image-focused world. Kinsey dealt with her diagnosis by hiding it, only telling her closest friends and family. “I was constantly worried that people would see the bald spots on my head and think I had something wrong with me.” While to others she seemed normal, she leaned on those around her during the emotionally trying time. “My friends and family are the best support system in the world,” she says. “They never left my side.” Eventually Kinsey learned to cope with her disease through fitness. “Alopecia affects the way you see yourself and for the longest time I hated looking in the mirror.” Alopecia isn’t something you can control, but she felt empowered controlling what the rest of her looked like. “Going to the gym makes me feel strong, which has made all the difference in my mentality.” With encouragement from her friends at the gym, Kinsey became a National Physique Committee (NPC) competitor last summer. In her first competition, she placed second in her Novice and Junior classes in the Bikini category. She’s training for two more competitions this year.

Kinsey learned to cope with Alopecia through fitness competitions. What she enjoys most is the training leading up to the event. She admits that competition prep is hard but worth it. “You push your body to its limits. Just when you feel like you can’t give anymore, you do and you surprise yourself. You realize how much you are capable of, mentally and physically.” To get ready for competitions, Kinsey does fasting cardio in the morning six times a week and lifts weight in the evenings, with additional cardio afterward. She eats low carb and high protein and fat but sometimes sneaks in a cheat meal once a week. When competing, Kinsey wears her hair naturally but with a halo extension that adds length to the thinner areas. “Competitions remind me that the ‘limitations’ I think I possess are not actually that relevant at all. I am so much more than my hair.” Outside of the gym, Kinsey is a junior at the University of Memphis studying exercise science. After hiding her disease for 3 1/2 years, this February 21-year-old Kinsey made it public on social media. “I want to help others by telling my story.”

Kinsey has been flooded with messages from people who are like her or know someone with Alopecia. “Many people can relate or need to hear that it’s completely okay to be different and to embrace your flaws,” she says. She hopes to be an inspiration and an ear to anyone who needs support. “I want to make sure everyone knows that they are beautiful no matter what flaws they have. These flaws are what makes us beautiful.”

FIGHTING ON THROUGH BREAST CANCER By Jordan Walker As an avid runner, 54-year-old MELEIA KNIGHT knows the importance of being proactive about your health. So, when she felt a small knot in her breast, she assumed it was merely a cyst having just had a clear mammogram a month prior. However, when Knight’s gynecologist referred her to the Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Center for a follow-up ultrasound and mammogram, anxiety began to settle in. Being the fitness enthusiast she is, Knight pushed her recommended biopsy back so she could still compete in the Memphis Runners Off Road Series she had already registered for. And while those races bought her more time to escape reality, on March 14 last year, she received the devastating news no one is ready to hear: she had breast cancer. “I was in complete shock,” Meleia says. “No one in my family had ever had breast cancer, and I was fully convinced it was merely a cyst.” Knight was referred to Richard Fine, MD, FACS, a breast surgeon at West Cancer Center, who diagnosed her with HER2-positive Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma. Her aggressive type of cancer required an aggressive and individualized treatment plan. In collaboration with Dr. Fine, Lee Schwartzberg, MD, FACP, a Medical Oncologist and Hematologist at West Cancer Center, who is also a breast specialist, devised a treatment plan consisting of several rounds of chemotherapy to reduce the tumor to an operable size, followed by radiation. “My first chemotherapy infusion went well, and I ran six miles the following morning,” says Meleia. “However, with each infusion treatment, I felt weaker and weaker. My speed slowly decreased over time, followed by my distance, and eventually I only had the strength to walk. But I walked every day.” In June of 2016, Knight underwent surgery to remove the lesion and two lymph nodes. Under the care of Michael Farmer, MD, a radiation oncologist at West Cancer Center, she began six weeks of radiation therapy. And while her treatment was draining—in every form of the word—she never stopped her active lifestyle. After every appointment, Knight changed into her running attire and headed to the Greenline at Shelby Farms Park.

“I set a goal to increase my speed and distance until I was able to run again,” she says. “And every day, my sister, my running family, and my Bootcamp Fusion family were with me—every step of the way.“

Knight completed her last infusion treatment in March of 2017 and has returned to running three times a week, Fusion Bootcamp twice a week, and regular yoga to get back her old strength. A wife to a husband of 36 years, a mother to two children, and a grandmother to six grandchildren, Meleia is determined to continue showing her family the true meaning of “fight on!”

In December, Knight completed a 10K in honor of her niece, Cassy, who was also undergoing cancer treatment. It was Cassy’s fight that inspired Meleia to continue to fight on for herself. If Cassy could fight on, she could too.

She will be running at West Fight On: Cycle.Run. Walk. on September 16, 2017 at Shelby Farms Park in celebration of her cancer journey and all she’s overcome. West Fight On: Cycle.Run.Walk. raises funds for the University of Tennessee/

And in 2017, we dermatologists do have a number of newer topical and systemic agents to help acne, psoriasis, and eczema, so we have a better chance of helping people to achieve success with treatment. Secondly, having a healthy skin allows people to function better at work or at home because treating skin conditions helps to alleviate symptoms like itching or burning, or dryness and cracking of the skin, or even hair loss. It’s hard to concentrate on the issue at hand if one is up in the night with itching or burning of the skin. Many times in my career I’ve seen the whole family dynamic suffer when a child is up at night itching. And in 2017, we dermatologists have newer ways of testing the skin to try to get at the cause of many skin conditions. Sometimes we take a skin test called a biopsy to send off to the lab, to get at the diagnosis. Sometimes in my own practice I do what is called allergy patch testing, a way of checking for what chemical a person may be reacting to, thereby helping that person’s eczema.

CONNECTING THE CITY THROUGH FITNESS By Susanna Lancaster. Photo by Philip Murphy. As a child, 58-year-old MITCHELL LANSKY rode his bicycle endlessly around his family’s block. Where he was going in the circular cul-desac and how he didn’t get dizzy was a mystery to those around him. He simply enjoyed being on his bike, and his love of cycling has since endured. His love of running didn’t come so easily. Twentyone years ago, Mitchell reluctantly agreed to jog with some of his friends, and everyday they ran a little further. When the group reached 16 miles, his friends broke the news to him—they were training for a marathon, and so was he. Though he sometimes needed persuading, Mitchell began to take running and cycling more diligently. He still runs with that same group that trained together all those years ago. Mitchell’s pursuit of fitness has propelled him through seven marathons and countless other races. However, for him fitness is more than just a singular pursuit, it’s what ties a whole community together. For nearly nine years, Mitchell has volunteered as the ride director for Cycle the

Greenway, a fundraiser for the Wolf River Conservancy. Already they have surpassed their goal of raising $45,000. From his time spent on the Greenway, he’s noticed more and more people—from mothers with strollers to tourists to couples on a romantic walk—taking advantage of the space. “It’s not just for runners anymore,” he says. The Greenway connects all the Memphis areas, and by 2020 it will reach from Cordova to Mud Island. Through different fitness programs and events, Mitchell has made countless friends and seen how exercise brings people together. Every year Mitchell also volunteers as part of the Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club and has trained hundreds of riders for the Bluff City Blues 100 century ride. “It is an honor for me to be able to help, and without a doubt, I am sure I get more out of it than what I put in,” Mitchell says. From April to October, he helps riders build up their endurance to ride 100 miles in the fall race.

Fitness enthusiast, Mitchell Lansky, has volunteered as the Ride Director for Cycle the Greenway for nine years. 26

Outside of devoting the majority of his year to the Memphis community through fitness, Mitchell stays busy with at his own law firm that specializes in estate planning, elder law, and business law. He’s also active with his family that includes his wife, three children, and two beloved dogs. He credits exercise as one of the traditions that him and his wife share. Every morning they set out together for a run/walk at 5:30 am He aims to run three to four times a week accompanied by strength training and some yoga. While his love for fitness may sound intimidating to others not as active, he believes anyone can develop the passion for health simply by having supportive companions and staying as consistent as possible. Reflecting back to the days when he first started running, he says with sincerity, “Even if you don’t feel like it, you usually feel better after you do.”

All their classmates and teachers were there. WHY I RUN: I run first thing in the morning. Running is so hard, and if I can get that out of the way, the rest of my day is a breeze. FITNESS MOTIVATION: Respect for my body and myself. How can I expect to care for others if I can’t care for myself? PRE-RACE RITUALS: I like to get to the starting line about one minute before the race. All the fast runners in Memphis are already there at the line, and if I get there too early and stand with them, then anxiety and self-doubt could set in. It’s a part of human nature. The last race I got to the line early, I stood next to a man and a woman who have both been in this magazine because of how fast they are, and I got nervous and ran my worst race of the year. NEXT WW CHALLENGE: The Forrest Spence 5K. This one is held by the wife of one of the physicians at Campbell Clinic. If I can luckily win that, then I’ve completed my personal “grand slam.” WW GEAR: Gotta wear Nikes. It’s what all the high school kids wear, so I wear them to try to feel young. The model doesn’t matter as long as they look cool. Now I know that’s breaking the first rule of picking out shoes, but I make my own orthotics and have access to carbon fiber inserts at work, so I can make almost any shoe runnable. BUCKET LIST: Take my kids to Vietnam. I’m a second generation Asian American and have never been there. BEST EATS: I like to order an extra large bowl of pho at Pho Saigon. It’s comforting salt-of-the-earth food. And yes, it’s literally loaded with sodium so I have to drink a lot of water. IF YOU COULD COME BACK AS AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE: Does a T-rex count? I can relive my days as a toddler running around the playground “roaring” at all the other kids as my parents shake their heads in embarrassment. ON MY KIDS’ NIGHTSTAND: Whatever book my kids pick out as their bedtime stories. There’s a lot of “Fancy Nancy” and “American Girl” in my life right now. VICE: Chocolate donuts. Gibson’s knows me on a first-name basis.

Melon Salad with Basil-Mint Gremolata By Andrea LeTard

Light eating is extra desirable in hot summer months, and fresh fruit are the perfect go-to for simple yet elegant salads. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and fresh herbs are a perfect combination, making it the ultimate summer salad. The gremolata acts as a light, low-calorie dressing packed with flavor. It’s great for serving poolside or for a picnic at the Levitt Shell.

INGREDIENTS: q 2 cups mixed greens

q 1 /2 cup mint - finely chopped

q 2 cups arugula

q 1 lemon - zested and juiced

q 2 cups cubed watermelon

q F reshly cracked black pepper

q 1 cup cubed cantaloupe

q 2 Tbsps extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

q K osher salt q 1 /2 cup basil - finely chopped

1. Mix the greens and arugula together in a large bowl. Top with the watermelon and cantaloupe and sprinkle lightly with salt. 2. M ake the gremolata. In a small bowl by mixing together the basil, mint, lemon zest, lemon juice, pepper, and extra-virgin olive oil. Top the salad evenly with the gremolata and shaved parmesan. Drizzle more extra-virgin olive oil over the top, if desired.

Watermelon Strawberry Basil Cocktail In the hot summer months, a refreshing cocktail by the pool is the perfect medicine. This recipe uses the combination of fresh watermelon, strawberries, and basil to create the ultimate fruity summer bliss. Take out the vodka and replace the wine with sparkling water for the perfect mocktail.

INGREDIENTS:

q 1 cup water

1. I n a small saucepan over high heat combine the water, sugar, jelly, and basil. Bring to a boil for 1 minute then take off heat and let cool. When cooled, remove the basil.

q 1 /2 cup sugar q 1 /4 cup strawberry jelly or jam q 3 /4 cup basil, plus more for garnish q 1 cup fresh strawberries - chopped q 1 cup fresh watermelon - cubed q 1 /2 cup vodka q 1 bottle Prosecco or sparkling wine

2. A dd the strawberries and watermelon to a blender. Blend on high until completely liquified. Pour the fruit mixture through a strainer, into a pitcher to remove the pulp. Add about 1/2 cup of the simple syrup from Step 1, the vodka, and the bottle of Prosecco or sparkling wine. Stir to combine. 3. T o serve, add ice to 4-6 glasses, pour the mixture, and garnish with a basil leaf.

Squeezing the Truth Out of Juicing By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released a new policy regarding juice consumption, stating juice should not be introduced to infants before one year of age unless clinically indicated and should be limited for toddlers, children, and teens.

Carbohydrates tend to digest quickly in comparison to other macronutrients, but the presence of fiber as in whole fruit helps slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream leading to greater satiety and less of a spike in blood sugar levels.

In the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, the federal government allows juice to count as a serving of fruit but urges Americans to consume primarily whole fruits for the dietary fiber. Meanwhile, Instagram feeds are chock-full of “green juice” posts, and business continues to boom at juice bars, leaving many perplexed about whether or not juice fits into a healthy adult’s diet. It’s time to squeeze the truth out of the long-standing juicing trend.

Juice is often promoted as a health food, a substance to cleanse or detoxify the body, or a means to lose weight. To set the record straight: juice is not needed for health, nor does it cleanse the body. The body has vital organs responsible for detoxification, and no one food causes weight-gain or loss.

Juice is simply the liquid extracted from fruits and vegetables, leaving the fibrous material behind. Fruits and vegetables are primarily sources of carbohydrates, containing natural sugars that provide a trademark sweetness.

Though juice labels often boast containing two apples, two cucumbers, a cup each of spinach and kale, blueberries, and strawberries, most people could not imagine sitting down to eat all that in one sitting! Downing a glass of juice is not the same as eating several servings of fruit, just as sipping chicken broth is not the same as eating a chicken breast.

Still, juice can be a valuable source of vitamins and minerals on days when it’s difficult to consume adequate fruits and veggies. Since most of the fiber is left behind during processing, juice is ideal for those with medical conditions warranting a low-fiber diet. Similarly, individuals who struggle to take in adequate energy or have high calorie needs may incorporate juice for additional nourishment without filling up on fiber. For these individuals, the inclusion of juice boosts variety and consumption of important nutrients their bodies need. Medical conditions and energy needs aside, let’s not forget this most basic truth about juice: Sometimes a cold, sweet glass is refreshing and delicious, and it’s perfectly normal to select foods (and beverages) purely for enjoyment from time to time.

Still deciding whether to juice or not to juice? Keep these strategies in mind: • U se your own juicers (aka: teeth) most of the time. Consuming more whole fruits and vegetables brings greater satiety, more fiber, and a slower pace.

• T o minimize peaks and valleys in blood sugar and appetite, incorporate appropriately sized portions of juice (typically ~½-1 cup) as part of a meal or snack rather than sipping it throughout the day or drinking it alone.

• A dd juice into smoothies with Greek yogurt or whey protein for a satisfying, balanced snack, or consider blending your fruit rather than juicing it for a higher-fiber beverage.
